KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER Word of Mouth is the Best Advertising! The More You Know

“Forget about reading, writing and arithmetic. The five R's here are relax, reflect, revitalize, rejoice and renew. Kenneth Cote Renewal Center covers all the above bases. Experience pampering in the spa where you'll enjoy their day spa packages. The fashionable, diverse clientele, ranging from prom-going teenagers to socialites and everyone in between, can't seem to get enough of this place." –Rhode Island Monthly

“After a disastrous coloring experience, I found myself in Rhode Island with hideous hair. I called and begged for a color correction appointment and they fit me in the next day. My stylist patiently stepped through the process of neutralizing the red color, recoloring and highlighting my hair so that it looked normal again instead of the one inch red band at my hairline and then dark ash blonde. I also appreciated that there was another colorist in the salon who made suggestions on how to best undo the coloring disaster she inherited. The more you know, indeed.” –Sue D., Arlington, VA

Found What I Was Looking For

by our clients who know us best and the readers of Rhode Island Monthly

“My stylist is so knowledgeable and professional. Not only did she cut my hair expertly, she gave me lots of great advice and tips about products and styling techniques specifically for my hair type and style. After four years of trying salon after salon, and stylist after stylist all over Rhode Island, I finally found what I was looking for in both!" –Erica B., EG. RI

Facial Was Fantastic "Finding an upscale, clean, professional spa is a difficult task. After a few attempts at other "day spas" (beware any beauty parlor with a curtain and a foot bath that calls themselves a day spa) I finally discovered Kenneth Cote. Relaxed atmosphere yet professional! Very clean environment, well-versed employees, good products and product knowledge, spa area separate from salon area, peaceful and relaxing. No hard-sell of products though I did leave with a few of my own choosing. No pressure for rebooking though I scheduled another day package and also a few weekly appointments. Good hours, evening appointments are available and easy parking. I would recommend an hour massage… the halfhour wasn't enough for me. Facial was fantastic as well." –Christine M., Prov., RI

Worth The Trip! “My stylist is great and I always come out looking like a million and receive many compliments on my cut and color. I know that traveling to East Greenwich is a longer trip for me but Kenneth Cote is well worth the trip!” –Beverly C., NP, RI

Letters From the Editor If there’s one thing we all agree on, it’s that southern Rhode Island is a great community in which to live and get involved. But what would that community be without the people who build it, nurture it and make it such a wonderful, unique place? This month we introduce you to several local allstars, from a dedicated historic preservationist to a networker who brings together people with common interests and concerns, but what they all have in common is that they’re working to build a better South County. We hope they inspire you. Elsewhere in this issue, we take a trip

to URI’s Alton Jones Campus to discover one of Rhode Island’s truly great natural resources, and learn all about what’s happening at the Environmental Education Center. Plus, we get a taste of the newest, freshest dining to hit the Charlestown Breachway; it’s got all the classic beach fare you expect, but with some impressively upscale twists. If you want to know how to stay entertained as summer winds down, be sure to check the fall arts preview in On Stage. September might be the time to slip back into a more predictable routine after summer, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less exciting. -Julie

From Our Readers High-Flying Praise Not only are all of us at Foster Parrots thrilled to be part of the community here in Rhode Island, but we are grateful for your magazine’s coverage of our efforts (“For the Birds,” August 2011). The response from the wonderful article written by Erin DeVito was unexpected to say the least. It was one of the best ever written about us and we now have a couple of new volunteers and a few new connections to the local schools. Thanks for joining us to the rest of this wonderful community. Marc Johnson Foster Parrots Ltd.

FOR PETS

A Barkin’ Good Time There’s no better time than the dog days of summer (or fall) to pamper your pet with treats. So goes the philosophy behind Johnny’s Barkin’ Bakery, the brand new bakery and boutique specializing in all natural, fresh baked goods for dogs and cats alike. It recently opened at South County Commons, and Johnny’s is already distinguishing itself from the typical pet bakery thanks to owner Alexandra Miller. According to Miller, “Dogs aren’t just welcome at Johnny’s – the space was built for them. There is a specially designed water fountain for our thirsty four-

legged friends, custom seating areas where customers can sit down and relax with their pets, and a play ramp for entertainment.” In addition to the high quality treats (made on site with no preservatives or artificial ingredients), Johnny’s also carries an extensive line of gluten- and grain-free items, as well as an eclectic mix of dog accessories such as hand-beaded leather collars from Kenya, life jackets, solid wood and wicker deluxe pet residences and the ever-popular Thundershirt. The bakery also hosts special events with shelters and rescue associations each month

to raise money and awareness for pet adoption opportunities. In memory of Johnny, the dog for whom the bakery is named (a mixed breed Miller’s best friend had adopted from an animal shelter in 2003), each year two percent of all profits will be donated to the Rhode Island chapter of the SPCA. With Johnny’s Fund and the wonderful products at Johnny’s Barkin’ Bakery, you can not only indulge your own pet but help other shelter animals in need. 35 South County Commons Way, South Kingstown. 284-4599, www.johnnysbarkinbakery.com –Devin Karambelas

SOCIAL MEDIA

Little Elegance

Monetizing Mom Are you like me? Do you think you qualify as a digital mom because you have a Facebook page and a smart phone? Think – rather, tweet – again. Brown grad and Warwick resident Audrey McClelland is redefining motherhood in the digital age. Caught between wanting to be a stay-athome-mom and wanting to contribute to the household income, Audrey found a creative and lucrative way to have the best of both worlds. She started a blog, MomGenerations.com, which quickly became a booming business that lined up contracts with Estee Lauder, T.J. Maxx and Suave.

Now she’s sharing her social media secrets in The Digital Mom Handbook, a book recently released with co-author and fellow mommy blogger Colleen Padilla. A breezy and inspiring read, the book is full of tips on how to make money by tweeting, blogging and vlogging (that’s video blogging, for you novices). Even if you’re not interested in starting a digital career, it’s a great crash course on how to use social media. And if you’re really like me, you’ll never look at your LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook accounts the same again. www.digitalmomhandbook.com –Jeanette St. Pierre

On A BOAT

Set Your Sails It’s no secret that that the warm summer months flood New England waters with sailing regattas and fishing enthusiasts, but for those who fear the sea or just didn’t make it out to the waves, there is an alternative. The ninth annual Wickford Cup Race offers the same boating spectacle, just on a much smaller scale. On Sunday, September 18, hundreds of miniature plastic toy boats will race their way to victory in the waters of Wickford Cove. Bring the whole family for children’s games and entertainment pro-

vided by the Quahog Man State, delicious food and prizes for the top three racers. Toy sailboats are available for charter at $5 each; each purchase raises funds for high school scholarships, the North Kingstown Food Pantry and Laymen in North Kingstown Schools. Racing starts on the Town Dock on the Brown Street Bridge at 11am and the festivities conclude at 5pm. So throw on your dockers, straw hats and sunnies for a day of ocean fun, without getting your feet wet. www.wickfordvillage.org –Emily Nissensohn

