KEEP ON TRUCKIN’ A piece of East Greenwich’s town history is lovingly restored by the retired firefighters who brought it home There’s something about a fire truck. Just watch the face of a child when they see one, horns ablaze and lights flashing. For little kids who grow up wanting to be a firefighter, that love extends well into adulthood and beyond. These days, at the East Greenwich Veteran Fireman’s Club (EGVFC), a certain group of retired firefighters continue to enjoy their love of the bright red vehicles, tinkering with them while sharing stories of days gone by. Last December, though, things got particularly exciting for the club, which opened in 1974 and sits high on a hill on Queen Street with sweeping views of the restaurants and harbor below.

“This is the Rolls Royce of fire trucks,” says John Pierson, a retired deputy fire chief, leaning on “the Fox,” an Ahrens-Fox ladder truck, which served the town from 1931 to 1958, before it was sold to a volunteer department in South Meriden, Connecticut. The Fox now lives in the museum inside the club – which also houses a bar and event hall (and outside, a patio and tiki bar) – in addition to the five restored fire trucks and hundreds of artifacts from the department’s history, first as a volunteer operation and then, beginning in 1969, as a paid department.

According to Pierson, the club members started to realize in the 1980s that there was great historic value in preserving these historic trucks. So they started doing that, with a focus on finding ones, like the Fox, that they’d lost track of. When the Fox made its return after a 60-plus year absence, there were many excited museum volunteers eager to receive it. The host fire house no longer had room for it, and while it wasn’t in bad shape, it needed extensive repairs and updates. The plan was to restore it and add it to the collection of trucks that are used in parades and at events. There were only three Foxes ever built, and this is the last one in existence.

“We’re very fortunate to have it back,” says Bob Farrell, who served as a volunteer firefighter in East Greenwich for many years.

The list of repairs was long, and it included the rebuilding and painting of seven wooden

ladders. Farrell was part of the team of a dozen museum committee members, including Pierson, Leigh Johnson, Lawson Salisbury, Mason Rhodes, and Jon Larsson – though sadly Salisbury passed away last year and Larsson, this year. “Larsson fixed everything on this truck,” says Pierson. “He was so excited that finally, all five of our trucks were running well. And now he isn’t here to enjoy it.”

The team finished the work in time to drive it in the East Greenwich Memorial Day Parade in May and enter it into the fire truck competition at the annual Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus convention in July. The Fox made its parade debut and went on to win the Presidential Award, beating out dozens of other entrants.

On a sunny fall afternoon in the garage,

there’s a bittersweet feeling as Larsson is no longer here to share in the camaraderie of a special project. Already, the group looks forward to the next project – installing a refurbished Gamewell fire alarm pull box, fixtures that lined street corners throughout America since the early 1900s.

When the box went up outside, it was dedicated to the memory of Jon Larsson.

“Volunteer departments are fading away,” says Farrell. And while that may be true, in this corner of Rhode Island, their history and tradition live on alongside the memories of the volunteer firefighters who valiantly served their communities.

able to find any place else, with an emphasis on art and mid-century furniture, lighting, and a lot of pop culture items.”

Lately, college students and production companies are among the store’s major customers.

“The key is trying to find stuff that looks cool, not the expensive designer stuff. I try to find stuff that’s affordable, that people can buy,” says Hill. “A huge portion of what we do is sets, props,

and decorations for film and TV. We’ve done 26 movies now. POP also allows me to exercise my creative urges by having shows, art exhibits, and other events. It seamlessly flows back and forth from my management company.”

POP Emporium’s Darren Hill has worked almost every job in the music industry, from T-shirt seller to opening for U2. The East Greenwich resident and owner of the eclectic storefront in Providence’s Warehouse District has lived a life in music, first as a founding member of the New Orleans punk band Red Rockers, and later as a manager of acts including Dropkick Murphys and The Replacements. Most weekends, you can find him at POP Emporium, a business that sells everything from baseball cards to mid-century furniture, making it one of the funkiest stores in the region.

