Celebrate National Poetry Month on Block Island Who can think of a better location to celebrate National Poetry Month than picturesque Block Island? We certainly cannot and we think Block Island Poetry Project (BIPP) creator and Rhode Island Poet Laureate, Lisa Starr would agree. This springtime event has occurred each April since 2004 and has

attracted some of the most well known poets of our time. As an island resident, Starr developed this event as a way to combine her life as a poet with her love for the Block Island landscape and community. She even hosts participants of the workshops at The Hygeia House, the inn that she and her husband own. Each weekend, different workshops; they’re amazing opportunities for the community to meet and connect in conversations about issues that affect our world today, through the group’s wonderful shared passion for poetry. This year is the project’s ninth, and features Billy Collins, who served as the Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003, and Coleman Barks, a renowned poet whom is most known for his interpretations of mystic poets from Persia. The 2012 BIPP begins on April 12 with celebration of self-expression through yoga, Nia, poetry and art; come prepared to “dance, write, draw, stretch, breathe, scribble, sing, eat, share, laugh and even bang a drum.” 466-9616, www. bipoetryproject.com. – Eilish Shaffer

They’ll Have You In Stitches The Narragansett Bay Quilters’ Association (NBQA) is growing – or should we say quilting – a very special garden this month. The garden of Quilts show will take place on Saturday, April 21 from 10am5pm and on Sunday, April 22 from 10am-4pm at the North Kingstown High School. Unique events will take place on both days. On Saturday, there will be a fashion show at 2pm; on Sunday, there will be a small quilt auction. The show, which takes place every other year, features over 300 quilts from tra-
ditional to contemporary styles. The association has 250 members and is colorful in both personality and quilts stitched. The NBQA also promises to raffle off a beautiful quilt in addition to other basket raffles. With special exhibits to indulge in, activities to keep children occupied and lots of snacks to munch on, it’s sure to be a day to remember. It seems that these days, everyone has a Facebook account. Wouldn’t you like to use all that social networking power for good instead of spying on exes or people you went to high school with? Well, now you can. Do something good for your community while doing a little shopping for yourself. Cash mobs have been spreading across the country as a way for community residents to support local businesses. Cash mob organizers notify their friends via Facebook (or other social media sites) regarding where and when to meet. They also remind everyone to come armed with

In honor of Earth Day (April 22), here are 22 ways to teach your kids to live greener, more natural lives – and to have fun while you do it.

Your kids could spend April vacation inside, playing video games – or they could spend the week learning about global wildlife and ecology at ZooCamp. During the week of April 16-20, the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence offers all-day camp that includes learning activities, zoo tours, arts and crafts and animal encounters. This year’s theme is “It’s All Connected,” and it focuses on interdependence between animal species. Arcadia Management Area is the state’s largest recreational area with over 14,000 mostly forested acres. This Earth Day, celebrate by simply taking your kids outside. There’s no better way to teach your kids how important it is to preserve clean water than by showing them the life that depends on it. The Biomes Center, the private aquarium in North Kingstown, offers weekly public education about local marine life. Every Sunday, bring your kids for a day of feeding and learning about everything from seahorses to Ruby the octopus. Kermit the Frog may have been right about a lot of things, but he couldn’t have been more wrong when he sang, “It’s not easy being green.” On Saturday, April 7 from 10am-1pm, being green means shopping local (and sustainable) at Coastal Growers Winter Farmer’s Market’s last market of the season. All your kids’ local favorites will be there, from Susanna’s Ice Cream of Middletown and Matunuck Oyster Farm to South Kingstown’s Poblano Farm salsa. Being green isn’t just about protecting the environment – it’s also about protecting yourself from pollutants. Even the clothes you wear can contain harmful chemicals. University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus is now offering a Learning Landscape Environmental Education field trip for children and groups. Held at the Botanical Gardens, the field trip covers everything from the water cycle, ecosystems and climate zones to seed diversity, native mammals and birds. Go on a real-world outdoor treasure hunt adventure in South County this spring. Do you have a GPS-enabled device? Do you have a child who enjoys pretending he is a pirate? By navigating to a specific set of GPS coordinates, you can find hidden geocaches (containers, AKA, treasure). Had you taken you kids to Casey Farm in the mid-1700s, it probably would have looked a lot like it does today. A mid-eighteenth-century homestead overlooking Narragansett Bay, Casey Farm was the center of a plantation that produced food for local and foreign markets back in the day, and is now a certified organic farm on 300 acres. Explore the depths of the oceans at the University of Rhode Island’s Inner Space Center. Every Tuesday morning, the Graduate School of Oceanography conducts a tour (reservations required) of its Narragansett facility. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum is celebrating Earth Week April 1820 by inviting families to participate in a Recycled Crafts event ($5 activity fee), followed by a 2pm tour to discover how native people transformed the resources available to them to make useful objects. Then on April 21, return for Earth Day on Lantern Hill from 10am-2pm. Welcome the season at the Gilbert Stuart Spring Fair at the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum. On April 29, the museum welcomes families for a celebration that includes live demonstrations of colonial life, johnnycakes, an art sale, self-guided nature walks and more. It’s never too early to teach your kids about nature. Nature’s Tots, a program offered by the Audubon Society at their Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge in Exeter, introduces children ages two through five about the natural world. Green living doesn’t have to stop at home. The Greene School in West Greenwich is devoted to a curriculum based upon environmental education and natural awareness. The school works with the Audubon Society of RI and URI (the permanent school will be part of the W. Alton Jones campus). This Earth Day, celebrate by enjoying all the things that make earth wonderful. The Block Island Greenways are 25 miles of free, public fresh air and sunshine, not to mention the grassy meadows, stone walls, inland moors, Mohegan bluffs and beaches. The visitor’s center also offers information on the plant and animal life of Block Island. The Westerly Land Trust works to preserve the town’s unspoiled green spaces for future generations to enjoy. Every Thursday morning, enjoy a guided trail walk, some of which go through the land trust’s conservation properties. The easy walks are free and open to all ages, and are meant to be relatively easy jaunts. April’s locations include Great Swamp in Kingston, Grills Preserve and Woody Hill North in Westerly, and Bluff Point in Groton, Connecticut. www. westerlylandtrust.org.
The Apeiron Institute for Sustainable Living has some big aspirations for the smallest state. Located on 55 acres of nature trails, edible landscapes, streams and meadows in Coventry, the center is an ecological housing model that showcases over 750 environmentally friendly systems, technologies, and products. The Apeiron invites families to join them for a Volunteer Work Day/Open House on April 11. This April, teach your kids that sometimes, being green means getting new toys. The Southern Connecticut Children’s Museum is hosting a toy swap for the second year in a row in honor of Earth Day. Instead of throwing away toys this year while spring cleaning, recycle them. Electronics, stuffed animals, games and books are all welcome. Families are encouraged to drop toys off ahead of time. Observe the iconic harbor seals in their natural habitat on a Harbor Seal Walk. On April 14, Laura Carberry, a naturalist for the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, will lead a family-friendly walk to Rome Point, the spot with the largest seal population in the state. Giving your kids experiences that help them understand the importance of the natural world is one giant step towards a greener future. Start your kids thinking green when they’re young – really young. The Goddard School, a day care in South Kingstown, emphasizes green education in their programming. It’s the porch that
pulls you in first. On a given day, you might see a collection of antique rockers, or birdhouses made by a local carpenter. Today, because the weather is sunny and warm, it’s a scattering of picnic baskets. But don’t stop at the porch. Nana’s Jules, a shop devoted to artfully presented antiques and locally made crafts, is worth a closer look. “I’ve always been a collector,” says owner Pam Lavoie. “I’ve always had antiques and vintage things. I’ve always wanted to have a little place like this. A few years ago, I met a wonderful man: we got married, and he afforded me the ability to follow my dream, so I did.” She and her intern, a URI student named Adam Markey, have been running the store together for almost a year now. “He’s my right arm,” she says. What makes Nana’s Jules unique is the creativity Pam captures in the place, and the myriad elements that one small shop manages to encompass. One element is the vintage and household items that local people bring in to sell. “We have turn of the century tables, and a pair of chairs from Barrington Bible College. Everything has a story. I try to find out as much about every piece that comes in as I can,” says Pam.
