KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER We Know What Moms Want!
Ready To Ditch Your “Mom Hair?” You promised yourself you weren’t going to be like other moms. You would be the one to maintain a great body, a successful career, a killer wardrobe and a trendy hairstyle. But somehow between the car pool and Sponge Bob you’ve replaced your chic hair with “mom hair.” Celebrity hair stylist Hallie Bowman describes this as the “soccer mom” look. “It’s short-ish, above the shoulders, chin length, layered and usually tucked. Think Martha Stewart,” she says. But with just a little professional tweaking and the right finishing touches, we can help turn your look from frazzle to dazzle. At Kenneth Cote, we know that even though you’re busy you still want to look your best. And caring for yourself shows confidence and self-esteem to others, including your kids. The good news is we can update your “mom hair” with a few usually minor adjustments. Our goal is to help you look fantastic with a minimum of effort that won’t take precious time away from your busy schedule. So call us today. And while you’re getting rid of your mom hair, ditch the mom jeans too! With input from Deborah Dunham/Stylelist.com

It isn’t easy to score a membership at one of southern Rhode Island’s numerous private clubs. First, you need to know people – the right people, ones who are willing to sponsor you through an arduous application process. Then there’s the length of time you’ll likely spend on a waiting list. And if you finally get through those steps, there’s the none-too-simple matter of paying for membership. Better to live vicariously through our cover story, “Members Only,” which goes behind
the gate to get the inside scoop on what happens at these posh, exclusive institutions. Take a peek. We won’t tell anyone. Now that the weather is finally warmer and spring has actually taken hold, there’s a lot to get outside and enjoy in May. From May breakfasts to a kids chalk-drawing day in East Greenwich to spring celebrations at the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and the Tomaquag Indian Museum, there’s bound to be something you’ll love this month. Enjoy. -Julie

A Big Success
So Effective
Thank you so much for including photos from The Big Party in the So Happening section of your April issue (“Social Network”). This was a very important fundraising event for our organization and we are thankful for the coverage you provided. Ocean House was the perfect venue. Daniel Hostettler and his team provided a fantastic experience for each of our guests and we were excited to show off this amazing property to the hospitality industry.
I just wanted to say a quick thank you for the great article on Saw Mill in your magazine (“The Real Deal,” March 2011). You really covered all of our features perfectly and we have already had a great response from the article. Thanks again!
I just wanted to let you know how successful the ad we ran in the January issue of your magazine proved to be. Beauty and the Bath featured our (now famous) Boa scarves and we immediately sold out of them within three days of the magazine hitting stands – and subsequently sold through two more orders since then! Our phone was ringing off the hook with “Do you still have the Oprah scarves? What colors do you have left?” The feedback we get from So is more than we get from any other print advertising we do. So many of our customers read it, and it brings us new clientele as well. We were thrilled to learn that you can now read every issue online page by page, and shared the link on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ beautyandthebath) for our out-of-state followers to read. You guys are doing a great job with your editorial and covering all that’s new and hot in South County and beyond. Bravo! It’s great to pick up a local magazine and actually learn about new stores, restaurants and events happening that we never knew about.

T
hey have embellished the thrones of hundreds of dynasties, graced Crown Jewels atop the brow of kings and adorned the tombs of mighty emperors. As a symbol of wealth and power they are unsurpassed. Carat for carat, they are the most expensive gems in the world. With their sparkling green luster they are considered to be more precious than diamonds. They are emeralds, the most prized of all gems. Because the intense green color of emerald is the color of spring, the ancient cultures prized it as the gemstone symbolizing love and rebirth. Treasured for over 4,000 years by different civilizations all around the world, emerald is said to quicken the intelligence as well as the heart. Legend gives its owner the gift of eloquence. Emerald jewelry is thought to bring many things to those lucky enough to wear it. It has been said that the sparkling green light of this gem has healing powers and also brings good luck to those who own one.

For a Flawless Face The big day,
that special night, a TV interview – these are times you want to look your absolute best; flawless, in fact. Luckily there is an artist in Southern Rhode Island who can offer you the same treatment the stars get: airbrush makeup. Jennifer Hodge of Spectrum Makeup Artistry holds a master’s certification in the airbrush technique. Hodge has been a licensed cosmetologist since 1994 but added the Temptu line of airbrush makeup three years ago after training at the company’s headquarters in New York. This past fall she completed the advanced program. “As technology made rapid improvements with high definition television and razor sharp camera lenses, I wondered how the actors, models and television personalities were still looking so good,” she says. “The answer was airbrush makeup.” The makeup is carefully blended to your skin tone and it goes on light as a feather. Once on, it looks and feels like skin and does not run, smear or need touch-up. It lasts through sweat, oily skin and high heat, making it perfect for studio lights or an August wedding. It doesn’t feel tight or dry on the skin, but can cover bruises, tattoos (or create one) and skin conditions like Rosacea, to create a truly flawless look. Because it is so stable it is a favorite among brides who know they won’t have to touch up their makeup or worry about it staining their dresses. Even though it is highly durable it washes off with soap and water. Although her studio is in Wakefield, Hodge travels all over New England providing makeup for production studios, television stations, politicians, photo shoots and theater productions, in addition to weddings and special events. “Many of the weddings I do here in Newport and Block Island or Boston are actually destination weddings of out-of-staters,” she says. “But more locals are becoming aware of the airbrush process.” Sounds like it’s time to get the star treatment. To view her portfolio and find out more about her services visit www. spectrumri.com. –Marylou Butler

Learn From the Master The fresh scent of flowers is surely a wonderful sign of spring. In the spirit of the season, the Plum Beach Garden Club is hosting an afternoon with Constance McCausland, award-winning floral designer and nationally accredited master flower show judge. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 10 at noon at St. Paul’s Parish Hall in Wickford. A light lunch will be provided at 11:30am, so arrive early. Famous paintings and stories of the artists will be the inspiration for the charming arrangements. To attend, make a reservation by Friday, April 29 by calling Sue Kresinksi at 295-5943, or emailing her at sueannk200@aol.com. Tickets are $10, and the afternoon will include a r affle of arrangements and garden items. Don’t miss this chance to feed your creative spirit and learn to create your own fragrant masterpiece from the very best. 55 Main Street, Wickford. –Erin DeVito
COMMUNITY EVENT
A Sale for Sails Ahoy, matey – a boat sale is in town! Sunday, May 1 marks North Kingstown High School Sailing Team’s fourth annual Nautical Yard Sale. The event will run from 8am-noon at the North Kingstown Town Beach. Come browse the wide selection of clothing, boat hardware, electronics, small boats and more. Fresh baked goods and coffee will also be available for purchase. “This sale has been our big fundraiser for the past several years and among other things has enabled us to upgrade our fleet from six to nine boats,” says Samira Hakki, a parent advisor for the team. “Having more boats allows us to get more kids out on the water.” The team sails out of Wickford Yacht Club, which generously allows the students to use its facilities. If you are a boater doing your spring cleaning and have anything to contribute to the sale, contact the team at NKsailing@gmail.com and they will pick up your generous donation. Enjoy the sand and sun while supporting a group of young, ambitious sailors. 150 Fairway Drive, North Kingstown. –Erin DeVito