How did the Louisiana native and former bass-playing rebel end up dealing antiques in Providence? Hill shared his story in a recent call from New Orleans where the band was rehearsing for their first show in 40 years. “The last time we played together was 1983. We started in a garage; we were best friends and always have been,” says Hill of the band that once scored an MTV hit with “China,” the lead single from the critically acclaimed album Condition Red. Following Red Rockers’ break up, Hill moved to Boston in 1984. He connected with RI music legends Mark Cutler and Emerson Torrey, formerly of The Schemers, and together they formed The Raindogs, along with Jim Reilly of Stiff Little Fingers. Later, Hill played with Paul Westerberg of The Replacements and other bands into the 1990s before family obligations took over. At that point, he began his career as a manager, a role he had informally served in previous bands. “The first band I signed was The Dropkick Murphys and then The Royal Crowns, Combustible Edison; my roster was mainly local,” says Hill. He currently manages The Replacements, The New York Dolls, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, among others.

Now, as the owner of POP, Hill jokes, “It was supposed to be my retirement gig; it sort of snowballed quicker than I thought.” With an extensive inventory, POP is a space where you’ll fall in love with things you didn’t know you needed. Hill opened the business about 10 years ago, prompted by searches for one-of-a-kind items that you’d have a hard time finding elsewhere.

“A lot of it is stuff that I accumulated touring on the road; I would chase down antiques. I look for anything that is unusual that you wouldn’t be

What it is: A fabric store and community space where students can learn to sew or complete projects with guidance.

What makes it a Rhody Gem? “We are as much about community as we are about sewing,” says founder Suzanne Mancini, a former NYC designer and RISD grad who taught at her alma mater for 16 years before opening her business. She’s so dedicated to teaching ages nine and up to sew that the first location was within walking distance of the middle school. Today The Sew-Op is also a fabric store, housed in its current larger space. Says Mancini, “our shop is special due to our staff. We employ graduates from the University of Rhode Island’s TMD (Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design), seamstresses, artists, and retirees from many fields. We are a small shop so our classes are small; we all offer something unique and share our love of fabric and sewing with our students and each other.” Look for upcoming holiday-themed workshops in addition to their regularly scheduled sewing classes.

Serving on the Homefront What Rhode Islanders are doing to honor and uplift military families right now As Hurricane Lee blazed its way up the coast in September, masons rushed to put the finishing touches on a low stone wall that would complete the newest monument at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.

The hurricane turned out to be a non-event, so with the wall complete, the state’s first monument honoring Indigenous veterans was dedicated on September 20 in a ceremony that included speakers, blessings, and honor songs.

project that started in 2020 when Charles Smith, a cemetery specialist at Veterans Memorial and member of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe, approached the Tomaquag Museum. “He was concerned that there was no monument for Indigenous veterans,” says Lorén Spears, museum executive director, who helped create the Honoring Indigenous Veterans Committee to move the project forward. Over several years, the committee raised $80,000 to hire Indigenous masons to bring their carefully sketched design to life. The monument is made up of an archway that curves over a memorial stone engraved with the names of the 12 tribes represented by Indigenous veterans interred at the cemetery.

“The reality is that Indigenous people have served in all branches of the military,” says Spears. “Since the Revolutionary War, the Indigenous have had the highest number of people, per capita, in the armed services. In my community, if you’re not a veteran, it’s likely your life is touched by one.” Spears says this is owed to multiple factors. “Indigenous communities have warrior societies. There’s a lot of respect for warriors and pride in protecting your family and community. Of course anyone who protects their country does it with pride, but there’s an extra

layer of pride when it’s your homeland.

And the lack of any kind of monument to Indigenous service [in this state] is an oversight that was long due to be corrected.”

Nicole O’Brien, owner and founder of Warwick gift shop Operation Made, is a former military spouse who was the recipient of a different type of community support.

Years ago, O’Brien was stationed in Japan with her then-husband, and other military members offered her much-needed encouragement as she launched her fledgling art business. When she returned to the states, she found great success with her business,

and opened a manufacturing facility that had more space than she needed. So she reached out to other creatives in her military community, inviting them to join her.