SURF’S UP

Healing Power There may be no cure for autism, but Surfer’s Healing offers a unique therapy to children living with the disorder. This nonprofit organization holds one-day surf camps on coasts throughout the country, including Puerto Rico and Hawaii. On September 17, Surfer’s Healing will come to Narragansett Beach for a fun-filled, therapeutic day of surf lessons. The organization was founded by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz, whose son was diagnosed with autism at age three. Israel is a former competitive surfer, and the pair founded the organization after witnessing the calming, remedial effect the sport had on their son. Surfer’s Healing now offers autistic children across the nation that same experience. Volunteers and donations are always welcome and appreciated. www.surfershealing. org. -Erin DeVito

age Inn. Recently appointed Executive Chef Casey Shea and Restaurant Manager Lisel Woods will provide diners with farm-to-table driven cuisine in the welcoming atmosphere of Jamestown’s only waterfront restaurant. Proudly serving Jamestown since 1889, patrons have visited the Bay Voyage Inn time and time again for the award-winning cuisine and stunning views of Narragansett Bay and the Newport Bridge. The Bay Voyage Inn has received prolific acclaims over its many years of business, including holding Rhode Island Monthly’s “Best Brunch” award for 20 consecutive years, and awards for “Most Romantic Dining,” as well as “Most Decadent Dessert.” Chef Shea will uphold the tradition of the Bay Voyage Inn by utilizing local seafood, all natural meats and local farm-grown vegetables. (Some very local, as the restaurant now has a small garden from which produce will be incorporated into seasonal menus.) The new menu is reflective of Chef Shea’s inspiration from the change of the seasons, the native seafood and the local farmers. Appetizers range from $6 to $15 and include mouthwatering choices such as mussels steamed with bacon and hard cider, salt cod croquettes, and grilled pizza with rosemary, potato, mozzarella and prosciutto. The salads include equally delicious options such as baked camembert with watercress and spring beet and arugula. The entree selection then fully immerses diners in the farm to table style of Chef Shea with selections such as the grilled ribeye with morel mushroom butter, crisp fingerling potatoes and rosemary thyme. Local sea fare includes the pan braised native haddock with charred onion and Peppadew ragout, green olives, cilantro and fried potatoes, or try the native shellfish cioppino simmered in a rich tomato seafood broth with garlic crustinis. (Entrees range in price from $15 to $26.) Manager Lisel Woods envisions patrons enjoying the last of their summer days taking in the Bay Voyage Inn’s stunning views while sipping cocktails and savoring the new menu. In the coming months, Ms. Woods welcomes guests to continue enjoying the bi-monthly wine tastings, the ever-popular Sunday brunch and Chef Shea’s seasonal menus inspired by fresh and local ingredients. Just minutes from downtown Newport, the Bay Voyage Inn and Resort is located at 150 Conanicus Avenue in Jamestown. Current restaurant hours include dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 5-9pm, and Sunday Brunch from 10am-2pm. Reservations are available by calling 423-2100. The restaurant offers customized special events, wedding and group functions. Additional information is available at www.BayVoyageInn.com.

Island Animal Your pet is a member of your family and, therefore, you want only want the best for it. Some of the “healthy” foods on the market for pets may not be as nutritious and safe as they appear. Island Animals in Jamestown, which carries a full line of holistic dog and cat products, caters to pet owners who are invested in the health and wellbeing of their beloved animals. The dog and cat food sold at the store is pure and made with good ingredients and no fillers. “We try to look at the whole picture: vitamins, amino acid content, etc. Every food isn’t right for every dog, so we carry a large selection,” says Pio Moretti, who owns the shop with his fiancé, Victoria Hellewell. “We have a great selection of raw foods that are highly digestive; the easier the food is to digest, the better it is for the animal.” Although Moretti and Hellewell have had animals all their lives, it was the cancer diagnosis of their German Shepherd Isla that inspired them to look into holistic care for animals. With Moretti’s background in sports training and Victoria’s in massage therapy, the two were able to learn their fields “from a canine’s perspective” while giving Isla attentive care. The two were also influenced by vets and others involved in the industry that they met along the way. Isla is now 100% healthy, undoubtedly because of the devotion of her parents to her health and wellbeing. Paying close attention to the ingredients and nutritional value of the products they carry, the two strongly believe that healthy pets are happier and better behaved. Aside from food, Island Animal also carries supplements, toys, collars and leashes, beds and training supplies. The couple takes special measures to ensure that the products are durable and high quality. “We have great testers,” Moretti adds, speaking of Isla and her brother, a black German Shepherd named Cuda. Island Animal also carries a selection of “people items,” like Jamestown belts and key fobs. They also have an exclusive Pandorastyle Jamestown bead and many other fun animal and nautical inspired beads. Island Animal is about limiting your dogs’ and cats’ vet trips to only wellness visits, and ensuring that they maintain a strong immune system and are in overall good health. With Moretti and Hellwell’s expertise and pre-approved products, you can rest assured that your adored pets are only getting the best.

Learning about nature at URI’s Alton Jones campus By Ken Shane To get to the W. Alton Jones campus of the University of Rhode Island, you start by turning off Route 102 in West Greenwich and descending down a long and narrow road. Before you know it, you are in the middle of a silent forest of majestic pine trees, some over 100 years old. It is soon clear that you have left behind the everyday world of southern Rhode Island. The evergreen path leads you down a narrow road to a world of streams, ponds, a pristine 75-acre lake, and endless hiking trails. Dotted here and there throughout the landscape are rustic cabins that have a variety of uses. If it is wildlife that interests you, there is plenty to be found here. The beaver population is hard at work creating dams. Aquatic insects buzz around salamanders, frogs and turtles down at the pond. Deer roam freely through the woods, and birds are everywhere. There are farm animals here as well, including cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, goats, turkeys and ducks. In short, it is a world that seems all at once familiar, and yet as distant as a past that is ever more frequently consigned to the pages of history books. In the 1920s, the 2,300 acres that now make up the W. Alton Jones campus were home to a group of farms, and in 1896 the land was purchased by William Easton Louttit, a prosperous English immigrant who had founded the Home Hand Laundry. Louttit used the property for his own recreational and relaxation purposes, and toward that end he built a number of structures as well as the beautiful lake (now named

Eisenhower Lake) that is a prominent feature of the campus. As the years went by and in-home washing machines and dryers became a fact of life in post-World War II America, Louttit’s business suffered. In 1955, he was forced to sell the property. Into the picture strode W. Alton Jones, a wealthy industrialist who was a close friend of the sitting president, Dwight Eisenhower. Jones, who owned several other sizable properties around the country, shared a keen interest in hunting and fishing with the president,

who was an occasional weekend guest at the property. In 1962, Jones died in an American Airlines crash in New York City. His widow had no interest in maintaining all the properties left to her, and put all but one on the market. As luck would have it, the caretaker of her Rhode Island property was a University of Rhode Island alumnus, and he convinced her to donate the property to the school for the purpose of educating children about the environment. Thus, the Environmental Education

