‘Tis the Season for Giving There’s a real joy in the traditions that happen at this time of year: the ritual of decorating the house with heirloom decorations, baking your mother’s cookie recipes, putting milk and cookies out for Santa every Christmas Eve. While there are some parts of the season I’ll never give up – like hanging the Advent calendar tapestry my grandmoth-
er sewed for me when I was very young – I love to get creative and put a twist on how I approach the holidays every year. This month, we present a Guide to Giving, with creative twists on how to wrap gifts, where to get unique edible creations, and how to give back to those in need. We also answer the annual question of who gets holi-

day tips, and what to give them. Between all of your own merrymaking (and shopping, and wrapping, and cooking) this month, there’s a lot going on around South County – from annual art sales to a unique perspective on holiday cheer from the Contemporary Theatre Company. Take some time out to enjoy it. Happy holidays. -Julie
I just have to thank you, Linda Beaullieu and your staff for such a wonderful cover photo (“Home Cooking,” November 2011). I have never been photogenic in my lifetime and I have never been more pleased. Thanks again for the great opportunity. Tasty Wishes, Linda Miranda Congratulations on last month’s outstanding issue (November 2011)! Thank you for inviting me to participate. (“Home Cooking,” November 2011) Jeannie Serpa
For Art’s Sake I’m Ken MacDonald, the sculptor you featured in the November Art View section. While I appreciate being in your magazine and the accuracy of the text, the headline “Man Vs. Metal,” implies I am “fighting” or in opposition with the metal, rather than working in harmony with it. The same would be true of an artist who paints or works in clay – you would not say, “Man (or Woman) Vs. Canvas,” or “Man Vs. Clay.” Metal is no different from other media when it comes to the artist’s relationship with the media he or she uses. It may take more energy and tools to shape, bend, join, etc., but

A Thing of Beauty A staff member just dropped a copy of So Rhode Island on my desk with the feature on the Maxwell Mays refuge (“A Legacy of Land,” November 2011). It is beautiful and the story really captures the essence of the place. Thank you so much for helping us get the word out
about this new refuge. I understand the trails have been quite busy. Many thanks for such a lovely piece.

Fly the Coop Local eggs come to your backyard
Photography: Marylou Butler
Chickens coming home to
roost used to be a metaphor. Now they’re literally roosting in many South County backyards as the Backyard Chicken Movement goes local. Chickens are low maintenance, relatively inexpensive to keep, fun to observe and produce great eggs. This movement has inspired Backyard Poultry Magazine, at least two websites, innumerable Facebook pages, and a back-to-the-land ethic in line with our organic time. A couple of local men, Phil Larson of Jamestown and Efrem Bromberg of Exeter, are committed to their chickens and like the give-and-take action they get in return. Efrem suggests, “If you’ve got any kind of farm fantasy, a few chickens can easily make it come true.” Set them up in a coop, provide some kind of run for them to go scratching in, kick back and observe the action. You’ll be amazed at what they dig up. Any animal lover can appreciate a chicken’s delirious agitation when you deliver a pail full of seeded fruit or vegetable rinds for breakfast. Phil adds, “Shake a bucket of sunflower seeds and watch.”
Then there are those eggs. Phil, who was a chef for 35 years, says, “There’s nothing like fresh eggs, especially if you poach them, or use them in a hollandaise sauce.” Rhode Island Reds, our state’s official chicken, are famous for their big eggs and small breasts, which, incidentally help keep the chickens in the backyard and off Sunday platters. Nurturing healthy, happy chickens is another reason to fowl up your back-

yard. Commercial chicken warehouses are notorious in their drive for production over any other considerations. A half million birds cramped in, going stir crazy, is not unusual. Whatever care exists for the birds translates to hefty doses of antibiotics to guard against disease. And what about growth stimulants? Those enormous chicken breasts in your supermarket are implants. So why not go organic and do a little something for
your karma while you poach that cagefree egg. Phil says he gets an egg a day from each chicken on good days. Things change with shifts in the weather, and, of course, when the chickens age. Then you have to decide to keep the chicken as a treasured pet – or make soup. If you’re sensitive to endangered species, several chicken breeds are on the list. Redcaps, Chanteclers and Campines, to name a few, are in trouble. Raise some of them. If you want to confirm the size and flavor of their eggs first, well, that’s up to you. It’s not all poached eggs and toast, of course. When chickens molt they’re hardly a joy to behold (thus the term, “revolting molting”). And the natural pecking order of birds is unattractive in general and especially so with chickens. Then there are predators: dogs, fisher cats, foxes and raccoons (thus, the coop.) However, the pluses far outweigh the minuses – and think of all our county fairs. Bring your prize chicken with you. You’ll be amazed at all the chicken criteria that exist for judges. www.backyardchickens.com -Bob Cipriano

The Rhode Island Sewing Network, the nonprofit Project Undercover and sponsor Ocean State Job Lot have teamed up in order to piece together the world’s largest sock. Not only are they breaking a Guinness World Record, but they are also bringing awareness about the increasing need for undergarments such as socks, underwear and diapers among impoverished children. With over 40 volunteers from the Rhode Island Sewing Network, the sock will be an estimated 32’x17’, trumping the original biggest sock record of 16’x14’. Project Undercover is an organization dedicated to providing needy children with socks and underwear, and this world record is its biggest effort yet to raise
one person who thinks he or she knows everything there is about Rhode Island. Truth is they are missing some interesting facts from their trivia arsenal. This holiday, help them and the Westerly Armory out with the new book, Little Rhody and the Other 49, by Roberta Mudge Humble. The book is Humble’s fourth and contains over 300 full-color photos; it’s also packed with interesting facts that compare Rhode Island with the other 49 states. Prefer something more competitive than a book? Then try the challenge of Humble’s new Rhode Island trivia game, Rhode Scholar. Based on her previous Rhode Test trivia game, Scholar has upped the ante for difficultly, with 60 percent of the game based on Rhode Island Villages and National Register Sites. The sock will be unveiled and measured by Guinness on December 2 at the Rhode Island Convention Center, where it will hang from the third floor all the way down to the first. There will be food, music, sword swallowing (yes, sword swallowing) and a special appearance by the Big Nazo puppets. Arts
on the Island
The Jamestown Arts Center makes its big debut By Ken Shane • Photography by Marylou Butler
Over the course of five days at the end of September, you could have attended the opening of a marine photography exhibit that featured a slide show presented by renowned Newport maritime photographer Onne van der Wal, viewed an international short film festival or marveled at a performance of Shakespeare’s Richard III. Was all of this taking place at a prestigious New York City museum or theater? No, it was taking place right here in southern Rhode Island at the recently opened Jamestown Arts Center. The conversation about opening an arts center in Jamestown began on a beach, as many things do in what is, after all, an island community. Four years ago, co-founders Kate Petrie and Elizabeth Congdon were discussing the lack of local art opportunities for their children. “When we moved to Jamestown I thought it was going to be easy to find art classes for the kids,” Petrie says. “It
wasn’t really. I used to try to get art in school programs going and it was always tricky. There were very few places that you could just come together and make something.” On that day the friends decided that having an arts center in James-
to find was a home. A location where artists, and there are so many artists in Jamestown, could come together,” Petrie says. In the interim, the newly formed Jamestown Arts Center, still without a permanent home, rented the

