Take Your Summer to the Extreme There are countless reasons to love summer in Rhode Island – and after the winter we’ve just survived, we’re entitled to every second of it. But think about it: your summer months are mostly consumed by grilling in the backyard, laying on the beach and cooling off with cocktails on a deck, right? This year, kick your summer up a notch. From Our Readers All in a Name I may be missing something, but think the writer of the Quonset Point article [“Shipping Out,” May 2014]was wrong when she says that Blackhawk planes are stationed at QP. In fact they are C-130 Super Hercules transport planes, and I love watching them fly low over our house, which they do quite often. They are the plane of choice in moving large quantities of goods, vehicles, etc. for humanitarian responses in disaster situations. I have

had some of my more memorable adventures in their C-130 cousins in Angola, Rwanda and Indonesia. Lloyd Feinberg Editor’s Note: In our May cover story [“Shipping Out,” May 2014] our writer referred to Blackhawk as airplanes, when they are in fact helicopters (UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter), and they are based at Quonset Point. Thanks for pointing out that distinction.

BOOKWORMS REJOICE

A Coastal Oasis Explore hidden gardens Over 3,000 visitors from across New England and New York flock to Stonington, Connecticut every year to stroll amongst the placid gardens, which lay nestled in wooded pockets scattered across the colonial village. The Stonington Garden Club has hosted Gardens by the Sea since 2008 and this year there will be a particularly venerable variety between the ten private gardens featured on the walking tour. Each owner’s personal style echoes throughout the pergolas, pavilions and pansies. The tour meanders around a mix of “hidden” gardens, which feel very intimate inside their enclosures draped in espaliered shrubs, to stately yards that overlook Fishers Island Sound. One unusual garden displays

a variety of stepping stones and other ground coverings instead of grass. It’s used as a space for meditation and contemplation. Aside from the tour, there will also be a tented marketplace in the village square with over 20 vendors selling garden accessories and ornaments (perfect for cultivating that inspiration, which sprouted during the tour), as well as crafts, clothing and more. Whether you are seeking for a fresh look on your own garden, or just for some fresh air with a remarkable view, the Gardens by the Sea tour might be perfect for you. Foodie Events Leave a Good Taste in Your Mouth If the reopening of all of the seaside clam shacks in South County weren’t enough reason to celebrate, there are two delicious foodie events happening this month that are worth checking out. First up is Dine Out Downtown, a weeklong event designed by the delicious minds of the Westerly Pawcatuck DBA to showcase all of the culinary offerings in downtown Westerly. From June 22 through June 29, head to the center of town to experience Westerly’s diverse offerings. Participating restaurants include 84 Tavern on Canal, The Malted Barley, Trattoria Longo, The Twisted Vine, Mia’s Prime Time Café, Bridge, Perks and Corks, C.C. O’Brien’s and more. During the week, restaurants will be offering special (and specially priced) prix fixe menus or free food, like dessert with the purchase of an entrée. Check out Dine Out Downtown on Facebook for more information. After all, you can’t spend the entire summer in the sand. If you like a bit of travel with your dinner, check out the Taste of Block Island. During the weekend of May30-

Rhode Island Reading for the Beach If you are a lover of all things local who is in need of a good read, be sure to head over to Curiosity and Mischief at the Pier Marketplace in Narragansett. Throughout June the seaside boutique is hosting local authors for a series of book signings, starting with Padma Venkatraman, author of A Time to Dance, on June 7. On June 14, Adam Wesserman will be signing his book, Your Call is Important to US, and on June 15, Cris Pfeil will be there with his creation, Outside the Box. Normand Leclair will occupy the shop on June 21 with Culinary Expressions and Kim Arcand will be ready, pen in hand, to sign Your Ticket to the Universe: A Guide to Exploring the Cosmos. On June 28, both Steven R. Porter (Manisses) and Dawn M. Porter (Searching

CHANGE IS IN THE AIR

A Local Group Addresses Local Climate Change Effects Trattoria Longo at Dine Out Downtown

June 1, restaurants all over the island offer special, delicious deals to people wearing a Taste of Block Island pin. Ever wonder what would happen to your property and the surrounding landscape as climate change takes its toll? The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association has also asked this question, and in response it will host a series of climate change talks on Adapting the Watershed that is co-sponsored by the University of Rhode Island’s Coastal Institute. These proactive talks will feature speakers who specialize in a variety of environmental fields and will address the impacts of increased storms, flooding and biodiversity.

The first of three talks, Storms and Floods: Are they the new normal? will be held on June 26. The following talks are on July 10 (Water: Will there be enough… or too much?) and July 24 (Plants and Animals: How will they change throughout the watershed?) Admission to the talks is free and includes a one-year membership to the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association. All talks take place from 6:30-8:30pm at Chariho Middle School Auditorium, 455B Switch Road, Wood River Junction. 5399017, www.wpwa.org. –Grace Lentini June 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

ROCK Of AGES

The Rune Stone Finds a Permanent Home For decades, mystery seekers in South County trekked to the Rune Stone, a mysterious rock embedded in the sand at Pojac Point in North Kingstown. That is, they did, until the stone was stolen in 2012. While the details are as hazy on its recovery as they are on the origins of the stone itself – the DEM simply says that someone provided information to facilitate its return – the point is that the stone is back, and it’s got a new home in Goddard Park in East Greenwich. Nobody

knows why the Rune Stone, a seven-foot long rock engraved with markings that resemble ancient Runic symbols, was on the beach in the first place, or who made it, or what it means. Scholars from URI have estimated that the stone was engraved in the late 19th century, but that’s about all we know. The point is now, though, that it’s safe, and back on display for future generations to attempt to solve the mystery. Is Excalibur inside? Only time will tell. –Julie Tremaine

Evolving Coastlines A look at some of the issues and solutions facing Narragansett Bay By Grace Lentini

Give or take, there are roughly 400 miles of coastline in our Ocean State. That’s a lot to enjoy, and a lot to take care of. Whether you are watching the waves crash from your Green Hill cottage or you are coming down from the city for a beach day, what happens to the Bay impacts everyone. If you are one of those people who thinks that just because you don’t live right on the water, what you do in your everyday life doesn’t impact it, think again. From fertilizing your lawn to considering alternative offshore energy sources, everything we do is interwoven into the larger fabric of the health in and around Narragansett Bay. Read on to learn about some of the environmental issues facing the Bay, and what it means to you.

