Permission Granted

Award-winning comedian/actor returns home to perform off-Broadway one-man show in Westerly

By Ken Abrams

E

mmy and Peabody Award-winning comedian/actor and Rhode Island native Paul Mecurio, a writer and recurring performer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is bringing his show Permission to Speak to Westerly’s UNITED Theatre on Saturday, March 9. But don’t expect a traditional stand-up comedy routine; Permission to Speak is a one-of-a-kind show where Mecurio invites audience members to share their stories on stage. During the show, he remains at the center of the dialog , guiding the conversation with humor and compassion. Providence born-and-raised, Mecurio worked at his parent’s furniture store as a teenager and believes growing up in the city gave him a leg up in the entertainment business. “ We had to work in the business, we didn’t have any choice,” he says. “I was selling furniture when I was 10 or 12, so you learn how to talk to people.” Mecurio grew up in an Italian neighborhood on Charles Street, and attended Classical High School, where he met kids from all over the city. “Rhode Island is a microcosm of the world,” Mecurio explains. “You can function anywhere if you grew up here. As a small state, there’s an instant familiarity we have with each other, or we think we have with each other. It’s a no-nonsense place without pretension.” MARCH 2024 | HeyRhody.com

His show, which has run off-Broadway and now tours around the countr y, evolved organically. “I can’t say I sat in a room and planned this,” says Mecurio, who graduated from Providence College before leaving the state for Georgetown Law School. In the late 1990s, after selling a joke to Jay Leno, he took a bold step away from an established career in corporate law to perform stand-up comedy. He’s been at it ever since. Initially, his conversations with the audience were a type of crowd work, a strateg y comedians use to warm up the room. “I’ll see that you have a beard, but I don’t really care about your beard,” says Mecurio. “I just have a two -minute bit that I want to get to about beards. But I found that if you ask more questions beyond the surface, you get these amazing stories.” Topics can range from accounts of first dates to stories about coming out to your parents. “Some people want to tell their stor y, and some people need to tell their stor y.” As Permission to Speak took on more theatrical elements, a production team including award-winning puppeteer and filmmaker Frank Oz joined the show. In addition, 23-time Emmy Award Winner for Production Design, Jim Fenhagen – known for his work on late-night T V, the Olympics, and five Super Bowls – and animator JJ Sedelmaier, the artist behind ground-breaking animation on MT V ’s Beavis & Butt-Head and Saturday Night Live’s “ T V Funhouse” cartoons are part of the project. “ The premise of the show is we’re nameless and faceless and sort of generally disconnected from each other, but if we share stories and get together for a time, we realize we have more in common than we think and maybe we come together and connect a little bit,” says Mecurio. The result is a different show ever y night. The stories are compelling , unpredictable, and intended to highlight commonalities. “I really care about these conversations. When you start to hear these stories, it’s just incredible.” Learn more at UnitedTheatre.org and follow @paulmecurio.

NEH Grants $444K to Tomaquag Museum for New Home on URI Campus in Kingston Thank s to a s u b st a nt i a l g ra nt f ro m t h e N ational Endowment for the Humanities, Rhode Island’s only muse u m to t a l l y d evo te d to te l l i n g t h e story of Indigenous peoples from a first-person perspective will soon h ave a n ew h o m e at t h e U n i ve rs i ty of Rhode Island campus in Kingston In partnership with The Public’s Radio • ThePublicsRadio.org • By Luis Hernandez, Mareva Lindo

I

n a conversation with Morning Edition host Luis Hernandez, the museum’s executive director, Lorén Spears, said the new location will be more expansive and more accessible. This inter view transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

Lorén Spears, Executive Director of the Tomaquag Museum

LUIS HERNANDEZ: What will this new grant make possible ?

HERNANDEZ: Why the new location? What’s behind the move ? SPEARS: So it’s something that our museum board and staff have been working on quietly for a long time, because we’re in a very remote space in Exeter, on the Arcadia side – and although extremely beautiful, not easy for people to find. We’re also having problems with flooding. This last storm was included in that, where bridges were closed that were leading people to us, on these rural back roads. And so that makes it really a challenge. So we are really looking forward to being in a more central space, easy for people, tourists and average Rhode Islanders alike, to find us,

10

Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.

for schools and programs to have an easy place to park; plus we’ll be on RIPTA lines. HERNANDEZ: Isn’t it true that the new location is actually kind of close to a scene of the 1675 Great Swamp Massacre ? SPEARS: It’s not too far away… and it’s going to be the 350th anniversary next year of the Great Swamp Memorial, or the massacre itself, I should say, and the subsequent memorials. Our community – meaning the Narragansett community, which I’m a citizen of – we think that’s really important for those stories to be told and for people to remember, and to understand that that war, which Europeans dubbed King Philip’s War, really is the war for New England. It was to conquer this space and create this new place that we now call New England. And it went up to 1678 in northern New England before the finality of the war, and it was to break the sovereignty, if you will, of indigenous nations here.

HERNANDEZ: I’ve always been fascinated by not only the history between colonists and the indigenous people, but it’s how that history is told. And so obviously you get one perspective, which is what a lot of us have had in school. And then there’s the indigenous people’s perspective. And I’m wondering, how does the museum address that history? How do you tell that story? SPEARS: Our mission is always to tell that stor y from a first-person perspective. It’s to promote the dialog ue around these conversations. It’s to allow people to hear and pro cess and think and have conversations around what these perspectives are. And I often will say that histor y isn’t the linear line that people like to portray it as, it’s really a big circle that you could call a pie. And the center point of that pie is that point in histor y, and ever y single slice that you could make into that pie is all the var ying perspectives of that point in time. And none are right and none are wrong. MARCH 2024 | HeyRhody.com

Photos courtesy of the Tomaquag Museum

LORÉN SPEARS: This new grant is really to help us start getting to the point of construction in our new museum project, along with other funding that we’ve received. It’s actually a challenge grant. It’s over $444,000, which we have to match two-to-one. It’s literally to help us begin the construction of the new museum, which has lots of components to it – an education center with educational classrooms, the Indigenous Empowerment [Center], which includes a cafe so that folks can come to the museum and experience indigenous foods while they’re learning about indigenous culture, and our research, archive collections research center, and of course the museum exhibit gallery at large, as well as outdoor exhibition spaces.