Center (EEC) was founded, and summer camp programs were established in 1966. Two years later, a main lodge and a group of cabins were constructed for use by the campers. In the early 1970s, year-round school programs were introduced. The EEC is one of the only facilities of its kind in the nation, and the programs offered provide a stunning array of choices for children with a variety of interests, from farming to ecology to outdoor sports, sailing and rock climbing. Kids can stay for the day, or choose a night program called Earth Camp. The environmentally-focused camp, the EEC’s longest running program, started back in the ‘60s. Campers can study forest and wetland ecology, wildlife and marine life, and have the option to choose Night Camp, which fulfills the hopes of many young people by letting them stay up all night. According to EEC Manager John Jacques, “Most of the kids at Night Camp are night owls, so this is a nice, safe way for them to stay up and learn about the night, stars, owls and bats, and also have fun playing games. They get to have that all-nighter that a lot of kids that age really long for with a group of kids with similar interests.” Jacques came to the EEC full-time in 1993 after working there as a camp counselor while he was enrolled at URI. Many of the counselors are former campers themselves. Teen Expeditions is for young people from ages 12 to 17. It features adventurebased programs that give the campers the choice between kayaking, hiking, sailing and rock climbing. The campers can choose their own adventures, and they can either focus on a single sport for a week or choose the increasingly popular multi-sport weeks. Teen Expeditions may include kayaking off the coast of Arcadia Nation-

al Park in Maine, hiking in Vermont’s Green Mountains, rock climbing and rafting in the Adirondacks, or giving service by helping to reclaim historic land defenses at Fort Adams. Putting all of these programs together is no easy task, and it falls, for the most part, to Jacques. “Mostly it’s me sitting down and planning it,” he says. “Some of it involves looking at trends – what’s more popular this year. A lot of these are places that I’ve taken my family to check out and then we’ll use them on trips. We spend most of the year getting it all together, then it happens really fast, then it’s over.” The end of summer hardly means the end of the programming at the EEC; the start of the school year brings school programming. Classes from public and private schools throughout the area visit the W. Alton Jones campus for a variety of experiences. “Our school program is serving more children right now than we’ve ever served, so it’s more popular than ever,” Jacques explains. “The schools can come for anywhere from one day to five days. They come and they pick from a menu of programs so that they can match what they’re doing with their students in the classrooms to what they’ll be doing when they come out here.” “Early in the school year we find that a lot of schools want to do community building programs as part of their activities so that the students will be working better together as they go through their year,” Jacques adds. The Environmental Education Center at the University of Rhode Island’s W. Alton Jones campus is one of Rhode Island’s valuable establishments. It has served to educate and entertain generations of the state’s children, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Sapphires also are associated with romantic love, representing fidelity and romantic devotion. It also used for a quest to increase one’s faith, hope, and joy, and to keep thoughts pure and heavenly. Because of its symbolism, Prince Charles gave Princess Diana a Sapphire engagement ring, as did Prince William to Kate Middleton. Now more and more couples have decided to adopt this old tradition to the present day. Sapphire doesn’t stand for wild and fiery passion, rather for truth, compatibility, commitment, and mutual understanding. Sapphire is also recommended for a couple’s 5th or 45th anniversary.

Meet local do-gooders who are making southern Rhode Island a better place Photography by Melissa Stimpson

Prime Time Star Jenny Miller treats her clients like family “This is my passion,” says Jenny Miller, president and owner of East Greenwich’s Senior Care Concepts, a service that provides geriatric care management. She oversees the provision of a number of services to her clients, including long-term health care planning and acting as a liaison between seniors, their families and health care providers. Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and human development from Wheelock College and a master’s degree in social work and gerontology from Boston University. Her interest and passion for this field of work started from an early age and grew from a special relationship she shared with her grandmother. Miller started in the business early, volunteering in assisted living and nursing homes before receiving her degrees. Besides running her business, Miller belongs to the National and RI Association of Social Workers and the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers. She is also a member of the Rhode Island Alzheimer’s Association Board and a graduate of the 2008 Leadership RI program. Providence Business News named Miller one of the “Top 40 under 40” in 2009. Her most recent achievement is being voted as 2011 Social Worker of the Year in Aging by the RI chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Miller says of the national honor, “It’s humbling and it’s exciting when your peers are nominating you for this position.” Miller reiterates, “This is my passion. The last thing you want is someone who doesn’t care helping you.” In fact, the biggest compliment Miller believes she has received from her clients is when she is told by adult children that they were able to go back to being a son or daughter because of her help. She likes to describe herself and her employees as a “rent-a-daughter” or “rent-a-son” who take care of the details and use their skills and training to ease the difficult, and often time consuming and exhausting, transitions for both adult children and aging parents. When asked what she would say if she could share only one message with adult children who having aging parents, she responds thoughtfully: “There is help out there. You don’t have to do it alone. It is really important to be a son or daughter and get the professional assistance you need.” www.seniorcareconceptsinc.com -Kate Petterson

The Nurturer Kim McNiece is bringing new life to South County As a mother of three (ages seven, four and two), Kim McNiece knows a thing or two about children. But as the owner of Blessed Beginnings, a resource center for families before, during and after childbirth, she has seen and guided countless women through the experience. A birth doula and massage therapist who specializes in “mother massage,” McNiece provides emotional and physical support to families during a very special time in their lives. “Every single time I go to work as a doula, I’m being given this amazing opportunity to experience something that no one else has,” she explains. “It’s an amazing time – to meet the family first, to get to meet the baby on its birthday and to be with them after. There’s something so empowering and amazing to be there for that moment.” Besides facilitating healthy delivery of local babies, McNiece uses her company to help other people as well. “Every month, we try to do something that’s a sort of community outreach,” she says. “We try to get our cli-

ents involved. We’ve done $35 massages with a donation and we’ve done soldier care packages for soldiers overseas. We also have done a clothing swap where we donated 18-20 bags of clothes to the Johnnycake Center.” Blessed Beginnings also donates to organizations like the Matty Fund and the YMCA. On a more individual basis, the West Kingston resident works on a sliding scale for families in need of her services. “We also do some of our work pro bono for people who can’t afford it. We’re open to helping people as much as we can. If they need our services we want to help them.” She’s also working on setting up an inmate outreach program for pregnant women in prison. “Right now, as far as the prison system is concerned, if a woman is in labor, she’s transported to the hospital, but she has to be handcuffed the whole time. That’s not conducive to a healthy labor. We’re trying to volunteer there and be with those moms as best we can,” she says. While nurturing seems to be second nature to her, McNiece has a very personal reason for prioritizing service to others. “We only have a certain amount of time every day,” she explains. “If I’m trading my time with my kids, it has to be worth it. I need to be touching more people than just my clients. It needs to be bigger than that.” www.blessedbeginningsri.com -Julie Tremaine

Dog’s Best Friend Carol Terranova works to feed pets in need A retired middle school teacher who has spent many years volunteering her free time at local charities, Richmond’s Carol Terranova was looking for a new way to help the community when inspiration struck. “I knew I wanted to do something with animals,” she says. “It was November, and the Boy Scouts were doing their food drives. I thought, why not do a food drive for pets?” Her experience volunteering at the Hopkinton Animal Shelter, which she did part-time for a decade, put her in contact with a lot of pet owners who were forced to give up beloved animals because of economic hardship. “It was just heartbreaking,” Terranova describes. “There was no way they could keep their pets, and they were just in tears. The economy was so bad, and I knew there were people bringing pets in [to the shelter] because they couldn’t afford to keep them.” Thinking about that difficult situation inspired her to work to feed pets in need, and Maggie’s Pantry, the state’s first pet food bank, was born.

