THE SHARING SEASON From past to present, Nikommo traditions have changed, but the giving spirit of the Narragansett holiday remains On December 2, Tomaquag Museum will host its 64th annual Nikommo at the Jonnycake Center of Westerly. Chrystal Mars Baker, the museum’s education manager who is responsible for planning the free event, describes it as an open house. “There will be an art market where people can shop and support local Indigenous artists, and there will be stories by Indigenous authors playing on a video loop for all to enjoy,” she says. Narragansett people have taken part in Nikommo celebrations since time immemorial. Baker compares the original means of celebrating Nikommo to a “giveaway.” “Historically, it involved providing furs, tools, and food – anything needed to run a home – to elders and others who could no longer provide for themselves,” she explains. “The community took care of their needs to make sure no one went without.” Traditionally members of the Narragansett tribe participated in Nikommo feasts many times throughout the year as part of their 13 thanksgiving celebrations, one recognized for each moon cycle. “People gathered at these thanksgiving ceremonies to show gratitude for Creator’s gifts,” Baker explained. “Drumming and dancing was

very much a part of these ceremonies, and at many of our thanksgivings, a Nikommo could occur as well.” As Narragansett people began to assimilate with Christians and be influenced by Christian culture, they condensed their many Nikommo celebrations into one that takes place during the Christmas season. This year, in the full spirit of providing for others, those who attend Tomaquag’s free event are asked to donate a toy, book, coat, or other gift appropriate for a child. “The museum will give these items to the Jonnycake Center so that they can share them with Indigenous families in need,” says Baker. The center will organize a display of items so that parents who may not be able to afford Christmas gifts for their children can make selections.
“I’m very thankful to be born into a culture that appreciates the gift of sharing,” says Baker. “Today, many Native artists depend on events like Nikommo to supplement their income, and I look forward to being among them and providing the opportunity through Tomaquag’s events to display and sell their beautiful creations.” Shoppers may find items such as beadwork, handmade tools, photographs, prints, baskets, and corn husk dolls at the market. “We’re in a smaller space than last year,” says Baker. “Some of our artists will have to share tables, but sharing is what Nikommo is all about!” Nikommo is open to the public and takes place 12-4pm on December 2. For more details, visit TomaquagMuseum.org.

Stern Warning from RI ACLU Prompts Changes to Weekapaug Fire District Website The Westerly-based fire district, a taxing entity with government authorities but no fire department, had blocked information on its website from public view If you went on the website weekapaug.org for the first time earlier this year and sought access to information about the Weekapaug Fire District’s facilities and services, you were asked to provide an email and await a response to gain sign-in access to the website. And if you aren’t a Weekapaug property owner, there’s a good chance you never received permission to view the information shielded by the quasi-municipal

Brown said the link takes users to a voluntary list of names and contact information for people who live in the fire district. In 2021, The Public’s Radio sought a website account with the fire district and didn’t receive a response. When a follow-up email was sent to the fire district’s administrator, Jeanne McAndrew, McAndrew sent a response saying, “Oh gosh, I’m sorry. I did not see that email. I will check further.” The Weekapaug Fire District never provided an account to The Public’s Radio. The fire district did share an index to its log-in protected website in response to a Rhode Island Access to Public Records Act request sent that year. The Weekapaug Fire District is among several South County fire districts chartered by the General Assembly that do not provide direct fire services but do own coastal property. The district restricts public access to two Weekapaug beaches
– Fenway Beach and the shoreline at the Quonochontaug Barrier Beach. The district is currently involved in two separate shoreline rights-of-way cases before the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, as it seeks to continue to keep the public off of the 1.7-mile barrier beach in the summer months. The district claims it is the legal owner of an access path known as Spring Avenue and does not need to let the public access the barrier beach through what it claims is its land. The district says a separate question about beach access by way of the Sand Trail going down the center of the barrier beach was settled in a 1997 agreement between the fire district and town of Westerly, and shouldn’t be before CRMC. entity. That’s different today. A visitor to the website can now read about the fire district’s beaches, its “veteran security force,” the recipients of an award named for a watchman who saved four people in Weekapaug during the Hurricane of 1938, and a theater camp for kids where “[p]reference is given to Weekapaug residents.” The change comes after the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union sent the Weekapaug Fire District a letter dated Sept. 19, telling district officials, “Frankly, we have never before come across a government entity that hides information on its website from the general public, nor can we conceive of any lawful basis for doing so.” The ACLU told the Weekapaug Fire District that information on the website “clearly is public and should therefore be readily accessible,” and that “it is unclear to us what purpose this secrecy serves.” Rhode Island ACLU Executive Director Steven Brown said in an interview last week his group was considering taking legal action if the fire district did not change its website. But in an email (on Tuesday), Brown indicated he was satisfied after speaking with an attorney for the fire district on Monday. “In response to our letter, he instructed the fire district to open up the site, which … they have now done,” Brown said. “A small victory for open government in the Alice in Wonderland world of fire districts.” The Weekapaug Fire District did not respond to an email seeking comment about the website and the ACLU’s objections to the old settings. The weekapaug.org website still has a button at the top of the page that says “Log in.”

