KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER Our Salon Culture: A 34 Year History

we moved to Hope Street and in 1985 opened our second location in East Greenwich. We expanded in East Greenwich in 1996 and then again in 2010 and became the Best of Rhode Island salon and spa that you still enjoy today 34 years later.

1980s

But through all the changing styles and fashions, the ups and downs of the economy, six American presidents, the invention of the internet, etc. one thing has remained consistent: our focus on you. Our salon culture is still based on the core principles of teamwork, ongoing education, customer service and outstanding services at reasonable prices.

1977-2011

I’m Kenneth Cote. I’m a professional stylist, salon owner for 34 years and a father. In 1977, I was a busy stylist trained in the relatively new Vidal Sassoon technique of precision hair cutting. The Dorothy Hamill wedge and Farrah Fawcett flip were the rage. When I looked around most salons at that time were still operating as 1950s beauty shops.. not very up-to-date with the latest trends.. not very professional. I decided I wanted to create a different type of salon culture for myself and for other stylists. I wanted to create a new salon experience for Rhode Island clients. So I decided to open my first salon on North Main Street in Providence above a poodle grooming parlor called Puppy Luv! It was a labor of love. I had a mission. I wanted to enhance the professionalism of the salon industry in Rhode Island and provide fellow salon professionals a work environment that focused 1970s on camaraderie, teamwork and ongoing education. And guess what.. it worked! I became a guest artist for Redken Labs and had the honor of traveling the world teaching American hairstyling techniques. We did fashion shows and models and politicians and television personalities.. we even styled the hair of the first female President of Ireland! As our reputation for providing uncompromised outstanding services grew,

2000s So visit us today for the first time, or the hundredth time, and experience the culture that helped shape the salon industry in Rhode Island. We were the first and the original and I would argue that we’re still the best. My staff and I will prove it to you each time you visit us. We invite you to join us. Please visit our website for special offers.

uby is the birthstone of July, and is said to accord wearers happiness wisdom, and health, and to bring particularly good luck to gamblers and lovers.

Rubies are considered to represent devotion, desire and passion and are also considered to be the symbol of eternal love. In ancient times, rubies were thought to counteract poison - and were therefore much in demand! When worn on the skin a ruby is thought to restore youth and vitality. In the Middle Ages, the ruby was viewed as a stone of prophecy - people believed it would darken when its wearer was in danger. Rubies are more than talismans or good-luck charms, they are also quite valuable. Rubies, especially the very fine and large rubies, are rarer than diamonds, emeralds or sapphires. The beauty of their color is without peer.

From the Editor There’s no better time than the warm summer months to jump in the car and go exploring. But why not add a bit of flavor to your day trips? This month, we take you on a guided tour of local wineries and breweries. Aside from expanding your palate and learning a thing or two about hops and tannins, a vineyard is a beautiful (and generally family friendly) place to spend an afternoon. Even if you’re not a connoisseur, we think you’ll like

what you find there. Read on, and take a sip – just make sure you’ve got someone who isn’t tasting an entire bottle to drive you home. Speaking of exploration, this month we talk to a South County couple who just returned from more than three years of sailing around the globe. Read all about it in “Around the World in 1200 Days” – then set out on your own adventure, even if it’s just for the day. -Julie

Whether you’re on the go, or in the mood for a relaxing lunch we invite you to stop in for breakfast or lunch! Normally, walking into a room and seeing two people trying to choke each other might be cause for alarm. But if you’re stepping into the Black Diamond Mixed Martial Arts Academy (formerly the Omoplata Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy), now located in the Peacedale Mill Complex in Wakefield, it’s just business as usual. With the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gaining prominence over the last few years, mixed martial arts (MMA) has become a buzzword. But what exactly is it? Founder/ owner of Black Diamond, Daniel Faggella, explains, “Essentially, mixed martial arts is a conglomerate of relatively recent martial arts forms.” It usually comprises elements and techniques from muay thai kickboxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu and wrestling. It differs from traditional martial arts in that the moves can actually be brought to the floor and practiced on people without killing them. When learning and practicing MMA, you will not see someone chopping and kicking in the air, but rather, literally sparring on the mat. The benefits? Obviously, there is plenty of sweating going on – MMA is a great way to work out. Each class at Black Diamond focuses on a specific martial art. “The first hour teaches the basics of that individual martial art,” Faggella notes. “You’re not going to get sick, you’re not going to get hurt – you’re going to come in, learn some basic martial arts and get a great workout.” Don’t people also take martial arts to learn self-defense strategies? “In traditional martial arts, there is the belief that the

techniques are so deadly, you can’t train live,” he explains. “MMA believes that to be proficient in techniques, you have to actually do them. Doing the moves on another person is the best way to learn self-defense.” For those who want more, each class advances to a mastery level and finally a competitive level. Faggella sees Black Diamond as one-of-a-kind in South County. “We have guys teaching here that actually fight professionally and win,” he boasts. “We have really solid credentials in MMA.” Currently, two of his instructors are the only professional fighters in southern Rhode Island. But competition is not the only focus at Black Diamond. They are expanding their programming to offer more classes tailored to specific groups, such as kids’ Brazilian jiu jitsu and women’s kickboxing. With classes seven days a week, there is a lot of variety. Another unique aspect that takes Black Diamond beyond mere choking of people is Faggella’s training in positive sports psychology. “In considering my impact on the world, I came to the conclusion that if the world knew how to choke people better because I lived, it wasn’t enough,” he admits. He moonlights as a motivational speaker, traveling as far as Maryland and Virginia to deliver talks to school groups and professional organizations on topics like goal setting and mastery in combat sports, and young entrepreneurs in business. A recent URI grad, Daniel brings his enthusiasm for goal setting and achievement into everything he does – on or off the mat. 212 Main Street, Wakefield. 218-0203. www. objja.com –Bethany Vaccaro

