Letters Wide Open Spaces For me, August is a month unlike any other. It’s the only time of year when I find myself actively appreciating every moment, trying to soak in all of the sunshine and the scenery around me, letting the warmth and beauty of a Rhode Island summer recharge my batteries to get me through the rest of the year until it comes back around again. It’s also the only time of year I actually want to be out in nature, and there’s no better place to do that than in South County’s beautiful green spaces. This month, we look at four unique outdoor settings, and talk to the people who maintain them. After

all, these spaces are only as good as the people who make them beautiful. From the idyllic Wilcox Park in Westerly to the historicity of Smith’s Castle in Wickford, read on about parks in southern Rhode Island, and then go check them out for yourself.

From our Facebook Friends We asked our Facebook friends what their favorite part of summer in South County is – and, of course, gave one lucky responder a gift certificate to Weekapaug Inn as a thank you. Here are some of our favorite responses. To win your own prizes, like So Rhode Island on Facebook.

Rock out and help raise money for Rhode Island’s kids at the 14th Annual Rock-N-Jock Charities Night. Founded in 2000, Rock-N-Jock Charities has worked for 14 years to raise funds for the children of Rhode Island experiencing life altering illnesses and disabilities. Their annual Charities Night takes place at the Crowne Plaza Garden Pavilion in Warwick on August 10. The event will include performances from John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, Steve Smith & The Nakeds, Skip Martin (Kool & the Gang, Dazz Band) and Southside Johnny. A golf tournament will follow the next day at the Potowomut Golf Club in Warwick. 21+ only. Tickets are $35

and will benefit Children’s Charities of Rhode Island. For more info email rocknjockcharities@cox.net or visit the website. 801 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick. www.rocknjockcharities.com. Not everything about the summer is perfect for kids – especially kids who depend on free meals at school for full bellies every morning and afternoon. Knowing that the North Kingstown Food Pantry is particularly strained during the summer, JW Graham and the Yes! Gallery are doing their part to help by hosting a Feed the Pantry fundraiser during the month of August. For each donation a customer makes, that person will receive a coupon for a future visit: 10% off for $10, 20% off for $20, 30% off for $30. In addition, store owners Palmer and Julie Beebe will match all of the donations made this month. Everyone Deserves a Free Pass Ever just want a free pass? Rhode Island-based artist Rachel Cyrene Blackman is making it happen. She started the Free Pass Project in 2014, which is an interactive public art project that promotes community by way of handmade free pass tokens. These little orange discs, randomly distributed in public places or passed person to person, grant their beholders understanding and compassion, and acknowledge that we all need a break sometimes. The project hopes to encourage people to pay the token forward and share their own unique experience (how they received it and how they used it) on the Free Pass Project Facebook page. In the end, the stories unite us in our daily struggles and inspire us with the kindness we can proliferate. The state is doing its part too; the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, the Rhode Island general Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts have all pitched in, a testament to the power we have to uplift others. Look out for Free Pass token jars around the state and most of all, keep an open mind you never know when you might get a free pass, and who else might need one too. www.thefreepassproject.com -Audrey Falk

Narragansett Beer’s New Beach-Friendly Flavor “Beer on the beach” – pleasing to say, and even more pleasing to experience. Narragansett Beer’s latest entry in their Private Stock series tries to bottle this quintessential summertime leisure with its Town Beach Imperial Pale Ale. The limited-edition craft beer features 22 ounces of “German and American ingredients,” starting with a pale malt and German pilsner base for a citrus character. Nugget, Chinook and Hallertau hops infuse a bitter magic while a blonde malt adds a smoothness and approachability. Brew maestro Sean Larkin concocted the downtime-ready brew at Buzzard’s Bay Brewing Co. in Westport, MA. You can pick up a bomber bottle of sweet beach dreams for $5.99 in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. An ABV of 8.1% will surely help you in reaching the dreamy beach scene featured on the label: reclining on soft, glimmering sand as you stare out at the slowly ebbing waves. www.narragansettbeer.com –Alexander Castro

The Ocean House’s Day in the Sun The Ocean House in Watch Hill deserves a round of applause. The golden crown of Westerly’s exclusive enclave just earned its biggest recognition yet: Travel + Leisure has ranked it the #1 resort in the Continental US and the #5 hotel in the world. The Ocean House, which underwent a $146 million renovation in 2004 and boasts a 13-acre property overlooking the bluffs of Watch Hill, direct access to private white-sand beach, a croquet lawn, putting green, gardens, fine dining and a 5-star spa, has gotten plenty of love in the past – from Condé Nast Traveler, Forbes, and Fodor’s, no less. For diners, spa-goers, hotel guests and visitors, there’s no experience like summering at the Ocean House, or even just spending an evening at a Thursday night clambake. So let’s raise a glass – and our pinkies – and drink to their success. www.oceanhouseri.com -Audrey Falk

Other Reasons to love Block Island

You know about the beaches and mopeds and the insanely catchy ferry theme song, but the island’s got more to offer than what you find in the brochures. By John Taraborelli

1

Getting there is part of the fun

The Block Island ferry now offers high-speed service out of Pt. Judith, Newport and Fall River. While the swankier digs of the high-speed ferry are nice, I’m just as happy on the slow boat. If I’m heading to the island, I’m not in a hurry to be anywhere – and with a bar on board and lots of friendly day and weekend trippers eager to make new friends along the way, why rush? www.blockislandferry.com

<<

The high speed ferry, Athena, takes guests to Block Island from Point Judith in around 30 minutes

2

You can beat the crowds – and the budget

Photo: (Top) Meghan Follett, (Bottom) Alli Coate

Head to the island at peak times (Fourth of July, anyone?) and you’re likely to cram onto a packed ferry and pay top rates for your hotel room. But book your stay in the shoulder season – like early June or after Labor Day – or even mid-week during the height of summer, and you’ll not only pay less for your accommodations, but find smaller crowds everywhere. www.blockislandreservations.com

3

The off-season is fun, too

While it would be charitable to call Block Island “quiet” in the depths of winter, it’s still worth the trip well into fall. This year’s second installment of Taste of Block Island, where you get shopping discounts and food samples for a mere $5, happens from September 26-28. Then, on the weekend of Black Friday (November 28-30), the Christmas Shopping Stroll offers special sales at more than 30 one-of-a-kind shops. www.blockislandchamber.com

4

The music is free

Whether you’re drinking out of a pineapple while dancing to a cove band at Ballard’s, taking a week off from work to enjoy the Block Island Music Festival at Captain Nick’s Rock n Roll Bar (sadly, you already missed this one back in June),

celebrating Jamaican Independence Day (August 6) at Poor People’s Pub, listening to Blues on the Block at Fred Benson Town Beach (also August 6), jamming to the local music of ConserFest (August 9 and 10) or bringing a lawn chair along to the Summer Concert Series at St. Andrews Parish Center (August 6 and 20, September 3), you won’t need to pay a cover. www.captainnicksbi.com, www.pppbi.com, www.conserfest.org

5

You can study all sorts of nature…

The Block Island Maritime Institute will get you up close and personal with sea life. The Nature Conservancy and the Block Island Conservancy will introduce you to the island’s rare and endangered species.