BUDDY Everyone is in search of a buddy, right? Well, this Buddy is searching for you, too! This year-old mixedbreed pup is medium sized and handsome as they come. Buddy is playful with other dogs, loves people, walks great on a leash, and would be a loving companion to the human parent willing to give this furbaby a home!
TIMMY Smart and eager to please, Timmy’s only goal is to be the best boy! This medium-sized two-year-old Pit mixed breed knows all of his basic commands and then some, from waiting patiently for a treat to some doggie agility skills. Timmy has a gorgeous brindle coat, golden eyes, and big smile. He’s best suited for an adult home that will keep him active and learning.

PANDA This lovable boy resembles his namesake – Panda is a charming black-and-white tuxedo cat. He’s FIV-positive, but that doesn’t stop him from living his life to the fullest! He even likes other friendly felines, so a household who already has a FIV-positive cat looking for a friend would be a great match for this loyal kitty companion looking for a furever home. Fun
Bargain Store We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-in-the-wall spot that locals love. Email or tag us on social media using #RhodyGem to suggest yours, and we might just feature it! What it is: A discount store and sample outlet that carries luxury items for less.
What makes it a Rhody Gem? Fun came to Rhode Island last November when the Stonington-based discount store expanded into Westerly from Connecticut. Frugal shoppers can enjoy finding everything from women’s clothing and accessories to spa goods, stationery, and home decor, along with toys, games, and puzzles – often 30-50 percent below retail prices – with inventory revolving daily. Owner Kyle Anderson’s secret sauce? “Long-standing relationships with companies who offer us their high-end first quality, overstocks, and closeouts. It’s like an outlet store and Nordstrom’s had a baby! Because we are Fun, we don’t mark these items up three or four times like other boutiques,” explains Anderson. Fun also offers parties where the host and at least eight friends can sip bubbly, shop, and experience even better discounts throughout the entire store.

Keeping the Lights On Three mission-driven organizations focused on helping neighbors in need live their best lives
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD FOOD PANTRY In his depth of experience working in food pantries, Donver Gardiner realized the need for nutrition was greater than many of these organizations were able to meet. With this in mind, in January 2023, he and six colleagues opened Your Neighborhood Food Pantry on Branch Avenue to serve Providence’s North End. “There is another food pantry in this neighborhood,” explains Gardiner, who serves as operations director. “It’s on the bus line, so people can access it, but it’s only open one day a week. Your Neighborhood Food Pantry is on the bus line, and it’s one of the few food pantries in Rhode Island that’s open three days a week.” Your Neighborhood Food Pantry also shares a block with the Boys and Girls Club and The San Miguel School. “We’ve reached out to both places to see how we can support their kids,” Gardiner says. “We’re trying to talk to different organizations in the neighborhood to let them know we’re here to help them.” The pantry is a member agency of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, which stocks the majority of their shelf space, but they also rely in part on Hope’s Harvest RI to fill the facility with fresh produce. “Over the last six or seven years, I’ve seen the need increase,” says Gardiner. “Every time I open the doors, I see new people who have never visited a food pantry before.