Thanks to a substantial grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Tomaquag Museum will soon have a new home at the University of Rhode Island campus in Kingston They’re just all of our viewpoints based on our experience, philosophy, and our ideolo g y and our politics, and ever ything else we know about ourselves that makes us who we are is fed into that perspective. And I think as learners, it’s really important to hear lots of different perspectives and to understand where people are coming from. HERNANDEZ: So what are the next steps for this new space? When does the location open? SPEARS: We’re hoping , fingers crossed, to break ground sometime this year, but there are still some behind-the-scenes reg ulator y things that we have to get through in order to actually get to a groundbreaking date. The Salty General S and wi c h S ho p What it is: A classic sandwich shop boasting fresh breads and house-made sauces.

W h e re to f i n d i t : Located in the shingled commercial building on Boston Neck Road, near Wampum Road, look for the jaunty blue “open” flag.

W h a t m a k e s i t a R h o d y G e m? There’s nothing better than a good sandwich with layers of fixings piled on good bread and smothered with sauce. Philip Dimin, chef, owner, and creative mind behind The Salty General makes it his mission to offer only the tastiest of sandwiches, “using high-quality ingredients, thoughtful sauces, and some of the best bread in Rhode Island.” Dimin is a true foodie : “I live for food. I think about it most of the day,” he says. But it’s not just his passion that makes a stellar sandwich, Dimin also appreciates flavor profiles from sampling food from across the world, and a few of his sandwiches are inspired by time spent cooking in Italy with his wife’s family in Calabria. Although Dimin’s sandwiches will appeal to both traditional and adventurous eaters – from a classic tuna salad to the mortadella frito (which is packed with salt and vinegar chips!) – he goes the extra mile for his customers by making his own sauces and pickling vegetables himself. Those who are hungr y and visit the Salty G are g uaranteed to be ser ved “a damn good sandwich.”

A Creature Challenge find in Foster

F

rom coastal wetlands and scrub forests to deciduous woodlands interspersed with ruins from longgone mills, hiking in Rhode Island is already the setting of diverse landscapes, but there’s an added element of whimsy hidden among many of our beloved trails, thanks to RI Walks. Like Pokémon GO but without the need for augmented reality, the program’s Creature Challenge initiative has installed steel plant-inspired critters on trees along paths for a gamified hiking experience that just might make even non-hikers discover a dormant love for exploring the great outdoors. It makes sense that the idea for the challenge was born in 2021, when, stir crazy from staying inside, many of us sought COVIDsafe refuge trekking nearby trails. “ The RI Land Trust Council was looking for new ways to encourage people to get outside and explore nature all over Rhode Island and enjoy land trust trails,” says program coordinator Virginia Streeter. “ We wanted to create a fun outdoor activity that could be enjoyed by all ages, especially during a time when many people were still unable to gather indoors.” Collaborating with Greg Rebis, an artist at The Steel Yard, the creature designs are minimalist yet undeniably cute, and embody a range of plant and mushroom species native to Rhode Island, from the violet (our state flower) to tree leaves and a chanterelle. Rebis explains his aim was to “elicit a sense of wonder, surprise, and myster y. The resulting designs are whimsical characters – an anthro pomorphization that dances between fantasy and reality – to appeal to the imagination and let people relate to our native flora while out in nature.” Whether searching for or stumbling upon a creature, the experience sparks curiosity. “The council hopes that spending time on the trails will help people learn more about the natural world around them and appreciate the importance of conser vation in Rhode Island,” says Streeter, who also points to the mental and physical health benefits of being outside. Because creatures are all over the state, challenge participants are likely to wind up on trails they’ve never visited before. March, though a purgator y of a month between lingering frosts and budding crocuses, is an ideal time to get cracking on this family-friendly challenge, the lack of foliage

Before venturing out, visit RI Walks’ website for an interactive map of hikes with creatures. Click on your destination, and you’ll be directed to an ExploreRI link with info on how to get there, where to park, points of interest, mileage, difficulty, trail maps, and more. Make an account to track your progress, using the QR codes located on each creature. RIWalks.org/challenge.php

EYES TO THE GROUND Says Streeter, “For any adult explorers, make sure you’re looking closer to the ground – the creatures are installed at a lower height so that explorers of all ages can find them!”

WHERE TO START One of the most popular creatures can be found on an easy scenic trail along Ten Mile River at Hunts Mill in East Providence. Start close to home, and then venture out to new-to-you trails around the state.

making it easier to spot the steel sentries. And you may be surprised by what else you encounter. A late-winter visit to Frenchtown Park and Laurel Wood in East Greenwich, for instance, not only yielded a glimpse of the Rose Hip creature along Cotton Mill Trail, but also sightings of a Pileated Woodpecker, a Great Blue Heron and Hooded Mergansers in Mill Pond, spotted wintergreen under wet leaves, and fungus- and lichen-bespotted tree trunks. “Since all of the species represented by the creatures can be found in Rhode Island, they’re a great way to learn about plant species that you might not have even noticed before,” says Streeter. “I personally experienced this with flat branch clubmoss – a plant I’ve certainly walked by plenty of times, but which I recognized for the first time because I’d seen the clubmoss creature.” For avid scavenger hunt enthusiasts, the thrill of the hunt may be its own reward, but this year, there’s an added perk: partnering with local businesses, RI Walks offers prizes for anyone who completes the challenge. Gift certificates for KNEAD Doughnuts, the Providence Children’s Museum, Wright’s Dairy Farm, and Rhode Island Brewers Guild members are all on the table. With 30 creatures (on 34 trails) to spot, now is the time to get hiking!

Rhody Beer Crawl at Your Doorstep Entrepreneur crafts subscription box to encourage sampling local brews By Abbie Lahmers

hode Island’s growing craft beer scene isn’t quite as small as it used to be – and thanks to a new deliver y ser vice, soon it will be more connected than ever. “ The spark for BrewBox ignited during my travels, particularly a beer tour in Belgium, where my curiosity and appreciation for craft beer flourished,” shares beer enthusiast Bruno DaCosta. Seeking a way to curate a brewer y pilgrimage of sorts without the journey, he created the state’s first beer subscription box, set to kick off in April. For subscribers, the process is simple : sign up by choosing a preferred plan, available in boxes of six, 12, or 16 cans, and then browsing the monthly roster of ales and lagers, which are delivered right to your doorstep. A growing list of partners so far includes Apponaug Brewing , Narragansett Beer, and Shaidzon Beer Co., and DaCosta aims to have 10 when BrewBox launches. “Parallel to my love for craft beer, the communal aspect of traveling deeply resonated with me,” says DaCosta, who’s equally passionate about collaborating with local businesses, providing an outlet for them to expand their exposure and reach, getting cans into the hands of customers who may have never ventured out to their brick-and-mortar. “BrewBox seeks not only to offer a diverse beer experience but also to build a community. Through events and interactions with breweries, subscribers can connect with like-minded enthusiasts, fostering and enhancing the vibrant craft beer community in Rhode Island.” And once subscribers find their new fave brew, the Ocean State is small enough that it’s easy to motor over and see what else is on tap! Visit GetBrewBox.com for updates and to subscribe in the spring.