When items come in that aren’t in perfectly saleable condition, Pam will refurbish them herself. She refinishes tables and chairs, and repaints pottery and vases. She recently worked on a set of cabinets from the 1930s that she painted into newer looking shabby chic. “It still looks antique,” Pam says, “but it brings them to a clean state.” Another element to Nana’s Jules is the arts and crafts by local artists that decorate the space – everything from artwork and painted wine glasses to jewelry and handmade essential oil soaps. “That’s always been my dream, to have local crafters and artists,” Pam says. “We’re keeping it in the community, and we’re able to give back to the community. My customers are local, my artists are local, and their work is selling.” “I have things that are 200 years old,” Pam says. “I have brand new restored items. We have things that are $2, and things that are $200. Things go so quickly here that the room changes over almost weekly.” That element of surprise is what keeps her passionate about her work, and what keeps customers coming back to this charming shop. “Every day, I never know what’s going to come through the door.” 54 Richmond Townhouse Road, Richmond. 491-9930

I remember the first time I heard about threading. I was at my hair salon, red and swollen after getting my brows waxed. As I was checking out, the receptionist lowered her voice and said, “You know, there’s a better way to get your eyebrows done.” She told me about a place a few minutes away from Providence that offered threading, an ancient Middle Eastern practice that uses cotton thread to lift hairs at the follicle line. I’d always been open to different beauty techniques, so I tried it a few weeks later. It’s been eight years since and I’ve never returned to waxing. Yes, threading is that much better. I won’t lie to you. It stings, especially the first time. The discomfort actually depends on how experienced and gentle the threader is. I’ve had both extremes – I’ve held back tears a few times, and felt a tickle other times. But like any other treatment we endure to look and feel better, it’s less about the pain and all about the gain. It lasts a little over two weeks, and I can usually make it three weeks by plucking a few stray hairs between appointments. Unlike waxing or plucking, hair is removed cleanly line by line, producing a very defined shape. Plus if you’re like me and have sensitive skin, this all natural, no chemical technique will not leave your skin red or bumpy. I’m telling you, it’s a beautiful win-win. While the Providence area has several salons dedicated to the unique hair removal procedure, the concept is fairly new in Southern Rhode Island. “I’m surprised how many women haven’t heard
about it,” says Stephen Devereaux, owner of the recently opened Bella Brow in South Kingstown. “I’d estimate that one in four customers are coming in to get threaded for the first time.” I can totally see why and how this is happening. I personally shared my beauty secret with at least five women who are now maintaining their brows exclusively with treading. Devereaux is also pleasantly surprised by the clientele seeking out the service. “College students come in, and so do their moms.” Priyanka Tara, who opened Smiley Eyebrow Threading in East Greenwich a year ago, agrees that awareness is building in the area. “Customers prefer the shape because it’s more precise,” she says. Tara, who was born in India (VERIFY), describes how the technique is passed down from generation to generation in her native land. She also received formal training in India that taught her about varying facial shapes and skin types. “Eyebrows can make or break your face. A nicely shaped eyebrow can truly enhance your appearance,” says Tara. Both salons offer threading on the upper lip, cheeks and neck. I’ve certainly had a few other areas done myself, but let’s keep that on the down low. A lady can’t spill all of her beauty secrets, now can she? Royal Accents Lisa Brandon on her fascinating accessories Your store is known for fun, affordable jewelry. Tell us how you got started. I started the business with a friend of mine several years ago, after many visits to a similar store in Florida. I was impressed with how an affordable piece of jewelry could change the look of any outfit. I like being able to provide accessories at prices that allow people to change things up frequently.
Who’s wearing them? Dancers are using them to accent their appearance for shows. A lot of people are picking them up for Kentucky Derby events in May. Women enjoy wearing them for birthday parties and bridal showers. Kids have been buying them for special hat days at school. Whenever I wear one, I always get compliments.
The newest product you are carrying are fascinators. Tell us what they are. Ever since the Royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, there has been a fascination with fascinators, a unique hair accessory. There are many different styles, from small and subtle, with subtle colors, to large and sometimes outrageous, with colors that are bright and bold. Some styles are more formal, with netting or tulle, while others have funky colored feathers or unique shapes.
What other accessories do you carry? We also sell scarves, hats, purses and evening bags. I encourage people to bring in their special occasion outfit (or a picture) so we can match up the perfect accessory.
