KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER We’re Putting Your Health & Safety First Breathe Easy
Trust Kenneth Cote to offer you effective treatments that will allow you to enjoy smoother, shinier, frizz-free hair this summer without taking unnecessary risks.
Would You Wear A Gas Mask While Getting Your Hair Done?
As extreme as it may sound, salons across the United States and Canada are using gas masks as a “safer” alternative for clients undergoing the popular Brazilian Keratin hair process. Last month, the smoothing treatment came under fire when the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (or OSHA) found significant levels of formaldehyde in the Brazilian Blowout solution. Like an ostrich with it’s head in the sand, some salons have ignored the warnings. Other salons, in order to keep both stylists and clients safe, have begun implementing goggles, gloves and gas masks as protective measures, keeping those performing and undergoing the treatment, out of harm’s way. We ask, are you willing to wear a gas mask and risk your health just to reduce frizz?
Perfection SmoothOut
Unlike some trouble-filled smoothing products, Perfection SmoothOut delivers the results you want without the formaldehyde that you don’t want. This new smoothing and de-frizzing treatment safely transforms your hair to a new softer look and feel. Results typically last 2-3 months and you can enjoy the results immediately. Cost: $199
At Kenneth Cote, we refuse to put you, or our staff, at risk when there are safer, effective alternatives. We will not compromise our reputation or integrity nor your health or safety.
Many Popular Smoothing Solutions Contain Excess Levels of Formaldehyde
Health Canada has issued warnings that many professional hair smoothing solutions have been found to contain formaldehyde above the safety limit set by Health Canada. Formaldehyde is permitted as a preservative in cosmetics at levels of no more than 0.2%. Several popular smoothing treatments have been banned in Canada, Ireland, California and nearby Connecticut. Listed below are the formaldehyde levels found in several popular smoothing treatments which exceed safe levels. This is only a partial list:
Brazilian Keratin Treatment by Marcia Teixeira Adv. Brazilian Keratin Treatment by Marcia Teixeira Extreme De-Frizzing Treatment by Marcia Teixeira Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment by Coppola Global Keratin Taming System by Global Keratin Pro-Collagen RX Keratin Treatment Advanced Keratin Treatment by IBS Beauty Brazilian Thermal Reconstruction by Cadiveu Keratin Express Blowout by Coppola Brazilian Blowout by Brazilian Blowout
1.8% 1.7% 1.6% 1.8% 3.0% 2.8% 2.3% 7.0% 1.7% 8.4%
Health Canada has advised salons to stop using these products. And at Kenneth Cote that’s exactly what we did. If your salon is still using these products, you should be coming to us for safer alternatives. Become a friend of Kenneth Cote Renewal Center on Facebook!
KeraGreen Organic Keratin Treatment
We are pleased to offer you a pure organic keratin smoothing treatment which is ideal for those of you seeking a “greener” alternative to frizz-free hair! KeraGreen Keratin & Protein Hair System is a smoothing treatment that works on all types of hair while offering a high level of protection and reconstruction. With this treatment you can go out on a rainy or humid day as well as enjoy the beach while still having soft, shiny and manageable hair. This smoothing system has the added benefit of preventing hair loss in men and women thanks to the L-Cystine ingredient in the products. The ingredients in KeraGreen are of the highest quality and it’s plant-derived keratin and other vitamins and minerals deliver superior benefits without any health risks. It has a safe formaldehyde level of just 0.0011% which is compliant with Health Canada standards. This treatment provides soft, silky, more manageable hair for 2-4 months. Cost: $249

esembling the silver light of the full Moon, ancient people believed Moonstones were actual rays of moonlight that had solidified, and that the shimmering light was held suspended within the stone. Due to its association with water, Moonstone is said to be protective of those at sea. It is also protective of those that travel at night, and was once called the “Traveler’s Stone”. It was also thought to protect against insanity and any adverse wanderings of the mind. In many cultures, moonstone is strongly associated with love and fidelity. It is a highly prized gift for lovers as it is thought to arouse tender passion. Lovers who possess a moonstone are said to be able to foretell their future life together. One legend is that two people wearing moonstone will fall passionately in love when the moon is high. Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite are all birthstones of the month of June.

From the Editor After what may have been the longest wait ever (it certainly felt like it, anyway), summer is finally here – and we don’t want you to waste a minute of it. Our annual summer guide is all about adventures: take a hike, enjoy a bike ride, hit the waves… just get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather for as long as we have it. If you’re really willing to go outside your comfort zone, we’ve got some extreme adven-
tures – from kiteboarding to skydiving – to keep you busy and on the edge of your seat this season. If your comfort zone is, shall we say, a bit too confined by the threat of imminent danger for you to be jumping out of any planes, live vicariously through the experiences of the brave souls who are willing to put it all out there for the sake of our entertainment: in our feature, Marylou
Butler goes behind the scenes at this season’s Theatre by the Sea auditions. Some of the faces you see might just end up on stage later this month. Also, make sure to check out our special publication, SO Block Island, in the middle of this magazine. It’s got everything you need to know about the island, whether you’re visiting for a day or a week. Enjoy the season. -Julie

Narragansett’s newest attraction spins you right ‘round A beautiful Victorian
Carousel will be joining the go-karts, bumper boats, batting cages and mini-golf at Adventureland in Narragansett this summer. The carousel was made in the United States by Chance Rides of Wichita, Kansas. It is 28 feet wide and includes 1,500 lights. It is a traditional canopied design with elaborate scrollwork and mirrors to reflect the riders. In addition to the beautiful horses, there is an iridescent dragon, a tiger, a penguin and, of all things, an anteater to ride. For those who want a little more action, there is a spinning cup as well. The Kells family, owners of the park, used all South County businesses to help make a home for the carousel. Nancy Leslie of Leslie Architects in Wakefield designed the building housing the attraction. Nate Point of Point Builders was the building contractor. “He had a terrible winter to build and started out six weeks behind
schedule,” Melissa Kells-Burdick notes. “Yet he got the job done ahead of schedule with help from Jedi Electric of Peace Dale, Harris Plumbing and E. F. McGovern landscaping of Narragansett.” Arnold Lumber of Wakefield supplied the building materials, and South County Fence of Narragansett did all the fence and gate work. Burdick’s ice cream, cotton candy, pretzels and carousel t-shirts will be available in the Carousel Pavilion. A seascape mural by local artist Janice Causey of Matunuck will provide the backdrop for children to be photographed in a rowboat. The Blessing of the Carousel grand opening will be held Sunday, June 5 from 1-4pm and will feature popcorn, face painting, balloons and a chance to “name a horse” for the summer 2011 season. Plan ahead for a fun day to welcome the newest attraction to Narragansett. For more information visit www.adventurelandri.com. –Marylou Butler
Smart Shopping

