Main Street, East Greenwich
Known for: dining, shopping, historical charm, bustling Main Street Good for: couples, families, singles, boaters, sight-seers
East Greenwich is the northernmost town in what is generally considered South County; it is also probably the least “beachy” of South County’s waterfront communities. Its location on Greenwich Cove, however, makes it a popular place for boaters. The town is rich with history, boasting some particularly lovely examples of early New England architecture. It is the eighth oldest municipality in the state, acquired from the Pequot Indians in 1644 and incorporated by the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1677. Up until 1854, it was one of five state capitals. East Greenwich also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as a June 1775 resolution by the General Assembly, convening in the town courthouse (now Town Hall), passed a resolution creating the first formal, governmentally sanctioned navy in the western hemisphere. Several other towns claim to be the birthplace of the Navy, but East Greenwich’s claim is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.

Main Street, the town’s bustling thoroughfare, is the center of commercial and cultural activity in East Greenwich. It is packed with independently owned shops, restaurants, cafes and salons, maintaining small town charm while providing a lively and modern atmosphere for diners and entertainment seekers. Some of South County’s most sophisticated, urban-style dining is to be found here, a contrast to the more casual clam shacks and family seafood restaurants for which most of South County is known. There is also some nightlife, particularly down by the waterfront off Main Street; the bars generally close at 1am. Boaters will find ample boat parking and a public dock in Greenwich Cove. There is fishing, in addition to the many restaurants along the waterfront. Just across the cove there is easy access to Goddard State Memorial Park in neighboring Warwick, which features a beach, picnic sites and nine-hole golf course.
Frenchtown Park This 125-acre nature preserve, nestled behind the town’s Parks Department building, boasts scenic hiking trails that run along streams and ponds, as well as an old mill site. From Route 2 South turn right on Frenchtown Road, park is half-mile down on the right, behind Parks Department building. East Greenwich Farmer’s Market This outdoor market for fresh, local produce, seafood and meats also features prepared foods, coffee, fresh breads, and local products including soaps. It runs Mondays from 3-6pm, June 20-October 24. Academy Field at Church and Rector Streets. www.farmfresh.org

Wickford waterfront
Known for: historic charm, shopping, dining, art Good for: families, couples, kids, boaters, aesthetes
This quaint, historic village within North Kingstown is nestled on one of the best protected harbors on the entire East Coast. Established in 1663, Wickford still boasts one of the biggest and best collections of 18th century homes in the Northeast. Its picturesque charm and scenic harbor give it that classic small town feel, but the thriving arts community and eclectic shopping are anything but antique. It’s the perfect place to spend a day strolling the main thoroughfares, exploring the harbor, and wandering down old side streets. The town is steeped in history. Famous presidential portrait artist Gilbert Stuart, who is responsible for the image of George Washington that appears on the dollar bill, was born in a small snuff-mill on the outskirts of Wickford, just south in Saunderstown (also a part of North Kingstown). The village was also the inspiration for the fictional village of Eastwick in John Updike’s novel The Witches of Eastwick. The

Old Narragansett Church at 60 Church Lane is the oldest Episcopal church building in the Northeast. Smith’s Castle, a heavily fortified 1678 house, is said to be the first English home in the area, and one of the oldest in the state. In more modern developments, Wickford’s Main Street was named one of America’s ten best in the book Remembering Main Street: An American Album, an illustrated social history of Main Streets throughout America by author Pat Ross. There are over 50 owner-operated businesses in Wickford, and many of them can found right on Main Street. The town center is also alive with events all year round, including Daffodil Days in April, the Garden Tour in July, the Festival of Lights in December, and perhaps the best known, the Wickford Art Festival in July. Down by the harbor, the waterfront is dotted with great outdoor dining spots, and is known for being pet friendly.
Smith’s Castle This historic house has been a trading post and a plantation throughout its history, and is now a museum that hosts events like the annual Strawberry Festival, which falls this year on Saturday, June 18. 55 Richard Smith Drive. 401-294-3521, www. smithscastle.org Wickford Art Festival This nationallyrenowned annual celebration is going into its 49th consecutive year, drawing hundreds of artists, both from the local community and around the country. Theatre By the Sea
Known for: shopping, central location, historic charm, beaches, entertainment, arts and culture Good for: couples, families, beach-goers, fishermen, sports fans Though it’s rare that anyone will expressly tell you to go to South Kingstown, very often, someone will tell you to go to South Kingstown. This is because the municipality as a whole is not discussed nearly as often as the individual villages and hamlets it comprises. Wakefield, Peace Dale, Kingston and Matunuck – all of which fall within South Kingstown’s borders – are far more common reference points. Wakefield is the town’s commercial center, home to basic amenities like supermarkets, shopping centers and banks. However, its vibrant thoroughfares are also dotted by mom-and-pop stores, family restaurants and sports bars. It has a historic district in the town center, which built up around the mills on the Saugatucket River. Like much of Rhode Island, Wakefield was once home to a booming textile industry. Peace Dale is South Kingstown’s more quaint side. Its historic district, the village’s core, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are charming little
shops and boutiques, and plenty of beautiful historic architecture, including the Hazard Memorial Peace Dale Public Library, built in 1890. Matunuck is a classic New England beach town, home to several beaches, as well as the acclaimed Theatre By the Sea and two of Rhode Island’s favorite beach bars, Tara’s Joyce Family Pub and the Ocean Mist. Its main drag, Matunuck Beach Road, faces the Block Island Sound, reflecting the village’s name, a Native American word for “lookout.” Kingston and West Kingston are best known for being the home of the University of Rhode Island, which features Division I NCAA athletics (the URI Rams men’s basketball team being the bestknown), performing arts and the URI Master Gardeners. Snug Harbor is an appropriately named fishing hamlet. Sport fishermen are likely to find all they need here, from supplies to charters to tournaments.