This month, the food bank will finish completion on its permanent home next to the Richmond Animal Shelter and near the town’s dog park. An open house on October 1, featuring free pet nail trimming from the Doggie Depot, will welcome the whole community (not just those who want to utilize the pantry) to see the new facility and, hopefully, contribute. “People have been really generous,” Terranova says. The Westerly Agway loaned her a shed to use as a temporary home for Maggie’s Pantry, a local bank held a bake sale, and supporters collaborated on a big fundraising yard sale. Also, she says, “The people who built [the shelter] are all friends of mine and they did it all on their own time. You can’t ask for more than that.” When she isn’t working on the food bank, Terranova and her yellow lab Maggie (the pantry’s namesake and a therapy dog) spend their time mentoring kids in reading skills – reading to the dog lowers kids’ stress levels and helps them gain confidence – and visiting the elderly at Greenwich Bay Nursing Home. “Some people don’t get to see anybody during the day,” she says. “Just spending a few minutes with the dog – it works wonders. The short time they’re there makes their whole day.” Maggie’s Pantry is located at 51 Buttonwoods Road in Richmond and is open Saturday mornings from 10am-12pm. To donate, get involved or get assistance, call Carol Terranova at home (539-3122) or on her cell phone (741-1596). –Julie Tremaine

Bud

The Self-Starter Bud McLeod brings people together for good causes “Who is Norman P. ‘Bud’ McLeod? A guy who likes to start new and exciting ventures.” So reads the title of Bud McLeod’s résumé for the past few years. McLeod is a resident of South Kingstown who has started several different organizations that have improved the quality of people’s lives. His most recent accomplishment is starting the first Leukemia and Lymphoma Caring and Sharing Circle in South County. Diagnosed with leukemia himself, McLeod has created the Circle, “not to defend those with leukemia but for them to defend themselves and share things they’ve learned about the disease.” The group is open to those going through treatment as well as family members of current patients and those who have lost loved ones. When asked where the drive to create this Circle came from, McLeod states simply, “I’m a starter.” Throughout his life he has been the sparkplug for a number of organizations and groups. In South County, this includes being

co-founder and first president of the Responsible Action Council of South Kingstown (a taxpayer support group), starting the first AARP Boomers Group in the country for people aged 50-64, creating the first area Fibromyalgia Support Group, being founder and first president of the South Kingstown Dog Park Association that opened a park year, as well as starting the first South County East Affiliate Group of the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition. He has also been a member of the AARP Rhode Island State Legislative Committee for eight years. When asked what he thinks about being tabbed as a community all-star, McLeod says that he doesn’t think of himself that way. A man who served in the military in the 1950s, he has a different idea of what a hero is. In terms of what he has accomplished with the organizations he has created he states, “I am so grateful to my talented support staff, without whom we would not have been so successful.” One member of that staff includes his wife, Louise, whom Bud cites as the achievement he is most proud of in his life. He displays his great sense of humor when sharing that he likes to call Louise “Weez” as a nickname and when people ask him if they are together, he responds, “Weez a team!” To learn more about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Caring and Sharing Circle, call Bud at 783-8852. –Kate Petterson

keeps history alive Roberta Mudge Humble and the Westerly Armory go way back. Humble, who grew up in Westerly, can remember going to poultry shows with her father when he would enter an “Old Trio” (two hens and a rooster for those of you unfamiliar with poultry contests). More than just poultry shows took place at the armory, which was built in 1902, after the first wooden armory burned down in 1899. The armory was and still is “an integral part of the town and the town’s history,” she says. It was used as more than just a place to store munitions and gather the militias and companies that would one day become a part of the National Guard. It has been a community center bringing people together for concerts, sporting events and contests. Today it still serves those functions, as well as being a museum. Humble, who has been the President of the Westerly Armory since 1992, has been a driving force in taking care of the building and keeping it running (although all board members aid in every aspect, including cleaning and cook-

ing for events). She has created several creative take-home board games, like Rhode Side and Rhode Trips, that have been successful fundraisers for the property. Most recently, Humble has helped win a restoration grant of $15,000 from The 1772 Foundation. When asked if she has a favorite memory or experience at the armory, Humble replies that she enjoys it when visitors share their memories of the place. Those memories bring back to life the past events and highlight how those events have fit into community members’ lives. Humble’s proudest achievement thus far has been the Education and Advocacy Award that she received from the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission in 2001. This award recognized her work at the Westerly Armory and showcased how it has raised awareness for other similar structures in Rhode Island. Outside of her work at the armory, Humble is involved with many organizations including the RI Council for the Humanities, the Naval War College Foundation and the Military Order of Foreign Wars. She is also an author and an English professor at the Community College of Rhode Island. When asked why she would recommend giving back to the community she states, “You’ve got to do for others outside of your family. It will fill your life and add a real depth to it.” www.westerlyarmory.org -Kate Petterson

A Coventry boutique makes little girls shine Pink, glitter and princesses: every little girl’s favorite things. Gigi’s Glitzy Boutique, with its pink walls, fairytale décor and myriad bows, tutus and other accessories and clothing, is designed exactly with them in mind. Beginning her business as an online venture, owner Angela Stanley opened up a bricks-and-mortar shop in Coventry earlier this summer. Stanley began handcrafting colorful bows, headbands and other accessories for her daughter Gianna (now almost four years old and the inspiration for the shop’s name) when she couldn’t find any inexpensive local shops that sold such items. Impressed by her daughter’s cute and creative adornments, friends encouraged Stanley to sell her unique pieces to locals. After gaining a following in the area, Stanley took her business to the web to expand her reach. “My local customers were following me from craft show to craft show and constantly asking, ‘Why don’t you have a store?’” she recalls. “It was always a dream and a goal of mine to have a store before the end of our first year in business.” With a lot of determination and no financial assistance, Gigi’s was born. The one-of-a-kind shop features Stanley’s innovative designs, as well as the products of other local and national children’s designers, such as Ruffle Butts, Mudpie, Ann Loren, Haute Baby and others. Gigi’s also carries an adorable line of ties and hats for boys. A few items, such as a charming collection of crocheted and knit baby and toddler hats from Shilo’s Gifts and Notions and a line of headbands and wipe cases from Leidy’s Pretties, are crafted by local moms. Stanley notes, “I had many local stores help me out when I was a

struggling, stay-at-home mom trying to get my name out there. So it’s my turn to return the favor!” Outside her shop, you can find a selection of Stanley’s creative designs at local craft shows, such as the Rhode Island Children’s Consignment Show, the Scituate Art Festival, Gaspee Days and at local elementary schools. It is at these events that Stanley discovers many of the new designers to feature in her store. “I am very picky about what comes into the store; it has to be something different that I don’t make or already carry,” she explains.