Water Quality

Photo: Courtesy of Save the Bay

Remember all those beach days you missed last year because they were closed due to elevated bacterial levels? Ever think, “There must be something that can be done to prevent this?” Tom Kutcher of Save the Bay has this (and other environmental issues) at the forefront of his mind. As the Narragansett Baykeeper, he is tasked with protecting the Bay and restoring water quality, habitat and ecological health to the system while working alongside government agencies. Think of stormwater as all that rain that “cleans” the street, picking up that windshield wiper fluid you spilled on the ground or that dog poop you decided not to pick up, that then makes its way through miles of pipes and spills into Narragansett Bay. Gross, huh? All of this ends up in the Bay because of the speed at which the rainwater hits the ground and rockets through these hard, impervious surfaces (i.e. parking lots, driveways, rooftops, streets and sidewalks). Slowing down this water so it can soak into the ground, or catching and treating it is key to reducing stormwater runoff. There have been numerous action steps taken to reduce this runoff from entering the Bay. This includes updating the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF), which is run by the Narragansett Bay Commission. “Stormwater is the second largest input of nutrients and bacteria after WWTFs. The Fields Point WWTF was the first facility to deal with urban sewers, which had previously directly entered the Bay untreated. These sewers combined sewage and runoff from street drains,” explains Tom. “[It] remains the largest and most influential WWTF on the Bay. Recent upgrades, including a massive storage tunnel and nutrient treatments, have greatly

Many pipes carrying polluted stormwater empty straight into Narragansett Bay

reduced both septic and runoff pollutants from entering the Bay.” That “massive strorage tunnel” is the product of Phase 1 of the Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO) Project by the Narragansett Bay Commission. The CSO addresses a majority of the stormwater runoff and sewage overflow by directing it into a 3.1-mile long by 26-foot wide tunnel that is approximately 300 feet below the city of Providence. Excess stormwater and sewage are held there until it can be properly treated at Fields Point WWTF. According to Jody King, who has been a shellfisherman for over 20 years, the Bay is getting much cleaner. “Now that Phase 1 of the CSO has been completed, there’s less effluent coming into the Bay. We don’t have the closures that we used to have in the Bay. Every time it rained a ½ inch, we would have huge closures. Now that we have those CSO’s in place, we don’t have those destructive rain events nearly as often,” says Jody. Save the Bay is continuing to approach stormwater runoff from multiple fronts now that the larger source is being addressed. “Runoff from your town or city directly pollutes the water in your neighborhood and at your closest bathing beach. It can be responsible for intermittent or permanent shellfish closures and beach closures, and it can make you sick,” Tom continues. So how can you, the average citizen, take action steps to reduce your impact on stormwater runoff? Save the Bay has created a guide that show you how to landscape your property to retain water (by creating a rain garden) and reduce fertilizer runoff (by creating a sustainable lawn and garden). Check it out at www.savebay. info/Backyards_fullbooklet.pdf. “We can all have positive impacts [on the Bay] by reducing impervious surfaces on our own properties, installing rain gardens, cleaning up after our pets, reducing or abstaining from chemical lawn fertilizer use and keeping our cars tuned up and leak-free, “says Tom. When we all do our part, our Bay will continue to be cleaner and healthier.

Erosion Now that you have some idea of what’s happening to the water in the Bay, let’s talk about the challenges our coastlines face, specifically, erosion. I spoke with Dave Prescott, the South County Coastkeeper for Save the Bay, who works directly on the water and serves as the eyes and ears of the coast. “Climate change impacts, such as higher sea levels and more frequent and intense storms, are a serious threat to our way of life here in RI. However, sea level rise is not causing shoreline erosion; it just allows those storms to have more of an impact further inland. Sea levels in RI have risen more than ten inches in less than a century, so the impacts that we are seeing now to coastal habitats (such as salt marshes and dunes) as well as infrastructure (roads, septic systems, etc.) are getting more severe,” Dave explains. “Save The Bay is interested in coastal erosion for a number of reasons. Coastal erosion is impacting public access along the shore (specifically lateral access along the shoreline), causing more water quality impairments due to the increase in the amount of infrastructure being impacted and negatively impacting our coastal habitats by not allowing them to migrate landward due to sea walls, revetments and structures.” The proposed sea wall in Matunuck near the Ocean Mist is an example of one of these structures. “The plan to build a 202-foot sheetpile wall along a section to the west of the Ocean Mist along Matunuck Beach Road is an expensive, short-term measure that may protect the road and utilities now but ultimately has the potential to put adjacent coastal areas and properties at risk. There are cases all over the world June 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

25

that show that hard-walled structures along the shoreline ultimately do not work and cause more damage to adjacent structures and beaches… While the 202-foot wall has been approved by the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), we argued at the time that the state (and local communities) cannot and should not look at shoreline erosion issues on a case-by-case basis and should instead come up with a more integrated and long-term way to address this ongoing problem.” From the point of view of the CRMC, Laura Dwyer, the Public Educator and Information Coordinator, weighs in. “The application from the Town of South Kingstown to construct a wall in Matunuck is now the subject of litigation, but it is not a ‘for or against’ issue for the CRMC, as the authority tasked with managing the coastline. There were many interests in this matter, and intricate issues for the CRMC to consider when we approved the work the Town proposed to protect the road and water line. In theory, the CRMC prohibits structures like this in conservation waters, but when the overall public good outweighs environmental harm, our regulations allow for making compromises, provided they meet the other regulatory requirements under a special exception. It was not an easy decision.” Kevin Finnegan, the owner of the Ocean Mist, also weighs in on the proposed sea wall. “From a business owner’s perspective, the 202-ft wall that the town of South Kingstown proposed would destroy the Ocean Mist and do little or nothing to protect the road according to engineers in open CRMC meetings,” he says. “I want to buy the existing approximately 600-foot wall to the west and improve it, just like Taylor Swift did. She took the existing sea wall and fixed it. If I owned that land, I could work with the town and the CRMC to get the right permits to repair and pay for the existing historic sea wall. It will save the Ocean Mist and the road. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. It’s better to fix a wall that’s already there than to put in a new one.” Homeowners living on the coast also face erosion issues as their beaches decrease year after year. And according to Dave, most proactive solutions are just band-aids for the bigger issue. “You can elevate your home to several feet above base flood elevation, you can move your home back on the property itself (further inland), you can adapt to the changing conditions by utilizing soft structures along the shoreline (such as coir – coconut fiber – logs) or establishing an ongoing beach nourishment project, or you can ultimately retreat from your property and move the structure to a location away from the coast. All of these decisions are costly and just buy you time. Beaches are dynamic systems with sand and water moving in and out and back and forth – they want to move. Ultimately a hard structure does not allow the beach to move as it would naturally and eventually you will see failures of walls and structures. And the forecast for sea level rise over the next several decades only complicates the issue more. In highly vulnerable communities, this will mean eventually looking at moving homes, businesses, infrastructure and people out of harm’s way by moving them inland.” As we go to press, the 202-foot sheetpile sea wall proposed by the CRMC has hit a snag, but still appears that construction will begin on it this fall. Back in March, the Providence County Superior Court’s Judge Steve P. Nugent overturned part of the proposal while another was upheld. The controversial proposal has been sent back to the CRMC reversing their ruling that the town had taken reasonable steps to mitigate

The eroded and damaged trail after Hurricane Sandy

environmental impacts. Judge Nugent did rule, however, in favor of the CRMC’s proposal that the town had “sufficiently demonstrated no reasonable alternative means, other than the proposed wall, to serve the compelling public purpose of maintaining the infrastructure of [Matunuck Beach] Road.” The saga continues, and the fate of Matunuck Beach Road still remains uncertain.

