This is what your friends and neighbors have to say about our team. Word of mouth is the best advertising! “After going someplace else, I felt I had to return to Kenneth Cote. I missed the whole experience of this salon. I appreciate the goodwill amongst the staff and clientele. Over the years with parental illness, deaths, everyday stress, etc., coming for my monthly appointments has been my needed place to escape and spoil myself. I’m very grateful to all there who have added to this most important caring time.. from those who answer the phone, to those who have delivered services over the past 10+ years.” -Gail S. “When my stylist had to cancel due to family illness, the front desk was able to get a foil appointment with another stylist for the very same day and time and she did an excellent job.” - Jo A. “Always a friendly atmosphere no matter what time or day I am there. All the stylists are very professional.” - Patti R. “Great service..always on time.” - Pat J. “Wonderful! When I walk in I feel like I’m with family. Everyone is so friendly, sincere and talented! I’d recommend Kenneth Cote to anyone!” - Cibby G. “From beginning to end, Kenneth Cote Salon is amazing!” - Laura F. “Since I discovered Kenneth Cote Renewal Center, there’s no more trauma when it’s haircut time!” - Trent F.

Take A Bite Out of Winter You know, if there’s one thing about February that’s really great, it’s that you can hibernate without guilt. Don’t feel like doing anything on the weekend? That couch and that mug of hot cocoa sound pretty cozy. Don’t feel like going for a run? You can’t anyway – the roads are too icy. Don’t feel like cooking? You don’t have to – not with this month’s cover story on delicious comfort foods. From gooey macaroni and cheese to heartwarming soups to belly-filling casseroles, February is all about the best way to the heart…
through the stomach. So when winter has you totally down, head out for dinner and think warm thoughts. After all, you can’t live on Valentine’s Day chocolate for the entire month... or can you?
Please relay our compliments to Grace Lentini for her professional photography skills and to Andrea McHugh for her writing skills [“Let the Sunshine In,” January 2014] while covering our home. Obviously there were many challenges and options on how to best describe
our home. Andrea’s script was perfect. We fully appreciate her descriptive and intuitive abilities. We enjoy our home now, more than ever. And of course, we enjoy our home, but Grace’s photos reminded us of why. Thanks for a wonderful experience. Connie and Bob Dobrowski

On the Silver Screen We’re proud to once again sponsor the Providence Children’s Film Festival, February 13-23. This is the festival’s fifth year, and it’s better than ever, with film screenings, educational activities and other special events. The RISD Museum, the RISD Auditorium and the Cable Car Cinema (all convenient walking distance from each other) will serve as festival venues, and dozens of feature films and shorts will be screened. We would love to say that this partnership is about our deep and abiding investment in children, but if we’re being honest it’s just that we’re excited about Wolf Children, an animated film that will appeal to fans of Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki. What can we say? We just like wolves. Stay tuned to Providence Monthly’s Facebook page (facebook.com/providenconline) for your chance to win tickets to screenings at the RISD Auditorium. Visit www.providencechildrensfilmfestival.org for the full schedule and ticket info.

The Misquamicut Beach Luau
Swirl, Sniff, Sip The art of fabulous wine appreciation in East Greenwich You say diva like it’s a bad thing… but in the immortal words of Miss Noxeema Jackson in Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, “Your approval is neither desired nor required.” Unless, of course, you’re talking about which wines you like and don’t like at 1149’s monthly Wine Divas event. Every month, divas-in-training gather at the East Greenwich restaurant for an evening of delicious food, fabulousness and wine appreciation. Local and national wine experts are guest experts for the night, and pair wines to the chef’s four-course dinner. Before each course, guests get a primer on the wine, including tasting notes. The event happens once a month, and sells out fast, so make sure to make a reservation. February’s Wine Divas takes place on February 4. It’s a ladies-only evening, so leave the men at home, and go toast your diva self with your girlfriends. 1149 Division Street, Warwick/East Greenwich line. 884-1149, www.elevenfortynine.com -Julie Tremaine

Castelli and Shnapir at the 2014 U.S. Championships
Photo: Jay Adeff/U.S. Figure Skating
A Rhode Island Figure Skater Goes For The Gold Marissa Castelli, Rhode Island’s only Olympian heading to Sochi this month, works as a pair skater, performing choreographed ice skating routines with her partner, Massachusetts-based Simon Shnapir. The two began performing together in 2006, and have gone on to win the 2013 Four Continents bronze and the 2009 World Junior bronze and twice earned the title of U.S. National Champions (2013, 2014). Their latest competition, the 2014 U.S. Championships, saw the pair perform to Thomas Newman’s “Skyfall,” in which Castelli daringly attempted to pull off a quadruple salchow (four airborne rotations). As both a Rhode Island resident and a student at CCRI, Castelli represents the best of her little state. And we’re rooting for you, Castelli. Give them hell. -Dale J Rappaneau, Jr