“On Veterans Day in 2018, I opened a little shop with 12 vendors in it,” O’Brien says. Today, Operation Made serves as a consignment platform for 80 different vendors who have either served in the military or are family members of veterans, creating a space for them to grow their product-based businesses. “I had no idea there was such a need for this,” she relays. “Military makers really want a platform.”

To support veterans’ mental health, she recently turned a portion of her shop into what she calls the Impact Room, a space dedicated to bringing awareness to the high rate of suicide among veterans. “On average, 22 veterans commit suicide every day,” says O’Brien. The Impact Room will have a memorial to veterans who have died by suicide, and there will be resources for veterans struggling with mental illness. “If they want to make stuff or learn to make stuff, I’m here with the resources to help them do that,” she explains. “Art is so therapeutic.”

Among the products on display are everything from pet toys to hot sauce. “We have a wide range,” O’Brien says. But she does much more for military makers than offer them shelf space in her shop. “I keep everything low cost so that they can test their products and pricing strategies,” she says. “And if they need help creating a manufacturing process or promoting themselves, I assist them with that, too.”

Although O’Brien’s store is designed to help makers build a business, she recognizes that not all of her vendors are interested in selling their products in volume on their own. “A lot of veterans started making art as therapy, so they simply want to make stuff,” she says.

But about 10 years ago, he decided he wanted to do more and started Veteran Coffee Roasters, an offshoot of Custom House Coffee. One dollar of every pound sold goes to veteran support organizations. “The majority of our support goes to Operation Stand Down Rhode Island,” Mastin continues, describing the

Johnston-headquartered non-profit that supports veterans at risk of homelessness.

“We are able to donate an average of more than $300 a month to them.”

No matter if the coffee is sold under the Custom House label or the Veteran Coffee label, Mastin puts his exacting attention to detail into it. “We roast our own coffee because it has to be the absolute best. We never do anything halfway,” he says, explaining that

Tens of thousands of visitors descend on South County for its warmest months (who can resist sipping a Del’s in the warm salty breeze by the ocean’s edge?), but insiders know it’s the cozy season when this corner of the world feels like a slice of Americana at its most savory. And while the sunbathers have disappeared and the lifeguard stands are tucked away for their long winter’s nap, the inspiration of coastal New England enclave reverberates, especially in the region’s artist, artisan, and creative community.

Shop owner and metalsmith Martha Andrew, better known as MarMar – the nickname shared by her eponymous artisan-driven boutique – has burrowed into the community since arriving in Wakefield a year ago, the week before Christmas. “It’s kind of been a whirlwind,” she concedes. Andrew also has a new seasonal shop on Block Island, so she's no stranger to setting up her bench and getting to work, but this inaugural year on the mainland has been one of firsts. The boutique space on Main Street, just about a block north of the busiest commercial cluster, is stocked with a diverse collection of jewelry not only by Andrew but from artists coast to coast, many of whom were her classmates. “I did a post-baccalaureate program at University of the Arts in Philly – it was a twoyear program – after getting my English degree and I decided I wanted to go back to school for metalsmithing. My dad said, ‘That's great. You're paying for it,’” she says with a laugh. Today, Andrew is able to take her former fellow classmates’ work on consignment and introduce them to customers in South County, New Shoreham, and beyond.

“It's really special that I'm able to connect people with these artists who they would never find because I don't carry typical jewelry. I like carrying things that are a little bit different from the mainstream,” says Andrew. The handbags, candles, perfumes made in Newport, ceramic jewelry holders by a local potter, and other finds in the shop are also chosen for their uniqueness.

“For the most part, I personally have every single artist’s number in my phone. I've either carried them for a long time, or I went to school with them, or I just know them from the artist community in Rhode Island,” explains Andrew. “I think that the aspect of the connection between the customer and the artist is so much more of a personal experience rather than just buying something that has been mass produced. I really love sharing work, and, you know, this isn't stuff that they're gonna find anywhere.”