With higher-than-average inflation rates putting many individuals and families into budgetary corners, sometimes the best way to help is to start small. Many Rhode Island nonprofits are doing just that by focusing resources around small communities of neighbors, and although the need has always been great, over the last few years it’s become greater, with lengthy waitlists for help growing. With the holiday season upon us, those with the ability to give back can look to a few worthy causes that do a lot with a little – and despite difficulties of their own, are hoping to make positive impacts in their neighborhoods.

Just yesterday, there were 18 new faces.” He attributes this to the rising cost of food and stagnant wages. “People just aren’t making enough money.” Your Neighborhood Food Pantry gratefully accepts food donations from the community, but cash donations literally help keep the lights on. “We have to keep paying our rent and bills so we can be here for the people who need us,” Gardiner says.
NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS For many, just staying in one spot can be a challenge, and it’s a struggle that Susan Jaquith, board president of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, is intimately familiar with. Her nonprofit was established in 2012 with the goal of reducing homelessness in South County by repairing homes free of charge. “We started out as a church organization helping people with home repairs
two weekends a year, but we quickly realized that wasn’t enough,” says Jaquith. When she retired, she used her new-found free time to help expand the organization as a way to give back to the community. “Our mission is to keep structures livable and safe so that people can remain in their homes,” she says, describing everything from roof replacement projects and handrail installations to plumbing and electrical repairs.

“We’re currently installing a furnace for someone who has been without heat and hot water since July,” Jaquith says. The organization sometimes also sets up temporary structures, like a wheelchair ramp, so that a homeowner can be discharged from the hospital. “When they’re done with the ramp, we’ll take it back and store it for reuse,” she says. Jaquith acknowledges that her organization has a waiting list. “We do as much as we can with what we have, but while we work on four or five projects at a time, we often have a backlog of 12.” This summer’s
repair work for the group. While cash donations certainly help Neighbors Helping Neighbors fulfill its mission, so do like-minded partners. “Much of the work we do requires a licensed, insured contractor,” she says. “We find that when these contractors meet the homeowners, they develop a real heart for the work and often donate a job a year or give us a break on labor.” Although their volunteers can paint a wall after a patch job, Jaquith says she would love to have a general handyman or carpenter on her list of volunteers who

SOUTH COUNTY IS THE PLACE TO BE FOR MAKING MERRY IN DECEMBER BY THE EDITORS
I
t’s the holiday season and across southern Rhode Island there’s a feeling of magic in the salty air! Local shops, venues, restaurants, and more have planned all kinds of experiences to get neighbors in festive moods, from bustling parties and street fairs, to creating gifts and treats at workshops, to annual performances, and so much more. And for those little believers, we’ve called out where to spot that jolly old elf by marking listings with SANTA TRACKER so you don’t miss “one of his helpers” in the wild.

All is Bright A homeowner pulls out all the stops to make a magical Christmas for her family “At one point I had 50 nativities, 75 Santas, and one nine-foot Christmas tree. I now have five nine-foot trees, eight seven-foot trees, one nativity, and four Santas,” says Rosemary Heydt. No matter how the math shakes out, one thing is for sure – she enjoys decking the halls, setting the table, and making things merry and bright. “I like every year to be different and over the top, so the style is always changing,” she says with a warm smile. If her last name is familiar, it’s likely due to her husband William, an artist known for capturing the people and places of Newport via vibrant watercolor paintings. His beloved work can be found all over the City by the Sea with prints, paintings, and his book Working Newport displayed in shops, cafes, and hotels. For 18 years, the couple has lived in Newport’s Historic Hill neighborhood in a

house that dates back to 1836. Heydt relays that the home’s original owner, Captain Augustus Littlefield, asked his builder to design an authentic copy of a villa that he’d seen during a trip to Southern Italy. Inside, the Heydts have outfitted interiors with an eclectic blend of furnishings and accents, adhering to neither a villa nor coastal vibe. “We have a lot of different art throughout our home, and a life-size horse made out of junk
in our entrance hall. Not very New England!” The Heydts have three grown children, a grandchild, and dog Luna. “I decorate my home for my family. They are the reasons I do what I do,” says Heydt. “Last year I decided to decorate each nine-foot tree for each family member. My husband Bill and son Eric’s tree was decorated with all gold ornaments; my daughter Bernadette and her husband Andrea’s tree had all white