Scarborough State Beach
Known for: beaches, seafood, clam shacks and nightlife Good for: families, beach-goers, surfers, young singles, foodies
This is the quintessential New England beach town, with some of the state’s most popular beaches, plenty of beach houses for rent, and a population that swells in the summer. Located on a narrow strip of land carved out of South Kingstown, Narragansett was incorporated in 1901 and has since become one of Rhode Island’s premier resort towns. The town is almost all coastline, which makes for great beachgoing and scenic drives along the water. There is plenty of lodging and plenty more to do and see. Point Judith is a small cape in Narragansett, and the primary launching point for voyagers to Block Island. The Block Island Ferry runs year-round here, and fast ferry service is offered. Within Point Judith is the tiny fishing hamlet known as Galilee. The village is home to two state beaches – Roger Wheeler and Salty Brine (which, believe it or not, is named after a person), both of which are shielded by

the breakwater that protects Galilee’s harbor – as well as two of the most enduring Rhode Island seafood restaurants: George’s of Galilee and Champlin’s. Ocean Road, as the name would imply, makes for a great coastline drive through the town, passing Narragansett Town Beach (one of its most popular, especially among the younger set and surfers), underneath the town’s iconic Towers, and running along the shore past Scarborough State Beach, and leading eventually to two legendary clam shacks: Aunt Carrie’s and Iggy’s Doughboys (the latter of which is actually on Point Judith Road). The area around Town Beach and the Towers is typically a summer hotspot. In addition to Pier Marketplace, a thriving shopping center, there is a small cluster of restaurants, including the classic French Basil’s, the hip Trio and Crazy Burger, which has been featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
Black Point This coastal lookout just off Ocean Road is a prime spot for picnickers and fishermen alike. A short path through the woods leads down to amazing views of Jamestown’s Beavertail, Newport’s Brenton Point and the Newport Bridge. Point Judith Lighthouse In a state full of historic lighthouses this is one of the most well-known. The original wooden lighthouse was destroyed in a fire, but the current one, erected in 1857, remains active and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the end of Ocean Drive.