Loyalty Has Its Rewards We all have our favorite local shops and restaurants, and many of us remain loyal customers to them for years on end. It might be that the food is cooked to perfection, there is an attractive cashier who works the morning shift, or that the turkey sandwich is made on the best crunchy bread. What it all comes down to, though, is the money. Something would be inherently appealing about earning a few bucks back with the purchase of my daily iced coffee. If you were told that your loyalty to a particular joint would reward your wallet, wouldn’t you try that place out? What if it was a list of places, and all these rewards
were free with access to a valid credit card? Rhode Island native Angus Davis’ Swipely offers just that. His new company (founded in 2009 and revamped in February of this year) encourages shopping at local merchants in order to gain repeat visits; he does this by creating a middleman that offers incentives, cash back rewards, and loyalty points to credit card-using customers. By signing up online at www.swipely.com consumers around the state can learn the benefits of participating. Users can even share their shopping experience on Facebook or Twitter and write reviews. -Christopher Sionni

Behind the scenes at Theatre By the Sea’s summer auditions Story and Photography by Marylou Butler The nervous energy sounds like a hum in my ears upon entering the lobby of the Fine Arts Center at URI. The room is full of dancers and actors of all shapes and sizes waiting nervously to to audition for the summer season of Theatre By the Sea in Matunuck. The hopefuls display various ways of coping: some stay in groups with their friends, endlessly stretching their limbs; others are off by themselves, headphones on to block out the hum, knitting, reading, even sleeping. They are all united by one thing: the dream of being on stage. This is just one of the rounds of auditions for TBTS. The producers and directors have already been to the South Eastern Theater Conference, searching not only for on-stage talent, but also for a variety of technical crew and interns. After URI they will head off for two weeks in New York City looking to cast the lead roles. These local auditions bring out mostly college age theater majors who are hoping to impress enough for a big role, but would be thrilled with landing anything. A group of classmates from the Hartt School – the music, dance and theater division at the University of Hartford in Connecticut – got up at 5am this day to take the road trip to Rhode Island for the big chance. For Hannah Spacone of Providence, this is her second time trying out for Theatre By the Sea, making her the veteran of the group. She is
hoping to land the role of Penny in the production of Hairspray. This seems to be the show that most of the people here want to land in. The auditions don’t work that way though. The actors aren’t trying out for specific roles. The decision makers – Producing Artistic Director Aimee Turner (who will direct two of the productions), Managing Producer Joel Kipper and Dance Director Russell Garret – will be on the lookout for the best fit for the roles in all four of this season’s shows at once. Someone who thinks he is the Man of La Mancha may find out that the directors think he is better suited as Vice Principal Douglas Panch in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Everyone attending today seems to have either college or community the-
ater experience, at least. Tom Lavallee of Pawtucket was actually cast last year in A Chorus Line at Theatre By the Sea. This year he hopes to replicate that success by being cast in Hairspray. After auditioning he has to run because he is appearing in a show at the Newport Playhouse the same night. Brittany Santoro of Cranston, a junior at Wagner College in New York, was knitting to pass the waiting time and stay calm. Although she goes to school in New York, she was on vacation break and decided to attend the audition. Jeff Buco, who will be graduating from Rhode Island College this year, has a TV credit as an extra on the new show Body of Proof in addition to his theater experience. The tension rises as the announcement comes for certain singers who al

ready tried out to come back in for the dance auditions. After all, when you are performing musical theater, you have to be a triple threat: skilled at dancing, singing and acting. Whoops of excitement punctuate a crowd of crestfallen faces. Everyone seems to know which parts the callbacks are being considered for and know their own chances just got eliminated. Babs Rubenstein of Syracuse attends the Boston Conservatory, majoring in musical theater. She is all smiles as she lines up to head back in with the dancers. She hopes to land the role of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. And five, six, seven, eight... Now it is Russell Garret’s turn to run these 33 hopefuls through their dancing paces in a very short period of time. The choreography and song are from the play that most of them want to be in: Hairspray. Many of the dance steps, including the pony and the mashed potato, date to a time period before even some of their own parents were born. A lone piano player provides the accompaniment. He breaks the song down into small chunks and repeats them again and again before adding on more moves. With each repetition the faces go from uncertain to confident. Most of the dancers have had years of training and recognize the more common steps – like the ball change, the side step, and shuffle – and get the number down after running through it a few times.
Once the group learns the entire routine, Garret returns to the director’s table to watch instead of lead. After a few runs with the entire group, during which Garret offers some tips, the dancers are separated into smaller and smaller groups so everyone gets a good look. “Everyone needs smiles all the time,” reminds Garret. Garret is surprisingly friendly, positive and gentle with his charges. “I went through all that and it’s such a scary thing,” he says. “Dance calls can be terrifying.” Once smaller groups have been seen, everyone is herded back out into the lobby to wait out another decision. The directors start going through the headshots and sharing their observations. Sometimes the decisions are unanimous; other times it comes down to a single advocate pushing for a favorite choice. Dance ability is a huge priority, as is stage presence. There is definitely an “it” factor. Some who have “it” aren’t necessarily the best singers or dancers, but may be capable of improvement in those areas. Others who are spot-on perfect in voice or dance don’t possess the personality to connect with the audience. The singers who are also strong dancers are called back one at a time to sing again for the directors. One of the callbacks sings “I Want to Go to Hollywood”– it is passionate and impressive. Presumably that is the exact sentiment shared by most of the folks attending today; at the very least they want to make it on Broadway. Another singer has to start over because she keeps losing her place. After apologizing several times and blaming nerves, Joel Kipper reassures her by telling her she is in a room full of friends. That is exactly the feeling that Theatre By the Sea gives their patrons: we are in a room full of friends. The shows for the Summer 2011 season are The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, June 3-June 19; The Man of La Mancha, June 24-July 16; Hairspray, July 22-August 13; and The Drowsy Chaperone, August 14-September 4. Catch the wave of the summer’s most iconic sport When most people think of surfing in the United States they picture the long stretch of beaches in California, the giant tubes of water that crash upon the islands of Hawaii, the white sandy beaches of Florida, or even North Carolina during hurricane season – not the Northeast and certainly not Little Rhody. But in actuality, Rhode Island has some great breaks that suit everyone from the groms, or young surfers, all the way to the elite carvers, and has a very passionate surf culture to go along with them. Rhode Island even has its own chapter of the SurfRider Foun-
dation that is made up of volunteers with the goal of “promoting the protection and the preservation of the Rhode Island coast for the benefit of all ocean enthusiasts.” If you have never tried surfing before, I highly suggest getting out there. It is never too late and once you pop up on your first wave, you’ll be hooked for life. Surfing is more than just a sport or something to do; it is an experience. Unlike skiing, where the mountain is freshly groomed and a chair lift shuttles you effortlessly from the base to the peak, or skateboarding, where the ramp is expertly
built to the specifications already calculated to give you the perfect angle every time, surfing is between you and Mother Nature. It comes down to studying the way the waves are breaking, setting up in the lineup, timing your paddling and balancing your body. Getting in sync with the ocean to grab that perfect ride slaps an ear-to-ear grin across your face for the rest of the day. Even when you miss a wave because you are not in the right position or lose your balance and splash head first into the water, it’s still an amazing time.
Until you actually paddle out and tame those breakers, it may not make much sense to you. I hear a lot of people say, “It looks like more floating around on their boards than actual surfing,” or “All that work for a 15 second ride doesn’t seem worth it.” Believe me, it is well worth it. Everything about surfing, from waxing up the board to the time you decide to take your last ride for the day, is ecstasy. Even when you are bobbing on your board waiting for a set to roll in, you are still enjoying Mother Nature by being out in the water, basking in the sun, and soaking up

