The Rhode Island Blood Center in Warwick has moved! 24-year-old grateful for blood donors When Nathan Auger, now 24, began donating blood as a student at Pilgrim High School in Warwick, he was like a lot of high school kids. It got him out of a couple of classes, and sometimes he’d even get a movie pass. But it didn’t taken Nathan long to recognize that there were a lot more reasons to donate than incentives.
my foot … two tendons out and the main artery that goes through the foot. I spent two weeks in the hospital making sure the artery would heal. Once it healed they knew I would pretty much be able to keep my foot.”
He understood the importance of helping others, taking a little time out of your day “to actually save somebody’s life. It’s an easy way of doing some good.” Nathan has been donating regularly since high school.
While in the hospital he underwent “four or five surgeries,” and used three units of red cells. “I’ve given (blood) so much, it sort of makes you feel not too bad,” he said. “I imagine a lot of people that end up getting blood don’t ever think twice about donating.”
Then one morning last spring, while on his way back to his house in the Potowmut section of Warwick, a deer “jumped” in the path of his jeep. “When I swerved to miss him, my jeep rolled over two and a half times. I tore a hole on the inside of
Nathan, as you would suspect, is a strong advocate of blood donation. “The sooner you get into it, you make it part of your life. It’s convenient when you make it part of your regular routine.” you make it part of your regular routine.”

Ma ke Her Light Up This Holiday Season !
From the Editor If there’s one thing that makes the oncoming winter seem slightly more tolerable, it’s the holiday cheer that happens in December. There’s so much packed into one month: holiday shopping, celebrating with family and friends, going to festive events, decorating your house. It might be the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the busiest (and most expensive, too). Don’t worry – SO is here to help. This year, our Holiday Guide is a Holiday Shopping Guide. We combed southern Rhode Island’s shelves for fabulous gifts for everyone on your shopping list. And, because we believe you when you say that this is the year you’re finally going to stick to your holiday budget,
everything is under $50. Leave it to SO to find a way to shop while you relax with our magazine. Since we’re saving you so much time this month, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy everything else going on in December. Check out On Stage for Molly Lederer’s round-up of holiday shows, the festivities happening in Wickford in Get Out and a local Christmas album in So & So. And to work off all of the calories from the cookies you’ll see in So Approved, we’ve got the lowdown on an advanced yoga class in Whole Body. Read on to find out all the ways you can get the most out of this month. Happy holidays! –Julie

So Happening | So & So STRAIGHT FROM THE FARM
The Local Way to Stay Warm this Winter Check out local farms this holiday season, such as the Red Horse Farm in Exeter or the Fenner Hill Farm in Hope Valley, because its time to invest in a Rhody Warm Blanket. The Rhode Island Resource Conservation & Development Area Council and the RIDEM Division of Agriculture are working with local farms throughout Rhode Island to produce wool blankets using materials only from Rhody farms. These 100 percent wool blankets and throws will make sure you are more than prepared for the dropping temperatures and icy winds that are rapidly approach-
ing. The blankets come in multiple sizes, including Full, Queen, and King, while the throws are offered in Lap or Long (exact dimentions can be seen on their website, see below). Whether you purchase the blankets for yourself or for gifts for family and friends, it’s a great way to become involved and show your support for local farmers and the Rhode Island agricultural community. Plus, wouldn’t you prefer wrapping yourself up in a cozy, wool blanket with a cup of hot chocolate rather than venturing out into a blizzard? 5782012, www.risheep.org -Jennifer Liedke
LOCAL MUSIC
Light Up the Holidays If you’ve grown tired of the familiar and overplayed versions of Christmas songs on the radio, then this locally made and recorded CD may be the perfect solution: Eileen Fiore of Westerly has just finished her second album, Christmas Light. The beautiful vocalistcentered tracks take the traditional holiday tunes and present them in a refreshing way. Internationally recognized musician Tom Kendzia is the producer, and also plays guitar and other instruments. On 12 tracks, Fiore belts out many carols from “I’ll be Home for
Christmas” to “O Holy Night.” Fiore’s talent has been enjoyed in Westerly for the past ten years at weddings and special events, in the Ocean State Lyric Opera, and even by the Pope while she visited Italy with the Gregorian Concert Choir. This album is a culmination of the varied experience Fiore has gained over the years. For $20, you can purchase this CD at local retailers, all listed on her website. They are also available on iTunes and Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds will go to St. Pius X School in Westerly. www.tunecore.com/music/eileenfioremusic –Lauren Knight

Fun And Games Big Trivia in a Small State How much trivia
could the smallest state in the country possibly have, right? Well, there’s a lot more than you would think. If you’re a native Rhode Islander (or even if you’re not), chances are you have probably driven past half of the locations and landmarks that make up Rhode Side. The true test: do you actually know what the heck they are? Well, if you’re not so sharp on your small state trivia, here’s your chance to brush up. This colorful picture game is bound to test your famil-
iarity with Rhody’s roadside sites, thanks to creator Roberta Mudge Humble, who has published several books that give our little state bragging rights, and last year’s trivia game Rhode Test. A portion of all of Mudge Humble’s works, including this new game, benefit the historic Westerly Armory. Rhode Side can be found at a handful of locations all over the state and is only $20. Hurry – this game is limited edition and is selling out fast! www.westerlyarmory.org –Whitney Smith

