It may be a dog’s life, but that’s definitely not a bad thing – especially for the pets whose owners read this issue. This year, our annual pet issue focuses on specialized animal services. We profile people with really unique pet-oriented jobs, from a holistic veterinarian to a judge for the Westminster Kennel Club to a couple who spends their retirement raising alpacas and making clothing out of their wool. If you’re less of an exotic pet person and more of a mydog-goes-everywhere-with-me one, we’ve got unusual pet excursions that are a lot more fun than a boring old walk through the park. And for the people whose pets simply must

have the best, we’ve also got the scoop on the poshest pet pampering, like puppy socialization classes and fruit-based facials for your feline friends. If you’re more of the I-don’t-dopet-hair type, there’s plenty more going on this month, from movies on the beach in Misquamicut to a gardening festival at East Farm, held by the URI Master Gardeners. The Rhode Island Film Festival brings Hollywood to the Ocean State this month – make sure to check out some of the hundreds of film screenings happening all over the state. Read on – it’s going to be a barking good time. - Julie

Thank you for your support of The Seasons fundraiser, “Sip, Savor and Celebrate a New Season,” held on June 18. Guests were treated to an evening that truly delighted the senses. Over 200 supporters and friends enjoyed food and wine pairings offered at themed stations. We deeply appreciate your donation of a gift basket containing $500 in restaurant gift certificates. Whether you donation was used for the live auction, silent auction or gift certificates places in our wine bags, every gift was important to our success. You will be very pleased to hear that our net proceeds from the first annual event totaled over $25,000, which will be used to enhance The Seasons Fund – a resource used to improve the quality of life for our residents. Again, thank you and we

hope we can count on your support again in 2011! Sincerely, J.Chris Woulde & Nancy Musso The Seasons East Greenwich

Happy Trails My husband and I come up from New York each and every year to summer in Matunuck, and the first thing we look for when we get here is always the latest copy of SO Rhode Island. I can’t tell you what an indispensable guide it’s been to your charming Ocean State. Last month’s cover story (“SO Ready for Summer,” July 2010) was an absolute must-read for folks like us, who are always looking for a wonderful day-trip. Thanks again for keeping us in the know! A Tradition that Keeps Growing Every two years, the URI Master Gardeners hold an open house at their Demonstration Vegetable Garden at East Farm in Kingston, and this year’s event on Saturday, August 14 will have a few new features for the visiting public. The free event lasts only four hours but it will be packed with cooking demonstrations, garden tours, informational presentations and children’s activities. The 5,000-square foot garden has been redesigned for 2010 to provide more fresh food for the RI Community Food Bank and other area charities. The Master Gardeners use the garden to try out new techniques and as an educational tool for visitors interested in growing vegetables. New this year is a children’s garden themed after The Wizard of Oz, complete with miniature characters including the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. This section will be the site of a scavenger hunt for visiting children. For the grown ups, there will be short, informal talks on tomatoes, drip irrigation, container gardening, growing and using herbs, composting, soil and good agricultural practices. Other new features this year will be growing tomatoes using string trellises instead of cages, how to make and use a square-foot garden (great for older folks

who cannot bend down easily anymore) and vertical gardening to save space. An Ask-A-Master Gardener kiosk will be manned by people who can answer questions, and once again free pH soil testing will be offered. (Just bring a cup of soil from your garden or lawn – take samples from about 10 different spots and place them in a plastic baggie.) Four cooking demonstrations involving two professionals and three amateurs will be held. The professionals are Normand Leclair, cookbook author and founder of the Red Rooster Tavern and Brandon Read, owner of the Celestial Café in Exeter. The amateurs are Paul and Master Gardener Linda Muffoletto, who will team up to do an Italian offering, and Chandu Dondeti, webmaster for URI and native of India, who will do an Indian dish. East Farm will be a bit more crowded this year because the South Kingstown Farmer’s Market is there on Saturday mornings; visitors to the open house can visit the market as well. Stop by for a day of fresh fun. The rain-or-shine event will run from 10am-2pm. The farmer’s market runs from 8am-noon. East Farm is located off Route 108. It is a half-mile south of the main traffic light in Kingston. www.urimga.org -Rudi Hempe

Every Tuesday evening this month, when the sun starts to dip below the horizon and the sunburned beachgoers have long packed up their umbrellas and coolers, Atlantic Beach Park will welcome a different crowd of beach bums for the evening. The family-friendly stretch of shore, located in Misquamicut, will hold outdoor movie events on August 3, 10, and 17. Movies are family-oriented, both admission and parking are free, and concessions will be for sale. Round up the family and head to the beach by sundown for a fun, low-key night. Cross your fingers that the rain holds off; if the movie is cancelled due to weather, there is no rain date. Family Fun By the Sea Take a break from the sun and saltwater, at least for a couple of hours, and bring your family to Theatre By The Sea’s Children’s Festival. Fridays from 10am-noon, Theatre By The Sea in Matunuck will offer performances for both children and parents to enjoy – and afterward we promise you can get back to building sandcastles at the nearby beaches. Laugh, play and sing along with a range of different shows that are sure to entertain and amaze. Performances will take place inside on the main theatre stage while refreshments are available for purchase in the beautiful outdoor garden before and after each show. This is a chance to introduce your children to live theatre in a fun environment that’s geared toward them, and to also appreciate the historic stock barn theatre that hosts each show. The Festival will feature performances by Squeaky Clean and Keith Michael Johnson, who delves into The Secret World of Bubbles. Single tickets are $10 and a package of three or more shows is only $8 per ticket. For a full schedule of performances and to purchase tickets go to www.theatrebythesea.com. 364 Cards Pond Road, Matunuck. 782-8587. –Julie Sickel

In his 16th book (nearly all of them about Rhode Island) former US Navy civil serviceman Richard Simpson again delves into the Ocean State’s relationship with the America’s Cup. America’s Cup: Trials & Triumphs trails the history of the world’s greatest yachting race, from the 1857 deeding of the Cup to the New York Yacht Club by the owners of the ship America, to the historic 1992 addition of a new, 75-foot, high-tech class of yachts developed specifically for the race. Simpson breaks up what might otherwise be dry historical recitation with beautiful photographs and illustrations, giving the reader insight into the construction of these vessels, and a real sense of the majesty with which they slice through the waves. This is more than a history of men; it is a history of gleaming wood, snapping sails, ocean swells and rushing winds. And if you think you don’t know enough about yachting to really get it all, don’t worry. Simpson provides a handy glossary, and explains sailing terms and techniques, as well as America’s Cup strategy, such that even a rank beginner will become an initiate by the end of the book. We’d like to take a minute to bid a fond farewell to Jerry Meyer, who stepped down as the head of the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and into retirement earlier this summer. Since our launch three years ago, Jerry has been a great friend to the magazine, not only in his duties at the Chamber, but also as a sometimes photographer and as someone who was always willing to help out in a pinch. Most of all, he’s just a really nice guy. From everyone at SO, we wish him the best retirement possible. Thanks for everything, Jerry. –Julie Tremaine

Grassroots nonprofit Families First Rhode Island is looking for volunteers to help mentor mothers in southern Rhode Island. If you’re a mom who’s “been there,” consider the advice and support you could give to mothers struggling with pregnancy, caring for a child, or postpartum depression. An hour a week is all the time required of volunteers, and doesn’t involve babysitting, cooking or household chores – just a warm and supportive attitude for a mother in need. Training is conducted over four weeks at 325 Columbia Street in Wakefield. 383-9933; www.familiesfirstri.org. –Meagan Gann

