SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2014

In 2010, North Kingstown native Stacey Place started her food blog Adventures in Rhode Island Dining (www. adventuresinRIdining.com). For the past three years, she has been chronicling restaurants throughout Rhode Island and beyond. Her writing career took off when she was the featured writer on a March 2011 episode of Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares. In addition to keeping up with her blog, she writes the Foodie Journal for So Rhode Island and also wrote this month’s food review. She is the full time band and music teacher at Metcalf Elementary School in ExeterWest Greenwich, and in her spare time she enjoys cooking, walking her rescued greyhound, traveling and spending time at East Matunuck Beach.

Eat Like a Local I’m about to brag, but you’re just going to have to indulge me. A couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of having drinks with Food Network megastar Alton Brown before his appearance at the Providence Performing Arts Center. We were talking about iconic Rhode Island foods – he was particularly taken with the Olneyville New York System wieners our associate editor Grace Lentini had taken him for earlier in the day – and the conversation came around to coffee milk. He was puzzled. “It’s like chocolate milk, but it’s coffee milk,” I explained to him. He countered: “But why do you drink it? Where did it come from?” And there I sat, totally

stunned that I had no idea about the origins of our state’s most iconic beverage. That conversation inspired this month’s cover story, The Rhode Island Food Encyclopedia. We all know that johnnycakes are the state’s traditional breakfast… but I’d be willing to bet most of us don’t know why it is. Read on to discover the origins of our mostloved, uniquely Rhode Island foods.

If there were ever a perfect time to visit Wickford, it is July 12 and 13, when artists and visitors from near and far will descend upon the quaint village for a weekend of art and music at the 52nd annual Wickford Art Festival. The free event, which is one of New England’s longest running, outdoor, fine arts festivals, is a staple of summertime, and for good reason. At festival time, this little town will host over 200 artists who flock here to exhibit and sell their wares. One can take in the beauty of the paintings and sculptures from the hydrangea-lined sidewalks or

roam the booths up close and meet the artists. The festival is known for its friendly atmosphere and creativity, live musicians add to the fun, and you can’t beat the sea breeze rolling in. If you need any more convincing, we happen to live in one of the best places to buy art: Rhode Island is tax-free on the sale of fine art, so get buying. And as Wickford Village is a short drive away from really anywhere in South County and beyond, there’s no reason to stay away. Free. July 12-13. Saturday, 10am-6pm; Sunday, 10am-5pm. www.wickfordart. org.–Audrey Falk

Secret Beaches Rhode Island’s

A handy itinerary for diversifying your beach game this summer

Photography: Grace Lentini

By John Taraborelli Rhode Island is so small and you’ve lived here so long. You’ve been to the state and town beaches, traveled to Block Island, taken a boat out on the bay, snuck onto a private beach or two. There’s not really anything left to explore. You’ve seen it all, right? Wrong. Quick quiz: Rhode Island has over 100 public and private beaches – how many have you been to? How many can you even name? Thought so. Several summers back, a friend and I set a guideline for ourselves: every time we went to the beach that year, we went to a different one. And for the most part, we chose beaches we had never visited before. We pulled up a list and got to work. This was in our beach bum days, and yet we still barely made a dent in that list – but along the way, we reminded ourselves how even in the smallest state, there’s so much we haven’t seen or done. That was the year I discovered Gooseberry Beach in Newport, which remains one of my favorites – and my own personal “secret beach.” “Secret beaches” are not “secret” in the literal sense – nothing in this state is remote or distant enough to be kept secret. They’re more like under-appreciated beaches, hidden in plan sight, indicated by signs that you barely even acknowledge as you breeze past them en route to your old favorite. They represent the vast majority on that list of 100 that you’ve barely even heard of, never mind visited. Your secret beach is the one that, when you suggest it, causes your friends to pause, scratch their heads, and shrug, “Sure, but you’re driving.” Here is a list of some “secret beaches” from both sides of the bay, and a little further out. Some are staff favorites, some are recommendations from fellow beach bums, and some were practically chosen out of a hat. Don’t even bother reading any of them: simply cover your eyes, point at one blindly, pack your beach bag, and hit the road.

South County If you love Charlestown Town Beach, but don’t love the crowds, then maybe Blue Shutters Town Beach is the one for you. Adjacent to East Beach in the Ninigret Conservation Area, Blue Shutters doesn’t boast much in the way of amenities, but it’s a nice wide, quiet stretch of sand where you’ll see lots of red Solo cups. Just be aware that the Charlestown Beach comparisons also extend to the quick drop-off at the shoreline and strong undertow. East Beach Rd., Charlestown. Pay to park, but no admission. Some beaches are made for that later-in-the-day trip. You know the one: you’re not out there to work on your tan, or perhaps even swim – it’s more about bringing a chair, packing a cooler, and enjoying the sound of the waves crashing while you take in the sunset. Narragansett’s Camp Cronin is one of those. Primarily billed as a fishing area, it’s also popular with bird watchers and boasts breathtaking views of Block Island Sound. Ocean Rd., Narragansett. No admission or parking fee. Although it’s a private beach with no public parking, Roy Carpenter’s Beach is easily accessible by parking at South Kingstown Town Beach in Matunuck and

walking the rest of the way. It feels more secluded than it really is and faces out onto open ocean, with Block Island visible in the distance. Again, it’s a private beach, so some rather imposing houses stand watch over the shoreline, looking like the kind of place where an alcoholic novelist would murder his family. Roy Carpenter Beach Rd., Matunuck. Perhaps the most difficult to access of all the beaches in Rhode Island, Westerly’s Sandy Point is actually on an island of the same name. Once an extension of Napatree Point (which also has a beach that could be considered “secret”), Sandy Point was separated from the mainland by the Hurricane of ’38. It’s mostly a nature preserve but does offer a public beach. Getting there requires not only a boat that doesn’t need a dock (the island doesn’t have one), but also purchasing a permit from nearby Stonington, CT, which claims ownership over five acres of the 35-acre island. Hidden at the end of Matunuck Beach Road, Deep Hole is more commonly known to fishermen and surfers than swimmers. However, given its exposure to the open waters of the Atlantic, it boasts good waves and strong winds, making it popular with surfers

and kiteboarders. Matunuck Beach Rd., Matunuck. No admission or parking fee. Though it is not technically a beach, the little stretch of beach next to the Ocean Mist is just enough to qualify. The bar will happily let you take your drink down onto the sand (provided you put it in a plastic cup) and, if you don’t mind the fact that it’s a bit rocky, you can easily take a quick dip before heading back upstairs to eat some fish tacos or dance to a blues band. Matunuck Beach Rd., Matunuck. Accessible only through the Ocean Mist. North Kingstown’s oddly named Calf Pasture Point Beach is one of the most pristine and deserted in the state. Nestled in the Quonset area, it’s accessible from the Davisville Bike Path and is more popular with wildlife than people. Lounging on its relatively empty sand is a great way to end a bike ride. Off the Davisville Bike Path, North Kingstown. No admission or parking fee. Though it’s mostly home to a private club, Quonochontaug (or “Quonnie”) Beach has a small lot for public parking, so get there early. It’s located on a narrow stretch of land between the salt pond of the same name and the Block Island Sound. It’s remote, but worth the effort. Sand Trail, Charlesown. No admission or parking fee.