Known for: rural charm, history, open spaces, water views Good for: families, nature-lovers, biking, fishing Jamestown occupies Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay after Aquidneck Island, which is occupied by Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth. Of course, this is Rhode Island, so don’t let the term “second biggest” mislead you: Conanicut Island is nine miles long by one mile wide. The island is connected to the mainland at Saunderstown by the Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge, named for the Italian explorer who visited Narragansett Bay in 1524, and to Aquidneck Island by the iconic Newport Bridge, which is depicted on the Rhode Island commemorative quarter. Route 138 runs across both bridges, easily connecting South County with Jamestown, Newport and on to the east side of Narragansett Bay. It makes for both a quick jaunt and a scenic drive. Jamestown retains much of its rural character and quiet charm. There is lots of open space, very little in the way of suburban development, a town center that is more traditional village than commercial
sprawl, and plenty of historic sites that dot the island. Several of these sites reflect its history as a military outpost during the Revolutionary War, the Spanish-American War, and both World Wars. Fort Dumpling, Fort Wetherill and Conanicut Battery are all examples of this. Those who like to explore on foot or by bicycle will find Jamestown a perfect place to spend a quiet day outdoors. Car traffic on the island is light. There are great parks, plenty of unspoiled beauty, lots of historic sights to see, and lovely water views just about everywhere. Much like neighboring Newport, Jamestown was a booming resort town in the Gilded Age, but like many of that era’s vacation playgrounds, the boom was short-lived. Most of the island’s grand old hotels are long since gone, but there are still a handful of hotels and bed and breakfasts that can provide a quiet retreat from the crowds in more popular tourist scenes like Narragansett and Newport.
Fort Wetherill State Park A former military installation, Fort Wetherill rests on 100-foot high cliffs, providing a prime vantage point for boat races and events in Narragansett Bay’s East Passage. It is also a popular jumping off point for scuba divers. Known for: festivals, forests, beaches, small town charm Good for: nature-lovers, families, kids, seafood lovers
Colloquially known as Chariho, these three, thinly populated towns encompass several villages that are themselves common reference points for locals, including Hope Valley, Carolina, Wyoming and Ashaway. Together they offer a taste of both South County’s lively tourism industry of today and its rural past. Charlestown is the only one of the three on the water, and thus home to Chariho’s only beaches, with both a town and a state beach occupying the narrow strip of land that encircles the coastal lagoon Ninigret Pond. Ninigret Park is a 227-acre park that is sprawling in both its size and the range of activities offered, offering a playground, ball fields, bicycle path, tennis and basketball courts, freshwater pond with beach, and picnic areas. It also hosts two of the signature events of the summer: the Charlestown Seafood Festival, August 5-7, and Labor Day weekend’s Rhythm and Roots Festival, a three-day celebration of blues, bluegrass, zydeco and the like.

Hopkinton and neighboring Richmond share the historic village of Hope Valley, the center of which is featured on the National Register of Historic Places. Richmond, however, is perhaps best known as the home of the Washington County Fair. This fiveday festival celebrates its 45th year on the Washington County Pomona Grange Recreational Area on Route 112. It is the state’s biggest agricultural event and draws visitors from far and wide for country music concerts, a huge midway, rides for the kids, horse and tractor pulls, and much more. This year’s fair runs August 17-21. The tiny hamlet of Usquepaug, also in Richmond, is home to the oldest continuously operating manufacturing business in the state, Kenyon’s Grist Mill, which is open to visitors. Currently housed in a building that dates to 1886, it has been grinding corn meals and flours since 1696. Its products are key ingredients in johnnycakes, a cornmeal pancake that is one of the state’s signature foods.

Known for: beaches, music, restaurants and bars, historic downtown, Italian food, beach houses Good for: families, singles, foodies, surfers and other water sports enthusiasts, fishermen Running along the southwestern shoreline of Rhode Island up to neighboring Connecticut, Westerly is one of the state’s true summer boomtowns, with a population that increases dramatically in the hotter months. Like many Southern Rhode Island towns, it incorporates several smaller villages, including Watch Hill (see page 49), Dunn’s Corners, Bradford, Misquamicut and Weekapaug. Though it’s known primarily as a beach town, Westerly’s formerly industrial town center is undergoing revitalization, making it an increasingly popular home for the arts. The Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, a 50-member, artist owned and operated organization, the famous Chorus of Westerly, the Granite Theater and the Colonial Theater (which presents Shakespeare in the Park during the summer) are all in the vicinity. Westerly is home to a large Italian-American community, and as such, the town is known for its Italian food. It is even home to its own unique type of Italian sausage, known as “soupy,” a dry-cured pork sausage that can be traced back to many residents’ Calabrian ancestry. Italian restaurants such as Vetrano’s, Fra’s Italian Gourmet, Ristorante Serapo and Venice are popular dining destinations. The live music scene in Westerly is probably the best in the area. Perennially touring, multiple Grammy-nominated band Roomful of Blues was founded here in the 1960s, and continues to be a popular live act, both locally and around the country. The Knickerbocker Cafe, a venue that was often synonymous with Roomful, remains the epicenter of the town’s music scene, hosting regional and national touring acts. Paddy’s, a Misquamicut beach bar, is another hot spot for music fans throughout the summer.