A scene from the half-acre Pequot Village recreation
Digging up history The Mashantucket Pequot Museum blends past with present By Dale J Rappaneau, Jr
In 1965, Intel co-founder
Gordon E. Moore proposed that technology (and by extension, life) develops at an exponential rate. Faster processing speeds lead to faster productivity lines, which lead to faster development times, which lead to faster creations, faster computers, faster this, faster that, faster faster faster. Everything becomes faster. It’s all part of this exponential acceleration. But acceleration, by its very nature, demands attention. People focus on the road ahead, searching for the next big gadget, app or social trend. Which creates a problem: staying so focused on the now causes people to forget about how all of this - all of this exponential growth - only came about because of what came before. So while yesterday’s road may have been forgotten, without it there would not be today’s destination. The further away the road, though, the more difficult it is to find a definitive connection between the distant past and today’s accelerated future. And more often than not it requires a team of professional archaeologists, excessive financial backing and a passion for history that’s rare in today’s forward-focused environment. Thankfully there exists a (somewhat) local establishment with all of those traits: the Mashantucket Pequot
Museum and Research Center, located near Foxwoods. Owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, the very same individuals behind the nearby world’s largest casino, this 15-year-old museum spares no expense for preserving and presenting Native American history. And it’s evident right from the museum’s architectural design. Currently the museum’s glass and steel building has won a total of eight architectural awards - one of which was earned solely for the museum’s roof, which is covered with grass and plants, so that if viewed from the museum’s 18-story observation tower it seems to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape. “It’s something we’re extremely proud of,” says Barbara Kingsland, the museum’s marketing manager. “[The building’s architecture] is influenced by history, and has multiple purposes. The roof also acts as a terrace, and we use it for events, weddings, gatherings and a pow-wow every summer.” This combining-past-with-present concept flows throughout all of the museum. For example, the main entrance brings guests into a two-story circular area called the Gathering Space. Covered from floor to ceiling with large windows, the room is designed to imitate the palisade-surrounded Pequot
fort that once stood in Mystic, Connecticut, in the early 1600s. “A lot of proms happen here; with the ceiling windows revealing the night sky above and the stars, it’s beautiful,” says Kingsland. “We enjoy bringing people into the history, letting them experience it.” From the main room guests descend a one-story ramp toward the actual exhibits. “Walking down the ramp, we begin to, in a way, go back in time, or descend into history,” says Kingsland, who points out that the ramp’s floor is made of crushed quahog shells. (Historically, quahog shells were used to make wampum, white-shelled beads that Native Americans used as currency. So in a way, guests literally descend upon the financial history that led to the museum’s creation.) As guests descend into time, the first exhibit they meet details how the museum itself came to be – a story that Kingsland finds “really amazing, because of how easily all of this, Foxwoods, the land, the museum, could have just not existed.” According to her, the story goes that in the early 1900s the tribe had grown thin, until only three women, Alice Brend, Elizabeth George and Martha Langevin, were left on the reservation. “Sometime in the ‘70s they got a letter from the state that said when
they died, [the state] would take the last big part of the reservation and turn it into a state park.” The women then took their letters to a lawyer who - “and this is where I picture it as the big ah-ha! moment in a movie,” jokes Kingsland - found a law stating that only the federal government could take tribal land. Up to that point, all of the land had been taken by the local government. “As soon as the Pequots were federally recognized, they received a lot of their land back,” says Kingsland. “But it’s strange to think about how close it had come to none of this existing. If the lawyer hadn’t done his homework, or if the women had received their letters ten years later…” Surprisingly, though, for a museum funded by Foxwoods, it’s commercially neutral. The nearby gambling titan could have so easily implemented advertising or branding messages into the exhibits, but instead they focused on creating the best damn history presentation that this writer has ever encountered. “All of the [Native American] figures are cast from actual Native American people,” says Kingsland, describing the 51 life-like figures scattered throughout the museum. “Every one is based on an actual person. [The people] were sent to New York and cast as models. February 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

and calls it “a very exciting time” for lovers of Native American history. Instilling that excitement for history into a child or young adult, however, can prove difficult, if not impossible, which is why the museum frequently hosts events that have nothing to do with Native American history. For example, starting February 15 (in time for school vacation), the museum hosts Backyard Insects, an exhibit featuring “giant robotic insects up to 96 times their normal size,” including an 11-foottall tarantula and a 19-foot-wide monarch butterfly. “We try to have something going on all the time,” says Kingsland. “New films, corporate events, proms, weddings, hands-on activities, instructional presentations – we want this to be a place where people can come and let the history into their lives. Because history shouldn’t be forgotten; it’s the reason we’re here today.” So all those years ago, when Gordon E. Moore proposed the exponential acceleration of technology, it’s doubtful that he thought of including Native American historical preservation in that proposal. But it appears that the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center has done exactly that: accelerated history. Jettisoned it from the dusty past. Transformed it into a high-tech form appropriate for today’s modern world. All you have to do is go see it for yourself. The jewelry they wear, the painting on the faces, all of that is authentic and well researched. The clothing, all of it.” And when Kingsland says “all of it,” she means it. If a diorama features a caribou or bear, it’s a taxidermied caribou or bear. Or if a tribal member is catching a fish from a boat, the water in which they fish is crystal clear, flowing water. This attention to detail, combined with the realistic facial features and muscle definition of the figures, makes the exhibits feel like real moments in time frozen for the onlookers pleasure. As if there exists for each diorama a living, breathing world. But that isn’t to say that all of the museum involves staring silently at figures. Quite the contrary, in fact, for the museum strives to make history an interactive experience. Some exhibits feature phone numbers to call for detailed information, whereas others have accompanying touch screens for further exploration. (They even have a professional-grade movie theater showing The Witness, a 30-minute graphic film dramatizing the Pequot War, 1636-38.) “You can go as deep as you want into any of the stories that are here,” says Kingsland. “It’s very high tech and very detailed, and we really have the cream of the crop researchers backing it all.” Right now, those cream-of-thecrop researchers are focused on the Pequot War, specifically the major battle that occurred at the aforementioned Pequot fort at Mystic. Kingsland describes their efforts as “on the scale of the research that was behind setting up Gettysburg National Park,”

cheese and eat it too. 456 Main Street, Wakefield. 783-9370, www.mewstavern.com. Now, this next one you will just have to trust me on. It was introduced to me by a good friend and now I will recommend this to you. It is called Poutine, and you can get it at Dan’s Place. It is Canadian comfort food, and they are clearly doing something right up north. It’s the most surprising combination of French fries topped with cheddar cheese curds and mouth-
OOey GOOey Cheesy GOOdness
Let’s say you can’t decide between a plate of mac ‘n cheese and a grilled cheese. Guess what? You don’t have to. Head down to UMelt for their White Trash gourmet grilled cheese. It’s filled with mac n’ cheese, cheddar cheese and barbecue pulled pork on thick cut sourdough bread. Boom. In your face. 99 Fortin Road, Kingston. 284-3433, umelt. fireandwatergroup.com. And if you just can’t get mac ‘n cheese out of your head (and really why should you?), why not combine delicious things from the land and sea with Mews Tavern’s Lobsta Mac N’ Cheese. It’s got sweet and tender Maine lobster swimming in a pool of fontina, Parmesan, cheddar and jack cheeses. Then they toss all of that with garlic, peas and pasta, sprinkle it with Ritz crackers and bake it until golden brown. Looks like you can have your
watering brown gravy. It’s a new craving I get from time to time and there is no stopping this gravy train. Get on board, go hard and then go home. 880 Victory Highway, West Greenwich. 392-3092, www.danspizzaplace.com. But let’s say I want my cheese over a lovely crock of soup. I’m heading to Guytanno’s Café for their Onion Soup au Gratin. In other words, house-made three-onion soup with Parmesan crostini and Swiss cheese. Sometimes there is just no reason to mess with the classics. And isn’t that part of what makes comfort food, well, comfortable? It is familiar flavors that you know and expect, and that hit the spot every time. 62 Franklin Street, Westerly. 348-6221, www.guytannosinternationalcafe.com How about something with some sustenance? Who doesn’t love melty cheese on top of a hand-breaded chicken cutlet? The answer is everyone; everyone loves it, because it is awesome. Next time you are in Westerly, or maybe it’s time to make a special trip, stop by Vittoria’s NY Pizza for their Chicken Parmigiana. It’s tender, it’s delicious… I mean, what more do you need. Just go. 224 Post Road, Westerly. 322-1901, www.vittoriasnypizza.com.