And the Abrams Animal Farm will put you face-to-face with camels, llamas, sheep, goats and emus – and a zeedonk (you heard me). www.bimaritime.com, www. biconservancy.org, www.blockislandguide.com

6

…Or just stroll through it

The national nonprofit The Nature Conservancy has named Block Island one of its “Last Great Places,” and indeed, over 40% of the island is set aside for conservation efforts. That means nearly 30 miles of unspoiled hiking trails for you to explore via the Greenway network, plus plenty of out-of-the-way, unspoiled beaches that will draw you away from the crowds and back to nature. www.nature.org August 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Yellow Kittens Tavern is a great spot to stop for a frosty mid-day beverage

Getting caught in a mudslide is fun here

Ninety-nine times out of a hundred I’d sooner be caught drinking straight grain alcohol than some collection of sugary booze, ice and dessert condiments masquerading as a cocktail. That hundredth time is the one where I’m sitting on the deck at Yellow Kittens midday (after an early morning beach trip, of course) and drinking a frozen mudslide out of a plastic cup straight from the slushy machine. Then there’s nothing in the world I want more. Find Yellow Kittens on Facebook.

Narrated by Jessica Willi, the Executive Director of the Block Island Tourism Council and a lifelong resident, it will spin you around all the local favorites. www.so-new.org/tour/block-island-bicycle-tour

9

It has its own ghost story

The Palatine, a passenger ship sailing to Philadelphia from Germany in 1738, was beset by disaster throughout its journey – violent storms, tainted water, depleted provisions and the deaths of about half the crew – until it ran onto the rocks off Block Island’s shore and supposedly burst into flames. An 1867 narrative poem published in the Atlantic Monthly told a more sinister tale of islanders luring the ship aground to loot its stores, but either way the legend holds that you can still sometimes see the specter of its ghostly sails blazing off the island’s Sandy Point.

10

Hebe, not Rebecca, has the last laugh

The famed Statue of Rebecca was erected in 1896 by the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement as a monument to teetotalling. Of course, five minutes on the island is all the evidence you need that the message never got through. Perhaps that’s because a closer inspection of the statue reveals a bit of a mix-up: instead of the biblical figure Rebecca at the Well, it’s actually a carving of Hebe, cupbearer to the notoriously libertine Greek gods.

It’s Easy

(BeiNg GrEen) Inside our beautiful public green spaces By Rebecca Remillard • Photography Blink of an Eye Photography

They say it’s not easy being green, but in southern Rhode Island, in the heart of the summer, it’s effortless. Beautiful green spaces, open to the public, dot our communities from Westerly to North Kingstown. Whether grown for food or for aesthetic appreciation, for education or for preservation, these amazing gardens and the people who maintain them will keep us at odds with Kermit all month long.

A People’s Park Westerly’s Wilcox Park is part green dream, part educational center In the heart of Westerly’s business district dwells a haven. Wilcox Park is a vision of open meadows fish pond, perennial and annual flower beds and an arboretum-quality collection of tree species. Alan Peck superintendent of the seven acre park since 2001, explains that Wilcox serves three purposes: that of a community space, an arboretum (“An incredible collection for such a small space,” says Peck) and a historic park, dotted with monuments and memorials. With a mission that revolves around learning through nature, Wilcox Park has been approved as an official University of Rhode Island Master Gardeners Site. The Master Gardener Program started in 1977 when 19 participants completed training to become horticultural information volunteers for the URI Cooperative Extension. At present, more than 700 volunteers are active in the program, working to educate Rhode Islanders with their extensive knowledge of gardening and environmental information. At Wilcox Park, the URI Master Gardeners seek to accomplish their education and outreach mission through three projects. The first project, now complete, was the installation of native plants in a

formal garden. “It is the one and only formal space in the park. Everything is linear and geometric,” says Alan Peck, adding, “The space looks great in the morning and at dusk.” The vision of this project was to educate the public on the benefits and splendor of using native plants in their own landscapes. The second project will be the renovation and maintenance of an existing rain garden in the park and to educate the public on its benefits. The third and final project will be to conduct docent tours, including a tour of the Native Plan Demo Gardens, Rain Garden and the Park’s eight Rhode Island Champion Trees. Events this August include a URI Master Gardeners Rain Garden Tour on August 9, and a URI Master Gardener Champion Tree Tour on August 23, both starting at 10am. In addition, a Master Gardener kiosk in Wilcox Park provides free soil tests on the second Saturday of every month, June through October. It is said that in 1898 when Harriet Wilcox first purchased and donated the park to the Memorial and Library association, it was announced that, “The people shall have a park.” And still, they do. 71 ½ High Street, Westerly. 596-2877.

Historic Beauty The Sunken Garden at The Elms gives visitors a trip back in time

Photos courtesy of Preservation Society of Newport County

Peering out from the windows of The Elms, one of Newport’s historic mansions, you won’t even see it. This is because the Sunken Garden at The Elms is, in fact, sunken below the level of the main lawn. “The element of surprise is one of the great characteristics of this garden,” says Trudy Coxe, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Preservation Society of Newport County, a non-profit organization that operates the Newport Mansions. Visitors who cross the expansive lawn, explore the marble tea pavilions and investigate the three elaborate fountains are in for a treat. Marble steps lead down to the Sunken Garden, where a marvel of parterre beds of boxwood borders filled with pink begonias, blue ageratum, beautiful Japanese maple trees and other stunning trees and shrubs grow. The history of this garden begins in 1907 when the architect of the Berwind family mansion, Horace Trumbauer, began working with gardener Bruce Butterton on the Sunken Garden. The marble pavilions were also designed by Trumbauer, inspired by the French Pavilion in the gardens of the Petit Trianon at Versailles. “French landscape designer Jacques Greber advised on the design of the

parterre beds, creating a colorful display at either end of the garden with blue ageratum against a backdrop of red Japanese maples, hinoki cypress and American spruce,” says Coxe. “Fountains, rows of clipped arborvitae and hedges of ivy complete this classical scheme combining water, greenery and stone.” During the 1990s, the Preservation Society put forth $2.1 million to restore the garden, completing the restoration just in time for The Elms Centennial in 2001. The Elms is an official historic property as well as a National Historic Landmark. The restoration of The Elms Sunken Garden won a Preservation Merit Award from Preserve Rhode Island, and a Historic Preservation Project Award from the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission. The Preservation Society has a staff of gardeners and landscapers who maintain the 88 acres of gardens and grounds at all of its historic Newport properties. Admission to the grounds and gardens is included in a ticket to tour The Elms, and visitors are always encouraged to stroll down to the back of the 10-acre property and allow both the mind and the green thumb to boggle. 367 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. 847-1000.

