KENNETH COTE RENEWAL CENTER Our Haircuts Begin With Ears, Not Shears
Hi, I’m Kenneth Cote. For over 34 years my staff and I have listened to your needs and done our best to exceed your expectations. We firmly believe that good listeners give the best haircuts. Why? Because at Kenneth Cote, every appointment begins with a consultation. We’ll listen to your likes and dislikes, ask you pertinent questions about your styling habits and goals, we’ll make our suggestions and together we’ll design a haircut, color or treatment that works best for you. Beautiful, healthy hair and a hairstyle that works for you is the foundation of everything we do and we’ll always provide you with affordable, healthy alternatives to help you look and feel your very best.
The 14 Questions You MUST Ask Your Hairstylist How many times have you had your hair cut and spent the entire appointment talking about your job, kids, spouse or celebrity gossip? Besides being a skilled professional who can give you a great haircut or haircolor, your stylist at Kenneth Cote is a goldmine of information and you’re cheating yourself if you don’t get the most out of your appointment. Here’s my advice for questions you should be asking your hairstylist.
Before the cut:
1. Will this work with my hair type? 2. Will this flatter my face shape? 3. Will this work with my skin tone? 4. What sort of maintenance will this require? 5. What can I expect to pay in order to maintain this style and/or haircolor? 6. Are there other options?
During the cut:
7. What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend? 8. How often should I wash and condition my hair?
After the cut:
9. What styling products should I use? 10. How much product should I use? 11. How and where should I apply them? 12. What styling tools should I use? 13. What other ways can I style my hair? 14. How often should I come back to maintain the style?
How To Find The Right Hairstyle For Your Face Shape When you visit my staff or me for a haircut, a crucial element in our style consultation is “reading” your face shape. We know that certain hairstyles flatter certain face shapes while other hairstyles can camouflage less-flattering features. Based on my experience, here are some of my suggestions to help you know which hairstyle will be most flattering for you.
So the next time you get your hair cut or colored, ask these questions and you’ll discover that knowledge is the key to keeping your hair looking great between salon visits.

OVAL: This shape is ideal because there are no detracting flaws or features to correct. Since you can wear almost any style, focus on complementing skin tone and eye color with age-appropriate haircolor. ROUND: We’ll try to create an illusion of length by drawing attention to the top of your head and/or leading the eye slightly off center with the shape of the haircut and haircolor. SQUARE: We have two options. We can either go short to accentuate your angular features or go a bit fuller and soften hard lines with soft edges for a less edgy look. TRIANGLE: We’ll soften the effect of the forehead while creating an illusion of width around the chin by partially covering the forehead with hair and accentuating it with color to brighten and lighten.

PEAR: Our goal with this face shape is to create width in the forehead and cheekbones. We’ll style your hair full on top and use color and highlights to attract the eye upward. ELLIPSE: We’ll “shorten” your long face by keeping hair close at the top, full at the sides and a bit longer.

Letters From the Editor Unless you’re unusually industrious or unusually lucky when it comes to free time, you probably don’t put hours of preparation into your average home-cooked dinner. Not so at this time of year. The holidays are your best excuse to spend some extra time in the kitchen to really get
creative, and the best way to show off your culinary skills. Not blessed with Julia Child’s epicurean sensibilities? We can help. This month, local cookbook authors give us their own seasonally-inspired recipes that are perfect for any holiday table. Read on, and then get cooking. -Julie
From Our Readers An All-Star Salute I was very proud to have been selected by you to be a part of the cover story (“Community All-Stars”) in your September issue. While I have received a number of complimentary calls relating to it, perhaps my best commentary came from a high school classmate named Luke, who said, “Most people don’t get nice things like this written about them until their obituary.” Kate Petterson’s coverage was complete, upbeat and helpful for spousal relationships hereabouts. Melissa Stimpson clicked a lot of shutters, and she managed to end up with a good cover shot. Of course, the winning shot was on page 35. I used to be a professional photo model for five
years in Cleveland, Ohio doing both stylish and character poses. Keep up the good work. SO there! Bud McLeod

And On His Farm He Had A… A local woodworker applies his trade to playtime
Photography: Marylou Butler
Are you looking for an alternative to beeping electronic gadgets and cheap plastic doo-dads to give your children for playtime? Gentleman farmer and custom woodworker Eric Cook Swanson has the answer for you. Swanson can build a house, make custom cabinets and create fine furniture, but his favorite thing to do is make children’s wooden toys. In the workshop at his home and farm in Matunuck, he crafts animals, barns, picket fences and accessories like spinning wheels and farm tools. He uses all natural materials, including local native hardwoods, leather and fiber. All the toys are handmade one at a time and natural, non-toxic finishes are used on the wood so that all his creations are safe for children to handle. Swanson, a RISD graduate, shares his farm with a herd of small sheep, chickens, a few cows and a goat named Horatio. “If I ever have a question about how one of the toys should look I just go out into the fields and check out the animals,” he says. The sheep are among the best selling toys and come wrapped in real wool. He also has a popular billy goat that sports a piece of rawhide for a beard. The farmhouse and barn allow kids that old fashioned type of play – using their imaginations. Stock the barn with pigs, horses or an oxen-pulled cart and place the whimsical barn cat in the hayloft to chase the tiny mice. Set the farmer to work pushing the wheelbarrow or mending the split rail fence. These

durable toys will survive the hours of play to become treasured heirlooms to hand down to future generations. Contact Swanson for an appointment to visit his workshop or request a custom order at calfpasture@gmail.com. Orders can be placed through his website, www.calfpasturetoys.com, or on his Etsy page www.calfpasturetoys.etsy.com. –Marylou Butler