Part of our mission is to be part of the economic development of Rhode Island.” –Lisa Randall town was a great idea, and they agreed to try to make it happen. They put together a board of directors, and set out to make their dream a reality. “What we were really trying
Jamestown Gallery storefront space downtown. It was there that the annual Collaboration Show began, in which artists of all ages and disciplines are invited to submit work in
a 12” x 12” square format. The show is held each April and has since become something of a community tradition. Meanwhile, the search for a permanent space continued. Several buildings were considered, including Jamestown’s old town hall, but in that instance issues with Native American burial grounds could not be resolved. Finally, a new look at local real estate listings revealed that a former boat repair garage was on the market. “We walked in here and it was an epiphany,” Petrie says. “Every single space made sense. We couldn’t give up. It was so perfect, so right.” It took two years to develop a prospect list and meet with people who might be interested in contributing money to the purchase of the new building. “It was basically going to everybody asking for money,” Petrie recalls. “People would go running when December 2011 | SO RHODEISLAND

they saw us with our blue folders,” Petrie admits, laughing. “We would sit down with people and explain the project. Even though we had a few people who didn’t get it, most of those people eventually came around. And it was fun bringing them around.” One interesting aspect of the early development process was that the board of directors was entirely female. According to Petrie, it wasn’t intentional. “There have always been men involved on different levels – the building committee and that type of thing – but the people who came forward with the time and energy, the desire and the passion to actually be on the board and put a lot of time into it happened to be women,” says Lisa Randall, Executive Director of the Arts Center. There are currently three male board members. Randall was hired at the end of 2009, in the final stages of fundraising for the money needed to close on the building on December 5 of that year. A key moment came when an interest-free, $300,000 loan was secured with the proviso that it be paid back within one year. When added to other money raised, there were sufficient funds to cover the

building’s $600,000 selling price. Much of 2010 and was spent raising money to pay off the loan, which was accomplished late last year. The newly purchased building needed a nearly complete renovation, and Peter Twombly, of Newport’s Estes Twombly was hired to do the architectural work. One major problem was that the building was listing. A chain arrangement had to be installed, and each week the building was winched in a little more until it was structurally sound. While the professionals were at work, the Arts Center hosted a series of volunteer days. Members of the community would come by and roll up their sleeves, put on facemasks and begin to deal with issues like the ancient insulation, and the walls badly in need of fresh paint. “It was a really good bonding experience,” Petrie enthuses. “We had a great time doing it. It was very rewarding, everybody getting involved and getting it done. And then, when our people did that over all those months, the building then became their baby, their sweat and blood, and their love.” While the work was going on, the board realized that they were going to be a little short in their effort to repay the one-year loan on time. They
put together a business plan and approached four banks, certain that the financial institutions weren’t going to be interested in speaking with them. As it turned out, all four banks made loan offers based on the business plan, the projected cash flow and the enormous amount of community support the project already had. With a small mortgage and a line of credit, the Jamestown Arts Center was ready to face the future. Not only was the economic house in order, in addition to the large performance/gallery space at the rear of the building, there were new rooms for ceramics, painting and figure drawing. July 3 marked the opening of “The Big Show,” a display of largescale paintings and sculpture. It was the first official presentation at the Arts Center. This past summer, the Arts Center presented its first comprehensive menu of arts classes. The program proved to be an enormous success, outpacing all expectations. Winter classes will begin in January. The Arts Center also played host to the Rhode Island International Film Festival for two nights in August, and the film program is continuing with monthly screenings. A collaboration with the Brown University/Trinity Rep MFA program has resulted in acclaimed Shakespearean performances, and another collaboration with Newport’s alternative East Bay Met School is bringing visual and performing arts students to the Arts Center daily. “We’re building up the fine arts aspect of the Arts Center, and expanding it to include creative industries,” Randall says. “The creative industry sector is the only sector of the Rhode Island economy that grew last year. A lot of things are not happening in the schools, and that’s an incredible
missed opportunity. Part of our mission is to be part of the economic development of Rhode Island.” According to Bruce Keiser, Jamestown Town Administrator, “The Jamestown Arts Center adds immeasurably to the quality of life in Jamestown. The variety of visual and performing arts programs targeted to all ages greatly enriches the community. We are very fortunate to have local artists with the vision and commitment to make this wonderful facility a reality.” In early December, the Jamestown Arts Center will host a Holiday Small Works and Trunk Show. The event will feature artworks by more than 25 artists, each priced at $250 or less, as well as a trunk show at which local creative artisans will sell their wares. The opening reception for the show is Friday, December 2 from 5-8pm, and the sale will continue on Saturday, December 3 from 10am-5:30pm. There holiday happenings will continue on December 16 with the Holiday Cheer Open House For the Whole Family from 5pm-7pm. Children will be invited to create their own decorations which can be used to trim the tree at the Arts Center, or they may take their creations home for use on their own tree. For people of all ages interested in creating their own holiday crafts, workshops will be held at the Center from November 24-December 16.