Smith’s Castle

A Walk through the Past Smith’s Castle is a glimpse into Rhode Island’s history

Standing robustly before Mill Cove in North Kingstown, Smith’s Castle is a historic gem. The product of recent restoration and preservation efforts, the castle maintains both an 18th Century Garden and a Dye Garden. In 1948, a group of locals concerned about the deterioration of the castle and in turn its historical significance formed the Cocumscussoc Association. The association then purchased the property in order to preserve and assure its use for public education. The mission of Smith’s Castle is to educate on the history of Rhode Island’s development through three eras of history: Native American, early colonial days and plantation era. This mission is made tangible in the castle’s 18th Century Garden, planted in 1953. Although the garden is not a restoration of the property’s original garden, it is a representation of a typical garden from that era. Landscape architect Irmgard Graham, as well as the South County Garden Club performed meticulous research on 18th century gardens, ultimately designing and planting a garden analogous to that of a wealthy 18th century

family. Volunteer gardeners maintain the plot. The Dye Garden is yet another piece of the past restored for contemporary enjoyment and education. The garden grows 12 examples of common New England plants, which yield dyes in a variety of colors. A numbered guide leads visitors through the patch, and those who drop in to the North Chamber can view the color wheel of dye samples. Tansy, sunflower, marigold, yarrow, onions, hibiscus and rudbeckia are some of the dozen plants destined to have their colors harvested. Ann Casey is the Project Leader for Smith’s Castle. “We get great satisfaction in bringing this garden back to its former beauty,” says Casey. “It had been badly neglected before we began to restore it in 2010. The tranquility and peacefulness of the site, and the sense of 400 years of RI history associated with it makes the task of working in the garden a very special one.” The property will hold its Fourth Annual Smith’s Castle Open Golf Tournament on September 15. 55 Richard Smith Drive, North Kingstown. 294-3521.

Edible Art Casey Farm’s green space tastes delicious On a Saturday morning in the summertime, you’ll find no grocery store produce aisle so picturesque as the Coastal Growers’ Market at Casey Farm. The mid-18th century homestead overlooks Narragansett Bay, surrounded by stone walls and historic barns. It is one of the oldest working farms in the country. With more than 300 acres of property, stretching from the Bay to Pettaquamscutt River, Casey Farm is perhaps one of the most lovely places to see food grow in the state. Lindie Markovich has been the Interim Farm Manager for Casey Farm since April. “I love doing what I do and being able to grow food for our local community; I love being part of the community in this way,” she says. Casey Farm is owned by Historic New England, a non-profit, which allows it to do more than other farms its size. The community also gives the farm a great deal of support, especially through families who subscribe to the farm’s Community Supported Agriculture program, sending locals home with a share of fresh, organically grown vegetables, herbs and flowers. Saturdays May through October, the farm

also welcomes the Coastal Grower’s Market, running 8:30am-12:30pm. The market offers greater variety, featuring products from other local farms such as meat, seafood, fruits and artisan goods. Casey Farm will also be holding an annual Tomato Day on Saturday, August 23 from 9am-noon. Taste and compare a variety of heirloom and red tomatoes, all grown in local Rhode Island farms. There will also be music, coffee and baked goods, as well as plenty of tomatoes to purchase and take home. The event is free to the public. Summer Fun Days for kids also run through the month of August, one day special programs that allow kids of different age brackets to enjoy both the wholesome fun and the science behind farm life. Pioneer Farmers, Pirate Adventures, Farm Theatrics and Crazy Cool Hose-Down are a few of this months’s experiences. For more information on Casey Farm’s Summer Fun Days, visit www.historicnewengland.org. Casey Farm is open through October 15. 2325 Boston Neck Road, Saunderstown. 2951030.

COMPREHENSIVE CARE MANAGEMENT

After a day spent frolicking on the beach or shopping and strolling through Narragansett, a hearty meal is in order. Luckily, mere blocks from Narragansett Pier is PJ’s Pub, a calm, cool pub-style space offering a huge variety of Mediterranean-influenced cuisine. Take a minute to mull over their extensive menu... if you’re in the mood for something substantial or are craving a lighter dish, PJ’s has just the thing to suit your appetite. For fare straight from the sea, PJ’s offers a variety of seafood specialties including Salmon Joanne, blackened or grilled salmon with a lemon cucumber dill sauce; Sole Narragansett, a sole fillet with housemade seafood stuffing and Newburg sauce; and Citrus Scallops, pan-seared and finished with an orange-ginger reduction. They also offer a special catch of the day, and, as is custom with any near-the-ocean eatery, a Fisherman’s Platter featuring Chef’s Choice seafood fried to perfection. PJ’s also offers staples like steak, lasagna, multiple types of “Parmesan Plates,” stuffed eggplant, and a delicious variety of pasta dishes. Try the Greek-style Pasta, with baby spinach, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, tomatoes and mushrooms

done with a garlic butter white wine sauce and finished with feta and mozzarella. For a snackier bite, enjoy appetizers like mussels, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers and wings, and the now-official Rhode Island state app, calamari (although theirs is Greek-style, not RI traditional, but you should try it anyway). Salads (Greek, Cobb, Ceasar, Melanzane, Antipasto) and soups are also available. Add salmon, shrimp or chicken to any salad for an extra protein boost. On the “pubbier” side, PJ’s offers up a delectable selection of burgers and sandwiches, like the Gansett Burger (with grilled onions, barbecue sauce, bacon and swiss) and beef or chicken gyros. They also serve calzones and pizzas like the Shrimp Scampi pizza, which is a garlic buttered crust topped with shrimp, onions, roasted garlic and a cheese blend, finished with oregano and parsley. Whether you are looking for a spot to eat solo after a day of seaswimming, or for a place to party and dine with friends, PJ’s is the spot to be. Plus, their hours are perfect for diners who enjoy grabbing some late-night grub.