Like millions of people around the world, the pandemic forced Nancy Reid Carr, a self-employed artist for 15 years, to reevaluate. She had participated in art festivals and wholesale trade shows around the country but found her post-pandemic stride consulting a brick-andmortar shop, which inspired her to open one of her own. “Curating the store and doing all of the visual merchandising, it was kind of that extra creative element that I had been seeking,” says Carr.

Honey Gallery in North Kingstown opened early in the summer of 2022, and hit the ground running. “I feel like I got a huge warm welcome from the community. I knew a lot of people, but I also have obviously met a lot of people since I opened — a lot of artists right in the area that I did not know about,” she says. “I think people are really happy to have something at this end of town that is

supporting the local economy, and you can find really unique gifts.”

Carr estimates more than 60 percent of the artists represented at Honey Gallery are Rhode Island-based. Examples include wooden charcuterie boards by Eric Carter, illustrated prints by SepiaLepus, jewelry by metalsmith Deb Terilli, Simply Serasi minimalist jewelry

An artist at heart, Honey Gallery also functions as a studio space for Carr, who makes her jewelry on site and ships it to clients and retailers nationwide. “Having the store enabled me to open up a different creative avenue for myself while also supporting local artists in the process.”

An optometrist by trade, Didem Kokturk got to a point where she couldn’t ignore the artist inside of her any longer. “I practiced for almost 20 years before I kind of felt like there was no creativity in my life,” she admits. So she indulged her inner calling, experimenting with myriad mediums before she found, perhaps, where she was always meant to be. “The minute I walked into an oil painting studio, there was something about the smell, the look of the paints.

I was like, ‘Okay, I know this is what I want to do.’” Self-taught, Kokturk painted at any opportunity, and seven years ago, her husband encouraged her to paint full time.

When she was approached by Harbor View Artisans in Wickford,

an artists cooperative, she became a member and found her people.

Today, nearly 30 artists comprise the co-op, which enjoys an apropos picturesque shop just steps from the tranquil harbor. “It has grown to be such a wonderful co-op,” says Kokturk. “I really feel like it's a very special place with all the artists that are there. The community we formed with the repeat customers that we have, it's really a very unique setup.” The artists own and operate the store, taking turns at the helm (but all ensure the dog treat station out front remains stocked) and Kokturk says the arrangement allows for the community to get to know each of them – and vice versa. “We kind of just adopted Wickford, and Wickford has adopted us,” she explains.

Back to the Future A noted designer shares how an old home was reconfigured to embrace its roots while accommodating modern life For many New England homeowners, it’s not uncommon to live in a house that is 100 years old. Lifestyles were different back then and older homes often have original features that now seem curious to our modern eyes – like small narrow closets (does a bike go in there?) – or worse, rooms that received remodels in decades past with trappings and decisions that now seem odd and dated (hardwood flooring hidden beneath layers of carpeting and laminate). But what if your new home is old and you want to keep that vibe – but imbue a modern twist? This was the case for a young family who fell hard for a classic center-hall Colonial on Providence’s East Side.

Built in 1920, the home had succumbed to some builder-grade renovations in the 1980s and bespoke millwork, solid cabinetry, and moldings had been removed. To course-correct, the couple turned to Moore House Design (MHD), a family-run business based half in Warren and half in New York City whose work they’d been admiring on Instagram. MHD has a holistic approach to creative and functional design that has landed them national attention, including being on an episode of Point of View: A Designer Profile for Magnolia Network on Discovery+. Says Blair Moore, founder and creative director, “Our goal was to bring this

home back to life and back to its historic roots, but with some modern flair.”

In a full-scale design, renovation, and furnishings project, the MHD team set a goal of transforming the home by “infusing it with only the most charming of details.”