Heavy Petting A dozen of North Kingstown’s not-socamera-shy pet parents have come together to pose for the 2011 Paws for a Cause calendar. Produced by the North Kingstown Chamber Charitable Foundation, the same group behind the popular Women of Wickford and Men of Wickford calendars featuring semi-scantily clad locals, Paws for a Cause has a subtle association with people of the waterfront. A pair of assistant harbor masters appear with their four legged friends, as does the Commodore of the Wickford Yacht Club; there’s the man about town best known for walking around Wickford with his ubiquitous Irish wolfhounds and the foundation’s Melissa Devine poses
with her kitty, a feline she concedes is “as about as receptive to having his picture taken as Sean Penn.” There’s a host of rescue pups, and – proving lovable animals aren’t all about the fur factor – there’s a heartfelt “In Memoriam” for Ruby the Octopus of Biomes Aquarium at Shady Lea Mill. The calendar will be available the first week of November, and will be sold at the North Kingstown Chamber, Beauty and the Bath and the Inside Scoop. The cost of the calendar is $15 with all proceeds going to North Kingstown Food Pantry, the North Kingstown Animal Shelter and Laymen in North Kingstown Schools, as well as scholarships for high school students. -Andrea E. McHugh

The Southern Rhode Island Volunteers have organized a fun and creative holiday event to help benefit the community on December 4: the Holiday Marketplace and Crafters’ Fair. The fair, to be held from 10am-2pm at the Senior Community Center in Ninigret Park, features the works of over 25 juried artists and crafters, as well as a silent auction and 50/50 cash raffle. The aesthetics are complemented by delicious baked goods, lunches, drinks and breakfast pastries. The SRIV will use the funds to help improve the quality of life in Washington County, Jamestown, and East and West Greenwich. 789-2362, www.southernrivol.org.
Volunteer This season, share the spirit of giving with the homeless at Westerly Area Rest Meals (WARM), where volunteers can contribute to a variety of outreach efforts, by working in the community soup kitchen, donating winter clothing for Attire for Hire, advocating for the homeless or supporting Anita’s Kitchen, an initiative for better serving the needs of the community. If you don’t have time to volunteer but still want to help, remember that donations of money and food are just as appreciated. 596-WARM, www.warmcenter.org. -Meagan Gann

ew things evoke the holiday spirit more than taking a stroll through the quaint village of Wickford. It’s the perfect place to avoid the hustle and bustle of malls and big box retailers, while still checking off that shopping list. There are a ton of charming shops, as well as great places to dine, but did you know that Wickford also has a fantastic art scene? In addition to a handful of galleries, there are shops that feature handcrafted jewelry and local artisan work, and even places to try your own hand at a bit of arts and crafts. Whether you’re looking for some artful holiday shopping, or want to create that perfect gift yourself, Wickford is sure to offer the answer. If you are not sure where to start, then Voila is the place to figure it out. Voila is a fine art gallery and supply store that also offers an extensive variety of classes. Some of the classes they offer are pen and ink, fused glass, mixed media, oils, watercolors, photography and jewelry. They also offer “Mommy and Me” classes, where kids and their moms can participate in the classes together. Would you prefer something a little out of the ordinary? The Wickford Art Association has you covered. In addition to more traditional classes they offer a handmade paper workshop, “out of the box” photography and relief carving in limestone. While you are there, make sure to check out their art gallery too, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday. The Mermaid’s Purl offers knitting and beading classes at least three times a week, for all levels of expertise. Every Wednesday night stop by for the “Knit-in,” where you can bring in your current works in progress and receive feedback or just go to chat while you work. If you prefer art of the wearable variety – as in jewelry, ladies – Wickford has plenty of what you seek. Stop

Gallery and check out their assortment of home décor made almost exclusively in the U.S. If silver jewelry is more your speed, then stop into Green River Silver Co. Their silver is bought directly from artisans in the U.S., India, Mexico, Bali and Thailand. Green River also carryies sea glass jewelry by Gary deBlois and Robin Wilson. There are many places in Wickford that cater to all of your artistic needs, such as Mystic Scrimshanders. The Personal Touch
Add Color and Sparkle to the Holidays with Firefly Jewelry…
This holiday, get outfitted in local style
Photography: Amy Amerantes
Walking into URE Outfitters, you immediately sense the rustic, warm atmosphere of a family-owned store. This may be because of owner Jon Ure, who finds that locals love to stop by and chat for a bit – or a while. The outdoorsy store offers much more than you may expect. Over the past 25 years, they have provided outdoor equipment and apparel suitable for any adventure. However, URE Outfitters also offers womens’ wear, gift items, books and maps, cast iron cookware and much more. One change they’ve have noticed over the years is the growing demand for women’s apparel. “A good third of the store is ladies’ apparel,” says manager Mary Beth Flood. She remarks that much of the men’s and women’s outdoor apparel has begun to lean in a fashionable direction. “We still cover the technical apparel, but even that has grown to be more fashion-oriented.” URE Outfitters will also be bringing in handcrafted jewelry, made by one of their own employees, Pam Trenholm. Each piece fits well within the store’s vibe: earthy, made from materials such as stone, wood or crystals. The jewelry is very affordable, especially considering the time and energy that goes into each item. With the holidays approaching, this may be the perfect stop for a gift or two. “One advantage during the holidays is that there is much less traffic here, in comparison with the malls; we have plenty of parking,” notes Ure. While they may have a line during the holidays, the rush is nothing