A summer getaway in Green Hill

Against the Grain

Photography: Grace Lentini

A New York couple makes a splash with a new arts and crafts style home in South Kingstown Nestled on a small expanse in South Kingstown, Green Hill might be considered one of Rhode Island’s lesser known gems. But Denise and Joe Pierce of Dutchess County, New York, knew that was exactly where they wanted to build their second home, as the area offers tranquil living in a stunning coastal setting. “We wanted a place that was quiet but also close to everything,” explains Joe. When a plot of land became available within the coveted enclave, the Pierces jumped at the chance to become part of this community and were anxious to break ground. To say they were chomping at the bit to get started is an understatement. “Right after we purchased the land, we started interviewing architects and builders,” says Joe. “Actually, we started

interviewing before we even closed on the lot!” The two admit they were already focusing on flooring, appliances and fixtures that appealed to them before even signing the dotted line. Although the couple had never built a home from the ground up before, the process was exciting rather than intimidating. Denise’s brother-in-law, who is in the construction business back in New York, was also willing to assist as an unofficial advisor, which reassured the Pierces. The couple decided on and arts and crafts architectural design, which they describe as a happy medium between their distinct tastes. “She is more contemporary; I’m more classic,” describes Joe. “We could agree on arts and crafts.” Denise says that in films and on television, she was always attracted to the style, which is also known

as American Craftsman. Arts and crafts is a departure from the popular simple, cedar shingle cottage-style homes often found on Rhode Island’s coast, and architectural designer Zandra Rhodes was the person to make their vision a reality. “She’s a designer and not an architect, so we weren’t sure at first,” concedes Denise, “but this [style] is her specialty.” “I love this style,” admits Zandra. “The Pierces’ [home] is what I would call a shingle style craftsman bungalow. I brought in some timber frame elements and post and beam elements in the porch. It has some heavy beams which is typical. There is a lot of what I would call ‘craftsman style’ there; the interior finishes and the way the house is laid out; the trim work and bead board in different places.” Not only is arts and crafts style design

her forte, but apparently so is listening to potential clients. Armed with just a conversation with the Pierces explaining their wants and needs along with the size of their land parcel, Zandra returned to the couple with a design that was spot on. “We gave her the basics – the size, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and her first draft hit it at 95%,” says Joe. The couple says they started driving around neighborhoods to also get a good feel of how their vision fit within the landscape. They found a home in South County that they really admired, so they pulled over to the side of the road and Joe began snapping pictures. “Then a man came out of the house, we started talking, and he told me about Steve Lawrence,” he says. The Pierces soon took up the man’s advice and gave August 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Steve a call. The experienced Narragansett-based builder known for custom homes and renovations met with the couple. Soon, the Pierces’ dream team was sealed. “Steve said he was really excited about building a home in this style,” recalls Denise. “It’s a cool spot,” says Steve of the Green Hill area. “It’s not a big house but it shows from the outside as big home with multiple decks and porches, which gives it depth and detail, as do the pillars and posts at the entry. There’s a lot of curb appeal.” One of the features both Joe and Denise had their heart set on was a spacious spa-like master bath complete with an extra deep, standalone tub, a rainshower and marble floors. The completed space was

even better than the two imagined, and it remains one of their favorite rooms in the home. For Joe, having a lot of livable outdoor space was also essential – after all, one would be remiss not to revel in those saltwater breezes, so the multiple multilevel porches, some screened in and some open air, top the list of areas he savors the most. Denise’s favorite space is the deck off the master bedroom. Nearby, a newly designed lounge area with plush, welcoming chairs has also become a favorite nook. Why, you ask? Because “no one follows you up there,” laughs Denise. “I know better,” adds Joe. Though Green Hill and nearby Matunuck Beach are both populated with many second or summer homes,

the Pierces knew their home would be much more than just a weekend escape. Since its completion in 2013, the couple and their family stay for everything from three-day weekends to extended lengths of time. “We like this neighborhood; it’s like everyone is on vacation here,” laughs Denise. With a community park, private beach club, easy waterfront access, sandy beaches and bucolic areas including Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge nearby, one could say this coastal South Kingstown enclave celebrates the best of both worlds.

Beauty from the Earth Marlene Wojcik on skincare from the ground up

Photography: Ron Cowie

Are your products all natural and organic? I use the finest ingredients, including organic oils and herbs from my garden. Like any good recipe you must have the best to produce something wonderful. Customers are more aware these days of what they put on their skin and are starting to change over to a more natural approach. I’m a sun worshipper in the summer. What would you recommend to soothe my skin after the beach? Use a lavender spritzer, which helps with sunburn. I spritz my face and body with rose toner and keep it in the refrigerator. What’s a good skincare regimen for the hot, sticky August weather? Keep your face and body hydrated. Use a skin toner and daily cleanser. Go lighter on the face cream; sometimes I

Summer…

After working as a social worker for many years, Carolina’s Marlene Wojcik wanted a change. She enrolled in a home-study herbalism program, practicing with the herbs from her own garden. That was in 1993. Today, her Earth Essence Herbals skincare line is available all over South County. Here, she dishes on naturally beautiful summer skin and smelling your way to relaxation. What inspired Earth Essence Herbals? Once I decided to explore my interest in learning about plants and their uses, I enrolled in a home studies program on herbalism and began making tinctures and infusions from plants in my herb garden. My collection of herbal books grew, and so did classes on aromatherapy, flower essences and healing with plants. I found so many great recipes for making creams, and began the process of formulating my own. Through trial and error I developed a natural skin care line free of chemicals and fillers with names I cannot pronounce.

skip it altogether. On those lazy days of summer there is nothing more refreshing than peppermint tea – just infuse some peppermint leaves in water and make a sun tea. Let’s talk aromatherapy. Can smells really affect my mood? I use a variety of essential oils for the skin and scents for the body. The lighter floral scents of lavender and rose, orange and grapefruit have a clean fragrance and make you feel more relaxed. More stimulating oils such as rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint and clary sage wake up the senses and make you feel more awake. Do you have any quick fixes for me if I’m having a particularly stressful moment at work? For stressful moments at work – take a few deep breathes, dab on some lavender essential oil and make yourself a cup of herbal tea.

What’s your favorite product from your line? Walk me through your daily regiment of your products. My favorite product from my line is the Wonder Face Cream. It was the first cream I made and continues to be the top seller. A daily regiment for me is to use cleansing grains to stimulate and clean the face which contain ground oats, white clay, ground almonds, roses and lavender and poppy seeds. After this I use the Rose Skin Toner to close and tone the pores and apply the face cream. Once a month I’ll use the clay mask. Find Earth Essence Herbals at farmer’s markets all season long: Wednesdays in Newport, Fridays in East Greenwich, and Saturdays in Barrington, Bristol and Kingston.

