The man who brought parasailing and banana boating to the Block
On a clear day on Block Island, you don’t have to be in an airplane to catch a glimpse of four states at once – New York’s Montauk Point, the shores of Connecticut, mainland Rhode Island, and Cuttyhunk in Massachusetts are all visible when you’re floating aloft on 800 feet of line attached to captain Robert (Bob) Littlefield’s winchboat.
“Everybody expects parasailing to be something that it’s not,” says Littlefield, who owns and operates Block Island Parasail for a bustling yet fleeting eight-week season every summer, launching around 40 people each day during busy weekends. “It’s not like jumping out of a plane. As you’re clipped into the chute and we start to pick up speed in the boat, you gently lift off of the deck and then you’re slowly reeled out, so you’re actually sitting still and the boat is going away from you. It’s actually kind of relaxing.”

Littlefield grew up on Block Island and used to parasail o the beach as a kid, but the invention of the winchboat, a self-contained parasailing vessel reeling passengers up into the air and safely back onto deck, was a game changer. “Back in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, it was just becoming a big thing at all the island resorts,” says Littlefield. After witnessing the phenomenon while vacationing in Hawaii in 1988, he knew he needed to introduce the craze to his home island. He didn’t waste any time in purchasing a winchboat, going before the council, and opening Block Island Parasail – which celebrates 35 years this summer.
“My business is all about families,” says Littlefield, explaining that he’s flown young kids who have come back as adults with their own children. “One lady from, maybe it was last year or the year before – the screensaver on her phone was her when she flew with her dad. She was five.” His youngest parasailer? “My nephew was six months old and he flew with my brother.” His oldest passenger was 94, and Littlefield has even made it possible for wheelchair users to take flight.
While it’s not for everyone, parasailing isn’t just for thrill seekers, either. “I actually fly a lot of people who are afraid of heights,
and it doesn’t bother them because of the fact that they’re over the water, and it really is a different perspective,” says Littlefield.
Banana boating, on the other hand –“That’s a little crazier than parasailing,” says Littlefield, who o ers the group rides towed by his 23-foot competition ski boat. “It’s kind of like white water rafting on the ocean. All it takes is one person to lean incorrectly and it will flip the whole banana over. With that kind of ride, you’re going to get wet; you’re most likely going to fall in the water.”

LAUNCH TIME
For folks looking to parasail or banana boat this summer, Block Island Parasail takes same-day reservations at Old Harbor Dock starting at 9am every morning. Late June through August is the busiest part of the season when the water temperatures are a comfortable 68 degrees, but for parasailers looking to avoid the crowds, still-warm September is the sweet spot. Parasailing is $85 per person, with tandem rides available (and triples for young children), and banana boats hold six passengers and rides are $45 per person. a parachute, safety is top priority. Despite falling in love with parasailing early on, Littlefield is never strapped into the harness himself anymore for one simple reason: “I’m the only one that’s ever captained the boat,” he says. His many years of experience and knowledge of Block Island’s fickle weather patterns allow him to make sound judgements on and o the water.
But Littlefield doesn’t miss taking to the air, and looks forward to returning to Old Harbor Dock every June. “It’s a great job because you’re making memories and you’re making peoples’ vacations.”

