Be Local, Buy Local ALPINE Shire Council has thrown its support behind the need to buy local, as businesses work hard to adjust to a second round of Stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions. Stage 3 restrictions have seen the temporary closure of a number of local businesses and Council facilities. Mayor Peter Roper said it is more important than ever to support those businesses that are closest to home. “We’re so fortunate to have such vibrant townships and incredible businesses right on our doorsteps,” he said. “Under normal circumstances, our hospitality offerings alone can rival anything in the state, let alone our retail, experience and service businesses. “We’re so proud of our business community, which keeps adapting and rolling with the changes month after month. “So please, support local businesses if you can. Buy local, make use of the Buy from Bright and Surrounds online store, grab a coffee or a takeaway meal - our businesses need local support to get them through this.” The Buy from Bright and Surrounds e-commerce platform gives local businesses the opportunity to trade online without the need to create their own online store. The platform is making it easy and inexpensive for small local businesses and producers to sell online, helping to support them when shoppers aren’t walking

online stores. BDCC Initiatives: The Bright Chamber exists to help members start, grow and increase returns from their businesses and, in turn, support the community through employment and community involvement. By running the Spring and Autumn Festivals, (showcasing the Spring
Carnival and Fireworks and Autumn Gala Day Parade) we encourage visitors into the community which in turn helps businesses grow and provide employment for locals. The monthly Bright market is where new businesses, artisans and hobby businesses can share their ideas and products in a low
cost, low risk environment. The newly established Bright Coworking is an affordable and vibrant workspace for local business owners and professionals. This successful initiative supports those wanting to run a business from home, but have need to escape the home on occasion and network with others. We also provide regular networking and training opportunities for members. The strength of the Chamber, and what we can achieve, is directly affected by the amount of money raised through membership subscriptions and volunteer time. To continue the work we do for the community, we need your support. Visit brightchamber.com.au for more information about becoming a member or volunteering on one of our subcommittees.

A heartfelt thank you! By Leanne Harris, Bakery Manager Beechworth Bakery Bright
“What a year, right?! Two years ago, when we started on this adventure opening in beautiful Bright, who would have thought that our second year here would bring everything that it has so far? When I took over the job of managing this bakery last year, I had no idea what I was in for. Running a bakery is a demanding job at the best of times, where you have to be in equal parts a people manager, a team member who can step in wherever needed, an efficient administrator who can do a fulltime job in snatches of 5 minutes here and there, a weather forecaster who knows what the next day will bring, a handyperson who can fix anything that goes wrong, and a bit of a clairvoyant who can foretell the future in terms of how many of each product we need for each tomorrow. Running a bakery this year, however, adds a whole other dimension!

Having said that, though, I’d like to express how blown away we have been by the support and loyalty we have received from this community. We’re a busy little bakery, and I am proud of the fact that we employ quite a large number of locals, covering shifts seven days a week that start at 2am in the morning and run all the way through to 6pm (although due to this year’s events we have had to bring our closing time forward). Even though we are part of the Beechworth Bakery family of bakeries, this is our local bakery and it is as much a part of our local community as we are.
The same still applies today in all our locations.
Even back in 1984, when the Beechworth Bakery first opened, the business has always believed in being an integral part of the community, supporting, championing and getting involved in it as much as we could.
I also love that so many of our customers tell me how they like not having to watch the clock so closely because they know we are open early and close late, and there is always a good choice to be had no matter what time they visit.
My team and I would sincerely like to thank you for your support through thick and thin, and as a small token of our appreciation we would like to invite you to come in this week, grab a cup of coffee and we’ll throw in a delicious donut of your choice. See you soon!