Extraordinary home consignments in Westerly

SO RHODE ISLAND | August 2014

beaches surrounding us, we Rhode Islanders are pretty spoiled with picture-perfect settings and generous ocean breezes. But as wonderful as that can be, we also know that we can also expect plenty of stifling, humid days that not even the most pleasant gust of heavenly beach air can touch. During one of these steamy, humid stretches I made my way to the beautiful area of downtown Westerly and found some relief from the elements when I walked through the doors of Coastal Consignments of Westerly. The color palette of vibrant teal and sun-kissed sandy-beige was welcoming and refreshing. I immediately felt as though I were a guest in a dear aunt’s seaside cottage – one filled with treasures evoking cool, coastal charm. I was greeted warmly by the store’s owner, Suzanne Martell. As I began to poke around this expansive store, I couldn’t help but notice how much attention to detail Suzanne paid to her customer’s desires. Having opened for business in October, Coastal Consignments is definitely not your mother’s antique/consignment store. Yes, it’s definitely laced with a nostalgic appeal offering classic pieces like solid hope chests and sturdy oak dressers, but the atmosphere is bright and airy and the entire inventory is thoughtfully organized and arranged to make shopping easy yet fun. As a gal whose just come off an entire tropical home makeover (if I can’t get to the Caribbean every year, I’ll bring the islands to me!) I was tickled to find so many beachy items that were fresh, updated and my favorite – affordable. Everything from handpainted accent tables to crisp, white wicker chairs were available throughout this roomy store with decorative accessories, paintings, candles and wall art – most with a nautical flair just waiting to be discovered. Suzanne has long been passionate about great home and furniture finds and credits one of her childhood friend’s mother for introducing her to the delightful treasure hunts that were uncovered nearly every Saturday morning when they would go flea marketing and to yard sales. “My friend’s mother had a real eye for finding great

Get beachy chic in Westerly

stuff and taught me what to look for with certain brand names, quality and just how to put a room together from start to finish with other people’s gently-used belongings,” shares an exuberant Suzanne. Born and raised in the Westerly area, she is proud to open her own business in the heart of her hometown and is also pleased to make it a family affair with her cousin, Michelle Russell, as her bubbly assistant – a familiar face to the regulars who stop by on a weekly basis to check out the new merchandise that arrives almost daily. Coastal Consignments caters to home décor so you won’t find clothing, baby items, china, collectible glassware or electronics. Suzanne explains that the store is a consignment store with a twist – a boutique-like setting featuring upscale classic, contemporary, antique and unique décor and furnishings for the home. They also feature artesian jewelry, homemade soaps and handcrafted coastal art. “The continuous introduction of new items inspires our clients’ decorating senses and instills a desire to return and see what’s new,” she adds. As an avid reader I totally fell in love with their quaint book nook where I found classics, chick-lit beach bag must-haves and even scrumptious cookbooks. A sweet, hand-painted kitchenette set catches my eye along

with some over-sized pottery-style serving dishes – perfect for my gang of eight kids. The spacious layout of the store is perfect for strollers and they are very family-friendly, so if you want to head out to do some shopping for your home you can definitely bring the kids along. Parking is also plentiful, adding to the convenience of your Coastal experience. New consignors are always welcome, and Suzanne notes that they even have an eBay account. In addition to their well-stocked in-store inventory, Coastal Consignments also has an updated website that features some of their popular pieces along with other helpful information for both customers and consignors. And for folks that can’t find what they’re looking for, they’d be happy to put your requests on their popular wish list. With August here, it’s the perfect time to sneak away from a day at the beach and check out some coastal inspiration for your home or rental property.

The great writer Jorge Luis Borges once said, “I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library.” Well, I’ve seen paradise, and there aren’t any books. There are, however, spa pedicure chairs, hard to find makeup brands and Champagne bubbles aplenty. Oh, by the way? Paradise is in Warwick. I know, right? As much as I was incredibly excited to try Retail Therapy Beauty Bar – which combines the elements of a hair and nail salon, spa, boutique and café – my excitement was tempered by the fact that I was going to have to drive down Route 2 to get there, and once I did, I’d be in Warwick, and how pampered can you possibly feel across from PetSmart? It turns out, very pampered. From the minute I walked inside, all the buzz outside was gone, and I was in heaven. Owner Anita Kiernan greeted me and lead me through the surprisingly expansive beauty boutique, past the blowout bar, to the nail area. Where Mimi, would be giving me a Champagne manicure and pedicure. Their levels of service are designated by beverages: espresso and wine spritzer are quick fixes, Chardonnay is the regular mani or pedi and Champagne is the deluxe spa version. While I was disappointed that there would be no bubbly used on my toes, that disappointment quickly disappeared when Anita offered me some in an actual glass. I opted for Pinot Grigio and sat back to soak in as much relaxation as possible. As Mimi did her work (which was very good, probably the best pedicure I’ve ever had, which included a sugar scrub and a foot mask), Anita brought me

out a plate of snacks – like goat cheese crostini with lemon and chive, and mozzarella caprese skewers – and told me a little about Retail Therapy. “This is where I would want to go with my girlfriends,” she explained. The fact that the beauty bar offers complete spa services, cosmedical procedures, hair and nail services, a makeup bar, a place to shop and a place to sit and enjoy a cocktail and a snack means that it’s perfect for big groups, without the inevitable lag that comes when friends go for beauty services together. Think birthday or bachelorette party. Hell, think Thursday night, when there are food and drink specials for Ladies Night. After my Champagne pedi, I got a Champagne gel mani (turquoise, with a hot pink and glitter accent nail, perfect for lounging poolside). Then, Anita brought me to her makeup chair and showed me some of their exclusive lines, like Inglot from Poland and Gorgeous Cosmetics from Australia, and her own line of Retail Therapy makeup, which has an amazing high def foundation. I left looking and feeling great, and with an Inglot bronzer that I’ve used every single day since then. The next time I need a break from my errands, I’m definitely stopping by for a little dose of paradise.