Offshore Energy Another issue at the forefront for coastal homeowners, especially on Block Island, is Deepwater Wind’s (DWW) proposed Block Island Wind Farm (BIWF). I spoke with DWW’s CEO, Jeff Grybowski to get the latest updates on the 5turbine 30-megawatt BIWF, which at this point, is now fully permitted at the state level, is awaiting federal approval and is on target to become the nation’s first offshore wind farm. “The Rhode Island state government has actively promoted the development of offshore wind. The CRMC conducted a multi-year planning process to identify the best locations in state waters for offshore energy. This plan – the Ocean Special Area Management Plan – designated a Renewable Energy Zone off the southeast coast of Block Island. This is where DWW will locate the BIWF,” he explains. “While a small handful of individuals have opposed the project, the BIWF has enjoyed tremendous, widespread support from a wide range of groups and individuals: Block Island and Rhode Island residents, the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce and the wider business community, labor leaders and every major state and national environmental group including Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, Oceana and the National Resources Defense Council,” Jeff says. Block Island resident Kim Gaffett weighs in on the proposed wind farm: “I can’t wait to see them just off our shore. I prefer them to container ships, oil tankers and Air Force jets, carriers and bombers. Once the DWW turbines go online, I will be proud to say that Block Island – the smallest town in the smallest state – will be leading the nation as a community powered by renewable energy.” Jeff continues, “When complete, the BIWF will produce enough clean energy to power approximately 17,000 homes for an estimated 20 years or more. It will reduce electric rates on Block Island by an estimated 40% and connect the island to the mainland electricity grid for the first time ever. The wind farm will supply nearly all of Block Island’s energy, but because the island’s power needs are relatively small, approximately 90% of the power generated by the wind farm will be exported to the mainland power grid.” “Offshore wind represents the East Coast’s best local, reliable and clean energy source for several important reasons,” Jeff explains. “First, the winds off of our coastline are among the strongest and steadiest for power generation in the nation. Second, offshore wind is the best energy choice for our environment. Wind power helps greatly to reduce the emission of harmful pollutants in our region. The Block Island Wind Farm will displace dirtier power sources, and reduce emissions of harmful pollutants like carbon dioxide. Third, by generating our own power locally, we will create jobs locally. Right now, 35,000 people are employed in the offshore wind business in northern Europe. Entire cities have been transformed into industrial hubs. We can do that here.” Narragansett Bay has been here long before Rhode Island was settled, and it will continue to be here long after we pass. In the words of Jody King, “Narragansett Bay is what makes Rhode Island. It deserves to be protected, preserved and promoted.” Well, I don’t think I could have said it better myself.

This season, get extreme all over the state By Bob Curley Nothing symbolizes the rise of “extreme sports” like the X Games, which over the past two decades has helped bring former fringe sports like competitive mountain biking, BMX, snowmobiling and freestyle skiing into the mainstream. Extreme sports is now a big-bucks business, with events held in high-profile locations like Aspen and L.A., but it all began on the streets of Newport and Providence (remember street luge on College Hill?), which hosted the inaugural Extreme Games in

1995 and the first X Games in 1996. So, Rhode Island is no stranger to adventurous outdoor activities, even if our mountains are more like hills and we don’t have the skateboarding street cred of, say, southern California. If you want to get outdoors and active in some unique ways – everything from light adventure to serious physical and mental challenges – the birthplace of extreme sports competition in the U.S. has a lot to offer.

AROUND THE AREA Kitesurfing

You can get two kicks for the price of one with kitesurfing, a blend of surfing and sailing that includes occasional exhilarating moments of air time. Christian Schlebach, owner of Newport’s Sky Kitesurfing School, says you can kitesurf pretty much anywhere with a steady, sideshore breeze, and some popGet a lesson in kitesurfing in Newport ular spots in Rhode Island includes Conimicut Point Park in Warwick, Barrington Beach, Colt State Park in Bristol, Matunuck State Beach and Second Beach and Fort Adams in Newport. Sky offers beginning and advanced lessons – basically, ground and on-water training – as well as equipment sales. “Kitesurfing is really easy to learn, but it’s 80% kite and 20% surf, so you need to learn to control the kite first,” says Schlebach. Beginner lessons are $230 for a three-hour ground course; on-water lessons are $350. Special “flight school” lessons will help you develop crowd-pleasing aerial moves. www.kitesurfingschool.com

Shark Cage Diving

There’s extreme sports, and then there’s willingly letting yourself be dropped into the ocean and surrounded by sharks, even if they are mostly blues and makos, not great whites. The shark-cage diving offered by Wakefield-based Snappa Charters is a genuine thrill, and after 40 years, Capt. Charlie Donilon and his crew have this “bucket list” experience down to a science. Bait Divers can choose between being submerged in a 5 x 6½ x 7½ foot cage or laying on “the Playpen,” a platform that allows you to observe the chum-hungry sharks from the relative safety of the surface. All-day shark-cage trips run in June, August and September with prices starting around $200 per person; go in June if you want to see the most sharks, sea turtles, porpoises and fish; September if you want warmer water and bigger sharks. www.snappacharters.com

Mountain Biking

The Arcadia Management Area in West Greenwich is the biggest swath of protected and undeveloped woodland in Rhode Island, and its 14,000 acres are ribboned with trails, making it one of the most popular mountain-biking destinations in southern New England. You can literally ride for hours in here, and the singletrack trails range from beginner to advanced. The nearby Big River Management Area has an abundance of easily navigated cross-country trails, with more challenges around the Carr’s Pond area, while Burlingame State Park in Charlestown has 17 miles of mountain-biking trails, including some hilly, rocky and bumpy intermediate and advanced routes. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can connect here with the North-South trail, a bikeable trail that runs the length of the state – 75 miles in all. The Rhode Island chapter of the New England Mountain Biking Association organizes group rides and has more information: www.rinemba.org

BMX Racing

BMX has been a part of the X Games since the event’s earliest days, and the history of the sport goes back to the 1970s, when young motocross fans in California began imitating their heros by racing their bikes and doing stunts on homemade dirt tracks. The Woodland BMX track in West Greenwich – a serpentine course with three banked turns and more than a dozen bumps and jumps – is open to riders of all ages racing 20- or 24-inch BMX bikes. Races are held every Saturday from mid-April to November, and the track is open for practice on Tuesday nights. Free clinics are also offered to riders who are new to the sport. The track is located behind the Dan’s Place restaurant, convenient for post-race snacks and bragging over beers (or Mountain Dew for the kids). www.woodlandbmx.com