161 Old Tower Hill Rd., Wakefield (401) 789-7172 compared to big box retailers and malls. “We still get very busy,” he says, “but here you have the touch of personal service.” And ladies, listen up. Not only can you find a jacket or pair of boots for yourself, you may be able to knock most of the items off your man’s Christmas list in one fell swoop. They have tents, fishing and hunting gear, boots and jackets, even boats — which, by the way, you may test out in the water behind the store. URE Outfitters even offers more functional fashion for men, such as long underwear, sweaters or hats. URE Outfitters offers many brand names, some of which include Life is Good, Carhartt, North Face, Dansko and Woolrich. While these names often attract customers, Ure comments on the demand for quality in all his merchandise.
“It seems people aren’t as dead set on a specific brand anymore,” he notes. “They are just looking for good quality.” You can rest assured that URE Outfitters truly believes in offering you the best merchandise available, so expect them to last you many years. Since 1985, the store has been in the family and continues to maintain that personal character. Ure even personally handcrafted the tables and shelves on which the merchandise is now displayed. So if you are looking for a local store that’s a departure from the normal holiday hustle and bustle, then URE Outfitters is the stop for you. You will surely be greeted with a smile and attentive personal service. 1009 Main Street, Hope Valley. 5344050, www.ureoutfitters.com

Living History This historic castle has hosted everyone from George Washington to current Supreme Court justices
Photography: Janice Lee Kelly
STORM THE RAMPARTS: This castle predates the Revolutionary War
As the saying goes, every man’s home is his castle. Of course, in most cases, we’re talking figuratively, not literally. The exception is the Leach Family, who bought Malbone Castle in 1995, joining a legacy of well-heeled proprietors of the oldest privately owned estate in Newport. Set on 17 rolling acres dotted with one of the nation’s largest private collections of beech trees, the original Malbone Hall dated back to the mid-1700s, named for Colonel Godfrey Malbone, who made the home his country estate. The manse was destroyed in a chimney fire in 1766 – allegedly on the same evening General George Washington was a dinner party guest. According to the current homeowner, Washington and Malbone were friends, dating back to their time spent in Virginia. Malbone made his fortune privateering, and the Leach family confirms the existence of a much-rumored tunnel that once led to Narragansett Bay (now blocked in). “They used to bring in contraband through there. [Malbone] was the biggest ship merchant,” says the homeowner. By sneaking in weapons and slaves,
the magnate avoided paying customs duties and grew his shipping fortune. The estate was resurrected by attorney Jonathan Prescott Hall and his wife, wealthy New Yorkers who commissioned Alexander Jackson Davis, best known for designing Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate buildings, in 1848. Builders used pink sandstone to create a solid Gothic-style estate, says the homeowner, adding that the color-rich stained glass was created by William J. Bolton, a preeminent stained glass manufacturer. Since then, according to the Leach family, owners have included the Lorillard and Bailey families – which explains the multitude of “LB” insignias carved in wooden details, including elaborate ceiling moldings, throughout the home. Black and white photos scattered throughout the home dating back more than 60 years show the grand entry virtually unchanged. A strikingly wide stairway cascades down from the second floor to the foyer, opposite the sitting room. Inside the foyer sits a stunning grandfather clock
by Providence clockmaker Walter Durfee, custom made for the St. Aubin family, replete with “SA” carved in the center. It was once housed in the family’s multi-million dollar Watch Hill estate, which was bequeathed to Bishop Francis Keough, the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Providence, following the homeowner’s death in 1942. (Incidentally, the homeowner’s niece was left linens, and her brother, sterling.) Later, the Diocese sold the estate and all of its contents, which is how the Leach Family acquired the still-working stunner. In the living room, awash in soft pink and boasting an original white parquet ceiling, there’s another piece with rich with Rhode Island history: a piano that once entertained revelers at the Turks Head Club. Once located on the top floor of the Turks Head Building, the club crowned the historic 16-story office building in the heart of Providence’s Financial District. Floor to ceiling, hand-carved, ornate wood hearths are found in the living room, parlor and both dining rooms, and intricate parquet flooring

So Stylish | Life/Style with diverse patterning is found throughout. One of the upstairs bedrooms houses a seven-piece wood bedroom set that once belonged to James Michael Curley, Boston’s beloved four-term mayor who also served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as Governor of Massachusetts. One of the Leach Family’s more quirky pieces is an oil-on-canvas portrait of famed American columnist Ann Landers that came from the Landers family estate. “The funniest thing is that someone was here who knows her granddaughter very well,” says the homeowner. “So I said, ‘If her granddaughter wants it, I’d be happy to give it to her.’” These coincidences can happen when you entertain as much as the homeowner does, opening the doors of the castle to nonprofit and charitable organizations for fundraisers and gatherings, including the Aquidneck Land Trust, the American Heart Association, the Junior League of Rhode Island, the Norman Bird Sanctuary and the American Red Cross. They have hosted United States Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg and anthropologist/conservationist and chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall. The walls of the northernmost parlor act as the home’s chronological and social record, with framed news clipping and social pages mounted throughout. As the Leach family continues to share the architectural gem with the community, the castle’s centuries-old legacy will carry on.