t’s February. It’s cold. All I want to do is hibernate. But since I am neither a bear nor a groundhog, (although Groundhog’s Day is around the corner,) I suppose that eating copious amounts of comfort food will have to do. For me, there are major comfort food groups: ooey gooey cheesy goodness, sweet treats, meat with a capital M, deep dish treats and pizza. So without further ado, here are some places to get your comfort food fix while the outdoors are not quite so hospitable.

something else you value. Or you can just please her by going down to Sweet Cakes. They have a Chocolate Pudding Cake that is out of this world. In fact it is called the Bomb au Trois Chocolats. Maybe it’s the fact that it has a French name, maybe it’s the fact that it absolutely, 100% satisfies my craving: whichever it is, I love it. 1227 Kingstown Road, Peace Dale. 789-5420, www.sweetcakesbakeryri.com. Maybe I need a lighter version of chocolate. How about some decadent chocolate mousse? Head over to Basil’s of Narragansett for their French Chocolate Mousse; Parisian Style. It’s Swiss chocolate, melted, whipped up just perfectly and flavored with rum. Pair that with an after dinner drink. I’m gonna go for the Gladstone – Marie Brizard Chocolat and Raspberry Liqueur - because in my full on chocolate craving, it’s no holds barred of chocolate debauchery. 22 Kingstown Road, Narragansett. 7893743, www.basilsri.com. Now, let’s say I want chocolate for breakfast, no problem. Head over to Jigger’s Diner for their fluffy and delicious buttermilk pancakes. Get a stack of three and get whatever you want on them. Need a suggestion? This chocoholic suggests crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups drizzled with Hershey’s chocolate syrup. I guess you could just get it plain… but what fun would that be? 145 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-6060, www.jiggersdiner.com. So, you don’t have insatiable chocolate cravings? Fine, whatever. I guess there are desserts on this planet that do not involve chocolate. I’m a bit oldfashioned and some times the classics are the classics for a reason. Two words: bread pudding. If you haven’t tried this in awhile, now is your chance. Head to 1149 for the pastry team’s daily bread pudding creation. The last time I had it, it was warm and soft with gooey layers between gooey layers of brown sugar and deliciousness. It’s worth a first or second try. 1149 Division Street, East Greenwich. 884-1149, www.restaurant.elevenfortynine.com So I’ll admit, there are days I don’t crave chocolate. These days are few and far between, but they do exist. And when I am not craving chocolate, I often crave something with fruit in it, and something a tad on the lighter side. The apple crêpes from The Sea Goose Grill & Raw Bar would seem to hit the spot. The crêpes are filled with warm apples and topped with vanilla gelato and warm caramel apple cider sauce. You know what? Just writing about these is making my mouth water. 265 Post Road, Westerly. 315-0788, www.theseagoose.com.

Pizza Pizza
It doesn’t matter if you have Italian heritage or not, everyone loves pizza. Whether it has a perfect chewiness to crispy ratio, deep dish versus thin, cheese versus any topping you can imagine, it’s pure indulgence. Take for example the Sopressata pizza at Cobblestones Wood Fired Pizza. It’s covered in sopressata, mozzarella, caramelized onions, Romano, San Marzano tomatoes, basil and extra virgin olive oil. Yum. 5641 Post Road, East Greenwich. 398-8880, www.cobblestonespizzari.com. Or, The Parma at Bravo Wood Fired Pizza. It’s got salty proscuitto, peppery baby arugula, fresh mozzarella (which I die for) and olive oil. There’s just something about combining all of these flavors together that really creates a one-of-a-kind craving. 6689 Post Road, North Kingstown. 398-2500, www.bravowoodfiredpizza.com. Time to pay homage to some classics. Sometimes you
just want a good cheese pizza or a taste of tradition and Vittoria’s NY Pizza brings their A-game. Whether it’s their classic Margherita pizza - with fresh ovoline mozzarella, basil leaves, olive oil and tomato sauce – or the Calabrese pizza, which pays homage to the large Calabrese community in Westerly, these pizzas rock. The Calabrese is chock full of local soupy (sopressata), fresh mozzarella and onions. And for those of you scratching your heads at what the heck Calabrese is, it’s a region of Italy where many families in Westerly hail from. 224 Post Road, Westerly. 322-1901, www.vittoriasnypizza.com. And now it’s time to pay homage to the sea where we receive so much of our bounty from. Specifically, I’m talking about lobster. Go to The Bike Stop Café and grab a large Lobster Pizza. It’s got garlic butter, tomato and red onions topped with mozzarella, cheddar and Parmesan cheese. It combines our favorite crustacean with our favorite way to eat chewy dough. 148 Boon Street, Narragansett. 284-1414, www.facebook.com/TheBikeStopCafe.