the ISlandS

Lounging at Camp Cronin in Narragansett

Nestled in a quiet cove along Ocean Road on Aquidneck Island’s southern shore, Gooseberry Beach is open to the public but is also home to a private beach club. The relatively calm waters make it popular among families, and there is a large rock just a short swim from the shore that’s easily accessible and a great place to sunbathe. Ocean Rd., Newport. Pay to park, but no admission. Cast off as unwanted by the elites who summer at Newport’s toney and private Bailey’s Beach, Reject’s Beach isn’t even an official beach. It’s a small strip of beachfront that’s separated from its ritzy neighbor by a fence and a rope July 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

and enjoy one of Rhode Island’s – nay, the world’s – last great unspoiled places. Off Champlin Rd., Block Island. No admission or parking fee. Hidden away just above “the Neck” and the better known Crescent Beaches on Block Island, Mansion Beach provides big surf and small crowds. There is limited parking available near Searles Mansion, but it’s also accessible by bike. It’s also a short hike to the nearby Clayhead Trail. Mansion Rd., Block Island. No admission or parking fee.

eaSt Bay Little Compton’s Goosewing Beach is another one that requires parking at an adjacent beach (in this case, South Shore Beach) and walking the rest of the way. Narrow and a bit rocky, Goosewing occupies a narrow spit of land between open ocean and a coastal pond. The beach is actually a historic landmark and nature preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy, where they manage populations of rare birds. Off South Shore Rd., Little Compton. Pay to park at South Shore Beach, but no admission. If you’re looking for a great place to windsurf – and really, who isn’t? – Fogland Beach (aka Tiverton Town Beach) offers excellent conditions. Located on a small peninsula that juts out into the Sakonnet River between Tiverton and Aquidneck Island, it creates a small cove on its north side, great for nature lovers or families with children. It’s also got a nature conservation area. 3 Rod Way off Fogland Rd., Tiverton. Pay to park, but no admission. If your ideal beach day involves a picnic basket, then consider Warren Town Beach. It’s got shallow water that’s good for kids (as well as a playground) and is right next to Burr’s Hill Park, providing even more picnicking and recreational opportunities. Off Water St., Warren. No admission or parking fee. Almost more of a park than a beach, Union Street Beach is a tiny parcel of land just off the main drag in Downtown Bristol. There’s a grassy plot with benches and picnic tables leading down to a small area for swimming and sunbathing. Bring a cooler and watch the boats go by. Union Street, Bristol. No admission or parking fee.

that goes out into the water. There’s no parking, and it’s generally only accessible by foot or bike – just as it should be for us commoners. Off the Cliff Walk, Newport. No admission or parking fee. Jamestown is known for its quiet retreats and beautiful vistas, so it should be no surprise that Mackerel Cove Town Beach is a relatively tranquil spot that’s popular with families. Located on the “beaver tail” of land that gives Beavertail State Park its name, it’s light on amenities so you’ll want to bring plenty of snacks and things to entertain the kiddies. Beavertail Rd., Jamestown. Pay to park, but no admission. Occupying the same peninsula at the southeastern end of Aquidneck Island as Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, Middletown’s Third Beach (aka Navy Beach) is small and relatively quiet. The water is shallow and the waves are minimal, but the winds make it a popular choice for windsurfers. Pets are welcome after 5pm. Third Beach Rd., Middletown. Pay to park, but no admission. The other Sandy Point Beach is a shallow one facing out onto the Sakonnet from the eastern edge of Portsmouth. It’s relatively small and quiet, making it another good choice for families with children, or even just adults looking to set up shop with a chair and a good book. Sandy Point Ave., Portsmouth. Pay to park, but no admission. You’ll want to bring your friend to Teddy’s Beach in Portsmouth – your best friend. This is one of the few beaches in the state that’s known for being pet friendly, which for some will make up for the lack of amenities. Up near the northern tip of Aquidneck Island, on a curled finger of land that surrounds Blue Hill Cove, Teddy’s Beach is directly across the water from Tiverton’s Grinnell Beach, itself worthy of “secret beach” status. Park Ave., Portsmouth. No admission or parking fee. Perched out at the end of one of the two extensions of land that enclose Block Island’s Great Salt Pond, Charleston Beach is not easy to get to and offers no amenities. But in exchange for those inconveniences, it offers respite from the crowds and peaceful views of the boats entering New Harbor. Bring your own supplies

The Rhode Island

FOOD ENCYCLOPEDIA

A cultural history of our state’s favorite edibles By Elyena “Nellie” de Goguel • Photography by Stacey Doyle

The mysterious and delicious clam cake

I

f one is to believe in sentimental clichés, then home is where the heart is, and the fastest way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. 18th century French foodie Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin once expressed: “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” So what does our state’s trademark cuisine says about its people? The following is a list of iconic Rhode Island foods and where to find them. As far as stereotypes go, one could make the assumption that native Rhode Islanders are seafood and sausage loving citizens with a penchant for icy cold, sugary beverages who are fiercely family oriented and loyal to their (often Italian) heritage. A wicked fair assessment? You be the judge.

