There are some who may find this year’s cover, by artist Tony Vevers, dark in tone, both literally and figuratively. I find it sadly exquisite, not only for the spare and elegant shapes within its overall pleasing composition but for the cautionary tale it tells of our tenuous connection with our planet. It is a poignant reminder to pay attention to our world, our actions and our impact upon our highly sensitive environment. In this year’s Art Guide, three artists, Myrna Harrison, Constance Black and Bill Evaul, each reminisce about a decade they lived through in Provincetown. All three decades, the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, share one thing in common—a sense that Provincetown was a place where artists could live and work and enjoy one another’s company without censure or great expense. There was an open art spirit and a vitality that Bill Evaul hits upon articulately with his great description of the commingling of separate layers of Provincetown society in the 1970s to create an intriguing whole. And so this year’s cover painting serves, for me personally, as a metaphor for Provincetown. The adults, for the most part, appear dark and somewhat disinterested silhouettes looking and moving toward something next. The children, however, in their brightly colored garb and focused vigilance, represent hope and wonder of the present. We are still the oldest arts community in the United States. Each year new galleries with new visions open their doors. And old galleries hold forth showcasing prominent artists who have passed through Provincetown over many decades. Annually, the Fine Arts Work Center draws bright young artists and writers to our edge of the world. The natural environment, with great special thanks to President John F. Kennedy, inspires new generations of artists. And the light. We will always have our light—the same light that inspired Charles Hawthorne to open the first art school here in 1899. But the tale of our cover painting is still cautionary. All is tenuous and it is up to us to pay attention with the same wonder and vigilance of those children on the beach, to support one another and to work together to insure that Provincetown continues to survive as a vital arts community.

PROVINCETOWN IN THE
28 | provincetownartguide.com
50s
My first trip to Provincetown was in 1951. Provincetown was magnificent: blue sky, blue-green sea, shimmering tidal pools and young, scruffy looking artists everywhere. The Hofmann School was the major show in town on Friday afternoons, when students—many of them veterans of WWII—brought their paintings into the school for Hofmann to critique. It was the best attended show in the town. My memory and photos of the time show standing-room only audiences. Monitors placed three paintings at a time at the front of the studio for Hofmann to comment on. He commented on every painting, always starting with the good points first and never mean or degrading to the painter. I was challenged and mesmerized and knew I would be back. The following summer I returned to Provincetown to study with Morris Davidson. He had been recommended by one of my former art teachers at Music and Art High School in NYC who said that if I was not seriously committed to being an artist that it would be best to study with someone other than Hans Hofmann—not bad advice.

The Davidson School was held in the Miller Hill Barn, which had a distinguished pedigree. It had housed the Hawthorne School in the twenties and the Hofmann School in the thirties and forties. The barn sat on the crest of Miller Hill with a view out to the bay. I worked at Seaman’s Gift Shop on Commercial Street opposite town hall and shared a room facing the bay, on the third floor of a walk-up. In Davidson’s class I painted still-lifes in oil. In my water-front room, I sat at a small round table facing the bay, and painted watercolors of the bay, its sailboats and the gray clouds of rainy days over the peaked roofs and steeples of the town. I think we may have paid as much as $50.00 a month for our bay-front room. Like most of the students and artists in Provincetown in the summer, I returned to New York City in the fall. The artists worked, studied, and showed in Provincetown in the summer and worked, studied and 2014 Provincetown Art Guide | 29
for custom made sandals. Duncan also made 2 inch wide belts out of heavy leather that wound through a leather loop to close—no stitching, no metal, all one piece. I still have mine.