The first-floor expanded kitchen now boasts “sooty midnight” cabinetry and textural brick walls, while the second-floor main suite has built-in closets, which provide coveted storage while incorporating sleek colonial-inspired character. “The overall scope of this project required a hefty, multi-floor, full gut, or ‘floverhaul’ as I like to call it,” says Moore. “We overhauled the floor plan with

attention to spatial flow and creating storage for the growing family. The kitchen, entryway, pantry, mudroom, dining room, and main suite were renovated head to toe.”

So what goes into making an old house that was remodeled to look new, look old again? Moore shares that it begins with the “discovery” phase. “Our team does a lot of research about the home and the architecture type to be able to execute our interior architecture plans.” While Moore explains there were some major structural changes that her team made to the layout of the first floor, they didn’t want to lose that quintessential New England Colonial feel.

Topping the MHD list was bringing back architectural features via installations of redesigned casework, millwork, paneling, and crown moldings; they also moved structural walls so it looked intentional and like it had always been that way. “A lot of Colonials we work on have original brick but this house was stripped of it before we arrived, so naturally we wanted to add it back in in the kitchen and mudroom. We layered that with a limewash over the top that calcifies over time,” Moore explains.

Once the heavy lifting was done, MHD enjoyed imparting what they refer to as their signature broody style. Says Moore,

“it’s a term we coined to describe our mix of bright and moody, and it brings so much depth.” This is where paint and furnishings come in. “Our team is absolutely methodical when it comes to paint colors. Moore shares that the architecture of a space always inspires how MHD places furniture and decor throughout the home in an artistic way. “Our firm has a love for selecting the perfect antiques from all over the globe

and layering them with carefully proportioned custom pieces. We layer in a blend of our clients’ lifestyles as well as a very organic layering of custom and antiques to deepen the roots of the space,” says Moore. “We believe that every house should feel gathered and layered with elements of our clients as if they were to travel the world and collect all of these incredible treasures that just perfectly and effortlessly work within the home.

Our goal is for the furniture to fit effortlessly within the architecture of the home.”

Deemed the Colonial Modernist project, Moore reports that the homeowners are overjoyed with the results. Smiling brightly she affirms, “I always say if you don’t have the four components of your interior architecture right – walls, ceilings, floors, and windows – then it doesn’t matter what furniture you add into the space. It will always feel out of place and forced.”

A Stargazer Dreams Big “Writing is a soul calling that I always knew was there. I always wanted to do something more creative,” says Maia Correll. “I never felt like I was sitting down to write a book. I would get this wave of inspiring energy, almost like you’re channeling, and take a pen and the words would start pouring out of me.”

Correll was destined to be a writer. Even while she was studying international business and Spanish at Bryant University and interning virtually at So Rhode Island during the early days of the pandemic, she was busy drafting the outline of what would become her first book, the science fiction tale, Stargazer: The Vedana Saga Book 1. After graduating in 2021, she worked at Disney Parks, Experiences and Products doing marketing analytics; all the while stories and ideas were building inside of her.

Despite being on a career track at Disney, Correll left the company to follow her bliss and finish Stargazer. Not only did she complete her first manuscript, but she also mapped out an entire series of five books, telling the story of Nadya, a foster child whose role in the universe is much larger than anything she or anyone else expected.

“It’s really a book about identity discovery,” explains Correll. “It’s science fiction but it’s really a story about someone breaking free from the mold that is placed on them to find who they are truly meant to be.”

Along the way, she wrote a second manuscript in a completely different style: romantic comedy travel story Dare to Au Pair.

Both books were optioned by publishers in a very short time. Stargazer was released into the world this summer and Dare to Au Pair will be on shelves in the summer of 2024. Publishing is big business and Correll’s educational background has been invaluable in her decision making. “I love that I’m able to follow my passion but I also know how the business world works, which helps when we get down to the nitty gritty of contracts and negotiations,” she says.

Correll is so comfortable with the business side of publishing that she casually mentions, “shopping the book around in Hollywood” when she talks about the potential for a film version of Dare to Au Pair; she’s already been involved in casting narrators for the audiobook version. But she remains modest about her success. “Every day it sinks in deeper and deeper that this is what I do.