Give Gratefully A handy guide for who (and how much) to tip at the holidays By Samantha Gaus • Illustration by Alli Coate When the holiday season
rolls around every year, we have a million things to do. Shopping for loved ones, cooking meals, planning family parties and staying on top of day-to-day responsibilities can be a lot to deal with. Having so many things to remember, it’s understandable when something or someone important gets overlooked, but not this year. Holiday tipping is incredibly important, but it seems like a lost tenet in our fast paced lives. It is about saying thank you; even if your gift-giving budget is tight, find a creative way to show your appreciation. To make things easier, here is a guide for who to tip and how much so you can be sure that everyone gets a piece of your holiday cheer. Letter Carrier: This is a tricky one because there are rules in place for the United States Postal Service that restrict what letter carriers can accept. It seems that many people still know to tip their mailman this time of year, but what exactly is allowed? You may give snacks and beverages or perishable gifts that are not part of a meal (so forget about passing off your leftover tuna casserole), but if the item is large, like a fruit basket or platter of cookies, it is supposed to be shared with the whole branch. Small gifts that are clearly no more than $20 in value, such as a travel mug or a scented candle, are permitted – but they are strict about limiting the amount spent, so don’t go overboard. Cash, checks, gift cards or anything else considered a form of currency are not acceptable, so it is a good idea to plan ahead to find something within these guidelines that you know they will appreciate. Maintenance Worker or Superintendent: If you live in a large residential building, there are a few key people whom you see regularly; they are the ones fixing your garbage disposal, letting you in when you get locked out and climbing ladders to shovel snow off the roof. Often times you form personal relationships with these workers, so it is nice to have a chance to show them that you notice all they do. If you go the cash route, $20-$80 is standard, so any gift you give should also be somewhere in that range - but with no rules in place you can feel free to give more if they have gone above and beyond for you this year.
Here’s A Tip For You Regular babysitter
One evening’s pay and a small gift from your kids.
Day care provider
A gift from you or $25-70 for each staff member and a small gift from your kids.
Live-in help
One week to one month of pay as a cash tip, plus a gift from you.
Private nurse
A thoughtful gift from you.
Housekeeper/Cleaner
Up to the amount of one week’s pay and/or a small gift.
Nursing home employees A gift that could be shared by the staff (flowers or food items). Personal trainer
Up to the cost of one session or a gift.
Massage therapist
Up to the cost of one session or a gift.
Pet groomer
Up to the cost of one session or a gift.
Dog walker
Up to one week’s pay or a gift.
Beauty Salon Staff or Barber: If you are a regular at a salon the suitable gift is an added tip, $10-60 for each staff member who works with you. You can give on the higher end if you are only seeing a few people, and if you go to a hairdresser who works alone the standard amount is the cost of one haircut. As always, a gift is also customary and if you spend a lot of time talking to them in their chair you may even know exactly what he or she would like.
Personal caregiver
Between one week to one month’s salary or a gift.
Pool cleaner
The cost of one cleaning to be split among the crew.
Garage attendants
$10-30 or a small gift.
Newspaper delivery boy
$10-30 or a small gift.
Tipping Advice
Package deliverer
Small gift in the $20 range. Most delivery companies discourage or prohibit cash gifts.
Doorman
$15-80. $15 or more each for multiple doormen, or a gift.
Handyman
$15 to $40.
School Teacher: It is nice to involve your children for this; it can teach them about giving at a young age and they might enjoy feeling like they helped. Cash is out of the question here – it just doesn’t suit the relationship. A small gift is ideal. Some good ideas include classroom supplies, books, a picture frame or a gift basket.
Remember that it is nice to always include a handwritten card or note thanking them for all they do, no matter what the gift. It is fine if it isn’t in your budget this year to give an extra tip; a handwritten note alone will make anyone smile and it never hurts to let someone know you thought of them. If you believe that not tipping will result in poor service in the future, you might consider a change, as it is never mandatory to include this holiday bonus. We hope this guide will remind you what the holidays are all about: love, appreciation and spreading joy. So just give what you know will make someone’s day.
Trash/Recycling collectors $10-30 each. Yard/Garden worker
$20-50 each.

Give Creatively By Julie Tremaine • Photos by Marylou Butler
Nothing looks more beautiful than a pile of impeccably wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree – but you definitely don’t need to be Martha Stewart to make that happen. Here are some creative gift wrapping ideas from local boutiques to mix up your giving this year.
Gail Desrosier, The Eagle’s Nest Gallery Try making the wrapping part of the gift. I’ve used a wine bag and filled it with a bottle of wine. Use a stocking and fill it with small gifts. My mother used to use actual fabric to wrap gifts. At our house, we save the funnies from the newspaper throughout the year. It’s a funny thing we do at the holidays with smaller gifts. Our shopping bags at the store are biodegradable and our boxes and paper are recycled. Often we’ll take one of our paper bags and add colorful recycled tissue and a bow to make a gift out of it. The Eagle’s Nest Gallery offers three or four wrapping options for the holidays. They ask for a minimum $1.50 donation to the Wounded Warriors Foundation. 50 High Street, Westerly. 5965386, www.gallerygiftswesterly.com
Joanna Papineau, Sun Up Gallery To give greener gifts this year, consider using newspaper as wrapping, or turning brown grocery bags inside out and decorating them yourself using rubber stamps. Top a package with fresh berries or greens for naturally beautiful (and biodegradable) embellishment. Use an ornament to top a package. It’s an added gift and takes the place of a bow that normally would be thrown away. The Sun Up Gallery uses recycled boxes and recycled craft paper to gift wrap. 95 Watch Hill Road, Westerly. 596-0800, www.sunupgallery.com
Sue Snow, Zero Wampum Our signature polka dot boxes and paper are the opposite colors from each other. We dress up plain bags with ribbons, tissue and stickers. We try to coordinate the item to the wrapping – the ribbon on the outside will match the gift on the inside. Try matching your wrapping paper to your decorations. We have three little Christmas trees in the store and we’re coordinating the gifts under them with the decorations – like owls, which are so popular this year. We sell Vera Bradley and Lilly Pulitzer wrapping paper and gift bags, which are cheery, colorful choices. We‘ve got a lot of Christmas paper. It’s not your average paper – we try to buy very unique choices. Zero Wampum coordinates a polka dot printed box with corresponding wrapping paper for their own gifts, and offers plenty of creative wrapping options in the store. 161 Old Tower Hill Road, Wakefield. 789-7172, www. zerowampum.com