The Kodzis look to the island to keep up to date with the most current surf equipment and styles. Lisa and Brian are avid surfers, who opened a surf school, Paddle Surf RI, last summer in Watch Hill. Brian was first introduced to the sport at age eight, and has been hooked for the last 25 years; Lisa was introduced to surfing by her husband in 2005. “That year, Brian took me to Maui for the first time and I jumped on the surf wagon ever since,” she recalls. The Kodzis befriended one of the

top surfing pros, Jamie Sterling, during their frequent trips to Oahu. Sterling agreed to make the trip to Rhode Island this summer to share his knowledge with the local enthusiasts; he and Paddle Surf RI local instructors will team together to teach the classes. The camp runs July 2529, from 7-10am at Fenway beach in Misquamicut. “We use only the best local surfers and lifeguards for surf instructors,” Lisa stresses, so no matter if you are new to surfing or have been tearing up waves for years, you can expect to learn a thing or two at the Kodzis’ surf camp this summer. Gardeners Hit the Road The old saw that April showers bring May flowers is true most years. But URI Master Gardeners are betting that this year, with its wet spring, will result in a profusion of blooms just in time for their biennial statewide garden tour. On July 16-17, 32 gardens either owned or maintained by URI Master Gardeners will be involved in the 2011 Gardening With the Masters Garden Tour. From Westerly to Pascoag, and Newport to Barrington, gardens of all sizes and themes will be open to the visitors; tickets are good for both days. The $15 “tickets” are actually booklets that contain descriptions of each of the gardens, complete with directions to find them. Ticket holders have two days to decide which ones to visit and there have been reports that garden tour visitors in the past have tried

to visit them all. The tour is unique in that the gardens are spread all over the state. The event is a fundraiser that supports Master Gardener educational programs throughout the state, including community gardens and school projects. The tour itself is educational, with each garden staffed by the owners and maintainers. Docents are on the premises during tour hours (10am-4pm each day) and there are handouts describing the plants and themes. Some sites offer refreshments. Visitors are encouraged to bring cameras, take notes and ask lots of questions. Tickets are available by calling the Mallon Outreach Center at URI (874-2900) or online at www.urimga.org, as well as at a number of garden shops and nurseries around South County. –Rudi Hempe

BUILDING DIVISION usually range from outrageous (become superhero, save world) to reasonable (get married, have family). Somewhere in between are the highly unlikely dreams, like build a boat and sail it around the world. But as far back as she can remember, Julia Taylor has wanted to circumnavigate the globe in a boat of her own making, and as unlikely as it may sound, she just got back from doing it. From Rhode Island, south through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific to New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia, along the Southeast Asian, Middle East, and Mediterranean coasts, and across the Atlantic, the three-and-a-half-year journey ended this spring. It wasn’t a cruise. It wasn’t a tour. It was the experience of a lifetime and a dream come true. Her brother John was in on the dream when they were kids. He helped her acquire and store a wood hull in 1992. Architects drew up plans, which Julia and an old family carpenter and friend, Macy, dismissed as just “a point of departure,” she says, with a smile. Her brother eventually moved to Maryland, and Julia’s mother had to help her secure someplace new, in Newport, to house the hull. By 2001, the dream was still just a hull and a bunch of plans. It became clear she’d never finish the boat while working full-time. So Julia traded the security of a good yacht club job for her dream. For over two years she bartered parttime work to rent a home in Jamestown with her son Ben, picking up every build-a-boat book she could find. Directed by Macy, who was now in his seventies and in failing health, she got help from her brother (back from Maryland), and met Dave Goss, a guy with a thing for boats and a thing for Julia. “I always knew there was a wooden boat in my future,” she says. With a crew now, she confirmed that “nothing about a boat is square,” and smiles as she describes the demanding, profound lessons culled from epoxy and sanding. Her mantra became, “I put myself here; there’s no place I’d rather be,” as the work, and time, ticked by. Macy unfortunately died before the boat launched, but with the knowledge that his name would take its rightful place on the hull. The Macy launched in 2004. Like Julia, Dave had a teenage son, Arlin, and both kids were aboard for the maiden voyage, with home-schooling on the docket and circumnavigation on everyone’s mind.

With a giant tortoise in Galapagos After so much painstaking time to build the Macy, there was “unfinished business” on the mainland before the full voyage could begin, like the acquisition of a much-needed autopilot, and the rest of high school for Julia’s 10th grader, who wasn’t ready to trade lifestyles. He joined his father back in Rhode Island while Julia and crew waited out hurricane season for six months in Panama. A year and a half later, in the fall of 2007, with Julia’s son graduated and Dave’s son in college (and an autopilot on board), their true voyage began. In late October, in a gale, they sailed down the coast to Beaufort, North Carolina, from there to the Bahamas, and then all the way to Honduras in the trip’s longest passage to date. They spent Christmas in Honduras, joined by their boys. On to Panama. They were joined there for a while by Julia’s sister, South County acupuncturist Nancy Graham. (Families visited off and on throughout the journey, a common thread among round-trippers, many of whom take 10 years to make it around.) The next leg took them through the

Dave Goss with a perfect size mahi mahi for dinner Panama Canal to Galapagos, then 24 days and 3000 miles to Marquesas in calm seas, where they kept up their spinnaker for a week at a time, a rare sailing luxury. Julia says they made “basically a milk run” through French Polynesia, Tahiti, American Samoa (where they happened upon the Pacific Arts Festival), then Tonga, where they saw the newly crowned king. Between Bora Bora and the Cook Islands, they ran into severe weather in 35- to 40-knot seas, the first passage that put them below deck. Things calmed somewhat from Fiji to New Zealand, where they rented a place and did maintenance on the knocked-around boat for some laid-back months. Next up were coral reefs in northern Australia, three months in Indonesia, where they discovered friendly people and fascinating cultures, then beautiful stops in Malaysia and Thailand, across the Indian Ocean, into the Maldives, and on to the Middle East. There, beginning in Oman, they experienced a shift from the tropical nature of the earlier ports, where people were geared to visits from foreigners. Radio reports of pirates accompa-

nied their voyage along the 500-mile “Pirate Alley” to Yemen. (Traveling in convoys with other boaters is a common defensive measure, although it was something Julia and Dave avoided for the most part, since their pace was faster than most.) In exotic Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt they found poverty, war, deserts, camels and people far less engaged in the arrival of foreign visitors, often because of the local political climates. For the first time, Julia says, “We felt like intruders.” From the Suez they sailed to Turkey, where they spent three marvelous months along the coast, welcomed into Turkey’s culture, markets and history. Then came Greece, Italy and their respective islands. The Mediterranean’s radically changeable weather and “no real protected harbors” produced a surprisingly tough passage. But once beyond Spain and Gibraltar, Morocco afforded them a friendly harbor from which they took a train to the legendary Marrakesh and Casablanca.