Kayaking

The Kayak Centre in Wickford is ideally situated for on-thewater adventures for any skill level. Kayakers can put in at a calm cove across the street from the shop, where beginners can learn the basics in individual or group lessons before venturing out into Wickford Harbor – itself well-protected compared to the open waters The Kayak Center in Wickford is great of Narragansett Bay. Once for beginners and experts alike you’ve got the hang of launching, steering and paddling, you can join one of the Kayak Centre’s “gentle adventure” tours of the harbor and its islands, a sunset or moonlight paddle, a seal-watching outing or a river trip into the Great Swamp to see local wildlife and waterfowl. More advanced kayakers can take part in a guided tour of the Newport or Jamestown coastline or a 12mile, open-ocean crossing from Charlestown to Block Island (the return trip is by ferry). Tours start at $40; lessons begin at $55. www.kayakcentre.com

Parasailing – which basically entails being pulled behind a speedboat while wearing a parachute – is one of those thrilling activities that only seems to be available when you’re on vacation. Fortunately, Rhode Island is one of those places that people actually visit on vacation, so you Parasail out of Newport or Block Island can sign up for parasailing off the coast of Newport or Block Island pretty much all summer and into early fall. It’s reasonably affordable (prices start at about $60 per person) and well worth the money for the experience of rising from the deck of the boat to as high as 800 feet in the air, thrilling to the sensation of flight as your boat captain dips you down to water level and back up again by gunning and cutting the throttle. Block Island Parasail and Watersports (www.blockislandparasail.com) will get you aloft in a parasail solo or with a friend; Newport’s Island Style Parasail (www.islandstyleparasail.com) will go that one better if you have kids, who can go up three at a time.

Students learn the rules of the game and strategy in small groups (six to eight players) before scrimmaging in their first “chukker.” Summertime Discover Polo programs include weekend lesson packages, and an eight-week Coaching League with professional coaches leading twice-weekly practice games. A variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced education and game-play opportunities are available between the spring and fall arena season and the summer grass season. www.nptpolo.com

This modern kitchen is just one major improvement the Renauds made to this Victorian home

Made with Love

Photography: Grace Lentini

A Jamestown home gets a careful rehabilitation After a childhood growing up overseas, Megan Renaud fondly remembers her formative years spent in Jamestown. But it wasn’t until she grew up, married and settled in a Boston suburb with three daughters of her own that she realized just how special life on Conanicut Island was. “For me, I kept almost wanting to move back there, but my husband is from Boston area, and his family and work are there. I would get frustrated we couldn’t spend more time in Jamestown, and always thought… we would live there in retirement,” she says. So a few years ago, she and her husband Michael began looking for a summer home in Jamestown, where Megan’s mother still lives. Their realtor suggested the couple take a look at a turn of the century Victorian with ample bedrooms, space to entertain friends, easy proximity to downtown and a hefty

asking price well outside their budget. “I thought they were crazy,” Megan recalls, but she and Michael agreed to take a look. “It was such a great house and close to my mom. We could see having it for such a long time, and it had enough bedrooms so when the kids get older they could come back and visit with their families… It seemed like the perfect house.” Not long after they visited the Victorian, their realtor called and said the asking price had dropped, and when the owners had heard that Megan had roots in Jamestown, they graciously accepted the Renauds’ offer in August of 2011. The couple knew the home would need some updating, both cosmetic and regulatory, but they continued to visit with daughters Estelle, Margarite and Vivienne on holidays and long weekends. After a year, the family had a better

sense of their wants and needs for the home. Megan and Michael began looking for a builder. “We knew we wanted to work with someone who would respect old homes and try to maintain as much of the character as possible,” explains Megan. With a simple architectural plan in place, they met with a few builders but none seemed to appreciate the more than 100-year-old home, until their electrician suggested Greg Bressler of Picus Woodwrights based in Shannock. “Once we talked to Greg, we knew right away we knew we wanted to use him.” Because they were going to be off site for the majority of the project, Megan says Greg’s organization, talent, follow through and perhaps most importantly, his trustworthiness, would be key to the success of this new rehabilitation project. “When we took it on, it was in structurally fine shape.

Mechanically it was outdated and tired, insulation didn’t exist, the living space... didn’t really work in 2012,” says Greg. He explains that the home had three separate additions through the century, something he finds is commonplace with many older homes in Rhode Island. The first addition he describes as “simple” and “shed-like,” while the second addition he says enlarged the first and added a second floor space. “The big one was a third addition. I think they took an out building, like a large barn or storage building, and just dragged it to the back of the house. We tried to not disguise the sequence of additions because they’re kind of fun and funny. But we needed to open the spaces up so they worked.” As Michael and Megan knew their Jamestown home would be used as June 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

a hub for extended family and friend gatherings, a large kitchen was at the top of their priority list. In lieu of tearing down the awkward additions, Greg advised they repurpose them. “The existing galley kitchen was a small, narrow space. Attached to it were separate maids’ quarters. Somehow, I don’t know when, someone attached it to the house. It was just empty, so we knocked down the wall, or most of it, and turned it into the kitchen. So we used space that was already there. I wanted to maximize seating and maximize counter space for times like when we have Thanksgiving. We have space on the island and on the peninsula – we have a lot of seating so it works out well. We do a lot more entertaining than ever before,” Megan says laughing.

44 SO RHODE ISLAND | June 2014

The random second floor addition from decades ago was transformed into a master bathroom with custom double vanities hand crafted with teak wood by Greg. “That was a lot of fun,” he says. “It was a cool opportunity to do your thing. They have a large custom tiled shower and reclaimed hardwood floors, [which] is not done [in bathrooms] all that often these days. I worked in boat restoration and am confident with how we make wood work with water.” Greg also crafted a custom surface for the island in the kitchen, evaluating different woods for the perfect look and feel. His careful consideration proved to the Renauds his dedication to every part of the project. “It was clear he wasn’t just looking to get this job done

and move on to the next one. He spent a long time looking at wood he thought would look best, and he knew what existed in the home at that time, and what wouldn’t have been in a home at the time. He’s so knowledgeable about old homes; he’s passionate about it.” In the end, Greg chose a southern yellow pine for the island that he believes is somewhere between 200- and 300-yearsold. “We think it was from a whale oil rendering plant from the 1830s. That’s what we were told… it dates back before Plymouth Plantation,” he says. The history of antique lumber, Greg concedes, is speculative, but wood like yellow or hard pine was known for being used as structural lumber for the mills it was used in because of its strength and durability.

The galley kitchen cabinets were repurposed for a wet bar, and period pieces, like a pair of pocket doors found in Newport were stripped, refinished and mounted to exposed barn sliding track for a functional but aesthetically pleasing element. Though owners of an old home will agree that the work is never really done, the Renauds have recaptured the past as they look to the future. “When I go there, when I cross the bridge, I feel the drop of ten degrees and it’s just so beautiful,” says Megan. “It’s a special place.”