For Here or To Go? Expert iced coffee tips for the aspiring home barista By Bob Cipriano | Illustrations by Karli Hendrickson

H

ow do you make your iced coffee? Do you brew a pot at breakfast and pour what’s left over into plastic, then stash it in the refrigerator? Then what? Drink some, add to it from the next pot, then repeat the process until the day after Labor Day? You’d better read on: there are more elegant ways, both on the road and at home. Consider a few of South County’s finer coffee emporiums. They all start with premium beans. (Nobody is saying you don’t start with premium beans, but still….) Anyway, after the premium beans comes the brewing. Remember: making iced coffee is the objective, not an afterthought. At the Bagelz shops in Wakefield and Wickford, they brew a fresh batch, fill up gallon jugs with the brew and chill it overnight. But, as Ian from the Wickford shop on West Main

Street points out, “Let the coffee cool down at room temperature or outside before refrigerating.” Apparently you can run into mold if you expose brewed coffee to radical shifts in temperature. 21 West Main Street, Wickford. 294-6366; www.bagelzri.com. Okay. Coffee brewed to be iced. Check. Gradual temperature change. Check. Next: rotation. Tori, who manages the Wakefield shop on Pershing Avenue, points out, “We never put new coffee on top of old.” If you turn your thoughtful gaze to the left from your perch at the counter, you can see the iced coffee tanks; they’ve got numbers on them. When Number One is drained, Number Two goes in. As the day wears on, requiring more fuel, more coffee gets brewed, cooled, chilled and added to the rotation. 90 Pershing Avenue, Wakefield. 783-9700; www.bagelzri. com. Travel down to Perks & Corks on

High Street in Westerly, where their java is perked strong and hot and corked up overnight in an enormous jug. Once that jug hits the floor, it serves customers that day and never goes back. Next day: new jug. 48 High Street, Westerly. 596-1260; www.perksandcorks.com. Consider the wonderful Sophie’s on Route 2 in Exeter, with its wide expanse of seating and clusters of fresh baked goods behind the glass at the counter. One recent Sunday, the weekend crew (Stephanie, Olivia and Caitlyn) made special note of the fact they brew several pots of their exotic coffees and pour them directly into their specifically labeled containers. They cool naturally there, iced only when the time comes to actually put it in your cup. And, if you want cream and sugar with that cup, they transfer your coffee to a stainless steel container, add the cream and sugar and

shake it up (not half-heartedly stir it up, or dump the fixings and allow you to fend for yourself, like you get from some thoughtless servers at chains that will go unmentioned). 699 South County Trail, Exeter. 667-0603. When pressed about home recipes, the concept of “cold brewing” comes up among coffee aficionados. Tori from Baglez revises the traditional brew at home by making it extra strong in anticipation of the icing. She “ices down” her home brew by draining it over ice to prevent any hint of watering-down. That notion of watering down or diluting is such a major issue with iced coffee that some coffee connoisseurs insist on cold brewing. At the legendary Taylor’s Landing Country Store on Kingstown Road in West Kingston, cold brewing actually occurs – but not all the time, and not on any set schedule. (The process can be complex when brewing in bulk.)

Kayla, who works there and knows a thing or two about coffee, emphasizes how “really, really good” their coffee is. “We’re constantly roasting it,” she says. When time permits, Taylor’s strains coffee through cold water for a couple of hours – no heat. The mix sits overnight. Then it gets thoroughly strained again into a new container, then chilled again before it’s finally ready to be served. Those who savor the mix say you get the true flavor of the coffee this way, with far less oil and acid. (You’ll see a sign at the shop when the cold-brewed mix is available.) 3362 Kingstown Road, West Kingston. 284-0506. Let’s break down this process and take it home. It’s important to note that the process dissolves only certain elements of the coffee. The amount of flavor and caffeine content that comes through is subject to debate. Some say 90% of the flavor, with only about 15% of the oils and acids. Some love that ratio, discovering flavor previously masked by those oils and acids. Some find it weak. The flavor in a given coffee may be up to twice as strong, while the overall brew will have far less bite and acidity. Here’s how to try it at home, so you can decide for yourself. So many iced coffee alternatives, so little summertime. SO

The recipe: 1. Measure 1/4 to 1/3 cup (5-6 tablespoons) of coffee into the Mason jar or glass. Add about a cup and a half of room-temperature water. You should have a ratio of about 4:1 water to coffee. Stir the mixture until it is even and there are no lumps. 2. Put some sort of lid on the container. Let it sit a minimum of 3 hours. It can sit overnight, up to 12 hours, if you like. 3. When ready, pour the mixture through the stainless steel strainer into the second container. Rinse the first container of any leftover grounds. Then pour the coffee back from the second container into the first through fine mesh or cheesecloth. This removes the fine grounds. 4. Pour the final mixture into your storage container and put it in the refrigerator. 5. This mixture can be 2 or 3 times stronger than you want to drink it. Dilute with an equal amount of water to start. 6. Serve over ice. If the mixture is too strong, add more water to dilute. Add cream and sugar only when you’re ready to drink it. (But remember the lesson from Sophie’s: shake that mix – don’t just stir it!)

All Warm and Fuzzy Jay & Jan Hannah raise furry friends

E

ight years ago, when Jan Hannah saw a picture of an alpaca on the back of a magazine, neither she nor her husband Jay predicted that they would turn the curious South American animal into a business endeavor. On a bit of an impulse, looking for something to do together in retirement, the couple purchased three alpacas, thinking they might breed the animals on their Ashaway farm. After realizing the time and expense the breeding process would require, the Hannahs decided to incorporate Jan’s love of knitting. “Whenever

Jan went to buy a mitten somewhere it was never quite what she wanted. So, she made a mitten from our alpaca fleece, and all of a sudden we started producing apparel,” recalls Jay. Alpaca fleece, according to Jay, “is softer than cashmere, and warmer than wool. It’s some of the finest fleece in the world.” With their herd now numbering 17, the Hannahs use the fleece of their own animals to produce fine products and apparel. Jan’s love of knitting has evolved into a growing business, as she produces scarves, jackets, hats, mit-

tens, shawls and other winter wear from her three looms. The Hannahs are particular in choosing the alpacas they purchase. For several years, whenever they traveled, they would visit an alpaca farm. Based on age, the show background of the animals, and the softness and length of the fleece, the couple began to add to their herd. Much of the Hannahs’ business comes from bringing their products to farmers’ markets, mostly in the Richmond-CharlestonHopkinton area. With the attention this brings, and the viral ability of word-of-mouth, the couple has found

demand for their products far and wide, having received orders everywhere from Hawaii to England. The appeal of the apparel is in the quality of the fleece, says Jay, and that it is humanely produced and naturally woven and dyed. “It’s amazing to me how many people do not even know what an alpaca is,” laughs Jay. It’s safe to say that it is a good thing the Hannahs realized the importance of the friendly animals: Now they and their alpacas’ fleeces can keep you warm and cozy in the biting cold of New England winters. www.hannahsfarmalpacas.com