Put It Down on Paper There is no better feeling than getting a handwritten letter or card from a loved one. It seems to be a lost sensation in a world where email, texting and social media websites are the preferred method of communication. Joshua Vizzaco, a RISD graduate born in Westerly and raised in Coventry, is the designer of a beautiful line of stationery, greeting cards and journals called Joshua Graham. The artist says that he wanted to create something that would motivate writing, exploration of thought, inspiring relationships and creativity. This line is a combination of original designs and imaginative photography printed on eco-friendly materials and made with 100% certified renewable energy. The artist himself handcrafts the collection, which is printed locally; in fact, all of his partners in this venture are local, as he sees the value of utilizing resources close to home. Each of the items has a distinct artistic feel with a nice mix of designs to suit anyone’s taste; they are stylish, sophisticated and charming. Vizzaco says, “We are looking for forgotten methods of social engagement and reintroducing them with modernity.” The line is currently for sale online at www.shopjoshuagraham.com. -Samantha Gaus November 2011 | SO RHODE ISLAND

A Legacy of Land A great Rhode Island artist leaves behind more than just his work By Bob Cipriano • Photography by Hilary Block
A legacy may not
be all that difficult a concept for a successful artist. When renowned painter Maxwell Mays was in his 80s at the turn of this century, he could count on his paintings forever gracing the walls of collectors, museums and families. But Mays had something else to consider: 295 acres in Coventry that were his personal refuge, a serene stretch of woods where he gathered his thoughts, strength and inspiration. One of his quotes from this period is, “I would like this land to stay open. I would like this land to breathe.” Having spent his entire life in Rhode Island – interrupted only by a World War II stint in Brazil and, later, travels to exhibitions of his paintings in New York City and elsewhere – he wanted more than his art to endure. The land that was his source for so much inspiration was alive, and could go on living if left in the right hands. To bequeath his land to the peo-

ple of Rhode Island and keep it truly open, he needed a partner. His vision for his land found a good match in the Audubon Society. “We were singing a similar tune,” says Larry Taft, execu-
tive director of Audubon. The result? The Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge, 2082 Victory Highway (Route 102) in Coventry, which opened last month.
Mays and the Audubon began their relationship by setting up a life estate for him in 2001, which allowed the artist to live on the land for the remainder of his life. After Mays died, in November 2009, the Audubon began to develop his property’s rustic trails for more human traffic and restore the historic farm buildings, including an 18th century farmhouse Mays used as an art studio and guesthouse. With the help of grants from the Champlain Foundation, and a lot of strong arms from the Narragansett chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club, a beautiful system of trails and several restored farm buildings now flourish. They make this, the Audubon’s sixteenth public wildlife refuge in Rhode Island, a unique site with a special vibe from the artist whose name it bears. It’s open dawn till dusk, seven days a week. There are plans in place for seasonal nature hikes to identify the
refuge’s birds and butterflies. Crosscountry skiing is a natural along the trails. Take a peek at the Audubon’s website, www.asri.org, for more specifics on this exceptional new site and all their other sites in South County. If you’ve walked among the trees, rocks, shrubs and creatures of any of the Audubon’s wildlife refuges, you
understand terms like tranquility and inspiration. If you haven’t, the Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge is a great place to start. An artist, a conservationist, a popular storyteller and speaker, Maxwell Mays is a Rhode Island legend whose status is rooted in these woods. Walk his trails. Dip into his inspiration. Come up full.

Grapes and Gourmet
is a hybrid of first class stores blending cooking, entertaining, wine and food pairings into the only store of its kind in Rhode Island. Over 500 wines, imported and domestic beer, micro brews and spirits make up the well-stocked liquor section. This, combined with the full-service gourmet deli and food shop peddling cheeses, breads, dipping sauces, olive oils and other epicurean specialties, makes up the unique and friendly atmosphere of Grapes and Gourmet. Owner Frank LaPere says, “Customer friendliness and service is extremely important to our brand. Our staff is extremely well trained and has come to understand the value of good customer service.” LaPere is in charge of the liquor side of the store while his sister, Paula LaBarre, runs the gourmet food and deli side, carefully selecting foods that complement the wine selection. The deli counter carries items from smoked salmon to fresh fruit and mini pizzas, creating a wide variety of options. Now that autumn has arrived, so have the seasonal flavors such as the Oktoberfest beers and pumpkin pie liqueurs, along with all the seasonal foods and fruits. If you have trouble deciding on a food and wine pairing, LaPere advises, “A good rule of thumb is to pair a wine with a cheese from the same region.” For his part, he enjoys the Delice de Bourgogne on a fresh French baguette paired with champagne, dry riesling, rose or Sauternes. Tantalize your taste buds with free wine and cheese tastings every Saturday from 5-7pm. Grapes and Gourmet also runs Rhode Island’s only cheese and wine club. For Thanksgiving, the store offers free wine pairings, and a wide variety of gift baskets are also available. Grapes and Gourmet is located in Jamestown on the corner of Ferry Wharf at the Conanicut Marina. Open from 9am-9pm, Monday through Thursday and 9am-10pm, Friday and Saturday. Delivery is available to Jamestown and surrounding areas. For more information, contact Frank LaPere or Paula LaBarre by calling the store.

