Family firm’s big achievement By KYLIE WILSON STAFF members at local firm Cleal Constructions are still smiling about their big wins at last month’s 2013 HIA North East Victoria Regional Housing Awards. A home built for local couple Paul and Rachel Hogan won the award for Custom Built Home up to $350,000 and the North East Victoria Greensmart Energy Efficiency award. Meanwhile, a home built especially for the

Cleal family, which also houses the offices for Cleal Constructions’ operations, won the award for Custom Built Home over $700,001. The awards were held at Albury’s Commercial Club. “We were very happy,” said Emma Cleal of Cleal Constructions. “We were not expecting to win anything.” The awards are another feather in the cap for the company, with the Hogan home recently honored as a finalist in the Custom Built Home

category in HIA’s National Greensmart awards. The Hogan home is also in the running for a state award in the same category this week. Cleal Constructions also made a strong showing at the recent Master Builders Association of Victoria Awards, being honored as finalists in all the categories they entered. The family owned and run company has built up steadily over the past 18 years, from being initially run as a partnership between

the husband and wife team of Steve and Emma Cleal, to now boasting a team of seven staff, including three carpenters and two apprentices. Energy Efficient & Environmentally Conscious Design

CREATING a comfortable and sustainable home was high on the list for Paul and Rachel Hogan, whose home won two awards at the HIA North East regional awards last month. With primary school teacher Rachel originally hailing from Wangaratta, it was a natural choice for the couple to make a treechange from Melbourne and establish their home here. “We found five acres in a really nice spot,” Mr Hogan said. “We could build the exact home we wanted in a beautiful location.” Mr Hogan said the planning process for the home, which took place using local building designer Tracey Toohey, took about 10 months and was an educational process. “We learnt a lot,” he said. “Tracey was ‘fantastic’,” Mr Hogan said, adding that he and his wife wanted the home to accommodate future family needs as well as be ethical and practical, with a light environmental footprint.

“It was easy for us to understand the process,” he said. “And we became more educated and more informed about sustainable building.” Mr Hogan, a former employee at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, enjoyed the design process and watching his home take shape so much that he pursued an advanced diploma in building design and is now part of the Cleal Constructions team himself. He praised Cleal Constructions for their willingness to include them in the building process and to answer any ongoing questions. Mr Hogan said he and Rachel were very pleased with their finished home, with his favorite rooms including the open plan living areas and the main bedroom, with its view of local mountains in the distance. “It was about us not having anything too elaborate that we didn’t need and living within our means,” Mr Hogan said. “It’s quite a simple and practical layout.”