filled with holidays, presents, feasts and joy (despite the onset of cold winter weather). But there are many Rhode Islanders who are unable to enjoy these blissful traditions due to everyday struggles that are economic, physical or social. This year, be a Saint Nicholas to someone in need by giving time, money or goods to these excellent organizations. The Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale has a name befitting its provisions to local people; the mission of the Jonnycake Center is to provide basic necessities to those in need. On December 14-15 from 9:30am-3pm and ‘til 2:30pm on the 16th, volunteers will be needed for “Santa’s Workshop.” After receiving donations of unwrapped toys, volunteers will sort the donations and escort clients to gifts that are of their children’s age range. Volunteers will work in three-hour shifts. Also on December 16, volunteers are needs to deliver holiday meals to seniors from 9am-1pm. For more information, go to www.jonnycakecenter.org or call 789-1559. The Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale is located at 1231 Kingstown Road. Another local Jonnycake Center is the Bradford Jonnycake Center of Westerly. This nonprofit provides food, clothing, household goods and emergency financial assistance to qualified residents in the South County area, and they have exciting volunteer opportunities for the holiday season. Volunteers are needed in their food pantry to prepare and distribute Christmas food baskets. The Thrift Store needs help processing gifts and moving them to a staging area. Volunteers will be “Santa’s Elves” and are needed to prepare the gifts for distribution to families. Also, the Jonnycake Center is looking for those who would like to be matched with a family in need of help buying gifts for their children under 18. For details and dates on the Food Pantry or Thrift Store, contact Steve at 377-8069 ext. 3 or email volunteer@jonnycake.org. For family matches, contact Jennifer at 377-8069 ext. 1. South County Habitat for Humanity builds affordable, simple and decent housing for those in need. These homes are produced almost entirely by volunteers. Currently four new houses are being constructed on Old North Road in Kingston. Volunteers are always needed and no construction experience is required. Build a gingerbread house to be displayed in various shops on Main Street in Wakefield throughout December and vote on your favorite. Voting costs only $1 and ballot stuffing is encouraged. Give to Habitat for Humanity in this fun and creative way. The Habitat ReStore and offices are located at 1555 Shannock Road, Shannock. A name like Slice of Heaven might be hard to live up to, but that is just what the Jamestown restaurant, bakery and catering service does. The first unique quality of the store is that everything is made from scratch, rarely found in today’s restaurants or bakeries when mixes are readily available. From the pastries, to the soups and sandwiches, the menu items are wholesome, homemade foods, creating the perfect meal away from home. Co-owners Steve and Maria Liebhauser opened a simple bakery in 2001 and have since expanded into full breakfast and lunch, and soon, dinner menus. “When we first opened up, I said there was no way we were doing breakfast,” Steve says. “Then we started doing brunch on the weekends and it was clear [breakfast] was going to be a big booster.” Breakfast is now the store’s most popular time. Since then, it has branched out to include lunch and eventually dinner. This year, the store celebrated its tenth anniversary and with it, a large batch of new ideas, such as making the menu more vegetarian friendly. “We have a lot more vegetarian options available,” Steve notes. “If they want the chicken quesadilla, we can substitute the chicken with tempeh.” As the seasons change, don’t expect to find the same things on the menu. “We are trying to keep the menu seasonal. We do a more hearty fair going into the cooler months,” he adds. This season offers a new variety of options including lentils, quinoa and acorn squash. The menu items range from the well-known omelet, to the more adventurous tastes of the Ham and Brie Panino. The bakery offers muffins, tarts, cakes, cookies and much more. For events, cakes can be customized and desert platters are available. The store also offers a selection of coffee and espresso drinks from gourmet teas to chilled coffees. Beer and wine is also available with lunch. Alongside the wonderful food are the amazing services. Slice of Heaven offers catering, Wi-Fi, and excellent customer care. Slice of Heaven is open from 6am-3pm daily.