the beautiful landscapes that Rhode Island has to offer. Now that I have hopefully sparked your interest to grab a board and paddle out, you are asking yourself, Where do I go? I’ll tell you. To start off, we’ll cover the beach breaks. These are perfect for beginners because they come with a nice, sandy bottom, the average waves do not get too big to handle, and they provide plenty of parking because the majority happen to be state beaches. Some of my favorite beach breaks are Second Beach in Middletown, First Beach in Newport, Narragansett Town Beach, and Misquamicut Beach in Westerly. These all offer nice, gentle breaks coming in on calm, sunny days, allowing surfers the chance to catch some nice rides without the worries of rough surf and a dangerous ocean floor. A
good swell can range from a couple of feet all the way to ten feet high when hurricane season hits. Of course, all the great waves in the ocean don’t mean a thing if you don’t have a board. Island Surf and Sport in Middletown and Narragansett Surf and Skate out of Narragansett can set you up with everything you need, including board rentals, wet suits and lessons. Those of you with some experience looking to carve up some waves, look no further than the lighthouse out by Point Judith and Ruggles in Newport. Both offer some nice, long right point breaks, but surf at your own risk due to the dangerous, rocky bottom and surf coming in at head to double overhead heights. There are also some good secret spots out in Little Compton, but due to surfing code,
they will not be revealed in this article. For those, you’ll just have to go out on an adventure of your own or get in with the locals. No matter your skill level, where you surf or how often you hit the waves, surfing is one of the best experiences and most enjoyable activities during the summer – or even the winter for that matter (with the right equipment). From my personal experience, I have gone out surfing all day and caught 20 or more waves; I have also been out surfing all day and only caught one wave Still, I consider both days worthwhile, simply because I was out surfing. It is on your bucket list, it is conveniently located in Middletown, and it offers an incomparable view of southern Rhode Island. So why not make this the summer you finally face your fears and feel the amazing rush that is skydiving? Skydiving is a one-of-a-kind experience that stays with you for a lifetime – that I can personally attest. I decided to take the faithful jump several years back to celebrate my birthday. At Skydive Newport they make sure all you need to show up with is the guts; no prior knowledge, experience or abilities are needed. The day starts sitting in the parking lot of the airport going back and forth with your friends, wondering whose idea this was in the first place and what drove you to such insanity. Then the conversation turns to whether you should actually go through with it or not, with statements as, “I mean, all we would lose is the deposit, and what’s a deposit when we have our lives, right?” But then you’ll muster the courage, open the car door and take the first steps towards the building, leaving the rest of the group to either find some bravery themselves or be forced to endure chagrin for what could be years to come.
Once you’ve finally pushed each other inside, it’s time to quickly sign your life away on the liability release and get your training. One of the great things about Skydive Newport, but also not the most stomach settling, is the training only takes a total of 15 minutes. No long, boring lessons or tests to pass – just a meeting with the instructors, a quick run through of the procedure, and it is time to suit up. Now, you may be a little wary of the idea that the training for jumping out of a plane could be so quick and painless, but don’t worry – so will hitting the pavement. (Kidding of course.) The reason behind this crash course is because your first jump will be a tandem one. Through the passenger/pilot system the center offers, you can make your jump harnessed to a highly experienced instructor with greater safety than ever. Once the training session is over, it’s time to throw on your jumpsuit, slip into your harness and board the plane. Think the seats are cramped on today’s commercial airliners? Once you climb into a Cessna 182 strapped to another human being, you will be begging to return to the luxury of having only your knees touch the seat in front of you and just the person’s elbow next to you
occasionally knocking into yours. The ascent gradually takes you 10,000 feet into the air with a view that makes the adventure worthwhile all by itself. On a cloudless day you can see all of Aquidneck Island, the surrounding lands, and the beautiful waters around them. That nice feeling about how beautiful the landscapes are and how peaceful everything looks gets completely wiped away when the instructor announces you have reached the jump zone. The time has come. There is no turning back. The instructor opens the door and you attempt to put your first foot out on the ledge of the plane, but it gets violently blown around by the high-speed winds. Your natural reaction is to run and hide when death comes knocking and you contemplate pulling your leg back into the plane, but that’s when reality sets in: you are strapped to another human being – not just any human being either, a human being who lives for jumping out of airplanes. Before you can turn around to express your fears or say your prayers, he’s pushing you right out the door. Cursing his name and wishing you were strong enough to fight through the wind to strangle him, a surreal feeling takes over. The thought of plum-
meting to the ground at 120 mph may give people nightmares, but the actual experience is like floating in the clouds. Between the mix of adrenaline, the cool realization that you are actually freefalling with nothing but a parachute in your pack and full panoramic views, pure bliss hits you and a peace of mind allows you to fully enjoy everything you were so terrified of just an hour before. At 5000 feet, the instructor pulls the rip cord, releasing the parachute that gradually glides you through the sky to a soft, pinpoint landing right back
at the skydive center. While coasting through the air you experience something normally reserved for the birds. The instructor even lets you take over piloting the chute for a while, adding just one more spectacular experience to your adventure. Skydiving is an experience I will never forget and tell everyone about, which makes me even happier that my friends and I did not spend my birthday quivering in the car. 10 RI locations The Little Kitchen Shop is a family affair. Owner Dianne Muzalewski is an accountant by weekday, and a kitchen shop owner by weekend. Her dream is to one day leave the accounting world behind to work at her store full time, but her daughter, Krysten Byrne, runs the store when Dianne can’t be there. It all started with a love for cooking. Since she was a little girl, Dianne has had a passion for being in the kitchen. Her grandmother was always cooking; as a young girl, Dianne was allowed to play and be creative there, and as a result an interest and passion was sparked. She went on to marry a man who also had a passion for cooking and instilled that same passion in their daughter; it has always been something that their family enjoyed together. Feeling like she was spending her whole life behind a computer, Dianne sensed it was time to do something she loved – and it only seemed natural for her to open a kitchen store. Why not open a restaurant? “It isn’t about serving food to people,” Krysten explains. “It’s about getting people into the kitchen.” In this economy, it may be a pinch to go out to eat, but this store teaches people that it can be just as fun, if not more so, to cook at home with the family. “It’s okay if you don’t know how to cook,” Krysten says. “Go off of recipes or read the directions off the side of a macaroni and cheese box, but you can
play in the kitchen. Think outside the box – the possibilities are endless.” True to its name, The Little Kitchen Shop is small, but there is a lot in it. It is home to a little bit of everything: home goods, including hand-carved plates and table settings, and food items, including spices and teas. “This is any foodie’s little heaven,” Krysten says. The large selection of spices and popcorn spices allows customers to buy as little or as much as they would like, so it’s affordable to try small amounts of different things. The loose tea bar allows tea lovers to buy their favorite or a variety. Krysten says that she tries to buy local when she can: “It is important to support your community.” The honey comes from East Greenwich, the tomato sauce is made in South Kingstown on a tomato farm, and the popcorn kernels come from Providence. Even the olive oil has local ties. Although it is not made locally, a Narragansett man distributes it. He receives the Dell’Orto Extra Virgin Olive Oil from his family’s farm in Italy. The benefit to shopping at a small store is the atmosphere, the knowledge and the passion, as well as the customer service. As Krysten says, “We want customers to feel as if you are in your best friend’s kitchen when you walk in.” 176 Main Street, East Greenwich. 8850888, www.thelittlekitchenshop.com