showed in New York City the rest of the year. To be an artist in Provincetown in the summer was almost synonymous with being an artist in New York City the rest of the year. I began studying with Hofmann in Provincetown in the summer of 1953. In class Hofmann was voluble in a heavy German accent, ending almost every comment with what we students heard as “Nikka?” But was really the German, “Nicht Wahr” meaning “Isn’t that so?” His English may have been heavily accented, but his understanding of what students needed was just fine. That summer I lived in a tiny, one room shack behind a house on Commercial Street. The shack had a toilet, a shower, a hot-plate and an ice-box that a delivery man filled with a large chunk of ice once a week. I worked at Duncan’s Sandal Shop, drawing outlines of buyer’s feet on cardboard, carefully marking the separation between the big toe and the second toe 30 | provincetownartguide.com
The town was sharply divided between traditional artists who traced their lineage to impressionism and abstract artists who traced their lineage to expressionism and cubism—many of the latter were studying or had studied with Hans Hofmann. And the galleries were as sharply divided in the work they showed as the artists were in the work they produced. I remember two galleries from the early to mid-fifties that carried modern work: the Sun Gallery and the HCE Gallery. The Sun Gallery, owned by Yvonne Anderson, carried the younger, more adventurous of the artists, including Red Grooms, Lester Johnson, Robert and Mary Frank, Alex Katz and Alan Kaprow. Many were former Hofmann students. And for some young artists being adventurous meant returning to more figurative work, which sometimes put them at odds with the older abstract painters.
The HCE Gallery, owned by Nat Halpern, also showed abstract work. Hans Hofmann and other of the older, better known abstract artists showed there. The gallery had been started by Sam Kootz as an outpost of his 57th Street gallery in NYC. Nat Halpern, a writer and James Joyce scholar, took over the gallery in 1955 and renamed it the HCE Gallery. I have been told that Nat chose the name HCE from Joyce’s Ulysses and that it meant “Here Comes Everybody.” And everybody certainly did. For several summers in the mid-fifties, my husband Earl Pierce, a painter I met at Hofmann’s school, and I lived at the Days Lumber Yard Studios. The studios had great light, a sink and a hot-plate but neither a toilet nor a shower. The toilet was down the elevated walk-way, several studios away. There was no shower. These studios, updated with toilets and showers, are now part of the Fine Arts Work Center. In the fifties, most of the younger artists lived poor in shacks that had a toilet, a shower, probably a hot plate, but little else except a bed. They worked hard on painting during the day, worked hard to earn money at restaurants, sandal shops, gift stores during the evenings and weekends, and worked hard at enjoying the bay and ocean at parties where they drank much, smoked much and argued much over art and its meaning. It was a wonderful, exhilarating time. I have returned to Provincetown for part or all of most summers since the fifties. I continue to paint watercolors—now often combined with sumi ink— of the bay, its sail boats and the gray clouds of rainy

days. To this subject matter, I have added many drawings and paintings of the breakwater at the far end of town, Herring Cove Beach, the view from the pier looking back at a town that is characterized still by peaked roofs and steeples. The teachings of Davidson and Hofmann, both heavily influenced by cubism, remain with me. And I have continued to draw and paint the nude—an experience that was primary in Hofmann’s classes—now often of the nude model provided by PAAM. For me, Provincetown remains a challenging, mesmerizing, exhilarating place to be and work. MYRNA HARRISON has been active in the art scene of Provincetown for more than 60 years, showing first at the Provincetown Art Association in 1952, at the Sun and HCE Galleries in the mid-fifties, at Cortland Jessup Gallery in the nineties, and for the last several years at Gallery Ehva. Off the Cape, she shows at Beauregard Fine Art (Rumson,NJ) and ACME Fine Art (Boston). When not in Provincetown, she lives in Wickenburg, AZ. 2014 Provincetown Art Guide | 31