I sland A nimal Purple Door Bead Shop The next time you find
yourself spending the afternoon in Jamestown – taking in the scenery, having a bite to eat, doing a little shopping – stop into the totally unexpected Purple Door Bead Shop on East Ferry. What started as a small business out of Debbie Goyette home over a decade ago has now expanded into a store offering jewelry, gifts, and decorative beads. The Purple Door is “a little bit funky,” describes Debbie. “Every time you visit, you will find a unique assortment of beads. You will always find something different - I am always buying new beads from around the world and we are busy making more jewelry.” A full service bead shop, The Purple Door carries a huge selection of beads, as well as findings, stringing supplies and tools. They also carry a large assortment of Hill Tribe Silver, antique and global beads. Debbie also makes her own lampwork beads and pendants. “They’re quite unique compared to beads manufactured in a factory,” she says. This summer, she expanded the selection at the store, and now carries fine jewelry pieces as well. The collection of new and estate jewelry includes pieces in 14 carat gold and sterling silver, with semi-precious gemstones, diamonds and pearls. This time of year, there’s another good reason to stop by the Purple Door – the holidays are right around the corner. In an age when it’s easy to give big, commercial gifts from the mall, a handmade gift means more than ever. “Around the holidays I will get crafters that will come in and want to make their own jewelry to present as Christmas gifts,” Debbie says. Earrings tend to be popular, easy gifts, and beaded Christmas ornaments are always a hit. Also, Debbie points out, her gift certificates are a great choice for the serious beader. The Purple Door offers classes every Wednesday night with advance registration. “Classes are caterred to both the beginner and experienced beader,” Debbie says. “We will work with the students and their requests.” So whether you know how to make beautiful things or you’ve always wanted to learn, stop by the Purple Door to get what you need to make that happen.

Hi
My name is Clark and I am 7 years old. Until recently, I was roaming the streets of Ohio. A concerned citizen found me and contacted the Save A Lab Rescue which found a temporary home for me with a loving foster family in Rhode Island. My family interviewed many who wanted to adopt me, including The Seasons assisted living community in East Greenwich, which had been searching for just the right dog for the past 6 months. You see, in September, 2010, their adored black lab Boomer, had passed away from cancer leaving quite a void in the lives of the residents and staff. Arrangements were made for me to visit The Seasons. When I walked through the front door I knew this would be my new home. Residents and staff were so welcoming. Lots of smiling faces and lots of beautiful, spacious common areas and outside grounds for me to explore. I was sold! So I moved into The Seasons in May and I couldn’t be happier or better cared for. I am now part of a large, loving family. I invite you to stop by and meet me. I’ll be the one with some gray around my snout and a wagging tail.

drive by Highland Farm on Route 1 in South Kingstown, stop in and say hello to Linda Miranda. She manages the bakery inside this farm and garden center, a busy place during the holiday season. Right now the farm is overflowing with pumpkins, cornstalks and mums in autumnal hues. And the bakery is bursting with Linda’s goodies, from her fresh baked pies to her famous jumbo chocolate chip cookies. The author of two cookbooks, Linda has been developing recipes for more than 20 years (she’s been baking since she was a teenager), and she has competed in recipe contests on the national level, including three times in the Pillsbury baking competition. Linda’s first book, The Perfect Blend Cookbook, is an original collection of dessert recipes. (May we suggest the Peaches and Cream Scones or the Lemon Chiffon Ladyfingers?) Her latest book, The Seasoned Butcher’s Wife, offers nearly 200 recipes with a tip of her chef’s hat to her husband, a butcher by trade. This book is a compilation of meat and poultry recipes with expert tips and a wine-pairing guide. Two of Linda’s favorites are Jamaican Beef Skewers and Chicken Braciole in Chianti Gravy. The Wakefield resident will be hosting her family’s Thanksgiving Day dinner this year, with 12 guests gathered around the table. Coming from an Italian family, Linda says she will be serving lasagna as well as a traditional roast turkey. “For me, it’s very important to have that lasagna on our table at ThanksThe Seasoned giving,” she says. “It Butcher’s Wife represents a lot of famCookbook ily memories.” Everyone will save room for some of Linda’s decadent desserts, especially her classic pumpkin pie as well Linda Miranda as her Cran-Apple Pie, the recipe shared here.