Though I had never heard of the dainty green sprig, once I realized the brick-andmortar eatery is the successor to popular food truck Butterhead (named after the lettuce), the name couldn’t be more fitting.

To start, we tucked into two specials: the House Sourdough – which came topped with ricotta cheese from Narragansett Creamery, beet agrodolce from Greenview Farm, and garnished with local bee pollen, toasted hazelnuts, and sunflower shoots from a URI farmshare – and the Mille Feuille, a savory, rectangle-shaped French pastry resembling

baklava. The sumptuous bite was layered with ham and Camembert cheese, garnished with green sprouts, and served over a whole-grain mustard aioli and red pepper relish that nearly had us licking our plates.

In addition to the specials, we ordered the Smoked Bluefish Dip, which arrived with everything crackers and pickled mustard seeds. The bluefish from Fox Smoked Fish (based in Narragansett) was smokey and had an umami flavor that paired wonderfully with the tangy mustard. From the raw bar, we tried the Tuna Crudo, which was soaked in nước chấm – a Vietnamese fish sauce – chives, and a healthy squeeze of lime juice.

Between apps and entrees, we sipped on two signature cocktails. My boyfriend ordered the Tamarind Sour, a bourbon-based drink with tamarind and lime, and I enjoyed the Spicy Maple Margarita; let’s just say maple gives agave a run for its money because this was, with no exaggeration, the best spicy marg I’ve had to date.

After such a lavish spread of apps, we excitedly awaited our mains: the Kimchi Dog and a Nashville Spicy Chicken Sando. The former was a spicy take on your typical hot dog, starring kimchi from Chi Kitchen in Pawtucket. The batter on the fried chicken was exquisite in taste and texture, and worth every “I really shouldn’t” bite.

Since our visit, we’ve been raving to our East Bay friends and family, and our tagline has become “Purslane is worth crossing bridges for!”

Cooking on the Homestead Farm-to-table family dinners fueled this outdoors enthusiast’s dream of writing a cookbook Prior to Kimberly Ragosta and her brood living on more than six acres of land with a river running through it, back when writing and publishing a cookbook was just a distant dream, and before three of her five children were born, the now-author was an egg washer at Pat’s Pastured in East Greenwich. The experience would shape her understanding of how important it is to sustain and uplift a local food system.

“It wasn’t until 2021 that I had a great idea,” shares Ragosta. With a growing family and passion for cooking farm-fresh meals from scratch, she started reaching out to farmers to establish a symbiotic relationship, bringing home fresh meat and produce in exchange for recipe development. With the harvests, she would create and photograph recipes the farm could use on their websites, blogs, and social media. “This was a win-win for both of us and an amazing blessing to my family.”

Under the moniker of Little House in the Forest, Ragosta shares recipes and homesteading life on Instagram. Devising everything from creamy pasta with wild-hunted turkey to hearty stews and bakes, each meal features ingredients from Rhode Island fields and pastures. “I have always wanted to create a cookbook since I started developing recipes over 16 years ago,” she reflects.

This fall, the fruits of her labor reached bookshelves in the form of A Time to Gather, a whopping 560-page cookbook filled with over 500 farm-to-table recipes that Ragosta has developed over the years, published by Stillwater River Publications. “It was the hardest project I have ever worked on in my life, but I am so proud of the book that I have created,” says Ragosta. “I like nothing more than immersing myself in the local food community and sharing recipes with people.”

THANKSGIVING TURKEY & GRAVY From campfire cooking to everyday meals, Ragosta’s recipes span the gamut of farmto-table feasting – and the perfect turkey is no exception. Here’s what will be cooking in the Ragosta household on Thanksgiving, followed by a game of football in the yard!

•

1 whole turkey

•

2 sticks of butter at room temperature, divided

•

Bundle of fresh parsley, tarragon, and thyme

•

1 Tbsp each of chopped fresh parsley, tarragon, and thyme

•

Salt and pepper to taste

•

4 cups chicken stock

FOR GRAVY: •

Pan juices from cooked turkey

•

4 Tbsp butter

•

½ cup flour

Additional materials: Twine, scissors, tin foil, and roasting pan

1.