The family tree was a collection of ornaments from when the kids were young up to today. “I am very happy that my children are always home for Christmas,” says Heydt. “The room I enjoy the most is the dining room, where the white Christmas tree is. It is where we sit and have friends and family over for dinner, so basically it is the heart of our home.”

Give the Gift of Adventure From forging to floating, five experiences that can’t be regifted No one needs more stuff. Rather than wrapping the latest trendy gadget and risk it being banished to the closet or putting a bow on yet another pine-scented candle doomed to be regifted, try something different this year by giving an experience that will create memories to last a lifetime. From creative or relaxing to physically challenging, here are five ideas for truly unique presents.
CREATE A WORK OF ART For the more artistically inclined, a class at the Steel Yard is a great way to help someone express themselves creatively. Class offerings include welding, blacksmithing, jewelry making, or ceramics. Skilled instructors walk students through the process, who leave with a gift they made with their own hands. Plus the Steel Yard is a nonprofit so you’re supporting a great cause. Providence, TheSteelYard.org PERFECT THAT THROW Toss your cares away with a trip to the Axe Bar at R1 Indoor Karting. With a full bar and 10 state-of-the-art throwing lanes, your gift will set the stage for excitement. If axe throwing isn’t their thing, your recipient can throw darts, go karting on an asphalt track, play games at the arcade, or solve the puzzle that is TimeMission, a time machine challenge in a portal! Lincoln, R1IndoorKarting.com CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN Your gift-giving is sure to reach new heights when you deliver a day pass to Rock Spot Climbing. With three Rhode Island locations, you can be bouldering or belaying in Lincoln,

Providence, and Peace Dale – a great way to get moving and grooving after all those big holiday meals. Look for special events and sessions, too. Send someone up on their own or join them for a wild bonding experience. RockSpotClimbing.com FLOAT YOUR CARES AWAY Give the gift of peace and quiet via a float in a tranquil salt water pod – 850 pounds of epsom salt and 10 inches of water heated to skin temperature. Float RI offers this heated anti-gravity environment that relieves stress and tension, leaving floaters refreshed and relaxed. Other wellness services include halotherapy, infrared sauna, and therapeutic massage. Warwick, FloatRI.com

GET SMASHED Everyone needs to let loose once in a while and Smash ‘N’ Splash, Rhode Island’s first rage room, is a great way to do it. Choose between smashing – literally breaking fragile items with a variety of instruments – and splashing, which means splattering glow-in-the dark paint everywhere in sight. You can even plan a party for small groups. For smash sessions, participants must be over 13 with a parent present. West Warwick, SmashNSplashRI.com

The Relaxed Host From cheese boards to florals, be party-ready all season long with a bit of outsourcing Entertaining can be a scary word until the a-ha moment when you realize most any get-together can be as simple or extravagant as is comfortable for the host. If you enjoy going all out with food and decor, have at it! If you want to make things pretty for a small group with prepared foods and minimal effort, that’s great, too. The bottom line is setting aside a special time to spend with people who matter to you; the less you need to do on party day, the more fun you’re sure to have.
T H E C H EC K L I ST DATE: It seems that people start to get busy with commitments earlier and earlier, so try to select a date and time for your gathering that seems realistic and gives plenty of advance notice.
Metallics add shine and style
THEME: This can simply be a color or food type on which to base other ideas on. Similar to a child’s character-driven party – once a theme is decided, the ideas flow! BUDGET: Based on how many people you’ll have, figure out what you can spend. Consider keeping things affordable with potluck, something large and simple to easily feed a crowd (say, a pot pie) and BYOB options.
Woodland-inspired accents like candles, votives, linens, and more are evergreen pieces that can be put to use all year
PREP: If there are things you can do in advance, do them. Mix dip and let it set in the fridge, chop veggies for crudite and clean it all up, and get oven use out of the way to avoid heating up the place. SHOP: Leave what you don’t want to cook or bake to the pros. PLAN: Create a fluid timeline for the event: guests arrive, set aside time to chat over apps, plan an activity, etc. GOAL: Be sitting dressed, ready, and bored waiting for the first knock at the door. 64