What’s the story of Adare’s? Adare is a town in Ireland where my husband proposed to me 22 years ago in a rose garden in front of the Adare Manor. We love the town so much; it holds a special place in our hearts. We named our first-born son Cullen Adare. When I opened my online boutique six years ago, the name was just a natural. I modeled it after an Irish cottage, from the flowers boxes on the porch to the many cozy rooms. The only thing missing is the thatched roof. Who are some of your designers? We are always on the lookout for new and unique designers. One of the comments that we hear most is how unique all of our items are and how you don’t see items like this anywhere else. Sorrelli is our best selling jewelry line. It’s a very extensive line with at least 12 new colors that come out every year, but we also carry designers such as Otazu, Barbara Garwood, Detra Kay, Michal Golan, Mariana and Sarah Cavender. For our clothing lines we carry a large selection of Sympli, Lee Andersen, Samuel Dong, Johnny Was and Art of Cloth. What are some trends this fall? The ‘70s bohemian and ‘70s sophisti-

cated glamour looks will be back this fall. We are carrying a great line of bohemian tie-dye tunics from Boho Chic. Look for thin pencil skirts and vintage tapestry tops from Samuel Dong, plunging necklines, wide leg pants and lots of pleats and floral motifs. What are some of your unique items? Our most unique items would have to be our Lee Andersen line of clothing. It’s called “wearable art” and if you have ever seen any of her pieces you can see why. I pretty much guarantee if you walk into a room wearing a Lee Andersen outfit you will be attracting a lot of attention. So what’s going on at your boutique in September? We have fall and holiday fashions and jewelry rolling in on a daily basis, but we still have a lot of great end of summer fashions on sale. Our first Ladies’ Night in July was a great success and we plan on holding another one in September to highlight all of our new fall and holiday fashions and jewelry. bara describes her collaboration with Debbie as “easy” and “fun” in what was otherwise a stressful situation. Barbara adds that working with Debbie was especially helpful as they were managing the project remotely. According to the designer, modern technology is what made the project move forward nearly seamlessly. “Barbara and Earl were very helpful by sending me measurements and photos of what they wanted to use from their existing home,” Debbie explains. “I then had to delete some things while trying to fit items they had sentiment towards into their new home. The pieces didn’t always go where they had in mind, but we found another area of the house where they did work.” Not everything found a new home, and some pieces had to abandon ship, but the most precious made the cut. For Barbara, Debbie also served as an editor when it came to narrowing down what existing pieces complemented their new space and where to find newer pieces that fit the coastal design scheme. The designer was also instrumental in guiding the couple when it came to paint colors, as they wanted multiple hues throughout with an agreeable, cohesive feel. “Color was also a big issue for us, as we didn’t want a monochromatic look throughout the house,” explains Barbara. “[Debbie] helped us with color

that go into building a home.” The couple turned to Bob Amitrano of Heritage Homes in nearby Saunderstown to create their coastal home based not only on the company’s enviable reputation, but on the general sense that they were all on the same page. “Fred [Schick] and Bob [Amitrano] had many initial meetings with us to iron out as many of the details as possible,” she explains. Throughout the building process, Heritage made themselves available to the couple whenever the two were in town, including visiting the job site and assisting with the many choices that had to be made. This meant frequent Saturday or Sunday morning meetings with them in all types of weather – whatever it took to get things done. At times, Barbara concedes, it was difficult to stay organized and on top of the myriad details of the homebuilding process, but it’s a familiar sentiment shared among anyone who has built a home from the ground up. To help facilitate design decisions, the couple enlisted the help of interior designer Debbie DeCristofaro, a RISD alum whose DeCristo Design Studio is based in Narragansett. “As we began to work with Debbie, she integrated herself into our family; she learned about us and what we found pleasing,” says Earl. “From there we were able to move forward to the actual process of choosing color, artwork and furniture.” Bar-

When a career opportunity lured Barbara and Earl Jackman to New Jersey more than 20 years ago, they never fully let go of the Ocean State in their hearts. So when the two began planning a return to their roots, the search began for the perfect piece of Rhode Island property. “We knew we wanted to live in Narragansett,” Barbara explains. Specifically, the couple was looking for a quiet neighborhood that also offered easy highway access for trips to points north and south. “We actually fell upon this property quite by accident, never having known the West Passage existed,” she says. With an enchanting coastal panorama and views of both the Jamestown and Newport bridges and Dutch Island, they knew they had found the right, if unexpected, locale. “All that and the fact that this property had such spectacular views made us realize this was the location for our home,” adds Earl. As anyone who has embarked on the adventure of building a house will tell you, from-scratch construction comes with its own unique set of challenges. In the Jackmans’ case, those trials were compounded by a couple hundred miles. “The biggest challenge for me was the constant travel from New Jersey, where we were living at the time, to Rhode Island at least every other weekend,” says Barbara. “When we were in town, there were so many choices to be made about the hundreds of decisions

selection, and as a result the multiple room colors complement one another well and flow with seamless continuity throughout our home.” The Jackmans describe their personal style as a cross between traditional and casual elegance, but they were also committed to allowing both the layout and design complement its surroundings. “We wanted a home that was functional and that would be comfortable whether we had local family visiting for a day or friends from out of state visiting for a long weekend,” explains Earl. “The design of the house allows visitors to have whatever level of privacy they choose, while enjoying the Narragansett lifestyle.” The two have quickly made the house a home, and each have identified their favorite area to relax and unwind. For Barbara, it’s the kitchen and living room in which she feels most at home. “I love to cook and when I entertain, the open spaces in this area allow me to spend time with family and friends during the food preparation,” she says. “Also, we’ve designed the kitchen so that several people can

be working at one time without getting in one another’s way, a feature my sisters appreciate!” For Earl, coastal living is serving him well. “I enjoy the deck for family gatherings in the summer, as well as a cold drink and occasional cigar at the end of a long day,” he adds. “However, the sitting room off the master suite on a clear night with a full moon over the bay and the bridge offers a spectacular view.” Having gone through the process and come out the other side, the couple is able to look back with an insightful eye and evaluate what worked – and what didn’t. “The best advice I could give a potential homebuilder would be to spend a lot of time on preplanning and design, which we did and which eliminated most construction issues,” advises Earl. “The builders’ knowledge, skill and ability allowed them to anticipate potential areas of concern. As a result, there were very few major changes to our original design.” Barbara agrees, adding, “The last piece of advice is to make decisions and commit to them; don’t try to second guess yourself.”