PROVINCETOWN IN THE

60s
I had come to Provincetown in the summer of 1950 to study with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art. I married my husband Carl in September after a summer-long romance. At this same time several artists also began to settle here like Salvatore Del Deo, Ciro Cozzi, Romanos Rizk and some like Varujan Boghosian who continue until now to return to Provincetown every summer. Those were quieter days in the fifties when an artist could afford to settle here, prices were cheap and it was easy to make a living doing carpentry or starting a restaurant like Ciro and Sal’s. By the sixties the town was humming with art schools and new galleries, influenced by the Hans Hoffman school, drawing bigtime artists like Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell. Nat Halper had also started the HCE Gallery which remained a premier art venue until 1967 and attracted many front line artists. One of his favorites was Milton Avery. Another gallery showing mainly New Yorkbased artists was the Tirca Karlis Gallery who showed artists like Benny Andrews, an African American painter born in the segregated South and a civil rights activist who was known for his expressionistic yet spare figural paintings. Besides the Cape School of Art under the direction of Henry Hensche, there were several flourishing schools at this time like The Morris Davidson School of Modern Painting and Leo Manso and Victor Candell’s Provincetown Workshop, modeled after the scholarship-based Cooper Union in New York City. There was also a school run by my neighbor Seong Moy, a Chinese born American painter and printmaker who taught at numerous colleges and universities.
The sixties was an exciting time for art. With the arrival of abstract expressionism, the town was full of artists and galleries and artists who ran art schools in the summer. ABOVE: The Provincetown Workshop, a small art school started by Modernist painters Victor Candell and Leo Manso in 1958, remained in operation for more than twenty years. windows. This was apt to happen at that time, large impromptu parties made up mostly of uninvited guests. Soon our unwanted guests were complaining about the lack of glasses and Carl was getting more angry by the minute. Finally he asked all the uninvited guests to leave. One objected and Carl made a swing at him with me clinging to him in my angel’s costume.
Although I had studied at the Cape School of Art and had a very academic background, I began to be influenced by the new ideas having an impact on the art world. I plunged into abstraction being mentored primarily by Jim Forsberg who had moved to town with his wife Joan. It became a time of parties and dancing. There were still costume balls every summer, especially carried on by the Beachcombers Club. Joan and I put together a parade float one year wearing large papier mâché masks, and Jerry Snyder created a beautiful replica of the Mayflower. This was because a copy of the Mayflower had sailed from England that summer and had stopped in Provincetown Harbor on its way to Plymouth where it resides to this day. The ball was held that year at the Provincetown Inn. Carl went decked out in a Superman costume and I went as a two-faced figure—angel on one side and a devil on the other. Unfortunately the word got out that we were having a follow up party at our house and soon people were practically coming in through the 54 | provincetownartguide.com
Myron Stout commented later that we had thrown out all the most important people in Provincetown including not allowing Franz Kline to enter. One winter we formed a theater group, the Provincetown Theater Workshop, under the direction of Ray Martin Wells and Jim Forsberg. It had started when a group got together to put on “Twelve Angry Men” and couldn’t find enough men for a full cast. We became involved, especially Carl. The first production was a play of mine called “Circles In the Snow.” It was produced at St Marys of the Harbor Parish Hall. Carl played a clown and Barbara Dennis and Barbara Baker were heroines. Jim Forsberg directed and Horace Snow of Truro was the station master. Ray directed “The Twelve Pound Look.” The next year we moved to the Art Association and we put on Carl’s play “Where Did Roger Go?" and Jim’s play “Transitions.” The group went on for several years and after moving through several phases, became the present Provincetown Theater Group.
Ray helped also to form the first Provincetown Group Gallery to show mainly the artists associated with Provincetown such as Ross Moffett and his wife Dorothy Lake Gregory, Arthur Cohen, Sal Del Deo, Mischa Richter, Victor De Carlo and Joan Perreira, to name a few. I participated in most of the shows and ran a retrospective of the group at PAAM after the gallery had been in operation for ten years.

Things began to shift into a new era after the assassination of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King. It began to be the age of peaceniks because of the Vietnam War. Hippies began to arrive in town and stay year round, living on odd jobs and unemployment. The energy that had been sparked by the end of WW2 and the Korean War began to shift to more geometric and minimal forms but all in all it was a very creative time in Provincetown, a time of enormous energy.
CONSTANCE BLACK has been living in Provincetown since the 1950s. A graduate of Vesper George School of Art in Boston, she came to the Cape to study at the Cape School of Art. After marrying, she studied with Jim Forsberg and took numerous courses in printmaking, most often at the Fine Arts Work Center. Black has exhibited extensively on Cape Cod as well as at the Pen and Brush Society in New York City.