TIP: After the party, use florals to decorate flat surfaces like mantels and shelves
Greenery and flowers elevate the occasion and add interest to the table. The centerpiece, housed in a gold compote, is filled with garden roses, lisianthus, and Japanese anemones. Raspberry thistle, hypericum berries, and broomcorn lend texture; sticks were added as a nod to the season. The garland is a mix of Italian ruscus and a few varieties of eucalyptus.

LEAVE FAMILY DINNER TO A PRO Narragansett meal delivery biz takes care of everyday meals, from fruit salad to dessert December summons the family to the hearth with the tantalizing smells of holiday feasts, from grandma’s brisket to fresh cranberry sauce, but on the ordinary days in between, pleas for help in the kitchen may be more often met with crickets. Korin Aceto would argue it’s these everyday meals that foster essential face-time around the table. “The vision for A Taste of Time started with the intent of helping busy families get a healthy meal on the table in minimal time,” shares Aceto of her Narragansett-based meal prep and catering company. “Research shows that sitting down together as a family to eat dinner has many benefits, including healthier eating habits and helping prevent mental illness.” Aceto’s own love of cooking blossomed when preparing meals for her grandmother. “It became one of the only things I found peace and happiness doing,” she says. “The fact that I was actually good at it was an added bonus!” Seeking a way to pursue it full-time – while navigating physical disabilities that made it difficult to work in a fast-paced restaurant setting – she built a following posting pictures of meals she prepared for people on social media, and rented a commercial kitchen in 2020 to open A Taste of Time. Aceto hopes to one day create a handicap-accessible commissary kitchen, explaining, “I think there must be more people in my position who could benefit from a little extra help to achieve their dreams of working in a commercial kitchen.” But for now, busy households can relish in the hearty and healthy comfort dishes on the menu this winter, including stuffed acorn squash, soups, stews, strombolis, and more – all perfect for savoring the everyday. Ordering windows are every Wednesday through Saturday morning for Tuesday pickup or delivery. To find out if you’re in service range, enter your zipcode online, or reach out to make special arrangements. Dam Tasty North Kingstown’s newest destination for pleasing pub fare and sports vibes
For classic American bites, a hand-selected list of craft beers, and a feel-good family atmosphere, it doesn’t get much better than Thirsty Beaver Hometown Pub & Grub, a local mainstay with not one but four locations. My boyfriend and I stopped by their newest restaurant in North Kingstown – easy to spot along Frenchtown Road by its wood-frame aesthetic – on a Wednesday evening. Inside, the spacious dining area features garage door walls that can open up when the weather is warm, but during winter, it’s the place to flock to catch your favorite sports team in action, with 10 TV screens

lining the walls, broadcasting a few different games. As the name would suggest, the pub’s other draw is the expansive bar. The owners of Thirsty Beaver pride themselves on their wide selection of beers – with 32 brews on draft – wines, and a dozen cocktails that rotate twice a year. My boyfriend opted for a draft beer, and I ordered the Angriest Orchard Cocktail, a spin on a margarita but with a cinnamon rim, cinnamon simple syrup, and apple cider sour mix that keeps the cozy fall vibes going strong into winter. Before ordering entrees, we couldn’t skip
on an appetizer – the punny names echoing the sports bar theme on the “Beaver Snacks” menu grabbed our attention, and we ordered a round of Fry Me to the Moon with Bases Loaded, a bed of fries covered in cheddar jack cheese, bacon, scallions, and sour cream. The plate came to our table steaming hot with delicious crunchy long-cut fries. For patrons having trouble deciding what to order, I would suggest taking a look at the Staff