COOKIN’ – By Linda Beaulieu –

he more you pay, the more you get. That old saying holds true, especially when it comes to cooking classes. If you hope to learn a great deal and dine splendidly on a complete meal, you’ll want to consider the hands-on, three-hour courses that are offered around South County. For many people, however, less is more. If you’re after a glass of wine and the chance to hobnob with other foodies while watching a young chef demo a signature dish, then the cooking classes at Trio should be on your to-do list this spring. This Narragansett restaurant, through its Fare Rewards program for customers, holds cooking classes on a monthly basis. Fresh pasta was the theme for a recent class taught by Chef Tim Sousa. In about an hour’s time, he made a basic ravioli and mushroom linguine from scratch as a group of wine-sipping food lovers watched. Trio’s classes – really more of a demonstration than an interactive class – have been overwhelmingly popular. Every class sells out, and there is always a waiting list, according to Jennifer Reagan, assistant general manager at Trio. These “classes” turn into laughter-filled mini-parties: the $10 class fee includes a complimentary glass of wine for each student as well as tastings of the dishes prepared by the chef and his staff. The happy crowd is encouraged to “make a night of it and stay for dinner,” and most do, with their $10 fee credited toward their meal that night. At Trio, these gatherings take place in a prep kitchen usually off-limits to guests. Well-prepared for the fresh pasta class, Chef Sousa showed the crowd how easy it is to turn durum flour, eggs and water with a splash of olive oil and a dash of salt into fresh pasta. His “students” were encouraged to feel the pasta dough he created. Its texture was soft and elastic. One ball of dough was used to make a classic ricotta-filled ravioli, while the other dough was infused with powdered mushroom and then cut into ribbons of linguine. As the pasta cooked, the group moved back into the heart of the restaurant to gather round a long granite-

Tim Sousa, chef of Trio in Narragansett, shows his class how to make fresh pasta topped table. In minutes, they were sampling the tender ravioli in a fresh marinara sauce and the savory mushroom linguine drizzled with melted butter. Both dishes were served family-style on large platters. “Excellent” and “fabulous” were the comments from the students in between bites of food. Because of the restaurant’s busy summer season, Trio’s cooking classes will wrap up this month and then resume in the fall. For someone willing to invest more time and money in a cooking class, there are two worthy of your consideration: Cooking Classes with Donna Dubé in Saunderstown and Chez Nicole Cooking Classes in Wakefield. Donna Dubé, former owner of Wickford Gourmet, has been doing cooking classes in her quaint home at 84 Carpenter Lane in Saunderstown for a couple of years now. Donna has taken her students on virtual trips to Provence, Sicily, Tuscany and Spain, exploring the cuisine of each region. The students are provided with recipes for everything from seafood paella and tapas to healthy soups and organic chicken. In her soup class, Donna demonstrates how soups with great depth of flavor – such as Creamy Mussel Soup with a Hint of Saffron – can be made fairly quickly and easily. With poached organic chicken, Donna shares her techniques that result in a hearty chicken soup with farro and a Greek chicken salad with feta, olives and green beans. Other cooking class topics have been cooking for one or two with healthy ingredients and how to

Eager students learn French-inspired cooking at Chez Nicole make pesto, spreads and concentrated stocks. The classes are three hours long, and the cost is $60 per person. Nicole Spaulding divides her time between her homes in southwest France and here in the States, where her husband is an ocean engineering professor at the University of Rhode Island. Now that her children are grown, she has the time to conduct cooking classes that are basically French but not the least bit fussy. Her recipes are surprisingly fast and easy. Nicole offers about a dozen classes a year, usually on Saturday mornings, with only a handful of students at each session to ensure that everyone is involved. The class fee is $75 per person. The students are provided with all the required ingredients, original recipes and chef aprons, which they can keep. Each class concludes with the group gathering in the dining room for the feast they have created under Nicole’s tutelage. The three-hour classes are held in Nicole’s well-equipped kitchen, and she is a fountain of culinary tips. Stale bread is easy to revive – just run it under cold water and throw it in a 400-degree oven for 10 minutes. Always keep your garlic in the dark so it doesn’t develop green sprouts. Duck legs are available at Stop & Shop, and duck breasts can be bought at Dave’s Market; buy them whenever they’re available and freeze for future use. Drain the liquid whey from plain yogurt and save it in the refrigerator to make the best pancakes ever. Nicole is passionate about using only the freshest ingredients and making dishes that are healthy and delicious. On a recent Saturday, the menu seemed daunting: Belgian Endive Salad, Salmon Rillettes and Butternut Squash Soup for starters; Duck Breast with Apples and Roasted Duck Legs with Mixed Root Vegetables for the main course; and Dark
Chocolate Cups and Fresh Strawberries with Drained Yogurt for dessert. Nicole insists on “cleaning as you go,” so the airy kitchen is relatively tidy when the group sits down to dine. As the prep work came to an end, bottles of white and red wine were opened, and the tasting began. The salad was a celebration of all things green – from the endive to the avocado to the Granny Smith apple – in a basic vinaigrette dressing. The rillettes is a country-style spread that goes well on French bread. Until today, cooking duck seemed so formidable, but here it was, not once but in two guises. The accompanying apples were a sweet counterpoint, and the potatoes (both Yukon Gold and the sweet variety) were perfumed with lots of garlic and shallots. It was the dessert, however, that truly astounded the amateur cooks at the class. The small white ceramic ramekins containing chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate were baked for a mere 15 minutes in a hot oven. The semi-sweet results left everyone speechless. On the side, the fresh strawberries, marinated in red wine and black pepper (yes, black pepper) were over-the-top good. All in all, cooking and eating was a wonderful way for friends to spend the day together. SET SAIL Landlubbers need not apply at local yacht clubs
P
erhaps the most famous of the many yacht clubs that call Rhode Island home is the august New York Yacht Club in Newport, one of the oldest sailing clubs in the country. (Founded in 1845, if you’re keeping score.) It’s also the place where the America’s Cup was born about 160 years ago. The most famous of its many commodores was J. Pierpont Morgan who had some important observations about yachting, including his most memorable quote: “If you have to ask how much the yacht costs, you probably can’t afford it.” The same undoubtedly applies to the blue-blooded NYAC, but the famous financier also had some more positive thoughts about what makes sailing and life on the bay so special to so many. “You can do business with anyone,” he observed. “But you can only sail with a gentleman.” This probably explains why boating is such an integral part of the Ocean State. Newport remains the epicenter of serious East Coast sailing with its three well-known yacht clubs. In addition to the ritzy NYAC, there is the Newport Yacht Club on Long Wharf and the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, a more family oriented facility, on Wellington Avenue. Neither are slouches in the tradition department either, the former having been
founded in 1894, the latter a mere 83 years ago in 1928. However great the boating scene in Newport may be, however, it is also crowded and a bit more impersonal than the more secluded sailing spots that dot Narragansett Bay. In terms of joining a yacht club, well, it’s all about fitting in – literally and figuratively. There needs to be room for your boat, especially if you want dock space. While some clubs have plenty, others remain fully booked. Most clubs are somewhere in between. Fitting in socially of course is an entirely different matter. You’ll need to find a sponsor. And, of course, you need to decide if you like the members. One longtime sailor we know suggests the best way to determine the right fit is to volunteer to be crew during one of the weekly races most clubs hold. Additional crew is almost always welcome and members are generally at their least pretentious with a post race drink in their hands. So here are some of our favorite local private yacht clubs, plus short takes on what we think makes them so special. As an extra, we’ll even throw in one club that most anyone can join and is so special, it doesn’t even bother to have a place it can call home.
A Sailor’s Life Founded in 1891 in the heart of the Jamestown harbor, the Conanicut Yacht Club has a rich and storied tradition. Part of its original roots date back to a deck of cards. It seems there was an old social club that catered to young men who loved to gamble and needed a place to call home. They merged with a small sailing group that had a clubhouse, but not many members. The rest, as they say, is history. Apparently back then, fortunes were made (and lost) in backroom card games at the Yacht Club, where players only occasionally looked up to shout, “Here they come,” as the boats sailed by interrupting their game. The club enjoys a wonderful reputation for its social events (the Snow Dance and August Commodore’s Ball stand out), juniors programs and competitive racing. In fact their annual Race Around the Island attracts boats from all up and down Narragansett Bay and marks the traditional end of the formal racing season in September. The club also makes extra efforts to have fun too, with its Soup and Sloop Lecture Series as well as TGIF events. Like most other clubs, you need to be sponsored by a member and pass muster, which means being a seasoned sailor or convincing them you’re going to do whatever it takes to become one. 40 Bay View Drive, Jamestown. 423-1424, www.conanicutyachtclub.org