A tough Atlantic passage followed, first to the Canary Islands in 35- to 40knot weather and a wealth of shipping all around. “We were unsafe on deck,” she says. “Things flew that had never flown before. We worried that ships wouldn’t see us.” She radioed warnings of their presence and waited for trade winds to arrive, which they did, like Santa Claus, helping to complete the 2200 miles to Barbados on Christmas Eve. The boat’s head stay broke on Grenada, a great place for repairs. (All of the trip’s emergencies occurred at right times, in right places, which Julia attributes to her old mentor. “Macy was watching over us,” she says.) Day sails among eastern Caribbean islands led to Bermuda, from which they left only a moment before bad weather hit, still having to sail west in dense fog. “We didn’t see a thing until we saw Fort Adams,” Julia recalls. A couple of days along Narragansett Bay and Prudence Island, and suddenly “it’s as if we never left,” she says,

The Macy pulling up anchor in San Bias Islands, Panama three-and-a-half-years and 34,000 miles later. Looking back, Julia recalls the mental and physical stamina required on long days in close quarters, feeling “like an astronaut in a capsule.” During tough times, she often thought, “I’d rather be in the shop, building the boat.” But most of the time the trip was an event of such magnitude that even the notion of a highlight reel seems paltry. The monumental experience of being the captain on a boat she made, among so many cultures and people, almost all of whom grasped at least two languages and offered kindness to strangers, is sublime. It makes her look at foreign visitors here a lot differently. “At least make an effort to engage,” she says, knowing it makes a world of difference. Her father was a bit of a dreamer, who once told Julia to “Make sure you dream really high, because if you achieve your dream, then what?” Not a bad question, under the circumstances. “I’d like to hang a picture,” she says. “I’d like the freedom to spend money.” (She has no house, no retirement money, no job for that matter. All her money went into the boat.) But imagine being able to say, whenever the subject of traveling the globe comes up, “Been there, done that.” When Julia Taylor sits back for a moment, contemplating the entirety of the last ten years and the completion of a dream, she wells up, smiles and says, “I did it.”

or a small place, Rhode Island is home to a surprisingly large number of breweries and vineyards, stretching from the southernmost point in the state to the northern reaches, all the way up into Providence, and even Cumberland. If you’re looking to explore what’s brewing locally, a great place to start is with the Coastal Wine Trail (www. coastalwinetrail.com). This tour of Southern New England vineyards stretches from the tip of Cape Cod down to Connecticut. South County’s only vineyard on the trail is Langworthy Farm in Westerly, which is where we’ll begin our tasting tour. Built in 1875 on the site of Governor

Langworthy Farm

Samuel Ward’s home, owners Joe and Gail Sharry began operating the historic Langworthy Farm as a bed and breakfast in 2000 and started releasing wines in 2005. Guests of the inn can book a Wine Lovers Weekend, where groups of six enjoy a weekend away (Langworthy Farm is a short walk away from Misquamicut Beach), plus a private winery tour and tasting with wine and cheese. For day-trippers, the vineyard’s tasting room is open daily during the summer months, and on the weekends in the off-season. Like the property itself, Langworthy Farm Winery draws upon local historic roots for its wine inspiration. For

reds, try the Napatree Cabernet Sauvignon, the Avondale Cabernet Merlot (made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc grapes and 20% Merlot) or the Misquamicut Merlot, aged for a year in American Oak barrels. For whites, the unoaked Weekapaug White is a clean-tasting, easily drinkable blend, and the Westerly White, which is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc grapes, has some sweetness and body to it. 308 Shore Road, Westerly. 322-7791, www.langworthyfarm.com To the east, Aquidneck Island offers a variety of tippling options, and enough tastings to take up your entire day. Take a departure from swirling, sniffing and sipping and head to Coastal Extreme Brewery in Newport. The brewery is best known for its Newport Storm beers, including the

signature Hurricane Amber Ale that’s available at bars and liquor stores all over New England, but Coastal Extreme produces a large selection of brews and also distills Thomas Tew Rum, a dark rum channeling the legend of Newport’s most famous pirate that’s perfect for a Dark and Stormy cocktail. Tours of the facility are available daily, except Tuesdays, from noon5pm. In June, the brewers cut the ribbon on a fancy new tasting room, where guests can sample the company’s libations. (Tours with beer tastings are $7, tours with rum tastings are $9, both come with a souvenir glass.) In addition to the Newport Storm brews that are available all year, guests will taste what’s on tap for the season – anything from Rhode Island Blueberry to Regen-

schauer Oktoberfest – and a sampling of the brewery’s limited releases, like something from the annual Cyclone Series. Tasting is always more fun in groups, and later this summer, Coastal Extreme is hosting one enormous tasting event. Tickets are on sale now for the 13th annual Newport Storm Luau, which is a massive, thousandperson fundraiser at Fort Adams, to be held this year on August 20. 293 J.T. Connell Road, Newport. 8495232, www.newportstorm.com In Middletown, stop at Newport Vineyards. The Nunes Family made its first foray into winemaking in 1977 with the first planting of grapes on Nunes Farm (which dates back to 1701), and started bottling under a different name in 1988. John and Paul Nunes established Newport Vineyards in 1995, and won their first gold medal at the Eastern International Wine Competition for their Great White just three years later. Since then, the accolades have continued to pour in – from their Ice Wine being voted one of the top 50 in the US in 1999 to their Riesling winning best of show at the 2008 Jefferson Cup Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition (and also in 1999 at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition) to the US Embassies in Barbados and Ukraine choosing to pour their wines in recent years. As the largest producer of grapes in New England, the sheer scope of Newport’s land is a sight to behold. A vineyard tour, offered daily at 1 and 3pm, will take you behind the scenes to get a glimpse of the winemaking process and through the fields themselves. Aquidneck Island’s microclimate (warmer air coming in off the ocean lengthens the growing season and the island’s surrounding land insulates it from harsh cold) makes for

a particularly favorable growing season, so any time between late spring and late October is a good time to visit. The level of precision when it comes to positioning vines to maximize sun exposure to the grapes (and thereby maximize their sugar content, making for better tasting wine) really speaks to the level of skill it takes to produce good wine. The staff literally goes through each vine, removing leaves that block sun exposure to the fruit. The vineyard’s size allows for growing many different kinds of grapes, which in turn allows them to make a wide and varied selection of wines. Newport currently offers nearly 30 different bottles, along with their Brut Sparkling Wine and Rhody Coyote Hard Cider – almost all of which are available to try in their tasting room. John recommends the In the Buff Unoaked Chardonnay to those who enjoy a crisp white; lovers of Pinot Noir will enjoy the rich fruitiness of the berry-forward Rochambeau, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Landot Noir grapes. And

for those who are intent on trying them all, Newport Vineyards offers shuttle service to and from the Newport Visitors Center. 909 East Main Road, Middletown. 848-5161, www. newportvineyards.com Also in Middletown, Coddington Brewing Company is a brewpub and restaurant that creates all of its beers in house – which is no small feat, considering that the place lays claim to 33 different brews. Depending on the season, find anything from Pumpkin Ale to Scottish Heavy and Czech Pilsner to English Mild. During the summer, indulge in a lighter beer like a Hefeweizen or Watermelon Beer, garnished with a slice of the fruit. For the complete picture on Coddington’s brews, order a flight, which will give you a seven-ounce pour of each beer the pub currently has on tap. While the beers aren’t available for sale outside the pub, they do offer 64 ounce growlers to take home and enjoy – and bring back to be filled and enjoyed again. 210 Coddington Highway, Middletown. 847-