Rhode Island Chowder This clear broth version of the popular seafood soup originated in South County and is traditionally made with quahogs, broth, potatoes, onions and bacon. A lesser-known Rhode Island style chowder, which is similar to its Portuguese-originated “Manhattan” cousin and made with a red tomato broth, potatoes and clams, can also be found throughout the state. The most popular chowder – excuse me – chowdah, is still the creamy New England style. I suggest finding a place that serves a thick, hearty version because the thicker the chowdah, the better for clam cake dunking. Aunt Carrie’s, 1240 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 783-7930, www.auntcarriesri.com

Rhode Island Style Calamari Even though calamari is a nationally enjoyed appetizer, this fried squid dish is perhaps the best representation of who Rhode Islanders are. Consider this: according to a recent press release in favor of making the dish our official state appetizer, Rhode Island (Point Judith, specifically) “has annual landings worth $18.5 million per year… and accounts for 50% of all squid taken along the eastern seaboard.” Our version is also Italian-influenced and is served simply with hot peppers (banana peppers are traditional, but any hot pepper will do) and a little garlic. No frills, no marinara sauce – although cocktail sauce is sometimes allowed. While you can get the dish pretty much anywhere in the state, George’s of Galilee serves up a delicious version using fresh Point Judith squid. 250 Sand Hill Cove Road, Port of Galilee. 783-2306, www. georgesofgalilee.com

Del’s

Regardless of whether it’s guzzled by the sea or sipped outside their flagship location in Cranston, Del’s is the sweetest of all brain-freezeinducing concoctions. Great grandfather DeLucia first crafted his namesake beverage in Naples, Italy in 1840 from a mixture of summerripened lemons, winter snow preserved in caves via straw-insulation and sugar. Great grandfather’s son Franco then brought the popular recipe to America at the turn of the century, and Angelo, Franco’s son, perfected a mechanism that creates the consistently delicious product we consume today. 1260 Oaklawn Ave, Cranston and many locations throughout the state. 463-6190, www.dels.com.

Coffee Milk

Considering the fact that chocolate milk is enjoyed internationally, it seems strange that its coffee cousin is mainly associated with Rhode Island. We love it so much, it became our official state drink in 1993. The origins of this sweet caffeinated beverage are slightly vague, but some sources say that a version of the drink – a strong brewed, bitter coffee heavily sweetened and served with copious amounts of milk - was (and is) served in Italy. The recipe came to Rhode Island with the influx of Italian immigrants during the 19th century and eventually debuted in local diners in the 1920s. While Autocrat – once a family owned business based in Lincoln – is the name most associated with the actual coffee syrup, this year the company was bought by an English organization. Luckily, if you’re looking for a local alternative, Dave’s Coffee Syrup is made right in Charlestown. Dave’s Coffee. 5193 Old Post Rd, Charlestown. 322-0006, www.davescoffeestore.com

Awful Awful

Not quite a milkshake, definitely not a frappe, this creamy creation has delighted Rhode Island kids and adults for decades. When Newport Creamery opened its initial location in Middletown in 1940, they used this name for their drinkable ice cream treat, but it wasn’t until the ‘70s that they officially owned the “Awful Awful” brand. Whatever your flavor preference (vanilla, chocolate, coffee, mocha, strawberry, chocolate mint, cookies and cream), it’s going to be “awful big, awful good.” But hey, even if you don’t want something awful big, Newport Creamery’s Jr. sizes are still awful tasty. Multiple locations throughout the state. www.newportcreamery.com

Johnny Cakes The Johnny Cake legend dates back to Colonial times when Native Americans introduced Rhode Island’s early settlers to corn. According to Stephen Head, the owner of Jigger’s Diner in East Greenwich, settlers would take round corn-based cakes with them on long journeys because the edible items travelled well, hence their original name – Journey Cakes. Eventually the ‘r’ was dropped and these sweet-savory discs became known as Johnny Cakes. Kenyon’s Grist Mill, the oldest manufacturing business in Rhode Island, produces a white cornmeal used in Jiggers’ Johnny Cakes, and they do so the old fashioned way, using original granite millstones quarried from Westerly. 145 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-6060, www.jiggersdiner.com

Pizza Strips Church gatherings, birthday parties, school fairs - these doughy slabs slathered in tomato sauce are a staple at any Rhode Island social function. Like coffee milk, the exact history of the strips is a mystery; however, some sources believe they are an Americanized version of cudduruni – a Sicilian style pan-baked, thick focaccia bread topped with tomato sauce and herbs. The traditional preparation of the strip is simple – no cheese and no toppings other than sauce – but you can get tasty twists on the original at Colvitto’s Pizza & Bakery in Narragansett. 90 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 783-8086.

Olneyville NY System Wieners The name may be slightly confusing – if New York is in the title, then how can this be an icon of Rhode Island’s culinary scene? The reasoning behind it, though, is quite logical. The original owners of this infamous wiener joint – Nicholas Stavrianakos (Stevens) and his father Anthony – were Grecian immigrants who initially settled in Brooklyn. In the 1930s, the family moved to Olneyville in Providence, where they opened a small eatery serving hot wieners and a limited lunch menu. In 1953, the restaurant moved to its current location and has served these wieners – special meat sauce, celery salt, onions – the same way ever since. This year, the iconic spot won the prestigious James Beard America’s Classic award. 20 Plainfield Street, Providence. 621-9500, www.olneyvillenewyorksystem.com.

Clam Cakes If you’ve never sunk your teeth into a crispy ball of clam-stuffed dough, you’re missing a major part of Rhode Island culture. James Beard blogger and chef Hank Shaw said it best when he eloquently stated, “think clam beignet, or donut hole. Only savory. Crispy, golden brown on the outside, pillowy and light on the inside… Tiny chunks of clam nestle themselves in the folds of the pillow, offering surprising bites of chewy meatiness as you down one of these little glories after another.” Clam cakes have been part of a full “shore dinner” for decades, and these salty morsels of fried heaven are often served with New England or Rhode Island style chowder and are generally made with quahogs (Rhode Island’s state shellfish). Find perfectly prepared cakes at Champlin’s Seafood. 256 Great Island Road, Narragansett, 783-3152.

Soupy If you like your meat hard, thick and Italian, then soupy is the cured Sopressata sausage for you. Sopressata, or salami, can obviously be munched on all over the world, but the “soupy” sausage is specific to Westerly, where a majority of the population is descended from Cosenza, in Calabria, Italy. Many Westerly-ians make their own version of soupy, but if you are not an expert in the curing of meat, then try a 100% pork Dipollino’s “supri” Sopressata from Dipper’s Packing Company. 55 Ledward Avenue, Westerly. 596-3951, www.supri.com.