You own The Green Door, your shop, and The Green Door At Home, your interior design studio. What is your inspiration, and how do the two interact? I have always loved retail. I first started out in fashion as a Seventeen Magazine fashion board member for a local department store in my hometown in Iowa when I was 15. Having a background in art and interior design is wonderful, as it aids me every time merchandise arrives and I need to set up new displays or a new department in the shop. Having the shop allows me to also be in the gift business, which I love. Owning the shop allows me to add all the accessories I need for designing for my clients. The best thing about the interior design part is my clients telling me how happy they feel when they love the way their home looks. What kinds of products do you sell? We sell so many different things, from every type of home accessory, to beautiful baby gifts, wedding and engagement gifts. The one comment people make all the time is, “I’ve never seen these things before.” It is my ultimate goal to search out wonderful and unusual items for many different decors. What is your favorite item in the store? That is a very hard question, but I have to say it’s the hand painted Herend porcelain figurines and china from Hungary. I feel so fortunate to be able to carry Herend. You must be approved by Herend to become an official dealer. My grandmother started my own personal collection when I was a teenager. When a shop in Newport closed about five years ago, Herend approached me. We have collectors from all over; people just marvel at the delicate and intricate designs of each piece. What are three must-have accessories for any home? I would say if you’re starting from scratch, start with an interesting area rug and pull all of your colors for the room from it. Good looking lamps can really add to a room. And for the empty dining room table, a lush, everlasting centerpiece.
What are the popular trends in home design today? Actually, there are so many different looks. I would say a common thread among all of the different styles is “streamlining.” By that I mean paring down and de-cluttering. You are well known for your custom designed, realistic silk floral arrangements, wreaths and baskets. What inspires those? My inspiration comes from my love of live florals. I use only the most realistic and life-like blossoms and stems. My grandmother taught me how to garden and my husband has given me an appreciation of gardening by creating the most beautiful Eden in our backyard. I truly believe you should only use live flowers for a wedding or when you entertain, but there’s nothing like having a gorgeous arrangement on your table day after day that looks real and never dies. You design and sell Rhode Island products. What made you begin to do this? What makes this area special? Knowing I had a design background,
one of my sales reps urged me to design the Rhode Island afghan. That was 19 years ago. Since then, I designed the Rhode Island tapestry tote bag, tapestry pillow and balsam pillow, and the East Greenwich afghan. We have so many Rhode Island products we have dedicated an entire window to the merchandise. Rhode Island is such a wonderful state and when people are traveling they love to bring something “RI” with them as a gift. June is the most popular month for weddings. What would you recommend as the perfect wedding gift? There is no one perfect wedding gift. But I have such a wonderful staff and I can honestly say they will find the perfect gift for each bride. After they ask a few questions and find out a little (or a lot) about the bride, they can recommend the right gift – be it toasting flutes, hand painted salad bowls, silver serving pieces, candle sticks, trays or ceramic platters. For one Wakefield family, life revolves around the water Twenty-six years ago, fresh out of college and new to the workforce, Karen and Howie Follett fell in love with a piece of land in Wakefield on the picturesque Salt Pond. With panoramic water views, it was an easy sell, and the adventure of building a house, and a future, was ahead of them. The surrounding neighborhood, she explains, was developed in the early 1930s. “It is a bit undiscovered — no one even knows we’re here,” she laughs. Many homes there were the former summer cottages families retired to in the warmer months in the earlier half of the 1900s. When building from scratch in 1986, the Folletts started with the first floor, where the rooms were planned to maximize the enviable vista. In the living room, a handcrafted hearth was built by a local Narragansett Indian stone mason, using stones from nearby Charlestown that were hauled to the home one by one. The second floor was left unfinished for some time until years later when the whole package was complete: a nearly 3,000 square foot home with three bedrooms, three
full baths, dining room, kitchen, den and expansive blue slate patio. The family also grew, welcoming son Brian (now 24) and daughter Lexi (now 22). More recently, the Folletts became empty nesters. “Wakefield has a lot to offer,” says Karen, reflecting on the rearing of their children in the much-loved South County village. “The kids went to a neighborhood school not too far away… and we’re just about a mile from Main Street.” And though the youngest Folletts had their separate childhood interests, the family always had one common denominator: the water. “We are a fishing and boating family, and my husband is a commercial fisherman, so we’re always on the water for work or pleasure,” tells Karen, a real estate agent at Bay Realty. With a 100-foot deep water dock protruding from where the land meets the pond and a motorboat standing at the ready, fishing, clamming, quahoging, swimming and more have been an integral part of the family dynamic. Packing lunches replete with freshly harvested steamers and quahogs, warmer