Naturally Healthy

Dr. Elizabeth Hassinger is a holistic pet health practitioner

I

n a world where going green, eating smart, and living well are used many times a day in casual conversation, holistic health treatments are more and more visible on the average person’s radar. One such individual, Dr. Elizabeth Hassinger, a graduate of Tufts Veterinary School, has taken her belief in a natural, holistic approach to medical treatment for her own family and applied it to her work with animals. Her belief that animals should be given the same attention and quality of care as human patients, along with her advocacy of a healthy, natural lifestyle, led to the creation of the Wolf Rock Animal Health Center in Exeter. When Dr. Hassinger started her family, she was careful not to expose herself or her children to toxins, paying close attention to the kinds of foods they ate,

28 SO RHODEISLAND | August 2010

the medications they took, the products they used. “All of a sudden,” says Hassinger, “I realized if that’s the way I felt about my children, then why wasn’t I doing that for my own patients, the animals I take care of?” With that in mind, Dr. Hassinger began to look into options for treating sick and injured animals differently, coming across a growing field of holistic treatments. With certifications in animal chiropractic and acupuncture, and studies in homeopathy, herbal medicine and other alternative treatments added to her traditional veterinary training, Dr. Hassinger decided to open her holistic animal hospital in 1997. Along with the traditional medicine, surgery and preventative health services other modern veterinaries provide, Dr. Hassinger and the other Wolf Rock Animal Health veterinarians provide al-

ternative care to their patients. These methods include acupuncture, animal chiropractic, the herbal medicine treatments involved in homeopathy, and nutritional consultation. “We take an overall holistic approach to caring for our patients. These alternative treatments allow us to use gentle, effective methods of keeping pets in good health,” says Dr. Hassinger. The combination of modern medicine with alternative methods that have been vastly improved and adapted for practice on animals in recent years allows the Wolf Rock team to care for all aspects of their patients’ health. “It is far more gratifying to me, as a vet, to treat our patients with this holistic approach,” says Hassinger. “The kind of clients who want our care are people who really care about their animals. We are working

with really good people who want the best for their pets, and it is truly amazing to see the results.” Not only do the Wolf Rock vets care about the animals, but they also take the time to get to know the patients and the families, providing individualized treatment. “We really get in touch with our patients and families, spending a lot of time with them and really getting to know them so that we can better care for them,” says Hassinger. “Our concern is with giving animals quality care in the most non-invasive and non-toxic way possible.” What with her holistic approach to health and her dedication to providing individualized care and attention to patients and the families, Dr. Hassinger truly does live by her beliefs. www.wolfrockanimals.com

Leader of the Pack

Brian Manning is Rhode Island’s dog whisperer

I

t has been said that the best way to learn is by example. Brian Manning, lead trainer and owner of Canine Behavioral Services, knows this better than most. With a pack of reliable, capable dogs by his side, Manning uses his experience working with dogs at a humane society out of Boston and his unique understanding of animal behavior to teach unruly pets to cooperate within a family dynamic. “We are unique in what we do here,” says Manning of his pet-training service. “I don’t know of any other trainers in New England that utilize the services of dogs to train other dogs, and yet there is no more effective way to help dogs work though these severe behavioral disorders.”

The dog owners who come to Manning for help are oftentimes desperate to find a way to calm their aggressive reactions and make their dogs behave. This is where Manning’s unique methods come in. Manning’s primary technique is what he calls the “pack behavior method,” in which the “problem” pet is integrated with the group of dogs living and working at the Canine Behavioral Services farm in Westerly. This method, which puts the troubled dog into Manning’s rehabilitative pack, changes behavior by example. “Dogs learn through association,” says Manning. “My pack helps the troubled dog in need by communicating with him, not backing down to his aggression

but at the same time not trying to instigate it.” The goal of the 30 to 45 day in-patient behavior rehabilitation program is not to tell the dogs what to do, as with most obedience training, but to work through the irrational fears instigating the dog’s aggression and teach them how to be less reactive. “What I try to do, in collaboration with the pack, is to try to hamper the aggressive reactions the dog has. We want to get to the point where the dog naturally reacts in a submissive way, as opposed to having an excitatory response,” he says. With the motto “Therapy for Dogs. Training for People,” Manning also teaches the pet owners to better work

with their dog. As he explains it, “The leader-follower bond between humans and their dogs needs to be established for the behavior to really change. I work with owners to teach them to be calm, confident ‘pack leaders’ when dealing with their pet.” As many previous clients attest, Manning’s methods achieve long-term success in producing a behavioral balance in the troubled dog. With an extensive list of success stories and his pack of calm, responsive dogs by his side, Brian Manning has proven that his Canine Behavioral services not only trains dogs, but teaches pet and owner how to reach long-term cooperation. www.k9behavioralservices.com

Best in Show

Dr. Robert Indeglia judges the biggest breeders’ events

S

omewhere in between performing intricate cardiovascular surgeries, caring for patients, and juggling everyday life, Dr. Robert Indeglia has established a long-term hobby in breeding and judging show dogs. A true New Englander, born and raised, Dr. Indeglia now serves as emeritus at the Miriam Hospital, resides in Narragansett, and travels regularly throughout the country judging dog shows. As a child, Dr. Indeglia was constantly around show dogs. His father, also a doctor, sparked the interest in breeding with his litters of field cocker spaniels. After medical school, as an intern out in Minnesota, Dr. Indeglia began to develop a greater interest in breeding dogs for show. He bought his first Nor-

30 SO RHODEISLAND | August 2010

wegian elkhound, a dog he describes as “a hearty hunting dog, almost like a small husky” in 1961, after which Dr. Indeglia began actively breeding these hounds. “All of the sudden I myself became very active in the breed. The first Norwegian I bought happened to be a very good one, and so I started breeding show dogs,” says Dr. Indeglia. The transition from show dog breeder to judge came in 1971. Coupled with his propensity for producing winning show dogs, Dr. Indeglia’s keen eye for what makes a dog a champion put him at the forefront of dog show judging, quickly making his way through the different categories. The pinnacle of his judging career, says Indeglia, came in 2007 when he judged Best in Show

for the Westminster Kennel Club, a show that in its 134 years has come to be considered the “greatest dog show in the world.” For Indeglia, this was not just another judging stint, but a great honor and source of pride after dedicating so much of his life to show dogs. Now, nearly 40 years after the head of the American Kennel Club judging system encouraged Dr. Indeglia to apply to be a judge, much of the doctor’s time is taken up by the sport. He spends nearly half of the weekends in the year traveling to different states to judge some of the best dog shows, and considers himself a veteran of the dog show track. Even after all these years, Dr. Indeglia speaks fondly of his work in breeding and judging. Explaining

the fine line that dog show judges run, Dr. Indeglia says, “It is somewhat of a subjective decision, as you are judging each dog against ‘the standard.’ When you as a judge read a standard, you emphasize some parts of the standard more than someone else would. The most important thing is that I am confident in my decisions.” Looking forward to this summer’s Westminster Kennel Club show, in which he will judge the Hound Group, Dr. Indeglia says that he sees no end in sight for his judging career. “I have the honor of judging the biggest shows in the country now, both the groups and the overall Best in Show awards,” says Dr. Indeglia. “I still very much enjoy these shows.” SO

Ice cold water, organic peanut butter dog bagels, vanilla kisses and even grain-free cookies for dogs with allergies (or who are just looking to cut carbs out of their diets) make Chianti’s Parkside Cafe the perfect place for your buddy to relax with utmost confidence that he’s eating every bit as well as his humans. The proximity of Goddard Park also ensures that conscientious owners don’t have to go out of their way to help their pets – not to mention themselves – work off those calories after a big dinner. “Come in a happy mood,” says Jaye McElroy of Bone Appetit. “It’s a great place to take your dog and not have to worry about people looking at you funny.”