Shaking Out A Better Beach Body

Illustration: Maret Paetznick

A nutrition program that will have you bathing suit-ready by summer It had been a long winter. I know that everyone has been talking about how brutal this past one was, and everyone’s tired of talking about it, but this bears repeating. It had been a long, miserable, freezing cold winter, during which the only time I ever felt truly warm was standing over my stove, cooking comfort food. But, once the weather turned, like any true Rhode Islander, I started thinking about the beach. Once that happened, I took a hard look in the mirror, and I wasn’t happy with how I looked after a winter of hibernating in my kitchen. So, I called Melanie Lawhead of Be Fit Nutrition, a “social club” with a focus on health counseling that also serves delicious smoothies. Melanie has lost 75 pounds in just over two years, so I figured she knew what she was talking about, and could speak from experience when it came to the challenges of losing weight. She and her three partners – Stephanie Paiva, Rhonda Swain and Cynthia Paiva – started Be Fit earlier this year to help other people on their path to better health. I didn’t exactly know what my program was going to be, but I was willing to try anything if it was going to give me the head start I wanted on getting beach ready. We met at the shop, in the Pier Marketplace in Narragansett, on a Tuesday afternoon. I was immediately struck by the entire wall of smoothie flavors, ranging from Almond Joy to Berry Lemon Cheesecake, from Mudslide to White Chocolate Salted Caramel. Melanie started by asking me about my eating and exercise habits (I bet you can guess which one was too much and which was not enough). Then she explained to me how she’d be guiding me to better health. All of the smoothies listed on the wall were actually meal replacement shakes, that have less than 300 calories, tons of vitamins and minerals, a quarter of your daily protein and barely any sugar. As we chatted, I sipped a Caramel Macchiato shake and a metabolism-boosting green and black iced tea blend.

Nickle Creek Melanie explained that those would be my breakfast and lunch every day for the next month, supplemented with protein-rich snacks, “colorful dinners,” as she called them, with some herbs and vitamins thrown in the mix to promote healthy digestion and absorption. If it sounds complicated, it’s not. Completely the opposite. In the morning I have a tea in place of my normal iced coffee, take two caplets and drink a shake. It takes far less time than scrounging for my normal, completely unhealthy breakfast. (The morning I met Melanie, I actually ate five Ritz Crackers and a piece of cheese for breakfast. Clearly I needed help.) The same at lunch: I don’t have to think about what I’m eating. The shakes are delicious: I alternate between chocolate and vanilla, often adding instant espresso powder to either for a caffeine boost. While other meal replacement shakes have left me starving, these are so protein rich that I actually struggle with remembering to eat my snacks before it’s time for another shake. And I don’t crave junk, because I’m getting such a complete dose of vitamins every day that my body isn’t deficient in anything. Dinners are easy, too: lean proteins, lots of veggies, complex carbs. What

I really like about the program is that there’s no calorie counting, no points – you eat whatever you want, as long as you’re mindful to limit bad stuff and hit your protein number every day. For me, that usually means having a chocolate peanut butter protein bar for dessert. Trust me, I’m not complaining. It’s three weeks into the program as I write this, and I’ve lost over ten pounds. This is only a month-long experiment, but I have every intention of sticking with the program. I couldn’t be happier with the results so far. I look better and feel more energized. I also love how much simpler my morning routine is now. Seeing the progress that I’ve made has gotten me to join a gym, and more than that, has encouraged me to use that membership, not just spend money on it. By the time you read this, I’ll already have been to the beach. Catch me on Labor Day weekend: I’ll look like a different person.

Putting the Hip in Happy A Wakefield shop that’s all about positive vibes I openly admit that I find the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams refreshing and uplifting because it’s a wonderful reminder that there is plenty to celebrate and feel good about in this hectic, over-scheduled world we live in. And when I recently shopped at Abby’s Attic I knew instantly that I had found a special store that was the equivalent to that song, because when I walked into this sun-drenched boutique it made me want to get up and dance. Owner Abigail Jefferson, a wellknown professional storyteller who mesmerizes audiences of all ages with her stories about cultural traditions, opened Abby’s Attic in July. This cozy community boutique is nestled in the heart of downtown Wakefield and is home to a fun and funky collection of new, used and vintage clothing, handcrafted jewelry and very cool artifacts. I was greeted warmly by Jefferson and her infectious smile and was completely drawn to the hip and vibrant Bohemian-style pieces she was wearing. The colors were alive yet exuded peace, and I found the hipster flair was cool and flattering and worked for all age groups. Her ensemble grabbed my attention so Abigail invited me to check out some similar styles that were pleasantly displayed throughout the spacious store. I love the energized yet subtle music that played softly in the background as it offered a bit of a Calypso feel as I browsed the one-of-a-kind selections of geo-mod baby doll dresses, flowing and feminine lacey blouses, chic crop tops, classic blazers and slacks, brilliant gauze skirts, modish, flattering widelegged pants and denim pieces that I could simply live in 24/7. Abby’s Attic is tucked quietly away in charming Wakefield, but would likely be found in a city setting like Boston or Providence or definitely in happening SoHo, NY. As I checked out the stunning embroidered leather boots I noticed the eclectic mix of shoppers that were enjoying their time here today. Young girls were finding unique prom dresses that won’t break the bank and professionals were leaving with statement pieces, both vintage and trendy, to update their wardrobes.

Owner Abigail Jefferson brings new energy to fashion

“Teens and 20-somethings love some of our retro, hippy styles because the flavor of the past is very appealing,” shares Abigail. I notice a diverse collection of leather handbags, shawls, wraps and amazing Mexican-style ponchos. There are India-inspired blouses and gowns and plenty of adorable dresses, shorts and stylish accessories that will pull any summer wardrobe together. But the denim pieces stopped me right in my tracks. I am definitely drawn to the cool assortment of jeans and cut offs that were made for busy mid-life mamas like myself. I know I can pull this groovy look off and feel great about it thanks to the wide variety of styles and sizes. The corner location has easy access and is beautifully displayed with photographs and other cool, cultural artifacts that are for sale and will bring some ethnic flavor to your home décor. The handcrafted jewelry is like wearable art and will complement the new finds you’re sure to be leaving with when you shop here. And did I mention how reasonable the prices are? Because the merchandise is a collection of consignment, vintage and old and new, you can easily

outfit yourself with a completely updated wardrobe for less. Abigail is a big believer in women taking the time to adorn themselves with clothing that makes them feel special and beautiful and notes that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to do so. “This shop has a large representation of different ethnicities because we can embrace so many cultures by way of clothing and dressing. Abby’s Attic is a place where women can definitely express themselves artistically without going overboard in style or price,” she shares with warmth and enthusiasm. So for all you busy women out there that need a little summer wardrobe pick-me-up, gather up your girlfriends, daughters and other special female friends and head over. Abby’s Attic will help you dress pretty this season and help you find your happy place all at the same time.