6690, www.coddbrew.com One town over, Portsmouth is home to the perfectly scenic Greenvale Vineyards. Set on a hill directly overlooking the Sakonnet River, the grapes benefit from the warm sea air, which keeps them dry and avoids the always looming-threat of vine rot. While this vineyard is smaller and has less room to grow fruit, the winemakers there focus on making smaller batches of completely estate-grown wines. Cortlandt and Nancy Knowles Parker (founder of the New England Wine Gazette) started growing grapes as a hobby in the 1960s, and in 1992 realized that they had the kind of quality vines necessary to produce commercial wine. The fourth generation on that 1860 farm, the Parkers, their daughter Nancy Parker-Wilson and her husband William Wilson have focused on revitalizing and preserving the historic Greenvale farm, even turning an old stable into a beautiful new tasting space.

Sakonnet Vineyards

In keeping with their emphasis on preservation and history, Greenvale’s wines are a nod to Rhode Island’s storied past: The Elms Meritage is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot; Rosecliff Pinot Gris, a grape particularly suited to growing on Aquidneck Island, is light and aromatic. Nancy Parker-Wilson describes that as her “go-to” wine that’s always easy to enjoy. Other offerings include Vidal Blanc, Skipping Stone White and several bottles of Chardonnay. Daily tastings of Greenvale’s wines are available and a vineyard tour departs at 2pm every day. With a couple of weeks notice, a private tour and tasting can be arranged for only $15 per person. The stable also hosts live music every Saturday in warm weather. During that time, Jazz Tastings are available for a slightly higher fee than the ordinary tastings. Or, you can bring a blanket and a picnic and buy a bottle of Greenvale’s wine to enjoy during the show. 582 Wap-

ping Road, Portsmouth. 847-3777, www.greenvale.com Cross the river and you’ll find yourself at Little Compton’s Sakonnet Vineyards. Beware: it’s easy to lose track of time at this charming spot, with its views of the water in the distance and rows of vines as far as the eye can see. The vineyard grows 50 acres of Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Vidal Blanc grapes. In the tasting room, you’ll recognize some bottles: Sakonnet’s Vidal Blanc is a fixture on the wine lists of many local restaurants, and for good reason: the light-bodied white with hints of citrus is affordably priced and easily drinkable with or without food. Also make sure to try their Cock of the Walk Red and Cock of the Walk White, which are new bottles of classic table wine preparations. And even if you think you don’t enjoy sweet wines, don’t leave without tasting the vineyard’s Winterwine. This ice wine (which means the grapes are left on the vine through the first few frosts, allowing them to freeze and release their sugars) is among the best available anywhere. Tours are available at noon and 3pm, and include a video presentation of the season’s winemaking process, so you can see all of the steps, not just the one happening at the time of your visit. Tastings are available all day, and their selection of cheeses and edibles in the tasting room encourages you to linger over a glass of your favorite wine. 170 West Main Road, Little Compton. 800-919- 4637, www.sakonnetwine.com To the north, discover newer entries into brewing and bottling,

along with established favorites. In Coventry, Shelalara Vineyards and Winery takes a worldly approach to winemaking. Sourcing their grapes from major winemaking regions such as California and Australia, the vineyard produces a variety of traditional bottles like their 2007 California Chardonnay and 2007 California Merlot, and some lesser known varietals like a limited edition 2005 Amarone, sourced from Italian grapes, hand numbered and handsealed with wax. Shelalara also produces three Glacier wines, which are sweet dessert wines similar to ice wines – one of which, the 2006 Red Glacier “Frozen Fire,” is a lesser seen red dessert wine. (Most afterdinner reds are Port.) The vineyard also produces a variety of unique

fruit wines like Green Apple Gert and Passion Peach Chardonnay. A vineyard tour and tasting is available for $8 on weekends through the summer. 21 Reservoir Road, Coventry. 623-8606, www.shelalara.com While Providence isn’t home to any urban wineries, it is home to two breweries that are worth a visit. The first, Union Station Brewery, is housed in the old Providence train station in Exchange Terrace. This brewpub is a casual restaurant where the brewed-on-site beers are the stars; on a given day, expect to find five or six different offerings. Try them all in a flight, or join the Mug Club and try one of each (as long as you aren’t going to be driving home afterwards). Trinity Brewhouse is another

brewpub, and also located downtown, but it’s unique for several reasons. First, Trinity’s beer won the bronze medal in the World Beer Cup for its Russian Imperial Stout in 1996, during its first year of existence. Second, brewmaster Sean Larkin is also responsible for crafting Narragansett Beer’s specialty seasonal creations (like their Porter, Lager and Summer Ale) and is currently working on his own private creations under the name Revival Brewing. Third, while there are always a number of unique brews on tap – like Kolsh (a German Altbier), a Belgian White Ale and Tommy’s Red – Trinity’s Rhode Island I.P.A. is widely available throughout the state. and Blackberry Wine. Their Cranberry-Apple offering is a visitor favorite. Tours and tastings are available daily in the farmhouse. 3145 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland. 333-2751, www. favorlabel.com If you’re willing to venture out of the state, Connecticut offers numerous options for expanding your Dionysian pursuits, just over the border. Closest to Rhode Island is Cottrell Brewing Company, next to Westerly in Pawcatuck, which is the oldest continuously operating brewery in Connecticut. It was founded by Calvert B. Cottrell (a descendant of Nicholas Cottrell, who was an original founder of the town of Westerly) in 1855, and is now run by Calvert’s great, great grandson, Charles Cottrell Buffum, Jr., whose first beer came off the line in 1997. That year, the release won the red ribbon at the Great Northeast International Beer Exposition; the next, it won bronze at the World Beer Championships. Cottrell’s signature brew is Old Yankee Ale, a medium-bodied amber ale that’s largely available in southern New England liquor stores. The brewery recently released Mystic Bridge I.P.A., a drinkable brew with