Dog-Friendly Decks Where: Tricia’s Tropi-Grille, 14 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown; Jim’s Dock, 1175 Succotash Road, Jerusalem When: Lunch and dinner every day, plus breakfast at Jim’s More Info: www.triciastropigrille.com; www.jims-dock.com Tricia’s has more than 60 seats on their outdoor patio, as well as a dog-friendly Tiki Bar (well, it’s more like humans-with-dogs-friendly, seeing as they don’t serve booze to the dogs), where you’ll find as many as ten canine customers on a Sunday afternoon. Many of their furrier guests come by sea, arriving at the Jamestown Marina down the street, and in keeping with that theme, Tricia offers them “surf dog” water bowls and treats. They also have leashes, in case you forgot yours. Jim’s Dock boasts some of the best fried seafood in South County, and a gorgeous deck where owners can have a leisurely lunch with their pets and take in the view. Dogs can even take a dip from a small beach right off the dock, though of course that’s an activity best saved for after the meal. They also offer water and treats for dogs, but really, you’re going to have to share some of those fried scallops if you want to maintain good relations with your pup.

Canine Kayaking Adventures Where: The Kayak Centre of Rhode Island, 9 Phillips Street, Wickford; also 562 Charlestown Beach Road, Charlestown When: Daily More Info: www.kayakcentre.com The Kayak Centre doesn’t just allow you to take your pet for a paddling adventure, they strongly encourage it. They’ll consult with you on a boat that’s suitable for the size of your dog, and help you fit him for a life vest at their flagship store. You don’t need any experience with kayaks, and they’ll give you basic instructions on how to get around safely – as well as directions from their Wickford location to Rabbit Island, where you can recharge and let your buddy loose for a run. Rentals range from $25 for a couple of hours to $70 for a double kayak all day, but the experience of sharing a real adventure with your dog is priceless.

Gimme Shelter Life’s a Beach Where: RI State Beaches, including Narragansett, Watch Hill, and Matunuck When: After September 30 More Info: www.riparks.com Okay, the RI beaches aren’t the most dog friendly places in the state, but they’ll allow your pet as long as you keep him leashed and promise to clean up his poo. Narragansett beach is ridiculously scenic, with a great view of The Towers and the sea wall. It’s also clean and wide, with some nice hard surf for those of you with retrievers that need to get some solid exercise before the cold weather sets in. Matunuck beach boasts ample parking and is less crowded than Narragansett, making it a great place to let your dog stretch his legs (though don’t tell them I told you to let him off the leash!) without worrying too much about other beachgoers. Again, it has some gnarly surf, being mostly exposed to waves from deep in the Atlantic, so make sure your dog is a powerful swimmer before letting him have at it. Watch Hill beach is on a peninsula almost entirely surrounded by water, making it perhaps the most scenic of RI beaches, at least for the humans involved. The town itself has loads of amenities and sights to see, even off-season. It’s a great choice if your dog (like mine, who hates the water) isn’t so much into swimming, but doesn’t mind a long car ride and a pleasant trot through the sand.

Get Back to Nature Where: Arcadia Management Area, 260 Arcadia Rd, Exeter When: 5am to sunset (but with overnight options and night fishing) More Info: www.riparks.com/arcadia.htm At 14,000 acres, Arcadia is the state’s biggest recreational area, so you can steal your pup away from civilization and let him truly experience the wilderness from whence his ancestors came. There are miles of gravel roads (sometimes used by cyclists and even equestrians, so watch out) as well as countless trails through the woods. There is a lake for fishing (permit required), campsites for backpackers (free, but permit required), and you can even rent a shelter for $15/night. Arcadia is a picturesque park and has diverse activities for both experienced and inexperienced outdoorsmen. Be careful, of course, when taking your dog, and fluorescent orange vests are required during hunting season. Grab a trail map from the Arcadia Management Area Forest Environment Headquarters and introduce your dog as early as possible to the sights and scents of the (semi) wild. SO

One South County institution helps the animals who have nowhere else to go Have you ever wondered where to bring an injured or orphaned wild animal within our tiny state? The Wildlife Rehabilitation Association of Rhode Island – the only licensed wildlife association and clinic in Rhode Island – offers a unique kind of animal aid. Since 1993, WRARI has been working to rehabilitate and provide medical care to wild animals all over the state. Executive Director Kristin Fletcher presents the clinic as a “clearing house.” She says, “If an animal can’t be brought to a rehabilitator, animals go through our clinic and are then brought to the proper rehabilitation center depending on the animal.” Sick, hurt, abandoned, it doesn’t matter. The Wildlife Clinic fosters all species of animals found in Rhode Island, in the hope of releasing healthy animals back into the wild. Interestingly enough, the only species raised at the clinic is white tailed deer. The Wildlife Clinic is the only facility in Rhode Island legally permitted to handle the rare species. WRARI is a non profit organization comprised of volunteers, veterinarians, full-time staff and contributors like you. One of WRARI’s main focuses is to increase the awareness of the importance of handling and seeking care for abandoned wild animals. Whether your find is an owl, a rabbit, a turtle or even a deer, the Wildlife Clinic staff is there, latex gloves ready, and grateful for your assistance. Located at 25 Shermantown Road in Saunderstown, the Wildlife Clinic is open to anyone wishing to volunteer or with a needy critter. “We always need assistance. Volunteers can help by manning informational tables, getting involved in fundraisers, helping with our newsletters, or volunteering at the clinic,” suggests Fletcher. WRARI’s website also offers extensive information such as ways to get involved, how to become a member, what to do with a found animal, and much more. WRARI urges locals who know of hurt or abandoned animals to contact their hotline or stop by the clinic, and reminds those who discover an animal that it is not only dangerous to keep a wild animal, but it is illegal as well. For more information or to report an animal, call the Wildlife hotline at 294-6363, or check out their website www.riwildliferehab.org. -Abby Ringiewicz

What inspired you to create a shop that not only caters to animals but their owners? It occurred to us when creating our Jamestown dog collars and leads that people might want belts and/or key fobs to match. I had also wanted to make a Jamestown bead to fit the European style charm bracelets for some time; this storefront gave me the push to do it. We islanders are proud of where we live and often want something that represents it, while visitors can have a nice souvenir to wear all year. I will point out that not all accessories have a Jamestown theme; we also have a nice selection of collars, leads, harnesses, pet tags, jackets, wool sweaters, raincoats and life preservers. What types of animals does your shop specialize in? Right now we only cater to dogs and cats – and their people, of course. We are hoping to expand to equestrian, rabbits, birds and other small animals. For now, our research has been primarily on cats and dogs, and we will stick with what we know. How do you decide what products to carry? When it comes to food, supplements and treats, first and foremost we look at ingredients. We like to see a

simple ingredient list that is geared toward total nutrition. We avoid foods that have unnecessary fillers such as corn, soy, gluten and sugar. We totally believe that health and wellbeing can be achieved through proper nutrition and exercise. We have found that if we are diligent in healthy nutrition for our animals our vet bills diminish drastically.

cal shelters as well as many island groups and organizations. We are trying to raise awareness about the hardships of our military dogs and the need for specialized gear for them, which is not provided by the government. We are collecting donations for Lackland Air Force Base Military Working Dogs as they try to supply these dogs with the equipment they need.