Do you recommend wearing them in place of or in addition to jewelry? Sometimes, a well-chosen fascinator can replace jewelry, when clipped to a woman’s clothing. They come in a variety of attachment styles, from combs and elastics to clips and pins. The majority of styles are attached to thin headbands, which are easily hidden in your hairstyle, and are very comfortable to wear. You can choose to match a monochromatic outfit and use a fascinator for a color burst or focal point.
Amidst all the fun at Spangles, your store is known for its community support. One of my core values is that we are here on this earth to not just take… but to share. I feel that my success is directly related to the success of the community. If we work together we can make our environment better for everyone.
What style or color do you see trending for spring and summer? I see a lot of bright and bold colors for spring and summer: yellow, orange and pink; hot colors that pop. Purple is very big this year as well.

CHALK IT UP: Getting creative in the Benjamins’ playroom
Child’s Play When Jennifer and Steve
Benjamin were moving back to Southern New England from a career opportunity that has sent the Rhode Island natives to Florida just three years ago, their priorities were like that of any young family: find a home in a reputable school district that offered ample space and a functional layout for their then-newborn daughter and four-year-old son. After an exhaustive search, the couple had fallen for a newly built home in North Kingstown’s Fletcher Meadows neighborhood. “We knew we wanted to be in Southern Rhode Island, and we knew we wanted to live by the ocean,” says Jennifer, who was sold on the property after the open house only to learn the home was quickly placed under contract. There was a glimmer of hope when the contract fell through but it was immediately spoken for. Just when the two least expected it, the home became available. “We’d been looking at it
50 SO RHODE ISLAND | April 2012
for a year and a half,” Jennifer says. “I had already decorated it in my head.” The family nestled in quickly, taking advantage of the fact that they were right on picturesque Allen Harbor and Quonset Bike Path. The neighborhood of 33 custom built homes is, to their delight, populated by a majority of fellow young families. The house quickly felt like home, and when it came to creating the interior design scheme, Jennifer’s creative energy let loose, perhaps most in the children’s rooms. “[Lola and Nicholas] each have their own room, and we have a Jack and Jill bath with their own sink,” Jennifer explains, adding that such an amenity would have been a dream growing up. Lola, now four, is ever the girly girl, so only a pink room would do. But Jennifer, with an unabashed passion for decorating, is no stranger to the quest for the perfect shade. Glints of Pink was
the ideal hue, a tone seemingly similar to pure white but with ever so slight pink subtleties depending on the light in the room. Six whimsical paintings of birds grace the wall, a bargain find from Pottery Barn Kids. The colors in the petite paintings compliment the cheerful quilted bedding, boasting percale appliqués of oversized blooms in varying shades of Lilly Pulitzer-type tones. Jennifer says that she enjoyed the spoils of being pregnant at the same time as some of her closest friends, so steals and deals and irresistible finds were snatched up in the pleasures of impending motherhood, with the knowledge that such treasures would find a special place if not in her own home, then in another. Far from cookie-cutter design, Jennifer peppered the room with an eclectic mix of punchy décor and one-of-a-kind finds. “Shabby chic” is the best way to describe it she says, mixed with senti-
mental treasures and inventive design solutions. When she put up a rod and curtain ring clips for drapery, and considered her daughter’s love for dressing up (“She loves to wear fairy wings,” Jennifer says with a laugh), she got an idea. Like a fashion-forward backyard clothing line, Jennifer clipped some of Lola’s most legendary outfits (amassed in her short four years) for a unique and frilly window treatment. “Oh, there’s her Easter dress, what she wore home from the hospital, a jean skirt that says ‘I’m 2!’ that she wore on her second birthday,” explains Jennifer. “They’re my favorite pieces.” And fortunately, the shades of the clothing harmonize with the color scheme, complete with apropos ribbons and bows. She knows the creative curtains suit her little budding fashionista for now, but will likely have a whole new look as little Lola grows. but turns out to be an authentic oven from the 1930s (that Steve completely stripped of its working parts so it is perfectly safe for play). Another age-old piece is a picture of a baby that hung in Jennifer’s grandmother’s childhood room. More modern elements include a plush, comfy kids chair in light pink with white Swiss dots and white piping – with Lola embroidered on it. Seven-and-a-half year old Nicholas (“And that half is very important to him,” Jennifer stresses with exaggeration) had a very simple request: make his room blue. And so they did, painting the walls a serene shade resembling the sky with coordinating bedding and dé-
cor. “He’s very much a boy,” says Jennifer. “The baby and toddler things have come down.” But his most beloved toys are still easily accessible. One of his favorite spaces in the room is a bench at the window where Nicholas enjoys using the binoculars to spot the deer, wild turkeys and other critters that roam the family’s sprawling lawn, neighborhood, and surrounding flora and fauna. “My little scholar,” Jennifer says with a sigh. Though his room is definitely his domain, a first floor playroom is where big brother Nicholas and little Lola spend much of their time. “They do all kind of things in there,” says Jennifer, including computer games, Legos, arts and crafts
and making music. Jennifer and Steve collaborated on reinventing what was built as an in-law suite into a creative space for the children. “I come up with the stuff but my husband is very artistic – he’s good,” she says, and she’s not kidding. Whimsical clouds appear to float across a light blue sky on the wall, while an oversized house-shaped space made from chalkboard paint allows the kids to channel their inner Picassos. Ever so conveniently, the first floor room is near the kitchen – a.k.a. command central, which makes for keeping an eye on the creative kiddos a breeze. For this family of four in Fletcher Meadows, there’s no other place they’d like to be.