I sland A nimal Jamestown Designs Admit it, you dread Christmas shopping. Sure we all it’s the thought that counts, but nothing beats seeing someone’s face light up at the perfect gift. There is always that one person for whom it’s difficult to buy. That’s where Jamestown Designs comes in. With their slogan, “Where you are sure to find the unusual,” and their made in America mantra, you never have to hear a fake thank you again. Jamestown Designs has been a family owned business for the last 40 years. The business started with a mother, Helen Anderson (who turned 100 this year), and her daughters the current owners, Deb Swistak and Carol Anderson. The stores make strides when it comes to supporting locality and boasts its community spirit. Swistak says, “We make an effort to have made in America and local items that are unique, unusual and beautiful, things you won’t find in [other stores].” They purchase from local artists and businesses, curating a unique collection. Jamestown Designs carries gifts and decorative accents encompassing things like blown glass ornaments and vases, work from local artists, and a well-stocked jewelry collection, almost all of which is beautifully hand-made. This selection makes it almost too easy to find the perfect gift, but the staff is always ready to help those who are still having trouble finding something just right. “We are problem solvers when you have a gift you want to buy for that special someone,” Swistak offers. “We sell the functional, beautiful or frivolous, and will find you the perfect gift.” The store also features fine art from local and American artists, including media from sculpture to oil paint. Lois Hollingsworth
Festive Decorations Lois Hollingsworth on dressing to impress through the holiday party season
Photography: Amy Amerantes
There are so many events and holiday parties to attend this month. What’s a look that’s dressy but can go from work to an evening function? We’re mostly a dress store. We have a lot of dresses that have some metallics that run through them. Wear it with a little sweater and boots for the day. At night, dress it up with some dressier earrings and take the jacket off. There are some beautiful sweater dresses, too, that you can pull off for evening as long as you choose a great color. Zuzu’s Petals is known for carrying designer dresses that are hard to find locally. What are some of them? We always say that if it looks like a department store dress, we don’t want it here. We have to love the fabric and the style. We sell a lot of Nicole Miller, Milly and Shoshanna. They’re just beautiful, and they can touch on a trend, but they have a great sense of the classic about them. With those, if you go into your closet and you reach for a dress, you really still want to wear it. When someone gets into a dress that’s the dress for her, it just shows her off so nicely. We always
strive to have the dress work for you, so you’ll still love it next year. We also have the more contemporary version of Lily Pulitzer, which is nothing like the old Lily Pulitzer. It’s very Audrey Hepburn, it’s very Jackie O.
without it looking tired? You can always go with a little black dress and change your shoes and accessories. If you get very specific in a dress, and it’s so memorable, it’s going to be hard to make it look different. But if you have some basic beautiful cuts, you can wear great necklaces with them and that would change the look.
What’s a trend right now in eveningwear that we should know about? There are some lovely evening sweater dresses, but I think it’s more just beautiful, ladylike dresses. We have some one shoulder looks, some lower backs, a little bit of leopard print that’s still very dressy. We don’t dive into it, but we touch on it. That’s something you can get tired of so quickly. Lace is just beautiful this season. We just got this gorgeous black and cream Shoshanna dress with a low draped back that’s the perfect little dress. We have emerald and ruby Nicole Miller metallic dresses that are really the height of holiday wear.
Anything else that we should know about? We’re carrying some shoes and wraps now. We also always have markdowns, and we have the Zuzu’s Card. It’s marked in $50 increments, and every time you fill one up you go home with a $50 gift card. If you friend us on Facebook, you can see the new dresses we upload each week that we’ve gotten in. People can write in to see which store the dress is in, or ask us to get a specific size at a specific location.
I always hate wearing the same dress to two big events, but buying a new dress for every one I attend is unrealistic. What do you recommend? How often can you wear a fancy dress

Magical Mystery Tour The next generation of Southern RI’s most unique shopping destination For decades, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory in Charlestown has been a one-of-a kind shopping destination for visitors young and old, and now, under the ownership of David and Linda Turano, is as impressive as ever. Housed on the same property as its original farmstead location dating back to the early 1800s, the Factory is rich in history and full of surprises. The main attraction is a cluster of shops offering a variety of unique gifts and trinkets. Small Axe Productions, opened by Mr. Turano and friends Jack Wright and Peter Esak in 1974, is adorned with the products of crafty and skilled artists, namely, the stained glass work of Wright, blown glass of Esak and pottery of Turano. Jewelry, clothing, tapestry, musical instruments and handcrafted gems from around the world also fill the shop. Other stores include Frills, an emporium of beautiful clothing, jewelry and gifts; the General Store, featuring candy and toys and fashioned after the original Umbrella Factory store; and Axiom, selling vintage eyewear and locally-made organic candles. Alongside the eccentric shops is a sight not to be overlooked: the Umbrella Factory Gardens, operated by talented horticulturists Patrick and Erin Shellman. A walk through the gardens and collection of greenhouses, which display an array of gorgeous plants and flowers,
The General Store at the Fantastic Umbrella Factory
is a peaceful, enchanting experience. Lovely perennial flower gardens and many interesting species of trees (like the Umbrella Pine and Dawn Redwood) are scattered throughout the property. Also on the grounds, and a popular attraction for children, is a pen of friendly animals: a few goats, emus and chickens, and a plethora of ducks, all of which can be fed by visitors. Because you are bound to be hungry after perusing the shops and admiring the gardens, Small Axe Café (a BYOB establishment) offers modestly priced meals to suit every appetite. “Chef Mark Pedola and his partner Gino Turano serve up some of the best meals in Rhode Island,” enthuses David Turano. From vegetarian and fish to poultry and
beef, all of the dishes are organic and all of the products local. (Many of the vegetables are even grown on site.) The Fantastic Umbrella Factory’s charm, beauty and curiosity make it one of Rhode Island’s hidden gems. A fun, unique experience for the entire family, there is bound to be something new each time you visit. “We are working hard to make the Umbrella Factory an enjoyable and affordable destination for locals and visitors alike,” says David Turano. Although you probably won’t find too many umbrellas, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory provides an alternative shopping experience with uniquely pleasant surroundings. 4820 Old Post Road, Charlestown. 364-6616.

The Kenneth Cote Renewal Center is in the spirit of giving back and will be assisting with two local fundraisers to help Rhode Islanders in need. Now through the end of the year they will be accepting donated non-perishable food with a special focus on protein-rich item such as canned soups, peanut butter, tuna, beans, etc. They will also be running a Giving Tree campaign to support woman and children of abuse; drop off an unwrapped gift for a local shelter or if you can’t think of what to get, cash donations will be used by employees to shop for the perfect item. Make your holiday giving about helping others this year; it is sure to put you in good spirits. 333 Main Street, East Greenwich. 8842810, www.kennethcote.com -Samantha Gaus

Owner Jeff Cooke and Chef Rob Dennis
You have an enormous menu with a lot to choose from – if it was my first time in your restaurant, what dish would you recommend I order? Rob: Our most popular dish is the Drunken Scallops in sweet vermouth – our guests love it. A couple of other signature items would be our Baked Stuffed Lobster and our Duckington, slow roasted duck wrapped Wellington style. It seems like the food at Mariner Grille is strongly inspired by the seasons. What can we expect this season? Rob: December presents some limitations in Rhode Island. However, pumpkin, beets and different squashes make their way into winter dishes. We have brought back some classics like our Harvest Chicken or Pear and Gorgonzola salad. You can see a few new twists as well, like our Kona Filet with a Kahlua glaze and Harvest Ravioli, butternut ravioli with shrimp, lobster, sage and brandy sauce.
What fish is better in cold weather? Rob: During the colder months Rhode Island’s shellfish and cold water, hard-shelled lobster markets are still vibrant, along with winter fluke. Tell me a little about your specialty cocktails. Do they change based on the season? Jeff: Our specialty cocktails are definitely seasonally driven. Current examples are a pumpkin mudslide, pumpkin martini or a butternut squash infused vodka with a cinnamon stick, cardamom, vanilla and olives. Pumpkin martinis and coffee drinks are a big hit, and cranberry and apple or butternut infused vodkas are popular. Do you have any special events going this month? Jeff: On Monday, December 12 from 5-7pm, we’ll be hosting a Wine and Cheese Reception for Children’s Friend, a provider of services to
Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children. Bring an unwrapped toy, an item of warm clothing, gift card or cash contribution and enjoy wine and appetizers. What is the atmosphere like at your restaurant? Jeff: We have live music Thursday through Saturday, great bartenders, like Chris Byrne and Mike Healy, and a friendly wait staff. Rob and his staff are also committed to fresh, seasonally inspired creations. Do you have anything special planned for New Year’s Eve? Jeff: New Year’s Eve will bring great specials like two-pound baked stuffed lobsters, prime rib, rack of lamb and more, along with live music to help ring in the New Year. Jeff Cooke is an owner and Rob Dennis is the chef at Mariner Grille, 142 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 284-3282, www.marinergrille.com December 2011 | SO RHODEISLAND