days of the year meant boating and soaking up the sun — and still do. In 2006, however, the couple looked around and decided that while they loved their lived-in abode, it was time for some changes and upgrades. “After living in the house 20 years, you know your space, and what you need,” says Karen. At the top of her list, a modern cook’s kitchen, where she could enjoy every moment of slicing and dicing when baking and serving for the family and when entertaining. Granite countertops, all stainless steel top of the line appliances, a trio of ovens, professional grade stove, and an island including a second sink and raised eating bar has made where family and friends intrinsically gather warm and welcoming. Quite simply, Karen says, the space is fun: “It’s where everyone enjoys hanging out.” Included in the renovation was a sun room with floor to ceiling windows to frame the captivating view from every angle. It is the place Karen says she is able to relax, unwind and read, while subtle nauticalinspired décor is found throughout.

BE YOUR OWN BOSS! The formal dining room is an ode to both local and family tradition. An antique mahogany, walnut and rosewood hutch, a graduation gift given to Karen given decades ago, stoically anchors the dining room. It’s a place she concedes doesn’t see as much traffic as the other parts of the home but is used more than at just the holidays. She adores an ages-old butcher block that came from a meat market in Hope Valley, which she says adds an authentically Rhode Is-
land element. Toasting closer, local heritage is the home’s century-old church bench. “The bench came out of an old church in Wakefield, and was later placed in the basement of an old school in town, Hazard School. They used to show movies there in the early 1900s. I bought it in antique shop when they closed up an old building in town,” says Karen. Nearly three decades in this cedar shingle gem, the Folletts, it seems, are making their own family history.

Taste of Block Island happens all over the island, including Water Street, shown here
A Good Month for Foodies Summer brings a bounty of delicious events June, my personal favorite month, is also a food lover’s month with all kinds of culinary events on tap in southern Rhode Island, beginning off shore with the third annual Taste of Block Island on June 3-5. This three-day party promises “the best the island has to offer” with discounts on almost everything, plus cooking classes and free tastings. Visit www.tasteofblockisland.com for a complete list of this year’s festivities or call 800-383-2474. Across Narragansett Bay that same weekend, the 30th annual Great Chowder Cook-Off will be serving plenty of “chowda” to thousands of clam fans. This is the world’s original and longest running chowder competition, determining bragging rights for world champions in various chowder categories. Dozens of restaurants, both local and from afar, will serve their best on Saturday, June 4, from 11am to 6pm at the Newport Yachting Center, 4 Commercial Wharf in Newport. For details, visit www.newportwaterfrontevents.com or call 846-1600. Another Farm + Vine Dinner will be held on June 17 at Seasons, the restaurant at Ocean House, 1 Bluff Avenue, Watch Hill. This month the star of the show will be Chef Brian Kingsford from Bacaro in Providence. Ingredients from Stamp Farm will be used to make hors d’oeuvres and a three-course dinner, all paired with wines. The cost is $75 per person. For more info, call 584-7000 or visit www. oceanhouseri.com. By the way, Conde Nast Traveler magazine has selected the Ocean House for its prestigious 2011 Hot List. The annual list honors the best new hotel properties in the world.
SALSA TIME I tend to serve salsa more in the summer than any other time of the year, although it is an easy dish to come up with during football season. There is nothing like freshly made salsa, but time is not always on my side. So now I always have a couple of jars of the locally made Poblano Farm salsa on hand. Steve Siravo started Poblano Farm, a small tomato and pepper farm in South Kingstown, about five years ago. His aim was to grow and sell heirloom tomatoes to Rhode Island restaurants. When some of his tomatoes did not meet certain standards for use in restaurants, Steve turned them into the popular salsa that was served at his Mexican restaurant in Wakefield. Siravo eventually got out of the restaurant business to focus on his artisan salsa and sauce. Poblano Farm products can now be found in stores throughout Rhode Island and at local farmer’s markets. For more info, visit www.poblanofarm.com or check it out on Facebook. Siravo’s company has been featured on the Cooking Channel program Food Crafters in an episode that showed the making of salsa, from picking peppers at the farm to jarring them. A 16-ounce jar costs about $4.99. Flavors include roasted, chipotle and mild. RESTAURANT NEWS What used to be Hemenway’s at 28 Water Street in East Greenwich is now Nautika, a new Italian restaurant operated by the couple behind Tyler Point Grille in
Barrington. Mario and Cheryl Micheletti recently sold their Barrington business and have moved across the bay. Mario will serve as the head chef at Nautika Restaurant and Bar, which plans to offer “the fresh flavors of summer and sea with a splash of Italy.” Their plan is to be open seasonally, from May to September. What used to be Amalfi at the Village Inn in Narragansett is now Maharaja, an Indian-style restaurant, owned by Piyush Patel and operated by folks who run Indian restaurants in New York and New Jersey. Phil’s Restaurant in South Kingstown extended its hours to offer dinner, and that move was so successful, owner Ken Tetzner is planning to expand. He hopes to add a second floor dining room with 48 additional seats to accommodate the weekend crowds at the Main Street restaurant. La Strada Café and Pizzeria is now at the former site of Matunuck Pizza, 920 Matunuck Beach Road. They serve pizza, sandwiches and salads. At least three local restaurants have closed. Sadly, the Main Street Fish Market in Wakefield is another casualty of the poor economy after 16 years in business. After a 10-year run, the Wheelhouse Tavern in Galilee has also closed. We hear a new restaurant will take its place, to be called Clam Jammers. Ozzi’s Steakburger in Kingston also has closed.