Reclaimed stone is highlighted throughout the Manchesters’ outdoor spaces

Sacred Grounds A Wakefield landscape architect turns the grounds around his from-scratch home into a living portfolio

Photography: Grace Lentini

For John and Sue Manchester, it’s what’s on the outside that counts. It only makes sense that the professional landscape architect and his family, including daughters Erica and Hallie, were drawn to an expansive piece of bucolic property carved off for residential development by a nursery to build their home. Stewart Nursery, a full scale retail and wholesale nursery in Wakefield that has served southern New England homeowners, landscapers and garden centers since 1933, grows trees, shrubs and plants. At the helm of Manchester Landscaping for decades, it’s no surprise that when an acre and a quarter of the nursery’s land became available, John jumped at the chance to build his family home here. A gargantuan pair of 15-foot rhododendrons John admits he was drawn to also proved a good omen for the

Manchesters. After all, he’s a member and past president of the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association. It was 1995 when they broke ground and John laughs that it’s been a “labor of love” ever since. The Manchesters say they were drawn to this area of South Kingstown because it was quiet enough for peaceful, secluded living but equally convenient to town. John took on the role of general contractor for the substantial building project which was to include three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, an open floor plan and wraparound porch, and would offer a combined 2,300 square feet of living space. “I’m cheap, so I want a lot of bang for my buck,” concedes John, “so the bedrooms are smaller and space is focused on the living areas.” He designed the farmhouse-style home and built various components

by hand, including the two-story floorto-ceiling stone fireplace and chimney and all of the tile work throughout the home, in addition to various other projects. But he’s also clear that he turned to professional local contractors for the bulk of the home’s labor including all of the carpentry work. “I wasn’t always swinging the hammer,” he jokes. Unlike the old saying, “The cobbler’s children have no shoes,” John has made the grounds surrounding of the family’s charming home a testament to his passion for landscape design. Describing his outdoor space as “different and unique” since it encompasses gardens, a variety of horticultural elements, hardscapes, softscapes and woodlands, John says the overall design scheme ironically breaks his single most important rule regarding landscape design: he didn’t have a plan. “I always tell my customers, ‘have

a plan before you stick a shovel in the ground.’ I broke that ground off the bat. A stone garage I built took two years of my spare time. From there I created a walk out because the property slopes so much,” he reveals. “Then I built a partition and gardens off of that. Several years after that, I decided I wanted another project, so I built another garage for my equipment and faced that one in stone. It kind of created the bones of a walled-in backyard, so I connected it all, adding a sunken walled-in courtyard.” It’s been an evolution of 15 years, but despite not listening to his own advice, it all comes together cohesively for an enviable outdoor paradise that leaves no guesswork that this is the handiwork of a professional. “It all happened organically,” says the Rhode Island Certified Horticulturalist, who adds that some components were planned ahead of July 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

45

time but certainly not as much as might be expected. “It probably took about 1,500-2,000 hours of my time,” he estimates. “Who plans something that will take up 2,000 hours of their time? But over 15 years, if you take a little at a time it’s not so bad, but I never planned on doing so much!” Do as I say, not as I do would likely be his advice to customers who aspire to have grounds like his own. “Plan it out. It doesn’t have to be a written plan, but know what you want to end up with before you start. It can be disheartening to start something and run out of steam,

46 SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2014

not making the finish line because you don’t know what the finish line is. It’s a lot easier to erase a pencil mark than move a plant.” When homeowners simply can’t wrap their head around a new hardscape, garden plan or landscape redesign, John welcomes them to see his property to get a better sense of the completed look and feel. “It’s a great way to show clients the different paving and stonework that I do,” he explains. “People can come to my house and look at a lot of things within the landscape as opposed to in a nursery or garden center. They can see how

they’re used. It points them in the right direction.” Looking to make your yard garden club worthy? Some common mistakes John sees are elements planted too closely together and too closely to the foundation of the home. Envision how the plant will be in its full maturity, then dig the holes. Another common error: planting things that create more maintenance than homeowners are prepared to undertake. “Keep it simple, stupid.’ That’s my motto. Minimal, simple, clean design is pleasing to the eye because most people want little or no maintenance,” says

John. No matter how good of a job he might do planning a landscape, if the homeowner isn’t going to properly care for the plantings, or hire someone who will, it’s a disservice to them both. Want to stand out? Look for lesser used plants and flowers. “There’s a lot of other stuff out there than hydrangea, forsythia and rhododendrons,” he adds. Variety, after all, is the spice of life.

Flipping for Flops Fashionable Rhode Island entrepreneurs wear their patriotism on their feet Donna Wilson and Maria Doherty are the creative duo behind Flippity Funwear, an accessory line of flip flops, bags and t-shirts celebrating summer fun and the 4th of July. The Rhode Island natives are cousins who call themselves sisters from a different mister. We talked about the patenting process, their design inspirations and thoughts about feet. Where did this flip flop idea come from? Maria: Five years ago I was working as an administrative assistant and was laid off. I called Donna who was home with her two small kids and said, “Do you want to start a business?” She immediately said, “Sure, come on over.” So I picked her up and off we went to Michael’s to get some ideas. Because I am a certified florist, I have that creative background so I thought we could we could design and make something. In the store we saw a display of decorated flip flops. We both looked at each other and said, “Let’s try that!” Donna: It is funny looking back because at the time we thought they looked so cute but then later on we said, “Oh my God, we’ve got to change how these are done.” So we started making a lot of prototypes before we discovered a way to decorate the flip flop that worked. We assemble our design on each flip flop by hand. How did you come up with the name Flippity Funwear? Maria: We began as Flippity Flop but then we wanted a name to incorporate our other products that we have added like our 4th of July t-shirts and bags. We wanted to keep fun in it because what we do is fun and we are fun people. What inspires the designs? Donna: My daughter Emma who is six has these funky clothes and colors. I think of her and I just start thinking of ideas to try with the flip flops. Maria: My whole environment, everything I see. For example, I saw the RI anchor, so this summer we have RI anchor flops. We have notebooks of ideas. Why did you undertake the step to

Owners of Flippity Funwear, Donna Wilson and Maria Doherty

patent your flip flops? Maria: After about two to three years in business we realized [as we were attending events] other vendors were trying to figure out how we were making the ribbons and how we applied them to the flops. We knew it was time – before we grew anymore – to protect the process we had invented. The patent process has been long, but the good news it that we recently got our patent and now we are ready to take our business to a new level. We have been the hometown girls. We now want to have Flippity Funwear become a home business for women across the country who want to earn extra money. What have you each learned since starting this journey? Maria: Just knowing that when you put your mind to something that you love you can accomplish anything. We each have families and have worked really hard; we have not taken any business loans and have put everything back into the company. We are growing our

business at our own pace. Donna: I never thought of myself as a creative person but I am! Where can I find Flippity Funwear? Maria: Word of mouth has been huge for us. Primarily we do home shows and take our boutique to home parties. We have literally met customers in parking lots and sold out of our trunks. We are also selling at New Beginnings Salon and Naturally Divine in Bristol. Now that our flops are patented we are at a point where we hope to hire a sales rep to move beyond the local market. What have you learned about feet? Maria: No two feet are the same size! Donna: Oh, they’re pretty! Especially with our flops on!