No ordinary cookbook, this is a collection of more than 100 recipes that restore and heal people through nutritional balancing. Feldman knows what she’s talking about through firsthand experience. Joy refused to accept this fate and started researching how to improve her health. A new physician familiar with the concept of nutritional balancing recommended a new diet. Within a few months, Joy was off her debilitating medications. Within a year, she was her former healthy self. Nutritional balancing is a method of healing that draws upon Western medical science and ancient healing wisdom with diet being a critical aspect. In brief, the recommended diet includes cooked vegetables (preferably steamed and organic), natural, organic, grass-fed meats and certain Joy Feldman fish, with a minimum of sugars, sweets and processed foods. Other suggested foods include organic meals not only healthy but delicious as corn products, wheat-free grains such well. What a wonderful holiday gift for as brown rice, full-fat dairy (raw, if posthose you really care about. sible), certain fats and oils, a minimal amount of fruit, and carrot juice. The dinner menu ($7 to $27) offers that little something extra, such as a Caesar salad with avocado dressing, a seafood vegetable stew, Chilean sea bass prepared three different ways, Caribbean steak, and grilled French cut pork chops with papaya onion chutney. Besos is the Spanish word for “kisses,” which seems appropriate because I’m already in love with the exciting food served there. For more info, call 398-8855. Woodhouse Fire N Coal Pizza has opened at 401 Main Street in Wakefield, where Main Street Fish Market used to be located. Two Narragansett natives, Dan Cunningham and Dave Turnbull, have opened Ernie T’s Wee Friendly Pub on Route 138 in the Wyoming section of Richmond. The new restaurant is named after Turnbull’s father, Ernie, who lives in Narragansett. Dan is the head groundskeeper for the New York Yankees, and Dave is a local chef. Their pub will serve lunch and dinner plus breakfast on weekends. A full bar is on the premises along with seven flat-screen TVs. The décor will feature trophies, jerseys and footballs from local sports teams, the Chariho Cowboys and the Chariho Chargers. For more info, call 491-9801, or visit www.erniets.com. The Pump House Restaurant & Pub at 1464 Kingstown Road in Peace Dale closed temporarily, but is set to reopen under new ownership. It was on the market for the past year. The Stuff of Legend A cozy, neighborhood eatery by the river sits on the banks of the Pawcatuck River, which winds from Worden Pond in South Kingstown in a southwesterly direction through the villages of Kenyon, Carolina and Bradford. The river lies between the town of Westerly and the Pawcatuck section of Stonington, finally emptying into Little Narragansett Bay off Watch Hill. The Mermaid Café is filled with nautical décor and colorful mermaid knick-knacks. Delicate glass mermaids hang from 12 ceiling lights, the kind you’d find down below in an old seafaring ship. On the walls are old photos of sailing ships built in the Westerly area in the 1800s. Conch shells sit on the windowsills with a view of the Viking Marina, a quiet boat yard at the head of the Pawcatuck. You can “dock and dine” at the Mermaid Café, which has a 60-foot dock set aside for small boats. That’s something we can look forward to next summer. Until then, we’ll have to park our car in the crushed clamshell parking lot when we stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The bright and airy café is the work of Carolyn Burkhardt, a Watch Hill native who has worked in area restaurants. This family-friendly restaurant has a menu built on fresh, seasonal and regional foods, with an emphasis on seafood from local waters. For instance, the Jonnycakes ($4.95) are a popular breakfast item. The cornmeal used to make these “pancakes” is grown across the river