For Bethany Mazza and her mother Betty “Bee” Givan, their steps into the fashion world have been a numbers game – the number four, that is. The two women have changed locations four times, have 44 clothing, shoe, accessory and jewelry designers in stock, and are now gearing up to celebrate their 40th year of business. In 1972, Givan opened Green Ink in an artist’s studio on West Main Street, selling handmade leather handbags and other accessories. Once she began attending trade shows, she found additional designers to carry in the store along with her own work. After six years in the studio, Green Ink moved down a few doors to a larger space. Around this time Givan’s daughter Bethany began working there as a jewelry and accessory buyer. In 1987, the mother-daughter dream team moved into an old hardware store on Brown Street, expanding once again. Over the next 22 years, the “by women for women” boutique established their own unique style, attracting a loyal customer base. “We have grown up with our customers,” says Mazza. Then, just two years ago, they moved again. The 3,200-squarefoot building allows Mazza and Givan to show their collection of natural clothing, shoes, accessories and jewelry in a bright cheerful space. And with their new collections of baby clothing and books, there is something for everyone to love. The walls of the store are decorated with paintings and seashell-framed mirrors, which are made by Givan herself and sold at the store. The outside shines just as brightly with a funky green door that matches the sign, and potted greens that match the store’s name. The co-owners are planning a birthday party for the store in the fall. However, if you want to stop by before the birthday party to see what’s in store for spring, you will be welcomed by a bright pop of color in addition to their signature, earthy neutrals. “The biggest trend this year is that all of a sudden there is a lot of color. The past few seasons were more about wardrobe basics,” says Mazza. “It’s good to have a little pop of color for spring!” So with happy clothing, happy owners and a “Happy Birthday” just around the corner, there is every reason to stop into Green Ink and take home some cheer of your own. Charlestown’s oystering boom What’s not to like about oysters? They are my favorite fast food. Served ice cold, they go great with beer or wine or even a craft cocktail. Their briny taste reminds me of warm summer days at the beach when I was a kid, and getting hit in the face with a wave. And then there’s all that talk about them being an aphrodisiac. They have an air of mystery and sophistication. Here in southern Rhode Island, the oyster industry dates back to the 1700s. The production of oysters peaked around 1911 when 1.3 million bushels were landed. Shucked, those oysters would be worth about $135 million today. Oystering went into a serious decline in the 1920s, and the industry suffered a crushing blow with the Great Hurricane of 1938. Many oyster companies never reopened. It wasn’t until the 1970s that there was renewed interest in local aquaculture. Since 1996, the number of farms has grown from six to 28, with oysters dominating the field. The old oystermen say there’s no better place to grow oysters than Rhode Island. The newest oyster farmer on the local scene is Matt Behan who operates the Behan Family Farm, a three-acre oyster and clam aquaculture operation in Charlestown’s Ninigret Pond. Matt, who has a bachelor’s degree in aquaculture from the University of Rhode Island, runs the farm with his father. In the past year, the two men planted 150,000 oysters. The first batch of seeds was planted on April 1, some of which grew into full-size oysters by September. Matt is a fan of the Eastern cupped oyster, which has a very deep cup in which the oyster meat and natural juice lie. This year, Matt hopes to plant 400,000. The way things are going, it won’t be long before Matt has to hire people to help him maintain the farm. He expects this to be “a break-out year” for his business. He will also start raising slower growing clams, quahogs and littlenecks, which should be ready for harvesting next year. Behan Family Farms is a model of sustainable seafood production in the Northeast. Right now, you can sample Matt’s oysters at a number of local restaurants: Oyster Club in Mystic; Olympia Tea Room in Westerly; Matunuck Oyster Bar in Matunuck. He hopes to be selling his organic oysters to the consumer at farmer’s markets starting this summer.