So Stylish | Whole Body By Alyssa Smith
Feel the Burn
Illustration: Ruth Chung
A yoga newbie gets a little ahead of herself Downward facing dog, swan dive and chaturanga, oh my! If these exercises sound like gibberish to you too, then I don’t feel so alone. To attain health and wellness, I’ve opted to try a variety of activities with the promise that I would feel “more whole,” “balanced” or “energized” after. However, with holiday food slowly creeping into my life and less time to fight the pounds it can cause, I’ve been biting the bullet and working out, finding exercises that will kick my butt while not killing me or making me aware that my butt is being kicked. I do admit I buy into the benefits of yoga. I like the idea of getting more flexible, pushing one’s body to do poses one would typically think only contortionists can do, and feeling more Zen-like after a session. The last class I took, laughter yoga, was fun, but didn’t push me in the physical sense. Being a fan of All That Matters’ classes in Wakefield, I decided to try their Vinyasa yoga. As I walked into the class around 9:30am, I was surrounded by yogic veterans who came equipped with their own mats and roomy clothing, and couldn’t help noticing how intently they were stretching and preparing for the session. I started to freak out a little once I saw I wasn’t surrounded by amateurs like myself, but I figured I’d try to hold my own. Our instructor was a petite woman who, although small, had Madonnalike muscle tone. We started off with an easy child-pose in which we basically curled ourselves into the fetal position on our mats. From there, the poses got progressively harder, and as I started to wobble around my mat while trying to remain composed and “Zen-like,” I started to have a “what am I doing here?” moment. Luckily, the instructor helped a few of us newbies with our poses, lightly moving us to the correct positions. As the poses were getting tougher and being held longer, the instructor suggested

we try to smile instead of focusing on how much it sucked to be uncomfortable. She also mentioned frequently that because this class was about going at your own pace in order to create a steady flow of movement, we could rest with a child pose at any time. (Yes, I did take advantage of that option.) I noticed how much I was working each part of my body as I tried to remain balanced, and I almost thought I wouldn’t need to make it to the gym later that day because this workout would have been just as sufficient. After enduring the yoga-burn, we ended with some breathing and relaxation exercises to cool down. It turns out Vinyasa yoga is not a style that’s particularly friendly for the beginner. The poses are held longer, requiring some endurance and stamina. You will sweat and push your body if you aren’t used to holding a plank or warrior pose for at least ten seconds. All in all, I can recommend it for those who want to get tone but might want a different setting than the intimidating “boot camp” style classes offered at so many gyms. However, if you haven’t taken a yoga class before or are unsure of what lies ahead of you, you might want to try one of the basic classes at All That Matters first. Want to feel the burn yourself? Check out All That Matters, 315 Main Street, Wakefield. 782-2126; www.allthatmatters.com.

The Charlestown Gallery displays the works of local artists. Do you have criteria when deciding which types of art to showcase in your gallery? We have a mission to show some of the highest caliber art in the region. That is the first criteria. We are partial to oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, but we also like to show some mixed media, photography and sculpture. Other types of original works on paper or other surfaces, and limited edition prints are also considered. As you can tell, we like lots of variety to keep it interesting for everyone. Also we have unique original jewelry and handmade Persian rugs. Many people pass through your gallery. To those who have a difficult time understanding or appreciating art, how would you guide them? Good question. Art is so personal. Each viewer brings their own life experiences into the emotion of responding to a piece in our gallery. In other words, if it means something to you and you react to it, that’s good. Whether you smile, laugh, cry or scream, you are involved. That’s a good form of appreciation or expression. If you walk by and feel nothing, move on to the next piece; there is a lot to look at. The holidays are just around the corner and original works of art would make great gifts. How do you choose a gift for someone? The gift of art can last a lifetime, so
hopefully the receiver judges the gift from the giver’s point of view. It always helps if you have some shared tastes, experiences or thoughts. Bottom line: what a great gift to give someone. That’s a real friend. I think people assume that fine art is out of their budget. What do you say to them? Some works of art can be too expensive for your wallet. You should start somewhere that’s not a financial burden. But once you fall in love with a piece that you have purchased, the price is not usually what you love about that piece. In order to make art easier to purchase though, we offer all sorts of personal payment and layaway plans. We will also let you try out a painting in your home before you purchase it. Do you find that specific forms of art mesh well with certain types of personalities? Absolutely not! There is no way to predict or correlate a personality type with a form of art. The quietest, shyest librarian can like the loudest, boldest, largest sculpture, and a heavy metal rock star can love a small, quiet, introspective painting. That’s one of the things that makes selling art so much fun. How do you curate your gallery? The quick answer to that question is quality. We need to have that gut reaction when we see something. We have a
formula that seems to change regularly. In order for us to show a variety of high caliber, contemporary, regional art, we look for some large, some small, some landscape and seascape, some figurative and abstract, some still life and some surprises. We try to show a variety of price points that we think a variety of our clients can afford. We wish we could curate some million-dollar art, but we are not there – yet. If it’s well chosen, art can add so much to a home’s décor. Any advice on choosing the right piece for your home? Any advice on ways to display it well? Being art dealers and art lovers, we feel art should be the star of a room décor. Don’t get hung up on matching colors. A big piece is nice in a big space. A small piece in a small space. And a grouping gives a variety of options. Moving pieces around from time to time keeps it fresh. We will also come to your space and hang the piece for you (free of charge). Any special events or anything we should know for the holiday season? Our Peace on Earth Holiday Show runs from December 3-December 31. We’re hosting an open house with artists and refreshments all day on Saturday, December 11. 5000 South County Trail, Charlestown. 364-0120, www.charlestowngalleryri.com