On the day of cooking, after defrosting the turkey in the refrigerator for 3 days (this worked for a 15-pound bird), preheat oven to 425ºF.

2. Rinse turkey inside and out, making sure to discard giblets. Pat dry. Put half a stick of butter, the bundle of herbs, and a generous amount of salt and pepper inside the cavity.

3. Mix 1 stick of butter with the chopped herbs. Massage the turkey with the herb butter mixture all over; sprinkle salt and pepper.

4. Loosely tie the legs together with twine, place turkey breast side up in an oval roasting pan, and roast in the oven for 20 minutes. Turn heat down to 350ºF and roast for 30 more minutes. Add 1 cup of broth on top of turkey and 1 tablespoon of butter in the roasting pan after each 30-minute interval of cooking. Do this repeatedly until the meaty part of the thigh reaches about 165ºF. If the turkey is browning too much you can cover it with foil.

5. Remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest with a foil tent for 30 minutes before slicing. Reserve pan juices for gravy.

6. Prepare gravy by melting butter over medium heat in a skillet. Whisk in flour to create a roux (flour and fat cooked together to thicken the sauce). Slowly whisk in pan juices. Keep whisking over medium heat until a gravy is born. Serve with turkey, and enjoy!

Note: A 15-pound bird took about 3 hours in my oven, but let the temperature of the meat be your guide.

Feeling good with fresh smoothies in PVD Providing healthy, fresh, and delicious food is the goal at In The Pink, a new addition to the thriving Thayer Street foodie scene. Named after a phrase that means “feeling great,” it’s no wonder owner Chris Cancel’s shop, tucked in a small plaza across from the East Side bus tunnel, sees customers leaving in good spirits.

“The smoothies and bowls are by far the highest selling items; people really love our iced coffee, too,” says Cancel, who expects to be brewing warmer drinks like hot chocolate and lattes as winter approaches. Menu highlights also include vegan options, oatmeal bowls, cold-pressed juice, and protein-packed treats.

“Healthy eating is especially important given some of the other options on Thayer Street,” says Cancel. “You’re going to feel a lot better when you leave. After an acai bowl, with fresh fruit toppings and chia seeds, you’ll feel cleaner, not like you need to go lay down and take a nap.” There’s space to dine in, although take-out between classes is more popular among many of In The Pink’s Brown University clientele.

Italian-style cafe opens in Narragansett Galleria Dolce Café opened in July and aims to provide an authentic Italian experience in Mariner Square, along with contributing to South County’s local art scene. “We do traditional Neapolitan. We offer breakfast and a quick bite to eat for lunch,” says owner Sabrina Labbadia. “We also display works from local artists and most of the art on the wall space here is for sale.”

The menu includes toasts, paninis, smoothies, salads, and Italian pastries. “We serve a frittata,

a 20-egg omelet with sausage, a vegetable, and potato every day. We make Italian desserts including crostata di nonna, a traditional openfaced pie with weaving on top, and fruit filling on the inside,” adds Labbadia. Guests can also enjoy biscuits prepared in house, and other baked goods from Scialo Brothers Bakery on Federal Hill. One of the newest nightspots on the East Bay is Myrtle, a hip cocktail lounge and performance space located across the street from Jeff’s Pizza in East Providence. Inside the old Tool Crib building on a residential corner, Myrtle opened in September. “I’m finding most people coming in are really enjoying our cocktails, so we’re going to continue focusing on spirits,” says co-owner Natalie VanLandingham, who opened the business with her husband. “We also have a pretty large selection of domestic and craft beers and some interesting wines.

It’s our mission to use as many local distillers, brewers, and distributors as possible.”

Drinks are only part of the experience at Myrtle. Beyond the traditional bar, the venue is filled with an eclectic array of vintage second-hand furniture and wall hangings.