What are the most popular pet toys that you sell? Probably Tuffies. They are plush, but very durable toys that come in a lot of fun shapes. We sell a lot of lobsters from their Sea Creatures series. We also sell a lot of aquatic toys, many of which come in bright colors so that you can locate a toy easily should a rogue wave come and cause you to lose sight of it.

What is your favorite part about owning Island Animal? Meeting the new puppies and watching them grow. However, there are so many great things about it. Helping people prepare for their new puppies, providing people with healthy nutrition for their dogs and cats and helping people with different problems are all highly rewarding.

How do you give back to the community? We have made donations to lo-

What makes Island Animal different from a Petco or a Petsmart? We are a locally owned and operated pet supply store focusing on your dog’s or cat’s health and well being. Our philosophy is to be a general store for animals and their humans that keeps your pets healthy, happy and well behaved. We approach things holistically. We have done a great deal of research and believe in the products we carry. We have very healthy, nutritious food, treats and supplements. Our toys are durable and many of them have been tested on our two German shepherds.

The Tale of the Tower A house inside a house is reborn

Photography: Mike Braca

THE ROYAL CHAMBER: The Palczynskis took what was a very formal house and turned it into a welcoming environment

Majestically perched at the end of a treeshaded street in Westerly’s Shelter Harbor, Sea Tower presides over the peaceful, saltwater cove like a watchdog in the night. Built in 1926, the castle-like manse survived the infamous Great Hurricane of 1938, which washed away many of South County’s waterfront homes, businesses and attractions, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. Of course, when you have a home made of solid stone, its survival doesn’t raise any eyebrows. “It’s actually a house inside a house,” explains Rhea Palczynski, who bought the residence in 1993 with her husband Dick. One of a few houses they call home, the couple wasn’t in any rush to change Sea Tower until Rhea, an avid cook, flirted with the idea of renovating the kitchen. “But when [remodelers] started to look at everything that was wrong, they said, ‘Well, you can upgrade the kitchen, but it’s a waste of money and a waste of time.’ So, we got a structural engineer and he was like, ‘Oh God.’ We brought in an architect named George Penniman and he just took a disaster and turned it into a beautiful home,” she smiles. “I mean, the house was really falling down on itself, but you couldn’t tell until they started to poke around in there.” The first step the couple took in the redesign was to whittle the tiny eight bedrooms, which

included servant quarters, into five roomy ones, some with en suite bathrooms, with enough space to accommodate king- and queen-sized beds, says Palczynski. A TV room and office was made from reconfigured space, and a billiards room boasting a full-service granite bar was the only completely new construction. Her favorite space, undoubtedly, is where it all started: the kitchen. Betsy House of Betsy House Kitchen and Bath Designs in Stonington, Connecticut, was able to work around the unmovable structural elements to design an oversized space with subtle Tuscan flair. House collaborated with Penniman; the builder, Gardner Woodwrights of Saunderstown; and interior designer Ramona Rodger of Lifestyle Designs in Newport to finally give the kitchen, the heart of the home, a waterfront view. “I cried the first time I walked in and it was framed and I could see the water,” concedes Palczynski. “I literally burst out crying.” “This is a serious kitchen,” declares Rodger. “It’s got the two dishwashers, two trivection ovens, and a big pantry so you have all your food storage.” With four grandchildren and seven of nine bothers and sisters (on Rhea’s side of the family) within driving distance of Sea Tower, the kitchen needed to be conducive to entertaining for large parties.

“What usually happens is we have the observers, the cleaner-uppers, and of course, the cooks,” she laughs. Palczynski chose an unorthodox space for the refrigerator, placing it opposite the island range and the u-shaped main galley of the kitchen. “Betsy was a little concerned because I told her I did not want the refrigerator in [the main] area. I wanted it in the traffic pattern, and she said, ‘Well, that’s not convenient for you.’ I said, ‘Convenient enough. It’s not me that matters, there’s always someone sitting there.’” While the kitchen was Rhea’s domain, the couple embraced a bit of a role reversal when Dick’s interest grew regarding the layout and plan of the rest of the house. “My husband has never been involved in decorating a house,” reveals Rhea. “This one he was probably more involved than I was!” Rodger was tasked with merging the couple’s respective visions with the structural capabilities – and limitations – of the home. “It took a little while to define what that vision would be,” says the designer, “but we all worked together and it was a really good experience. Dick was really involved; the only thing he didn’t care about was the auxiliary bathrooms and bedrooms.” With oak floors throughout and subtle shades of taupe, yellow and soft blue on the walls, there’s

a relaxing-meets-sophisticated feel throughout, but the formal spaces are clearly defined. The dining room seats up to 14. The Great Hall is awash in marble, replete with a multi-hued compass rose and an 800-watt chandelier. In the “museum,” as the family calls it, where a turret reaches to the sky, swords line the circular walls and a life-sized suit of armor greets guests. It is a hint of the home’s past. “This was all very, very Tudor,” Rodger explains. “It almost looked like Snow White’s Castle,” Palczynski chimes in. “There’s still a very castle feel, but oh, it was dark,” Rodger says the collaboration between herself, Rhea and Dick, as well as Penniman the architect, achieved the goal of creating not a causal house, but a formal house that’s comfortable. “Rhea said to me, ‘Ramona, you have to still imagine little kids running with bathing suits and bare feet right out of the water,’” says Rodger. French doors lead out to the expansive patio, with a portion enclosed and another dotted with Adirondack chairs that soak up the sun, giving the best vantage point to the panoramic water views. Landscape architect Anne Penniman of Essex, Connecticut, embraced the natural elements, peppered with age-old boulders peering out of the earth, by installing low-maintenance specimens that the Palczynskis can manage during their summers here. Penniman’s work has also provided the ethereal backdrop for many of the dinner parties with neighbors, family and friends enjoyed here. As Palczynski looks out onto the shallow lapping waves of Quonochontaug Pond from Sea Tower’s highest point, a smile crosses her face, and her affection for being here is palpable.