2010 - A Year of Excellence...
Anchors Aweigh There’s something very “real” about the East Greenwich Yacht Club. Perhaps this is the result of its location smack in the middle of Narragansett Bay. As a result, the club attracts some sailors who like the island hopping that’s so much a part of Rhode Island’s sailing scene, as well as cruisers who will head south to Newport and then out to more exotic destinations like the Vineyard, Maine or the Block. The club is probably the largest in Rhode Island, boasting over 450 members. While moorings remain available, there’s a 15-year wait for slips, we’re told. Started in 1909, the club celebrated its 100th anniversary just two years ago. They pride themselves on their conviviality, which includes cocktails around the clubhouse bar, Sunday night dinners and, of course, that de rigueur Commodore’s Ball. Sailor friends of ours love their Pursuit Races, when boats from all over the bay are invited to compete in a race in which the slower boats go off first, the faster boats, last. In a perfect world, with unchanging weather conditions and evenly matched skippers, all the boats would hit the finish line more or less together. This, of course, never happens, but makes for interesting post-race chitchat over gin and tonics at the bar. 10 Water Street, East Greenwich. 884-7700, www. egyc.com

Any Port in a Storm To the members who make up the Twenty Hundred Yacht Club it’s all about the racing. Started by three sailors who raced Herreshoff S boats right after World War II, this club now boasts over 200 members and 125 boats. The “club” has no permanent home but still conducts four major races a season as well as a bunch of social events, both on shore and off. This year, for example, they’ve already held an awards dinner at the DeWolf Tavern in Bristol in March. Coming up will be a Newport to Cuttyhunk race, a Newport to Block Island and back race in August, something called “A Unique Challenge Race and Steak Fry” and the traditional Charles Dickerson Race around Patience and Prudence Islands. The organization is usually successful at getting another club to host them, often Wickford and East Greenwich, since the Twenty Hundreds pride themselves on both their competitive skills and their conviviality. The best part of the club? It’s dirt cheap to join. Membership is all of $60 per year, plus another $60 if you’re going to race. It doesn’t get much better than that. 120 Lantern Lane, North Kingstown. 294-6725, www.twentyhundredclub.org

All Hands on Deck One of the smaller but most user-friendly clubs is the Wickford Yacht Club, located right in Wickford Harbor. Its membership numbers about 100 families and it tends to be quite laid back. The group sponsors two major races each season, the Wickford Regatta, held this month on May 21-22, and a West Passage Regatta toward the end of July. The club takes particular pride in its junior programs and more intimate atmosphere. One great advantage of joining a smaller club is that most Rhode Island clubs extend reciprocity to each other, so sailors can expand their landing sites dramatically when cruising. Wickford, like many other local yacht clubs, also encourages group vacation cruises to nearby ports of call. Pleasant Street, Wickford. 294-9010, www.wickfordyc.org