Through my mixed media images I continue to explore the heart and mind of the one who moves through the world once removed from it; the outsider, the one with a secret, the other. The observer who neither condones nor condemns.

PROVINCETOWN IN THE
70s Didn’t everybody read Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut back in the 60’s? I did. In that book, Vonnegut coined the term karass, meaning a group of people linked in a cosmically significant manner. An early observation of Provincetown was that several of these groups existed here, occupying the same town but not necessarily interacting, and only vaguely aware of each other. It was my curious nature that propelled me to traverse from one karass to another, affording me a richness of experience not likely found elsewhere. My first encounter with a Provincetown karass was in 1969 at Syracuse University where I had a friend from Baltimore. On a lark, the two of us made a trip to Provincetown to visit some of his other Baltimore friends: Steve and Bonnie (and little Douglas) Annarino, John Leissenring, John Waters, and Cookie Mueller to name a few. On that weekend visit in the spring of 1970, I met people from another karass, Nickerson Street neighbors of the Annarinos: Ron Shuebrook, Hyla and Bob Brobowski and others who were part of the Fine Arts Work Center. Through them, I applied for and was awarded a Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship that brought me to Provincetown on October 1, 1970 and I have been here ever since.
82 | provincetownartguide.com
This karass concept is not like a melting pot where the elements merge nor is it a fruit salad where the elements are individual but integrated. It’s more like a lasagne or tiramisu—distinct individual layers that don’t mix, but the flavors may permeate each other and the sum is greater than the whole. This is how I found Provincetown. At the Work Center, I met some of Provincetown’s art royalty: Myron Stout, Pat de Groot, Jim Forsberg, Tony Vevers, Fritz Bultman, Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, Richard Pepitone—the list goes on and on. Whenever I paid a visit to Myron it was an occasion that often included going out to dinner and then staying up late in the night. When I first met Jim at his Studio Shop art supply store his skeptical nature put me to the test. As I was purchasing some paint he pointed to this box of triangular wooden wedges and asked, “What are those?” and I replied with an obvious look of incredulity, “Why they’re stretcher keys.” Having easily passed the test he explained, a little

embarrassed, that there were too many Sunday painters that had no idea and he needed to make sure of me. After that he offered his unwavering support along with his unvarnished criticisms. One could stay in that milieu, be content and even flourish but after working in the studio I would stroll down to the Fo’c’s’le Bar alone or with some of my artist friends. There, you could sit happily at your table and remain fixed or very easily drift to another where local fishermen were holding forth. That’s how I met Dickie Oldenquist, Lobsterman Al Silva, Draggerman Freddy Shula, David Salvatore, David Dutra, Dick Grady and many more and eventually got a site for a time on a scallop boat. That’s how I learned that, even in 1971 with around 60 draggers fishing out of Provincetown, the fleet was a shadow
84 | provincetownartguide.com
of its former self and spiraling downward. Also at the Fo’c’s’le, I met Jackson Lambert, a singular artist, writer and wit who never in the 40 odd years I knew him had raised his voice. He once told me, “I never trust anybody who isn’t drunk and up to their elbows in paint.” But walking the other way up to the end of Pearl Street, I wandered into the Cape School of Art where Henry Hensche maintained the sacred flame of Charles Hawthorne‘s distinct color theories—yet another distinct karass of Provincetown’s art world that included Hilda Neily, Rob Longley and a legion of plein air painters. I enjoyed sitting in on several of Henry’s demonstration sessions, became friends with him and his artist wife Ada Raynor. They both became featured artists in the Eye of Horus gallery I established for Napi Van Dereck. Henry was dour and stern but he had enough humor and self-deprecation to
tell me the story about when he was Mr. Hawthorne’s assistant in charge of the work scholarship students and class monitors. Henry related, “One day I went to Mr. Hawthorne with a complaint about one of the work/study students who had failed to clean the master’s palette and brushes after the demonstration, abandoning them in favor of running off into the dunes with a girl from the class. Henry was expecting to enforce some sort of reprimand, but Hawthorne simply replied, “Henry, some things are more important than washing brushes.”
Taking a stroll down Commercial Street was to go to the carnival every day. Provincetown was in its honky-tonk height with music everywhere and intriguing shops filled with artists, craftsmen and artistans of all stripes plying their trades. Skill and ingenuity spewed everywhere. Mal Newman had a thriving portrait studio with a half-dozen or so other artists and there were several other studios—Bob Roark, Jim Green, Marcus Smith, Tom Moore, Simi Maryles, Lois Griffel and a whole bunch more. Nearby