Dickens Real Estate – Locals since 1953 BEING dedicated to the community is in the DNA of the owners and staff at Dickens Real Estate. Dickens Real Estate is family owned and operated employing 12 local staff members - we are the largest local agency providing the highest level of care for our owners, buyers and renters. We have a long history of always being here for our community – in good times and in tough times. That is real estate to a tee of course. We are often dealing with heightened emotions, difficult situations, multiple people wishing to purchase or lease the same property and their highs of being successful and the lows of missing out all at the same time. Not that we would have it any other way! That is why we offer experienced professionals dealing with what is often the most valuable asset you will ever own. We use the SMART SALE METHOD when selling real estate. This doesn’t mean that that we don’t adapt to change or have a “one size fits all” approach. It’s just that we have a set of principles that underpin making excellent decisions at the right time through the process.
Dickens Real Estate consistently sell the most properties, for the highest prices, have the highest number of buyers to deal with and continue to be the market leaders through their incredible hard work and devotion to getting the very best for our clients. But we don’t just sell. We also have the largest property rental portfolio in town as well encompassing permanent, holiday and commercial rentals.
We have a team of 4 in our sales department which means that we are ALWAYS available and are prepared to give our clients a written guarantee for the service we provide and best of all we offer our owners complete peace of mind with our “No Sale No Fee” agreement - where you pay nothing at all unless we get you a sale.
So when it comes to renting your home, why would you use anyone else. In July according to domain.com.au we held an 87% market share of available rental properties and leased properties on average in half the time of other local agencies. Why have your home empty, when you could be using the services of a dedicated team of 5 to make sure you property is rented at all times and managed as if it’s our own home.
Hint! - do not list your property with an agent who won’t guarantee their service and never pay an agent any money upfront for advertising!

OVENS VALLEY HEALTH When archaeologist’s discovered the burial site of “Neanderthal Man” in 1960, they also uncovered a practice of herbal medicine extending back 60,000 years. The more recent history, from approx. 3000 BC is well documented with Greek physician, Hippocrates, advocating strongly for “Food as Medicine”. Ovens Valley Health proudly carries forward the message and work of these early pioneers and brings ancient wisdom into an exciting, new era of traditional health care. “With a long line of Celtic and Viking ancestry, there was certainly a pull toward herbal healing from an early age for me,” says Ovens Valley Health’s owner and principal practitioner, Kellie Sheppard “but the real inspiration for me to pursue traditional healing came about as a result of chronic health issues that I felt were poorly managed and misunderstood by modern medicine.” Ovens Valley Health is, therefore, the culmination of 30 years of

Tim McCurdy MP Member for Ovens Valley Supporting our community in challenging times Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy is continuing to support the local community as the impacts of coronavirus hit the region hard. Mr McCurdy said Alpine Valley residents had diligently adhered to COVID-19 restrictions and everyone was doing their bit to stay safe and protect each other. “It’s been an incredibly tough time for Alpine communities, local business is really feeling the brunt of the restrictions,” Mr McCurdy said. “The loss of tourism and the impacts on the ski season are devastating. “But people are bravely smiling behind their masks, they are continuing to work very hard, adapting in as many ways as possible to carry on.” Mr McCurdy said it was vital that we all support local business in any way possible. “Wherever possible, please do everything you can to support local businesses – they really are the lifeblood of our communities and their importance to us has never been more apparent. “Many businesses are adapting to adhere to the restrictions while continuing to trade including online and contact free options and take away menus from food retailers. “I also really want to acknowledge and thank the front line and essential workers in our region who are doing a fantastic job in very challenging circumstances.”
Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy is supporting the local community.
Mr McCurdy continues to advocate for the need for State Government support for local communities. “I have highlighted that so many local businesses had already lost their summer trade as a result of the bushfires and are now they are being hit again due to the impacts of coronavirus. “These businesses are desperate for Victorian Government help.” Mr McCurdy said it had never been more important to support each other. “From Myrtleford, Bright, Ovens, Harrietville, Porepunkah and all the communities in between let’s pull together and look after each other, buy local whenever we can and stay safe so we can get through this.” While Mr McCurdy’s office is currently closed to face-to-face contact please phone 5721 6155 or email tim.mccurdy@parliament.vic.gov.au for assistance