So Stylish | What’s in Store

By Cheryl L. Butler

Easy, Breezy Shopping Watch Hill’s got summer style

Photography: Tiffany Axtmann

Nothing says summer like strolling the waterfront shops in the delightful village of Watch Hill in Westerly. Always on the lookout for an unusual and effervescent spot to satisfy my shopping whimsy, I totally struck gold recently when I visited Coppola’s of Watch Hill. The exceptional seaside views at Coppola’s are definitely primo, but equally notable was the giant wow factor I felt when I stepped inside this trendy and fabulous boutique. I’m not one to shy away from color; just ask anyone who ever visited my first house that was boldly washed in turquoise, fuchsia and apple greens. Coppola’s immediately satisfied my passion for color with their thoughtfully arranged displays of eye pleasing, no-nonsense all occasion dresses, crisp summer slacks, yummy cotton totes and handbags and some of the most comfy-chic flats I’ve seen in ages. Manager Katie Lombard co-owns the store with her mother Jean Murano, who can be found close by as she is also co-owner of JC’s of Watch Hill. Together they have many years of retail experience as they sail into their third season at Coppola’s. There is definitely a nautical feel inside this bright and airy boutique mixed with an enjoyable combination of vibrant and neutral pieces lending to the store’s relaxed and playful vibe. I fell in love with the large assortment of great summer dresses that could be worn comfortably to the office or taken up a few notches with their glam assortment of accessories for an evening out on the town. Katie is bubbly and easygoing but doesn’t hover on the floor unless you would like her spot-on fashion advice. “Coppola’s has some very unique lines that no one else in the area carries. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, we can usually find it for you within a quick turnaround,” she says happily. I did notice the cool lines such as Julie Brown, Trina Turk, Melly M, Leota and Lucy Love because these collections looked just as stylish on as they did on the rack. Many of the fabrics were perfect travel pieces boasting a super soft feel that didn’t wrinkle. The lines all worked effortlessly together which made shopping for a few key pieces a breeze and you can’t beat

Coppola’s of Watch Hill co-owners Jean Murano and Kate Lombard

Coppola’s price tags. I was easily able to pair up some fabulous linen pants with a beachy-keen blouse, along with a cool summer skirt and a couple of key accessories for under $125! “Our goal is to have customers find one or two items for their wardrobe and then come back again. We’ve priced our collections to fit our everyday, local shopper’s budget, that’s why the lines we carry are so popular,” Katie shares. Now that I’ve found some sensational finds that I know will be my goto pieces in my summer wardrobe I head right over to the fun and sassy selection of Oka-B thong sandals and ballet flats. Some are adorned with trinkets and bling, the perfect way to show off those pretty pedicures while other styles are more low-key. And did I mention each pair comes with a two-year warranty? A mix and match line of fashion jewelry, scarves and wraps, cute summer hats and belts are also available and will complement your new outfit or take pieces from your existing wardrobe to the next level. Coppola’s also carries a fresh home goods line featuring beautiful placemats, striking trays, coasters and pretty dish towels. These are simple ways to freshen up your own décor, give the perfect hostess gift for those summer barbecues or to welcome the new family into your neighborhood. If you’re a lover of great bags, head to

Coppola’s right away because they carry the popular brand Big Buddha. These animal-friendly (vegan leather!), stylish bags work for women of all ages and won’t break the bank. They also happen to be popping up on the arms of Hollywood’s A-List peeps. And here’s some great news for those of you who would like to experience a Coppola’s shopping spree but might not be able to head to Watch Hill anytime soon. If you visit their website you can shop their merchandise online, year round. Katie has pulled out all the stops to make shopping easybreezy and extremely affordable and if you’re not exactly sure how to mix and match styles and color combos, no worries. She will gladly make recommendations that will fit your personality and your pocketbook. Summer’s here and the living is easy, so get yourself out to beautiful Watch Hill and see for yourself what all the fuss is about at Coppola’s. And hey, you never know, you just might bump into Taylor Swift when you’re shopping.

Ocean to Table Fresh Atlantic pan seared salmon served with honey infused jasmine rice and a mango, strawberry salsa

Is there anything better than a seafood dinner by the ocean on a warm summer night? Our reviewer visited the Pleasant View Inn in Misquamicut for a quintessential Rhode Island dining experience. July 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

So Delicious | Review

By Linda Beaulieu

Fresh from the Sea Oceanside dining in Misquamicut southern Rhode Islanders and tourists alike are drawn to the coastline. The Atlantic Ocean provides a magnificent reason to celebrate summer. Days are spent on the beaches swimming, picnicking and people watching. When evening falls, some beachgoers have a hard time driving back inland and often seek out the restaurants that inhabit the coast. If you find yourself in Westerly this summer, there is a hidden coastal gem you might want to check out: the Pleasant View Inn. Built in 1903, the Pleasant View Inn is located directly on Misquamicut Beach in Westerly and has hosted generations of vacationers. The hotel’s restaurant, known as The Kitchen, is open seasonally (this year until October 19). The restaurant is divided into four unique, separate spaces – the main dining room, the Upper Hatch Lounge, an outdoor seating area adjacent to the lounge and a function room. In the last ten years, the dining room has made a transition from a jacket-required formal atmosphere to a more casual, family-friendly setting. The views from the dining room provide sweeping panoramas of the ocean, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Block Island, Fishers Island and even Long Island.