The Fireside Benedict Skillet from T’s Restaurant is everything you would want in your bennies, but kicked up. With a horseradish spread on the English muffins, sautéed steak, button mushrooms and onions, topped with hollandaise sauce lovingly sprinkled with paprika you can actually taste served with a side of buffalo home fries, this takes the edge off of any Monday. 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich. 398-7877. 91 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 284-3981. www.tsrestaurantri.com. Imagine a burger that is first grilled on sweet onions and then placed upon a Portuguese sweet roll. Make this dream a reality at Oak St. B&B. Try their Elvis burger, made just the way the King would have liked it, with peanut butter, banana and bacon. And all of the burgers are served with house made “Oak Chips.” It’ll be your hunk of burning love all winter long. 87 Oak Street, Westerly. 315-2520, www.oakstbnb.net Pretzel everything is all the rage. At The Malted Barley, you can get stuffed pretzels, pretzel sandwiches and even a dessert pretzel. To fulfill my craving, I’m going for one of their classic pretzel sandwiches full of bratwurst, sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard. Das ist gut! Don’t forget to pair it with one of the Barley’s tasty brews to round out your comfort food fest. 42 High Street, Westerly. 315-2184, www.themaltedbarleyri.com. Did you know that fine dining and comfort food can come together to make a beautiful food baby? Spend the evening at The Twisted Vine and you’ll see what I mean. With options like Braised Short Ribs served with a vegetable and potato or a Wagyu Burger (Kobe beef) with cheddar, blue, mozzarella, avocado, bacon, a sunnyside egg and roasted red pepper, you will see how upscale and everyday dining intersect. 3 Canal Street, Westerly. 596-4600, www.thetwistedvineri.com. Sometimes, nothing says comfort other than scooping your way through a nice, warm pie. Let’s go to the savory side of pie. Mews Tavern’s All Natural Rhody Shepherd’s Pie. It’s got all natural Rhode Island grass-fed beef under smooth and creamy mashed Yukon potatoes. To top it off it is accented with a red wine sauce and Parmesan. Looks like it’s time to put a fork in me, because I am done. 456 Main Street, Wakefield. 783-9370, www. mewstavern.com. And let’s say it’s seafood you want to take a dip into. It’s almost like this dish was made for the people, by the people. 40 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-1020 , www.chopmistcharlies.com. Now onto the Italian side of the deep dish, let’s talked about baked classics. I’m a sucker for good gnocchi and lasagna. At Casa della Luce they’ve got their bases covered. Starting with the Baked Gnocchi, their handmade traditional potato gnocchi is tossed in a Bolognese sauce, topped with Parmesan cheese and finished in the oven. Or try their Homestyle Baked Lasagna that layers ricotta, Portobello mushrooms and zucchini between sheets of pasta, all topped with that Bolognese sauce and baked until it’s ooey and gooey. Everyone leaves a little more Italian than when they came in. 105 Franklin Street, Westerly. 637-4575, www.casadellaluce.net. We’ve all heard of chicken pot pie, not that there is anything wrong with that, but have you heard of the Seafood Pot Pie from George’s of Galilee? It covers all of your sea-faring basics: scallops, shrimp and scrod with roasted veggies all in a creamy lobster sauce and served in an oven-baked bread bowl. It seems like the perfect dish to eat on a chilly day while overlooking the ocean and watching the Block Island Ferry chug chug along. 250 Sand Hill Cove Road, Galilee. 7832306, www.georgesofgalilee.com.

On Sprague Pond A Narragansett couple modernizes a 130-year-old-home while respecting its past
Photography: Grace Lentini
“We’re long term Rhode Islanders,” declares Lynn McKinney. So when he and his husband Ron Margolin first started looking for homes in South County 16 years ago, they were sailing in familiar waters. Looking to move from South Kingstown, the two were searching for a home with bigger, better space in which to entertain, one of their favorite pastimes. They also wanted a home surrounded by ample grounds, for another of their cherished hobbies. “We both love to garden and the outdoors,” explains Lynn, adding that planting ample flower and vegetable gardens were a priority. Though the two weren’t specifically looking for a historic home, the couple fell for a circa 1880 farmhouse on Narragansett’s Sprague Pond. “We knew instantly,” Lynn says. “I just loved every-
thing about the house; how it’s situated on the pond here, how it’s designed, the crown molding, hardwood floors, big rooms…” he continues. And they weren’t the only ones who had fallen under the home’s spell. Lynn and Ron soon learned that the late J. Joseph Garrahy, who served as Govenor of the State of Rhode Island from 1977 to 1985, lived in the home with his family during his tenure leading the Ocean State. It’s a part of the home’s history that might explain some oddities, like the nine phone lines that were installed during his administration. “The wiring is still there in the basement. It looks like a small town operator’s board from the 1940s,” laughs Lynn. One of Garrahy’s daughters gifted the couple with an extended history of the home, which they treasure. Surrounded by six lush acres, it is easy
to see why Lynn and Ron were enchanted by the property, though admittedly, creating the gardens of their dreams would take some work. But for the most part, the couple says the home wasn’t in need of immediate renovation. Their philosophy was to live in the home for some time, see what spaces they used and identify which could be better adapted to their needs. They weren’t intimidated by the idea of a construction zone; Lynn and Ron certainly wouldn’t have been the first owners to drastically modify the home. “The house underwent a glorious expansion in 1930,” describes Lynn. “The guy who owned it had not lost money in the crash of 1929 and he hired an architect to add a wing on each end and a second floor.” The first renovation was in the kitchen. “We liked the one we had, but we
had ideas,” says Lynn. The two turned to Frank Karpowicz Architects based in Wakefield to reinvent this critical component of the home. After taking the room down to the bare studs, builders got to work on Karpowicz’s design which featured a large window to capture the view, cathedral ceilings, a trio of dishwashers, top of the line appliances including a refrigerator with glass doors and an island with seating for up to six. Greg Bressler of Picus Woodwrights in Shannock managed the construction of the project, and nearly every additional project there since the kitchen’s completion. With a palpable reverence for historic homes but a keen eye for merging old spaces with modern conveniences, Greg carefully executed the kitchen plan in a way that proves classic and contemporary design don’t have February 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

to be mutually exclusive. “Part of our joy in working with Greg is his love for wood,” adds Lynn. So when they were looking to completely renovate a pair of bathrooms in the home, they naturally turned to Picus Woodwrights. “There are wood floors in both bathrooms on the second floor and the surround of the guest bath is made of a wood called bubinga,” says Lynn. Bubinga, an imported African hardwood, is best known for exquisite grain features. While wood isn’t your typical bathroom material, it works in this unconventional space. “You feel like you have another of a level of trust and understanding with a client to be able to approach them with an idea like that,” laughs Greg. The master woodworker can also stake claim to other projects in the home,

like a custom wet bar, and smaller projects, like replacing outdated columns. “Year one they pointed out the columns and said they were boring,” he says. So when he spotted a pair of wine screws from a French wine press in an antique shop, he immediately thought of Lynn and Ron – and their shared love of wine. Today, the screws serve a structural function while adding an equally interesting and stunning decorative element. Their mantra, says Greg, was to in a way, make anything they added to or changed in the space, “look like it grew there.” “Everything there needs to harmonize with everything else because you’re working within a historic palate and the palate of the existing structure. You decide how to honor that, and how it will work with the space,” Greg
philosophizes. For Lynn and Ron, he says, the two looked to create a modern and eclectic aesthetic in a way that made sense in a 130-year-old home. “[We] identified what are the components that tie a space you’re working on with the remainder of the house, and where are the opportunities to depart from that. How will it work? And how much it is going to cost? [Lynn and Ron] have very well considered opinions … it’s a really fun process especially with those guys. They’re eager to be involved but also really receptive to what we have to say. Working collaboratively… gave me an opportunity to do some really cool stuff.” Another instrumental professional the couple relied on was Deborah Jones, a paint consultant with Adler’s Hardware in Providence. “She listens
carefully and then suggests possibilities, and we’ve been using a brand called C2 which has these rich colors,” says Lynn. (One of C2’s founders was Harry Adler himself.) Deborah counsulted on color choices for both of the new bathrooms, the master bedroom, the study, the second floor hallway and more. The living room, where Lynn says they spend the most time, is a warm shade Deborah brought to them called Roasted Tomato. With a few key professionals by their side, Lynn and Ron continue to add another storied chapter to this home’s lauded history book.