The bank that keeps on giving back Bright Community Bank have wrapped up another successful financial year, contributing almost $90,000 back into the community in the last 12 months. Bright Community Bank have now contributed over $450,000 back into the Bright and Myrtleford communities and surrounds. This October will mark 14 years since the Branch opened in Bright, throughout this time they have provided over $450,000 to local community groups, events and projects through their sponsorship and grants programs. The Community Bank provides the local community with more than just quality banking services – they deliver employment opportunities
for local people, keep local capital in the community and provide a source of revenue for important community projects as determined by the local community. The Community Bank model sees that 80% of the business’s profits are returned to the local community through sponsorships, donations and grants. The sponsorship program is open year-round and community groups are welcomed to submit an application for consideration. Application forms can be obtained by contacting the Branch. Branch Manager Mark Ditcham said their core values were to make it easy for their customers to do business with the
Community Bank, to provide great service & assistance to our customers and to give back to the local community, however none of this would be possible without the support of their customers and local shareholders. “Bright Community Bank wouldn’t be able to do what it does without the support of local shareholders and customers. We thank all of those who bank with us because it means we can give money to our local communities that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible.” It is also with thanks to the Board of Directors that the Community Bank can continue to operate. A group of community minded individuals that volunteer their time for the ultimate
benefit of the communities in which we live. Despite a challenging year, the Community Bank’s products and services remain unchanged and the Branch remains busy. “We’ve seen a lot of people choosing to switch their banking to the Community Bank. This is very exciting as it ultimately results in more money that we can give to the community through our sponsorship program.” The Branch also pride themselves on being readily accessible and easily contactable. The Branch is open from 9:30am until 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. They are also easily contactable via phone or email.

Service with a smile JUNE was the start of a new era for the Rizzi family who took over the Liberty service station in Myrtleford. They are committed to providing quality service to the community and recently introduced takeaway orders over the phone while continuing their popular grab and go meals for those on the run. “It is very exciting for us,” Kim Rizzi said. “It is great to be able to bring the service back into the town and to put back into the community as well. We look forward to be able to give back and support the smaller groups in town. “We are locals and we’ve been here all our lives so all the money we make will go back into the town so it’s a good thing.” The multi-million dollar development has been a head-turning feature on Great Alpine Road since its opening late last year and has been described a “lovely, bright” investment in the town. “We’ve got a state of the art facility here – nowhere between Wangaratta and Bright has anything like this,” Mrs Rizzi said. “Lots of things have changed and we are learning new things every day, especially with the compliance side of things.” Taking on a new business is daunting at the best of times but the Rizzi’s decided to ride the wave and “go for it” because of

their experience in the industry. The duo managed Myrtleford’s Caltex in the 1980s but both admitted this experience has already been very different. Kim and Cesare’s children Kyle and Jasmine will be involved as the family works to find their feet in this next adventure.

“The kids will be involved on the weekends that we want off and I think we will employ a few new people along the way. We want to play it by ear and see how it goes,” Mrs Rizzi said. “This facility will allow us to do what we want and allow us to do it well.”

BANG on family business Roshelle and Lance Harrison of Bright Activities Novelties & Games or better know as BANG Toy Shop opened their doors 14 years ago when they realised there was a gap in the retail market for their type of products in the Alpine area. With Roshelle’s extensive retail experience, now totaling over 28 years, opening a family business was an easy decision and its been one they have never regretted. It has given the Harrison family an opportunity to work and grow together in a community that they love. They pride themselves on being open all year round. The only day they are closed is Christmas day plus the odd closure due bushfire evacuations and of course upon the birth of their second daughter. Both Taya and Holly have been a fixture in the store growing up, often seen in the play pen and surrounded by toys and games - it seems like most kids dream. The girls have outgrown the play pen and now can be seen on the cash register and helping their