So Delicious

Southern Flavors Move Up North Fried Chicken and Waffles in East Greenwich

Craving some southern comfort food? Lucky for you, you don’t have venture down south to get your fill of good old southern cooking – just to Main Street in East Greenwich. Read our review of Dante’s Kitchen on the next page. August 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

So Delicious | Review

By Stacey Place

A Taste of the South Dante’s Kitchen brings southern cuisine to East Greenwich Here in southern Rhode Island, there aren’t many places where

Cajun Rib Eye

walls as well as some exposed brick. Since the restaurant is BYOB (which I love), we brought a six-pack of Sierra Nevada Summerfest. Our waitress offered to bring us frosted glasses for our beer but sheepishly added that there would be an additional charge. Although we thought frosted glasses

sounded good, we decided not to spend $2.50 for that privilege. As we were perusing the menu, we sampled the house corn bread, and it was very good – moist with enough jalapeños to wake up your taste buds. To start, my friends and I ordered three appetizers to share. Our favorite

was the Fried Green Tomato Tower ($8). The cornmeal-encrusted tomatoes were layered with bacon and goat cheese. The goat cheese perfectly complemented the crisp, fried, tart tomatoes and the bacon just added to the goodness. We also enjoyed the Crispy Oysters ($8) with pickled onions and Cajun aioli. The five oysters were on the small side, but they were sweet and perfectly fried. I’m a sucker for pickled onions (really pickled anything), so they made the dish for me. The Biscuits and Gravy ($7) were stickto-your-ribs good. The biscuits were buttery and flaky, soaking in all of the savory, rich gravy. The entrées at Dante’s Kitchen are very reasonably priced. Everything is less than $20, except for the Cajun Rib Eye ($27). I was trying to save room for dessert, so I opted for something light and chose the Blackened Salmon ($19). The salmon was really good, with just enough seasoning to give it a bit of a kick, but not so much as to overwhelm the delicate flavor of the fish. It was topped with a peach salsa, which had just the right amount of heat. My entrée was served with what was described as a “zucchini fritter” but

you can find good down-home southern cooking. There are plenty of pizza places, Chinese restaurants, burger pubs and seafood spots, but if you’re looking for fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, grits, jambalaya or barbecue, you’re generally out of luck. Dante’s Kitchen on Main Street in East Greenwich hopes to change that by bringing you a taste of the South. Dante’s Kitchen opened just about a year ago. Owner Lisa Altieri fell in love with southern food while travelling the country as a transportation logistical manager for large scale conventions. She opened Dante’s Kitchen to share her love of southern food with her customers. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch Tuesday-Sunday and dinner Wednesday-Saturday. Last year, she hired Executive Chef Jason Nappa and he’s been preparing the restaurant’s hearty food ever since. In mid-June, Dante’s Kitchen updated their menu, keeping some favorites but also adding a few new items. As usual, Main Street was bustling on the Saturday night we visited Dante’s Kitchen, so we were glad we had a reservation. The restaurant is small and cozy with rustic hardwood floors, dark wood paneling and warm colors on the

was more the consistency of a pancake. My friends ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles ($13), and the Seared Shrimp ($19) and were both very happy with their choices. The Fried Chicken and Waffles were made with fried chicken tenders instead of bone-in chicken pieces. My friend liked it better and said the chicken tenders made it “less overwhelming” and kept the meat moist, but there was definitely more waffle than chicken. The Seared Shrimp was very well prepared. The shrimp were drizzled with a honey/lemon vinaigrette, which my friend said was “tangy, citrusy and light.” The shrimp were served atop a bed of tasty dirty rice, which was flavored with sausage rather than the traditional giblets or liver. At Dante’s Kitchen, all the desserts are made in-house. After everything we ate, we were pretty full, but the desserts sounded too good to pass up, so we decided to try a couple. I ordered the Jack Daniels Chocolate Pecan Pie ($7) with a scoop of house

made vanilla bean ice cream. The pie was warm, ooey, gooey and chocolatey and worth every calorie. Our congenial waitress suggested the addition of ice cream, and she was right because the ice cream gave it an added boost. My friends split the Peach Cobbler ($6), and the portion would have fed a family of four, so there were plenty of leftovers to take home in our empty beer cooler. We left stuffed to the gills and in need of a long walk. Dante’s Kitchen is reasonably priced, offers good food and charming service. Our waitress was a character, and we enjoyed talking to her. I will definitely be back when I need to satisfy my comfort food craving. Now, does anyone know where I can get some good barbecue?

Modern Diner Food Jim Crosby’s fresh approach to the classics In the restaurant industry there are newbies and lifers. Chef and restaurateur Jim Crosby is decidedly a lifer, snagging his first gig before he could even drive a car. He spent twentysome years in the trenches, and then transitioned from employee to owner with a handful of homey spots to his name. Rather than reinvent the wheel, Crosby sticks with time-tested diner favorites like all-day breakfast platters – but he also brings a modern emphasis on fresh ingredients to the table. Earlier this year he parlayed his crowdpleasing formula into Crosby’s Cafe in East Greenwich, where he’s already built a following with updated family fare served morning, noon and night.

Chef Jim Crosby of Crosby’s Cafe

How did you get your start in the restaurant world? I’m 48 now, and I got my start washing dishes when I was 15, so you do the math! [Laughs] It was at my aunt’s and uncle’s restaurant in Warwick. They did a lot of local seafood, steaks and chops. Things everybody loves. After that, I never really left the business. I’m sort of carrying the torch, you know? I still do a lot of seafood – baked scrod, chowder – and things like a good veal chop on my menu, along with the allday breakfast. How would you describe your cooking style? Just honest food. I’m not a flashy kind of chef. I want to give people what they want – lots of choices, good prices, things they might have grown up with but made a little better. We make almost everything in-house, and I’ve worked on most of the recipes for a lot of years to get them right. A lot of restaurants use jars of roasted peppers for example, to save time and money, but those don’t work well in recipes. They taste soggy. So we roast all of our peppers in the restaurant, and you can really tell the difference in the food. What should I try when I come to Crosby’s Cafe? Our chicken noodle soup. We make it from scratch, starting with a whole chicken. That way you get a great stock without pre-made chicken broth, which can taste too salty or artificial. Everyone tells

me that it tastes like their grandmother’s soup, which is the best compliment. I love that. And you should definitely get the corned beef hash breakfast. It’s made with real corned beef, a lot of it, and it comes with a couple of eggs, crispy homefries and toast. It’s by far one of our most popular dishes. Practically everyone orders it. It’s totally a different animal than the mushy, greasy versions that a lot of diners serve, made out of a can. You opened Crosby’s in a location long occupied by another restaurant, the Village Cafe. What did you hope to bring to the area? I’ve always liked East Greenwich. It’s kind of like a miniature Newport. But for a time there were only high-end restaurants and low-end restaurants there, and not really anything in-between the two. I wanted to do something family-friendly at a reasonable price. I also wanted to give people a big range on the menu: If a husband wants hash and eggs and his wife wants a nice salmon dinner, they can have it here! What were some of your challenges? There was already good traffic in the area, so that wasn’t an issue. We focused on keeping the regulars while also attracting new customers. It can be hard to change a menu without turning off people who’ve been coming for years. We kept price-points similar to the previous restaurant’s,

and good food goes a long way. We enhanced some of the old recipes – made them more modern – without changing them completely. Basically we just try to keep everyone happy, to make this a place where they want to spend time, bring their families and come back again and again. What does “modern” diner food mean to you? Well, familiar dishes, but made fresher. There should be more robust flavors, better execution. A lot of chefs talk about “farm to table” nowadays – and it’s not like we’re going out to the farm to pick out our eggs here, but we make a real effort to use fresh products and make things from scratch. That’s important to me. After all your years in the business, what keeps you excited to go to work everyday? When I look out at a dining room and it’s full of people, talking and enjoying their food. And when people come back to eat with us two and three times a week. A restaurant becomes sort of like its own community. There’s nothing more gratifying than that.