HIT THE LINKS You’ll need to bring more than your short game to these private golf clubs
T
here’s always been something special about Rhode Island and golf. Until the last year or so, Rhode Islanders could often been seen near the top of the weekly PGA leader boards. Billy Andrade. Brad Faxon. One of the Quigleys, either Brett or Dana. And, of course, there’s the CVS Golf Classic held each year at Rhode Island Country Club that has raised millions for local charities. Despite all this interest and the presence of a few nationally rated private clubs – some of the best of which are in South County, by the way – memberships in
all but the very fanciest clubs have been under assault. That doesn’t necessarily mean getting in is a gimme, mind you, but it does mean that the price, especially in terms of initiation fees, has leveled off, and in some cases declined. That said, new applicants still must run the gauntlet of member approval to get in – and be able to afford it. So without further ado, we’d like to tee up some of the best designed and maintained clubs for your consideration. Game on.
Tee Off Shelter Harbor is arguably both South County’s newest private club and most visually spectacular. It also is among the area’s most expensive to join. Built in 2005, the course was listed among the top 50 new courses in the country when it was built and, if anything, has gotten even better as it has grown in. Ironically built on a site that was once considered for a nuclear facility, the course is just a short wedge shot or two from the Block Island Sound. It also boasts an unusual punchbowl green that makes for some amusing planning as well as three outstanding finishing holes: a par five along the water, a tricky par three over the water and an 18th that skirts the water as it takes you back to the clubhouse. From the tips, the Shelter Harbor plays over 7000 yards, so it is both beautiful and challenging. The club has a gorgeous 44,000 square foot clubhouse that has what can best be described as a Shinnecock-like traditional look, despite being just five years old. Initially, initiation fees were in the six-figure range and its members read like a who’s who of the local Connecticut and New York financial community. Like other local courses, those fees may have come down, but probably not much. Among the original incorporators of Shelter Harbor is Charles M. Royce, the successful New York financier who now frequents Watch Hill and is responsible for the spectacular renovation of the old Ocean House resort. 1 Golf Club Drive, Charlestown. 322-0600, www.shgcri.com
Par for the Course
In the Swing of Things
While Shelter Harbor may be the newest of the area’s exclusive country clubs, Misquamicut is probably the oldest. Founded in 1895 and designed by Willie Anderson, the course enhanced its golfing pedigree with a redesign by the legendary golf course architect Donald Ross in 1922. Despite its longevity and eye-popping beauty, the course seems to keep to itself, a welcome refuge for its members, most of whom frequent the Watch Hill area. In the past, the majority spent their non-summer time in places like New York or Philadelphia, but increasingly, we’re told, members are spending more and more time in the Westerly-Watch Hill area, some actually moving in full-time. What makes Misquamicut a particularly wonderful club to join is that they also have a tie-in with the Misquamicut Beach Club (“The Club,” it’s called) as a place to dine or beach out. Recommendations and pedigree remain important, but the spectacular setting, which has been home to many member weddings and galas, the interesting holes (we love the bumpy first hole with its undulating fairway) and access to a handsome beach club make Misquamicut an almost archetypical country club experience. 60 Ocean View Highway, Watch Hill. 348-8213, www.themisquamicutclub.com
While Shelter Harbor and Misquamicut tend to be Watch Hill-centric, Point Judith is more Narragansett in focus. Its historic roots however are second to none. Also founded in 1895, this course too was designed by the legendary Donald Ross. His mantra was to create holes that were “high risk, high reward.” That means the green side bunkers are challenging. Additional bunkers also fiendishly appear in fairways apparently for no other purpose than to devour errant tee shots. However, the course is significantly flatter than the two Watch Hill courses and, not being on the water, lacks their visual drama. The club boasts members who have seemingly been there forever. There is a handsome clubhouse and tradition – lots of tradition. Again, you need to find sponsors if you want to join. 150 Windemere Road, Narragansett. 792-9760, www. pointjudithcountryclub.net

Plan B: Semi-Private/Public Alternatives There are other private courses in the vicinity that provide excellent golfing experiences… Warwick Country Club and Weekapaug in Westerly (which has added a spectacular new dining room/clubhouse by the way) are two. But if you just want to just go out and tee it up, you might want to check out nearby semi-private alternatives. The prices aren’t bad and, except for mornings on the weekends, getting on the course is usually doable. Among our favorites: Winnepaug in Westerly (another well-designed old Donald Ross course), the new Meadowbrook course in Richmond that opened last year, Fenner Hill in Hope Valley and two well-regarded stand-bys… Richmond and Exeter. You’ll enjoy the courses and save a little money… unless you give it all back in side bets.

A SHORE THING Sunbathe at your own private beach club
O
ne of the best things about living in the Ocean State is, of course, that we really are an Ocean State. Generations of Rhode Islanders play back wonderful summer memories that took root amidst our crashing (well, maybe make that “rolling”) surf and postcard perfect white sand beaches. While there are innumerable state and town
beaches available, there are also a wide range of private beach clubs where lifelong friends, not to mention stunning tans and body surfing skills, have been developed over the decades. Here are some of our favorites that run the gamut from the very posh to the very kid-friendly. Hope it helps you decide where to plant your blanket or beach chair.
Life’s A Beach A Rhode Island institution, the Dunes Club is at the top of the beach club food chain. It boasts an exquisite main building that has been host to countless social events, weddings, anniversary parties and birthdays since 1928. Part of the appeal of the club is that it offers something for everyone: a great beach (of course), cabanas, tennis (both hard court and clay), fancy dining, casual dining, poolside dining, game rooms for the kids – you name it, they’ve got it. The club caps membership at 800 so as to not overtax the facilities. To get in as a member, you need to find a sponsor and then go through a detailed application process, but because the club is always fully subscribed, the “getting in” part can take time. The irony, of course, is that this fanciest of beach clubs adjoins the regular Narragansett Town Beach. Still the Dunes Club remains both timeless and impeccably maintained, which is why there’s probably no better place for that signature summer social soiree. The facilities were pretty much gutted during the Hurricane of 1938. Only the original caretaker’s home and the swimming pool remain of the original club – unless you count the membership, some of whom are into their third and fourth generations, and still proudly consider the Dunes Club their summer home. 137 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 783-3351, www. thedunesclub.org

Sharing the same coast as the Dunes Club and Plum Beach Club is Bonnet Shores. Bonnet Shores Beach Club stretches along 1700 feet of waterfront, and offers an 85,000 gallon pool, restaurant and weekend entertainment. Membership in this club is contingent on privately-handled property ownership: members own bathing cabanas, bathhouses or live-in condos, and each comes with a limited, specific number of member passes. There are, however, ways to get into the club, at least temporarily. It’s possible to rent a cabana from a member for part of the summer – renters enjoy all the benefits of membership, including swimming lessons, tennis lessons and an outdoor restaurant. Or, once the club opens for the season at the end of this month, you can make friends with a member – for the rest of us, a much-buzzedabout invitation is the score of the season. 175 Bonnet Point Road, Narragansett. 783-2832, www.bonnetshoresbeachclub.com
Secrets can be tough to keep for even a few days, but Plum Beach Club claims it’s been a secret of Saunderstown residents since 1938. Nestled at the mouth of Narragansett Bay, this private beach is simple and family-friendly. The club prides itself on being unpretentious and welcoming members from all walks of life. It is governed by an elected board, and though it has a dedicated staff at the facility, member volunteers also pitch in, which helps keep the club affordable for all. The club is emphatic about being a place to bring the kids, offering an enclosed swim area and swim platform on the beach, a certified lifeguard on duty seven days a week, a snack bar with separate eating area for children, and swim and tennis lessons taught by certified instructors. It’s truly a down-to-earth alternative to the more rarified and stuffy atmosphere found at many clubs. 224 Plum Beach Road, Saunderstown. 787-0077, www.plumbeachclub.com