All the World’s a Stage A Westerly director stages family-friendly Shakespeare in Wilcox Park
“I have very deep roots here,” says The Colonial Theatre artistic director Marion Markham, “probably as far back as Shakespeare.”
The Colonial Theatre was founded in 1986 and originally had their home in what is now the Granite Theater space. Comprising mostly New York-based actors, The Colonial became a home away from home when performers returned to the East Coast from their Broadway national tours. In 2000, the company relinquished their theater space and focused on producing free plays over the summer in Wilcox Park, a stunning Victorian-era strolling park that anchors downtown Westerly.
In 2018, Markham, who had been acting with the company since its inception – she played at least 15 of Shakespeare’s ladies “and plenty of his men” at The Colonial – was asked to take the helm. “It was meant to be,” the Westerly native says.
Markham trained at the renowned National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Center in Waterford, CT. She spent her early career in New York City, amassing credits in the celebrated o -Broadway scene. But South County always beckoned her back. “I don’t know if it was growing up with the fabulous music at the Knickerbocker,” she says, noting it was where she learned to swing dance.
The Tempest, this year’s production, is the perfect choice for the coastal town. In an act of revenge, magician Prospero conjures a storm to shipwreck a king and his children. The play is considered a comedy in Shakespeare’s canon and Markham, who directs, is making it family friendly and accessible.
“The Tempest is really about how lives transform after that big storm,” she says. “There are these incredible themes of freedom and forgiveness, reconciliation and imprisonment, powerlessness and conspiracy.” There’s also a feminist bent, since she cast women to play the roles of Prospero and Ariel. “I think that that’s going to be really fun to explore.”
The play includes Shakespeare’s regular comedy tropes like mistaken identity and young romance, and features plenty of highseas hijinks. Markham is adding live music and trimmed the script so it clocks in at a breezy 90 minutes. “Order dinner from one of Westerly’s fabulous restaurants, bring your kids, bring the dog, and come sit in the park,” she
says. “It’s a wonderful night out.”
With Markham’s deep roots in NYC’s theater scene, she has access to a creative team with Broadway cred bringing high-caliber production values. Their set is a permanent fixture in Wilcox Park over the three weeks they perform.
Markham taps Rhode Island’s rich community of actors for her cast and also brings in performers from New York and Los Angeles. Housing in Westerly’s overheated real estate market during peak tourist season is costly for the strictly donation-based theater. “There’s a very supportive and generous community in Westerly helping us with this,” she says.
With big dreams for The Colonial, Markham
hopes to someday return to full seasons of year-round productions, but it’s baby steps right now, and she’s working on partnerships with local businesses to expand their summer season with readings and short programs. During the spring, the theater collaborated with Westerly High School to produce an evening of short works written by students and performed by professional actors.
“We are on a mission to bring live professional theater to this community,” she says. “There’s something very valuable to the human spirit about getting together as a community and feeling that electric energy during an event. It’s good for the body.”

The Colonial Theatre o ers a robust paid internship program that introduces students to backstage theater jobs. “You do not have to be on stage to have a sustainable career,” says Markham, who notes some of their interns have gone on to behind-the-scenes jobs on Broadway.

In “Historic Step for Rhode Island,” Gov. McKee Signs Shoreline Access Legislation into Law
The new law outlines where members of the public are allowed to be along the state’s shore
Governor Dan McKee signed shoreline access legislation into law Monday [June 24, 2023], in what’s being called a major victory for beachgoers in Rhode Island.
The new law outlines where members of the public are allowed to be along the shore, setting the boundary as up to 10 feet landward of the seaweed line. In the event there are two seaweed lines, the one closest to the water should be used, the law says. When no line is present, people should use the point where the wet sand meets dry sand, plus 10 feet.
State Rep. Terri Cortvriend sponsored the legislation in the House. She said the new law will help end confusion about where the public is allowed to be on the shore, benefiting everyone who uses Rhode Island’s shoreline.
“Their access will be protected now,” Cortvriend said. “Shoreline beachgoers, shoreline users, fishermen – they will all know where they can be. … Property owners will know, too, where people should be and where they shouldn’t be.”
Cortvriend introduced a similar bill last year after a special House commission was formed to study the issue of lateral shoreline access. That proposal passed the House but failed to make traction in the Senate. This year, the legislation passed in both chambers with overwhelming support.
Speaking shortly after hearing word of the governor’s signing, Cortvriend said, “I’d like to savor the moment for a few minutes.”
“I’m just – I’m thrilled,” she said. “I’m excited for Rhode Islanders.”
Rhode Island’s Constitution has long protected public use of the shoreline for things like seaweed gathering, walking, fishing, and leaving the beach to swim, but it doesn’t define the line where public rights end and private property rights can be enforced.
Prior to Monday, the state relied on a Rhode Island Supreme Court ruling from the 1980s that set the boundary as up to the 18.6-year mean high tide line. Beachgoers had com-
plained that the boundary was too di cult to determine and ambiguity was being taken advantage of by beachfront property owners who were denying people of their shoreline rights, going so far as to put up private property signs and higher security guards.
Mike Woods, chair of the New England Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, was among the advocates who pushed for passage of the law. On Monday, he credited the sponsors in the House and Senate, including state Sen. Mark McKenney, who had been a member of the House commission, as well as the “tremendous number of organizations and individuals – really too many to name – who came together to make this happen.”
“The fact that the General Assembly came together and reached a consensus and then took the steps to put that into law is something that really no General Assembly has been able to accomplish in 300 years,” Woods said. “To see that come together, and then the governor sign it, is a

huge and historic step for Rhode Island.”
The new law comes amid a surge in shoreline access advocacy, which took o during the pandemic, as beachgoers looked to get down to the shore and property owners stepped up e orts to keep people away from certain beach areas.
The legislation put forward this year had been opposed by coastal property owners who say the boundary outlined under the new law amounts to an illegal taking of their property without compensation.
Advocates for shoreline access say the law is not an overreach. They’re confident it will stand up to a legal challenge because, they say, it’s consistent with historical use of the shore in Rhode Island.