hints of citrus. Tours and tastings are available Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. 100 Mechanic Street #22, Pawcatuck, CT. 860-599-8213, www.cottrellbrewing.com Nearby, the town of Stonington offers a lot for the aspiring oenophile. Stonington Vineyards, perched by the ocean, has been producing awardwinning wines since it was founded in 1987 by Nick and Happy Smith. Its proximity to the water facilitates a long, cool growing season, where Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc grapes thrive. The winery is widely recognized for its fine Chardonnays, which are aged in French oak and made using traditional French winemaking methods. In addition, the Seaport White is an easily drinkable blend that’s quite popular with visitors. Tours are available daily at 2pm, and include a tasting of all six of Stonington’s wines, for $10. On July 16-17, the winery will host its 14th annual Summer Wine and Food Festival, offering wine tastings, food vendors, live music and entertainment. Additionally, Stonington will offer live music on select Sundays in August. 523 Taugwonk Road, Stonington, CT. 860-5351222, www.stoningtonvineyards.com In North Stonington is Jonathan Edwards Winery, which offers both estate-grown wines and wines from grapes sourced in Napa Valley. Because of the differences in growing conditions on the two coasts, the wines are quite distinct. (Edwards lived in Napa before relocating to Connecticut.) During tastings, the differences in those wines are highlighted: the 2009 Estate Connecticut Chardonnay has crisp lemon and green apple notes, whereas the 2008 Napa Valley Chardonnay is oaky and redolent of tropical fruits. Saltwater Farm Vineyard is a relatively new winery with quite a lot of history. Set on 100 tidal acres in Wequetequock Cove, the property’s history dates back to the 17th century, and played an important role in pre-World War II aviation. The airport that was once there was built by John W. Lincoln, who is credited with creating the Quonset Hut. Now, the hangar is revitalized, serving as the main tasting room and event space of the winery, which is cel-

What are the three most important considerations in planning an event? When you’re planning an event, as cliché as it sounds, the details are the most important thing. We say that we’re much like a builder, where the best projects are planned before a shovel even hits the ground. During a function, something will inevitably come up, and we can handle it because we’ve already thought through every detail. You and your sister Ann co-own Fancy Pants. What’s it like co-owning a business as sisters? It’s great. It’s really fun. We get to see a different side of one another. It makes us appreciate our relationship on a different level. We think differently, but at the same time, we know each other and it’s a great dynamic. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Weddings specifically are such a personal event for people, that to have two sisters working on it just adds to that, and our brides really enjoy working with us for that reason. The more personal it gets, the better.

Photography: Amy Amerantes

Tell me about the best party you ever planned. I did a Newport event called Newport Under the Stars, with a sailing regatta and a gala dinner. It was a three-day event and it was fabulous. What’s the trend with weddings this year? Gray is really popular, believe it or not, as a complimentary color: lavender and gray, coral and gray – as opposed to black and white. Gray is the new black. You heard it here first. Trends repeat themselves, but change every year. A signature cocktail is a trend that’s here to stay. Ann and Margaret dings need to be. Do you see that happening? I think it’s the opposite, truth be told. A lot of people go into the planning with the idea that they don’t want to take things so seriously – and that’s really important, people want it to be a fun experience – but it’s a formal occasion, and the planning naturally starts to lend formality to the process. People are really embracing doing interactive things like lawn games, a wine tasting or a photo booth, so guests have a lot of fun. The formality stays just because of the nature of the event. How do you create an intimate feel with a large scale event? Lounge spaces. It’s not just the round tables anymore. We think beyond sitting down for dinner, and we work with some great vendors in the area who specialize in décor. We do lounge areas and seating spaces for people to sit and hang out. You’re part of the South County Wedding & Event Professionals Group. What’s that? It’s a networking group that’s been recently established. We’re wedding

and event professionals in southern Rhode Island, and it’s a resource for people getting married in the area. It’s nice to be a part of, because Rhode Island is a small community, and it’s just nice to support local businesses. What is the true mark of a fantastic event? I use this term: pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. That’s what I say all the time behind the scenes. The true mark of a successful event is when the guests have a great time, and everything runs smoothly, and their goals are met – and they pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. We’re there so the bride can enjoy one of the sweetest milestones of her life, and so she’s not worried about the details: when to cut the cake, when to make the toasts. She needs to have a good time, he needs to have a good time – we’re there to make sure that things go smoothly so that can happen. Anyone who appreciates pop culture through the ages and has an affinity for knick-knacks will delight in the treasure trove that is POP: Emporium of Popular Culture. The myriad memorabilia and artifacts is the fruition of over 30 years of collecting by owner Darren Hill. Although he accumulated some of the items through his childhood years, many of his collectables were accrued on the road while touring as a musician. (Hill played bass guitar for three bands in his 16year career, one of which opened for U2.) He browsed junk shops, antique shops, yard sales and flea markets in his spare time. “When I started a family, I realized I couldn’t be on the road all the time, so I transitioned to the management side of music,” he explains. Instead, he started his own company, Ten Pin Management, and now successfully manages national bands. “That is my day job, and the store is my hobby job.” An original Pong game waits at the entrance to store, which Hill says fascinates POP’s youngest shoppers. “They can’t believe that was the first video game,” he notes. Paintings, records (“Vinyl is making a comeback,” Hill enthuses), vintage signs and posters, and other neat décor line the walls of the voluminous shop. I spot a 1960s Mustang grill, which I can imagine be-

coming a cool mantle piece. Anything from books, games and clothing (vintage bowling shirts, anyone?) to dinosaur bones and model figurines can be found, and only a few minutes of browsing is enough to pique my curiosity. Every piece in the shop has a story, and that is what makes the selection so interesting. The artifacts are worth more than the price tag; they are pieces of history. Any Rhode Islander over 25 is sure to appreciate Rocky Point ads from 1917, and for some, the old cartoon commercial reels playing on a television will spark memories of the age of black-and-white. POP, which opened earlier this month, is a one-of-a-kind, nostalgic addition to East Greenwich’s quaint shops and fine restaurants. Curious shoppers old and young enjoy the fun, spirited atmosphere of the store, which allows them to reminisce on simpler times. Some may recapture childhood memories that seem far behind them. “One of the most rewarding things is seeing parents come in with their kids and share memories of their own childhoods,” Hill says. New memories are created where old memories flourish at POP. 142 Duke Street, East Greenwich. 8855050, www.emporiumofpopularculture.com

Two If By Sea A Point Judith getaway that became a home

THAT LIVED-IN FEEL: This coastal home was both moved from its original location and completely renovated