Must-Try Items Dam Good Reuben ($13) House-braised corned beef, thousand island dressing, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and grilled rye bread Frenchtown Twist ($13) Crispy chicken, buffalo honey mustard, cheddar jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, brioche roll
led my boyfriend to a menu MVP, the aptly named Dam Good Rueben. The sandwich was filled with a generous serving of housebraised corned beef, thousand island dressing, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese on toasted rye bread. Though reluctant to give up even a bite of this tasty sandwich, he indulged me – and I was wowed by the perfect balance of melty cheese and tender corned beef. For my main course, the Frenchtown Twist – a playful nod to the NK location’s street address – was a crispy chicken sandwich topped with buffalo honey mustard, cheddar jack cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Served on a warm, soft brioche bun, this huge sandwich brought the perfect amount of crunch to every bite, with just a touch of heat from the honey mustard. Both meals came with a side of fries and tater tots, a mouth-watering pairing for our sandwiches. We were too full to enjoy dessert, but that didn’t stop me from ordering something to bring home. The Churrific – fried churros – were covered in cinnamon sugar and chocolate sauce, paired with vanilla ice cream. The tantalizing dessert was still both warm and cold – and soon disappeared – the moment we got home. For approachable, fun fare, and rotating menu specials to keep things interesting, the Thirsty Beaver is an easy year-round favorite (with plenty of gluten-free options, too), whether you’re a sports fan, French fry enthusiast, or both!

Savoring the Experience The wine aficionado behind East Greenwich’s destination for finding the perfect bottle for any occasion
From sharing advice on “Getting Help With Wine Choices” in the Wall Street Journal to appearing in the pages of copious regional publications, both as the subject and as an author, it’s easy to surmise that Jessica Granatiero is a resource for all things wine and spirits. She recently published Notes to Savor, a journal that was inspired by her own love of writing – and sitting down with Granatiero, it’s clear the most natural thing for her to talk about is wine itself.

Along with her oenophilia, Granatiero’s genuine humility resonates – although it would be easy for her to boast about the circuitous path that led her from working in public relations in Washington DC to opening a boutique wine store that is now a premier destination for wine, beer, and spirits in New England. Granatiero’s long-standing passion for wine led her and her husband Nino to found The Savory Grape in East Greenwich,
then a 600-square-foot store on Main Street centered around the customer experience. “We had a vision for a small wine shop, boutique in nature – we really wanted it to be about the experience and to create a culture around wine,” says Granatiero. When The Savory Grape first opened 17 years ago, she thought of it as the “Starbucks of wine.” At that time, Starbucks sought to create a culture around the experience of coffee,

BOTTLED BLISS Providing advice on pairings is one of Granatiero’s fortes, and she’s eager to share three of her holiday picks that will be featured in the store this month:
BEAUJOLAIS This very light red wine comes from the Beaujolais region of France, south of Burgundy. Made from Gamay grapes, it’s a fruitforward wine without being sweet. “This pairs well with a myriad of dishes you’ll find on the holiday table,” Granatiero says.
FRANCIACORTA No celebration is complete without popping open a bottle of this dry Italian sparkling wine from Mirabella winery, consisting of a blend of different grapes that is one of Granatiero’s favorites.
RIESLING
and she wanted to do the same for wine. “We wanted people to be able to meander around the store, tasting wine. We started a wine of the month club where we’d feature a new wine, complete with details about the vineyard and tasting notes.” Even the way the couple organized their bottles was unique: rather than by country or grape varietal, they categorized wines by body style, such as medium- or full-bodied. This encouraged customers to try different, lesser-known selections. “Oftentimes people would come in and say, ‘I like a lightstyle wine, like a pinot grigio,’” Granatiero

says, “and we could direct them to an entire selection they might like to try.” Although her formal study of wine was through The Wine & Spirit Education Trust, Granatiero credits the majority of her knowledge to the store itself, a “baptism by fire” where she learned from doing. She made a point to taste each bottle they carried so she could better describe them to customers. She also credits her expertise to her travels throughout Europe and the US. “Some people like to golf – I like to travel,” she says with a laugh. She particularly loves the Piedmont region in northwest Italy. Seeing how wine is made

in these small, family-owned wineries has developed her palate. “When you see where the grapes are grown and under what conditions, the process of how they’re picked and crushed, where they’re stored – you begin to learn that the way wine is made influences how it tastes,” Granatiero explains. One of the most remarkable things about The Savory Grape – now a 10,000-squarefoot store located in the East Greenwich plaza with Dave’s Marketplace – is that even with an expanded inventory, Granatiero and her team still make it a point to taste every wine. “It’d be doing our customers a