Raise a Glass for the Holidays Reasons to indulge you inner oenophile The holidays are a fine time for wine, and here are just three interesting winerelated opportunities. Grapes & Gourmet at 9 Ferry Wharf in Jamestown offers Rhode Island’s only wine and cheese club, with four different levels of membership. This is a good way to experience new wines, and there is no membership fee. Every month wines from different regions and cheeses that pair well with them will be featured. For instance, for $40 a month, members will be given two bottles of wine and two artisan cheeses. For $75 a month, members receive two bottles of unique and hard-to-find wine and four diverse artisan cheeses. The other two membership levels focus strictly on wine. For $30 a month, two bottles of wine valued between $13 and $17 will be delivered to the members. For $60 a month, two bottles of wine valued between $25 and $35 are delivered. Members will be asked to indicate their wine preferences (red, white, rose, dry or sweet) and their regions of interest (domestic and international). They will also be asked about their food and cheese preferences when they sign up. To do so, visit www.grapesandgourmet.com and click on the wine club icon. Down in Stonington at the Jonathan Edwards Winery, a complimentary membership event will offer a prerelease taste of the long-anticipated 2008 Syrah wine on Friday, December 10. The winery will be decked out for the holidays. From 6:30- 8:30pm, small bites of food and acoustic music will also be offered. The winemaker will discuss the recent growing season and the Syrah, which is
said to have warm notes of cedar, cherry and cloves. For reservations, call 860535-0202 or send an email to Erica@jedwardswinery.com by December 8. Just about everyone has a wine lover in their life, and here is the quintessential holiday gift for that fanatic: The Wine Lover’s Devotional: 365 Days of Knowledge, Advice and Lore for the Ardent Aficionado by Jonathon Alsop. With gorgeous, muted color photography, this book is organized as a day minder with entries creating a complete year’s worth of information. You can start the book from the beginning, reading one entry each day, or you can skip around from week to week, reading what interests you the most. There’s plenty that will be of interest. My favorite part of the book is the entry for every Wednesday, the pairing of wine and food with wine-inspired recipes. This book will help me get through the dead of winter as I make the Baked Fish with Bouillabaisse Sauce, Easy Cinnamon Lamb Stew and Oven-Roasted Tomato Sauce. (Doesn’t that sound interesting?) The author is the founder and executive director of the Boston Wine School. He’s been writing about wine for more than 20 years. The hardcover book was published by Quarry Books, and it sells for $19.99. DATE NIGHT Thursday night is now date night at Hemenway’s Dockside Dining, 28 Water Street in East Greenwich. Couples are offered a three-course, prix-fixe dinner for two with wine for $59 a couple. Every couple participating in date night will be entered into a drawing to win dinner for
two at Hemenway’s in Providence, two tickets to the Lion King at the Providence Performing Arts Center, and a one-night stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites. The special menu offers a choice of appetizers to share, including Mediterranean Bruschetta or an Oyster Sampling. Entrees include Mixed Seafood Grill, Lobster and Crab Thermidor, or Zuppa de Pesce for Two. For dessert, the couple will share a Flourless Chocolate Torte. For more info or to make a reservation, call 336-3920 or visit www.hemenways-eg.com. MORE SPECIAL MENUS Sunday through Thursday, Trio in Narragansett and Hemenway’s Dockside Dining in East Greenwich are offering new three-course, prix fixe seasonal menus. Both deals are priced at $19.95 per person and start off with soup or a mixed green salad. To make reservations, visit www.newportrestaurantgroup.com. At Hemenway’s Dockside Dining, the choice of entrees includes Seafood Nantucket, Gorgonzola Steak Tips, Grilled Salmon, Baked Scrod and Stuffed Chicken. Dessert choices are Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce or Warm Chocolate Torte. At Trio, the second course is a choice of Trio Meatball with grilled Tuscan bread or Rhode Island Stuffies. Entrée selections feature Trio Meatloaf, Slow Braised Boneless Stuffed Chicken Leg, Haddock Stew, and Classic Neapolitan Penne Genovese. Guests may also choose a glass of Beringer Stone Cellars Chardonnay or Cabernet or a Newport Storm Castle Hill Windward Weiss.
NEW CREW AT BAY VOYAGE The Wyndham Bay Voyage Inn in Jamestown has appointed Anthony Ockunzzi, Joshua Smerdon and Geoffrey Goss to the positions of chef de cuisine, pastry chef and sous chef, respectively. All three come from the private Le Gorce Country Club in Miami Beach. “I have a history with Anthony, Josh and Geoff so I knew it would be a good fit,” says Chris Perrotti, resort manager at the Bay Voyage. “Their culinary expertise and creativity are already being recognized as we’re receiving great feedback from our guests.” SAY HELLO TO BALLO John J. Tunney III, a restaurant maverick who is best known for his high profile, always-packed creations in New York, Connecticut, Las Vegas and Atlantic City, has begun construction on a 16,000 square-foot restaurant at Mohegan Sun, to be named Ballo Italian Restaurant and Social Club. This will be Tunney’s 12th restaurant and his latest after receiving three consecutive New York Times “Excellent” reviews for his current properties. SAY IT AIN’T SO Steph and Jeff Cruff, owners of the Cheeky Monkey in Narragansett, have decided to close their restaurant for the winter. Their web and Facebook sites remain active so you can still contact them for any parties you need catered. If you have news dealing with food, restaurants or chefs, feed it to Linda Beaulieu at Lindab2720@aol.com.