Watch Hill
ATTRACTIONs Ocean House The last of the grand Victorian hotels, Ocean House underwent a meticulous reconstruction and reopened to acclaim in 2010. Its restaurant, The Seasons, earned an honorable mention on Esquire magazine’s Best New Restaurants of 2010. 1 Bluff Avenue. 401-5857000, www.oceanhouseri.com Napatree Point This half-mile long public beach separates Little Narragansett Bay from the Block Island Sound. In addition to beach-goers, it’s also a popular spot for hikers and bird-watchers.
East Beach, Watch Hill
Known for: historic charm, quiet atmosphere, shopping, great views Good for: families, couples, nature-lovers, bird watchers This historic village is actually a part of the town of Westerly, but it enjoys a reputation as a resort town unto itself. It is the southernmost town on mainland Rhode Island, and contains the westernmost point in the state, Napatree Point. Both secluded and affluent, Watch Hill is considered a quieter and more familyfriendly resort town than better known and more crowded destinations like Narragansett and Newport. The 629-acre historic district at the center of town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More humorously, Lisa Birnbach, author of 1980’s The Official Preppy Handbook, cited Watch Hill as an acceptable summer destination for preppies in her 2010 follow-up True Prep. Watch Hill sits on a small peninsula in the Block Island Sound; Napatree Point is a narrow spit of land that juts out from its western side, forming Little Narragansett
Bay. Watch Hill’s geography made it a key lookout point (hence its name) guarding the Long Island Sound during the Revolutionary war and French-Indian Wars, and it was home to a short-lived military installation in the early 1900s, Fort Mansfield. Today, the village is known for its grand mansions overlooking the ocean and its quaint feel. The town center is a seasonal boomtown, with many local institutions like the Ocean House resort, the Olympia Tea Room, and the famed ice cream shop St. Clair Annex hosting flocks of visitors throughout the summer. Though its secluded location provides a welcome respite from noisier tourist destinations, it is also an easy jumping off point for exploring Westerly’s Misquamicut Beach area, neighboring Charlestown, and nearby Connecticut attractions like the casinos and historic Mystic Seaport.
Sandy Point This 35-acre island was once attached to Napatree Point, but was separated from the mainland by the Hurricane of 1938. It exists today mostly as a nature preserve with public access and a beach. Flying Horse Carousel This is the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country, built in 1876. It is also the only remaining one of its kind, with the horses suspended from a center frame instead of attached to a floor. At the end of Bay Street.

Waterfront Dining Waterfront dining: it’s pretty much a no-brainer. You wouldn’t make a trip to some of the loveliest beachfront communities in New England just to go sit and eat in a mall food court or tchotchke-laden chain restaurant, would you? Of course not. The perfect way to cap off a day at the beach or exploring the sights is to enjoy a leisurely meal on a seaside deck, enjoying the kind of food that made the Ocean State famous. George’s of Galilee is one of the classic family seafood restaurants in Rhode Island, serving legions of summer diners since 1948. Located right on the water in Galilee, the tiny fishing hamlet on Narragansett’s Point Judith, George’s deck overlooks a busy fishing harbor – meaning it’s mere steps from the freshest seafood available. All the Little Rhody classics – fish and chips, fried clams, littlenecks, baked stuffed lobster, etc. – are here, along with some more modern touches, like sushi, as well as steaks, pastas, and a famous prime rib. 250 Sand Hill Cove Road, Narragansett. 401-783-2306, www.georgesofgalilee.com On the northern tip of Southern Rhode Island, you’ll find Chelo’s On The Waterfront, part of a family-owned chain of restaurants around the state that has been a staple of casual dining since 1955. Their waterfront location boasts a great view of Greenwich Cove from its two floors of dining, including deck and lawn seating, fire pits, four bars and live entertainment. The food is pure, family-style comfort at a great value. 1 Masthead Drive, Warwick. 401-884-3000, www.chelos.com Heading the opposite direction to the southernmost town on the Rhode Island mainland, Westerly’s Andrea Hotel at sprawling Misquamicut Beach offers food, drinks and a sweeping view of the Atlantic. Its great bar area offers cocktails and music, while the patio is a great place to enjoy classic seafood, sandwiches and pastas. 89 Atlantic Avenue, Westerly. 401-348-8788, www. andreahotel.com

for the
Wine Lover For a small state, Rhode Island is home to a surprisingly large number of vineyards, all of which belong to the Coastal Wine Trail (www.coastalwinetrail.com). This tour of Southern New England vineyards stretches from the tip of Cape Cod to down to Connecticut. South County’s only vineyard is Langworthy Farm, a bucolic bed and breakfast that produces small batch, locally-themed wines. Stop by for a tour and tasting of bottles like Shelter Harbor Chardonnay and Watch Hill Merlot. 308 Shore Road, Westerly. 401-322-7791, www.langworthyfarm.com Nearby, Newport Vineyards produces a huge variety of bottles like the popular Great White, In the Buff Chardonnay and Newport Merlot. They also offer daily tastings and tours, and a shuttle from downtown Newport to the vineyard. 909 East Main Road, Middletown. 401-848-5161, www.newportvineyards.com