Tell us a little bit about Silver Spoon Bakery. Silver Spoon Bakery was born out of a personal need: I was looking for baked goods that weren’t loaded with preservatives and a bakery that provided convenience, so that if I needed a cake for my friend’s birthday, I didn’t have to inconvenience myself by ordering during set hours, picking it up or transporting it. Our focus is entirely on our customers: what tastes good and what is convenient for them – everything from 24/7 ordering (online or by phone message) to completely custom treats either based on dietary need or personal taste. Your business is based on the idea that “indulging shouldn’t come with a slew of harmful and hard-to-pronounce ingredients, inconvenience or subpar baking standards.” How do you practice this? Because we keep overhead low by operating out of a commercial kitchen, we are able to use the richest chocolate, finest flours and freshest ingredients without transferring the cost to the consumer, which would be a challenge for any other bakery. A lot of ingredients have gone up in price, especially those that are organic or gluten-free. Many bakeries have had to react to this increase by adjusting their prices; fortunately, we don’t have to do that. You use a lot of local products. What are the benefits to that? Supporting the community is a huge reason as to why we use Rhode Island products. We have been so fortunate and really want to give back to the community and other business owners. Using local products allows us to source the best quality and freshest ingredients and we know exactly where they are coming from. Your bakery bakes “from scratch.” What does that mean to you – and for
your customers? Baking from scratch means we don’t use preservatives or additives and we can control the flavor, texture and look with a simple modification. This allows for complete customization. If a customer is allergic to a certain ingredient or wants to use a different type of flour, we can modify or create something especially for them.
Cupcakes have been a huge trend for the past few years, and now macarons are following suit. Where do you see these trends going? We don’t see the cupcake trend ending anytime soon – if anything, it will get bigger. French macarons – the tiny sandwich-like treat stuffed with a rich buttercream – is definitely taking the dessert world by storm. They are incredibly hard to perfect and require delicate handling, but taste divine. We also see tiny, bite-sized treats becoming very popular – rich, but dainty, something small just to satisfy that sweet tooth. What is your favorite item on the menu? The Wake-Up Call Cupcake: Ghirardelli chocolate cake and frosting gets caffeinated with a healthy dose of espresso and is topped with a chocolate covered espresso bean and flecks of Ghirardelli chocolate. Amazing any time of day. We would be lying if we said we never ate one for breakfast!
What is your menu like? What’s popular right now? Silver Spoon Bakery offers cupcakes, French macarons (not the same type of macaroons here in the US), intensely rich chocolate flourless cake (glutenfree), cake pops (like cupcakes on a stick and perfect for party or wedding favors) and we can make any cupcake flavor into a cake. The most popular items are the chocolate flourless cake and our Cookie Monster Cupcake: a vanilla bean cupcake with a cookie dough center, topped with a homemade chocolate chip cookie, vanilla bean frosting and another homemade chocolate chip cookie. If heaven came in a cupcake, this would be it.
You won “Best Gluten-Free Cupcake” and the “Rhode Island Historic Landmark” category at the Cupcake Throwdown contest at the Towers in Narragansett. What were the winning creations? The PB Cup won in the Best GlutenFree category. It is made with several gluten-free flours, rich cocoa and gobs of peanut butter frosting on top, as well as peanut butter crumbles. We also won the Best Rhode Island Historic Landmark category for our Big BLUEberry Bug cupcake. A blueberry cake is stuffed with sweet blueberry jam and then topped with a creamy frosting. We then added a sugar replica of the Big Blue Bug, Nibbles Woodaway, on the top. What is more Rhode Island than that? Silver Spoon Bakery can be found online at www.silverspoonbakery.com.