After overcoming two floods, sunny days are ahead at Apponaug Brewing

ou just don’t want to see a current in your brewery,” says owner Tamara McKenney about what it was like to step into Apponaug Brewing Company on the morning of December 19, after the waterfront business was flooded with 20 inches of water. While the expansive riverfront patio overlooking the Pawtuxet River is one of the brewery’s best selling points, it led many to question McKenney about whether or not she would consider relocating, particularly after the second flood hit a few weeks later. “No, that’s not going to happen,” she says. “I love our building – I looked for a year for that building. It’s one of those things that you have to make peace with. If you go up against a river, the river is going to win.” McKenney had just returned from a trip to Florida on the night of December 18, and she and her husband went straight to the brewery. The river was high and the parking lot had already flooded. By 2am, their outdoor cameras showed that the waters had reached the firepits. “It was clear we were going to be flooded.” The scene the next morning was apocalyp tic. “It sounds funny, but we kept tortilla chips in big buckets, and when we walked in, there were tortilla chips floating around,” McKenney recalls. Anything that was stored low was ruined. They lost food and 80 percent of their kitchen. The interior walls had to be removed for mold mitigation. Ever yone’s philosophy was, “ This is rare” – a once-a-decade kind of experience – “so ever yone put their heads down to clean, clean, clean.” Two days before their grand reopening, on January 9, the second flood came. “That hit differently,” McKenney said. “We realized this was not a one-off thing.” McKenney learned that before the first flood, the Scituate Reservoir had released 10 billion gallons of water, and before the second flood, another three billion gallons. “I have reached out to our congressmen. I want more assurance this isn’t going to happen again.” In any event, they knew they had to make changes. They took the bar apart and put it back

together with stainless steel instead of wood. They established flood protocols. “You have to be prudent in how you rebuild – we needed a quicker turnaround,” says McKenney. “We were able to figure that out the second time. Now we have floor drains; we learned that sandbags should go inside instead of outside. Although it’s not the kind of thing you want to get good at, we were able to open a week after the second flood.” Since then, they’ve been back and brewing, with a double IPA in January. “We usually stay away from high ABV (alcohol by volume),” McKenney explains, “but we thought after all this, we deserved it. It’s 9 percent, a nod to the nine-foot mark where the river crested.” The beer is aptly named Crested. On deck for March is a special red ale for St. Patrick’s Day. They’re also selling flood T-shirts, adorned with beavers and beers. For Craft Beer Week in March, they’ll host fun events and raffle off a specialty cornhole, flood-themed of course. “I can turn anything into a party – if it’s a flood party, it’s a flood party!” Despite the hardships they’ve faced, McKenney maintains a sense of humor and optimism. “I think it has to do with my age. Had this happened when I was younger, I would have just been angry. We have no choice but to accept this and move forward. Putting energ y into saying , ‘This shouldn’t happen’ is a lot of energ y we just don’t have. You walk the path you have to – and you do it with as much grace and joy as possible.” If there’s one thing that the flood taught the team at Apponaug Brewery, it’s that Rhode Island is a good community. “Everybody was there for us. We got support from other breweries. The state of Rhode Island was there for us. While I’m not glad about the flood, it did great things for my belief in humanity.”

ey! I was hoping I was going to see you guys today!” says the manager behind the bar at Pooch’s Pour House when a young couple sits down. They all chat for a minute and exchange updates on common friends while the bartender fetches two draft beers without asking what they want. A few minutes later, another couple enters, exchanging waves and greetings with the pair already seated. The whole scene feels familiar. When it comes to defining the classic neighborhood bar and pub experience of our lifetimes, many of us think of the iconic sitcom Cheers, about the Boston sports bar where friends gather at the end of each day for drinks and to blow off some steam. It’s comfortable, familiar, and, well, everybody knows your name.

That’s exactly the feel owner Jeff Pucci was going for when he opened Pooch’s in the heart of downtown Westerly last year. “Opening a sports bar has been a dream of mine since I was 18 years old,” he explains, and that Cheers ethos was front and center, right down to the design of the bar’s logo. “I wanted to design a bar to be everyone’s go-to place for a good time. I was thinking back to the pre-cell phone days when you couldn’t text and just ran into your friends at the local hangout for a good time.” The long , comfortable bar with exposed brick walls is supplemented by several seating areas and lots of wall-mounted televisions. But unlike Sam Malone’s Beacon Hill joint where you never saw the barflies snacking on anything but peanuts and popcorn, Pooch’s delivers big

on great eats, especially apps. The house-made Loaded Nachos feature all the fixin’s, alongside huge scoops of sour cream and what is handsdown some of the best guacamole on the planet. The Mozzarella Sticks are house-cut from fresh cheese and are about three times the size of the sad little ones you often get at a bar. You don’t often see burrata or arancini on a pub menu, but here they are, as well as 10 flavors of chicken wings, including mainstays Garlic Parm, Mango Habanero, Buffalo, and Old Bay Dry Rub. The Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich I ordered was juicy and spicy, and the Steak and Cheese Grinder was gooey and satisfying. There are a few larger items as well, such as short ribs and several pastas – the latter, in fact, seems to hold magical properties. Pucci,

a long time fan of Westerly sports, began hosting a team pasta dinner for the Westerly High School Bulldogs before they played home games – think 40 pounds of pasta, heaps of bread, and plenty of salad. The team started winning , making it to the postseason. Coach Ron Sposato sensed a good luck charm in Pooch’s, and many home-game dinners later, they finished in the postseason with a winning 9-2 record. Friendly, delicious, and even a little lucky – what more could you want in a neighborhood sports bar ?