Well, not exactly, but you can de-stress the Hawaiian way

• • • • •

“What exactly does a Hawaiian massage entail?” I thought as I received this month’s assignment. I’ve encountered some unusual, intriguing and downright strange health and wellness experiences while writing this column, but I’ve never gotten the opportunity to receive a massage, let alone a Hawaiian one. Debbie Peacock of Neuromuscular Treatment Center was my Hawaiian Lomi lomi massage therapist for the day. Peacock, who first heard of Lomi lomi while in school at the Florida School of Massage, explained that when she heard the name and background of this particular massage, she had to learn. “It sounded like the name of a dance,” she recalls. As I prepared for an hour session of pampering, Peacock imparted what she had learned about the rich tradition of Lomi lomi. Traditionally in Hawaiian culture, Lomi lomi was an integral act to maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life. Typically, it was used before rites of passage like marriage or entering adulthood, as well as to restore family members’ health. Peacock explained that unlike a typical deep tissue massage, Lomi lomi is holistic, using long strokes and passive stretching. Variously translated as “to create space,” “to create little pieces,” or “loving hands,” the massage is intended to cleanse muscle toxins, increase circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system and release energy flow. Additionally, as the massage is holistic, Peacock explained that those receiving Lomi lomi could also be affected on an emotional and spiritual level. I opted for the one-hour massage, but Peacock’s normal sessions, which include restorative abdominal work, typically take two hours. She sug-

gested that athletes and those looking for a kind of “yummy” treat would enjoy the massage the most, saying it’s great for birthdays or for those looking to de-stress and revitalize. When I was ready for the massage, I lay on the table and waited for Peacock. I half expected she’d come in with a headdress and roll coconuts down my back, but she instead started with a Hawaiian prayer. I let my preconceived notions go when I saw no fire breathers were trailing behind her, and I began to relax as Peacock started the massage. I did notice the long rhythmic strokes. It felt as if every part of my body was being worked on, and it felt like I was being massaged from a friend rather than a stranger trying to get all the kinks out. From the headrest, I could see Peacock was also moving in a rhythmic motion. Peacock told me later that she was in fact doing the hula, and

that her movements reflected the energy she felt from me. Peacock also worked her Lomi lomi magic on my face, using a lighter lotion to massage my forehead, cheeks, temples and neck. Between the calming music and the rhythmic movements, I thought I was by the Hawaiian shore swinging in a hammock, not in South County lying on a massage table. I was greeted with an “Aloha” as I opened my eyes. Peacock finished the session and let me relax a bit more as she left the room. Our session had ended and my body felt rejuvenated. Sessions for Lomi lomi start around $70 for 60 minutes. If you’re interested in experiencing some Hawaiian pleasure but can’t get away, I’d highly recommend Lomi Iomi massage as your next best option. Cheers To Summer Dina Lindia on summer beverage selections Voted Best Ice Cream in R.I.

Dina Lindia with Wine Manager Toby Roberts

Summer is the season for fruity, mixed drinks. Are there any simple mixers or bottled drinks in your store that you recommend for the hot weather? We carry an array of “ready to drink” items and mixers at our store. One of my favorite mixers is Stirrings Mojito Mix; the directions are on the back of the bottle so it is simple and easy to make. I find it tastes best with 10 Cane rum. We also have a freezer full of ready to drink “adult slushy” beverages that are sure to cool you down on these hot summer days.

Photography: Amy Amerantes

Once summer hits, what drinks tend to leave your shelves the fastest? We find that the summer drinker tends to go for white or rose wines over reds and a lighter style beer, such as Corona, over a porter style. Of course, the Margarita and Piña Colada ingredients are flying off the shelves this time of year. Are there any blended drink or cocktail recipes that you suggest during the summer? Sangria is a big summer seller. We suggest you find an inexpensive dry red wine like Carlo Rossi Sangria. Then add in some brandy, a couple cans of Sprite, pineapple and orange juice, a few shots of triple sec and some fresh fruit slices. Let this mixture sit for a few hours and pour over ice for a very refreshing summer beverage. I like serving this drink at parties because you can make large batches at a time.

Being in the liquor business for some time now, you must anticipate Narragansett’s summer crowds. How do you prepare for the tourist season? In our store, one of our major attributes is customer service. To prepare for the summer crowds, we make sure our staff is warm, welcoming, knowledgeable and ready to carry your bags to the car. Secondly, we bulk up our shelves with items that are hot in the summertime such as tequilas, beers, white and rose wines. Are there any new beverages in the store for the season? How do you choose seasonal offerings? We carry a lot of seasonal beers, but we find that the summer offerings from most of the brewers are most popular right behind the fall brews. We tend to choose our seasonal offerings based on what the hottest new items are. This year it seems to be elderflower, pomegranate, ginger and cucumber liqueurs. Our distributors give us the opportunity to try before we buy, so decisions are also made from what we think a consumer will enjoy. Being a fine wine store, Pier Liquors offers a wide range of wines. Are there any specific bottles that you often recommend to the summer crowds? This summer we are trying to focus on breaking the consumer out of the comfort zone. If you are a normal California Sauvignon Blanc drinker, we may try and

introduce you to a French wine of similar taste aspects and vice versa. Our big thing this year is Rose. We have a front display loaded with them and we are eager to share these with the consumers – they are not your typical White Zinfandel type of Rose. Could you give us some inexpensive, summery wines that are a good choice to bring to a cookout or summer party? Baron Fini Pinot Grigio is a nice Italian Pinot Grigio for a great price; it comes from the same region as Santa Margherita, but is much less expensive. Also, Mulderbosch Rose is fantastic for the summer and is made from the Cabernet grape. Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is also very popular. What is your favorite summer drink? My new summer drink is the St. Germain Margarita. You take a little blanco tequila, replace your triple sec with St. Germain Liqueur, add some fresh lemon/lime juice and pour it all over ice. Voila! You have an amazing cocktail.

The Spiced Pear

Savory Summer New restaurants bring classic tastes to the coast My brother always said I was blessed; I’m starting to think he was right. Not one, not two, but three BYOB restaurants have opened up in Narragansett, right in my little neighborhood. This past weekend, I stopped in at all three. I love diners, and the Olde Lighthouse Diner has opened on the corner of Point Judith Road and Knowlesway Extension, in the space that formerly housed El Fuego. This diner is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week. I dropped by for breakfast, and by 9am they ran out of their corned beef hash, so go early. All the standard breakfast fare is there, plus some creative suggestions from the chef, such as the Breakfast Taco that I heartily recommend. Three scrambled eggs, chourico and cheddar jack cheese are folded inside a large flour tortilla that’s served with a hot salsa and home fries. For more info, call 284-3883. By the way, they have a handy take-out window and picnic tables in the shade. Right across the street at 865 Point Judith Road is ZuZu’s (what a great name), which has become my new favorite place for falafel, that chickpea fritter that I’m addicted to now. They also have the best pita chips that I’ve ever had, made in-house and so delicate. The menu is a mix of Middle Eastern, Greek, Italian and all-American dishes. The small Italian grinder is actually quite large and packed with premium cold cuts. Everything seems very fresh. You can watch the food being prepared in the semiopen kitchen. There’s a big FIFO sign on the refrigerator door. That stands for 52 SO RHODEISLAND | August 2010

“first in, first out,” so you know they are rotating their ingredients to keep things fresh. For dessert, all I ever need is one of their sweet and crunchy baklava “fingers” – a mere 95 cents. This is tightly rolled phyllo dough that’s stuffed with ground cashews, topped with ground pistachios, baked, and then soaked with orange blossom and rose water honey, a Middle Eastern delicacy. They deliver – all you have to do is call 789-4210. Just down the street from our house is the new location for the Starboard Galley at 5 Angell Road, across from Scarborough State Beach. For 20 years, the Starboard Galley was at the southern end of the Narragansett sea wall. Then in 2006, partners Molly Marks and Tom Silvia moved their chowder and clam cake operation to Charlestown. Their food is so good that many of their fans, including me, followed them to Charlestown, taking a drive now and then just to have the far-above-average food. Now, the folks of Charlestown will be taking a ride to Narragansett when they’re craving Molly and Tom’s food. Tom was a commercial lobsterman for 20 years, so he knows seafood. The first night I stopped in, it was just for fish and chips to go. As I walked out of this restaurant, I realized what a great aroma their food had. It really did smell like fresh ocean air. This summer, they are my hands-down favorite spot for clam cakes – great, big, odd-shaped balls of fried batter, the airy inside dotted with chunks of quahogs and the light golden brown surface with