Tinkering With Gifts A Richmond shop keeps everyone in mind Alyssia Machado’s hobby of collecting and crafting sea glass jewelry has blossomed into a unique gift shop in Richmond, and for the past six months, Tula Tinkers has been supplying one-of-a-kind gifts for that special someone. With a wide range of items like personalized coffee mugs to modern furniture and house décor, the gifting possibilities are endless. What was your motivation to open a gift shop? I started collecting sea glass many years ago; I eventually had a collection that was so big, I had to find something to do with it. That’s when I discovered the artist in me. I started by wire wrapping the found glass and then eventually started to drill the glass to create one of a kind sea glass beads. Then, I started making all different types of jewelry, using a variety of different found items like sea glass and moss I collected. From there I started selling some of my things online on Etsy and also consigning my items at a few different shops. I then fell in love with the idea of having my own store.

Photography: Ron Cowie

Wedding season is here. What’s the perfect gift for newlyweds? We have hand painted signs that say “just married” in Newport and other RI towns. The artist is also willing to work with the couple to create custom oneof-a-kind signs with names and weddings dates. We also have Mr. and Mrs. hand painted coffee mugs and wine glass sets. The wood cutting boards and coaster sets are also a great gift for any newlywed. Who doesn’t want a nice cutting board while preparing a good home cooked meal? What advice would you give to someone who is shopping for that “hard-to-shop-for” person? There are really so many different types of items at the store. You could really find a gift for anyone. We have local photography, handmade jewelry, home goods, toys and clothing for kids. We have over 120 different local artists so you are bound to find

something that is just right. When you come across that perfect item for that special person, you’ll just know. If it feels right, go with it! What makes a good hostess gift? Something nice to give your hostess would be something they could use for a future event or party. Maybe a nice wine glass set or a coaster set. We also have some neat melted wine bottle cheese boards and unique wine stoppers. Something simple that will remind them of you every time they use it. What are some inexpensive gift ideas that are special but you don’t have to spend a fortune? I think the most special gifts are the ones you can customize. The wood signs we carry can all be customized and range from $18-$30. The hand stamped spoons and coffee mugs are very affordable at $8-$10 a piece. Does your proximity to the beach influence what type of gifts you have? It does. We have many items that have a “beachy” feel to them. We carry some beautifully made nautical handbags and clutches. We also have jewelry that has been completely constructed of tiny sea shells. A lot of our artists work with materials that they have collected off the Rhode Island coasts. They use these materials to

make our driftwood wreaths and seashell wind chimes. What is the best way to really personalize a gift? Many of our artists are willing to work with us and our customers to create items to best fit the buyers’ wants and needs. We can add names and dates to some of the painted signs and wine glasses, mugs and spoons. I’ve even painted completely custom coffee mugs with personal quotes, nick names or wedding song lyrics. Who else can I get a gift for from Tula Tinkers? We try to keep something for everyone at the store. We have an entire room dedicated to kids filled with wishing wands and ribbon sticks, crocheted stuffed animals and dresses for little girls. We have great gifts for grandparents too like loose tea, local honey, and many great crocheted items. We even have walking sticks that have been hand carved and decorated with stones collected from RI.

At Dutchman Dental, our philosophy is simple: what is best for the patient is what’s best for our business. We strive to provide our community with the highest quality of care, in a laid back, comfortable environment. It was with this in mind that we opened a Tiverton office over 10 years ago and a second location in Wakefield this spring. It is located at the South County Commons on Route 1, and looks and feels South County. The office is furnished with a beachy vibe, highlighting the various coastal areas of America. From New England to Alaska, each room has a different feel. “I don’t want to spend my career in the same room, so we like to mix it up,” says Dr. J.P. “The fish tank desk was my vision two steps through the door, and will be yours also!” The open and welcoming atmosphere is a reflection of our approach to treating people. We offer a full range of dental treatment from cleanings to 3-D guided implant surgery. “Yet above all the technology and training is our patient

first philosophy. We will tell you what you need; you tell us what you want.” We are not dental salesmen, we just want your teeth to last as long as you do - that’s the goal. We can do anything, but that doesn’t mean you need everything. “As a team leader I’m blessed to have a great team with tremendous talent,” says Dr. J.P. The South County office is currently staffed by Drs. Nick and Megan Catallozzi. Nick is a Rhode Island native and Megan is a bundle of Iowa energy. They are building a family and a future in South County and want you to be part of it. Let our family take care of yours at Dutchman Dental. For information on our growing team and details on the dental services provided in our offices visit dutchmandental.com. To schedule an appointment please call as at 401-284-3308 for Wakefield and 401-624-9177 for Tiverton. Look for our team to expand as our family grows. We sincerely hope you can be part of a great future, and we can be part of yours.

the counter, but it never felt rushed or unhelpful at all during our visit. On the contrary, the staff came over to our table several times to check on things and deliver the multitude of pizzas we ordered. As with my Cobblestones review two months ago, a quick reminder that

when I’m talking pizza here I’m talking about Neapolitan-style cooked in an oven with a wood fire at around 8001,000 degrees with some great char on the edges and bottom. If you like that style of pizza as much as I do then Bravo Wood Fired Pizza is another spot you have to get to. Like I said before,

it’s an embarrassment of riches for pizza lovers in South County. Honestly, I loved all five pizzas we tried, even the big combo of pesto, calamata olives, onions and feta cheese that we threw together. In addition to that we had The Classic, The Sisters, The Parma and a straight up cheese and pepperoni pizza for my daughters. All were priced around $13-$14 for a 12” pie, and the toppings were very good. The restaurant tries to use as many local products as possible with meats from Daniele, cheeses from Narragansett Creamery and sodas from Empire Bottling Works. But let’s start with the dough though, because you can’t have a pizza without the dough. Bravo’s dough had some nice chewiness to it and didn’t become too crunchy or brittle from the intense heat. It felt to me like it had a very tiny hint of sweetness, which may be more due to the toasting it receives from the wood heat than anything in the dough. The dough also maintained its structure well even when cut and lifted. Pizza dough doesn’t need to be rocket science, but it needs to be smartly done, which this was. If you’ve had Narragansett Creamery’s

pizza review. What’s that you say? I just reviewed a pizza place two months ago? Well then it must be an embarrassment of riches for pizza lovers because I just ate five pizzas (with a little help from my family) at Bravo Wood Fired Pizza in North Kingstown, and South County has definitely got itself another winner on its hands. Technically Bravo Wood Fired Pizza has been around for several years – since 2009. At least its dough and main pizzaiola, Gregg O’Neill, has been around for a while. You may have seen the Bravo pizza oven trailer out at farmers’ markets and other area events where O’Neill has been cranking out some good pizza pies. Last year Bravo took over a vacant former coffee shop (they’re even using the drive thru window!) on Post Road in North Kingstown and built a permanent location for wood fired pizza, plus a few other dishes. Open for lunch and dinner six days a week, it’s even better than the trailer has been for the last five years, and that’s saying something. While the exterior has that drive thru and a coffee chain look, the interior has been nicely redesigned with the oven being the central focal point of the place, as it should be. It’s a fast, casual restaurant where you order at