at the historic Davis Farm. The Crab Cakes ($10.95), chock full of Maine crabmeat, are popular at lunchtime. The Fish Tacos ($10.95) with local cod make a fine dinner, especially with the hand-cut French fries, made with Kennebeck potatoes also from Davis Farm. The freshly ground organic coffee blends are from New Harvest in Pawtucket. If you’d like something more than coffee or soda with your meal, feel free to bring your own bottle of wine or your favorite craft beer. This is a BYOB establishment. On our visit, we surveyed the room and found a wide variety of customers: young women in blue jeans, welldressed elderly couples, blue-collar workers – just about every slice of the pie we call America. Some folks sat alone at their tables, reading books while they dined. This is a neighborhood restaurant that makes everyone feel at home and comfortable. What do we recommend? By all means, try the Rhode Island Clam Chowder ($2.95 a cup, $5.95 a bowl). The consistency is on the thin side, but the chowder is brimming with ocean flavor. I was sorry I had ordered only a cup. The Clam Cakes ($3.95 for three) are enormous, the largest we’ve seen. They are a deep, golden brown with just the right amount of crunch in every bite. Inside, the clam cakes are pillowy soft and studded with chopped quahogs. These are great on their own, and even better dipped into the chowder or the house-made
Eggs Benedict
tartar sauce, made with sweet and dill pickles, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, dill and tarragon. Some customers are such fans of this tartar sauce they feel Carolyn should bottle it for retail sale. At lunch, the sandwiches ($5.95 to $15.95) are big and beautiful. The Mystic is not your mother’s tuna salad, but rather a zesty combination of tuna, diced onion, sun-dried tomatoes, capers, olives and extra virgin olive oil on whole wheat. The Linda is a creative chicken salad containing chopped walnuts, celery and dried cranberries with mayonnaise and impeccably fresh lettuce on a rich and tender brioche roll. The burgers ($6.95 to $8.95) cover the basics and then some, from a classic backyard burger to versions made with salmon, veggies or portobello mushrooms. The same menu is offered at lunch and dinner, with the addition of dinner specials such as steamed lobster, lobster pot pie, grilled beef tenderloin, herb-roasted chicken and baked stuffed flounder. At our dinner, I so appreciated the healthy presentation of the Catch of the Day ($15.95). That day it was local cod, a generous serving perfectly grilled with a touch of olive oil and lemon juice. Accompaniments were brown rice pilaf, pleasantly chewy with a nutty taste, and more ovenroasted vegetables than I could possibly eat. Across the table was a far-less healthy dinner, but it was deep-fried paradise. The Fish and Chips ($12.95) consisted
of a large, lightly battered piece of cod, fried until golden brown on the outside and pearly white inside, served with seasoned fries (the kind you just can’t stop eating) and the house-made cole slaw. Mermaid slaw is a crunchy combination of shredded green cabbage, turnips, carrots, radishes, red onion, herbs and spices held together lightly with just a touch of mayonnaise. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the Orange Cornmeal Cake ($5), a moist combination of local flavors sparked with the bright taste of juicy oranges. We also indulged in the oversized chocolate chip cookie ($2) on the dessert menu, fighting over it ever so nicely. The Mermaid Café offers dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. If you come in between 5 and 6pm, they will knock 20 percent off your bill. With reasonable prices to begin with, that’s almost too good to be true – sort of like those mythical mermaids of long ago. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

Meet Clark… part of The Seasons family.
W
ell. As you know, in May I was adopted from my loving foster family by The Seasons assisted living community in East Greenwich. Their beloved black lab Boomer had passed away at the end of 2010 leaving quite a void in the lives of the residents, staff and visitors. Well, I’m happy to say that I was immediately welcomed into a large and loving family that gives as much attention and love to me as I give to them. I couldn’t be happier or better cared for. When you were first introduced to me in the Spring, I was roaming around outdoors amongst the hydrangeas in the beautiful and fragrant outdoor courtyard. Now that the weather is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter and winter is approaching, I’ll be spending more of my time indoors. There are so many spacious common areas for me to explore, residents and staff to spend time with, and my favorite sofa for lounging. I’m told that soon the fireplaces will be lit. So no matter what the weather is doing outside, or how early it gets dark, it will be warm and bright here at The Seasons. So stop by to see us. We can have a cup of coffee or tea together.

In fact, since someone finally smartened up and built a multiplex in South County Commons, you’ve got no reason to venture north of the fire tower. Well, except that you keep getting wind of these renegade artists at someplace called AS220. Rumor has it that not only have they started buying up blocks of downtown Providence, but they’re behind the Occupy-something movement. Or maybe you’re confusing that with the fact that AS220 will be occupying the Hera Gallery with HYDRA, a group show featuring the works of Susan Clausen, Sheyla Rivera, Umberto Crenca and Neal T. (From left to right) Matthew Thompson, Terry Simpson, Elisabeth Thompson in the Contemporary Theater Company’s Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge
Some folks put you
in the holiday spirit. Others make you want to drink a holiday spirit or two. If the likes of George Bailey, the Grinch and any remotely red-nosed reindeer leave you in need of a stiff drink, we’ve got just the show for you. Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge is a twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Ebenezer Scrooge gets top billing in the traditional tale, but playwright Christopher Durang’s parody instead casts a spotlight on the long-suffering lady of the Cratchit household. With winter winds, money woes and a house full of kids bearing down on her, Mrs. Cratchit has a bone to pick with this holiday season. And it’s a hoot to watch her pick it. The Contemporary Theatre Company of South Kingstown (CTC) mounts the musical comedy this month. After several successful runs of The Gift of the Magi, artistic director Christopher Simpson began looking for a new December show. He was delighted to discover that Durang, the man behind absurdist satires like Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them, had crafted a holiday play. “It immediately has that contemporary charm and wit that he is known for,” says Simpson. And it looked like it would be a lot of fun to work on, a quality impor-
tant to Simpson in selecting shows. Durang’s humor tends towards the devilishly dark, but he employs a more PG-13, family-friendly tone in Mrs. Bob Cratchit. Commissioned by Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, this goodnatured send-up of Christmas classics premiered in 2002. The play begins in Dickensian time but moves through time and space, peopled by familiar characters from A Christmas Carol, It’s a Wonderful Life and more. In the CTC’s production, Amy Lee Connell stars as Mrs. Cratchit, with featured players including Kevin Killavey as her husband, Terry Simpson as Scrooge and Amelia Giles as the Ghost. It’s also the CTC’s first show with children in the ensemble – six young South Kingstown actors ranging in age from seven to twelve years old. Among them are Liam Donnelly as Tiny Tim and Elisabeth Thompson as Zuzu Bailey. “The kids bring a wonderful energy,” Simpson reports, adding that directing them is a novel task. “You can’t take anything for granted in terminology, any cultural references or past experiences. It makes you look at everything fresh.” The play will be performed at the Towers of Narragansett, where sweeping ocean views always lend an impressive backdrop. Simpson plans
to take advantage of the unique location with some new staging ideas. A small orchestra led by Stephen Grueb will provide lively musical accompaniment. And audiences can expect hot cocoa, cookies and caroling to put them in a festive mood. For an added bonus (of which Scrooge would ever approve), Thursdays offer pay-whatyou-can admission. “It’s a tremendously fun and funny show where you do leave with the Christmas sprit,” Simpson says. If it’s not enough to carry you through the season with a renewed sense of holly jolliness, you can always follow Mrs. Cratchit’s lead. Bottoms up!