were a slew of caricature artists including Charles “Duffy Did It” Duffy. He’s the last of that breed remaining and thankfully, “Duffy still does it.” Leather workers, jewelers and silversmiths flourished and it was in the window of the Handcrafter (east of Whaler’s Wharf ) where I found my old classmate from high school, Craig Littlewood, making intricate and ornate ivory carvings. I still remember the little sign he had: “Prices $5 and up, mostly up.” Often one karass would be peripherally linked to another. The art world had some overlapping with the theater world and for a time I fell in with Charles Horne and Edmond DiStasi of the Provincetown Theater Company. One summer with Charles Horne, Peter Team, Bonnie Horowitz and a small commune of artists and musicians we created the multi-media New Moon Magic Theater. Regular music productions like Pierre Beauregard and Jimmy Thackery’s Power House Blues Band alternated with theater productions like Act IV with Beverly Bentley and a troupe of equity actors.

its infamous proprietor Reggie Cabral. I was sitting in the Little Bar (being served drinks by Joe Giovino and Victor Alexander) when I struck up a conversation with the Reggie himself. He first took me for a hippie/ cowboy but when I started asking him about white-line woodcut artists like Mabel Pugh, Ora Inge Maxim and Agnes Weinrich we crossed into an artworld friendship that lasted 25 years.
Jug Band members from left: Joe Bones, Gino Haggerty and Tim Dickey. Original woodcut by Tina Dickey.
Then there was the Surf Club with The Provincetown Jug and Marching Band—Gino Haggerty, Joe Bones, George “Jug” Rhodes, Blackfish, Moe Van Dereck and an ever-expanding cast of musicians and jokesters. I first met Joe Bones outside of the Surf Club. I was hired by Richard Pepitone to do some small repairs of some leaks in the crawl space of a house he owned and rented out. I knocked on the door at the ungodly hour of 8am, not realizing that the tenant, Joe Bones had only gotten off work a few short hours ago. Ever gracious, he let me in and as I set about my work Joe picked up his guitar and said, “Well, I’m awake now, so you might as well have some music to do plumbing by.” After I was done my work Joe showed me some of the easier songs and we started jamming—and haven’t stopped yet. Of course the night club scene was flourishing—even through the winter—The Back Room at the Crown and Anchor, Back Street at the Gifford House, The Pied Piper, and of course the legendary “A” House with 86 | provincetownartguide.com
In this music and dance milieu several karasses could be encountered including the after-work bar and restaurant crowd, the carpenters and tradesmen and the straight hippies blending with the gay hippies alongside the pioneer drag queens and showgirls. I always considered this traversing from karass to karass a natural thing but when I worked for Captain Justin Avellar on the Schooner Hindu I learned that such crossovers were not the norm. One day while driving through town with my Captain, he observed people saying “Hi” to me or waving and said, “Goddamit, Billy. I've lived here all my life and you know more people than I do.”
BILL EVAUL came to Provincetown in 1970 as a Visual Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center. After working as director, curator and arts administrator for numerous galleries and arts organizations he has finally opened his own Studio/Gallery at 347 Commercial Street, where he can be found working every day, year-round.