Art is in the Air Summer markets foster creative outlets and connection for makers and patrons alike
Art markets are a summer staple across the Ocean State, promising the thrill of an irresistible one-of-a-kind find for shoppers as well as providing an outlet for creatives to network, learn from their community, and grow their reach. Whether vending or visiting one of the many regularly appearing events across Rhode Island this season, Field of Artisans founder Katrina Momenee advises: “Ask a question!” It could spark a conversation that inspires someone on either side of the table.
MAKING SPACE
Field of Artisans started as a weekly summer market at South Kingstown’s Matunuck Beach. “South County is the heart of our organization,” Momenee says. “The beach is blissful, and the best part is that vendors can jump in the ocean at the end of the market.”
An artist herself, Momenee founded Field of Artisans in 2015 when she returned home to
Rhode Island after a brief stint in New York. She sold pieces from her own line of accessories at New York City markets, but quickly realized the same type of selling opportunities weren’t available to artists in Rhode Island. “There were big markets,” Momenee said, “but not a consistent weekly thing for artists looking for exposure.”
But as vendors began to turn their creative practice into full-time careers, the market grew to match their needs. “Artists need more than a summer or weekend platform, so we added weekday dates to our schedule and pop up year-round,” Momenee explains.
New venues now include breweries, the South County Museum, and the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge in Providence. Last year, the organization breathed new life into the 56-year-old General’s Market, which takes place at The General Stanton Inn in Charlestown. “That’s our only market that includes mindfully collected vintage and antique items, so it’s a
whole di erent vibe,” Momenee explains.
Katie Vacca, a Westerly-based botanical artist and founder of erba, a line of energy cleansing products, regularly vends at the General’s Market. Vacca says she’s particularly impressed by the way Momenee curates each market to match the energy of its venue, but the opportunity for connection is what keeps her coming back. “I’ve grown to thrive o the connections I make with customers at the art market,” she says. “It’s important that I be there to put a face to my product, but it’s also inspiring to see how my work impacts someone else’s life.”
COMMUNITY APPROACH
A relative newcomer on the art market scene is Providence-based Anti-Robot Club’s Marketplace, founded and curated by local artist and musician Spocka Summa. The art market is just one of the projects Summa runs under the platform.

“The Anti-Robot Club is not against technology,” Summa explains. “It’s against the idea of people not thinking for themselves or being present. I created a market under that platform to let people meet in person, network in person, share experiences in person, and present their artwork to the community.”
Anti-Robot Club’s Marketplace has a community-centered philosophy that less-seasoned vendors find welcoming. “I try to keep [the curation] organic and not too juried,” Summa says. “Everybody has to start somewhere.” For many artists, Anti-Robot Club’s Marketplace serves as that somewhere. Summa can schedule up to 125 vendors at his market, and reserves about 40 of those spaces for newbies.
Dorian “D” Epps, founder of clothing shop Blacktop Market, says that Summa’s marketplace is the perfect spot for newcomers. “If you’re just getting onto the scene, you’ll be able to see other products, learn from other vendors, and figure out what you’re doing well and what you could be doing better,” he says. “Seeing other people’s work has helped me define my identity and figure out how to distinguish myself as a creative.”

“Marketplace vendors draw inspiration from each other,” Summa says. “To create art, you have to have a sense of vulnerability, and we put out the message that everyone has a chance. That’s what sets us apart.”
Epps says the group of vendors at the marketplace is like a family. “It happens in such a beautiful space, and so many beautiful people are there to share advice and their time and their talent. Everyone wants to see everyone else succeed. Spocka created something special in Providence. He helped my business grow and he helped me grow as a creative. And I don’t have any issue with giving him his flowers.”

CELEBRATING THE ARTS
An annual summer sendo at the beautiful waterside Crescent Park in Riverside, the Loo Arts Festival in August is run by the East Providence Arts Council, whose mission is to promote the arts across the city. “It’s the perfect place for people from all over the state to come enjoy some great music, some fine food and some fine arts,” says chairman of the council David O’Connell.
This year, in addition to food trucks and artists, there will be five performers on the main stage: Superchief Trio, Down City Band, Hit Rewind, Roger Cerisi’s All Starz, and Liquid Courage. In the gazebo, local man-abouttown Rich Watrous will host folk musicians

planning to perform at the RI Folk Festival, which happens two weeks after The Loo . “I love music and am fascinated by people who can play,” says O’Connell. “I can’t play a note.” But he can use art to bring people together. “The people on our board are artists, so we realize the value of the arts. And we understand that making art is their business, so we want to give them a nice venue to sell their work.”
Joseph Mushipi is a sculptor and painter who moved to the US from Zambia in 2021. “My first experience with The Loo was amazing,” he says. “I come from a small country where we don’t have big festivals like that.”
Mushipi shares that he owes his growth as a small business owner entirely to art markets, where he sets up what he jokingly refers to as his mobile gallery. “As an artist,
I create art for people, and those people like meeting the artist. I’ve found that once they hear my stories and hear about my life, they end up buying my art because of our conversation.”
O’Connell isn’t surprised that Mushipi’s success is driven, in part, by that connection. “Art is part of being human,” he says. “It makes it nice to be alive.”