WHAT’S COOKING We recently stopped in for lunch at the Celestial Café in Exeter’s Oak Harbour Village on South County Trail (Route 2). We hadn’t been there in years, and we were really impressed with the clean, modern look of this suburban restaurant. A spotless dark hardwood floor and grayish-blue walls set the stage for the light-filled dining room. Many of the white linen-topped tables and chairs are a comfortable pub height. The long granite-topped bar offers 20 seats. Now 10 years old, the café has become a destination for people who know good food. The Celestial is known for its monthly farm dinners and its bistro menu, which is served Thursday through Sunday with a cost of $35 for five courses. All the food is very creative – sweet potato wontons, ginger scallops and citrus pesto calamari are among the appetizers; entrees include everything from jambalaya to Peach Marsala. We thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches – Nana’s Grilled Chicken with sweet red pepper pesto,
mozzarella, mixed greens and a balsamic reduction, and Homemade Chicken Salad with green onions, roasted red peppers and honey Dijon mayonnaise, both on grinder rolls. The Rhode House is opening in the Kingston Emporium, 99 Fortin Road, in the former space occupied by Varanasi Indian Restaurant. The owner is Karen Boutros, who also owns International Pizza in the same strip mall. TLC Coffee Roasters in West Kingston will open a second location in West Bay Plaza at 904 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. Owner Ken Marot said the new shop will offer fair trade and organic coffee, espresso drinks, muffins and scones.

We spent a lot of time on the West Coast, in New York City and in New Orleans, where smoothies are extremely popular. In these locations, smoothies are not just a beverage but a lifestyle. Ruth was a long distance runner and triathlete, and all three of us are cyclists. We often ride our bikes to and from Smoothy Booty via the South County Bike Path.

What makes your smoothies unique? Many businesses offer smoothies. However, for the most part, our competitors’ smoothies are derived from from frozen mixes or powdered blends that are not natural or healthy. All of our smoothies are made fresh to order, from unsweetened fruit and fruit juices. We also feature green, coffee, green tea, chai and dessert smoothies.
Will you continue to feature live music in your new location? We hope to. We’ve loved welcoming bands such as Occidental Gypsy and Saddle Up the Chicken! It’s a familyoriented venue where anyone can come in and enjoy a smoothie and some great music. However, when we offer music, it is also perfectly acceptable to bring your own alcoholic beverage.
What is your favorite smoothie? My wife’s is the Calico Jack (peach-mango) and mine is the Poop Deck (chocolate-peanut butter-banana). Calico Jack is an indescribably delicious smoothie that inspires Maui fantasies. Poop Deck is satisfying and filling, and leaves me energized without eating a meal.