Something for Everyone Get a little taste of a lot of things at Dan’s Place spot for a small family reunion. Our nephew John, who lives north of Boston, spent the afternoon touring the University of Rhode Island with his pal, Brandon. Both are high school seniors trying to decide where to go to college. John’s father, Jack, was doing the driving. Before hitting the road for the two-hour drive home, they met us at Dan’s Place in West Greenwich, handily located right off Interstate 95. It was late in the afternoon on a Friday, and the main parking lot was already pretty full. Brian and I had a good feeling the minute we entered this rustic restaurant. The warm greeting, lively noise level and giant-screen TV in the lounge area were promising signs this was a local hot spot. Our ever-smiling waitress seemed determined to make our dinner a most pleasant experience. The two teens joked that everything on the menu looked good and that maybe we should simply order one of each. Before things got out of control, I took charge and ordered a mere five appetizers. “What is that?” the guys wanted to know when the Poutine ($5.95) landed on our table. This mound of really

good French fries topped with cheddar cheese curds and brown gravy is Canadian comfort food and a rare find in Rhode Island, I explained. I sensed a bit of skepticism as the two teens took a bite of the ooey-gooey fries, but then they went back for more – and then more, declaring the poutine to be “really, really good.” Another hit was the Thai Chicken Tenders appetizer ($7.95), boneless chicken tossed in a spicy peanut sauce. The meaty Chicken Wings ($6.95) were done up in a hot buffalo sauce, and the accompanying blue cheese dipping sauce cooled our palates. The Nachos Supreme ($7.95) consisted of a mountainous pile of tortilla chips, chili, cheese, and all the expected condiments. The fifth and final appetizer was strictly for me: a Homemade Stuffie ($2.25). At Dan’s, this Rhode Island staple is done right, with the correct amount of spice. In addition to these appetizers, we also grazed on a nicely done Greek Salad ($7.95) that was topped with banana peppers, Kalamata olives and feta cheese. It was interesting to see how diverse our dinner entrees were, proving that Dan’s menu offered the proverbial
something for everyone. John couldn’t resist the King Ranch Burger ($7.95), an 8-ounce Angus beef burger topped with barbecue sauce, bacon, cheese and onion rings. This came with fries, the basic variety – which seemed pretty tame after the poutine. John’s only negative comment was “not enough barbecue sauce.” His pal Brandon went with a large Steak and Cheese Hot Oven Grinder ($7.50), which definitely met with his approval. Jack opted for the Baked Scrod ($9.95), in a lemon-butter-wine sauce and topped with seasoned breadcrumbs. On the side were a twice-baked potato and freshtasting cole slaw. Jack admitted that he is quite picky about his food, and that this dish passed with flying colors. Brian had a cup of New England Clam Chowder ($2.95), followed by the Fish and Chips ($8.95). That chowder must have been very good because Brian kept it all to himself and refused to share even a sip. The cod fillets were lightly battered and then fried until crispy and golden brown. Basic fries and cole slaw rounded out his dinner. I went in a completely different taste direction by ordering the Barbecue Plate ($12.95), which consisted of a huge rack of ribs, boneless chicken basking in barbecue sauce, a baked potato and a vegetable medley. The ribs were tender and falling off the bone, as good as any I’ve had at any barbecue joint between here and Florida. The chicken was tender as well, although I would have preferred chicken legs or a bone-in breast. The baked potato was okay, but a bit soggy because it was wrapped in aluminum foil (one of my pet peeves in restaurants). The veggies were colorful but plain – I
should have gone with the above-average cole slaw. After a brief rest and plenty of conversation, we were ready for dessert – or so we thought. The desserts at Dan’s are huge and satisfying, so you might want to consider sharing. The wickedly decadent Chocolate Cake was super moist and frosted with a dark chocolate icing, then topped with plenty of chocolate morsels. The Raspberry-Coconut Cake was just as moist and dense, with a hint of raspberry filling and a scattering of sweet coconut flakes. But the best dessert on our table was the plate of DeepFried Oreo Cookies, which came with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. All I needed was one Oreo, still warm and soft in the center. Dan’s was essentially a burger joint for John, a deli for Brandon, a seafood restaurant for Jack and Brian, and a barbecue shack for me. From start to finish, we had experienced all kinds of global cuisine, dishes that originated in Canada, Thailand, Mexico, Greece and various regions of the United States. It was all pretty amazing, and all under one roof. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