Photography: Melissa Stimpson Photography

Tucked away on a quiet, two-lane road leading to the iconic Point Judith lighthouse, Rosepoint catches the eye of passersby with its cottage charm and calming allure. But before its manicured gardens matured, cobalt blue Adirondack chairs peppered the property and Coastal Living-esque perfection was achieved, there was an intriguing and laborious history the home had survived. “This house was moved here from Fisherman’s in 1945, at the end of the war when they broke down all the military housing that was up there,” says Mary Ann Liscio, who owns the home with Hope Sunshine. “People who owned a lot could buy them at auction. I think they bought the houses for a dollar, as long as they could move them.” Built by the Army Corps of Engineers during the Second World War, the home was moved to its present day location just a stone’s throw from a bluff overlooking the sea. By the time she bought it with her then-husband in 1977, the ramshackle

bungalow was in dire straights. Describing the workmanship through the years prior to the purchase as “refurbished with spit,” the couple had their work cut out for them. “I mean, it was terrible,” Mary Ann concedes. “There were 14 rook leaks. I slept with pots and pans.” After her divorce was finalized in 1986, Mary Ann and Hope upgraded the house to what they describe as “livable.” Hope admits it wasn’t exactly a dream house at the time. “But we bought this,” Mary Ann explains, both arms extended in the direction of the panoramic views of the crashing waves seen from the front and side windows of the home. “We bought the ocean, so it’s come a long way over the past 30 years.” “Livable” status sufficed for a while as both women were busy professionals in the New York suburbs who escaped to their Ocean State retreat whenever time allowed. But in 2003, the two decided it was time to give the salt-sprayed gem the attention it so desperately needed

and deserved. “We wanted the view and to open the space so that no matter where you are, you could see everything, because that’s what makes the house,” says Mary Ann. “It was all about maximizing the location, but we wanted something that offered everything that a full time house did. It really became solid.” “We basically gutted the inside,” Hope divulges. The home adopted a thoroughly modern open floor plan on the main level, where the comfortable living space blends into the dining room. There, a custom built table, crafted by hand by Mary Ann’s son, ensures everyone has a good seat. Gleaming hardwoods marry the two spaces, and the kitchen, located off the living room, is open and lofty with vaulted ceilings, an off-white color palette and tile floors that make sweeping up after the sand-covered, pitter-patter of grandchildren’s feet simple. Adding an open and airy aesthetic, the two opted to transform an old storage closet into an exposed, organized pantry space,

which comes in handy as the two share a love of cooking. “The only thing that is still original to the house from the very beginning is the fireplace,” says Hope, pointing to the floor-to-ceiling stone hearth that anchors the main living quarters, flanked by a pair of nautical lanterns. “The stone came from the beach. If you look closely you can see shells,” adds Mary Ann. “We saved it over the years.” The two worked tirelessly to clean the surface, restoring it to its natural hue, and inserted a gas stove so that warming by the fire on a cold day is easily done with the flip of a switch. Upstairs, the master bedroom offers ocean views from a pair of decks, and in the dark of night, the lights of the Newport Bridge twinkle in the distance. A second bedroom has been dubbed “the dormitory,” as children and their children’s children all have plenty of room to rest their heads after long days frolicking in the waves. Since retiring, the once summer house

has turned into a more permanent home for the two. Mary Ann has had the opportunity to focus more intently on her artwork, often inspired by the breathtaking vista outside her window and frequently seen in galleries throughout the Ocean State (and the home). She also teaches her craft at the local art association, the South Kingstown Guild. A newly constructed studio, however, has allowed her to truly revel in her passion. “It made such a difference,” she says, basking in the natural light pouring though the windows. “My son added it last year. This was a porch, and you know, we never used this side of the porch at all, and now we get so much use out of this little

area. It’s just wonderful here. And whoever has this bedroom on the weekends has a suite now.” The “whoever” she refers to is the many family and friends that visit throughout the summer. Of course, anyone with a cottage by the sea will tell you there is never a shortage of visiting friends in the summer months, but Mary Ann and Hope enjoy playing hostesses. “We entertain a lot,” Hope laughs. “We have dinner parties all the time, have friends over, quite often we’ll have a bonfire. We have a fire pit out on the lawn. Fourth of July we always have a crowd out there. This is just really made for entertaining.” Accommodating a gathering was

made easier when the two replaced an old porch swing with a built-in couch decorated with plush, weather resistant cushions. “Now we’re loving this,” says Mary Ann. “It was such a nice change because you can fit a lot of people and I have the candles in the background, so at night it’s so pretty. We never spent a lot of time out there; now, we just live out there. It has a real New England flavor.” While most think of the joy of a summer beach cottage on warm, summer days, Rosepoint basks in the salty spray of a storm and on foggy days and night, the nearby lighthouse’s warning serenades the neighborhood. Says Hope, “We just love it.”

Rise of the Machines Learning the mechanics of Gyrotonic Pilates

Illustration: Karli Hendrickson

If there are two emotional reactions people have when adding new exercise equipment to their workout, my guess is they would be: A) Fear and anxiety that the equipment will inevitably result in a tiring, back breaking or embarrassing workout, or B) Excitement and general belief that it will make the workout more interesting and fun. I typically fall towards the “intrigue and curiosity” side of these two emotions. While I proceed with caution to any new machine, I find my ethos on exercise and equipment is somewhat similar to that of food: I’ll try anything once if it intrigues me. Knowing how lithe and strong Madonna’s body got from Pilates, a workout that can be more or less equipment intensive depending on what route you wish to take, I always wanted to try it. I opted to try Gyrotonic. Using elements of both yoga and pilates along with tai chi and swimming, the Gyrotonic exercise system relies heavily on equipment. To try out the equipment-laden exercise, I went to DeeDee Potts, a Gyrotonic certified instructor and the owner of Pilates West Bay in East Greenwich. While the equipment was large and a bit intimidating, DeeDee explained that every apparatus was easily adjustable to all body types and levels of shape. We started the workout at “The Pulley Tower,” the main piece of equipment. On this machine, DeeDee helped me to work out nearly every part of my body while making me stretch in ways I didn’t think were possible. While extending and stretching my arms, legs, torso and back, I got a positive feeling similar to cracking my knuckles, only I was

“cracking” my entire body. As DeeDee literally heard my bones moving from being stretched, she explained that this workout was specifically designed to help strengthen and stimulate the connective tissues in and around the joints in the body. We then moved to the “Jumping Stretch Board” where the exercises became more focused on certain parts of the body. This piece of equipment provided a little more resistance and weight. It was similar to using very light dumbbells in a more fluid motion. This is also where we concentrated working on my spine, an area DeeDee said most people have “blocked” due to lack of stretching, articulation and strengthening. As this was my first lesson, and a lot of stretching and extending was involved, DeeDee mostly worked with me on these two machines. She would layer on the difficulty, pushing me but not punishing me. While we were going slower and focusing more on making sure I was aligned I noted how the fluidity of motion was similar to that of swimming or dancing. We finished with a great balancing and meditative cool-down period. DeeDee made me move around, twirl and breathe deeply, showing me how I was more focused and intune with my body. After my session with DeeDee, I surmised that my equipment-heavy workout did give me the latter emotional reaction I mentioned earlier: excitement and the realization that equipment, if used properly, can be fun. 5 Division Street, East Greenwich. 261-4137, www. pilateswestbay.com