A Fresh Taste A chic makeover for a familiar Narragansett spot at 21 Pier Marketplace in Narragansett a number of times, and each visit was to a different restaurant. It started out as Woody’s, with a menu that combined Euro bistro and regional New England cuisine. More recently, it was the Cheeky Monkey, offering global cuisine and primateinspired artwork. It is now called SoHo, and it’s most deserving of your attention. SoHo is a small contemporary restaurant, within walking distance of the historic Narragansett Towers and seawall, where you might want to stroll before or after dinner. The new owners, the extended DelFarno family, have made the most of the given space with lots of pub-height tables and chairs in the colorful lounge and more formally set tables in the intimate dining room. A bold red is the accent color here, from the hostess station to an abstract chandelier and an oversized vase. Interesting art adorns the walls. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was happy and upbeat. We could not have been treated more royally. We received warm greetings from the staff, an offer to hang our coats and our choice of any table in the house – what a refreshing change from so many other rigid establishments. When you go to SoHo, I hope your waiter will be Yool. He’s everything that the perfect waiter embodies. For instance, when I asked for a glass of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay ($9), he offered me a taste of a less expensive white wine. I was happy to try it and decided to stick with my original request. I can’t remember the last time that I experienced that kind of gesture in a restaurant. The traditional Italian food in this modern eatery turned out
to be just as impressive. First things first: an ultramodern stainless steel bowl containing two kinds of warm bread was brought to our table, along with a small dish of garlic-infused olive oil. I was told the whole-grain bread is from Buono’s Bakery, and the other is from Crugnale’s. A nice touch – they actually asked if we wanted more bread. Remembering both our mothers’ words, “Don’t fill up on the bread,” we graciously declined. Only a handful of local restaurants have Fried Smelts ($9.75) on their menu, so we just had to order them as one of our appetizers. I’ve had this dish before so I was surprised at how chewy these smelts were. But this didn’t discourage us from eating every single one, garnished with hot pepper rings and a generous splash of vinegar. Our other “app” was another one of those dishes that I just have to order if I see it on the menu – the trendy Sirloin Meatball ($8.50). Bigger is not always better, but here that was the case. Made from an old family recipe, this oversized mound of ground beef was nicely cooked, not a bit dry, and topped with a zesty tomato sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. It was more than the two of us could consume, so we asked to take the rest home. Our waiter said he would give us some of that Italian bread to take with us so we could make our own Italian subs the next day – how nice was that? On to the main event: Brian ordered the Veal Florentine ($20), and I selected the Cod Toscana ($18.50). I was served fresh local cod that had been sautéed with mushrooms, shallots, artichoke hearts and capers, and a lemon and white wine sauce. On the side were

chunky mashed potatoes and one of my favorite vegetables, broccoli rabe. The Veal Florentine consisted of tender veal cutlets, spinach, mushrooms and rosemary in a shallot cream sauce. Yool asked if Brian would like his linguine to be topped with more of the cream sauce instead of the usual red sauce. What a wonderful suggestion. That is how that dish should be served all the time. A wide assortment of desserts is available, from the very Italian to the decadent. We chose one from both categories – the traditional Sicilian Ricotta Pie ($6) and the Death by Chocolate Cake ($8). The moist wedge of house-made ricotta pie was served chilled, and it had just a hint of orange flavor. The chocolate cake was massive, enough for four people to eat, and one of the very best chocolate cakes we’ve ever had – fresh, moist, and studded with dark chocolate morsels. It was definitely to die for. As we’ve been known to do, we also ordered a pizza to go – the basic SoHo Pizza ($9.50), topped with sliced black olives (for another $1). We enjoyed it the next day after zapping it in the microwave oven for a mere 15 seconds. This was an ultra-thin tomato and cheese pie, with a surprisingly sweet sauce. We would have liked a lot more olives on top of the pizza. Chatting online with Anthony DelFarno, I was told they make their own pizza dough.
Andrew Curado, with more than 20 years of experience cooking here and abroad, is the executive chef. “Our formula is simple,” DelFarno said. “We use only fresh ingredients. We cook the classic Italian dishes the way they were meant to be prepared – simple and not overdone. We cook to order so we can accommodate any customer request even if it’s not on the menu. If we have the ingredients, we will make it.” Yool stopped by our table now and then, checking to see if we were happy with our dinner. Other wait staff also checked in, making sure our water glasses were full and at times just making friendly conversation. This is the kind of attentive service that can turn a new customer into a regular patron. And they serve a 10-ounce martini. Now that’s reason enough to visit SoHo. This fundraiser, held each year in downtown Westerly, features 20,000 rubber ducks that are released (or, in other words, dumped) into the river from a large payloader truck. The