It may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes I get so stressed out and overwhelmed that the idea of taking time to relax seems more stressful, not less. That was the case one weekend not long ago, when I had so many work, family and life obligations crammed into my two “days off” that I was suffering from a serious case of self-pity. I had a massage and facial scheduled at Massage Envy for 10:45 on Sunday morning, but I had so much to do that I was, quite honestly, kind of dreading it. (You may or may not be surprised to find out that whining about your two-hour pampering session as you’re walking out the door to it doesn’t go over all that well with the people you’re leaving at home.) Still, I was so wired, and thinking so hard about my to-do list for the rest of the day, that I thought I’d have a hard time relaxing. I walked into Massage Envy (five minutes late, of course) to find soft music and a facility of blissed out people who had already been enjoying treatments, even at the early hour. I was guided into the relaxation room to wait for Andy, my masseuse. Instead of relaxing, though, I took out my phone for five stolen minutes of email… or so I had planned. As soon as I sent one text message, my phone died. Things were already going well. Andy greeted me and brought me into the treatment room, where I would be having both a massage and a facial. (A really nice move on their part, to have me stay in the same room and have the masseuse and esthetician swap out. I barely had to rouse myself to consciousness for the switch.) He asked me what kind of massage I’d like – light-pressure,
with special attention to my problem neck – then dimmed the lights and went to work. I wish I could tell you more about the next hour, but I’m pretty sure my thoughts shut off the first time he touched my perpetually tight shoulders. Apparently I have some sort of secret button there that turns off the stress receptors in my brain. I can honestly tell you that I didn’t have a single stressful thought, but I can’t tell you that IPanton had 289 a single lucid thought at all. Kind of a best case scenario. An hour of massage bliss later, Andy gave me a lavender sugar Panton 229 foot scrub, which was a really nice, aromatherapeutic way to end our session. I think I muttered some greeting to Panton in 644 Elizabeth, my facialist, when she came the room, but I can’t make any promises on that. I had indicated, back when I was capable of thought, that I was looking to clear up some minor breakouts and treat the newly acquired fine lines around my eyes. She walked me through every step of the Murad Anti-Aging Facial with an almost scientific precision, including cleansing, extraction, a light chemical peel and some serious moisturizing. After she was done – I was again in a blissful daze as she worked her magic – I felt rejuvenated. My skin was clear and fresh, my muscles felt revived, and I was ready to conquer the rest of my weekend and the coming week.

SO RHODE ISLAND | February 2014
indeed left his mark here on the East Coast with frigid temps, icy storms and some decent snowfall (in between those balmy melts we’ve had). Though some would prefer to head for warmer destinations, there are plenty of folks who can’t get enough of this weather –especially diehard skiers. Skiing has long been a favorite winter sport and pastime for New Englanders and continues to grow in popularity amongst families and students in addition to both casual and avid participants. Lucky for Rhode Islanders, not only do we have easy access to top notch ski resorts, but southern New England’s largest ski and snowboard shop has returned to its native Warwick to help ski and snowboard enthusiasts get fitted from head to toe with gear and apparel. Alpine Ski & Snowboard, formerly known as Alpine Ski and Sports, is quietly tucked away off of Jefferson Boulevard. A lodge-like atmosphere envelops this well-kept sports shop where a wide variety of wintery merchandise rests comfortably throughout the spacious store. As I take in the colorful and warm selection of ski jackets, snow pants and cozy sweaters, I’m in awe of steady stream of customers who are shopping for entire ski ensembles or simply finding the perfect pair of goggles. Owner Rick Sceery strongly believes that regardless of a skier’s level of experience the most important part
of purchasing or renting equipment is getting the skier into the right gear. “Alpine Ski & Snowboard is the only custom boot fitter in the region. Our staff is passionate about skiing and snowboarding so we will make sure our customers leave with a performance guarantee on all products.” Alpine can handle all of your crosscountry ski needs, in addition to downhill and snowboarding. Names such as Rossignol, Swix, Smith Optics and Helly Hansen are just a few of the brands I found while I had a relaxed chat with a family of five that had come in to rent equipment for an upcoming weekend of skiing at Mt. Snow, which Alpine Ski offers as one of their seasonal bus trips. “The staff here is so patient and laid back. My son has changed his mind at least three times and they listen to what he wants without rushing us,” praised customer Jennifer Landon of Cranston. After my visit, it was clear that it is not just a ski shop – but more like a ski hub which can help you and your family get the most out of your ski season with lift tickets, bus trips, lessons, vacation rentals, up-to-the-minute ski resort conditions and personal advice from their own love of the sport in addition to offering a large and affordable selection of industry leading brands in technical apparel, skis and snowboards, it is all “mountain tested” by their experienced staff. Manager Fran Gould shared that she and Sceery continually educate
themselves on what’s new and trending in all aspects of the sport; they attend shows throughout the country so they can be on the cutting edge of the industry. Alpine is the only shop in southern New England that carries a line of skies called RAMP – handcrafted in Park City, Utah. It offers complete flexibility in shape and ski design. Alpine is super family-friendly and features their popular “Junior TradeIn Program” specifically designed to keep costs down for kids’ ski and snowboard packages. In addition to this I was excited to learn that they have a consignment center with a full selection of gently used ski and snowboard equipment available. And just when you think your experience can’t get any better, visit them online and watch a host of “How To” videos ranging from tuning up your skis to a proper helmet fitting. The Warwick store is open on a seasonal basis beginning in early September until mid April, seven days a week. With the SOCHI 2014 XXII Winter Olympics slated for February 7–23, now’s a great time to get yourself geared up and cheer on Team USA.