Food News By Ken Abrams

The return of a Providence BBQ institution Originally established in 1973, Wes’ Rib House reopened in late January under new ownership with minimal fanfare as word leaked out on social media that the beloved rib joint was back in business. The new ownership team from the Crisp Restaurant Group also operates Providence Coal Fired Pizza. In addition to their famous ribs, the menu includes Southern fried chicken, vegan pulled pork, and fried catfish. “Wes’ was known for great food for a long time and we want to keep that tradition going,” says Aaron Jaehnig, an operating partner among those leading Wes’ 2.0. “We peeled the menu back to basics for now – straightforward family-style classic barbecue. We’re going to run a lot of specials and bring back crowd favorites as time goes on.” Jaehnig is also booking music and comedy in the renovated upstairs listening room. “We’re trying to ease the pain of Dusk closing,” he notes, with many former employees of the venue joining the Wes’ team. Live entertainment is scheduled for Thursdays through Sundays for now, with expanded offerings going forward. Providence, WesRibHouse.com

South County’s can’t-miss foodie event After taking a break in 2023, Narragansett Restaurant Week returns this spring, running March 22-29. Now in its 13th year, it’s one of the longest running restaurant weeks in the state. “I’m hearing a lot of enthusiasm about the week,” says Peg Fradette of the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce. “Our kickoff party is Thursday, March 21 with about 10-15 restaurants participating at The Towers in Narragansett. There will be food samples, drinks, and live music.” Expect to enjoy offerings from popular eateries like George’s of Galilee, Matunuck Oyster Bar,

30

Coast Guard House, and other favorites. “Winter can be a really difficult time for our restaurants. We are so lucky to have them stay open and viable,” says Fradette. During the off-season months before Easter, the week of dining specials gives restaurants a boost and generates excitement for local foodies. “There’s something special about holding it at The Towers, seeing the ocean as we come out of winter and welcome spring. It’s very charming, warm, and inviting ; it has a special vibe. People return year after year.” NarragansettCOC.com

A new hangout with a retro atmosphere is taking over the space formerly occupied by Celtica Public House. Restaurateur Scott Kirmil, chef Joey Piotti, and the team at Inked Restaurant Group are opening The Quencher, named after a legendary dive bar in Boston that Kirmil and his wife once frequented. “We wanted to create a cozy bar that has good food,” says Kirmil. “Some of our favorite spots are these places that surprise you when they come out with amazing food. The Quencher is named after a tiny dive in Southie that closed a while back. It’s a good barroom name, we wanted to keep that going.” “The menu features Italian bar food, including pizza, pasta made from scratch, and shareable bar snacks like fried smelts, arancini, and crispy polpette,” says Kirmil. “The vibe is ‘50s and ’60s style, old-school rock and roll music, rockabilly, and doo-wop.” The Quencher will have regular entertainment including karaoke, comedy, and outdoor music on the waterview roof deck overlooking Newport Harbor. Not only do we take great care of your skin, but also focus on relaxation and body work.” For instance, during a 90-minute facial, the service provider also administers a massage from shoulders to fingers, knees to toes – all tailored to each customer’s needs and comfort levels. This way each guest leaves both looking and feeling refreshed. Aqua’s range of hair services includes cut, color, styling, and texturing, with options for all preferences, and among their spa services, clients can choose from skin, nail, massage, waxing, and brow treatments. Soon, Lindsay will also be adding microblading to the menu of offerings. Guests often rave about the comfortable energy and collaborative atmosphere among providers. Brenda emphasizes, “As the owners of this space, it’s important to us that everyone who enters enjoys the Aqua experience.”

Deborah Goodrich Royce Novelist

While the genre of true crime is ubiquitous today, appearing in everything from documentaries to films, when DEBORAH GOODRICH ROYCE played Ted Bundy’s wife in a 1986 television miniseries – at the same time the infamous killer was awaiting execution – the salacious details of real criminals’ lives was only just becoming a rampant source of household speculation and intrigue. For esteemed author Deborah, whose career in the arts has seen many chapters over the years, a fascination of mystery and secrets has compelled her since childhood, and resonates in her thriller novels, including Reef Road, which was named one of the best books of 2023 by Kirkus Reviews. Following two women whose worlds collide when a severed hand washes ashore in the wealthy enclave of Palm Beach, Florida, Reef Road harkens back to a brush with crime Deborah’s own mother experienced at a young age when her childhood friend was killed, and the case never solved. Deborah has garnered recognition for her thriller novels, which examine “puzzles of identity,” including Finding Mrs. Ford and Ruby Falls. Her most recent, Reef Road hit Publishers Weekly’s Bestseller list, Good Morning America’s Top 15 list, and was an Indie Next pick by the American Booksellers Association for January 2023. Ruby Falls won the Zibby Award for Best Plot Twist, and Finding Mrs. Ford was hailed by Forbes, Book Riot, and Good Morning America’s “best of” lists in 2019. But before Deborah’s life story brought her to a writing career – encouraged by none other than Gene Wilder, who frequented a movie theater in Connecticut she and her husband Chuck restored – the multifaceted creative turned the page on a successful acting career. After earning a bachelor’s degree in modern foreign

languages and a minor in dance at Lake Erie College in Ohio, she headed for New York, where she landed a role on popular soap opera All My Children in the ‘80s, and then LA, appearing in multiple films and TV shows. While raising her two children, she turned to working as a story editor at Miramax Films, developing Emma and early versions of Chicago and A Wrinkle in Time. Well-known in Westerly for her loving restoration of the Ocean House Hotel, Deborah and Chuck have also restored United Theatre, Savoy Bookshop & Café, and other revitalization projects in Rhode Island and beyond. Today, the Ocean House Author Series turns the seaside destination of Watch Hill into a literary hub, attracting world-class authors and fans to salon-style conversations facilitated by Deborah. Past authors have included Zibby Owens, Emma Straub, Annabel Monaghan, Zain Asher, and many more. On March 20, the series brings Jeffrey Blount to the Ocean House. In the pages of our own Hey Rhody magazine, Deborah writes a regular Rhody Reads column, sharing essential titles to add to your TBR list, with picks for all types of readers and every season, whether you’re cozying up inside on a cold day with a page-turning drama or seeking a new thriller to get lost in. Immersed in the Ocean State’s literary network, Deborah often highlights titles by local authors, many even featuring familiar Rhode Island locale. Whether penning probing psychological thrillers or giving a platform to authors at the luxurious Ocean House, Deborah’s next chapter is sure to be as absorbing as the last.

every item on the client’s wishlist – determining what’s doable, and what’s a little more difficult to work in the space – and finds a satisfying solution. Once a plan is decided, the fun really begins: choosing a color palette, with fixtures, paint, fabric, and other details to follow. Perhaps most impressive is the number of bathrooms Kim has designed over the years – “hundreds,” she says, laughing. “I love my work in general and love creating all sorts of interiors. But designing bathrooms is always particularly rewarding. They’re a high ticket room to renovate, and people don’t go into it willy-nilly. Most often, the bathrooms are pretty outdated by the time the clients are ready to remake them.” That makes the before/after transformation fun, not to mention dramatic.