Edible Discoveries A taste of new dining and drinking This summer we revisited Red Stripe in Narragansett, now under new management with a revised menu. For starters, we recommend the Cajun Scallop Soup with its slight kick of spice and scallion garnish. The salads are quite good, especially the Salmon Baby Spinach Salad with blue cheese, walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette, and the Cobb Salad with plenty of chicken, hard-boiled egg, bacon, blue cheese and avocado. We were impressed with the Veal Parmigiana and very pleased with the Filet and Mango Grilled Shrimp. This creative surf-and-turf dish starred a grilled filet mignon and barbecued shrimp with smashed potatoes and summer vegetables. Inside Red Stripe, it was cool and relaxing. Outside on the flower-filled patio, it was hot, hot, hot – the place to be on a late summer evening when live music fills the air. My other discovery this summer has been Acaiberri, the antioxidant elixir of life that’s bottled here in Rhode Island by two brothers, Angelo and David Aiello. They don’t want to make any unsubstantiated health claims, but they do believe there are dozens of reasons why people should try their drink. Some call it “a new fountain of youth.” It’s available at natural health food stores, Dave’s Marketplace in East Greenwich and Roch’s Market in Narragansett. Acaiberri is a blend of juices, extracts and purees from around the world, beginning with the acai berry, which is found only in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. The original formula has the flavors of pomegranate, blueberry, cranberry, prune and grape. Acaiberri Plus also contains Glucosamine. The new Cobalt formula is made with Patagonian wild berry, black raspberry and yum berry from China – pretty exotic stuff, and reportedly loaded with life-enhancing benefits. Anti-aging, energy boosting, and great for the immune system: what’s not to like? I’ve been having a shot of the Acaiberri Cobalt every morning after breakfast. One ounce is all you need. It’s so potent, I add an equal amount of ice-cold water. After a month, I felt that I was experiencing more energy and stamina, less stress, better sleep and a reduced appetite. Acaiberri can also be used in smoothies and cocktails, or poured over ice cream

or yogurt. Hmmm… I think I’ll whip up an Acaiberri Martini. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ The Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company at 4 Brown Street in Wickford is the result of a family’s passion for California olive oil. The Gregoire family opened the shop in late May. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and on Sunday from 11am to 5pm. The shop specializes in pungent, fruity and fresh extra virgin olive oils that you can taste before buying. Italian vinegars and giftware are also sold. Check out the web site www.nboliveoil.com for some delicious recipes that utilize specialty EVOO. RESTAURANT NEWS Main Street Coffee and Toscana Lounge on Main Street in East Greenwich is expanding its bar area. Owner Steve Cinquegrana opened the coffee shop in 2003, then added the bar in 2006. With the additional room, there will be space for five more people at the bar, plus new seating for another seven or eight peo-

ple. Cinquegrana says the expansion is in response to customer demand and an effort to grow his business. Thai Pepper at 249 Main Street in South Kingstown is now called Luk Thai. Payao Schmidt, the new owner of this BYOB establishment, plans to retain much of the old menu. That Narragansett landmark, Twin Willows at 865 Boston Neck Road, has been given permission by the town to open an outdoor bar, which will offer a sweeping view of Bonnet Shores and Narragansett Bay. Smoothy Booty was forced to close when it lost its space at 213 Robinson Street in Wakefield. Owner Bart Shumaker plans to reopen in a new location next spring. The Commons Convenience store at South County Commons now offers meals-to-go prepared by Chef Paul Comorosky. Every week two entrees are available, usually seafood, chicken or pasta, all made with local ingredients and most costing less than $10. The menu is posted in the store and on its Facebook page. A mobile food truck has come to Narragansett. Eddie’s BBQ offers ribs, pulled pork and chicken, as well as vegetarian dishes prepared by Chef Steve McLaughlin. The roving truck stops in local parking lots and serves for a few hours, and then moves on. Boon Street Diner at 148 Boon Street in Narragansett has reopened after being damaged by a fire. Breakfast and lunch are served on weekdays from 6am to 3pm, and dinner (fish and chips, chowder, fish specials and chicken dishes) is available until 9pm on the weekend. I’ve saved the best bit of news for last: the Duke is back! David “Duke” Deery is cooking every weekend at Riptide restaurant in the Grinnell Inn, 83 Narragansett Avenue in Narragansett. We’ve been fans of Duke’s creative cuisine for years, going all the way back to Duke’s of Middlebridge. Since then, Duke has been at Crazy Burger and the Fantastic Umbrella Factory. Riptide serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu that features burgers, salads and wraps. If you have news dealing with food, restaurants or chefs, feed it to Linda Beaulieu at Lindab2720@aol.com.

Family Tradition David Gravino on a Narragansett classic Why is Iggy’s such an institution? We are the oldest beach stand in Rhode Island; the stand has been around since 1924. Our comfort food is unique to the state, and we have three or four generations of families that come here. People who came here as kids now come with their families.

Photography: Amy Amerantes

Can you explain the origin of the name? When we were young, our father’s license plate was IG-6, so we used to call him Iggy. When we had to come up with a name, I suggested Iggy’s. What makes the fried seafood and doughboys so popular? Everything is cooked to order, so nothing sits around. The batter and dough used in our doughboys and clamcakes is made every half hour or hour. We use the best quality products and the freshest of ingredients. Our clams are fresh, not from a can. The technology we use is incredible: our fryolaters self-clean, and we use cholesterol-free oil that has zero trans fat. We also don’t mix any products; everything has its own fryolator - the fish, french fries, etc. Are there any cardinal rules to making clam cakes – a perfect clam-toclam cake ratio, perhaps? It’s about fresh ingredients and the fact that we are constantly making products

all day. Our clam cake batter is filled with small, light-colored fresh clams. Our chowders have no water; they are made with just clams and clam juice.

Join us for this unique, fun event at the Regatta Place on Goat Island, Newport. Experience distinctive microbrews, exquisite wines, rare rums, tantalizing tequilas, delectable martinis and delicious cuisine!

Pregnancy and Postpartum Sleep Research Study We are seeking pregnant women to participate in a research study of sleep during pregnancy and the postpartum period. You must be 18-40 years old and have a history of depression or bipolar disorder.