Although school is out for the summer, you might be interested in taking the newest and most decidedly adult bus ride to hit South County. The Rhode Island Brew Bus has started a tour through Rhode Island’s latest craft brew craze. The tours are offered every weekend and cover the entire state. Every tour is unique – visiting different breweries, sometimes including food and always including lots of fun. The Rhode Island Brew Bus’s founder, Bill Nangle, has a passion for craft beer. He’s not just a connoisseur; he also brews his own at home. After graduating from URI with a degree in Entrepreneurial Management, he was inspired by a brew bus business he came upon in Maine. Looking at the Rhode Island craft brew scene, he saw how a similar business could thrive here. It was the perfect combination of being able to start a promising business related to something he loves. Bill offers tours all over the state but has plans for a specific southern Rhode Island tour. The tours include visits to Newport Storm, Grey Sail Brewing, Whaler’s Brewing Company, Proclamation Ale Company, Tilted Barn Brewery, Coddington Brewing Company, Sons of Liberty Spirits (whiskey and vodka), Greenvale Vineyards (wine), Pour

Judgement Pub and the Malted Barley. Every tour will include three stops, and the website offers all the essential details for each tour. The tours range in price from $67-$77 plus tax (depending on the stops and whether food is included). They include tours, tastings, transportation, giveaways, snacks/ water on the bus and a pint glass (or two) to take home. Drinking alcoholic beverages is not permitted on the bus, but there will be contests and educational experiences. All tour participants must be at least 21 years of age, and IDs will be checked before boarding. Private tours can also be arranged by e-mailing Bill at bill@therhodeislandbrewbus.com. 585-0303, www. therhodeislandbrewbus.com. Westerly Couple Brings Flavors of Brazil to Rhode Island This summer, Brazil was at the center of the world’s attention as it hosted the World Cup. Rhode Islanders wanting to discover a taste of Brazil without leaving the state should seek out the Lady Copacabana food truck. For the past year, the Westerly-based truck has been serving up Brazilian specialties at festivals and fairs, and on the streets of Providence. Talita Luna-Stackpole was born and

raised in Marilia, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. She learned how to make rissoles (pronounced his ‘o’ lees) from her mother’s neighbor. In Brazil, they are known as “fried dough,” but they are more akin to fried ravioli or empanadas. Talita makes hers with a variety of fillings including buffalo mac ‘n’ cheese, eggplant, traditional hearts of palm and chicken bacon alfredo. Her husband, Chris, would bring the rissoles to his job at the Mohegan Sun, and people loved them so much, they started requesting orders. When the couple moved to Rhode Island, Chris cashed in his 401K and used the money to build a food truck. Talita loves being her own boss and the freedom of the truck allows her to visit her family in Brazil as often as she likes. In addition to the rissoles, the Lady Copacabana also churns out other Brazilian specialty foods such as bolinha de queijos, which are fried soft balls of dough filled with cheese and oregano. Also popular on the truck is a Brazilian candy known as a brigadeiro (a cross between fudge and a truffle). You can find the whereabouts of the Lady Copacabana by following her on Twitter @copacabanalady. 4 Seaview Avenue, Westerly, 400-5839, www.ladycopacabana.com

Pavilion Steak House Pavilion Steak House & Banquets is a classic restaurant and banquet hall nestled in scenic Ashaway. This carnivore’s paradise is home to in-house cured meats, like their coffee-crusted bacon, and premium steak, poultry and pork cuts. Pavilion offers customized butters, spices and sauces to complement each dish, and is no stranger to imported Atlantic and Pacific catches of fresh seafood. While the pièce de résistance of any classic steakhouse is their dinner

selection of sirloins and rib eyes, this restaurant features a specialty burger and sandwich menu that rivals its even its own steaks. The restaurant also doubles as a destination for wedding parties and banquets. Pavilion offers an outdoor patio and its own tent for outdoor occasions. The RI International Film Festival returns Now in its 18th year, the Rhode Island International Film Festival is a well-established cornerstone of the growing film scene in the Ocean State. But as its name implies, the breadth — and importance — of the festival reaches far beyond Little Rhody’s boundaries. Although Flickers (the organization responsible for RIIFF) founder and RIIFF director George Marshall estimates that RIIFF attracts upwards of 15,000 viewers over the course of the annual festival, what many of those attendees might not realize is that, in addition to being a highly competitive platform for filmmakers to showcase their work to audience members both inside and outside their industry, RIIFF is a qualifying event for the Academy Awards. “We’ve had that designation since 2002,” George explains, “meaning we can nominate films for Oscar consideration in the short film and documentary short categories. We’re the only festival in New England [that serves as a qualifying event].” While the quality of the films that the festival has featured has always been high, George says that this designation has been crucial in helping the festival to ramp things up. “We’re no longer a juvenile organization. We’re maturing,” he says, adding that of the films that RIIFF presented for the Academy’s consideration, there have been 33 nominations and seven wins. This is not surprising, considering the rigorous vetting process that takes place every year. At the time of this writing, George and company have just closed the call for entries, receiving a record 5,400+ submissions, all told, for no more than 210 spots, hailing from as close as Providence and as far as Europe. “The submissions we receive range from student work all the way up to pro,” says George. “We’ve had folks who started out showing with us who are now in the industry. It’s been amazing to see their journey from the time they left undergrad or grad school. Our festival has been a stepping stone. This is part of our mission: we’re about discovery.” Keeping a finger on the pulse of fresh talent is at the center of what the festival is all about. In fact, it has extended its reach to help facilitate and encourage the filmmakers of tomorrow, too.