December FROM PREVIOUS PAGE December 4-5 If you’re an impressionable child under the age of ten, it’s time to put this magazine down. Go now and practice your reading with the Wall Street Journal or something. There’s adult talk to be had here. The issue at hand? Santa’s workshop. Yessiree, that whole deal of busy elves feverishly spinning out customized products in a centralized location is a hard concept for anyone to wrap their brains around. That’s where the Shady Lea Mill Open Studios comes in handy. As home to over 40 artists, the craftspeople there are always creating magical gifts using their bare hands, from pottery to woodworking to sculpture to glass blowing. Sorta sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Bring a nonperishable food item and gently worn jackets and continue the spirit of the season. Noon-5pm. Storm dates: December 11-12. Free. Shady Lea Mill, 215 Shady Lea Road, North Kingstown. 290-7548, www.themillatshadylea.com. December 1 Go north to Trails of Memory in the Narragansett Country: Native and Settler Place-Traditions in Rhode Island after King Philip’s War and hear about Yale PhD candidate Christine DeLucia’s research on how EuroAmerican traditions began to erase Native peoples. 6:30-7:30pm. Free. RIHS Library, 121 Hope Street, Providence. 273-8107, www.rihs.org. December 1-15 Rejoice in the unique seasonal opportunity to experience the sheer variety of Christmas Carol productions, including this one-of-a-kind imagining adapted by, and starring, Rhode Island actor/director David Jepson, and only David Jepson. 8pm. $18, $15 ages 62 plus, $11 children. Christmas in the Village December 2-5: Jonesin’ for a quintessential New England Christmas? Before you subject your family to another epic recreation of a Norman Rockwell painting in minute detail – because, honestly, no one wants to hold that turkey platter again – please just head to Wickford. Here, the road to a simpler time still passes through and townspeople still gather on the village green – or in this case, Updike Park – to light the Christmas tree, the kick off event for the 25th annual Festival of Lights. The celebration, and nostalgia, continues throughout the weekend, with roaming Olde English Carolers, a living nativity, extended store hours, hayrides, tours of historical homes, live musical and dance performances and multiple visits from Santa, who motors on over to the town dock daily aboard the Sea Princess, led by floating kayakers, instead of the traditional flying reindeer. A Special Gift December 16-23: Oh, there’s a lot of gifts that you’d be down to receive this holiday season. Like the gift of not having to go to your spouse’s office party. Or the gift of finding boxed, wrapped packages under your tree that you didn’t have to fight the crowds at the mall to shop for. Or the gift of not spending a week on the twin bed in your old bedroom. And then there’s the multi-layered offering arriving via the second annual presentation of The Gift of the Magi. Here, you get the gift of sitting in the Towers, a historical landmark overlooking the ocean, as well as the gift of not driving to Providence for holiday cheer. But, as the original music backing the story of Jim and Della reveals, maybe the play’s gift of nothing is really the best gift of them all. $15. ful, skip the fire for something more delightful: a seasonal show. The arts don’t stop for a few downy flakes. So, strap on your snowshoes (or snow tires), hitch up your sleigh and brave the elements. You’ll find productions powerful enough to kindle even the most dormant of holiday spirits. Here’s a sampling. And don’t worry — nobody will touch those roasted chestnuts while you’re out. The strains of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker transport little Clara from a holiday party to the Palace of Sweets. Island Moving Company’s Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff sends the audience right along with her. As you follow Clara and the other characters from room to room, the mansion setting makes your journey through the ballet all the more magical. New this year, artistic director Miki Ohlsen re-choreographs the Snow Scene to take place in the ballroom and adds two new children’s roles: “Mini Mouse Kings” played by newcomers Daniel Leighton and Jonathan CorletoTejada. The show runs November 26-December 3, and features alternating casts that include professional dancers and scores of local dance students. Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. 8474470, www.islandmovingco.org To enjoy A Very British Christmas, there’s no need to travel across the pond or attempt to bake figgy pudding. On December 11–12, the Jamestown Community Chorus presents a holiday show teeming with traditional songs from the Oxford Book of Carols. Under the music direction of B.J. Whitehouse, the group also tackles