What started your love for design? My appreciation for design was a more gradual thing, and it continues to evolve. I feel that one’s choices are often very different at different times of life – for most of us, the patterns and colors we love at 20 are pretty different from the things we choose at 50.
Photography: Tiffany Axtman
What is an inexpensive way to spruce up the design of a room? I think an inexpensive way to liven up a room is always with a change of pillows, or the addition of one animal print or bold color choice. I find that most people are uncertain when using strong colors. Take a chance; trust your instincts! When customers are choosing fabric, I am always waiting for the words “I love that.” I love so many things; I am always surprised when people cannot find something that moves them. When purchasing a rug, how do you decide what to go with? The question of rug content is determined by where you will be using the rug. Luxurious wools are delicious under foot in your bedroom, and give a sense of formality to a living room or dining room. Cotton rugs are generally less expensive than wools, but still offer a wide range of colors, patterns and textures. Indoor/outdoor rugs are great for patios and decks, but are also very practical for bathrooms and entryways, because they are usually very easy to clean. Our line of outdoor rugs from Dash and Albert can be cleaned with your hose, and hung over a railing to dry, making them very appealing to dog owners and people whose feet may not always be spotless. Which means everybody. Does room design start with the rug? One of the reasons I started to carry rugs was that when you are starting to decorate a room from scratch, design wisdom says to decorate from

the floor up. Generally a rug is a reasonably large purchase, not something you might be changing often. It is easy to pull colors from the rug of your choice, and if you are using a rug with a lot of pattern, you generally would not choose too strong a statement for your drapery or upholstery fabrics. If your rug is more muted, you might choose something more interesting for your windows or furniture. What are your preferences for choosing patterns and solids in the house? My personal favorite would be a rug with a great pattern, then solid colors and textures for your upholstery and either a subtle geometric or coordinating pattern for the windows. I am also a big fan of a beautiful patterned fabric on the windows, but I generally feel that your furniture should be somewhat more subdued. Not always subdued in color, but in pattern, except for smaller pieces. A sofa in a large or bold pattern will be what really stands out in a room, and that is fine if you are absolutely sure, or just very confident in your choices, but it is not where I would choose to put my strongest pattern.
Is there such thing as too many accents, pillows or throws, in a room? Sure, clutter is hardly ever appealing. But everyone has a different tolerance for such things, and I prefer the clutter of things that you love to the stark emptiness of someone who just doesn’t care to make their space more beautiful and inviting.

What piece of advice could you give someone when redesigning a room? The advice I give to someone designing a room would be to find one thing – be it a rug, a fabric, a pillow or an accessory or lighting fixture – that you absolutely love. Adore. Cannot live without. From there, we can pull colors, shapes and patterns that will complement and uplift your favorite item. Trust yourself – who else is more important to please?

So Delicious | Review
By David Dadekian
Local Love The new menu at a neighborhood restaurant warms the heart I wrote about how Italian restaurants in Rhode Island are a dime a dozen – abundant and inexpensive – with almost every community in the state having at least one, if not more, Italian spots. In East Greenwich there are a few and sort of smack in the middle of some suburban streets lies Chianti’s, happily fulfilling the role of neighborhood joint, cranking out the calamari, the gnocchi and plenty of dishes – with a side of pasta or potato and vegetable – for everyone around to enjoy. If you’ve ever driven to Goddard Park or gone to a wedding at Quidnesset Country Club, and who in Rhode Island hasn’t, you know exactly where Chianti’s is. It’s a big building which has certainly seen its share of banquets over the last 40 years. It’s had a few facelifts to keep with the times, though when you pass through the big front door it’s a little like stepping back into the well-wooded restaurants of our childhood. There is a nice large bar right in the middle of the dining room, which was almost full and bustling when we had dinner on a recent busy Saturday night. As I said, the room was almost full, so we were seated right away. As busy
as Chianti’s was, the service was very prompt and attentive throughout our dinner and, it seemed, throughout the room. We were going to start with wine, but as we turned the pages in Chianti’s enormous menu, we almost got lost in all the choices. There must have been around 50 dishes on the menu, and that’s not counting what had to be about ten or more specials our server discussed with us. There’s just about every Italian restaurant staple on the menu and it was certainly tough making a selection. Finally the four of us decided on our dishes and a bottle of wine and dug into the focaccia bread with warmed garlic olive oil that was quickly brought to our table. A few moments later and the appetizers arrived. First up, it’s Rhode Island and it’s Italian, so we tried the Calamari Fritti ($9.99). No marinara sauce with this calamari presentation, but there were plenty of hot pepper rings and lots of garlic as well. It wasn’t the cleanest fry on the calamari, but the rings were tasty and not chewy at all. We also had the Pan Fried Fresh Mozzarella ($8.50), which did come with a side of marinara sauce. That sauce is certainly a big thing to judge at an Italian restaurant and I’m happy
Clams Zuppa with local littlenecks in a plum tomato and wine broth
to say Chianti’s makes a fine marinara with good flavor and seasoning and very little sweetness. For dinner we tried to vary our dishes and to get a good sense of the restaurant, since even if we dined there

every day of the month we might not have had the chance to try all the entrees and specials they produced. We ordered the Gnocchi ($14.99), Chicken Fiorentina ($17.99), Veal Piccata ($19.50) and Eggplant Parmigiana ($15.99). The Chicken and Veal dishes both came with sides of pasta, or potato and vegetable, but this is a place for a side of pasta, no? The Gnocchi is labeled “A House Specialty” on the menu and is a dish of house-made potato and ricotta cheese dumplings, in a pink sauce of marinara and vodka reduction. None of us had ever had gnocchi with the ricotta integrated into the pasta before; while it was a good stuffed pasta, it wasn’t what we were expecting. The sauce was good and the pasta held its shape, but it was almost like a bowl of stuffed shells instead of pillows of love. tomato brunoise. It sounds like a lot of layers but it all came together very well with the exception of the spinach which didn’t add much flavor. The mozzarella was very good and it was one of the better of the four dishes, especially with a side of pasta with more of the tasty marinara sauce. The Veal Piccata, lightly floured and pan seared, then sautéed with fresh garlic, capers in a lemon and white wine sauce, was a very straightforward dish. The veal could have been cooked a little less, but the sauce was flavorful and again with a side of pasta it made for a classic Italian restaurant meal. The Eggplant Parmigiana was also what you would expect, lightly floured, egg battered
and fried eggplant layered with mozzarella and marinara sauce. It came baked in a deep dish, which held the layers together and allowed for lots of melting cheese in every bite. We shared all these dishes with a bottle of white and a bottle of red, which I think perfectly sums up our trip to this delicious neighborhood Italian restaurant.