“I can’t stop the aging process. But I can make it less stressful. I’m Jenny Miller. I’ve devoted my life and career to assisting seniors and people with disabilities. My goal is to help them maintain their well-being, independence and dignity. If you or your family aren’t sure where to turn, how to gather information or who can help—then get in touch with me today.
Even if you’re not a frequent viewer of Sex and the City, you might remember hearing about the episode when Samantha got a terrible chemical peel, making her face look as though it was dragged for hours across a rug. Despite the (perhaps unfair) association chemical peels have gained, when they are done properly, they can drastically improve the skin. One medical spa encourages customers to consider a variety of chemical peels and other cutting-edge skin therapies is SeaMist Skin Rejuvenation Center in South Kingstown. Nestled in South County Commons, SeaMist is owned and operated by Ellen C. Scobie, a registered nurse who performs non-invasive medical aesthetic skin procedures ranging from Botox to hair removal. I don’t have wrinkles yet, but I do not, by any stretch of the imagination, have perfect skin. Being frightened of chemicals touching my face, I tried to schedule an appointment for microdermabrasion, another form of skin therapy offered at SeaMist. Scobie said she needed to see my skin first, however, and encouraged me to schedule a consultation. Upon our first meeting, Scobie carefully evaluated my skin and determined that I was not a candidate for microdermabrasion, but rather the dreaded chemical peel. Despite its ominous sound, Scobie explained that chemical peels are actually more suitable for a wider variety of skin types, while microdermabrasion is more invasive and only used on thicker problem skin. Scobie said the chemical peel, which could be altered in potency, would be best for my fair, dry and acne-prone skin. We also talked about what kind of products I was
using to clean my face, what makeup I was using, and the current concerns I was having with my complexion, giving the experience a holistic feeling. After a thorough consultation I came back the following week for my chemical treatment. Scobie explained that she’d be using a low-percentage lactic (milkbased) chemical peel. My face was first washed thoroughly with a special scrubbing brush. Then, the lactic acid was applied for two minutes. Scobie said this would remove the dead layers of skin, which like wax, continue to build on our faces as we age. After a feeling I can only compare to Icy-Hot, Scobie cooled my skin off with a rose and chamomile spray and a refreshing five-minute masque. While I have very sensitive skin, my face calmed down rather quickly after my peel. The whole procedure took about 30 minutes. Once my peel was completed, I received instructions on how to best care for my new skin. Because my pores were cleared out and my skin was more “open, Scobie suggested I try to avoid a lot of sunlight. As dead skin would be coming off, Scobie said it would be normal to see some flaking in the next few days. I could tell how supple my skin was becoming after the peel, and was glad I had the treatment performed by a medical professional rather than an esthetician. I also noticed how soft my skin was and saw how the stubborn dry flakes on my forehead had been cleared. Who says Sex and the City has all the answers anyway? 36 South County Commons Way, South Kingstown. 7822400, www.seamistrejuvenation.com

People will be buying more sandals as the summer months arrive. What would you recommend for a day at the beach? We carry a variety of mush flip-flops and strappy nylon sandals, which are all machine washable and very comfy. Teva flip-flops are the only brand I can wear because they offer support unlike other brands. Wearing them all day at the beach or for a full day of work is just as comfortable. Are sandals appropriate for fancier occasions? Yes, most definitely. Sandals have become the summer fashion must-have, whether it’s a flat sandal like a fancy flip-flop or gladiator, or a patent leather, peep-toe, high heel, strappy sandal. Everything goes these days. We sell cork wedges in white or gold (or any other color) with rhinestones to brides and their bridesmaids. Flip-flops have become the trend for beach weddings, whether they’re fancy or casual. We have all heard the phrase “pain is beauty,” which is often associated with shoes. Your saying is “the most comfortable shoes around.” How do you combine comfort and fashion? That saying is so outdated! Our companies recognize the need for comfort and support and fashion. Sofft and Softspots are the two fanciest brands we carry. Both have a thick, foamy footbed and a thick sole, so there’s substance and support under the foot, which makes them wearable for the entire day.
What is a trend that you like this season? Color – lots and lots of color. For the past few spring/summer seasons it was all about black and brown and metallics. Those colors are all still popular, but the brights, like turquoise and coral and green, are even more so. White is also huge this year. The saying “Don’t wear white after Labor Day” is out of date as well. It’s perfect for a very colorful outfit and its simplicity is really very elegant. Some people do not want to spend a lot of money on shoes. What do you offer for women on a budget? Are there benefits to spending a little more money on shoes? Although there are definitely benefits to spending a little more money on shoes, there are some brands that are a little more comfortable on the wallet. Softspots has some styles that won’t break the bank. Teva also has some styles that are very reasonable (and very comfortable). Even companies known for being a little pricy have come out with lower price point options, like Birkenstock. It is true though that you get what you pay for. When you go for a style such as Naot or Keen, you feel the difference as soon as you put the shoe on. The level of support and comfort is unsurpassed by any other shoe. We find that these brands are a worthwhile purchase, regardless of the price. Carrie and Diane own Carrie’s Shoes, 26 High Street, Westerly. www.carriesfootwear.com

Carol Pratt, owner of Carol’s Country Corner, knows the definition of “country” well: “homey and comfortable.” Modern can be cold, but country is warm with fabrics and wood, she says. Born and raised in the Dutch Country of Pennsylvania, Pratt has the first hand knowledge to bring her customers a truly “country” experience. Growing up surrounded by stores like hers made owning her own a long time dream. Sixteen years ago, when she bought what was once The Country Peg, that dream came true. Country style is not about living in the past, Pratt says, but rather “a reminder of childhood and family.” One common misconception is that country items are old, similar to antiques. To the contrary, Pratt says the majority of items are new, but often made to look old. All of the furniture is reproduction, handmade in New Hampshire; her one-of-a-kind primitive dolls are also new, handmade in Florida and Pennsylvania. The layout of her store is unique. “I have it set up by room rather than by product,” Pratt notes. A claw foot tub designates the bathroom area; an old stove signals where

There is a children’s area with toys and stuffed animals, as well as a table and books to occupy them during their visit. This varying décor contributes to the country feel. “Nothing matches and you need to look for things [by walking] through the whole store,” beams Pratt. She decorates for every holiday. Typically her shoppers are collectors, whether it is baskets, signs or bunnies; she says that holidays bring out more of this. Christmas is the biggest holiday, of course. “It is a time for celebrating and for family,” Pratt says. “That’s what country is.” She goes above and beyond during the season with seven different decorated trees and an array of Christmas items. Even after the holiday season, Christmas items can be found yearround in the Christmas room. Even the building and neighborhood contribute the down home atmosphere Pratt is creating. The old A&P building still has the original entrance, tin ceiling and
tin walls from 1927. It is one of the key buildings in historic Apponaug Village, a location that’s perfect for a country store. Owning her own business gives Pratt the opportunity to give back to her community, something she relishes. She is the president of the Apponaug Village Association, whose mission is to preserve and improve the community and support local organizations with similar missions. She is hosting a food drive to benefit Rhode Island Family Shelter, and is a supporter of the Rhode Island chapter of the ALS Association. Buying local is also part of the country ethos: Pratt sells only Americanmade products, and the closer they are made to Rhode Island the better. She also prefers to do business with mom and pop owned companies as opposed to corporations. However, her first concern is simply to get the best product for her customers. With “shop local” a constant rallying cry nowadays, maybe country’s not so old fashioned after all. 3293 Post Road, Warwick (on the East Greenwich line). 732-5651, www.carolscountrycornerri.com