Always a classic choice, Granatiero recommends the Dr. G, a dry riesling with peach and apricot aromatics. “It has a tiny spritz to it, and really marries well with cranberry sauce and stuffing with sausage. It has a light fruitiness, but enough acid to cut through the fat of gravy.”

disservice not to,” she explains. Despite its changes and expansion, the focal point of The Savory Grape continues to be customer experience. Granatiero and her team are welcoming and approachable, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. “We enjoy working with clients – it makes us feel really good knowing we’ve helped someone find something they love.”

Classic sandwiches in Narragansett A new sandwich shop in Narragansett is taking a back-to-basics approach by focusing on their specialty: delicious sandwiches. “We keep the menu pretty tight, with about eight or nine sandwiches,” says Philip Dimin, who opened The Salty General in August, after moving to Rhode Island with his family. The shop is popular among locals and URI students, and a

welcome addition to the north end of the seaside community. Menu highlights include “the Roast Beef, which has horseradish aioli, cheddar cheese, pickled onions, tomato, and arugula,” says Dimin. “Another is the Calabrese, which is basically our Italian, with a Calabrian chili aioli so it’s got a little heat.” Dimin’s personal favorite is
the Mortadella Fritto on 5/8-inch bread, layered with provolone, salt and vinegar chips, and iceberg lettuce, which he describes as “crunchy and delicious.” “A sandwich is not rocket science, but a sandwich with a little extra thought, with really good bread and a really good sauce can be special,” says Dimin. PVD biscuit shop opens West End brick-and-mortar If fried chicken and hot honey between two fresh-baked biscuit halves is your style of breakfast, a popular pop-up’s new brick-andmortar will give you something worth waking up early for. Formerly occupying The Tailor Shop space on Broadway every weekend at brunch time since 2020, Irregardless Biscuits is stretching their legs in the former Kitchen, a few blocks away on Carpenter Street. Owned by James Dean (of Slow Rhode fame) and Joe Hafner, the southern-style biscuit spot is led by head baker Erin Richer with an aim to “satisfy a taste of home,” says Hafner. “We are going to continue to offer the breakfast biscuit menu with a few additions, as well as adding some evening hours with new menu items we will announce when we open,” shares Hafner, estimating, at press time, a late November opening. “We had a lot of fun at the space on Broadway and we want to carry over that fun fast-paced atmosphere we had there.” Providence, @irregardlessbiscuit – Abbie Lahmers
A wine for sipping with pizza expands statewide Pizza and wine: a match made in heaven. One Rhode Island company is embracing this love affair by offering a new canned beverage called Pizza Wine. The lightly carbonated drink is expanding to restaurants around the state after being piloted earlier this year when chef Robert Andreozzi and mixologist Jesse Hedberg began serving the bubbly beverage at Pizza Marvin in Providence. The team partnered with Elizabeth McDonnell and the branding duo of Alaina Andreozzi and Christiana Guzman. “The wine is made from grapes grown in the Finger Lakes (NY) region, called De Chaunac – a really beautiful, juicy, delicious, easy-to-drink wine,” says Andreozzi. “People who are newer to drinking wine have really responded to Pizza Wine; it’s been an entry point into wine for them,” says Andreozzi. “Reviews have also been strong from industry people, who may be more skeptical of canned wine. We‘ve seen positive feedback across the board.” Look for Pizza Wine expanding into area bars, restaurants, and liquor stores. ItsPizzaWine.com – Ken Abrams