Kim Elliott-Peterson Owner & Designer

The most gratifying part of my job is helping people to create the home they have longed for.

Considering Kim Elliott-Peterson has been rearranging furniture since working babysitting gigs as a kid – the families coming home to happy children and sleeker floorplans – it’s fair to say she’s been “designing” since an early age. Today the owner of KEP INTERIOR DESIGNS, INC consults with her clients before jumping into a project – and savors every step of the process. “I love to work on comprehension projects where I am involved from the onset and right up until the last piece of artwork is hung,” says Kim. “I like digging deep into how clients live, what colors appeal to them, how they want their home to function and flow to create an end result they’ll love and wouldn’t have thought of

on their own.” From entire home additions to kitchens to bathrooms (her favorite), Kim is eager to tackle any size of project. Kim graduated from URI with a degree in textiles and design, and has won several design awards for her work. “Feeling comfortable with your designer is key,” she says, noting that she’s stepping into some truly intimate spaces when renovating something like a master bedroom or bath. “Conversations can get pretty detailed, down to ‘do you shave in the shower?’ If so, ‘do we need to install a mirror for the face, or a toe-hold for the legs?’” After the initial meeting, she tours the entire home to ensure the new design is cohesive with the design elements that already exist throughout, and addresses

While Kim may have been dubbed “Queen of the Potty” by a client, she also sees her work as an opportunity to change people’s perceptions of interior designers. “Over the years, designers got a bad rap and are often seen as pushy. That’s not how I work,” she says. “Working with a designer can be lots of fun and can save you time and stress that comes with a renovation. I might not always personally love what the clients pick, but I love it for them.” Whether you are updating an aging bathroom into a sanctuary or planning a full-scale home renovation, Kim can help you realize your dream project. “The most gratifying part of my job is helping people to create the home they have longed for,” she says. “The thing that makes me the happiest at the end of a project is when I leave the client with a hug. I know they’re thrilled with the space I’ve created for them, and that I’ve made a friend!”

A HOLISTIC APPROACH When Rose discovered the relief natural methods could offer in her own life, she knew she wanted to help others seeking a more holistic path. “Dedicating my life to health and wellness has been a mission of mine after developing a severe skin condition, digestive and thyroid issues all stemming from stress,” Rose made the career change from banking to esthetician, which she’s now done for 24 years. “My goal since opening the spa nine years ago has been to combine non-invasive technologies and holistic services with clean products that offer healthy, glowing skin and a space to heal and relax,” she says. Over the years she has furthered her education as an Herbalist, Aromatherapist, Certified Health and Ayurvedic Lifestyle Instructor and Ashtanga Yoga Practitioner. “The more I learn, the more I am able to help others.” HEALING TECHNOLOGY Rose spends time researching before bringing anything new to the spa. “Our non-invasive, targeted technologies help to heal, alleviate pain, and achieve whole body wellness,” explains Rose. “We provide personalized treatment plans, along with exceptional services that complement their wellness journey.” Pure Eco Spa, which earned “Best Day Spa” by Rhode Island Monthly 2021-2022 and “Best Facials” by The Day, offers two infrared saunas, a red light therapy bed, and newest additions, a lymphatic compression suit and microcurrent body sculpting. All of these holistic technologies

provide detoxification and weight loss that will visibly shape, tone, and tighten the body, along with a healthy lifestyle plan, pain relief by improving oxygen levels, and lymphatic drainage to help fight inflammation and chronic conditions. “We have packages that can help to support whatever health and lifestyle goals you may be working on.” OWNING YOUR WELLNESS “Taking control with diet, exercise, and stress-relief self-care practices is essential to our health and wellbeing,” says Rose, whose mission, along with the spa’s highly qualified staff, is to give people the tools to do just that. “Our new Garden Oasis by the forest edge is a private retreat offering another level of wellness and self care. Rose has created something truly unique in the community: a comprehensive healing and wellness center that, above all, cares about the client’s needs. “We’ve created a welcoming space to take time for yourself, prioritizing self care which allows you to heal, learn, and grow.” Whether you’re taking inventory of your wellness for the first time or looking for a new path to healing, Pure Eco Spa is here for you.

Caroline Chang, MD, FAAD Board Certified Dermatologist & Founder of Rhode Island Dermatology Institute

My patients know that building a trusting relationship with your doctor is the first step in getting the most out of their visits and treatments. Whether it’s a medical visit or a cosmetic concern, I look at each patient as an individual and tailor the treatments to their concerns. Direct online booking streamlines the process of getting an appointment, which average 30 minutes and are often available the same day or same week. Once you’re in Dr. Chang’s care, you get her honest, informed opinion and there’s never any pressure to go through with a procedure. “My patients know that building a trusting relationship with your doctor is the first step in getting the most out of their visits and treatments. Whether it’s a medical visit or a cosmetic concern, I look at each patient as an individual and tailor the treatments to their concerns,” she says. “I specifically focus on low-downtime procedures because my patients are like me – busy and can’t take time off!”

Photography by Nick DelGiudice

Just like every work of art is unique, so is each individual face. That’s why Dr. Caroline Chang’s treatments are never cookie cutter – the dermatologist and founder of the RHODE ISLAND DERMATOLOGY INSTITUTE works closely with each patient to build trust and find the best possible procedure. “It’s the best feeling when my patients have full confidence in me and trust me with their faces,” relays Dr. Chang, who started her practice from scratch five years ago. “Those five years have been extremely rewarding and also challenging. I had to rebuild my patient base and navigate COVID. Through it all I’ve grown so much as a dermatologist and a business owner.” Offering Botox, dermal fillers, laser treatments (for skin rejuvenation, rosacea, and hair removal), chemical peels, non-surgical thread lift, brown spot and mole removal, Dr. Chang manages all aspects of the business, from marketing to performing procedures. With a focus on taking the time to listen to patients’ individual needs in order to reach their personal goals, Dr. Chang runs a direct care office, meaning insurance isn’t accepted and a fee is paid at the time of the appointment (often the same cost as a copay for seeing a dermatologist). “I became disillusioned with the healthcare system, which was causing overworked doctors, short visits for patients, and general dissatisfaction,” she explains of this choice. “In this model, I spend more time with my patients, you see an actual doctor at each visit, I am accessible by phone or email for all my patients, and I am the one that responds to these messages.”