cholesterol by 125 points without drugs, and she reveals how she did it in her book, Eating Your Way to Low Cholesterol. This former schoolteacher is a bit of a renaissance woman. She’s authored six books in the field of decorative arts and has written for numerous publications. She’s also a stencil designer, entrepreneur and food writer, with her articles appearing in local newspapers. Jeannie is planning for 43 people at her Thanksgiving table in Narragansett this year. That includes her nine grown children, their spouses, 19 grandchildren and friends. “Our family of good cooks starts planning the menu way in advance of the holiday,” she says. “Emails will be flying, and always the day before the great holiday come the phone calls, asking me for extra serving platters and advice on how to make gravy without lumps. Such fun!” Like families all over Southern Rhode Island and beyond, the extended Serpa family will gather to celebrate this national holiday. Jeannie says they will take time to say grace before dinner and give thanks, not just for the food, but for the blessings they have received throughout the year. “It’s important that we older folks remind the younger generation that Thanksgiving is not just about food,” she notes. A family favorite is this recipe for Butternut Squash Bisque. This smooth, velvety soup is the perfect “doahead” first course for Thanksgiving dinner. Make it one or two days in advance, omitting the cream, and store in the refrigerator. Before serving, stir in the cream and heat, being careful not to boil. To freeze leftover bisque, allow it (sans cream) to cool completely before sealing in an airtight container.

Linda Beaulieu You might say that Linda Beaulieu knows good food. As the longtime resident food writer, Linda contributes monthly dining reviews to SO Rhode Island and its sister magazine, Providence Monthly – but her experience writing about food goes way beyond the pages of these magazines. A James Beard Award winner for food writing (not to mention the first place awards she won in 2009 and 2010 from the Rhode Island Press Association for Best Dining Story), Linda has published four cookbooks over her storied career: Divine Providence: An Insider’s Guide to the City’s Best Restaurants, The Grapevine Guide to Rhode Island’s Best Restaurants, The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, and The TV Maitre d’ Cookbook, based on the local television show. The dessert included here is from her Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, which is a compendium of recipes collected from respected chefs at restaurants all over the state. “I was thrilled when I got the call from Globe Pequot [commissioning the book],” she says. “For years, I had been collecting recipes that are unique to this area, and I had a file cabinet full of recipes and stories. It was an absolute joy to write that book.” This pumpkin cheesecake is adapted from an original recipe created at the Castle Hill Inn & Resort in Newport. It makes good use of native pumpkins so abundant in the fall. Instead of an ordinary crust, ground almonds are added to the graham cracker crumbs for a slightly nutty flavor. Much like her unique perspective on dining, Linda also has a twist on how she’ll be spending the holidays. “For the past few years, we’ve been spending Thanksgiving with friends, and then Christmas with our relatives,” she describes. “Many of us now are ‘orphans’ - our parents have passed away, and most of us don’t have any children.” Of course, it’s a good time to flex their culinary skills. “Thanksgiving is a fun time for us. We’re all into food in a major way, and we all love to try new recipes every year.” –Julie Tremaine 40 SO RHODE ISLAND | November 2011

Normand Leclair Normand Leclair is one of Rhode Island’s legendary chefs. He was in the restaurant business for 50 years, and that included owning the famous Red Rooster Tavern in North Kingstown and the Pump House in Peace Dale. And of course, he has many stories to tell. Like the time the flamboyant pianist Liberace came in for dinner and asked where he could shop for antiques. Normand gave him a list of local dealers. The next day all the shop owners called Normand to thank him – Liberace had purchased everything they had for sale. He was opening an antiques store in Las Vegas and needed to stock it. Normand is now retired but hardly idle; he teaches cooking classes and prepares dinner parties in private homes. Normand divides his time between Kingston, and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, where he has a condo. “A couple of years ago, I had 17 people here in my condo for Thanksgiving dinner,” he says. “Really tight, but lots of fun.” This year Normand will spend Thanksgiving
at the home of longtime friends, some of whom worked with him at the Red Rooster. “Everyone is bringing something,” he says. “I’m bringing a Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie, a dessert we used to serve at the Red Rooster during the fall season. I also like to make my stuffing the French way with ground pork, Jimmy Dean sausage and mashed potato.” During his years as a restaurant chef, Normand penned three cookbooks: Chicken Expressions, Seafood Expressions and Culinary Expressions. Normand’s first two books were aimed at helping the home cook prepare delicious dishes for dinner parties with recipes that could be pre-assembled and whisked into the oven with no further attention, allowing the host and hostess to enjoy being with their guests. Culinary Expressions is a more advanced collection of recipes that help a good cook become a truly great cook in the home kitchen. This colorful appetizer recipe is from that cookbook.

Martha Murphy By day, Martha Murphy is the manager of marketing and communications at South County Hospital in Wakefield. She is also the author of three books: The Bed & Breakfast Cookbook, A New England Fish Tale, and Don Bousquet’s Rhode Island Cookbook, which she co-wrote with the famous Rhode Island cartoonist. Martha provided more than 50 recipes of classic Rhode Island fare, which accompany Bousquet’s food-related cartoons. Martha’s first book was a collection of recipes from bed-and-breakfast establishments in all 50 states, which she wrote back in 1990s when she was operating a B-and-B out of her home in Narragansett. “I became a published author almost by accident,” she explains. “Guests wanted my recipes, and when they talked about their travels to diverse, extraordinary places, they talked about food as much as anything else. It gave me an idea, and I began telling people I was thinking of writing a
cookbook/guidebook for B-and-B travelers. Eventually, I told so many people, I had to write the book.” A revised version of A New England Fish Tale will be published in 2012, with newly added food photography, streamlined cooking directions and new recipes. This Thanksgiving, Martha and her husband Kevin, a former commercial fisherman who is now an operating room nurse (how’s that for a career change?), will be dining with friends and family in Pride’s Crossing, Massachusetts, where two turkeys will grace the table to feed the crowd. Everyone brings a dish to this potluck dinner, and Martha will be in charge of the very important gravy. Indian Pudding is one of her favorite dishes – it appears in the cookbook she wrote with Don Bousquet. “I like it so much, I eat it for breakfast – that is, if there’s any left over,” she says. Here it is for you to enjoy as well.