parents run the shop. Their weekend team includes resident game expert and local locksmith Michael Balfour and former childcare worker Ev Brooks, who knows exactly what the kids want. The store is jam packed with stock from over 60 suppliers,
which have been chosen very carefully with much consideration to what they would like happily in their own home. They prefer to offer a large variety of products as opposed to large quantities of the same stock. BANG are the game specialists with classic board games as well
as card, travel, party, strategy and solitaire games on the shelves. The store not only caters to parents looking for unique and educational gifts for their children, but to adults who still love their toys. They are the place to go for something unique that you won’t find at the major retailers. You can find everyone’s favourite Ravensburger and Holdson jigsaw puzzles at BANG which are perfect for every age group, especially in winter and during the coronavirus isolation. They also stock other favourite brands like Smart Games, WOW TOYS, Duplo, Tiger tribe, Ugears, Adrenaline scooters and skateboards, Regent sports and of course, Lego! Come and visit BANG in beautiful Bright with their fully stocked shop. But if you can’t make it in, they are very happy to send your toys or games wherever you are. The company has made the switch to a combination of solar, wind and hydro power as part of its broader sustainability strategy. The strategy is designed to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the 50 sites Mawsons currently operate across regional Victoria and southern NSW. Mawsons’ managing director, John Mawson, said he is very proud that his company was the first Australian concrete and quarry business to make the
switch to 100 percent renewable electricity from the grid. “We believe that this is the right thing for us to do and that now is the right time to do it,” Mr Mawson said. “Anything that helps to reduce global warming and lower the chances of drought and bushfires in the future is well worthwhile. “We also believe in helping local industries to grow and the renewable power sector is a major investor and employer in regional Australia.”
Starting September 1 this year, Mawsons will buy its mains supply electricity through Engie, a European company that generates and sells electricity all around the world. The Australian division of Engie owns several of the largest renewable energy facilities in the country and also sources power from other wind, solar and hydroelectric generators. Specialist energy purchasing consultants, 1 Circle, negotiated a flexible, long term network supply agreement for Mawsons. When asked about power prices Mr Mawson said “while renewable power is a little more expensive now we expect that its costs will continue to come down. “We also have a program installing solar collector panels across many of our sites.” Mawsons expects that these collectors will generate additional sustainable power to be fed back into the grid and allow the company to lower costs. It is anticipated that some Mawsons’ product prices will actually come down as a result. Rob Humphreys of R&R Quality Homes said “It’s a great thing Mawsons are doing”. Rob believes his customers will take comfort in knowing the concrete for their R&R Quality Homes is being supplied by a responsible company.

Meet Lee Docherty and Caroline Bellchambers The aroma of fresh warm spices fills Lee Docherty's studio and store. She and her sister-in-law Caroline Bellchambers are hand making soap and candles in their homewares store, Gather and Harvest, based in the heart of Mount Beauty. Here, the two make and sell a range of beautiful, everyday ethical, and sustainable objects. What they don't make themselves they supplement with superb pieces from local artists and products from social enterprises. Their range of exquisitely scented candles is made in their Mount Beauty studio, too. Soy wax is scented and then poured into what were once glass bottles that are cut and shaped by a women's community group in Bali. "Being ethical is essential to what Gather and Harvest does," says Lee. "I lived in Bali for some time, and I worked alongside these women. “Years later, during COVID19, we were still able to buy the recycled glass bottles from the women, giving them income so they could buy their children the uniforms they were required to wear to attend school." Lee grew up in Gundowring. Her grandfather was a cattleman in the Bogong High Plains. This is somewhere very special to her and her family, the place they still walk through during summer when the air is cool and clear. "Being connected to the area is important to both me and Caroline," says Lee. "We want to be accessible to our local customers. They are the people who have kept us afloat for the past six months. Looking after each other is so important."