Bouillabaisse

56 SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2014

This year, the Pleasant View Inn hired Joseph Taunton as its new executive chef. The menu is designed with an emphasis on fresh, local seafood and produce and includes a wide spectrum of tastes and prices – from an $8 mountain of nachos to a $28 bouillabaisse. The portions were quite generous, but the restaurant offers salads and several of the entrées as “small plates” which is perfect for those with smaller appetites. Our excellent waiter was quick to point out that everything, including the desserts, is made in-house (with the one exception of lobster ravioli from Providence’s Venda Ravioli). With such an extensive menu, that’s quite an accomplishment. In addition to the regular menu, Chef Taunton provides some tantalizing nightly specials. On the night we were there, there was an appetizer of Grilled Polenta Sliders with duck confit and pomegranate lime relish ($12) and an entrée special of Braised Boneless Short Rib with Taleggio cheese risotto and roasted baby vine ripe tomatoes ($26). On that gorgeous early summer night, the bar area and outdoor patio were very crowded with patrons enjoying the pub fare menu, and we were the first in the dining room. We started

Bacon-wrapped scallops with bourbon maple glaze

with cocktails and a few appetizers. My Bombay Sapphire Martini ($10) and my father’s Ketel One Martini ($10) were cocktail perfection. The best appetizer we tried was the PV

(Pleasant View) Little Necks ($12). The large soup bowl of flawlessly cooked fresh clams was sitting in a soupy broth of white wine and garlic butter with large chunks of Italian sausage and cannellini beans. The broth cried out for crusty bread to sop up its goodness. The Crab Cakes ($12), however, had more breading than crab, but were finished with a delightful citrus aioli. We also tried two “small plate” salads – Caprese ($5) and Roasted Beet and Spinach ($7) – and found everything to be fresh, tasty and the perfect size for one person. Sticking to the ocean theme, I ordered Pan Seared Scallops ($26) for my entrée. I enjoyed the scallops and the mushroom risotto that accompanied them. The Shrimp Linguini ($25) was served with what seemed to be a pound of linguini. Although the shrimp were cooked to perfection, I thought the sauce could have used a bit more flavor. The three small pieces of Baked Flounder ($25) were filled with a crab stuffing (very similar to what made up the Crab Cakes)

and sat atop a rich lobster sherry cream sauce. Wanting to sample what was called a “PV Classic,” my mother ordered a “small plate” of her favorite Chicken Francais ($16), which was light and eggy – a classic indeed. The flounder and chicken were served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccolini. My family is not known to eat light, so we forged ahead and ordered desserts. Since they were made inhouse, we really couldn’t pass them up. On the night we were there, the gelato flavors were Fig Mascarpone and Balsamic ($6) or Makers Manhattan ($6). I gobbled up my small bowl of Makers Manhattan. It was amazing, and the highlight of my meal. My mother loved her slice of Ricotta Cheesecake ($8) topped

with pineapple compote. At any time of the year, dinner with friends or family enjoyed with a perfectly made cocktail and a view of the ocean is a welcome addition to the end of a day. But in the summertime, it’s as good as it gets. So, before the season is over, grab your closest friends and family and head to the Pleasant View Inn. On a clear day, you might not be able to see forever, but you will see how good life can truly be.

Take a Bite In the kitchen with 1149’s executive chef Nicholas Dadona, Executive Chef at 1149 in East Greenwich, has some brag-worthy experience in the cooking department. The food artist has blessed a decent portion of Rhode Island with unforgettable flavors and textures since obtaining his degree in Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in 2005. Picking up the passion at age 17, Dadona, like many successful chefs, worked his way up to the top in many Rhode Island restaurants, starting as a line cook. With much dedication and years of hard work, he now holds title as executive chef. What’s your favorite dish on 1149’s current menu? The Pan Seared Filo Scallops with lemon-cider gastrique. Something new to 1149 is the fact that I’ve introduced a six-month rotating menu, where we cook more spring and summer, and fall and winter. We currently just rolled out a spring-summer menu. The scallops are really fresh and the plate has a lot of color. It’s good for the nice weather. Where do you get your inspiration for your seasonal specials? I actually have a really close relationship with some of the biggest produce vendors in the region, which, on a daily to weekly basis I am in touch with what’s fresh and what’s arriving. I’m creating a lot of my specials from ingredients that are provided and shown to me that day or throughout the week. Describe your process of creating a new dish. I think sometimes when you create a new dish, you look at a couple of ingredients and you start out with one or two fresh items – or something that you think is really cool – and you branch off from there. I put my own twist on things. Sometimes it can be classic dishes and sometimes I can just stumble upon a new way of doing something that turns out to be a hit in the dining room. Any examples of these dining room hits? Right now, we are on a Beef Wellington special. It’s not so much like a twisted classic – I am just redoing a classic. I made the Beef Wellington a little bit more like individual portion

58

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2014

Nicholas Dadona fires up the kitchen at 1149

sizes. Typically, it’s not an individual portion; it’s usually done in a big roast. The response that I got from that was really good. I actually have people coming back every month just for the Wellington. Growing up, where there any other chefs in the family? My grandmother was a really good cook. She would always have stews and gravies on the stove and her house always smelled like some form of veal or chicken. Growing up, I didn’t really learn how to; I kind of got thrown into the fire in the restaurant industry and learned from working. I started as a line cook, prep cook... That’s where I got all my experience. What invigorates you about the atmosphere of the kitchen? The kitchen is definitely not for everybody, and just the fact that I can handle the atmosphere that I know a lot of people can’t is empowering. It’s fast paced, and 90% of the time it’s extremely hot.

It’s a chaotic environment, but when you get into the zone and you’re pushing out a massive amount of tickets, the time flies by. And then it’s all over, and you’re like “wow.” I see on 1149’s menu that there is a Build Your Own Burger option. What’s your favorite way to dress up a good patty? I think that, most importantly, it starts with the burger itself. Whenever you’re building a burger, you have to have a good patty or a good meat mix. We use the American Kobe, so we start off with a good foundation. I’m a huge fan of barbecue, so if I was going to do something, I’d do some form of barbecue burger. I also like a fried egg. That’s one of my favorites, too.