Re Antiques and Interiors
Photography: Marylou Butler
When it comes to
interior design, it’s not about your living room replicating a page out of a home decorating magazine. Rather, it is about seeking out unique pieces that have a story behind them. The newest trend in home furnishing is mixing antique and more modern pieces to create a complementary balance of old and new. Heidi Stevens knows this, and two and half years ago, she opened Re Antiques and Interiors to help every home decorator find that essential balance. After owning a consignment store across the street from Re’s current location for eight years, Stevens, with a background in design, decided she wanted to go more high end. “I noticed younger people wanted to buy antiques, and felt that they were missing a sense of quality without them, but didn’t know how to pair them with newer things,” she says. For those without a designer’s eye, Re offers design consultations and personal shopping. “If someone is looking for something specific, we shout out to everyone we know to try
to find it for them,” she adds. With a wide selection of antique and new furniture, rugs, lighting, artwork and other home accessories, Re carries items for every taste and budget. The shop also has a large case of jewelry, featuring custom, fine estate jewelry and modern pieces, like a gorgeous Cartier watch. With a wide price point for all items, “we try to always have something for everyone,” explains Stevens. Re’s inventory includes appraised items that people bring in and pieces from estate buyouts, and there is never a shortage of beautiful and interesting finds. “We’ve been doing it for so long that word-of-mouth brings most people in,” she says. Locally made items are also featured in the shop, and Re hosts parties for local designers three or four times a year. “We try to help local craftsman and designers, especially in this economy,” Stevens says. Designer nights feature a mix of artisans, from painters to jewelers to textile artists and more, that then have the opportunity to sell their merchandise in the store.
These events have become immensely popular for designers and customers alike. “Creativities are coming alive — people are looking for ways to make a living,” Stevens explains. Superior and attentive customer service has gained Re loyal followers who visit the store regularly to peruse the latest findings. Re also has an email list for regular updates and an active Facebook page, where much of the inventory is posted as it is received. When movies are filmed in Rhode Island, Re even reaches out to its Facebook followers to find pieces for set designers. Recently, when Moonrise Kingdom starring Bruce Willis was being filmed in Rhode Island, Re’s customers contributed several items for a 1950s camping scene. Furnishing your home shouldn’t be a cause of stress, but rather a creative venture that allows you to express your personal style and taste. Re Antiques and Furnishings can help you find that special accent to give your home a touch of flair. 7512 Post Road, North Kingstown. 667-5996, www.facebook. com/rerhodeisland

So. Kingstown • 782-2285 What is the aesthetic of the French Bulldog? What Maureen and I like to do is carry unique, well cared-for pieces, whether they be high-end or no-label. If we like it and feel like we can make it work, then we take the piece. Today I sold a Prada bag and a peek-a-boo Fendi, but I also sold J. Crew. How do you find the latest trends when it comes to consignment shopping? Last year, we bought a lot of fur coats and jackets from people and turned them into vests and sold 16 of them. I try to take something that I think is great and change the trim or add different buttons. We also bought a ton of leather pants last year and turned them into leather shorts. We do a lot of tweaking ourselves, but I also find that a lot of women over-buy and sometimes bring things in with tags that are only one season past. We are doing a fashion show for the House of Hope and we have eight models. Each model is wearing two pieces, but we are having her wear it three different ways.

without going out of style? I really believe that it is important to purchase accessories, because you can afford to be a little trendy each season if you know how to accessorize. I also think that it is really important that you buy classic pieces that you change by year, like a nylon purse or a classic shoe. Fashion forecasting is difficult, even with the popularity of “retro” clothing. Is it possible to predict upcoming trends with consignments? It seems to be very instinctive to both Maureen and me; we both seem to have a sense to know what’s coming. We really try to do the fashion forward windows. About four weeks ago I had all men’s blazers and colored pants. [A photographer from the New York Times] showed that style in the paper three weeks later because that’s what women in New York are doing. Do you see any trends on the horizon for fall and winter – or do you try to start your own? It’s a little bit of both; the color burgundy is huge. We have a board up where we suggest [trends] like burgundy. Color blocking was something people did all spring and summer and we’re continuing it during the fall. We also really like men’s-looking shoes and clothes for women. 850 Main Street, East Greenwich. 884-0200, www.thefrenchbulldogconsignmentboutique.com