December 1-4 Ah, who doesn’t occasionally long for a simpler era? But, before you go all time machine, it might be smart to consider the things that you’ll be obligated to take back with an earlier period. Like that whopping quarter-dollar for minimum wage that workers got back in the day. A more pocketbook friendly option may be just to boogie on down to the Wickford Village Festival of Lights. Quaint village with period architecture? Check. A town tree lighting on the village green? Check. Carolers in the park? Check. An ongoing live nativity scene? Check. Santa? You betcha – at breakfast, cruising the harbor on a boat and chilling during a hayride. A chance to holiday shop without going into any big box stores? Check. Really, what else could you possibly need? Weekend long. Check website for detailed event information, including admission costs. Historic Wickford Village. 1-877-2957200, wickfordvillage.org.

elementary school days when it was time for art class and you could not wait to see what project the teacher had in store? How about those snowflakes you were asked to make during the winter season that wondrously never came out the same? Who would have guessed the technique to make them is known as Scherenschnitte, the German art of paper cutting. Scherenschnitte artist and Rhode Island resident Ingrid Lavoie discovered the craft around the age of 16 when visiting Denmark with her mother. Intrigued, she wanted to try it herself, and thus began her artistic endeavors. Lavoie went on to receive her Bachelors in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design, dabbling in other media along the way. Yet, Lavoie became taken with this particular expression of art. She explains, “It’s kind of like opening a present when you first open it; it’s that thrill when you don’t know what it’s going to look like when you are cutting it until you open it up.” It is also quite simple and affordable to try at home. All you really need is a piece of paper, a pair of scissors (or an exacto knife, which is easier for cutting away smaller pieces) and a flat surface
on which to work. You fold the piece of paper in half and start cutting. The tricky part is thinking positively and negatively. For example, if you were creating a bird you’d want to think about what you are cutting away, such as the eye or mouth. Once you cut it, it’s gone and you’ll have to start over if you make a mistake or are unhappy with the final outcome. For reasons such as these, Lavoie likes to double up and use two pieces of paper at times, so that she will have more than one final copy – one she can keep and another she can sell. Depending on the size and details of the piece, Scherenschnitte can take from a half-hour to an hour on 4” by 6” pieces and up to a couple of days for 15” by 20”. Interested in a special piece that no one has? No need to be concerned – they are all originals. Lavoie will only produce and sell one of each. Her pieces range from $15 dollars to over $100 and she eagerly welcomes commissioned pieces as well. The location of Lavoie’s shows will greatly influence the type of pieces being displayed. “If I’m having one in Newport, I’ll do a lot of nautical paper cuttings,” she explains. “If I’m doing RISD alumni shows, I’ll do something
quirky, because they may be open to something not as traditional and I can be more experimental with my imagery.” Her work can be seen at many outdoor and indoor craft festivals or simply hanging in the windows of stores and homes throughout Rhode Island. Once you finish a piece, she notes, “You can hang them in windows, because they cast shadows; it is interesting to see how the light shines through them.” If you would like to have a go at Scherenschnitte yourself, you can find Lavoie teaching workshops at the Providence Handicraft Club (though you must be a member). You may also view her work at Studio Hop in Providence, which often carries works by numerous local artists. If you are an overachiever and are already doing some holiday shopping, save the date for Saturday, December 3, because Lavoie and other local artists will be participating in RISD’s Holiday Art Sale from 10am-5pm at the RI Convention Center. Who knows, maybe you’ll find that snowflake adornment you’ve been seeking. To contact Ingrid Lavoie, call 792-1062 or email marcinglav@cox.net, or visit, www.etsy.com/shop/Ingridlouise

Spicy and Sweet Nothing says the holidays like the taste of gingerbread. We sampled a variety of ginger-inflected treats from delicious local establishments to welcome the season.
Cap’n Jack’s This gingerbread cookie from Cap’n Jack’s was a crowd pleaser. The crunch of the crystallized sugar went exceptionally well with the soft and chewy interior. The ginger was not overbearing or understated, leaving you with the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. 706 Succotash Road, Wakefield, 789-4556, www. capnjacksrestaurant.com.
Grapes and Gourmet PattiCakes For a taste of the season, sink your teeth into this flavorful cupcake from PattiCakes. The cake contains apple filling and is topped with a thick, gingery frosting, garnished with a chocolate dipped dehydrated apple slice and a dash of crystallized ginger. 542 Kingstown Road, Wakefield, 789-CAKE, www.patticakesri.com.

This cookie from Grapes and Gourmet packs a punch. On first bite, the flavor seems mild but quickly comes forth to produce a savory, genuinely ginger aftertaste. It’s a great, softer alternative to a ginger snap. 9 Ferry Wharf, Jamestown, 4230070, www.grapesandgourmeet.com.
Felicia’s The quintessential holiday flavors are packed into this gingerbread muffin from Felicia’s. The powdered sugar topping dotted with white chocolate chips was a nice complement to the spicy ginger cake, perfect for a mug of hot tea. 5757 Post Road, East Greenwich, 886-4141, www.feliciascoffee.com.

“FOX HILL FARM”
AN HISTORIC 44 - ACRE WATERFRONT PROPERTY BEAVERTAIL, JAMESTOWN
Rich in natural beauty, with sweeping vistas of Dutch Harbor, the West Passage, open fields and scenic conservation areas, Fox Hill Farm is one of Jamestown’s most beloved treasures. Protected by 45 acres of beautiful Audubon marshland on its east and west boundaries, this extraordinary property is steeped in over 375 years of history and traces its roots to Benedict Arnold, the first governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Now, 44-acres of the original farm is for sale, with over 1,000 ft. of waterfront on Dutch Harbor, a private, sandy beach, an eighteenth-century farmhouse, an apple orchard, fields, farmlands, almost a mile of stone walls and a separate building lot. A conservation easement protects the farm and the historic landscape. The iconic 5,150 sq. ft., five -bedroom farmhouse has eight fireplaces and is a blend of 18th, 19th and 20th-century architectural elements. It includes a recently created two-story master suite that features wide plank floorboards, radiant heat, two fireplaces and exposed, original beams. The farmhouse also has a separate legal apartment, which would be a wonderful guest wing, au pair’s quarters or family room. $7,500,000 WWW.FOXHILLFARMJAMESTOWN.COM