Reinventing a family house for the future Quietly sitting on a manicured hilltop not far from a nearby pond, the sound of children’s laughter echoes from the depths of a picture-perfect white ranch dotted with black shutters. For Maggie Fauci, it’s the sound that, ripe with a sense of déjà vu, makes the house a home. “My father used to say, ‘Some day this house can be for you, your husband and your kids,’ and I was 17, so it was like, Yeah, right,” laughs Maggie, her slight frame seemingly even more petite under the nine-foot ceilings in the foyer and throughout the home. Her parents, immigrants from Portugal’s Azores Islands, bought the home in 1987. She met her husband, Marc, after college, and the newlyweds settled outside Boston as their young family grew to a party of six. (The children are now two, three, five-and-a-half and seven.) When the couple considered moving back to Rhode Island, it became clear that Maggie’s four-bedroom family home would be the ideal place to raise their little ones – after some much needed 21st century design and function upgrades. The family turned to Patti Watson of Taste Design in Jamestown, charging the designer with the challenging task of maintaining the home’s integrity and making it succeed for a family of six
while staying within budget. “I needed things to flow,” explains Maggie, adding that being able to improve interior visibility (i.e., keeping an eye on four energetic kids) was key. But she didn’t just want the house to just look like a picture-perfect showroom. “To just make it all new or change it all would have made me sad.” Watson was thinking more practically than eco-friendly when she embraced an adaptive reuse ethos throughout, using or modifying as many original elements as possible. In the dimly lit foyer, Watson had skilled craftsman cut out the upper half of the entry’s double doors and inlay beveled glass to let the natural sunlight illuminate the room. Where light wasn’t an issue was the living room, home to an approximately 12’ long by 6’ high glass window, an original feature of the 1950s home. Dated green carpeting was replaced with hardwoods. Muted earth tones for wall color and thoughtful furnishings merge the expansive views of the outdoors with the interior. On the wall, all-white original wood millwork in a grid pattern is decidedly modern looking, setting the perfect backdrop for an oversized photo on canvas of the children. The photo was taken not long after the arrival of baby Nina, the youngest. “She completed the family,” Maggie
says, looking up with a smile, “and the picture completes the house.” In the same room, a side table and pair of chic sconces frame a treasured watercolor that hangs on the wall. “This is,” says Maggie, fighting back tears, “a picture of the family home, the town of St. Michael in the Azores.” (It’s by artist Arthur Moniz of New Bedford.). She goes on to speak about how much her cultural heritage has meant to her, how it’s a fundamental part of hers and the family’s life. “It’s been a challenge to incorporate my culture into my house, and that’s why it was so great to work with Patti, because she found things like this,” beams Maggie. Watson, as it turns out, tracked down the local Portuguese artist whose work now means so much to the family. “I could have never done that by myself,” notes Maggie. Walls were knocked down in the kitchen and dining room by FurtadoMedeiros Construction Company of Middletown to blend the two spaces seamlessly. The couple kept the ample original cabinetry, giving it a fresh coat of paint, and added a contemporary, chocolate-tile backsplash and expansive granite countertop. A completely custom island was added and a high-top table with seating for six has become Maggie’s favorite part of the house. She

says she wanted a casual place to chat with the children, talk about their day at school and enjoy meals, but without having to always use a formal dining table. “For this family,” says Watson, “this is their great room. It all starts at the table and emanates out.” Off the kitchen is a casual living space with a comfortable sectional couch, television and play space for the children. Removing built-in bookshelves and cabinetry, a fresh coat of wall and trim paint over the existing wormwood finish, new carpet and tailored window treatments updated the space without breaking the bank. Bedrooms were updated with new hardwoods and new paint: pink and lavender for the girls, blue for the boys. The three upstairs bathrooms were all updated without major work – just new paint, new fixtures and all freshly reglazed tile. The spacious master allows
ample room for the couple to relax and soak in panoramic views of the landscaped backyard and a meadow in the distance. From years of the family visiting grandpa and grandma in the home (or “vavô” and “vavó,” Portuguese for “grandpa” and “grandma”), Maggie says the post-redesign transition has been smooth for the children. Though Maggie’s parents’ new home is just about two miles away, she says this house, new aesthetic and all, will always be their home. “When my dad comes in, he’s treated like a rock star,” she laughs. “The kids just go wild. [My parents] are just a part of our everyday life.” Looking around at the house, dotted with happy memories and making more each day, Maggie’s pride is palpable. She tends to her son’s question, laughs, and notes with assertion, “I’m completely at home here.”

Keeping an Ocean State tradition alive May breakfasts abound in Rhode Island on or about the first of May. May is to Rhode Island what July is to the rest of America. On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island was the first colony to declare itself independent of the British crown. To mark that event, the state observes Heritage Month every May with May breakfasts playing an important part of that tradition. But the state’s legacy just might be on its way to endangered species status. Back in the 1980s, there were dozens of breakfasts scheduled throughout the state. These days, there are but a handful. Of course, the mother of all May breakfasts is the one held by the Oaklawn Community Baptist Church in Cranston, now in its 144th year. On Sunday, May 1, head to the fellowship hall at 229 Wilbur Avenue for a quintessential May breakfast experience, which includes family-style eggs, ham, cornbread and clam cakes (yes, clam cakes) plus homemade mile-high apple pie and fudge as well as May baskets. Servers are always dressed in Quaker costume. As many as 1,000 people usually attend. The cost? A mere $7 for adults and $4 for children. The annual event runs from around 6-11am. Call 944-0864 for more info. There are plenty of other events for your consideration this month, starting with a spring fair on May 1 at the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace in North Kingstown. Corn grinding will be demonstrated, and Carpenter’s Grist Mill will be serving jonnycakes. Call 294-3001 for details.
On Saturday, May 7, a Corn Planting Moon Celebration will take place from 1-4pm at the Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum, 390 Summit Road in Exeter. Corn-related foods will be served. Call 539-7213 for more info. The Taste of the Towers, celebrating local caterers, wineries and breweries, will take place on Friday, May 13, from 7-9pm at The Towers in Narragansett. Hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served. Music and a cash bar will be on tap. Tickets are $30 per person in advance, $35 at the door. For details, visit www.thetowersri.com. At the Bay Voyage Inn in Jamestown, a Waterfront Wine Tasting is scheduled for 6-8pm on Friday, May 13, featuring wines from Australia and New Zealand paired with small plates of food. Call 423-2100 for details. That same weekend, May 13-15, is the time for the Misquamicut SpringFest in Westerly with a carnival and international food court at the state beach. A TASTE OF THE TOWN The East Greenwich Rotary Club’s wine and food fundraiser has evolved into an event that this year features food from some of the town’s most popular restaurants, plus wine from The Savory Grape. Now called A Taste of the Town, it is scheduled for Friday, May 20, beginning at 6:30pm at Swift Community Center. Wine will be paired with food from La Masseria, Café Fresco, Chianti’s, 1149, Wild Harvest, Greenwich Bay Gourmet and other local restaurants.
Custom beers will also be available. Tickets are $35 per person or $190 for a party of six. They are available at the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce at 580 Main Street. For more info, call 885-0020 or 885-2421.