The Secret is Out
Tucked away in the middle of South County, Charlestown has always been one of the region’s best kept secrets. Divided by Route 1, part of it is rural and woodsy while the other part is full of secret beaches, coves, and nature preserves. Both sides o er a quaint New England atmosphere coupled with unexpected surprises such as shops, restaurants, and attractions that sneak up around every corner along scenic Route 1A. Driving Route 1, you may find yourself stopping and turning around to revisit something that caught your eye. Lately, the sleepy town has been getting lots of buzz and rightly so, with a revamped inn, headline-making James Beard award-winning chef, and popular everexpanding festivals that bookend August.

Named after King Charles II, Charlestown was incorporated in 1738 with the General Stanton Inn opening just two years later, making it one of the oldest inns in the country. George Washington once slept here, along with other US presidents Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, and George H.W. Bush. Fast-forward to today, the property opened in July for its first season after being treated to a $2 million renovation courtesy of new owners Jackie and David Moore, a visionary couple of empty nesters who returned to the state after raising their family in Simsbury, CT. Mindful of retaining the colonial charm, modern updates like air conditioning and Wifi have been added. Says native son David, “this historic inn needed a facelift and we welcomed the challenge.” Jackie nods, adding, “this summer our goal is to welcome guests to our newly renovated bedrooms which feature sumptuous bedding, each with a private newly tiled bathroom. We're confident guests at the Inn and the restaurant will relax and enjoy themselves.”
With rich history comes the lore of the inn being haunted. So, are there ghosts? “Oh yes, three sets of ghosts have been reported,” Jackie grins, explaining that the last General Stanton died at the inn in December of 1821 and is buried in the cemetery on the

Today The Tavern serves elevated comfort food showcasing farm- and sea-to-table dishes and creative cocktails behind the same walls that housed the notorious guests of the past.
"When we opened the General Stanton Inn last August, our objective was to build a reputation for excellent food and great service," says Jackie. "Our chef, Westerly native Tom Hagist, put us on the map as an exciting new dining destination in Southern Rhode Island; we feel like we accomplished our first goal.”
Another part of The General Stanton that’s been brought back to life is the flea market, which ran on the property for 56 years. Rather than take that on themselves, the Moores partnered with Field of Artisans, producers of popular art markets. “Hearing

of their stellar reputation, I reached out to Kevin [Momenee] and Katrina [Meehan] to transform the old flea market into an upscale antique and craft market,” says David. “They have done a marvelous job, and this summer we’re adding food and beverage service including delicious wine slushies.”
Meehan, founder and field producer of Field of Artisans, has a special connection to the area, having grown up in South County. “My partner Kevin and I have so much appreciation for what former General Stanton owner Janice Falcone built with the flea market. It's an impressive feat to create such a name, following, and platform –especially without the internet back then. When tasked with the revival, we wanted to make sure we honored the roots of the experience.” What the pair did change was the name, dropping “flea”; it’s now simply The General’s Market. “We feel this reflects our version while also aligning with the atmosphere David and Jackie are providing at The General Stanton Inn and The Tavern.”

This old town also knows how to party. The Charlestown Seafood Festival kicks off the month
(August 4-6), marking the 38th year of the seafood extravaganza held at Ninigret Park. The now three-day event which started as a single-day with seven vendors back in 1985, today boasts 160 vendors (15 new ones this year), live music, and fireworks, with an expected attendance of over 38,000 people.
“I’m really excited to bring the festival back again this year,” says Heather Paliotta, executive director of the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce who serves as producer.
“The Seafood Festival is such a summer icon. We’re just hoping to have good weather and see lots of visitors this year!”