Dr. Chang’s accolades and professional memberships speak to her accomplishments in the field. A Board Certified Dermatologist since 2012, she’s earned awards from Providence Business News, and serves as a member of the Review Board for Prevention Magazine, as well as several professional societies, including the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Rhode Island Dermatology Society (RIDS), and others. Her track record of happy patients is testament to her skilled work. An artist herself (with an art history degree from Princeton), Dr. Chang has a knack for evaluating form and balance when it comes to cosmetic treatments with a “less is more” approach. Guiding patients through small steps to achieve their desired results – within their budget – takes precedence. “When done correctly, no one should know you’ve had a cosmetic treatment. That is my goal,” says Dr. Chang. “You should look better but not different. Glowing and confident, not obvious. I want to be my patient’s best kept secret!”

CASSIE’S CANS had its humble beginning in 2015 when Collinson was working for her father’s rooter business. “As a kid, I remember having an obsession with making a few bucks on my own, running lemonade stands, yard sales, and fundraising,” says Cassie. “Fast forward to my 20-year-old self asking my dad what he thought about me opening a rental business. We laughed at the idea of porta johns, but I also thought this was potentially a really good idea. I obsessed over a business plan and drew it all out. My parents, extremely supportive of the idea, put a lien against their house, so I could be approved for a $68,000 loan. I purchased 20 plastic toilets and a flatbed truck with a tank. The rest is history! At times I feel like my only memory of my 20s was building Cassie’s Cans from scratch.” Since her Leading Ladies debut in 2021, Cassie returns three years later to proudly report she’s nearly doubled her portable toilet inventory and fleet

of service trucks. Construction sites still continue to boom in RI’s economy, allowing Cassie and her diverse team of men and women to service hundreds of commercial and residential job sites each week. Whether routine or addressing a concern, visiting the doctor is no one’s favorite outing, but at HARBOUR DIRECT PRIMARY CARE, INC, every patient can feel empowered to take their health into their own hands. Bringing 24 years of post-graduate experience to her practice, owner and physician Dr. Wendy Regan treats patients through a prevention lens. “Many disease states take years to develop but often with simple, sustained lifestyle changes, patients can change this trajectory and prevent illnesses,” she explains. “Having a Direct Primary Care practice allows me to spend more time with patients so I may coach and encourage them to develop habits that free them from disease and the need for expensive medications.” From non-pharmaceutical options treating urinary incontinence to administering a non-invasive, needle- and chemical-free face lift procedure called EMFACE, Dr. Wendy seeks to minimize risk as much as possible. Though following a recipe isn’t her style, behind the mouth-watering loaves baked fresh at SOUTH COUNTY BREAD COMPANY is the industrious coowner Keri Lyn Collins, whose creativity, progressive vision, and passion for customer service has helped make the bakery a Wakefield mainstay over the past three years. Balancing each other’s strengths, she and husband Jeff, AKA “the bread guy,” have fostered a community while striving to make their bread business feel like an extension of their home. Keri Lyn enjoys the arts, travel, and people. She manages the front of house, marketing, and oversees the customer experience. Until the bakery’s opening, Keri Lyn was pursuing a master’s degree in art education at RIC. To fill her creative cup, she plans to weave the arts into the fabric of the bakery by showcasing more local artists and hosting community workshops.

“I hope to encourage more women to feel empowered and value what they bring to the table.” The bakery is now offering catering and is available to host private events as well as prepare care packages for any occasions.

EMMA PHANEUF Owner “Back to your roots” has a special meaning for Emma Phaneuf, who owns SHICKASHEEN FARM with her husband, Rob. Growing up, Emma spent countless hours helping tend her family’s gardens and greenhouse, but strayed far from the field with a career in real estate as an adult. At this time, she met Rob, whose grandparents founded Shickasheen Farm. However, when his grandfather passed, his grandmother Mary was forced to scale back operations. In 2018, Emma started helping Mary on the farm. “While I had some knowledge of plants, I still had a lot to learn,” Emma admits. After a couple of summers, the couple decided to make it their full-time job once Mary was ready to retire – and Emma was determined to breathe new life into Shickasheen. She leveraged the power of social media, propelling their business and online presence. In 2021, at age 95, Mary officially turned over the reins.

Sandra Cutting, the owner of the Wakefield office of H&R BLOCK for over 36 years, enjoys guiding clients through the complex maze of income taxes. Whether you’re seeking answers about your investment income or filing taxes and have income in multiple states – and any number of other special circumstances – Sandra can help you navigate the complex and ever-changing financial landscape with expertise and grace: “In the previous year, we completed returns for clients whether living in state or in Florida or across the nation.” Sandra has a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island and is an enrolled agent (EA). As an EA, she completes 32 hours of continuing professional education every year to stay current on the new tax laws and the impact for her clients. A friendly woman with an easy laugh, Sandra is committed to her community and profession. A proud Rotarian for the past 34 years, she served as the first woman president of the

Wakefield Rotary Club and has been the chairperson of the Rotary’s Narragansett Art Festival for the past six years. She also taught accounting at RWU as an adjunct professor. In addition to Sandra, there are eight experienced tax professionals in the Wakefield H&R Block office, which recently earned recognition as one of the Top 100 franchises in the United States – a huge honor given annually to franchises that deliver strong business performance and drive meaningful growth for the company. “Our top franchises show an unwavering dedication to living out our purpose, which is to provide help to our clients,” shared Roxanne Harris, vice president of franchise operations at H&R Block, in a press release. “We are grateful for the human care and expertise they demonstrate day in and out and couldn’t be more honored to recognize their hard work.” Says Sandra, “We’re a great team, and looking forward to helping our clients this year.”