Summer will be here soon. How much more peace and quiet do you think the locals will have before the tourists arrive? Chris: Probably about another month or so. Kristy: If the sun is out, there are people out. The sea wall outside is already starting to fill up on the nicer days. You have both a casual outdoor deck and a more formal indoor dining room. What drink would you recommend for each situation? Kristy: For the deck, a salted margarita or frozen piña colada. In the dining room, I would recommend the apple crisp martini: it works perfectly before, during and after the meal. What are some of the most popular warm weather cocktails at your bar? Chris: Specialty margaritas, like the Coast Guard House Margarita, and frozen drinks like mudslides and strawberry daiquiris. Can you recommend some good warm weather options for beer drinkers? Chris: Quite a few – everything from Bud light to Blue Moon, and anything seasonal like Sam Adams, Wachusett, or Drifter Pale Ale, which I enjoy because it is a heavier beer.

How about wine lovers? Chris: During the day, something refreshing and crisp, like pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc. In the evening, try reds such as a cabernet or pinot noir. Kristy: A nice cold bottle of rosé.
What’s one summer cocktail you love and one you’d like to see retired? Chris: I like the specialty Coast Guard House Hurricane. It is refreshing, but has a nice kick to it. Kristy: I love the dark and stormy, and sour mix can be retired. What’s your advice for men who want to enjoy a good summer cocktail, but don’t want to be seen drinking something pink with an umbrella in it? Chris: The hurricane is a good option, but you’d be surprised how many guys come in and order a mango daiquiri. There is no shame on the deck – people drink whatever tastes good. What’s your advice for someone who’s entertaining at home and wants to make a good summer punch or sangria? Chris: Find the right balance between the booze and the other contents. Be mindful that you are already using a lot of sugar when selecting an alcohol. Kristy: Use a lot of fresh fruit in the drink and as a garnish. Finally, what will you be drinking this summer? Chris: I love the Summer Irish Pear. It contains whiskey, but is also a light, refreshing outdoor drink. Kristy: White wine spritzers with fresh lime or lemon juice. Reintroducing a Classic A Jamestown institution gets a new chef
Photograpy: Hilary Block
If you haven’t been to the Bay Voyage Inn in a while, get yourself over there for dinner as soon as possible. There’s a new chef and a new menu definitely worth experiencing. We arrived at the Bay Voyage Inn just as the restaurant opened for dinner service – so early, in fact, that the waitress scheduled to work that night had not yet arrived. I appreciated that the manager was totally honest with us about the situation, and she tended to our needs quite well until the ever-smiling Karen arrived. Once a private home, the Bay Voyage Inn was built in the mid-1800s. Now a Wyndham hotel, the inn retains much of its original Victorian charm and elegance. Its restaurant has seasonal hours and is now gearing up to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner during the high summer season. The Bay Voyage is especially known for its award-winning Sunday brunch. The new dinner menu might be somewhat limited, with only seven entrees, but many of the dishes are intriguing. From the appetizer selection, the mussels are steamed with bacon and hard cider, and calamari comes in two very

different versions: fried with pickled vegetables and tomato vinaigrette, and stuffed with spinach and a green olive salsa verde. This most certainly is not the Bay Voyage that we have been to many times in decades past. For our first course, we chose the Salt Cod Croquettes ($6) and the Gorgonzola Frites ($7). I must confess I would order those croquettes again and again, as long as they are on the menu. Three to an order, they were delicate to the point of falling apart. These more-thana-mouthful bundles of salt cod (which was not the least bit salty) and mashed potatoes with seasonings were encased in breadcrumbs and then fried ever so gently. A generous smear of peppadew aioli sat on the oblong plate, and we made good use of it with every bite. The frites were wonderful, but rather strange as an appetizer. These skinny hand-cut fries served with a dreamy Gorgonzola fondue would be more appreciated if served with a juicy burger or hanger steak. Yet that didn’t hinder us from downing every single one. The menu offers the usual French onion soup and New England clam chowder, but instead we opted to share the
Spring Beet and Arugula Salad Spring Beet and Arugula Salad ($8). The tender arugula, with its rich and peppery taste, stood up well to the other components of this salad – red and golden beets, plenty of tangy goat cheese and balsamic syrup dressing. Shaved carrots and radishes garnished the salad. The entrees (priced at $15 and up) include a grilled bone-in pork rib chop, Statler chicken (that’s a boneless chicken breast with the drumette attached, a dish that originated at the Boston Hotel Statler in the 1920s), native haddock, cioppino (fish stew), and for vegetarians, a pasta dish with smashed fava beans. We watched the pork rib chop land on a nearby table, and it was nothing less than magnificent. Our choices were the Grilled Rib Eye (the most expensive item on the menu at $26) and the Crisp Skin Filet of Salmon ($18). The flavorful steak was generous in size and cooked medium as requested, a real meat-and-potatoes kind of dish with dangerously delicious fingerling potatoes flavored with morel mushroom butter. A few prized morels – a sure sign of spring, the only time these wild mushrooms are available – were scattered on the plate, easily recognized by their honeycomb-like appearance. On the other side of the table, the thick salmon filet, perfectly cooked and quite moist, sat on top of a mound of Yukon Gold potato puree. Adding interesting flavor and texture to this dish were plump fava beans that had been cooked with shallots and bacon. The new chef, Casey Shea, clearly is one who offers seasonally inspired food
with a strong farm-to-table connection. Our desserts were a couple of triedand-true favorites: Molten Chocolate Cake with whipped cream ($9) and Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting ($6). They were fine, satisfying that sweet tooth that demands attention after a truly great meal. The lava-style cake was rich enough for two to share, with an almost crunchy surface and a gooey center of dark chocolate. What looked like a rather small serving of carrot cake turned out to be just right, rich and super moist and studded with crushed nuts. As we ate every bit of our desserts, we noticed that the dining room with a water view from every table had filled up. We prefer to dine on the early side, mostly to avoid that 7pm crush of customers. At the Bay Voyage, dining before dark also provided us with a sweeping daylight view of Narragansett Bay. Dozens of boats bobbed in the water at their moorings. As the sun set in the west, the Christmas tree-like white lights of the Pell Bridge began to twinkle in the twilight. It made us appreciate our little Ocean State and one of its very best restaurants. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

