ocated about 13 miles (or approximately a half-hour ferry ride) from Point Judith in Narragansett, Block Island is the state’s island getaway. This secluded island spends most months as a sleepy rural hideaway with a yearround population of just over 1,000, but in the summer it morphs into a booming New England resort town. Home to the town of New Shoreham, Block Island’s bustling tourism industry is but one facet of an island that also boasts some of the most unspoiled land-

scapes found anywhere in the country. Approximately 43 percent of the island is set aside for conservation, but much more of it remains undeveloped. The Nature Conservancy, a national nonprofit environmental organization, has declared the island one of its “Last Great Places,” a list of only 12 nature sites in the entire western hemisphere. Nature buffs will find miles of unspoiled coastline, along with a National Wildlife Refuge on the northern tip of the island. Mohegan Bluffs are 200-foot

olloquially known as Chariho, these three, thinly populated towns encompass several villages that are themselves common reference points for locals, including Hope Valley, Carolina, Wyoming and Ashaway. Together they offer a taste of both South County’s lively tourism industry of today and its rural past. Charlestown is the only one of the three on the water, and thus home to Chariho’s only beaches, with both a town and a state beach occupying the narrow

strip of land that encircles the coastal lagoon Ninigret Pond. Ninigret Park is a 227-acre park that is sprawling in both its size and the range of activities offered, with a playground, ball fields, bicycle path, tennis and basketball courts, freshwater pond with beach, and picnic areas. It also hosts two of the signature events of the summer: the Charlestown Seafood Festival, August 3-5, and Labor Day weekend’s Rhythm and Roots Festival, a three-day celebration of blues, bluegrass, zydeco and the like.

ast Greenwich is the northernmost town in what is generally considered South County; it is also probably the least “beachy” of South County’s waterfront communities. Its location on Greenwich Cove, however, makes it a popular place for boaters. The town is rich with history, boasting some particularly lovely examples of early New England architecture. It is the eighth oldest municipality in the state, acquired from the Pequot Indians in 1644 and incorporated by the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1677. Up un-

til 1854, it was one of five state capitals. East Greenwich also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as a June 1775 resolution by the General Assembly, convening in the town courthouse (now Town Hall), passed a resolution creating the first formal, governmentally sanctioned navy in the western hemisphere. Several other towns claim to be the birthplace of the Navy, but East Greenwich’s claim is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization. amestown occupies Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay after Aquidneck Island, which is occupied by Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth. Of course, this is Rhode Island, so don’t let the term “second biggest” mislead you: Conanicut Island is nine miles long by one mile wide. The island is connected to the mainland at Saunderstown by the Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge (named for the

Italian explorer who visited Narragansett Bay in 1524), and to Aquidneck Island by the iconic Newport Bridge (officially the Claiborne Pell Bridge), which is depicted on the Rhode Island commemorative quarter. traffic on the island is light. There are great parks, plenty of unspoiled beauty, lots of historic sights to see, and lovely water views just about everywhere. Much like neighboring Newport, Jamestown was a booming resort town in the Gilded Age, but like many of that era’s vacation playgrounds, the boom was short-lived. Most of the island’s grand old hotels are long since gone, but there are still a handful of hotels and bed and breakfasts that can provide a quiet retreat from the crowds in more popular tourist scenes like Narragansett and Newport.

his is the quintessential New England beach town, with some of the state’s most popular beaches, plenty of beach houses for rent, and a population that swells in the summer. Located on a narrow strip of land carved out of South Kingstown, Narragansett was incorporated in 1901 and has since become one of Rhode Island’s premier resort towns. The town is almost all coastline, which makes for great beach-going and scenic drives along the

water. There is plenty of lodging and plenty more to do and see. Point Judith is a small cape in Narragansett, and the primary launching point for voyagers to Block Island. The Block Island Ferry runs year-round here, and fast ferry service is offered seasonally. Within Point Judith is the tiny fishing hamlet known as Galilee. The village is home to two state beaches – Roger Wheeler and Salty Brine (which, believe it or not, is named after a person), both

hough it’s rare that anyone will expressly tell you to go to South Kingstown, very often, someone will tell you to go to South Kingstown. This is because the municipality as a whole is not discussed nearly as often as the individual villages and hamlets it comprises are. Wakefield, Peace Dale, Kingston and Matunuck – all of which fall within South Kingstown’s borders – are far more common reference points. Wakefield is the town’s commercial center, home to basic amenities like

supermarkets, shopping centers and banks. However, its vibrant thoroughfares are also dotted by mom-and-pop stores, family restaurants and sports bars. Wakefield offers much by the way of arts, including galleries, handmade jewelry crafters and a new theatre. It has a historic district in the town center, which built up around the mills on the Saugatucket River. Like much of Rhode Island, Wakefield was once home to a booming textile industry.

his historic village is actually a part of the town of Westerly, but it enjoys a reputation as a resort town unto itself. The 629-acre historic district at the center of town is list-

More humorously, Lisa Birnbach, author of 1980’s The Official Preppy Handbook, cited Watch Hill as an acceptable summer destination for preppies in her 2010 follow-up True Prep. his quaint, historic village within North Kingstown is nestled on one of the best protected harbors on the entire East Coast. Wickford boasts one of the biggest and best collections of 18th century homes in the Northeast. Famous presidential portrait artist Gilbert Stuart, who is responsible for the image of George Washington that appears on the dollar bill, was born in a small snuffmill on the outskirts of Wickford, just south in Saunderstown (also a part of North Kingstown). Summer Foods Checklist Eat your way through these quintessentially Rhody treats The Ocean State is justifiably known for its food – particularly its seafood. Though we share many of the staples of New England cuisine – clam chowder, lobster with drawn butter, fish and chips – we also have some unique offerings or peculiar twists on the classics. This handy primer will help you eat your way through the Ocean State. Quahogs These larger, hard-shell clams are about as close to an official state food as Rhode Island has. Depending on who’s doing the talking, you may hear it pronounced quaw-hog or koe-hog, but everyone can agree that they’re delicious and versatile, popping up in a number of staple Rhode Island dishes. And despite what Family Guy would have you believe, there is no town in this state named after them. Clam Cakes Folks expecting a clam version of something similar to a Maryland style crab cake may be surprised when they order a half-dozen clam cakes and get a paper bag filled with something more akin to a fritter. These little balls of fried dough are studded with bits of clam, and tearing into a piping hot batch of them on the way home from the beach is a true summer tradition around here. Chowder Clam cakes without chowder would be like a grilled cheese without tomato soup. Typical New England (white) chowder is generally the standard around here. The one to really look out for, however, is the uniquely Rhode Island clear chowder, which allows the clam to be the star of the dish, with the broth, potatoes and maybe some bacon playing supporting roles. Pizza Strips Nothing says packing a cooler for the beach quite like bakery pizza strips – at least not in Rhode Island. They’re cheap, easily portable and stay delicious in adverse conditions. (They hold up far better in prolonged sun exposure than, say, chicken salad.) The formula is simple: good, thick, doughy crust topped with a heavy, richly spiced tomato sauce. Some versions sprinkle on a bit of grated parmesan. Every bakery’s is a little different, but no occasion for outdoor summer eating is complete without a box of them. Hot Wieners Also known as belly busters or gaggers (gaggahs, if you’re pronouncing it like a true Rhode Islander), these are truly the guiltiest pleasure on the list.