Capping o summer on Labor Day weekend is another three-day fête at Ninigret Park, Rhythm & Roots, but swap lobster rolls for live music, craft and food vendors, and more. The family friendly event attracts 5,000 people daily and attendees are encouraged to stay the entire time at an onsite camping area or take advantage of nearby lodgings. The schedule includes Trombone Shorty, Greensky Bluegrass, The Robert Cray Band, Shinyribs, The Infamous Stringdusters, and JJ Grey and Mofro. New this year is a camp stage, where there will be special late-night performances exclusively for the campers. “Of course, we’ll still have our quiet camping area that won’t be impacted by that,” says Tyler Grill, CEO and co-founder of Goodworks Entertainment who runs the festival.“We’re excited about the line-up this year and have a lot of great bands. It’s really exciting that this festival has been around for 25 years and is still going strong.”

LIVING THE DELI DREAM
New neighbors in East Greenwich serve up modern brunch bites and sandwiches
“On Facebook, I asked the East Greenwich Moms group what they thought the downtown area needed, and with a unanimous vote – a deli was desired,” says Grace Bramhall, an entrepreneurial new resident of the town. A pastime of Zillow house-hunting brought Bramhall and Ty Cosgrove to Tillinghast Road from Massachusetts two years ago, where they fell in love with their now home – and soon set the wheels in motion to curate a space for tasty sandwiches and brunch.
Living out Cosgrove’s dream of owning a restaurant, the couple opened Downtown Tilly as a family-friendly spot with something for everyone. “We are very community oriented and want our menu to showcase that,” says Bramhall, listing o the nearby farms they source from, including Pat’s Pastured in East Greenwich and Exeter-based EMMA Acres and Our Kids Farm. “Our chef, Carlos Farrell, is extremely talented and strives to win a James Beard award one day; he makes almost everything in house, including our fan-favorite house-made seasoned chips.”
Favorite brunch eats include New Day, New “Mi” (an egg sandwich with pastrami and sriracha cabbage), Huevos Ranchero, and the Toast Board, featuring a slice each of their many fancifully topped breads. For lunch, there’s plenty of creative sandwiches, including local homage Goddard Steak Park, with thinly shaved sirloin, pepper jack cheese, mushrooms, red and green peppers, and caramelized onion on a ciabatta roll. Having recently been approved for a liquor license, Farrell keeps things interesting with their Deli After Dark dinner options that rotate monthly.
On the side, Bramhall hopes to one day convert the circa-1825 barn at The Tilly House (the name a ectionately bestowed upon their home) into a small-scale event venue. She relays, “We moved without planned jobs, or idea of what we would do when we arrived, but knew this is where we wanted to call home.” And now they get to delight their neighbors with wholesome bites, too. Irish Pub Meets Beach Bar
A beachy watering hole delights regulars and summer people with seaside fare served late
We rushed into The Pub for our 5pm reservation in classic Matunuck fashion, sweatshirts and wet bathing suits, just off a boat ride on the Salt Pond. While admittedly I’d been to The Pub hundreds (thousands?) of times, this trip was a unique opportunity to distill the coastal mainstay’s lure into words – a task I was eager to take on.
My girlfriends and I were seated on the middeck, where we basked in the sounds of music and waves crashing on shore. The aesthetic is what you’d expect from a beach dive: umbrellas and an eclectic mix of retired road signs backdropped by miles of ocean views.

Beverage director Kevin MacIntyre walked us through the drink menu, a pleasant divergence from the overly sugary, frozen beach beverages you might expect; The Pub o ers an expansive selection of refreshing, unprocessed cocktails. First up was the Pub Punch, with the zing of dark rum floating on top, followed by a soothing journey of tropical fruit juices and an unexpected hit of nutmeg. The Blicky was a super fun and sippable take on the Ocean Mist’s Watermelon Red Bull Ricky, combining Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka with Blueberry Red Bull. While clubby by nature, the crowd-favorite Blicky was surprisingly well balanced. My personal favorite, the Watermelon Spritz, was mixed with cold-pressed lime juice, agave, and a hint of basil.
MUG CLUB EXCLUSIVE
The Pub’s famous Mug Club, with members enjoying discount beers and personal tankards hung at the bar, has been in operation “since the beginning of time.” With just under 100 mugs – many passed down over generations – getting in the club is a difficult feat. Once a year, eager regulars stand in line hoping a spot may open up.
Must-Try Items
Salmon BLT Wrap ($17)
Seared salmon filet, jalapeño bacon, leaf lettuce, vine ripe tomatoes and tangy dill remoulade
Mason Jar Meatballs ($14)
Mini meatballs in a jerk mango-habanero glaze topped with tropical pico
Since The Pub has been around a long time – both as Joyce’s Family Pub and Tara’s Tipperary Tavern (in my lifetime) –MacIntyre explained that the restaurant holds the spirit of its Irish pub roots by keeping things like Bangers and Mashed on the menu, along with adding a few modern takes like the Irish Nachos and Reuben Eggrolls. With new chef Alvie McClasky recently joining the team, the restaurant has leveled up their menu and expanded their kitchen hours to midnight daily.