May 1 You’re usually so happy to greet the day – ecstatic even – which explains why you’ve completely worn out the snooze button on your alarm. But for the 7th Annual May Dance performance by the Ladies of the Rolling Pin, it’s time to make an exception, unbury your head from the covers, and gloriously arrive where the land meets the sea, even if it is at, gulp, sunrise. (No one will judge your bed head.) Today, Rhode Island’s only Women’s Border Morris Dance team, founded in 1998, whoops it up for about an hour with joyful movement harkening back to their roots in agriculture, as a way to awaken the earth for the growing season. The success of the local crops depends on you. If that’s still not motivation enough, there’s a potluck breakfast afterwards with coffee. 5:42am. Free. Take It to the Streets May 7: We all know that it’s never healthy to stereotype – so, East Greenwich, huge apologies in advance. But you do understand that, unfair or not, there’s a vision of suburban kids frolicking exclusively on lush green lawns, safe playgrounds and parks in your charming town. So when we hear about kids taking it to the street, pardon us if we feel a little anxious. Truly our bad – because with the Arts on Main Chalk Drawing Contest there’s no reason to worry. Sure, kids in three age brackets – 8-12, 13-17 and 18 and up – and families are competing on their hands and knees to create a masterpiece in a four-by-four foot square where traffic would normally ride by, but as long as this doesn’t become an every day occurrence, it’s all good. Noon-4pm. Free. Town Hall, Court House Lane and Peirce Street, East Greenwich. 885-0020, www.shopeastgreenwich.com.

Still Odd After All Putting a new spin on a classic comedy As a wise man, also known as my father, once said, “People are hard to live with, and some are harder to live with than others. But we’re social animals, so we keep trying.” Playwright Neil Simon puts his own spin on this age-old human folly in The Odd Couple. When circumstances lead two unlikely friends to room together, they try their darnedest to co-exist peaceably in one apartment. But what sharing space saves on rent, it costs in sanity. Minor irritations stack up fast, building to a hilarious breaking point. Doors slam, insults fly, and at least one plate of spaghetti flies, too. When the dust settles, it’s anyone’s guess whether friendship can survive cohabitation. The Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant stages the female version of Simon’s hit comedy this month. Like their male counterparts, Florence is an uptight neat freak and Olive a laid-back slob. No wonder things get ugly. The Newport Playhouse production stars Sandra Nicastro as Olive and Sandy Cerel as Florence. At the beginning of the play, Florence’s husband leaves her. Sad to see her friend so desperate, wretched and alone, divorcee Olive offers Florence a room at her place. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished – especially in this show. Their personalities clash immediately, perhaps most clamorously on a double date with some sizzling Spanish neighbors, the Costazuela brothers. Director Tony Annicone, fresh off his role as the Rabbi in Newport Play-
house’s Bermuda Triangle, takes the helm. He knows The Odd Couple well, having directed it three times before for other local theaters, including two productions of the female version. He thinks the story bears repeating because playwright Simon’s characters and humor resonate with audiences and keep them coming back. Such funny, escapist fare is the norm for the family-owned Newport Playhouse, Rhode Island’s longest running dinner theater. Here, as their slogan proudly states, “Every show’s a comedy!” Of the appeal of this particular play, Annicone notes, “The laughter is nonstop.” If you’ve never been to the Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant, expect a full evening of entertainment that includes both a play and a lively post-show cabaret. Come early to indulge in the pre-show dinner buffet. And, in the case of The Female Odd Couple, consider bringing a notepad. You may want to take the folks back home a few reminders of what not to do when living with others – especially if they live with you.

Surrendering to the Sea How one artist finds peace in nature
Photography: Marylou Butler
Lightning strikes,
massive waves begin to thrash upon the rocks and a storm instantly unleashes its gloomy presence on Rhode Island. Everyone watches from the comfort of their cozy homes, while one woman climbs those slippery rocks and makes sure she captures the entire moment. Retired pediatric nurse/teacher and local artist Tricia Marcaccio makes sure she never misses a storm. She thrives upon what Rhode Island’s nautical life has to offer, even on those not-so-sunny days, which is why one of her pieces, entitled After the Storm, is a memorable one. “I am hopelessly in love with the sea and it never fails to captivate me,” she gushes. “I love photography as well, so when there is a storm you will often find me climbing on the rocks by the water searching for that perfect wave photo.” After retiring six years ago, Marcaccio began taking art classes in watercolor and oils. She fell in love with art and has since been able to find peace in her creative side – “especially the free spirit of watercolor,” she adds. “The way it flows into its own space, it is a constant challenge.” That challenge is not evident in her paintings, and the way the colors so effortlessly blend. Her approach to her work is a well executed one. “My palette usually reflects nature’s gentleness and fury in soft hues and muted, sensual colors,” she explains. “I often begin my work as a sketch along with several

photographs, but there are times when I just follow the flow of the paint.” Just like the sea, Marcaccio’s pieces seem to have a natural, beautiful flow. She and her husband enjoy sailing the East Coast, from Narragansett Bay to Cape Cod and the Long Island Sound, never missing an opportunity to experience the beauty of the sea. The quintessential Rhode Islander, Marcaccio is an artist member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the East Greenwich Art Club and the Wickford Art Association, exhibiting her work with all three. She has also been accepted into many juried exhibits, as well as national shows and has received quite a few awards over the years, including three first place awards at the Wickford Art Association (one for After the Storm). You can view Marcaccio’s work at Voila Fine Art Gallery on West Main Street in Wickford, where she will have an opening on Friday, May 6, from 6-8pm. You can also view her work online with the East Greenwich Art Club and the Watercolor Society at www. eastgreenwichartclub.org. Marcaccio offers the following advice to other aspiring artists: “Make the time to pursue your dreams, give yourself the license to make mistakes, and practice, practice, practice forever. We are all creative individuals. The strongest virtue is to have the passion to paint; the rest will come.” Contact Tricia Marcaccio at 486-1737, or email her at marcacciotrish@gmail.com.