People generally talk about a restaurant like yours for the clam cakes and chowder. What is the most underrated item on the Iggy’s menu? We have some great grill items, like the Famous Iggy Burger with sauteed peppers and onions, and the steak and cheese. What’s your chowder of choice: Rhode Island, Manhattan or New England? I like them all, but my favorite is probably Rhode Island chowder. It’s simple and has a strong clam broth; it’s not mixed with other ingredients, like tomatoes. Anything we should know about this month? Our Warwick store is open year-round, but our Narragansett store closes after Columbus Day. Sign up for our email club on www.iggysdoughboys.com. You get six free doughboys, a free dinner on your birthday and great coupons with our newsletter. We also sell clothing, collectibles and food items, like our clam cake batter, on our website. David Gravino owns Iggy’s Doughboys, 1159 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 783-5608, www.iggysdoughboys.com

The Beach Goes Upscale Fine dining comes to the Charlestown Breachway house burgers and sandwiches to New York-style pizza to entrees that include traditional South County fare as well as upscale creative dishes. Whole belly fried clams always tempt me, but so did the Pork Chop Scarpiello and the Chicken Malibu. The thick center-cut pork chop is topped with hot cherry and sweet bell peppers in a white wine reduction. The grilled chicken breast gets a whole new flavor profile with the addition of smoked ham, melted provolone cheese and a creamy pico sauce. After much thought and a glass of chardonnay, we both decided we were in the mood for seafood. Brian gave the Chowda and Clam Cakes ($6.95) a try, the perfect prelude to the Baked Scrod ($15). Six toasty brown clam cakes arrived on a large square plate, drizzled with chipotle mayonnaise. The New England-style chowder was the better half of this dish. Served in an oversized cup, it was on the thin side but packed with chopped clams, nicely cooked chunks of potato and plenty of that ocean flavor. The scrod – we couldn’t tell if it was cod or haddock, but we were assured it was locally caught – was a generous serving in an au gratin dish. Topped with fresh breadcrumbs, the pearly white fish was baked with butter, lemon juice and white wine, adding subtle flavor

Special BLT Lobster Roll without masking the fresh fish taste. Both of our entrees were served with rice and sautéed spinach. The rice was pretty basic, but all that was needed as a backdrop to the fish. The spinach, mixed with a julienne of sun-dried tomatoes, was a refreshing change of pace from the usual vegetable medley offered at so many restaurants. I was drawn to the Bacci ($7), a salad I would probably order again and again. A whole head of baby iceberg lettuce – which is soft and buttery compared to the usual iceberg lettuce – was split and spread open to fill an entire large plate. The lettuce was topped with just the right amount of freshly cooked bacon, crumbled blue cheese and blue cheese dressing. An excellent salad, it was garnished with perfectly ripe grape tomatoes. My Salmon a l’Orange ($17) was nearly as perfect. The thick cut of wild Atlantic salmon was pan fried and glazed with a mixture of orange and agave nectar, flavors that burst open on the palate. Desserts ($4.95 each) are from Bindi International, known for its frozen concoctions found in many Rhode Island restaurants. The Cappuccino Truffle was a soft, coffee-flavored mousse with a slightly crunchy topping, and quite small – three bites and it was gone. The Key Lime

Cheesecake was more substantial, a round serving of tart sweetness, garnished with fresh blueberries. There were a few bumps in the road: our waitress first brought me the Portobello Sammie instead of the salmon that I ordered – an honest mistake. Sammie (which is a small sandwich) does sound a bit like salmon. I ended up eating the salmon when Brian was quite done with his entree. She also never brought me the water I requested. The Breachway Grill is a great summer spot, and they hope to stay open year-round. While there aren’t many beach days in the fall, it’s well worth the off season trip. It was a quintessential late summer evening, and we were motoring along the back roads that lead from Route 1 to the ocean, down through Matunuck and Moonstone Beach. We were in search of the Breachway Grill, a new restaurant near the Charlestown Breachway. Spotting the sign, we realized it is one of those, “Oh, yeah… this used to be…” locations. In the past, it was nothing fancy: shabby chic with a Key West vibe. That night the parking lot was nearly full, yet we were still skeptical. The entrance was the same, but once we stepped inside, everything beyond was shockingly different, and all for the better. The look is now thoroughly modern, from the sleek bar to the contemporary lighting. Soft yellow and sage green are the interior colors. As cool and inviting as that was, we headed to the patio for a night of al fresco dining. A black wrought iron fence encloses the large patio area, with a variety of tables in play – some are industrial-strength metal while others are old-fashioned wooden picnic tables. Brightly colored market umbrellas provide shade, much needed if you stop in for lunch on a hot day. You’d have to visit the Breachway Grill a dozen times before you’d get to taste all that is offered, from steak-

September FROM PREVIOUS PAGE September 2-4 Indeed, there’s a certain appeal to studying abroad that goes beyond the obvious incentive of living parentfree in a country where the unofficial drinking age hovers around 12. The truth is, when else in life do you have the time or opportunity to uproot and completely immerse yourself in anything? The Rhythm & Roots Festival aims to recreate the experience. Granted, you’re far too set in your ways to share your expensive hair products, nevermind a bedroom, with the seven children of a host family. But a weekend basking in the syncopation and subtleties of zydeco and Cajun sounds, spread over four stages, with a line-up that includes Richard Thompson, Marcia Ball, Magnolia, Delbert McClinton and Steve Earle and the Dukes and Duchesses is more than doable. September 2: 5pm-midnight; September 3-4: noon-midnight. $35 Friday only; $60/day, $145 entire weekend. Ninigret Park, 4813 Old Post Road, Charlestown. 888-855-6940, www.rhythmandroots. com September 1 Replace the images of silk pajamas and 1970s Burt Reynolds mustaches you’d normally associate with the moniker Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, with the blur of fast fingers working the accordion and fiddle, to create the sounds of Cajun French music straight out of Louisiana. 7-10pm. $20. The Towers, 35 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 782-2597, www.thetowersri.com September 2 Understand that while there’s no formal dress code in effect to hear the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra perform their Summer’s End Concert with vocalist John Pagano, wrapping yourself in a Snuggie is discouraged. Thursday-Saturday: 8pm; Sunday: 2pm. $18, $15 ages 62 plus, $11 children. The Granite Theatre, One Granite Street, Westerly. 5962341, www.granitetheatre.com September 10 Flip through that ginormous parenting handbook and discover that there’s a thing or two that maybe shouldn’t go quite as trial and error or DIY as a little hair cut, then allow naturopathic doctor and mom Keri Layton to assist with Navigating Childhood Vaccinations. 10am-noon. $18. Go Native September 24-25: You probably want to start your reconnaissance mission about a month before the Swamp Yankee Festival, ‘cause in these parts, it’s easy to pick out a stranger in town. You’ve got to blend in gradually, so as not to draw any attention. Stop by the local coffee shop about the same time every day and indulge in a piece of pie with a dab of whipped cream. Once you have the trust of the friendliest waitress, it’s time to start asking questions. Where do the cows live? How much do they eat? Who feeds them? It’s the only hope you’ve got to win the cow chip bingo game. If nobody’s talking, you’ll just have to be satisfied with taking a hay ride, making a scarecrow, painting a pumpkin or watching the antique tractor parade. 10am-dusk. Free. Seven simple ways to forget summer Feel a chill in the air? Don’t despair! Put summer in the rear view mirror and rev your engine for fall. The stages of southern Rhode Island offer scads of entertaining ways to help you embrace the changing seasons. Here are seven to get you started. Tickle your funny bone with the Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant’s production of Let’s Murder Marsha (now through-October 9). Directed by Henryce Zannini, the play pits a highly suspicious housewife against her well-meaning husband. After reading one too many murder mysteries, she becomes convinced that the surprise he’s planning for her is her demise. Bring your appetite to enjoy the preshow buffet, and stick around for the post-show cabaret. 102 Connell Highway, Newport. 848-7529, www. newportplayhouse.com Scale The 39 Steps (September 9-18) to find spies, surprises, kisses, near misses and laugh-out-loud lunacy. South County’s resident masters of the musical at Theatre by the Sea mount a straight comedy to close their summer season. Combining elements of the classic Hitchcock film and the original 1915 novel, the Broadway hit follows an innocent man on a frantic flight from the long arm of the law. See a nimble cast of four play more than a hundred characters! 364 Cards Pond Road, Matunuck. 7828587, www.theatrebythesea.com At the Granite Theatre this fall, learn why Men Are Dogs (September 9-October 2). This comedy revolves around a female psychologist who, in an experimental move, hires a man to role-play with her patients in group therapy. Only problem? Said patients are single, divorced and hilariously hostile women. This guy is in for a real treat – as are you. 1 Granite Street, Westerly. 596-2341, www.granitetheatre.com Snap, clap and rap along with The Wedding Singer (September 15-18), a musical comedy inspired by the Adam Sandler film and presented by Academy Players of East Greenwich. Can true love find a way through ‘80sstyle music, hairdos and costumes? It