Old School is New Again A fresh taste of classic Italian fare in Westerly

Photography: Ron Cowie

This summer, be sure to stop into Vetrano’s Restaurant in Westerly for a taste of old school Italian cooking. Vetrano’s has been serving up pizza and Italian specialties since 2002 and was recently renovated to add a room for private parties and a new bar space because chef and owner, Pasquale Illiano, wanted to give customers the “pleasure of sitting at a bar.” Pasquale was very hands on during the renovations and even painted the entire restaurant himself. Cooking was something the Naplesborn chef was meant to do. Even as a boy, as young as three years old, his family noticed his talent and passion for food. He loved helping his mother cook, and their specialties were eggplant parmigiana, tomato sauce, pasta e fagioli and rabbit cacciatore. Unfortunately, when he was only 13, his father passed away. He was suddenly the man of the house and got a full time job as a dishwasher in a Naples restaurant. It was hard to watch his friends having fun while he worked to provide for his family, but Pasquale used that time to study and master the craft of Italian cooking. He learned from some of the best chefs of Naples, studying their secrets and learning some of their recipes along the way. In 1995, he came to the United States and worked at a pizzeria in Long Island. A year later he moved to northern Virginia where he got his green card, worked with a friend to build restaurant-style pizzerias and studied English 12 hours a day. Chef Illiano’s mother passed away in 1997 and after a couple months of grieving in Naples, he came back to the United States more determined than ever to start a restaurant of his own. While working for a family friend in Ledyard, he knew on first sight that the old Newport Creamery location in Westerly was where he would open his first restaurant. Located right in the heart of the town with plenty of parking, Vetrano’s opened on Mother’s Day in 2002 and it soon became one of the hottest spots in town. Pasquale credits his wife Roxanne for helping him cope with the stress of ownership. Although pizza is only part of the story at Vetrano’s, it’s a very delicious part. Pasquale says what makes his pizza so good comes as much from

what’s in his DNA as the fresh ingredients he uses from local farms and shops. There’s more to his pizza than just flour, sauce and cheese. Every step of the process, from making the dough to making the sauce, takes time and love. He says making his pizza is “an art, but it has a lot of chemistry in it.” His Grandma’s Pizza is something even pizza connoisseurs can appreciate – a yeasty pan pizza crust topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato, EVOO and oregano. Made from a wide variety of toppings, you could go every day for a month and not have the same pizza twice. In addition to pizza, the restaurant serves old school, simple, authentic Italian cuisine. The eggplant parmigiana is a customer favorite and the meatballs are homemade from a recipe he brought to the United States from Italy. Every day the restaurant buys its seafood fresh from local sources for zuppa di pesce and fish specials. The new bar has been a welcome addition to the restaurant and customers have given it rave reviews. Chef Vetrano is currently developing a Bar Bites menu to include traditional bar favorites with a southern Italian twist. The cocktails give another reason to visit Vetrano’s new bar. They include a Mediterranean martini with basil and cucumber, an Italian margarita and a freshly brewed espresso martini. Stop in to Vetrano’s this summer to experience a bit of Naples in South County. After a day at the beach, when clamcakes and chowder don’t beckon

www.NickleCreekVineyard.com you anymore, grab a pizza and a martini and experience Chef Illiano’s version of an Italian Osteria in the heart of Westerly. You won’t regret it. 130 F Granite Street, Westerly, 348-5050, www.vetranosrestaurant.com Sweet Bites in East Greenwich There aren’t many things in life worth waiting eight months for, but Palmieri’s Bakery and Caffe’ opening on Main Street in East Greenwich is one of them. Originally set to open last September, the bakery (formerly the home of Symposium Books) spent the fall and dreary winter being transformed. A kitchen was installed, the retail space renovated and a cozy café space with eight small tables was created. Palmieri’s features a wide variety of pastries (including excellent cannoli, wine and pepper biscuits, fresh baked breads and a rather tasty bakery-style pizza). The kitchen creates made-to-order sandwiches and crepes (both sweet and savory). The coffee bar is brewing your favorite coffee drinks from cappuccino to café au lait to iced mocha for the hot summer afternoons. 247 Main Street, East Greenwich, 861-CAKE, www. palmierisbakery.com

Tara’s Tipperary Tavern Tara’s Tipperary Tavern is Rhode Island’s oldest Irish pub and is located in the seaside hamlet of Matunuck. The food – much like the atmosphere – mixes the best of Ireland’s pub culture with the seaside flavors of the Ocean State. Tara’s is where pub chips meet clam cakes, where your sandwich can contain clam strips or corned beef, and where you can sip on a Tullamore Dew or a ‘Gansett Tallboy. Tara’s is open for breakfast, serving a proper Irish fry-up with two eggs,

bangers (Irish sausage), rashers (Irish bacon), hash, baked beans, fried tomato, homefries and toast. (Breakfast is served Saturday and Sunday from May to September and Sunday only year-round.) Whether you’re looking for just a pint or a full meal, a hearty breakfast or a night of live Irish music, there’s always a reason to stop by Tara’s Tipperary Tavern. And you always can: it’s is open seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Insider Tip: Tara’s often hosts special dinners featuring guest chefs.

When Green Tea formed

14 years ago it’s founders, Jamie Conroy and Toby Kniffin had a simple, but ambitious idea. “Seven players were invited to participate and everyone was told to bring two songs in. The agreement right out of the chute was everybody would put their best effort into the other peoples’ songs,” explains Toby. “The model worked. For the first time in a long time we weren’t dealing with any conflicting agendas because we said forget it, we won’t have an agenda.” What Toby and Jamie wanted was to find a group of likeminded musicians who were committed to the idea of bettering themselves as performers and putting on a good show, regardless of the size of the room. On top of that, what has been key to Green Tea’s longevity is every member’s capacity for giving their all to everyone else’s material. “I could be one of those guy’s who’s like ‘No! We’re not playing my songs anymore, I’m not into this.’ But when I look out at the crowd and see when one of Marty’s songs is working, you don’t question that.” Seven cooks are a lot for one kitchen, but by establishing the ground rules from day one, Jamie and Toby positioned the band to be a grooving, selfsustaining organism. “After 14 years, despite the personnel changes, we’ve got some of the best people ever playing this music right now.” The current line up – consisting of Toby, Jamie, Amie Coffey, Mike Chicoria, Gino Maiorano, Marty Moroney and Jay Hartley – have been together for two years and their chemistry is easy to see when they’re up on stage. There’s camaraderie up there that’s been strengthened by years and countless gigs together. According to Jay Hartley, who joined as the band’s drummer three years ago, “There’s no ego. No one’s trying to be the shining star of the band at anytime ever. And it’s great. No one is stepping on anybody’s toes. We all enjoy what everybody is going to bring to whatever

The Green Tea Band

tune we play. We’ve rehearsed our music so much that we know exactly how to present it when we go out to the bar.” Though a jam band at its core, Green Tea knows when a Willie Nelson tune might work better than say a nebulous, freewheeling improvised jam. Toby and Jay both take pride in the band’s keen sixth sense for reading a room. Just as they feed off of one another they feed off the crowd, and after years of playing out they have mastered the art of making a live mix tape for whatever crowd they’re playing in front of. “How do you craft a catalogue? How do you maintain a regular list of songs?” Toby wonders. “Okay, we threw ‘Tumbling Dice’ in at Barley, it worked. At Strange Brew we were able to throw a 15-minute original that’s loaded with Phish or Zappa-like changes. It’s just constant refinement every week.” “We’ve made our sound with the seven people that we have,” adds Jay. “And these seven people have learned how to play with each other and off each other. There’s a connection up there. We might not be on every night, but we’re on with each other.” That connection and refinement is honed each week when the seven all get together for a three-hour rehearsal.