The concept of “one medicine” in the veterinary profession refers to the similarities in human and animal health, promoting collaboration to understand and treat diseases, and it’s an idea that Dr. Amy Pratt takes a step further: “In my mind, this extends to the one world we share and the health of the natural systems. People need to understand more about the natural world.” The owner of WEST GREENWICH ANIMAL HOSPITAL, with husband Dr. Ralph Pratt, Dr. Amy and her team help families understand anatomy, physiology, health, and sickness in an approachable way. An advocate for education, she also founded THE GREENE SCHOOL, a charter high school with a rigorous pre-college curriculum which focuses on environmental issues. Dr. Amy holds degrees from the University of Rhode Island and Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. “I love helping animals and the families who love them,” she shares. “I like listening to people, helping them

understand what is going on with their pets, and which options work for them in terms of veterinary care.” Open since 1995, West Greenwich Animal Hospital provides care for cats and dogs with a passionate team of employees who love working together, and the Pratts also mentor new professionals in the field. “The pandemic has been stressful in the veterinary world and many people have had trouble finding care, but Ralph and I have been committed to helping animals.” Serving on the board of The Greene School, the state’s only EL (Expeditionary Learning) school, Dr. Amy is proud of the institution’s broad, diverse reach, with a student body coming from over 26 school districts. The 70-acre campus in West Greenwich will see the addition of two classrooms this summer to improve science education. “The world needs environmentally literate citizens and leaders from all backgrounds,” says Dr. Amy. “When I hear of our graduates going on to now graduate from college, I know what a difference The Greene School has made.”

s Rhode Islanders, it’s nice to remind ourselves from time to time that we live in a tourist destination. Looking from the outside in, national media outlets including Travel + Leisure, People, and The New York Times have all recently touted the charms of the smallest state, not to mention that Newport consistently tops lists of best places in the country to get married. Sometimes the best way to appreciate what you’ve got is to revisit it with a fresh set of eyes and immerse yourself like a traveler. Here, you’ll find a year of ideas, pairing places with things to do and where to stay. In most cases, you only need to park the car once, so you can explore by foot or public transportation, which only adds to the feel of being off on an adventure. We’ve aimed to include a range of price points and encourage researching year-round rates for the best fit for your budget. If we missed your favorite, please let us know by sending an email to marketing@heyrhody.com

Providence

THE BEATRICE

Events like Providence Restaurant Weeks and Rhode Island Brew Fest make January perfect for a city sleepover. There’s nothing like knowing that after a night on the town, a beautifully appointed room – with a heated toilet seat – awaits. Since its 2021 opening, The Beatrice has received praise from Condé Nast Traveler (ranked #6 Best Hotel in the Northeast) and on Tripadvisor (#1 hotel in the Providence market). Elegant first impressions aside, this boutique hotel is full of heart (named for the owner’s beloved mom) with thoughtful details at every turn. Rooms are contemporary and comfortable, and while there is a long list of amenities, guests are quick to gush about the Dyson hair dryers and bidets (with various settings). Enjoy an Italian meal at posh onsite Bellini Providence, before heading to the private Bellini Rooftop for craft cocktails backdropped by the skyline. Along with ongoing deals, look for pop-up specials that connect stays with popular attractions. TheBeatrice.com

Encompassing 10 days, the schedule truly has something for everyone: live music performances, scavenger hunts, trail rides, walking tours, workshops, sports clinics, and more. Having lodgings close to the action enables rolling out of bed for earlyriser plans like the Aquidneck Growers Market at Stoneacre Garden, and doing the hustle after dark at the OceanCliff Hotel Silent Disco. Not just for weddings, historic OceanCliff has guest rooms in the main building and the four-bedroom Gatehouse – many with sleigh beds and ocean or estate views – so you can wander to your room after the last dance. During summertime, Weekapaug Inn is a parade of color with lobster boils, sundresses, and yellow pool umbrellas, but in the thick of winter, it’s equally spectacular. Far from bright lights, after dark, the back lawn becomes a stargazer’s wonderland. Adirondack chairs are at the ready, and if you’re lucky, the firepit is ablaze and s’mores kits are nearby ; on those special nights when the stars align, embark on a moonlit paddle on Quonochontaug Pond led by the resident naturalist. Back inside, a cozy bed fitted with luxur y linens awaits. Spend days playing board games by the fireplace in common rooms, or on beach or birding expeditions, donning boots borrowed from the Hunter closet. The atmosphere extends to The Restaurant, where chef Andrew Brooks ser ves farmto -table dishes (don’t skip the biscuits). Dinner, a Show, and Breakfast in Matunuck In the South Kingstown village of Matunuck, expect to find the trappings of a beach town worth its weight in salt: a surf shop, beloved pub, bar that hosts live music, and places for ice cream, pizza, sandwiches, and coffee. Within a small radius, there is also the renowned Matunuck Oyster Bar, and equally acclaimed barn playhouse, Bill Hanney’s Theatre by the Sea. The former brings gastronomic tourists from NYC and the latter puts on Broadway-caliber shows – starting up with May’s A Chorus Line. Until 2021, there was no place nearby to stay (and avoid the pitch-black drive home). Enter Admiral Dewey Inn, a 12-guestroom house, locally owned and operated. Turn Gaspee Days into a Weekend with Gregory Hill Boutique Vacation Cottages Rhode Islanders need not wait until July to celebrate the red, white, and blue, when there’s Pawtuxet Village in June. This charming riverside enclave gets festooned with a flag on every pole along Broad Street in preparation for Gaspee Days, a commemoration of the 1772 burning of the HMS Gaspee, considered the first violent act against the Crown by the colonists leading up to the American Revolution. Activities are planned around the clock and the entire area feels like a party. Booking a Gregory Hill Boutique Cottage ensures you don’t miss a beat – no need to fret about parking or a designated driver. Each cottage is styled in coastal-chic perfection, so live like a Nancy Meyers character as you lounge on a plump sofa prior to venturing to the farmers market before Saturday’s parade, or perhaps enjoy the Perfect Picnic add-on while witnessing Sunday’s Burning of the Gaspee at Pawtuxet Park. There is some sort of fete happening year-round in Wickford. Even if you don’t go just to shop and dine, or experience village-wide events like Daffodil Days (April), Wicked Weeks (October), or the Festival of Lights (December), chances are you’ve been to the Wickford Art Festival. Each July, Wilson Park becomes a fairgrounds of canopy tents where browsers can view the work of over 200 artists in a wide variety of mediums. While there’s plenty of food available at the festival, village restaurants are just a half-mile walk away – with everything from juice bars to cafes to waterfront dining. Nearby is the Blue Beach Motel, an underthe-radar spot along Post Road. All 21 rooms and suites have been completely renovated with a shoreline palette of aqua, white, and gray. While it may still feel like summer, the return of college students infuses a mix of fall and academia into the air. The city aims to impress with some kind of fest most ever y weekend – from seafood to veg to beer – and while the WaterFire 2024 schedule is TBD at press time, last September saw two full lightings. Downtown has many excellent hotels, but if you’re seeking a uniquely New England experience, head to the Olneyville area. Dye House is a boutique hotel and event space that takes its cue from its origins as a textile mill. Since opening in 2020, the owners have worked to be boosters of the neighborhood, connecting the dots for g uests to hyper-local activities, shops, and eats, including Wes’ Rib House, a beloved joint recently resuscitated. Love a good ghost story or want a tale of your own? Make a reservation at General Stanton Inn. Mindfully renovated and reopened in 2022, the grand yellow property is rich with history and has hosted notable guests since 1740, including being a “room where it happened” with Generals Washington and Lafayette, and a stop on the Underground Railroad. Visits must begin at the Tavern, where over a sumptuous meal with craft beers and specialty cocktails (save room for the skillet cookie with ice cream), servers are ready to dish about spectral encounters with The General, one of his young daughters, or the ghost cat. Cozy up in one of 15 well-appointed guest rooms, either updated Colonial spaces in the main house or deluxe coastal-themed rooms on the western side of the property, and consider sleeping with one eye open on spirit watch. SANTA’S ROOM