Men Are Dogs at Granite Theatre can, and it’s totally tubular. Plus, stay tuned for news of a special fundraiser performance with the Cranston Arc on September 7, in which audience members get to play wedding guests. Academy Players at Bishop Hendricken High School, 2615 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. 885-6910, www.academyplayers.net See contemporary ballet dancers salute Newport in Island Moving Company’s Open for Dancing (September 21-25). Site-specific new works feature innovative choreography against bold backdrops like the gardens at Bellevue House, the casements at Fort Adams and the Yew Forest at the Norman Bird Sanctuary. With live musicians and both professional and community dancers, the performances are free and fabulous. 847-4470, www.islandmovingco.org Just in time for Halloween, scare yourself silly with Marat/Sade (October 13-23) at URI. The shocking show by German playwright Peter Weiss is officially titled The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction

of the Marquis De Sade. Infused with the spirit of the French Revolution and inspired by historical events – the late Marquis spent years in the same insane asylum, where he was encouraged to write and direct plays – the production is designed to startle you out of your seat. J Studio, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston. 874-5843, www.uri.edu/theatre Dust off your knowledge of Ancient Greek mythology and take a fresh look at Eurydice (October 2129). Presented by the Contemporary Theater Company, this lovely and lyrical work by award-winning playwright and Brown grad Sarah Ruhl casts new light on the story of Orpheus’ bride. After her untimely death, Eurydice descends to the underworld where – in Ruhl’s version – she reunites with her father. Her groom struggles to return her to the land of the living, while she grapples with an even harder decision. My name is Clark and I am 7 years old. Until recently, I was roaming the streets of Ohio. A concerned citizen found me and contacted the Save A Lab Rescue which found a temporary home for me with a loving foster family in Rhode Island. My family interviewed many who wanted to adopt me, including The Seasons assisted living community in East Greenwich, which had been searching for just the right dog for the past 6 months. You see, in September, 2010, their adored black lab Boomer, had passed away from cancer leaving quite a void in the lives of the residents and staff. Arrangements were made for me to visit The Seasons. When I walked through the front door I knew this would be my new home. Residents and staff were so welcoming. Lots of smiling faces and lots of beautiful, spacious common areas and outside grounds for me to explore. I was sold! So I moved into The Seasons in May and I couldn’t be happier or better cared for. I am now part of a large, loving family. I invite you to stop by and meet me. I’ll be the one with some gray around my snout and a wagging tail.

Beach Blast September 16-18: For the first time ever, the Misquamicut Business Association hosts the Misquamicut Fall Fest, incorporating all of our favorite aspects of summer: sand, sun and music. The September 16-18 event begins on Friday night with a performance by The Classic Rock All Stars, followed by a world-class fireworks display. The rest of the weekend boasts continuous music by The Knack, Blues Image, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf and Blue Oyster Cult, non-stop family fun and a slew of other events. A ferris wheel is accompanied by other kiddy rides and games, as well as a petting zoo, pony rides, a marine touch tank and obstacle course, all guaranteed to keep the kids happy all day long. If the music line-up or children’s activities don’t satisfy your appetite, maybe the 25 New England food vendors or the local beers at the Beer and Wine Garden might. The event will be held at Misquamicut State Beach. Admission is $5, parking is $3, and children under the age of three get in for free. 257 Atlantic Avenue, Westerly. 654-6663, www.misquamicutfestival. org -Nathaniel Fuller

Brother and sister duo Kevin and Christen Langevin

Ready to Rock A brother-and-sister team turns sidewalk surfing into art They are known as “sidewalk surfers” in places such as California, and now they seem to be multiplying and taking over the serene streets of Rhode Island. Skateboard creators/ designers and lifelong residents of Matunuck, Kevin Langevin and his sister Christen Langevin refer to them as little “groms.” In skateboard lingo, this translates to young, beginner skateboarders who can “rip” and “tear it up.” With help from these two creative minds, that’s just what they’ll do. Residing in the Mary Carpenters Beach Meadows community, the area in which their mother’s family came to live during the 1930s, the two have always been true Rhode Islanders. Kevin and Christen decided to combine and develop their artistic ways late last year with the Rock Reef Skate Co. A finish carpenter by trade, Kevin uses his woodworking skills to create various styles of long boards and skateboards, while Christen flexes her artistic ability by outlining, stenciling and wood-burning the faces into the boards. She then applies nautical designs and colors to the finished shapes, or any other designs that ask for specific customization. The pair tends to gravitate toward designs that resemble elements of Rhode Island. “Down by the beach,

where the salt air blows, that’s where it all comes from,” Kevin declares. Their team effort seems to be working quite well, as Kevin remarks, “Being brother and sister, it’s nice to work collaboratively. Making the boards takes a little bit of know-how and her artistic ability takes a little bit of know-how, so I wouldn’t be able to do it without her.” Kevin and Christen typically create three- and four-foot boards and carry four different shapes in both sizes. They prefer to use seven-ply Baltic birch wood when making the threefooters and 13-ply for the four-footers. (They also offer other hardwood plywood such as bamboo, cherry and mahogany.) Kevin explains, “We use the birch because when you finish, the grain comes out of the wood and really gives a three-dimensional effect to our boards. You can see it on both the top and bottom faces.” The duo also works sand from Rhode Island beaches into the finish of every board. As Kevin says, “It doesn’t get any more ‘so Rhode Island’ than us.” For more information you may contact Kevin Langevin at 290-8226 or via email at kdogmtk@gmail.com or become a fan of Rock and Reef Skate Co. on Facebook.

This substantial cookie won over our staff after the first bite. Filled with large pieces of chocolate peanut butter cups and peanut butter chips, this cookie aims to please, and achieves it. Topped with a nice sprinkle of sugar, this is the cookie of choice for any peanut butter lover. 3362 Kingstown Rd., West Kingston. 284-0501, www.tlccoffeeroasters.com