GATHER AROUND THE HEARTH: This kitchen was designed to be the home’s centerpiece
Blood, Sweat and Years
Surrounded by peaceful flora and fauna in the village of Carolina near both the Charlestown and Richmond borders, Gina Masiello discovered her own bucolic retreat. Along with her husband Ralph, the two decided Gina’s demanding job in the Providence Public School Department would be best balanced with a more tranquil place to call home than the Capital City, so eight years ago, the couple bought the expanse of land, armed with an ambitious plan and determined dispositions. Goodbye, close neighbors and the cacophony of bustling street sounds; hello, idyllic rural living. “My husband had thought out the design and did the blueprints,” she says proudly. The couple started talk-

ing about their hopes and dreams for the home from there — but first thing first. They needed to start from scratch, clearing the brush on the wooded acreage. Ralph turned to lifelong friend Randy Snow, owner of Furnace Brook Building, a Cranston-based general contractor. Though building from scratch requires ample heavy lifting, it also allows for a whole new set of advantages few new homeowners are afforded. “My friend, he’s very smart,” Ralph explains. “I could change things while we were building it.” For example, Randy pointed out a blank space on the exterior that would enclose the master bedroom. The more the two looked at it, the more they agreed that incorporating an additional window would make all
the difference. Subtle changes like this were made throughout, changes that better suited their lifestyle. But the basic plan, Ralph says, always stayed in place. Eight months later (even sooner than Ralph had predicted) and with well-earned pride, the Masiello family walked through the front door. “I thought it would take a year, but we did everything — plumbing, HVAC, everything. Nothing got subbed out,” Ralph says with an earnest humility. “It was just two of us. There was blood and sweat, for sure.” The hub of the main floor plan was always the kitchen. A prolific cook and seasoned entertainer, Gina helped plan a kitchen that was altogether functional, elegant, open and airy. Years of experience taught her that no matter
how many lovely seating areas one creates, guests will always gravitate toward the kitchen. The finished product is an homage to the couple’s Italian heritage, a Tuscan-style kitchen with almond-hued cabinetry, top-of-theline stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, a six-burner stovetop, a backsplash made of alternating earthtoned tiles, a range hood camouflaged by natural stone (which competes as the space’s arresting focal point), and large tiles underfoot. Luxury amenities include a wine cooler, double ovens, a double-drawer dishwasher, and pot filler, but they are more utilitarian than show. “Nothing trendy,” she declares. A sizeable island allows seating for at least five (particularly handy for when their daughter has friends over) and a

separate, more formal dine-in area in the kitchen is best suited for family meals. Of course, when extended family visits for occasions, the formal dining room takes center stage. In the summer months, both areas are much less frequented, as dining al fresco is one of the family’s favorite things to do. Like everything else, Ralph built the space from scratch, and the 28’ x 35’ deck includes a charming pergola that also allows for some shade, and a cooking and grilling station. The Masiellos treasure outdoor living, and one would think Shaggy, the family’s beloved greyhound they adopted from Lincoln Park, would do the same. “But he’s a couch potato!” Ralph laughs. Upstairs, the master bedroom suite
maximizes the rustic view and an en suite bath allows for added luxury. Columns surround the Jacuzzi bathtub and a tiled shelf is the perfect place for a pair of candelabras to set a relaxing ambiance. Two more bedrooms on the second floor allow for abundant living, and an attached in-law suite, the only addition since Ralph built the home, offers both convenience and privacy. One of Ralph’s favorite places at the Masiello home is the farmer’s porch out front. He says gazing out into the yard, a park-like setting, offers an enviable serenity. “You sit outside, have a glass of wine, listen to a little jazz…” he says, voice drifting off. “My husband did a really nice job,” Gina praises. “It’s nice coming home to the peace. I love it. I really do.”

A Spanish Inquisition Revisiting a Narragansett favorite Spain in Narragansett is
Photography: Hilary Block
one of my “go to” restaurants whenever there’s a special occasion, or when we have out-of-town guests. This is because Spain has never let me down. It is consistently good – make that very good – when it comes to the food and premium service you expect in a fine dining situation. I’m not alone in this way of thinking. You can drive by Spain almost any night, and the large parking area is overflowing with cars. Step inside this restaurant, which resembles a Spanish villa, and the entire place is often packed with people. This includes the main dining area with its rattan seating and trademark waterfall, the upper level with its cathedral ceiling, the spacious cocktail lounge, and the outdoor patio. Ah, the outdoor patio... Is there a prettier place to dine in Narragansett? I think not, but for that exquisite experience, we’ll have to wait until next year now that fall is here. Spain generally does not take reservations, but if you call an hour before you plan to arrive, they will put your name on the call-ahead list. This is what we did on a recent Sunday night. Our party of four was told there would be just a brief wait for our table. We headed for the lounge, and we were just getting into our mojitos when our name was called. We were led upstairs
Tiger Shrimp stuffed with Scallops
and given a lovely table that overlooked the flower-filled patio below. Beyond that, we could see the beach houses of Point Judith and the Atlantic Ocean, dotted with sailboats and fishing trawlers out of Galilee. On past visits, we’ve always started our dinner with the Artichoke Hearts ($9), stuffed with a savory mixture of smoked ham, spinach and fresh herbs. But on this night, we thought we’d give the Calamari ($9) a try. A fine decision, indeed. The pan-fried squid rings were tender and enlivened with the addition of mild and hot peppers. The Picasso Salad ($7) caught my eye, mostly because it sounded so different from all the usual salads I see on restaurant menus. Two key ingredients – artichoke hearts and avocado – also appealed to me, served over baby greens, red onion and endive with a vinaigrette made from balsamic vinegar, olive oil and fresh basil. I was not disappointed. Our entrees came from the beef and sea sections of the menu, and three out of four were spectacular. From the sea, the Baked Stuffed Lobster ($41) was the star of the evening, winning rave reviews from one of our guests. It had to have been at least a two-pound lobster, splayed open and overflowing with a well-seasoned stuffing consisting of crab, shrimp and
Stuffed Artichoke Hearts
scallops. Already cracked open for easy eating, the lobster offered up its sweet meat, made all the better with a dunk in melted butter. Once again, I chose to dine on a dish seldom seen in other restaurants – Basque Style Filet of Sole ($20). But there was more to this than just a fish filet. The flaky sole was surrounded with shrimp, clams and mussels still in their now-open shells, all in an aromatic broth of white wine and garlic. On the side, there was enough buttery saffron rice to feed a small family, as well as a vegetable medley of carrots and broccoli. Only Brian’s New York Sirloin ($22) was less than what we expected. The 16-ounce charbroiled steak was quite chewy. The topping of roasted garlic was deliciously sweet, but the lemon sauce just didn’t seem right on this cut of meat. A far better choice was the mushroom-topped Filet Mignon ($25) served to our other guest, generous in size and so tender. This is one of the signature dishes for which Spain is so well known, and rightly so. Both beef entrees were served with small mountains of outrageously good mashed potatoes and that standard vegetable medley. With this kind of food, you can’t go wrong with the house Sangria ($20 for a large pitcher), which thankfully was not overly sweet.
Brian and I couldn’t even think about dessert, but our guests wanted a sweet ending to their memorable dinner. The Crème Brulee was rated “excellent,” and the Frangelico Cheesecake was rich and creamy with the unmistakable flavor of hazelnuts. Spain is a very successful restaurant even in these dubious economic times. It has remained a year-round destination restaurant for many reasons – the outstanding service, the upscale atmosphere that isn’t too formal for a beach community, and, of course, the generous portions of both unique and traditional dishes that provide something for everyone. By any measure, Spain is exceptional. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