just the right amount of crunch. The menu also offers seafood sandwich rolls, regular sandwiches (including Saugy hot dogs and veggie burgers), salads and full seafood dinners. Three kinds of chowder – clear, white and red – are available, as well as some pretty neat combo specials. The Starboard Galley is a little hard to find because it’s tucked into the back of the Scarborough Beach Motel, but don’t give up – it would be a shame if you didn’t get there at least once this summer. They are open every day for lunch and dinner. For more info, call 782-1366, or visit www. starboardgalleyrestaurant.com. DOING THE RIGHT THING The Spiced Pear at the Chanler Hotel in Newport is donating $5 from every Lobster BLT sold to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Restoration Fund, in an effort to aid the creatures harmed in the oil spill. The fund is overseen by the National Wildlife Federation. This special promotion will be in effect until at least September 30, according to Christine Sullivan, general manager. Sullivan got the idea after wondering what it would be like if this man-made disaster occurred along the Rhode Island coastline. “It’s unfathomable,” said Sullivan. “As a coastal property, we understand the importance of protecting all of our resources – the food we eat, the wildlife we watch, the beaches we visit and the ocean we swim in. The effects of the Gulf Coast oil spill are far reaching, and we are only beginning to understand the full extent of the damage to our oceans,

shorelines, wildlife, and our fishing and tourism industries. We need to come together and fix it.” For more information about The Chanler or Spiced Pear, visit www.TheChanler.com, or call 847-1300. WICKEDLY GOOD Foodies of Wickford, a new chocolate and gourmet shop, has opened in the rear of Bagelz at 21 West Main Street in Wickford. Candy, freshly made fudge, jellybeans, truffles and gourmet items from local producers will be available. They plan to eventually offer freshly made peanut butter, too. For more info, contact Craig Schennum, who operates Consignment Goods at 7511 Post Road in North Kingstown, at 295-0500. He also plans to offer special consignment items, entire estates and very unusual pieces in the Wickford location. WHAT’S NEW One of my favorite places on earth, The Towers at 35 Ocean Road in Narragansett, offers themed luncheons every Wednesday this summer. The complete meal, priced at $14.50, includes salad, soup, entrée and dessert, catered by Tom’s Market of Coventry. This month, the themes will be Seaside Surf on August 4, Artisan Alfresco on August 11, Southwestern Roundup on August 18, Oriental Delight on August 25 and Grecian Islands on September 1. For more info, call 782-2597. If you have news dealing with food, restaurants or chefs, feed it to Linda Beaulieu at Lindab2720@aol.com.

The New Kid in Town A city classic heads to East Greenwich This summer’s latest

Photograpy: Marc Creedon

heat wave finally eased up enough for me to be in the mood to eat something more than a salad. With the humidity lifting and a pleasant sea breeze returning, the thought of dining al fresco was once again appealing. It was time to check out Hemenway’s Dockside Dining on the East Greenwich waterfront. This is the new baby sister operation of Hemenway’s Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar in Providence. It was four o’clock on a Thursday afternoon, and I had forgotten to make a reservation. We wanted to avoid the mob scene so many restaurants experience around seven at night, so we thought an early dinner between five and six would be perfect. I went to Hemenway’s website for the restaurant’s phone number and saw that I could make a reservation online through Open Table. Hmmm… I had been meaning to try this online service. In no time at all I reserved a table for two. Almost instantly I received an email confirming my reservation. Soon I was in my car heading north to East Greenwich, having to deal with late-afternoon beach traffic. Somehow I made it to Hemenway’s just in time to meet my dining companion, Cindy, a dear friend and fellow foodie. We were seated at an outdoor table with a multi-million dollar view of pleasure craft, mostly luxurious powerboats and some serious sailboats. The affable Jen tended to our every need. In no rush, we started with every item the raw bar has to offer:

oysters, cherrystone clams, littleneck clams, jumbo shrimp cocktail and crab claws ($1.50 to $2.75 each). The Malpeque oysters were smaller than we expected but light-bodied, with the right balance of sweetness and brine. The clams on the half shell passed my taste test: that is, one slurp and you should feel like you just got hit in the face with an ocean wave. The shrimp were indeed jumbo and cooked just long enough so there was a toothy crunch to every bite. The crab claws were as I always find them: maddening. Even with the tiny cocktail fork, I still could not extricate every precious bit of crabmeat from the thick claw. The accompanying cocktail sauce, with its huge dollop of horseradish, was superb. After these preliminary appetizers, we ordered “regular” appetizers: Crab and Lobster Cakes ($13) and the Lobster Bisque ($5 for a cup). This was the high point of our dinner. Served with a fresh corn relish, the two patty cakes would make a fine lunch. They were chock full of crabmeat and tiny bits of lobster, with a light coating of breadcrumbs on the outside to seal in all the moist and flavorful ingredients. The bisque was declared “perfect,” with a consistency neither too thick nor too thin. It was rich without being cloying. The grilled and classic entrees on the menu are served with your choice of the house or Caesar salad. Cindy bet on the house, with a fabulous honey-curry dressing, while I said, “Hail Caesar.” I was delighted when our waitress asked if I wanted ancho-

vies on my salad. Now that’s a Caesar salad done right, at least in my book. For the main event, Cindy chose a healthy dinner while I gave in to my deep-fried cravings. After one bite into the Grilled Sea Bass ($30), Cindy decided it was “too plain.” She asked for and received a side dish of peach chutney to liven it up. She also found fault with her fresh green beans, which were “too buttery.” Can anything be “too buttery?” Not in my world. This is a perfect example of how subjective a dining experience can be. Two good friends sitting at the same table were having very different reactions to the food being put before them. I had found Nirvana with the Fried Fisherman’s Platter ($23). At first glance, I was taken aback by what seemed to be a small serving. This was not the usual mountain of fried seafood served over fries that we Rhode Islanders have come to expect. For one thing, I went with a baked potato instead of fries, with plenty of butter and sour cream on the side. But all the vital components of a true fisherman’s platter were there: the fat, curled-up shrimp, the plump scallops, the whole belly clams and the scrod. First things first, I thought, as I ate up all the golden fried clams, then the scrod, only to wish there had been a bit more of this fried fish on my plate. After one fried shrimp and one scallop, plus most of the baked potato (which was quite large) and a bite or two of the outstanding coleslaw, I cried uncle. I could not eat another bite. At least not for a little while. We sipped on our glasses of wine and