Gustav Holst’s “Christmas Day” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Christmas Carols.” Expect heavenly harmonic arrangements, swinging sing-alongs, antique sleigh bells and a reception with themed refreshments. Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-1574, www.jamestownri.com/chorus Celebrate the season with fiddles and fancy footwork as the Courthouse Center for the Arts presents Celtic Christmas (December 11-12). Performers in this musical extravaganza include two schools of Irish dancers, folk duo the Dram Boys, Irish fiddler Sheila Falls, and the family band Fishing with Finnegan. Enjoy a medley of musical genres exploring both Christian and Pagan takes on the advent of the winter solstice. Courthouse Center for the Arts, 3481 Kingstown Road, West Kingston. 7821018, www.courthousearts.org Gift giving gotcha stumped? Let The Gift of the Magi (December 16–19) remind you what means the most. After a sold-out run at Midtown Café in South Kingstown last winter, the Contemporary Theater Company brings their musical version of the classic O. Henry story to the Towers of Narragansett. Adapted by Brandon Michael Lowden and Dave Holtz, the original show features live music and stars Max Mathews, Nevan Richard, Laura Kennedy and more. The Towers, 35 Ocean Road, Narragansett. 218-0282, www.thecontemporarytheater.com If you’re too shy to go caroling, let the Chorus of Westerly sing for you. Their an-
nual Christmas Pops concert (December 19 at 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm) offers a wintry mix of modern and classic melodies. Backed by the Boston Festival Orchestra and conducted by George Kent, the intergenerational chorus enlivens songs like “White Christmas” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful” with the strength of 190 voices. In addition to an appearance by Santa Claus himself, the chorus takes listeners on “A Musicological Journey through the Twelve Days of Christmas” with a presentation that covers music history in a new and clever way. George Kent Performance Hall, 119 High Street, Westerly. 596-8663, www.chorusofwesterly.org Everyone loves A Christmas Carol, the story of how miserable old Ebenezer Scrooge finds a heart and soul. In Southern RI, you can catch two innovative adaptations of Dickens’ classic tale this month. First, Granite Theatre in Westerly presents a new one-man version, crafted by and starring artistic director David Jepson. Watch the versatile, veteran stage actor and director transform into Scrooge and all those who cross his miserly path (November 30-December 15). Then, the Academy Players of East Greenwich kick off their 56th season with an original musical rendition (December 15 – 19). Composed by Academy member Stephen DeCesare, the show maintains the feel of Dickens’ work but incorporates Broadway-style music and traditional carols. Richard Bento directs a local cast of 27, ranging in age from 5–60. The Granite Theatre, 1 Granite Street, Westerly. 596-2341, www.granitetheatre. com. Living in a fast paced
and career driven atmosphere, we all have a similar goal in mind. We are all striving to find our niche, our place among society, that one career where everything seems to click so that we can live our lives happily, successfully and with a purpose. Then there are those like Charlestown resident and Artists Collaborative of Westerly member Pete Ogle, who has found his niche in more than one specialty. Yes, you are allowed to be jealous. Receiving his masters of aeronautical engineering from RPI, Ogle has spent 30 years designing and developing aircraft structures, with his main focus being helicopters. So it may be somewhat surprising that Ogle is also an exceptionally talented mosaic artist. In actuality, however, it is not that hard to believe. As with engineering, Ogle enjoys the “mechanical process of building a complex piece” that his mosaics require – thus one specialty complements the other. “I got started in mosaics by doing some simple tile work for some coffee tables using tumbled marble, where I also included inlays of sand dollars and scallop shells,” Ogle recalls of his first forays into the craft. “As the real things were too fragile, I did small mosaics of marble. I liked the results so I progressed to even larger and more complex projects.” Yet, what is unexpected is that Ogle had no previous experience with mosaic artwork, or other forms of art for that matter. Other than reading books, he took a one-week program on classical mosaics, which was offered in Ravenna, Italy. From the looks of his pieces, it seems the course was well worth it. From mirrors bordered with flowers and seashells to stained glass windows depicting herons and

He explains, “We live along the shore because we love its natural beauty and wildlife. It is the inspiration for much of what I do.” Although this art form is unique and can take on various types of scenes and styles, it is not for those without patience. This passion can require a great amount of time and effort. According to Ogle, projects such as these can typically take up to two months to complete, depending on the size and complexity of the piece. As Ogle summarizes it, “This is not an art form for those looking for instant gratification.”
At this time, Ogle is working on a large wall table piece that illustrates a lovely grapevine pattern. He will include glass grape bunches that are fused and fitted together, as well as painted stained glass leaves that will be set on a background of tumbled marble pieces, which he will assemble using traditional mosaic techniques. To allow some back lighting, Ogle will bring the mosaic together on a thick sheet of glass while his choices of color, texture and shape will further develop the image. While you are waiting for him to finish this piece, you may want to view Ogle’s work at the Artist Cooperative Gallery of Westerly or through his website, www.designinstone.com.

Celebrate with Cookies It’s about that time of year: everywhere you go there is likely to be a plate of delicious, holiday-themed cookies within arm’s reach. We know how tempting they are. (So tempting, in fact, that an anonymous cookie thief within our own office pilfered one from the unopened package before the taste test even began.) However, if you don’t have hours to spend

mixing, kneading, baking and frosting, or simply lack the skills to even consider it, here are some options that will make you the hit of the holiday party.
Here’s a cookie just begging to be dipped in a cup of coffee or milk. This treat – a Baci di Dama, which is an Italian almond shortbread sandwich with just the right amount of Nutella filling – earned rave reviews all around. 47 Railroad Avenue, Westerly. 348-7055

Cap’n Jacks This chocolate-dipped banana crescent was very moist and packed with lots of fruit flavor. The dark chocolate was a nice complement to the banana, and we all agreed this would also be a great cookie to enjoy with coffee. 706 Succotash Road, Wakefield. www.capnjacksrestaurant.com

Scrumptions By far the most visually appealing offering, these ornate sugar cookies looked like they’d be just as likely to wind up hanging from a Christmas tree as they would on a platter. The subtle vanilla frosting was an excellent accent for the lemony base. 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich. www.scrumptions.com
We were ready to accuse this chocolate-dipped Oreo of cheating, as it wasn’t an original cookie, but then we bit into the delicious treat, robed in just the right amount of milk chocolate, and all was forgiven. 219 Main Street, East Greenwich. www.chocolatedelicacy.com