mozzarella or Daniele’s prosciutto then you know how good the toppings they use at Bravo are on their pizzas. If you haven’t those food items, then you really need to get out and buy some of the excellent products made right here in Rhode Island that are exported to many other parts of the country. The sweet Italian sausage on The Classic is made locally and it shone through without being greasy or heavy. The Salty Sea Feta that Narragansett Creamery makes went beautifully on the Greek-style pizza. One of the principles behind making great pizza is to use great ingredients. It’s fascinating to see, as more local ingredients become recognized for their excellence, that pizza like Bravo’s can

be made so perfectly. Bravo Wood Fire Pizza also offers pastas and salads, as well as locally made gelato, all of which we all want to definitely head back and try another time, though I’ll probably stick to more of that excellent pizza. In the past few years we’ve gone from no great wood fired pizza places in Rhode Island to several, and Bravo Wood Fired Pizza is right near the top of that pack.

The Savory Grape in

East Greenwich has made a name for itself in the Rhode Island wine community. With its fine reputation of great wine tastings and classes, a knowledgeable staff and a wide range of wines, The Savory Grape has helped Rhode Islanders expand their knowledge of wine. Now, it is hoping to reach out to another population – the craft beer loving folks of Rhode Island. The shop has recently launched a Craft Beer Club. The Craft Beer Club was the idea of store employee, Samantha DiSegna. She says the club was created to give “beer aficionados limited and unique craft beer selections as a way to get them to explore and encourage them to try new beers, moving them out of their comfort zone.” Each month, Samantha chooses unique (many are limited production beers) and interesting beers to tantalize her club members. The chosen beers are chosen specifically to be unique to The Savory Grape (most are not found anywhere else in Rhode Island). Beers come from around the country and from around the globe. They include a variety of styles (from light and crisp to malty and heavy). A recent month’s sampler included a Mikkeller/Prairie IPA from Oklahoma, a Konrad 14 Lager from the Czech Republic and a De Proef Brouwerij Brewery 100% organic Triple Blond from Belgium. The beers come with tasting and brewery notes, food pairings and even a recipe to pair with one of the beers. The Beer Club offers levels of beer fun. Level 1 is for “The Beer Nut” and includes three beers a month for $25.99 plus tax. Level 2 is for “The Beer Whiz” and includes six beers a month for $55.99 plus tax. Delivery is free within the 02818 and 02886 zip codes. Beers can also be shipped to anywhere in Rhode Island (with fees starting at $5.95) or can be picked up at the store. The beers arrive each month between the 10th and the 15th of each month. To enroll in the Craft Beer Club, visit or call the store, or email sam@thesavorygrape.com. 1000 Division Street #120, East Greenwich, 8869463, www.thesavorygrape.com Summer is Heating Up at Crazy Burger With summer arriving this month, on

your way to or from the beach, stop into Crazy Burger and check out their summertime menu. My favorite Crazy Burger creation, the Fireworks Burger, will be making a comeback. This super flavorful burger will heat up your summer with a fennel rubbed ground beef patty, melted gouda, caramelized onions and peppers, bacon and chili garlic mayo all on a bolo. There’s also a new vegan, gluten-free Quinoa Burger (a combo of quinoa, black beans and sweet potato), crusted in corn chips and topped with a cilantro-pine nut pesto. If burgers aren’t your things, try the new Magic Green Soup with pureed kale, spinach, avocado, sweet potato, pear, bean and cilantro. A new entrée on the menu will be Champagne Chicken. The chicken is stuffed with mascarpone cheese, served over portabella risotto and grilled asparagus and finished with a champagne buerre blanc. Owner Michael Maxon promises there will be a few other surprises on the menu including new juice concoctions and a new dessert. 144 Boon Street, Narragansett, 7831810, www.crazyburger.com Cool Off This Summer with Cool Bob’s Organic Ice Cream Customers who can’t get enough of Raw Bob’s organic juices in East Greenwich will have a new reason to rejoice with the opening of Cool Bob’s, an organic ice cream shop. The shop will be located on Main Street right next to Raw Bob’s in the spot previously

occupied by Searles Old Tyme Ice Cream. Continuing the philosophy of Raw Bob’s, Cool Bob’s will be creating ice cream and frozen concoctions that are 100% organic and dairy free. Instead of using traditional dairy products, the shop will rely heavily on coconut milk. Both Raw Bob’s and Cool Bob’s are owned by Patti Burton and her boyfriend, Daniel Rubino (who coowns the Mews Tavern in Wakefield). The “Bob” in the stores’ names refers to Burton’s father who passed away about a year ago. 253 Main Street, East Greenwich, 884-1491, www.facebook.com/CoolBobsicecream Local Winery Hosts Spring Festival Just over the border, in North Stonington, Connecticut, the Jonathan Edwards Winery will be hosting its annual Spring Festival June 7-8. Sail away with Jamestown native Rob Anthony as he whips up a legendary Bloody Mary. His quick wit and funny signs will have you looking forward to the boat ride home. How did you end up bartending onboard the Block Island Ferry? It’s not as awesome of a story as I would have liked. Two years ago, I was waiting tables in Newport. I saw the ad on Craigslist, applied and here I am – bartending year-round on one of their five boats. There’s more than one ferry? Yes, two of them are high-speed boats, each one with an indoor bar. The other three are the traditional big boats so to speak, these are equipped with two bars each. Out of all the boats, only one of the “traditional” boats has an outdoor top deck; this is the year-round boat. Any difference between bartending on land versus on sea? I don’t see a lot of familiar faces and we have very little repeat clientele. In the wintertime, it’s mostly the locals traveling on board. During the summer, it’s high volume. Tell me about the legendary Block Island Ferry Bloody Mary. The owners pride themselves on their own secret recipe mix. It’s nothing extremely complicated nor does it have any surprising ingredients. Everything is perfectly balanced. It’s so delicious that I’ll just drink the mix virgin with my sandwich. If you catch us in a rush, you can sometimes catch us making the mix in front of you on the fly. It’s always garnished with olives, lemon, lime and celery. We also make a Spicy Beefy Bloody Mary – made with Absolut Peppar with a stick of beef jerky on top of everything I just mentioned. Besides a Bloody Mary, what’s a cocktail a passenger must order when onboard? The most tropical drink – a Dark n’ Stormy. What else are you pouring? We have a pretty good beer list, a few different types of wines and 30 different types of liquors. We have a very robust drink list with almost 40 cocktails. I’d be lying if I said I had every one