looked out on the vast sea of boats. A huge cigarette boat was so close we could almost reach out and touch it. A beautiful late afternoon was turning into a perfect summer evening. We noticed that all the tables around us were filling up with men and boys wearing cargo shorts and boat shoes, and bejeweled women in all-white outfits with young daughters in colorful sundresses. Time passed, and ah, yes, there was now room for a bit of dessert. The Three-Berry Tart ($7) seemed to be the most appropriate for the season. Raspberries, strawberries and blueberries were baked into oblivion in a light, golden crust and topped with a large scoop of Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. Impossible to resist was Hemenway’s Carrot Cake ($7), which I learned to love at the original Hemenway’s in Providence. Three layers of moist nut-studded carrot cake were filled with a cream cheese-white chocolate icing. Then, after two leisurely hours dockside, it was time to go. August FROM PREVIOUS PAGE August 10-15 Remember that time you were strolling down the street, minding your own business and a bit of a commotion about a half of a block ahead of you got your attention? Naturally, what else was there to do, other than start framing the action with your hands, getting the wide angle shot, before rushing in for the close-ups. Only when the actors refused to respond to your request for take two did you snap out of the trance, sprint after the mugger and retrieve the stolen purse. There’s a place for your type at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, featuring 175 films from 62 countries screened at locations across the state, including the VMA Arts and Cultural Center in Providence and Newport’s Jane Pickens Theatre. Behind the Hedgerow, a local documentary of Newport Society, plays opening night in Providence, with an additional Newport screening on August 14. Locations statewide. When These Men Dance, They Lose Their Pants Taking it all off at Theatre by the Sea You see all sorts

of folks stripped down in the summertime. Usually, they’re at the beach. But when was the last time you saw an underdog undressed, indoors? If you have to think about it, clearly it’s been too long. Avoid insulting your significant other, throw on a cover-up, and make a mad dash to Theatre By The Sea for their season finale: a musical called The Full Monty. On the outside, the beloved barn theatre may still appear to be in Matunuck, RI, especially with the salty breezes blowing and fragrant flowers blooming. But inside, the place is Buffalo, NY — and it’s no bed of roses. Times are tough for unemployed steelworkers, and hope is fading fast. Best buddies Jerry and Dave really feel the pinch, with the former behind on child support payments and the latter forced to become a house-husband. When a Chippendales-style male revue comes to town, the guys can’t believe how the ladies line up — and shell out the dough — to see it. An idea dawns on Jerry. Why are the local boys singing the blues, when they could be bringing in big bucks? They need to develop their own striptease act! He manages to make Dave a believer and to assemble a ragtag group, but soon faces other challenges. The men have to hold auditions, learn choreography, book a club, and find their inner confidence — not to mention their sense of rhythm. If the funny story sounds familiar, it’s because the play is based on a hit 1997 British film of the same name. With book by Terrence McNally and music and lyrics by David Yazbeck, the musical comedy made a big splash on Broadway back in 2000. Another show composed by Yazbeck, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, closed the season at Theatre By the Sea (TBTS) last year to great success. Yazbeck’s particular blend of rock, pop and funk creates an exciting, contemporary score that you can expect to end this summer with a bang (and maybe a wolf whistle). Director Russell Garrett helms the production, with musical direction by Andrew Smithson. Joel Kipper takes the stage as Malcolm, a character who

starts off friendless, repressed, and seriously depressed and ends up downright joyful. It’s a fun role for the managing producer of TBTS, whose offstage duties include supervising and staffing the technical department, handling property management, aiding the producing artistic director Aimee Turner, and even plunging the occasional toilet. Luckily he’s had practice with on- and offstage multi-tasking, having starred in TBTS’ George M! in ’08. Now, in the production team’s third full season at the revamped theatre, Kipper feels the group has hit their stride and, for him, finding time to perform will be easier. Since TBTS’ reopening, the Kansas City-born Kipper has become a proud full-time resident of South Kingstown. Kipper’s love of show business started with clogging. He danced competitively for thirteen years of his youth be-

guys’ guy kind of show,” but notes that it challenges preconceptions of what makes a man a man. “Is it material possessions? Is it providing for a family? Is it being macho? What is it, exactly?” The answers suggested by the play may surprise you. “Whether you’re a man or a woman, there’s a lot in there that you can relate to,” Kipper says. “By the time it gets to the climax of the musical, you’re really rooting for these guys. You’re on their side and you want to see them succeed.” After chatting with Kipper, this humble columnist found that one burning question remained. Given the title, and the fact that the play is about a group of steelworkers-turned-strippers, will the cast be taking it all off? Kipper chuckled in response. “Well, I can’t give that away, actually. You have to come see the show to find out.” So, um… what

fore becoming an actor and traveling all over the country. With TBTS, he has found a new and welcoming home. “I’ve worked in a lot of regional theatres, and I’ve never quite run across a community that felt so strongly about a theatre,” he reveals. “Being a part of reopening it back in ’07, you really got a sense that when this place closed it was like a family member died. There’s been nothing but excitement and enthusiasm from the patron base since we reopened.” Kipper considers The Full Monty “a

can’t quite recall how she learned about centaurs, griffins and other legendary creatures, but she knows that she was fascinated by them as a child. “I never read mythology, so I am not sure where I saw them,” she says, “but somewhere along the line they stuck in my subconscious.” Barber, of Jamestown, enrolled at RISD with only a vague notion of wanting to be an artist. Having drawn throughout her life she suspected that she would end up in illustration, but during freshman year all students are required to sample all the art media available. She had never touched clay before then, but very quickly knew that it would end up being her major. “I did not enjoy the pottery wheel and I had no interest in making mugs and plates,” she recalls, “but I took my interest in chimeras and other fantastical creatures and started to build them from clay.” She also started casting people’s faces in plaster to create molds for ceramic masks. Along the way she has added flowing fish and whimsical mermaids as well as beautiful and colorful jardinières. During her early career she was creating large wholesale orders for

30-40 stores all over the country. “No one locally knew who I was,” she laughs, “because all my work was sent elsewhere.” She started to feel isolated and began to join local art associations. Today she sticks close to home and her work is found in such places as the Sun Up Gallery in Watch Hill and the Courtyard in Little Compton, among others. The masks are among her most popular items. She surrounds some with carvings of foliage in the style of the folklore Green Man (or woman); others include water and other elements, and some are ringed with mythical story telling. She will even create a personalized mask with a cast of your own face. To catch a view of her cheeky mermaids, amusing dragons, hauntingly beautiful masks and all the other creatures large and small you can visit Barber at the Jamestown Community Center on August 8 or at the Newport Yachting Center on August 30-31. Just watch out what might follow you home!

So Approved

By Christina Pazienza

Nice and Smooth Nothing beats an ice cold drink to cool off on a hot summer day. To get our frozen fix we sampled smoothies from a few local favorites. These frosty concoctions were a refreshing way to beat the heat.

Fra’s Italian Gourmet

Mainstreet Coffee This decadent smoothie pulled double duty, quenching our thirst and satisfying our appetite. With a texture that was very creamy and thick with a simple combo of strawberry and banana, this smoothie was a crowd pleaser. 137 Main Street, East Greenwich. 885-8787.

Smoothy Booty

Spinnaker’s

Made with tons of fresh fruit, this tropical frozen treat was refreshing and light. It was an exotic fusion of pineapple and mango that tasted just like a tropical daiquiri. 213 Robinson Street, Wakefield. 783-4013; www.smoothybooty.com.

The intense flavor of this mixed berry smoothie was tart with tons of fresh berries and frozen yogurt. While we wished the texture was slightly smoother, the combination of strawberry, blueberry and raspberry was full of flavor. 3 Ferry Wharf, Jamestown. 423-3077; www.spinnakerscafe.com.

It’s five o’clock somewhere! That’s what this pineapple coconut smoothie, that with just a splash of rum could be a perfect pina colada, had us all thinking. The bold, yet not overpowering, coconut flavor was a hit that wasn’t overwhelmingly fruity or sweet. 57 Shore Road, Westerly. 5962888; www.frasitaliangourmet.com.