THE SPA

When a hotel has a suite called Santa’s Secret Hideaway, you know it’s a special place. Each year children await the Santa Checks In event at Ocean House, where the big guy is on hand to hear lists and give small gifts. The yellow beachfront resort in the Watch Hill area of Westerly is the only AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five-Star hotel in the state, and has a full schedule of annual traditions. Make memories while creating wreaths, ornaments, truffle trees, and more at workshops; reserve a spot at holiday brunches and dinners; and marvel at the gingerbread house before grabbing a sweet from the candy bar. The Relais & Châteaux property has 49 guest rooms and 20 signature suites, all outfitted with thoughtful touches and luxe amenities. For grown-ups seeking relaxation amidst the merriness, the Ocean & Harvest Spa puts the “treat” in treatment, especially with seasonal offerings like 2023’s Sugar Cookie Massage – an absolute indulgence of vanilla oil and house-made nutmeg sugar scrub. From North Kingstown to NYC to PVD, a visual artist creates a colorful home By Elyse Major

hen East Side homeowner Leah Pisari came across the trending interior hashtag “museum bookstore,” it resonated, giving a name to her own predilection toward styling bookcases, composing galler y walls, and furnishing spaces with tactile materials and graphic punch. Indeed, the home she shares with her husband Ed and their two pets since March 2020, is skillfully outfitted with storied heirlooms, art work, and trinkets. “I have traditional elements like the green couch and the dining room table, while mixing in the mid-centur y console and eclectic decorating ,” says Pisari.

Raised in North Kingstown, Pisari left the state for Maryland to earn her Master of Fine Arts, then lived and worked in New York City. When she landed a job at her undergrad alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, as a visual media specialist at the Harrington School, she knew she wanted to live in Providence – particularly the East Side – for its walkability and access to cafes and downtown. “ We viewed three or four places, fell in love with our home, and got it right in time,” she recalls. “ We

Gray walls on the main level are a neutral foil for artwork while swaths of blue appear on kitchen cabinetry and upstairs walls; green is also a constant on both couches and leaf y plants. “I wanted greens to bring in a pop of color in the sea of blues.” Accents like textiles infuse dashes of reds, pinks, and yellows. “I like my ability to combine seemingly mismatched pieces. Going Places

A trio of Rhody entrepreneurs turning hobbies into side-hustles By Ruthie Wood

R

hode Island has a histor y of food trucks reaching all the way back to 1872, and in recent years, food truck catering for bites, meals, or desserts has been a booming trend for events along with outdoor markets. But the trucks don’t have to be just for food. Three women – Gianna Grande, Jill Lucena, and Chelsea Smith – are among those capitalizing on convenience by turning hobbies – and sometimes vehicles – into their livelihoods.

ITALIAN COOKIES

Biscotti Bar Photos courtesy of (clockwise) Boho Bead Bar, Biscotti Bar, and Sea Smith Candle Co.

Gianna Grande’s micro version of a dessert truck is a peddler cart named The Biscotti Bar. The idea was born out of a love of the family tradition of baking over a dozen different kinds of cookies and crafting the assortment into trays around the holidays. “Biscotti means twice baked. It is baked once in a loaf, then sliced, and baked again on its side.” Pistachio, almond, and oatmeal chocolate chip are her best-selling flavors, but the bar also offers other types of Italian cookies to choose from – including wine biscuits – a Grande favorite; all are baked with help from her mother and sister. Hosts can order a personalized Italian cookie bar and have cookie bags as party favors. North Providence, TheBiscottiBar.square.site

BESPOKE BRACELETS After 20 years of handcrafting jewelry from sea glass to upcycled materials, Jill Lucena created Boho Bead Bar in July of 2023 to share the experience of “working with color and blending materials to create unique, meaningful pieces,” she explains. The bead bar – an eight-footlong table with Lucena at the helm, crafting bracelets on the spot – allows individuals to design their own bracelet, from wire to beads, and watch it be made in under three minutes via a bead spinner. It’s a chance to have “family and friends laughing and creating together,” Lucena says, and at the end of the night, all guests receive a signature bracelet designed by the host to commemorate the special event. SIGNATURE SCENTS For her winter wedding , Chelsea Smith wanted candles to set the ambiance, but struggled to find a non-toxic, long-burning candle, so she made her own from soy wax and essential oils, filling vintage mason jars. Before long , she turned her hobby into Sea Smith Candle Co.; more recently, she and her husband transformed a horse trailer into a traveling candle cart allowing Smith to visit local markets and events. Pouring is not done on-site but party hosts can work with Smith to select or customize fragrances in advance. “Love Spell and Crème Brulee are probably two of my most popular,” says Smith, who offers that her candle cart can be a fun element at bridal and baby showers.