Rhode Island with its bitter temperatures, a day at Narragansett Town Beach is probably the last thing on your mind. However, a new Indian restaurant has opened just steps from the beach, and it’s ready to spice up your winter. Maharaja Indian Restaurant & Lounge is the first Indian restaurant to open in Narragansett. Its beachside location makes it the perfect place to enjoy views of the winter surf while being warmed by the restaurant’s flavorful curries and cocktails. In the Indian culture, the Maharaja is a king or prince who ranks above everyone else. Maharaja intends to be just that on the Indian restaurant scene in Rhode Island. The menu features a wide variety of Tandoor (charcoal-grilled) and Mughlai (Northern Indian) dishes. The curries run the gamut from Vindaloos to Saags to Tikka Masalas. For the winter months, the restaurant’s Biryani dishes would be perfect on cold days. Biryanis are hearty baked rice and meat casseroles. If you want to take a walk on the wild side, be sure to try their Goat Biryani. The dinner menu is served daily from 4-10pm. Lunch, served daily from 12-4pm, offers specials all priced under $10. There is something to please everyone with vegetarian, chicken, lamb and seafood options to pick from, and all luncheon specials are served with basmati rice and naan. Located inside the Village
Inn Hotel at 1 Beach Street, Narragansett. 363-9988, www.maharajari.com A Charlestown Speakeasy The Charlestown Rathskeller reopened this fall and is bringing back some of the good times this tavern was once known for. In the late 1920s, the Rathskeller was a speakeasy, and people flocked to the tavern for its home-brewed beer. Cars lined the road, and patrons waited an hour or more to get their fill of illegal booze, burgers, steaks, fish & chips and their specialty, fresh-cut fries. The tavern also offered saunas, steam baths and horseshoes for its patrons to enjoy. Fast forward to 2014, and the tavern is once again thriving under the management of Ryan Pincince who says running the tavern is “the best job [he] ever had.” Executive Chef Wayne (Butch) Bush has taken the reins in the kitchen and has never looked back. He grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, cut his teeth in the Key West restaurant scene and relocated to Rhode Island in 2004. Specializing in comfort food, his Ribeye Steak (all 22 ounces of it) is a thing to behold. It’s broiled at a very high temperature to give it a caramelized crust that seals in all the juices. The hand-cut fries are still a highlight at the Rathskeller and are cut from local potatoes. All of the seafood the restaurant uses comes right from Pt. Judith, so you know it’s fresh.

Here’s a great recipe the Sons of Liberty have prepared using Battle Cry. It’s sure to warm up your remaining winter nights.
The Rathskeller is slightly off the beaten path on Old Coach Road in Charlestown, but it’s worth a trip to experience the history and the food. Pincince says “We are a great spot for the locals to warm up by the fire as well as a hidden gem for wandering vacationers.” The restaurant posts daily lunch and dinner specials on its Facebook page. Chef Bush offers the rustic French classic Beef Bourguignon as the basis for his beef stew at the Rathskeller. He says “it’s great served with roasted parsnips, egg noodles, mashed potatoes or nice crusty bread.” Check out our website for the recipe. 489A Old Coach Road, Charlestown. 792-1000, www.thecharlestownrathskeller.com

It is fermented with a Trappist-style yeast and aged in charred oak barrels, which gives it the unique flavors of dark fruit, anise and black licorice. Sa-Tang is a new Thai restaurant in Wakefield owned by Nina Conklin. Her and chef Khomkhai Cimini have been delighting locals with their authentic cuisine and have turned this restaurant into a neighborhood favorite. How would you describe the food at Sa-Tang? Our food is authentic northern Thai. My chef and I are both from the northern part of Thailand and want to share our food and culture with the people here. Everything is made fresh, and we get our vegetables from local farms during the summer growing season. Where did you learn to cook Thai food? I learned to cook from my family in Thailand when I was young. I learned almost everything I know about cooking at home and the recipes we use at Sa-Tang come from our families. What is it about Thai food that makes it so unique? Why do you love it? Thai food is very unique compared to other cuisines. There are a lot of herbs and everything must be fresh. The food is spicy and based on the balance of different flavors. Thai food balances sweet, spicy, salty and sour. The food varies depending on where you are in Thailand, but we focus on food from northern Thailand. I grew up eating these dishes and that’s why I love this food. There aren’t a lot of authentic Thai restaurants in the area and I wanted to show people that this food is delicious.
Do you have a favorite dish? I love cooking curry dishes. Thai curries are spicy stews with vegetables and meat, served over rice. There are a lot of different types of curries and they are a big part of Thai food. My chef loves cooking noodle dishes like Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mow. Thai cuisine also has a lot of noodle dishes, including both stir fried noodles and noodle soups. For someone who isn’t familiar with Thai food, what is a good dish to get introduced to the cuisine? We would recommend Pad Thai. Pad Thai is a good first Thai dish because it’s not too spicy and it’s so yummy. It has Thai rice noodles with peanuts, vegetables, meat and Pad Thai sauce which is a little sour and a little sweet. What inspired you to open Sa-Tang? My chef owned six restaurants in Thailand and then one in Massachusetts before opening Sa-Tang, and I owned one in Cape Cod as well. We’ve always loved cooking Thai food and wanted to continue working in restaurants, so I opened Sa-Tang.

Didi Suydam shares gallery space with her husband, sculptor Peter Diepenbrock

Wearable Art
Photography: Blink of an Eye Photography
Jewelry artist Didi Suydam focuses on the beauty of the body all jewelry artists must consider the basic geometry of the human body: otherwise we’d all be walking around with bracelets that slide off our wrists and choker necklaces that live up to their name with unfortunate accuracy. For Jamestown-based jewelry and photographer Didi Suydam, however, designing wearable art means taking into account not just how the piece fits, but how it falls on the body. Suydam likens the process to the challenge a sculptor faces in picking the right site to display his work: “You have to think of the body as a landscape, and your space as the neck and the breastplate,” she says. The design also needs to complement the “movement of the body, the swing of the body,” says Suydam. The sculpture analogy is apt because Suydam originally wanted to be one; she switched to metalworking and, by extension, jewelry making, for a simple reason: “I loved 3D pieces, but I had no skills,” she recalls. But she was drawn to the art of working with metal, which allowed her to engage in “a very naive kind of engineering” where measurements are all taken by eye, techniques like scoring metal are done by hand, and where she finds satisfaction and calm in the process of drawing concepts, designing pieces,
and figuring how to execute them. Suydam describes her style as “very elemental, simple, distilled down,” and highly influenced by primitive art forms. There are hints of ancient Egypt in some of her more geometric designs, while some metal-and-stone pieces would seem at home around the neck of a Germanic queen. “Historically, jewelry was used to represent your culture, clan or status, so I like the feeling that it’s communicating something – that what I express in my work speaks to the buyer on an absolute level,” she says. “It has to fit the buyer in the right way.” In addition to wearable art, Suydam exhibits her photography at the Didi Suydam Contemporary Gallery on Ferry Wharf, which also features the work of her sculptor husband, Peter Diepenbrock. Suydam’s images often focus on “forces of nature” but also reflect the artist’s love of architecture, and provide an avenue for her to utilize color palettes typically absent from her jewelry work. Although she considers jewelry her bread and butter, Suydam’s photography is also highly acclaimed, having been featured in a Fall 2012 show at the Newport Art Museum, for example. The gallery, opened about two years ago in Jamestown, represents
a middle ground for the couple, who previously ran busy galleries featuring multiple artists in Newport before deciding to build a studio at home and focus on making art rather than selling the work of others. “We really love being in Jamestown and in our own community,” says Suydam. “It’s much more personal, and a more natural extension of what we do.” And, while the gallery may never get quite as busy as when it was located on Bannister’s Wharf, “we feel that Jamestown is becoming more of a destination,” she says. The uncertain economics inherent in the marriage of two artists – particularly a couple with one daughter in college and the other entering in the fall – can sometimes be challenging, but Suydam says she and Diepenbrock “wake up every day feeling grateful.” “That doesn’t mean there’s no stress, but we couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”