From Farm to Market A delicious season at the farmers’ market

607 Main St, Wakefield 401-789-8715

Well, we’ve settled

in for another summer in our little cottage near Scarborough Beach in Narragansett. The landscaping has been spruced up, and there’s a new coat of paint on the exterior. My tomato garden is looking good, and I expect to have my first ripe tomato sometime this month. My basil is also coming along nicely. We’ll be making pesto before too long – it’s one of our summer traditions. Most of my plants came from the South Kingstown Farmers’ Market, located at the University of Rhode Island’s East Farm on Route 108. This is Rhode Island’s longest running farmers’ market, established in 1982. Rain or shine, the market is open every Saturday from 8:30am-noon. I’ve learned it’s wise to go early, especially if you’re looking to buy some of the yummy baked goods. (The South Kingstown Farmers’ Market is also open every Tuesday from 2-6pm at Marina Park off Route 1 in Wakefield.) This year, the market looks better than ever, with all kinds of fresh vegetables and fruit on display, along with plants of every kind, colorful cut flowers, local honey and maple syrup, grass-fed beef and lamb, herbal products, and totally addictive kettle corn. Eggs fresh from the farm, hearty breads fresh from the oven, and oysters, littleneck clams and mussels fresh from the sea – all that and more is offered each week. Last month, the asparagus and lettuce were in season. This month, we’ll be looking for eggplant and zucchini. Next month, we’ll be buying the sweetest corn imaginable as well as all kinds of berries. Some weeks there’s even live entertainment – a little bluegrass to chase your blues away. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning! GRINNELL INN REOPENS For years, we’ve been driving past the Grinnell Inn on Narragansett Avenue near the Narragansett Pier section of town, wondering if it ever would reopen. Bob and Selena Lavoie are doing just that, renovating the bed-and-breakfast and its restaurant, which will be called Riptide. The new Grinnell Inn will have seven rooms, each with a different theme. The rooms will be available on a nightly and weekly basis. The adjacent restaurant will

be open to guests and the public, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. According to Bob Lavoie, the menu will feature salads, burgers, wraps and clam cakes. In nice weather, guests will be able to dine on the wraparound deck. For more info, call 284-3930. NANA’S NEW VENTURE Another one of our summer traditions is going to Nana’s Ice Cream and Gelato Café in the Pier Market next to the Village Inn. This year we’ll also be checking out Nana’s Candy Bar just around the corner in the space formerly occupied by Sweet Twist. (Sweet Twist is still operating its East Greenwich location.) The new candy store features an 18-foot wall of candy, including the penny candy favorites of long ago. In addition, Nana’s Candy Bar offers jelly beans and assorted chocolates, saltwater taffy and handmade fudge. Children visiting the shop are given little beach pails to put their candy in, which will make the shopping experience even more fun for them. POPCORN AND CUPCAKES The former Dippin’ Dots ice cream shop in Galilee is the new home of the Popcorn Sailor, 294 Great Island Road. Kayla and Chad Hetherington are the creative owners who promise to do “anything and everything” when it comes to popcorn. About two-dozen flavors of popcorn are served, with some being savory, glazed

or coated. Some of the flavors are cheddar cheese, cinnamon, strawberry, grape and chocolate. The couple got the idea for the Popcorn Sailor while on their honeymoon in Florida, where they experienced new and unusual popcorn flavors. The shop also offers coffee and breakfast pastries. They plan to be open every day at 7am to serve the early morning travelers on the Block Island Ferry. PattiCakes, an upscale shop specializing in cupcakes, has opened at the Quo Vadis Shopping Center, 542 Kingstown Road in Wakefield. Outrageous cupcakes are all the rage in Boston and New York. Even Providence has five cupcakeries. PattiCakes cupcakes aren’t anything like the ones your mother used to make; they are sinful guilty pleasures. Red velvet cupcakes and buttermilk blueberry cupcakes with bacon and maple syrup are just two of their specialties. Owners Douglas and Patricia Alley also design and create wedding cakes. (RE)OPEN FOR BUSINESS Red Stripe has reopened at the Salt Pond Shopping Center in Narragansett. The restaurant now offers a family-friendly menu featuring South County favorites and bistro-style classics. Red Stripe serves lunch and dinner every day of the week. On the Waterfront Good taste in East Greenwich – with the perfect view Like a couple of seagulls,

Nautika Nicoise Salad East Greenwich Marina. This is where I want to be on a perfect summer day or a balmy summer night. The menu is a tasty two pages with lots of fresh seafood and a dash of Italy. For instance, the Nautika Chowda ($5) is a bowl of real Rhode Island chowder, the clear variety, made with pancetta rather than the usual salt pork or bacon. This was very good chowder with the clean taste of the sea and tender chunks of well-cooked potatoes. To go with the chowder, we

ordered the Bite-Sized Clam Cakes (a pricey $10 for a small basket). They too were all that we hoped for, golden brown and slightly crunchy on the outside, full of real clam flavor and almost fluffy on the inside. The Baby Spinach Salad ($9) is a big winner with its fresh peach slices, plump blueberries, port wine vinaigrette and candied pecan garnish. Several entrees tempted me, but my eyes kept returning to the Ravioli Nautika ($22). The key ingredients of this dish included some of my favorite foods: pasta, crabmeat, vodka sauce and artichokes. I was served a generous platter of large ravioli, each one stuffed with crabmeat and spinach, coated with a vodka tomato cream sauce, and garnished with grilled artichokes. Overall, this was a good pasta dish with the ravioli cooked thoroughly and still tender, but the creamy sauce completely overpowered the delicate taste of the crabmeat. Nautika has many Italian dishes on its menu, but you’ll also find some creative New England fare, an allAmerican burger and a very French salad Nicoise. From the “mix’n match” section of the menu, Brian chose the Roasted Haddock ($19) paired with extra virgin olive oil and lemon. The generous

serving of haddock was moist and delicious. Other mix’n match possibilities are grilled Atlantic salmon, native swordfish, yellowfin tuna and white shrimp, and they can be paired with lemon-oregano aioli, fra diavolo salsa, scampi butter or horseradish cream. These entrees are served with a baked potato and corn on the cob. The desserts ($6 to $12) were impressive. Half are made on the premises; half come from Pastiche in Providence. The Lemon Mousse Cake was light as air and easy to devour even after a three-course meal. The Passion Fruit Coconut Cake, garnished with a bit of white chocolate, was just plain yummy. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