This is my favorite time of the year to go to Wickford, quite possibly the most charming village in Rhode Island, so alive with its many shops and restaurants. It’s all there within walking distance, an entire day of entertainment – especially if you are a foodie. The newest shop is the Narragansett Bay Olive Oil Company at 4 Brown Street, a charming little store where you can taste more than a dozen olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Some are pungent, some are fruity, and all are excellent. ALL THINGS LOCAL A Celebration of Local Foods is the theme of festivities scheduled for Saturday, November 5, at the Kinney Bungalow on the grounds of Sunset Farm in Narragansett. The event is a benefit for the Compass School, the only public charter school in southern Rhode Island. The school is located on Old North Road in Kingston. The gathering will begin at 6pm, with the spotlight on businesses, markets, farms and caterers that produce foods and beverages that are grown or harvested in Rhode Island. Tables will offer specialty items such as appetizers and finger foods made with local ingredients. Matunuck Oyster Bar will be serving its famous fresh shellfish. Sunset Farm is located at 505 Point Judith Road. Tickets are $40 each, and that includes food and drink. To purchase tickets, send an email to admin@compassschool.org.

November from previous page November 25-December 11 It’s doesn’t matter how it happened. You may have accidentally dropped it - thanks, slippery dishpan hands - into a million pieces on your tiled kitchen floor. Or it could have been the dishwasher’s fault, emerging from the cycle chipped in four places. But no matter how you broke that last bowl, it’s your reaction that’s the telling part. More than likely, you picked up the pieces, without much emotion, and dumped them. Yup. This is exactly why you need to visit the 41st Holiday Pottery and Art Sale. There’s no mass production here. Just one-of-a-kind bowls, plates, pots and ornaments in clay, small paintings, drawings, and photography, created by South County Art Association members. Handle with care, ‘cause next time, you’ll be shedding a few tears. Wednesday-Sunday: 10am-6pm. Free. give more, Buy Less November 25 Let’s review. Last Thanksgiving, you forced the family to eat dinner early, so that you could go to bed early, so you could get up early - somewhere around 2am. Then, you decided to stand in line for hours - way, way before the sun came up - on the quest for that doorbuster special, trying not to get trampled in the ensuing dash through the store, not to get one. Really. Was that any fun? This year, go greener with Buy Nothing Day. Sure, it will go against every instinct you have as an American not to shop until you drop on Black Friday. But, you can fake it ‘til you make it during the coat exchange (bring one and/or take one) if you’re really having withdrawal symptoms. senioritis enjoy Social Security (while it lasts)
Photography: Tony Annicone
Thanks to advances in
modern medicine, senior citizens are living to be ever more senior these days. Which means, if it hasn’t happened already, it is likely only a matter of time before you welcome an elderly relative into your home. If you love your elders but cringe at the thought of hearing the thump of their walkers at your door, you are not alone. Laugh away your fears with a lighthearted take on the subject, aptly titled Social Security, at the Newport Playhouse this month. For Barbara and David, two chic, forty-something art dealers on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, life is all cocktails, gallery openings, and good-natured criticism. That is, until a particularly scandalous family crisis lands Barbara’s elderly mother in their laps. What happens next is both expected — oh, the tyranny of an aged mother! — and marvelously unexpected. As the couple grapples with the trials of caretaking, the challenges of marriage, and the upheaval to their daily routine, they slowly learn to embrace change and each other. Director Tony Annicone is no stranger to the stage. The local actor and theater critic has directed over a hundred shows and reviewed nearly a thousand. He helmed the Academy
Players of East Greenwich production of Social Security a few years back, at which point he described it as “a comedy about parenthood, art and sex... and not necessarily in that order.” Written by Andrew Bergman of Fletch, Blazing Saddles and The In-Laws, the play opened on Broadway in 1986 and holds up remarkably well. Apparently, having parents pushing 80 was just as problematic in the ‘80s as it is today. The Newport Playhouse production features Jessica Grossman as Barbara, the distressed daughter, with David Adams Murphy as her bemused husband David. Leslie Zeile plays Barbara’s uptight sister Trudy, partnered by Rick Bagley as her nerdy accountant spouse Martin. Sandra Nicastro and Molly Marks share the part of the domineering matriarch Sophie, a hilarious role originated by Olympia Dukakis. Rounding out the cast is Jim Killavey as an ancient French artist who maintains the spirit of youth in surprising ways. “I have to make sure the audience can identify with the characters so they can laugh out loud at the situations in the show,” Annicone declares of his directorial duties. From lively sibling rivalry to take-no-pris-
oners parenting tactics, the characters in Social Security walk the fine line between riotous and relatable. Without giving away the play’s many jokes and gags, Annicone does allow, “There is a funny dance scene done to the habanera from Carmen [‘L’amour est un oiseau rebelle…’] that has to be seen to be believed.” Social Security could give you a newfound appreciation for the more gray-haired and grizzled members of your family. Or it could give you impetus to move far, far away as fast as possible. Either way, combined with the Playhouse’s all-you-can-eat buffet and spirited post-show cabaret, it should make for a fun night. While social security itself may not survive the next 30 years, hopefully this play will.