Just across the Connecticut border, Stonington offers a lot for the aspiring oenophile. Stonington Vineyards offers vineyard tours and tastings at its expansive estate. Be sure to try the best-known Seaport White blend, or the vineyard’s well-respected Chardonnays. 523 Taugwonk Road, Stonington, CT. 860-535-1222, www.stoningtonvineyards.com Surrounded by the waters of Wequetequock Cove, Saltwater Farm Vineyard is a relatively new winery with quite a lot of history. Use of the property dates back to the 17th century – and it was used as an airport during World War II – but the winery is just celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. The tasting room, which offers live music on the weekends, is housed in a revitalized WWII airport hangar. Enjoy their estate grown wines like the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc or 2008 Merlot. 349 Elm Street, Stonington, CT. 860415-9072, www.saltwaterfarmvineyard.com If you’d rather leave it to the experts, visit a wine boutique instead. No matter where you’re heading in the state, make sure to stop at The Savory Grape in East Greenwich. Kid-friendly Dining In Narragansett, enjoy hearty pub fare at Charlie O’s Tavern (2 Sand Hill Cove Road, Narragansett. 401-782-2002, www.charlieosri.net), where the burgers are delicious and the desserts are freshly made in house. Or, walk off the beach and up to the window at Iggy’s (1157 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. 401783-5608, www.iggysdoughboys.com), where the fried clams are second to none. Don’t miss the doughboys, either. While the Olde Lighthouse Diner’s (120 Knowles Way, Narragansett. 401284-3883) menu includes diner staples for breakfast, lunch and dinner, don’t sleep on their more ambitious, creative fare, either. For dinner, get a taste of Italy at Catarina’s Italian Village (945 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. 401-789-1725, www.italianvillage-ri.net), where you can sample everything from pizzas to the only-in-Rhode Island snail salad. In Wakefield, Catarina’s sister restaurant is the original Italian Village (195 Main Street. 401-783-3777, www.italianvillage-ri. com), which serves similarly authentic Italian fare. Phil’s Grille (323 Main Street, Wakefield. 401-783-4073, www.philsmainstreetgrille.com) is a popular breakfast spot that’s also open for lunch and dinner, with an emphasis on New England comfort food. The Bluebird Café (554 Kingstown Road, Wakefield. 401792-8940, www.bluebirdcaferi.com) is also open from breakfast to dinner, but has a Cajun influence to its menu. Casey’s Grill and Bar (191 Old Tower Hill Road, Wakefield. 401-789-9714, www.caseysgrill.com) is a casual pub serving American favorites mixed with Mexican flair. Cap’n Jack’s (706 Succotash Road, Wakefield. 401-789-4556, www.capnjacksrestaurant.com) specializes in fried seafood but also offers plenty of kid-friendly options. For a genuine New England seafood experience, Chopmist Charlie’s (40 Narragansett Avenue. 401-423-1020, www.chopmistcharlies.com) on Jamestown’s Conanicut Island is a great choice. Mohegan Sun Casino is an adventure unto itself. If you make the drive to Uncasville, Connecticut, stop at the casino’s Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, where kids are welcome (just not Friday and Saturday after 10pm) and will relish the opportunity to eat on board a boat. 1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard, Uncasville, CT. www. margaritavillemohegansun.com

Known for: beaches, nature, resort town atmosphere, nightlife Good for: Families, couples, young singles, beach-goers, bicyclists, nature lovers Located about 13 miles (or approximately a half-hour ferry ride) from Point Judith in Narragansett, Block Island is the state’s island getaway. This secluded island spends most of the year as a sleepy rural hideaway with a year-round population of just over 1000, but in the summer it morphs into a booming New England resort town. Home to the town of New Shoreham, the state’s smallest, Block Island’s bustling tourism industry is but one face of an island that also boasts some of the most unspoiled landscapes found anywhere in the country. Approximately 20 percent of the island is set aside for conservation, but much more of it remains undeveloped. The Nature Convservancy, a national nonprofit environmental organization, has declared the island one of its “Last Great Places,” a list of only 12 nature sites in the entire western hemisphere.

Nature buffs will find miles of unspoiled coastline along with a National Wildlife Refuge on the northern tip of the island. Mohegan Bluffs are 200-foot clay cliffs that provide an awe-inspiring view of the Atlantic. On a clear day, visitors may be able to see Montauk, New York off in the distance. Bike and moped rentals, a popular mode of transportation on the island, make for easy and scenic travel around its many sights. Those who prefer a livelier atmosphere will find the town center vibrant and alive with activity. This densely clustered area is home to most of New Shoreham’s restaurants, shops, entertainment, nightlife and amenities. It’s a short walk from the ferry to just about anything the town has to offer, and visitors will find it easy (and enjoyable) to get around without a car. It’s the jumping off point for anything from nature explorations to great food to live music.