Catch of the Day The freshest new seafood in the area
Photograpy: Hilary Block
Cruising down Post Road recently, I spotted The Fish Market, where Blockbuster Video in Wickford Commons used to be. (Ah, spoken like a true Rhode Islander.) Of course, I was immediately interested, as I’m always looking for the best places to buy fresh fish. I had no idea this was more than a fish market: it is also a seafood restaurant. One cannot have too many seafood restaurants in the Ocean State. Don’t expect to see fake fishnets and plastic lobsters as part of the décor, or colorful buoys and rustic oars hanging from the ceiling. This is one sleek and modern restaurant, reminiscent of trendy spots in South Beach. There are two entrances. Behind door number one is the market; behind door number two, the restaurant. Both businesses share one large common space, with a stylish U-shaped bar in the middle. Candle-lit tables are set formally with white linens and fresh flowers. This is no seafood shack, that’s for sure – at least not in its interior design. The menu manages to have multiple personalities, offering all the golden seafood platters many of us crave, as well as a few more sophisticated items. My test with any seafood restaurant is its raw bar, and The Fish Market aced this exam. The chilled jumbo shrimp ($2.50 each) were quite large and cooked not
Red Velvet Cupcake
a minute too long, then chilled. With a quick dip into the zesty cocktail sauce, every bite of the firm shrimp had just the right crunch. The nicely chilled littlenecks ($1.50 each) and the oysters on the half shell (priced daily) were presented properly on ice, with plenty of briny liquid in their shells. I could have slurped down a dozen of each. The chowders are good ($2.95 for a cup, $4.95 for a bowl). The Rhode Island clear broth clam chowder is swimming with plenty of well-cooked red potatoes and chopped clams. The better choice would be the New England clam chowder, rich with butter and cream. The stuffies ($6.95 for two) and clam cakes ($4 for a half dozen) are excellent. The Portuguese-style stuffies are Greenwich Bay quahog shells that have been packed generously with a light, almost fluffy mixture of ground clams, breadcrumbs, chorizo (or perhaps linguica?) and seasonings. At first glance, the clam cakes looked dark and overcooked, but that wasn’t the case at all. From the first bite to the last, I could taste the ocean. These large fritters were studded with chopped quahog meat and had just the right doughy consistency. All this was the opening act for the stars of the show: the Fish and Chips ($8.95) and the Fried Seafood Platter ($25.95). The fresh cod (or haddock, de-
Calamari pending on what is available) is dipped in beer batter and then fried. The signature platter is much more than most people can eat at one sitting, with its large piece of fresh fish and calamari, whole belly clams, clam strips, sea scallops and jumbo shrimp, all dipped in a light batter for frying. With both entrees, the golden results are served over plenty of real French fries. (You can see bits of potato skin on each one.) If you’re not in the mood for seafood “in the rough,” The Fish Market can satisfy your more sophisticated yearnings. For starters, there’s a chicken pecan salad with fresh field greens, feta cheese and mandarin orange. Appetizers include coconut shrimp and lump crab cakes. There for lunch? Try the grilled vegetable sandwich served on a baguette. The six pasta dishes include lobster mac and cheese, lobster ravioli, shrimp scampi and seafood fra diavolo. Seafood entrees range from Atlantic salmon to fresh sushi-grade yellowfin tuna. While there, we bumped into old friends who raved about the Moules Frites, steamed mussels done up Portuguese style and served with a garlic baguette for dipping into the aromatic broth. There’s even a filet mignon on the menu, as well as the Surf and Turf: grilled filet mignon paired with your choice of baked stuffed shrimp, sea scallops or broiled lobster tail. The fancier the food, the higher the cost: that Surf and Turf at $34.95 is the most expensive item on the menu. Scoring so well as a seafood restaurant, we never expected The Fish Market to excel in the area of desserts ($7.95
each), but they far exceeded our expectations. We were told all the desserts are made at LaSalle Bakery in Providence (and I made a mental note to get myself over to that bakery soon). The Zuppa Inglese was a thing of beauty, a good six inches high and topped with huge chocolate ribbons. The sponge cake had been soaked in liqueur, surrounded by delicate ladyfingers, and filled with whipped cream. A large, perfectly ripe strawberry garnishing the slice was carved tableside with a flourish. The Red Velvet Cupcake was by far the best cupcake I’ve had. It was huge, surprisingly heavy, and a vibrant red– which really impressed me because my attempts to bake anything with a “red velvet” title have resulted in barely red, more like brown, results. The vanilla butter cream frosting was not as cloying as others I’ve had. The abundant chocolate curls were delicate and seemed to be of very high quality. And the big red flower of frosting that sat on top was truly the icing on the cake. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

June FROM PREVIOUS PAGE June 25-26 What happened to your love affair with airplanes? Remember when you used to actually dress up to fly in one, instead of rolling in wearing whatever you wore to bed the night before? When you believed that all pilots were more like “Miracle on the Hudson” Sully, instead of “Hanging Out at the local Irish Pub” Sully. Get some of the romance back at the Rhode Island National Guard Air Show, where you’ll be able to shake off the bad feelings of the pat downs and worries about seeing the sky mid-flight, in favor of awe inspiring maneuvers by a super skilled group of aerialists committed to their craft, like the US Navy Blue Angels, the Red Bull Aerobatic Helicopter and Sean Tucker, flying the Oracle Challenger bi-plane. 9am-4pm. Free, suggested donation for charity. Quonset State Airport, One Belver Avenue, North Kingstown. 2754110, www.riairshow.org. June 1-19 Compete in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, not to raise your GPA, but to learn the gentle life lessons taught by six quirky overachievers: that winning isn’t everything, losing doesn’t make you a loser and I comes before E except after C. $39, $47, $54. Inner Space June 25: No more pencils. No more books. Sure, it might be summer vacation in these parts – if you’ve finally made up those snow days – but this Saturday Science Festival invitation from the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, can’t wait until fall. These scientists are rock stars in their field – like Dr. Robert D. Ballard, the founder of the Inner Space Center, which uses technology to allow researchers around the world to participate in live undersea exploration. And today you can take a tour. Also open for investigation are touch tanks, the research aquarium, the nuclear science center and the rock and core facility, all to give a better understanding of environmental science. Before you go, chat with students and faculty about your Narragansett Bay, and get their take on oceans around the world. 10am-4pm. Free. over the end of The Sopranos series? Still pondering such tough decisions as whether to leave the gun and take the cannoli? Still hoping for a chance to enliven casual conversations with the line, “Say hello to my little friend”? Then it is high time for a trip to Providence to see The Family. The new musical about made men, inspired by Rhode Island’s own, contains all the drama and danger you crave — with none of the risk. Capiche? Development of The Family: A Musical about the Mob began in 2007, when two local celebrities joined forces. Former RI attorney general Arlene Violet and prolific composer Enrico Garzilli, a South County resident, discussed a show concept drawn from Violet’s experiences investigating the Mafia in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Collaborating weekly, Violet and Garzilli completed a working draft in ‘08 and started shopping it to producers. With investors interested in seeing the show “on its legs,” as Violet puts it, they decided to mount a full-scale production locally. The musical premieres this month in Providence — a fitting location, given the roots of Violet, Garzilli and the story itself. Violet’s groundbreaking career path led the former nun to success in law, government, talk radio, journalism, and even theater — she performed in two separate runs of Nunsense at PPAC. But the role of playwright is a new one for her. A musical theater fan since the age
of 12, Violet enjoyed exploring the genre. She explains, “As a writer, you write up to the point where you want the emotional expression to be in a song. That’s different from the books, for example, that I wrote… And it’s sure different from the political column I write every week, which is like a nothing but the facts, ma’am kind of a thing!” The Family takes place in 1970s Rhode Island and centers on Don Marco, the Godfather of a New England crime syndicate. Don Marco is grappling with some serious problems, including unwanted pressure to sell dope, betrayal by some of his men, and disobedience from his son, who is unwilling to take over the family business. When the Don struggles to maintain power, things could get bloody — and fast. Sound familiar? Locals who remember reputed mob boss Raymond L. S. Patriarca, Sr., may draw parallels to past events. Violet jokes, “The names have been changed to protect the guilty!” And she remains unafraid of hitting too close to home. Should anyone with whom she crossed paths as attorney general see the show, she notes, “I think they will think it’s an authentic portrayal. And I don’t worry about anything in terms of reprisals. I didn’t worry about it then; I don’t worry about it now.” Violet hopes that The Family will reveal a more complete picture of the mob, without all the usual stereotypes. Her experiences taught her that the “bad guys” were also capable of doing good things some-
times, and the “good guys,” bad. Unbeknownst to outsiders, those good deeds of mobsters often helped them to gain the control and even support of their communities. Violet also hopes audiences will relate to the universal struggles of families, as depicted in the show — how different expectations, warring ambitions, and poor decisions can wreak havoc. She adds, “People think sometimes their own family is dysfunctional. But they have to see this one to get a perspective on their own!” Peter Sampieri directs a largely local, top-notch cast, headed by Tom Gleadow as Don Marco. To evoke Federal Hill in Providence, the set showcases Broadway, Atwells Avenue and Dean Street. And a live orchestra of seven brings Garzilli’s lush musical score to life. Think you can find wise guys singing and dancing anywhere else in this state? Fuhgeddaboudit. Plan your visit to The Family today.