In full staycation mode, we enjoyed the sunshine and bevvies long enough to work up a big appetite. We opened the meal with a half pound of Chilled Peel and Eat Shrimp, Mason Jar Meatballs, and a basket of Frickles. The shrimp were hardy and well-seasoned, way tastier than your average vehicle-for-cocktail-sauce appetizer. The sweet and spicy mini meatballs had a kick of habanero, plus pineapple chunks and pico de gallo topping. The fried pickles had just the right amount of fry – indulgent but endlessly snackable.
When it came time for entrees, my friend went for the Chicken and Wa es, the latter o ering an exquisite crunch of caramelized syrup complemented by savory, crispy fried chicken and a drizzle of spicy honey glaze. In search of a healthy option that wasn’t a Caesar salad, I chose the Roast Veggie Quinoa Bowl, which was packed with carrots, peppers, roasted broccoli, and greens. My sister, joining us late, didn’t think twice about her selection, the Salmon BLT Wrap, which she’s had a few times since they started serving it two months ago. Between the jalapeño bacon and a tangy dill remoulade, who can blame her?
CUISINE: Irish-inspired pub fare
ATMOSPHERE: Casual beachside dive
A huge part of The Pub experience is the camaraderie of going on a weeknight for one of their many regular events, including my sister’s favorites, trivia night and karaoke – AKA Pub-e-Okee – that attract enthusiastic regulars. You’d be hard-pressed to find a livelier bunch when Sea Shanty Night (which happened earlier this summer) takes over the indoor bar.
Laughing and full, we closed the meal out watching the sun begin to set over the Atlantic. The way I see it, if you’re not a local, The Pub is worth the drive, and if you are a local, it’s worth the walk.

A Balanced Diet
The plucky Wakefield nonprofit helping to build more diverse and resilient marine ecosystems
From tiny planktonic animals and filter feeders to the big fish in the sea – and everything in between – a healthy marine ecosystem is all about balance and diversity. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that what we harvest from our local waters to eat factors into that equation, too.
“When you eat a diversity of local seafood species, particularly species that are really abundant in our ecosystems but haven’t received as much attention on menus, we’re allowing the ecosystems to maintain a more
natural balance,” says Kate Masury, executive director of the aptly named Eating with the Ecosystem. Working with scientists, fishermen, and chefs across New England, the Wakefield-based nonprofit devises creative ways to sustain not only our wild seafood system, but also the people who depend on it. This work takes the form of, for instance, a climate change initiative partnering with scientists to investigate the species moving into our region, and then taking that data to local seafood businesses to brainstorm
ways of incorporating these shifts in species into their business models. It’s also cooking demonstrations highlighting local species, and citizen science projects sending seafood enthusiasts on the hunt for local species popping up in markets.
“We’re a pretty small organization, but we try to have a big impact,” says Masury, and the need has never been greater. “We’re seeing a lot of shifts in what our New England ecosystems look like over the years due to climate change and other

SCUP
“The filets that come o a scup tend to be a little smaller but they’re a great fish to cook whole,” says Masury. Grill, roast, or fry whole, or remove the pin bones for a small panfried filet or fish tacos. “You can even eat them raw; they’re delicious as a crudo or in a bowl.”
SKATE
“Skate’s one of my personal favorites. I think it tastes similar to scallops; it’s got a sweet flavor and a really unique texture.” Masury recommends pan searing or serving with a brown butter caper sauce. “You can do that on any fish and it would taste delicious.”
DOGFISH
“It’s definitely kind of underloved in the area but it’s often used in fish and chips in Europe. It fries up really well or it’s got a little bit more of a meaty texture but still a very mild flavor.”
CRAB
Sand crabs and Jonah crabs can be used interchangeably: “They’ve got this kind of flaky, really sweet crab meat flavor that’s great in a crab cake or roll.” Or green crabs, an invasive species that destroy eelgrass beds and salt marshes, “actually taste really good,” says Masury. “Smaller ones make a great stock or broth you can use in dishes like ramen or risotto.”
factors, so we want to make sure those ecosystems are able to adapt.”
Our actions on land also trickle down into our marine ecosystems in the form of chemical fertilizers and harmful cleaning products – and choosing seafood from our waters not only closes the travel distance from food to plate, “but you’re also supporting your local community and the harvesters that brought that seafood to you,” says Masury.
And our own o cial state shellfish? “Quahogs are a great shellfish to celebrate,” says Masury. “Oysters, kelp, and wild shellfish like quahog are all species that actually clean up our local waters. Kelp captures carbon and is a great tool for carbon sequestration; oysters and other bivalves filter feed and help clean up our water.” The more of these organisms we harvest from the ocean, the more we’re also putting back into it, contributing to a thriving ecosystem.
In practice, eating in harmony with the ecosystem’s natural diversity can be daunting
to the uninitiated. “People can get bogged down by what species it is, and I think it’s important to not think about what fish or shellfish it is, but what are its culinary characteristics – is it a flaky white mild-flavored fish? A briny shellfish? Is it a stronger, more high-oil content fish? If you look at things that way, then you have a lot of options that are local that fit into those categories.”
By thinking outside the box, explains Masury, it creates markets for the underappreciated local species, which can then be fished in proportion to their natural abundances. “It gives the fishermen opportunities because then they have markets for the full variety of species that they’re allowed to catch.”
“When you eat local seafood, you have a greater incentive to care about the place that produced your food,” she continues. “A lot of times we don’t necessarily see what’s happening in the ocean and it can be more challenging to make that connection that healthy local ecosystems equal food production.”