rubber creatures then “race” to benefit over 45 area schools and non-profits. You can sponsor a rubber duck for only $5. Try your luck – you could win one of over 90 great prizes. And even if you don’t win, at least you have donated to a great cause. There will also be children’s games, food booths, exciting rides, fun activities and face painting. Their genre-defying band, Sarah & the Tall Boys, have won the hearts of all who’ve seen them jam onstage. Influenced by such musicians as Lucinda Williams and Neko Case, they classify themselves as an Americana, blues, country and rock band. At last year’s Rhythm and Roots Festival at Ninigret Park, they sold close to 340 CDs. They’ve been invited to perform at the Strawberry Music Festival in California alongside legends Alison Krauss and Robert Earl Keen. Love, Loss, and Laughter small town, big hearts at granite Theatre Small towns have their
charms, but not for Brian Henning. The errant husband in Norm Foster’s The Affections of May can’t get back to the big city fast enough. He misses the anonymity of urban living, and hates the rural place where his wife has chosen to open a bed and breakfast. As he gripes of the locals, “These people stop and talk to you, only they’ve got nothing to talk about. The weather. How many times a day can you talk about the damned weather?” Plenty, as it turns out. But for Brian’s wife May, that’s part of the appeal of Grogan’s Cove – a tight-knit community similar to the Grover’s Corners of Our Town. So she stays, even after her husband takes off, and tries to make a go of it. It’s unclear which aspect of her new life will prove more challenging – running an inn in a sleepy village without many tourists, or remaining single in a sleepy village without many single women. Watch May’s story unfold at the Granite Theatre of Westerly this month. Produced by Renaissance City Theatre, Inc. and directed by Brian Olsen, the play is an entertaining tale about embracing change – and each other. The characters deal with tough issues: breaking up, moving on, re-learning how to trust, regaining self-confidence. But thanks to a comic script by contemporary Canadian playwright Foster, the show never takes
itself too seriously. The jokes range from practically slapstick to downright dirty, and they keep rolling in right up to the last minute. Lorie Olsen of Westerly, in her theatrical debut, stars as May. Director Olsen (no relation) reports that this talented newcomer nailed the audition to nab her first part, and now will be seen onstage for almost the entire duration of the play. Frank Pendola of Westerly plays her heel of a hubby, while Wakefield resident David LaRocque tackles the role of a new love interest named Quinn. In The Affections of May, Brian Henning’s loss is Grogan’s Cove’s gain. Of course, most South County residents already know that he picked the wrong side in the small town versus big city debate. After all, who doesn’t prefer friendly faces, weather talk and hunky handymen?

“I didn’t used to consider myself a landscape artist,” says Alexandra Kent, a painter and illustrator whose Jamestown studio is a converted garden shed surrounded by Rhode Island Red chickens. Kent always preferred painting people and animals back when she studied Illustration at the Art Institute of Boston. “Then I moved to my grandmother’s house in Jamestown. It’s just so beautiful here, and I started painting people and animals at the beaches and on the farms.” Eventually, her focus evolved and now she’s known for her beautiful ocean and rural farm landscapes. “However,” Kent says with a laugh, “I’ll paint anything.” “Some artists prefer to be alone, and to work alone,” Kent says, “but not me. I love to talk and I love being around people.” She says that one fun aspect about painting is that it can be tweaked to suit the client’s wishes. “If you want daffodils in the foreground, you can have daffodils in the foreground,” she says. “I once did a mural for the owner of Roch’s in Narragansett. He wanted me to paint the view from Casey Farm looking to the ocean… with watermelons in growing in the foreground.” “Jamestown has a lot of beautiful farms,” Kent says. She often travels to Windmist Farm to paint, daughters in tow. “In the spring they have baby goats. They let my daughters and me come play with the goats. They also have chickens there, which we obviously
enjoy.” If there was ever a woman who loved chickens, Alexandra Kent she is. Kent loves being outdoors in her garden, watching her daughters and their friends play with their well-mannered feathered friends. “Our chickens are so nice,” Kent says, “You could lean down, pick one up and cuddle it.” Figuring that since the Rhode Island Red is the state bird, “If anyone should love chickens as much as I do, it’s Rhode Islanders,” Kent expanded beyond the canvas and began creating chicken illustrations, which she’s printed on reusable tote bags and peel-and-stick bookplates. The grocery bags are heavy-duty, washable and high-quality; they’re sold at locations throughout the state including Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown, Picture This in Wakefield, Dave’s Floral Design East Greenwich and Allie’s Tack and Feed in North Kingstown, amongst others. Kent sells her bags, bookplates and paintings directly, as well. “I decided to bite the bullet and pay for an ad in a national magazine called Backyard Poultry. It’s been fun,” she says, “I’ve gotten calls from people all over the country. I don’t take credit cards, just checks.” Kent pauses and laughs. “Luckily, you can trust chicken people.” Alexandra Kent’s studio is located at her home in Jamestown.