The Eye of the Beholder Photographer Scott Indermaur focuses on connecting with his subjects For Scott Indermaur,
inspiration is not only about creating work as an artist, but finding that inspiration in the people he photographs. The East Greenwich resident is a nationally-known photographer who started as a photojournalist, but gradually transitioned into corporate photography. “I started a career as a storyteller,” he says, “through pictures and newspapers, and I’ve come full circle now doing what I call narrative photography. Nowadays I’m telling a story through photography or multimedia.” Scott turned his desire to tell people’s stories through portraiture into Revealed, a photo series that’s all about describing peoples’ spiritual experiences. He gives each person a wooden box, then asks his subject to fill it with objects that describe his or her beliefs. “I’ve always wanted to do a project with a lot of meaning behind it – to peel back some layers, and see how much I can get to know my subjects,” he says. “I thought it would be a weekend project, but five years later, it’s really grown. I’ve done 160 people.” When WRNI, the Rhode Island affiliate of National Public Radio, heard about Scott’s work, the station approached him about collabo-
rating on their This I Believe series, in which people write essays about their beliefs. Now, Scott photographs all of those contributors for This I Believe Revealed. “I want this to give people permission to think about themselves in a way they’ve never thought about themselves. I’ve gotten a lot of random emails over the years by people who have been touched by the project who aren’t actual subjects,” he says. Now, the photographer and the station are debuting a 45-minute documentary, Revealed: Portraits from Beneath One’s Surface, that goes behind the scenes of the project. “The film adds another level of insight into the project,” Scott describes. “We just decided to focus on Rhode Islanders, and it’s gotten to be a pretty good size film.” After its debut on May 25 at the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport, the film will travel the country at film festivals. In September, a book of portraits and essays from This I Believe Revealed will be released. Though he and his family now call East Greenwich home, they spent 15 years in Kansas before relocating to Rhode Island. “We just wanted to experience a new life somewhere else,” he says. They spent six years
researching the country, and focused on the East Coast. “I grew up sailing, so I wanted to be near the ocean. Someone suggested Rhode Island, and after a few visits, we were like, let’s go.” They’ve now been here four years. “I love to sail, I love getting to eat fresh seafood,” Scott says. “There’s just so much to do. There are all these life experiences that I had never experienced before.” That desire to have new experiences, and to approach things in new ways, definitely translates to Scott’s work. “It’s about the importance of connecting with your subject – understanding who they are, and building off of that. It makes a huge difference,” he says. “I think connections are really important, and that’s what I’ve learned through this project. It could be as simple as doing some research, or just making conversation and connecting on that personal level, not just the photographic level.” Revealed: Portraits from Beneath One’s Surface will debut May 25 at the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport. Songs of the Sea June 9-12: There’s probably a whole lot that you’ve never considered before. Like the fact your sixth grade social studies teacher had a life beyond the classroom. Or how fishermen on long voyages occupied their time, during an era when laptops and DVDs weren’t exactly an option. The 32nd Annual Sea Music Festival highlights what they came up with, showcasing maritime acts from around the world – including Africa, France, Portugal and Poland – dedicated to carrying on the classic musical traditions on the high seas. And trust, they got pretty good at their craft – the risk of getting thrown overboard might do that. Running in conjunction with the concerts is the Music of the Sea Symposium, an intellectual exploration of the interaction between sea, music and song, drawing connections between literature, folklore and other smarty-pants stuff. Check website for schedule and admission. Mystic Seaport, 75 Greenmanville Avenue, Mystic, CT. 860572-0711, www.mysticseaport.org.

On a Roll What says summer better than a lobster roll? Tender, succulent chunks of lobster, just the right amount of dressing, a soft, buttery roll – it’s a Rhode Island institution. We rounded up a few of our favorites from around Southern RI.
Champlin’s Seafood Restaurant This light and buttery roll held generous chunks of tender lobster. The meat was nice and fresh, and the roll didn’t distract from the main ingredient. With Champlin’s dockside location, you know the lobster is fresh. 256 Great Island Road, Narragansett. 783-3152.
Chopmist Charlie’s Rhody Joe’s Rhody Joe’s offered a hearty, creamier lobster salad served on a soft, untoasted bun. The portion was a great size and the pieces of lobster were just right. 515 Kingstown Road, Wakefield. 783-0008

This filling lobster roll was served with lettuce and fresh slices of tomato. It was heavy on the dressing and full of flavor, and a little celery gave it the perfect crunch. 40 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-1020.
Harbourside Lobstermania Served on a delicious, grilled Italian roll, this sandwich had more fine pieces of lobster. The meat had a vibrant pink color and a stronger lobster flavor. 38 Water Street, East Greenwich. 884-6363.