On top of that, Jay records those rehearsals, a fact he wears like a badge of honor, and between one week and the next those sessions are poured over. Which songs worked, which ones didn’t? Who’s doing what when and how can they do it better? “We’ve gotta be a crowd pleaser when we do our local hometown shows because there really isn’t a big jam scene down here,” says Jay. “But we’ve learned how to go into a room and say ‘okay, what do we have to do to make this room enjoy us?’ And fortunately we play some cover tunes very well and we definitely make them sound correct.” Having seen them at Malted Barley last month I can attest to their crowdpleasing prowess. A song and a half in and a bar full of people who had hardly seemed to notice the band loading in was fixated on the performance. Great tunes and good vibes poured out of their amps smoother than the beers on tap. Like seven benevolent pied pipers, Green Tea had snagged another bar.

SO RHODE ISLAND | July 2014

Karen Stackow takes woodburning to new heights Karen Stackow is a self-avowed “tree-hugger” and free spirit who can sit down for six hours a night, like clockwork, to work in her studio; an inspriational artist with a devilish streak; and a devoted mom and daughter who nonetheless is reveling in a new period of life when she can focus most of her time and energy on her artwork. A Rhode Islander since age nine, Karen grew up within hailing distance of Moonstone Beach, surrounded by trees and gardens, surf and sand. Naturally handy, she was blessed to have a father who “let me do what I wanted when I wanted,” which included working with power tools at a young age, fixing cars and helping to build houses. A degree in art and art history from URI didn’t lead to the career in art therapy she’d originally envisioned, but art remained a part of Karen’s life through phases that included the birth of her two daughters, owning a restaurant in Charlestown and more than two decades of tending bar at nearby Theater by the Sea. A job developing an arts integration program at the Kingston Hill Academy, a K-5 public charter school in Saunderstown, was richly rewarding, but ended when Karen had to take time off to care for her aging father. Somewhat out of the blue, a friend who had recently built a post-andbeam house asked Karen to create a sign with a family name on a leftover piece of cedar. Considering the project, Karen decided that painting the wood wouldn’t be satisfactory, so she decided to invest in a $20 solid-point burner (similar to a soldering iron) and

engrave it. From this modest beginning grew a passion for pyrography — literally, “writing with fire.” “I found I had such a need to burn,” she says with a laugh. “I was hooked from there on in, and started burning different stuff just for fun.” Using simple tools and mostly found materials, Karen designs everything from inexpensive wooden keychains and refrigerator magnets to garden signs, picture frames and wall plaques. Burned onto cedar, pine, cherry and occasionally mahogany or driftwood, her designs frequently include images of trees and leaves, suns and yoga symbols, boats and anchors, and phrases like “Be Nice” or the geographic coordinates of various locations in Rhode Island – the latter a favorite of sailors. Text is usually burned in Karen’s own unique, curlicue font and each piece is “signed” with the yoga symbol for fire. Karen balks at the term “folk art” to describe her creations, and says “crafts” doesn’t quite fit, either. “Some are crafty, some are works of art,” she decides. It all sounds very wholesome and earthy, but there’s more of an edge than you might expect to Karen’s work. One garden sign, for example, says “Psycho Path” (a group of therapists recently purchased several as inspirational gifts for clients); another new piece says “Calm Down” on one side, but “Bitch” on the other. “I’m looking forward to offending a few people and making everyone else laugh,” she says mischievously.

Just as when she was a child, Karen needs to be outdoors working or playing in the sun whenever possible, so she sets aside time in the winter and at night to work in her studio, which is currently being expanded in the garage attached to her home. With her daughters out of the house with work and school, she’s once again free to “do whatever I feel like.” And despite joking that nothing in her life seems to last more than seven years – “relationships or jobs” – Karen seems intent on pursuing her pyrography career for the long haul. “The hardest part of doing art is being disciplined, but I could do this all day,” she says while standing in her modest work space, surrounded by slices, chunks and slabs of wood awaiting the application of her heated touch. Self-taught at her craft, Karen’s next goal is to get more educated on dendrology (the study of trees) and how different types of wood burn. “I need to learn trees, work with more wood,” she says excitedly. “‘New’ is what keeps me engaged in anything.”

Beat the Heat with Iced Tea There’s nothing like a tall, refreshing glass of iced tea on a hot summer day. Lucky for you, there is a wide variety of teas to try across South County. We got to sippin’ on some unique concoctions that’ll certainly satisfy any tea lover.

Jitters Café This delicious yet mild Pomegranate iced tea reminded us of something incredibly natural and relaxing – like wildflowers and honey. Sweet and stimulating with or without its special sweetener, this drink will definitely keep you going on a hot afternoon. 530 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown, 295-9155, www.jitterscaferi.com.

Updike’s Newtowne Coffee “So refreshing,” a number of our staff members exhaled in unison. This dark, looseleaf Oolong “Wuyi” iced tea is one of the many varieties made fresh daily at Updike’s. Originating in China, it was rich and heavy, with a seductive smoky aroma and hints of licorice spice and chocolate. “It’s a perfect, well-balanced iced tea for summertime.” 7726 Post Road, North Kingstown, 295-5300, www.updikesnewtowne.com.

Cool Beans Café

Java Madness

“It’s the quintessential green tea,” was the consensus on this iced Organic Tropical Green Tea. Lemony, light and refreshing, this drink is a superb way to beat the summer heat. 18 Kingstown Road, Narragansett, 789-9500, www.coolbeanscaferi.com.

This tart Jamaica (Ja-MY-cah) iced tea definitely stood out from the rest. Its hints of lime and cranberry make for an excellent pick-me-up. As one of our staff members pointed out, “A little vodka would make for a delicious tropical Cosmo!” 134 Salt Pond Road, Wakefield. 788-0088, www.javamadness.com.