Like many new entrepreneurs, Chris and Mandy Aubin used the pandemic as an opportunity to refocus their lives. “I’ve always loved co ee and like a lot of people, my wife got really into plants during the pandemic,” says Chris. “We thought, maybe there’s a space for retail products unique to what we are interested in.” The couple decided to follow their passion and Seed Café and Espresso Bar, a space selling co ee and plants at Still on Main in downtown Pawtucket, was born.
“The whole concept of the co ee shop is essentially wanting to show co ee as
a sense of place, where the co ee comes from, focusing on single origins,” says Chris. “Customers can get multiple brewed coffees in di erent ways – drips, pour-overs, and iced, without it being too complicated.”
The cafe also o ers build-your-own breakfast sandwiches at a ordable price points. Additional menu items, including toasts and sandwiches, as well as in-cafe events will be added later this summer. Look for their products at the Pawtucket Farmers Market at The Guild Brewery through October. Pawtucket, Facebook: Seed Cafe RI
What’s brewing in South County
The state’s newest small-batch brewery is scheduled to open in South Country Commons in late summer. Named for popular Route 1 landmark, the Hannah Robinson Tower, Tower Hill Brewery is a dream come true for four lifelong friends. Like many new projects in the food service industry, it’s been a long time coming. “There are still supply chain issues due to the pandemic,” says co-founder Brian Hubert.
Expect the brewery to have a widespread selection of popular beers. “We’ll have a great offering of hazy IPAs, which everyone loves,” says Hubert. “Ivan, our head brewer, who has been homebrewing for several years, has an amazing porter that he is going to scale up.” Tower Hill will also serve seasonal brews such as winter ales, summer blondes, and Oktoberfests. A seasonal beer garden will o er “800-900 square feet of outdoor space that will open into the main area inside,” adds Hubert. “We’re going to really encourage our customers to become patrons of the restaurants in South County Commons. We’re also hoping to do some live entertainment.” South Kingston, TowerHillBrewing.com
Big ideas drive a small new co ee venture
A green concept for roasting co ee beans inspired Vincent Emery to establish The Lil’ Rhody Co ee Company while still a student at St. Raphael Academy in 2022. “When you look at how co ee is traditionally roasted using fossil fuels, and the global supply chain that fuels it, nothing has really changed in the past 100 years,” explains the Bryant University sophomore and CEO of the company that he runs alongside his father Patrick. “We decided to roast our co ee using 100 percent electricity, with no fossil fuels, resulting in over 80 percent fewer CO2 emissions. We’re doing these small things to set ourselves up for long-term success.”
The co ee will initially be sold online and at farmers markets throughout the region. In true Rhode Island fashion, the co ee varieties are named for landmarks including Rocky Point (cold brew), Federal Hill (espresso blend), and What Cheer (medium blend). “You’ll be able to go to the website and purchase bags, tools, merchandise, and other brewing products,” adds Emery. Drawing on an amassed inventory of furnishings and accents reflective of their style, which they describe as transitional with a modern coastal flair, they outfit empty houses so that prospective buyers can envision what daily living would be like. Brown explains, “Staging shows buyers the amount and the scale of furniture that truly fits in rooms; it also sells a lifestyle.” We asked the duo, named Top Ten Professional Home Staging Team of the Year by Vacant Staging North America, 2022 – and Keeley named Professional Stager of the Year by Occupied Staging, 2022 – to explain some of the things they recently did to a house in Portsmouth.