Mario and Cheryl Micheletti have swooped down into Greenwich Cove to lay claim to an abandoned waterfront restaurant. With the help of their daughters, Gabrielle and Allegra, they have opened Nautika Restaurant and Bar in the space formerly occupied by Hemenway’s Dockside Dining. Before that it was known as Table 28 for its location at 28 Water Street in East Greenwich. Previously it was the Blue Parrot and The Inn Between. Perhaps this family, with its successful restaurant experience, can keep this harbor restaurant afloat. The Michelettis are the former owners of the popular Tyler Point Grille in Barrington. We stopped by on a recent Wednesday night, and Nautika was living up to its website’s claims that this is the new local hotspot for waterfront dining and entertainment. Most of the indoor/outdoor tables were occupied, as well as the seats at the lively bar. Bon Jovi tunes played in the background, and the sporty wait staff, attired in khaki shorts and pale blue T-shirts, sang along to the songs. Live entertainment is offered most nights, usually starting around 8pm. The setting is spectacular, a milliondollar view of pleasure boats, both power and sail, along the docks of the

July FROM PREVIOUS PAGE July 9-10 Sure, you can see art just about anywhere, but there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of a proper museum to really make make you feel like what you’re viewing is worthwhile: the quietas-a-tomb atmosphere, forcing you to use some sort of bootlegged sign language in order to communicate with your companions; the strict temperature control of exactly 67 degrees, 15 percent humidity, that prevents warping, but only makes you feel sleepy; the stoic guards, who always make you want to touch something real quick, just to give them something to do. Um, shouldn’t art be fun? Luckily, for the past 49 years, it has been fun at the Wickford Art Festival, where an open air gallery welcomes the work of 250 artists from around the world, without any high-brow stipulations. 10amdusk. Summer Classica(al) July 20-31: You’ve been hitting a sour note while trying to deal with your annual summertime chamber music craving. Contrary to popular belief, the most effective remedy is not to drive three-plus hours to Tanglewood and drop $300 per night on a bed and breakfast. A better option? Take in the six concerts and two open rehearsals on tap during the underappreciated Kingston Chamber Music Festival. Go ahead and thank violinist David Kim for the change in plans. Back in the ‘80s, while you were trying to work on your best teenage pickup game, the now concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra was spending his adolescent hours envisioning South County as a prime location for a festival. So Entertaining | On Stage

By Molly Lederer

Last year’s performance of The Merchant of Venice

A Walk in the Park with the Bard Shakespeare takes the stage in Westerly In the wake of hailstorms and tornado watches this spring, The Tempest approaches Rhode Island this summer. No need to batten down the hatches, though. The Colonial Theatre of Westerly stages the Bard’s windswept play this month, as the 20th anniversary production of their outdoor Shakespeare Festival. With luck, any wild weather associated with the show will be plot-driven — the lightning a trick of lighting, and the only thunderous sound, applause. Harland Meltzer, the producing artistic director of the Colonial Theatre, grew up in Manhattan and loved attending the free Shakespeare in the Park series there. Upon founding the Colonial in ‘85, he recalls gazing through his office window at Wilcox Park and missing those Central Park shows. He resolved to create his own version and, six years later, kicked off Colonial’s Shakespeare Fest. Now a treasured tradition in South County and beyond, the Fest offers free performances to thousands each summer. For those who dislike Shakespeare or have trouble understanding his phrasing, take this opportunity to give this master playwright another go. Watching a professional production is a highly different experience from reading one of Shakespeare’s works in high school — especially when the show is free and outdoors, and you can pack a picnic. Meltzer notes, “It’s intelligible if it’s good,

if it’s well-performed, and if you’ve taken the time to look. These plays in general make wonderful literature, but they are meant to be performed and to be seen by audiences. That brings out, I think, a lot more of what’s in the text.” The Tempest takes place on a mysterious island, where a sorcerer named Prospero and his daughter Miranda live in relative isolation. Thrown from power and cast away from his native land years before, Prospero seizes a chance for revenge when his old enemies sail by. He creates a magical storm to wreck their ship and force them ashore for reckoning. Mischief, murderous schemes, and an unexpected romance follow. Meltzer directs, and hopes audiences will find the play transformative. It explores themes of vengeance, forgiveness, and redemption; it questions what it means to be human, to love a child, and to let go. The rich language of the script includes some of Shakespeare’s finest lines, like “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” The staging of The Tempest combines the natural terrain of Wilcox Park with set pieces. Expect an exciting, original score composed by Flav Martin, innovative lighting design by Brian Aldous, and Renaissance-inspired costumes from Joy Thibodeau and Tina Shea. The large cast features many pros familiar to

Colonial Theatre audiences, from Jimi Egan as the enslaved Caliban to Enrique Bravo as Miranda’s suitor, Ferdinand. David Birney, a veteran of stage and screen, stars as Prospero. A number of young Westerly residents play sailors, including elevenyear-old Dylan Temel, seen last summer as Michael Darling in Theatre by the Sea’s Peter Pan. The Colonial Theatre first produced The Tempest during the Shakespeare Festival of 1992. During that run, an actual squall on opening night added a surprise element of drama. It conveniently cleared up at the same point in the play that Shakespeare’s storm did, greatly impressing audiences. (Meltzer joked that he couldn’t take credit). Let’s hope for fair skies this season. Looks like the production itself will give audiences reason enough to hold onto their hats.

July 2011 | SO RHODEISLAND 83

So Approved

By Chelsea Sherman

You Say Potato Cookouts and barbeques are in full swing now, and you can’t have a party without the perfect side dish: potato salad. Everyone has their own secret way of making it, but we decided to try a few samples whipped up by some of the best delis in the area.

Roch’s Marketplace Roch’s wins our vote for the best traditional, barbeque-style potato salad. It was made with baby red potatoes cooked to the perfect consistency and was clean tasting. 1183 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 284-2900

Sandy’s Fine Food Emporium Phil’s Marketplace This non-traditional potato salad was made with string beans, garlic and other delicious ingredients. Made with an oil-based sauce, it was a refreshing break from the traditional mayo-based salad. 114 Granite Street, Westerly. 637-4885

84 SO RHODEISLAND | July 2011

“Sandy’s Own Potato & Egg Salad” was a mayonnaise-based salad that was rich and flavorful. We loved its hint of tangy mustard and eggy goodness. 15 Post Road, Westerly. 596-2004

West Bay Gourmet This salad is perfect for veggie lovers. Made with red potatoes, its fresh herbs, dill, scallions and bell peppers gave it a complex flavor profile. 889 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 789-9229