Rob Anthony shakes up the perfect ferry cocktail

memorized. It’s the same list yearly with a featured bartender’s choice special. What’s your special? I’m a big fan of Swedish Fish. I’ll make it with Citrus vodka, cranberry, grenadine, triple sec, lime garnish and float some Swedish Fish on it. I’ll post a fun sign with a drawing stating, “May or may not contain real fish from Sweden.” I’ve developed the reputation for having the most fun signs. I take the sign to the next level, although my penmanship is reminiscent of a 3rd grader with a crayon. What’s a seaworthy cocktail for captains to make onboard their own boats this summer? Aloha Screwdriver - made with vodka, coconut rum, and equal parts of orange and pineapple juices. What’s your signature cocktail? I call it the “Bill Cosby” because it tastes just like Jello. It’s made with vodka, cranstrawberry juice and a secret liqueur. What’s proper ferry bar etiquette? Bring cash and don’t expect to be served until we are in transit. The ferry is not equipped with ATMs, wifi or credit card machines. We’re not allowed to sell alcohol while the boat is docked; only when at sea. Don’t cut the line

and rest yourself on the counter next to me thinking I’ll skip everyone. I will look at the last person in line and serve ten more customers before I get to you. What’s your favorite thing about the island? They’ve done an absolute outstanding job of keeping out corporations and that ritzy lifestyle you find in other island destinations. Block Island still has a very historic and family-style feel. Even the ferry is a family-owned company. The owners and employed family are always here. There’s no corporate office that they hide behind. If you need them for anything, they are always present and accommodating. What are you doing when you’re on land? I play bass in a reggae funk band called James and The Giants; we play covers and write original music. I also volunteer for the Tillinghast Pond Management Area when I can; I help maintain the trails and areas.

RHODY BITES A Sponsored Statewide Dining Guide

Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House Iggy’s is a family business, owned and operated by the Gravino family for over 25 years. Obviously, you have to start with a steaming bowl of chowder accompanied by their golden brown clamcakes. The clamcakes taste just how you remember them from those childhood rides home from the beach: that crispy outside and tender chewy inside, generously studded with tender chunks of clam. The menu at Iggy’s goes way beyond

clamcakes and chowder – they’ve got burgers and sandwiches, and the seafood selections include all your favorites: fried whole belly clams or strips, fish and chips, baked scrod, stuffies and heaping lobster rolls. There are also great pub-style apps and sides to round out your feast, including cheese fries, nachos, buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks. Of course, no meal at Iggy’s is complete without a doughboy to finish it off – it is in the name, after all!

SO RHODE ISLAND | June 2014

Simply Beautiful Lisa Barsumian creates elegance without complication An amateur painter might assume that as skills improve and the eye sharpens, one’s work will become more detailed and complex. For Lisa Barsumian, however, a long career as a professional artist has been a pathway to simplicity, with clutter stripped away and emphasis given to lines, patterns and the way that light hits the subjects of her paintings and monotype prints. “Some of my sketches are more detailed than my drawings,” she says, explaining the process as “less is more – it’s editing down to what might be the most important aspect of what you’re looking at.” Lisa isn’t especially picky about her subjects, with works featuring landscapes, flowers, dogs, chickens and even everyday objects like bicycles and chairs. “I’ve always painted everything and anything,” she says, describing her subjects as more “good excuses” to put pen or brush to paper than compelling in and of themselves. Lisa’s monotype prints are black and white and highly contrasted, with great attention paid to shading. Her paintings tend to be muted as well, but with care given to the use of color tones. The combination of technique and static subject matter lends a sense of calm to her work, somewhat reflective of changes in her personal life, as well. Growing up in Connecticut as the child of two respected artists, Lisa

never questioned the idea that someone could make a profession out of painting and printing. After graduating from the Art Institute of Boston and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, she spent the early part of her career working the regional art-show circuit, exhibiting and selling her work (mostly painting at the time) and gathering invaluable feedback from customers at events like the annual Wickford Art Festival. Later, her paintings began gracing the walls of venues like the Cooley Gallery in Old Lyme, where she met one especially important customer – her future husband, Tom Farrell. Lisa traveled widely, spending time in Paris, India, Greece, western Canada, Denver and Virginia while summering in Jamestown, her family’s homeaway-from-home. “I took my work and showed it everywhere,” she says, painting and drawing all the while. “The light is different in every place, but it always looked like my work,” recalls Lisa. In India, for example, she used greytones to “make sense” of the bright madras colors she saw. An initial love of printmaking gave way to the “immediacy of painting,” and for three decades that was her primary medium as she pursued a career as a painter in Paris and raised two sons, James, 21, and Aiden, 19. Over time, her painting trended toward greater simplicity, sometimes absent of color completely. Shortly

after her mother passed away in 2009, Lisa bought a 40-year-old Dutch printing press and decided to rekindle her romance with printmaking; today, she splits her time between printing and painting – the press sits on one end of her studio, her easel on the other. That studio will soon be transported from Paris to Jamestown, where she and Tom were married at the third of the “three sisters” homes and the couple now own an 1892 Victorian waterfront home of their own. The move from the urban bustle of Paris to the laid-back pace of Jamestown has been a long time coming, she says, though it’s far from retirement. Barsumian has been busy working and is mounting an exhibit in June and July at the Jamestown Arts Center, where she also spends time working on the printing press there. “There’s a real sense of community here, and gorgeous scenery everywhere you look,” says Lisa of Jamestown. “The gallery is beautiful, and I have an incredible urge to fill its walls.”

We All Scream for Ice Cream Summer is here, finally. Aside from ice cream being delicious, it’s sort of your obligation to eat as much of it as humanly possible during these warmer months. We tried some oldies but goodies and also tasted the gourmet side of ice cream.

Brickley’s Ice Cream & Cakes

St. Clair Annex “It tastes like pie!” And you know what? Their Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp actually did. You could taste the fresh strawberries folded into the ice cream and the crumble added that nice sweetness and crunch you would expect on top of pie. You can tell it’s homemade, and that’s a good thing. 141 Bay Street, Watch Hill. 3488407.

“This is exactly how I like my ice cream,” exclaimed one of our staff members. The Butter Brickley was incredibly creamy and smooth with ribbons of butterscotch throughout and tiny pieces of toffee. We think it would also be great as a milkshake, if you can stop yourself from eating it first. Locations in Narragansett and Wakefield. www.brickleys.com.

Newport Creamery The Cookies and Cream ice cream reminded us of childhood in every way. It had a great creamy texture, plenty of big pieces of Oreos and a nice vanilla flavor. The only thing missing was getting the ice cream all over our faces, but we suppose we could still do that, if we wanted to. Locations in Coventry, North Kingstown and Newport. www. newportcreamery.com.

The Inside Scoop This Coffee Oreo ice cream should be the official dessert of Rhode Island. The strong coffee flavor reminded us of the coffee syrup in coffee milk and the big chunks of Oreos still retained their texture and yummy flavor. 30 Ten Rod Road, North Kingstown. 294-0091, www.insidescoopri.com.