sculpting. What comes to mind? For me, I picture Italian artist Michelangelo back in the early 1500s brilliantly, instinctively chiseling away at marble until the famous David sculpture was born – or rather created. However, an artist who sculpts art out of metal, stainless steel or recycled materials is probably not the first image that jumps to mind – unless, of course, you’re familiar with award-winning artist and North Kingstown resident Ken MacDonald. Receiving his degree in Industrial Design from Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1950s, Ken left Rhode Island and worked for 35 years in product design and management after his tour of duty with the Army; he returned to Rhode Island in 1977. Though he had a lifelong interest in various types of sculpture, it was only 20 years ago when he decided to purchase his welding equipment, and it was not until 1998 that he began his craft of welded sculpture. It is unmistakable when looking at his work that Ken has a gift for capturing Rhode Island’s spirit and natural beauty. Many aspects that residents enjoy daily, such as beach
stones, shore birds and the bay, make inspiration a breeze for Ken, who tends to draw ideas from the state’s wondrous and overlooked simplicities. Nature, human dynamics and sometimes even a simple metal object will steer him toward his muse. Though he does like to use a wide variety of materials, most of his sculptures are made from one of two sources. “Half of my work is in stainless steel, and the other is using found objects such as farm implements, wheels and gears to put some life, and sometimes whimsy, into a new piece,” he explains, adding, “I also like to capture the original rust patina if possible.” Developing and displaying his own artistic visions over the years, Ken has acquired quite the collection of pieces, from smaller steel and stone birds that would dress up any Rhode Island home with their distinctive presence to larger pieces that everyone can enjoy, such as a stainless steel outdoor fountain located in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Meditation Garden in Wickford. Ken’s largest piece, a sail-like design in East Greenwich, measures out to 10 feet tall and took him about 10 weeks to
complete and install. Ken is no stranger to such elaborate projects. He recalls a commissioned piece in Charlestown that stands out as his most satisfying and challenging project due to the technical demands. The structure is an eight-foot tall, hollow, stainless steel sculpture combined with a large fused glass insert. Though some sculptures may be complex and require much time, thought and effort to produce the finished piece, the hard work is exactly what Ken enjoys. “I like the process most,” he says, “listening to the clients and having them feel as though I’ve created the feelings they were hoping to have in the completed work.” Ken is actively involved in the local artist community and a dedicated member of the Providence Art Club, the Wickford Art Association, the Newport Art Museum and the Spring Bull Gallery in Newport. He has an exhibit planned next year at the Providence Art Club, from April 29-May 18. You can even view some of his pieces on YouTube or his website, www.kmsculpture.com. Ken MacDonald can be contacted at 294-2997 or kmsculpture@cox.net.

The great pumpkin November 5 There are certain things that everyday life just doesn’t encourage - like throwing pumpkins at the windshields of cars. That’s an activity that’s viewed as highly dangerous and highly frowned upon. But fantasy becomes reality at the Pumpkin Launch, where the target is a parked wreck and anyone who hits it gets a prize. As you step up to the launch pad with your gourd, be sure to give a word of thanks to the builders of the trebuchet, without whom there would be no friendly competition. This third generation design was based on a 6th century European blueprint, originally used in the Middle Ages to smash masonry walls or throw projectiles over them. Heritage Restoration fine-tuned the physics of the structure until 15 pound pumpkins could travel 180 feet (or half the length of a football field). 1-4pm. Free.