Although it doesn’t take place during the festival, the RIIFF has for 16 years held the KidsEye Summer Filmmaking Camp, a weeklong intensive program for children ages eight to 17. George says that advances in technology, which have ultimately made the field of filmmaking in general more democratic and less reliant on major studios, have trickled down to the future Spielbergs and Lucases among us. “We’ve got kids that at eight years old coming in with not only knowledge of how to operate cameras, but bringing in demo reels,” says George. It’s that infectious excitement, and the growing accessibility of DIY tools and alternative funding resources, that have no doubt helped independent film gain traction with widespread audiences. “When we first started independent films, it was like you were speaking a foreign language. Years ago the people who attended independent films were a very elite group of educated folks. But now the demographics have changed. More people are now open to discovery,” says George. “People enjoy coming and finding something they can’t see anywhere else.” Visitors to this year’s festival won’t be disappointed. The films on view are playing throughout the state at various locations, and run the gamut of topics and genres. Although some of the topics are for more mature audiences, there is abundant family-friendly fare, too. First time directors with as-yetunknown actors are screened alongside movies like the world premiere of Caserta Palace Dream by V for

Vendetta director James McTeigue, a 20-minute feature starring Richard Dreyfus. In addition to the something-for-everybody smorgasbord offered throughout the festival’s run, specialty programming and panels will be available for those who are interested. Lectures and forums, including the Rhode Island Film Forum featuring state film office director Steven Feinberg, round out the festival’s programming and present valuable networking and educational opportunities. Although the bulk of the festival does take place in locations around the city capital, the event is truly a statewide collaboration, and those of us down south won’t be disappointed. Screenings are set to be held at the Jamestown Arts Center on 18 Valley St. in Jamestown throughout the festival, and Newport residents are offered a special reduced rate pass. It boggles the mind to think about how much the festival manages to pack into a week. My advice is to get prepared and make a list of what you’d like to see by visiting the festival’s website, bringing with you an open mind and a healthy appetite for popcorn, of course.

Simple Designs, Beautiful Glass Lynne Lovely creates works of art in Wakefield It’s not a stretch

to say that stained-glass artist Lynne Lovely lives in her studio: asked how many hours a week she works, she replies with a straigh face, “All of them.” Not only does Lynne spend countless hours in her spacious basement workspace, but the tools, materials and products of her craft are everywhere you look in her Wakefield home. A stairwell is lined with antique electrical insulators, old bottles are tucked into kitchen shelves, basins in the garden are filled with scraps of sea glass, and of course the sunny windows are hung with examples of the artist’s own uniquely threedimensional work. Lynne’s stained-glass creations frequently incorporate repurposed materials like antique medicine bottles, bullseye glass and even bits and pieces of old glassware milled and rounded over decades spent in the sea. Nautical themes dominate – boats, mermaids, shells and fish dangling from lures bought at the local Benny’s (a counterpoint is found in another panel featuring a fish with no mouth, “so it can’t be caught,” says Lynne). With more than 4,000 varieties of stained glass available, and the local beaches spitting up new sea glass every day, Lynne has a nearly endless supply of materials and ideas to work with, although her mermaid panels and stainedglass star window hangings are popular pieces that she must keep well stocked. “That’s why I can never do anything new,” she jokes. Lynne never really aspired to art. She went to school at URI as a textiles major and only becoming interested in stained glass after taking a class in Atlanta while she was working as a buyer for a clothing company. She recognized the need for a

Lynne Lovely and daughter Amy at their home studio

lifestyle change when her son, Tim, now 25, was born and got licensed as a home daycare provider. But when she found herself slipping downstairs during naptime to work on glass, she realized that it was time to take a chance on turning her hobby into a profession. It’s not glamorous work, in fact, Lynne describes it as dirty, time-consuming and dangerous. “I cut myself every day,” she says. But despite the frequent nicks, Lynne finds joy in the craft, and her life is hardly solitary: there are frequent visits by the neighbors, her son, Tim, the companionship of the family’s many dogs and the opportunity to teach her craft to her daughter, Amy, 21. “She learns from me, and when she needs money she comes by and makes some stuff,” Lynne says with a laugh, adding that Amy is her invaluable partner at art shows and has established an Etsy site of her own online. Stained glass shouldn’t be something you can only appreciate in a cathedral, so when Lynne brings her work to shows she doesn’t just display her big pieces. She makes sure to pack plenty of those

$15 stained-glass stars as well as her popular and inexpensive glass necklaces and earrings. The latter don’t make her much money – “This is a very labor-intensive process, and every piece is handmade,” she says – but they do make this timeless craftwork accessible to even the most humble buyer. Many of Lynne’s pieces can be hung in windows or are themselves fitted into repurposed window frames from old homes (and if they are weathered by the sea, all the better), but some are on a grander scale. One of the artist’s favorites is a five-foot-tall rendering of Block Island in blue and green glass that includes the island’s roads, ponds and a shard of pottery built into the matrix to mark the location of the customer’s home. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Lynne considers herself more of a technician or craftsperson than an artist – a kindred spirit to her father, an aeronautical engineering draftsman whose workbench she still uses. She enjoys the precision of scoring and cutting, and is succinct in describing her work: “Simple designs, beautiful glass.” Lovely’s work is sold at local art shows as well as Different Drummer in Wickford, Simply Natural in Narragansett, Waves of Creation in Wakefield, Watercolors on Block Island and at Aunt Carrie’s restaurant in Point Judith.

Oh My, So Much Pie If you’re looking for the perfect way to end any summer evening, look no further. Satisfy your sweet tooth with some gooey, delectable fresh fruit pies from local farms.

“Absolutely luscious,” sighed one of our staff members. This blueberry, peach and cherry pie has the perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors. The irresistibly flaky, buttery crust is to die for. We all agreed that this pie was truly special – it left us scraping our plates and begging for seconds. 2693 South County Trail, East Greenwich. 884-2066.

Sunset Farms This very berry pie was berry good indeed. Its beautiful lattice top and homemade look gave way to a thick, chunky filling that was easy to serve and simply delicious. The tart filling is chock-full of tasty berries, with the fresh raspberries particularly standing out. 505 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 788-2573.

Highland Farm’s signature humble pie was fully bursting with peaches, raspberries and blueberries. It has a charming and nostalgic appearance, like something grandma made. This light and airy pie is cased in an appealingly sugar cookie-like crust. 4235 Tower Hill Road, Wakefield. 792-8188, www.highlandfarmri.com.

Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and apples all come together to make this very unique very berry pie. Its tender crust is totally scrumptious. With a hint of cinnamon, this treat will give you a craving for the flavors of early fall, making it an excellent transition from late summer into the autumn months. 520 Matunuck Beach Road.