LIVING ROOM
A large neutral rug with cream, browns, and tan anchors the living room area in the open-concept floor plan, while the light gray sofa connects with the kitchen backsplash. Leather cubes bring texture and warmth without obstructing the prized view. The light wood co ee and dining tables provide contrast to the black console table behind the couch, and wood and black side tables round out the room. Co ee table accents are kept low to direct the gaze straight through to outside or to the fireplace.
A coastal landscape draws the eye up the fireplace towards the vaulted ceiling. A camel and cream plaid blanket on the arm of the chair brings in a nice print while creating a cozy spot by the fireplace. Layering pillows in cream and tan create a finished at-home feel.

DINING ROOM
Mixing and matching dining chairs brings a curated look. Rattan chairs add a coastal nod without overwhelming the space. The black frames of the fern prints tie in with the black accents throughout the space. A subtle stripe of green echoes the bedroom rug and adds visual interest.
KITCHEN
Leather barstools bring warmth and a nice contrast to the blue kitchen island.

GET RHODY STYLE
CLASSIC NEW ENGLAND
Salt + Pine style favors bright spaces with neutral color bases, along with elements such as wood, white, nature-inspired decor, layered textiles in di erent materials and subtle patterns, and splashes of deep green or blues. “Also think about scents that are coastal inspired, one that has notes of salt or pine!” says Brown.
LOCAL PALETTE
“Rhode Island can be very coastal, very city, or very rural/wooded. We like to incorporate natural colors and then layer in some green or blue depending on where in the state we are,” says Brown. “Natural wood bowls or coastal landscape paintings definitely give the vibe of being near the water.”
WOMEN-OWNED
Based in West Greenwich and serving the tri-state area, Brown and Keeley offer three types of staging at various price points. Learn more about Rhode Island’s award-winning home staging company at SaltAndPineHome.com
BEDROOM
White bedding appears luxe and is the perfect foil for layers of neutral textiles, like a chunky knit throw to layer, adding warmth and texture on chilly spring nights. The throw pillows also bring warmer hues to the space with deeper browns and creams. The gold stand mirror brings elegance while the mirror reflects light and movement, making the already large room feel even more spacious. The media consoles serving as nightstands bring some contrast and an unexpected element with the black metal and glass doors.

How serendipity led a jewelry designer to open a second location for her brand on Block Island
Your shop is near the idyllic path to Crescent Beach. How did this specific location come to be and what did you need to do to make the space your own?
I had just opened my first store in upstate New York and was not in any way looking to open another location when my dear friend and real estate agent, Julie Kiley, called me up and said “I have the perfect spot for you.” I agreed to take a look, and then fell in love with the space immediately. It’s tiny, so it felt very manageable to staff and provided some welcome constraints when planning how to merchandise. That being said, we put a lot of work into cleaning the space up for our first season. I commissioned local woodworker, Chris Phelan to make all of our display furniture and found two beautiful pieces of driftwood to use as our clothing racks. The space has minor notes of European beach style, but really allows for the jewelry, artwork, and clothing to tell the story of our brand.
You are celebrating your sixth summer on the island. Any trends in clientele?
The mother-daughter relationships are very strong out here and it’s wonderful to witness. I’ve found that both mothers and daughters introduce each other to our brand and continue to collect jewelry and clothing year after year – often times trading. I get to see this at play when I go out to dinner and servers and diners are both wearing earrings from us, or talk to real estate agents, and those renting houses here for the week, and both are wearing clothing from us. It’s about communicating a love for this place, something apparent in all of our lives.

The beauty of your jewelry is in the simplicity of the settings, keeping the focus on the natural elements. What are your favorite pieces to make?
My favorite pieces to make at the moment (it changes often) are the cascade earrings. I get to play with the full array of our stone collection and come up with compositions that tell a small story or poem. I started setting Block Island beach stones in our 14k floating setting a few years ago as mementos; I love the way yellow gold contrasts with black stones, and brings out the vibrant greens and reds in others.
What are some of your go-to spots and small businesses on BI?
Glass Onion, Lazy Fish, Tori Jones Studio, and Studio DWC for homewares, the Mutt Hut to treat my gals, Persephone’s or the Bagel Shop for breakfast, Los Gatitos for lunch, Winfield’s or Eli’s for dinner. The Farmer’s Market every Wednesday and Saturday mornings at Legion Park.

Describe the feeling you get when you first open the doors for the season, and also when you lock-up until the next year. I love setting up the shop at the beginning of the season. Spring/Summer lines are always so much fun and it’s a pleasure to merchandise alongside the artists we represent and create vignettes. I always feel a little sad locking up as I know I’ll miss looking out the window and talking to all our incredible summer clients, but then I remember we all need to rest!