Play It Loud A new music venue will have you dancing If you’re a fan
of ska music (or grew up in the 1980s), The English Beat is legendary. And frankly, you don’t really expect to be this close to your idols in West Warwick, especially when you’re standing in a 19th-century mill building on an otherwise dark and deserted side street. But there we were with lead singer Dave Wakeling slamming out “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “I Confess” at Manchester 65, Rhode Island’s newest live-music venue — a space so intimate that the band doesn’t so much exit the stage as steps off into the crowd once the music stops. Located in the Crompton Mill Historic District, Manchester 65 (the name is the address of the old textile mill, reversed) is looking to write a little history of its own. And though the location may seem a little sketchy, the neighborhood is less daunting than the area around Fête or Firehouse 13 in Providence, there’s ample free parking and the venue itself is a vast improvement over, say, the final incarnation of The Living Room (which, despite its legendary status, ended its days occupying a dingy former restaurant building). “The place is big and is just the right amount of ‘ugly’ that you want from a rock club. It very much reminds me of The Living Room, but twice the size,” says Aaron Martin, drummer for the Rhode Island-based band Cad. “The stage is high and large, which I feel makes a better show for fans and bands alike. I love the vibe of this place — it’s one of my favorite places to play in Rhode Island and there are a lot of national acts (such as Afroman, Eve 6 and Candlebox) starting to roll through, so it’s quickly becoming a hot spot for the live music scene.” “We are looking for positive music, where people are just out to have a good time,” says Manchester 65 owner Jim Vickers, who also acts as the venue’s booking agent. Vickers is a big fan of ska bands, for example, because the music “makes everyone happy, and the crowd is all dressed up and dancing.” Like any new operation, there were some growing pains when Manchester 65 opened its doors this summer, including complaints about the sound
Juxo’s Soul Kitchen at Manchester 65
setup. On the night of the English Beat show (with fellow ska acts The Copacetics and Brunt of It opening), however, the acoustics and sound system were crisp and clear. The layout is actually pretty ideal for a small music venue: the club consists of a single, large stone-and-brick building with a vaulted ceiling, divided in two. One side has the stage, a few tables and couches, and plenty of standing room in front; the other is set up as a lounge with communal tables and flat-screen TVs hung from the ceiling; the bar is along the wall opposite the stage. What’s nice about the setup is that you can be immersed in the music one minute, then step into the lounge if you need to carry on a conversation at a normal speaking level. In the summer, an outdoor, riverside patio serves as an al-fresco concert space on Sunday afternoons. The selection at the bar is basic, but the $3 Narragansett cans and $4 tallboys are big sellers, and cocktail prices top out at $9. The bathrooms were some of the cleanest we’ve seen in a nightclub anywhere. As you’d expect from a new club located so close to the site of the infamous Station nightclub, there are multiple, well-marked fire exits — it’s actually one of the least-claustrophobic clubs you’re likely to find. (Manchester 65 also will be hosting a Station Fire memorial concert and fundraiser in February.) Vickers, a veteran of the Providence music scene who previously worked at Lupo’s and ran the Providence Social Club, says the 550-capacity Manchester 65 is a safe and affordable (cover
charge on most nights range from $10$25) alternative to the hassles of attending a show in the city, and a venue for both local acts and touring bands that otherwise might pass Rhode Island by in favor of rooms like the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River or the Hampton Beach Ballroom in New Hampshire. Rock and roots acts are schedule staples, but Manchester 65 also recently hosted a live production of Jesus Christ Superstar and next year will stage an adaptation of The Who’s rock opera, Tommy. “I became passionate about live music working for Rich Lupo and Jack Reich at the original Lupo’s,” says Vickers. “Those guys had a knack for finding the finest up-and-coming artists. I saw bands I had never heard of for the first time at Lupo’s — the Beat Farmers, Bruce Hornsby, NRBQ, many others; it was amazing. Those experiences taught me to seek out music, not just listen to the radio. And that is the approach I’m bringing to Manchester 65.” “It’s a cool new place for all different kinds of music genres, especially the rock scene,” says Warwick resident Christina Markrush, a fan of local bands like Cad and Along Came the Flood. “I’ve been there several times already, and every show was awesome.”

Get Tipsy on Truffles Whether you’re getting chocolates for that special someone or treating yourself to a little indulgence, it’s good to know where you can stop to pick up one, two or twelve pieces (no judgment). And although there is nothing wrong with just plain chocolate, it’s Valentine’s Day: kick it up a notch by picking out a few pieces that remind you of your favorite booze. We promise you’ll still be able to drive after snacking on a few of these.
Jennifer’s Chocolates This jewel-shaped Champagne Gem was easy on the eyes, and on the palate. With an almost caramel-like filling, the champagne flavor was subtle at first but noticeable after a moment. Both the milk and dark chocolate shells were nice and thin, which gave us opportunity to savor every bite. 160 Old Tower Hill Road, Wakefield. 783-8423, www.jenschocolates.com.
Sweenor’s Chocolates
Sweet Twist
In the words of one of our staff members, “okay, wow, that’s boozy.” The Dark Chocolate Rum Truffle had a strong rum aroma but the dark chocolate shell balanced the flavor well. It’s very rich and larger than your average truffle, so multiple bites are in order to finish this potent treat. 21 Charles Street, Wakefield. 783-4433, www.sweenorschocolates.com.
This very creamy and not overly powerful Irish Cream Truffle was an overall crowd pleaser. With dark and white chocolate drizzles over the milk chocolate exterior, that we could actually taste, the combination was well balanced and thoroughly enjoyable. 5707 Post Road, East Greenwich. 885-7579, www. sweettwist.com.
Chocolate Delicacy The Amaretto Truffle had a nice interior texture that was soft and fudgy. The dark chocolate exterior was really key to balancing the almond aroma that for some reason reminded us of cherry cordials, without the gooey cherry. 219 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-4949, www.chocolatedelicacy.com.
