Camping grounds are already filling with keen campers getting out and nabbing their spots prior to the huge influx this week. Lake Eildon is sitting at almost 88 per cent full with an average inflow of 1500 megalitres a day which means there will be even more water for fun. The bike trails are ready to go with the Great Victorian Rail Trail being maintained and giving great riding experiences.
On Mt Buller and Mt Stirling upgrading trail works are being carried out and mountain bikers are promised a great ride whichever path they choose. New Year’s Eve will be a big event both on Mt Buller and in Mansfield with music, dinners and entertainment across the district. Daytime activities for the whole family include a visit to the Mansfield Zoo on Jamieson Road, the High
Country Maze and Art Gallery at Gough’s Bay, spend time at the Mini Golf venue in High Street, take a walk around town and view some of the historic buildings. While out walking venture into the wetlands starting at the Visitor Information Centre; view the amazing bird and wildlife in the wetlands. Take a picnic at the Botanic Park and let the kids enjoy the new
playground - it is amazing. Of course there are plenty of places to grab a meal, dine out in style or pack a picnic lunch. For full information on what to do and where to go around Mansfield visit the Mansfield Visitor Information Centre - open from 10am to 4pm daily. Inside this issue of High Country Alive you will find things to do, places to visit and fun to be had.

Summer fun for all ages at Mansfield Picnic Races THE Mansfield Hygain Cup on Sunday, January 9 will provide a great day of picnic racing for all ages. In addition to six thrilling races, there will be a host of entertainment at Mansfield’s picturesque and spacious course. Junior racegoers (16 years and under) receive free entry and will be entertained in the Foodworks Kids Funzone by live entertainers, rides, face painting and Kelly Sports. Young fashionistas are invited to don their most fabulous outfit and enter Fashions on the Field on the main stage, where there are great prizes to be won. The fashions competition, sponsored by Delatite Wines, also features a number of adult categories and amazing prizes, including accommodation and meal packages, and thrilling High Country experiences such as a Global Ballooning sunrise flight. The main stage will also be the venue for performances by family favourites Mr Marvel and Tim Tam, and musical entertainment by talented Mansfield sisters Rose and Scarlett Hanratty. Another musical treat
FASHION & FUN: On the rails at the forthcoming January 9 Mansfield Hygain Cup racegoers dressed for fashion will also enjoy watching the thrill of racing. will be a performance of the National Anthem by popular songstress and former Mansfield local Marcelle Knapp, prior to the running of the Cup. Senior racegoers are able to take advantage of discounted entry and will find plenty of shade and seating for a
comfortable day on the course. In addition to the historic grandstand and picnic tables under shady trees, a new Seniors Seating initiative has been introduced, providing chairs and tables under shade cover for patrons 65 years and over. Race club president Leanne Backwell points out that new
family friendly initiatives have been made possible through Business and Community Recovery Funding via the Mansfield Shire and Victorian State Government. The grant has also assisted the club to provide a safe travel option of free shuttle buses from Bonnie Doon,
Jamieson and Merrijig and to implement a power upgrade on the course, reducing the need for generators. “One of the Mansfield District Racing Club’s key initiatives is to provide a great picnic racing experience for all ages and the funding has helped us to improve the
racecourse and the activities that enhance the day’s experience,” she said. Mansfield’s racing history will be another major element of the meeting. 2022 will see the 167th running of the Mansfield Cup and the 90th year it has been held at the current course. In 1996, a huge crowd watched pony sized local horse Wee Jimmy come from last to round up the field and win the cup by a nose. We Jimmy, owned by MDRC committee member Philip Corr, has been in retirement at Bonnie Doon for several years, but will return to the scene of his great win to lead the Mansfield Cup field on to the track. All information on ticketing, hospitality packages, MDRC membership, fashion competition categories and race times can be found on www.mansfieldcountry races.com.au or www.country. racing.com/mansfield. MANSFIELD ALIVE: Festivals, parades, markets, entertainment and much more are set to return for the 2022 year in Mansfield and surrounding district.
Festivals, events and visitors set to return to Mansfield MANSFIELD and district is finally getting back to some normality following an almost two year glitch with the COVID pandemic. In the past Mansfield township itself has been a hive of festivals, activities and events which for the past 20 months had eased right down and in some cases almost extinct. However, festivals and events are on a comeback. Christmas festivities have included many ‘office parties’, carols and picnic in the median strip, a visit from Santa, window displays and shop local competitions.
But, coming up are more events to entice visitors to the area. New Year’s Eve will again see the return of parties across the district and big celebrations on Mt Buller with Australia Day plans in the making for January 26. As part of the Australia Day weekend the bush market will return in Highett Street, and postponed during the High Country Festival weekend the Median to Rare exhibition will be held on January 22. In February the Holden Classic is set to be held in and around Mansfield with a Show ‘n Shine display, Botanic
Park concert and a meet and greet the drivers and families. Also in February will be the Targa High Country, also postponed from November which will be held over three days February 11, 12 and 13. And the annual Tolmie Sports Day will be held on Saturday, February 12. Heading into March will be the Tour de Trail (now set on the calendar as an annual bike ride on the Great Victorian Rail Trail and organised by the Friends of the Rail Trail), the Merrijig Rodeo, the Lake Eildon Water Festival and the Highline Mountain Biking Festival.
The mountain biking festival is set to take place at the Rifle Butts Reserve from March 25 to 28 and is expected to attract up to 3000 people. In the mix of course will be the Labour Day weekend activities (March 15) - a three day period where Mansfield and surrounding camping grounds are full to the brim. And that is just the start of the year to come. So, Mansfieldians and visitors be prepared. Get set for a year of excitement, entertainment and festivals - getting back to normal.
AT Global Ballooning, they always find there is a fusion of underlying celebrations occurring between couples, groups or solo flyers. It’s a special experience best enjoyed when there is a meaning behind why you are flying. Unlike helicopter flights, a balloon flight allows passengers to embrace one another and really take in everything that this bird’s eye view has to offer. Not many passengers know this until they take flight, but the movement is not something you feel up in the air. It is the most amazing lighter-than-air experience that cannot be felt anywhere else. Some reasons why their passengers fly with them are to celebrate birthdays, proposals, anniversaries, received as a Christmas or graduation gift, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Day or to tick ballooning off their bucket list. A balloon flight is something they will cherish for years to come. If you’re known for being symbolic - letting go and allowing them to fly high into the ‘real world’, then this is more than perfect. Book your Mansfield ballooning experience today and see why they’ve proudly flown over 100k passengers over the past 30 years. If you’re gonna go ballooning, you’ve gotta go global.

The races are on at Merton

Celebrate the New Year at the Moosehead Blues Roulette at The Abom,, Mt Bullerr THE luxury of sitting in a bar, sipping on a tall Mojito followed by a tasty craft beer as live Rhythm and Blues fill the room it just doesn’t get any better. But we know not to take these things for granted and how good they make us feel. So, it was with the greatest pleasure the crowd welcomed back the iconic Melbourne Blues band ‘Blues Roulette’, making the first of their summer appearances a very happy occasion on December 4, the launch of the summer season on Buller. And it is lucky for all that Blues Roulette are returning for the biggest night of the year - New Year’s Eve. Not only are they breathing life back into our hearts and minds,
they are restoring the Moosehead to its former speakeasy glory. The red velvet curtains are glowing under the rosy hue of the assorted lamps, leather lounges are scattered throughout and intimate marble tables set closer to the stage, ready for a spectacular night and a line-up of artists even the Roulettes can’t believe has come together. In the words of Blues Roulette founder and bass player Ben Wicks, “We’ve put together a seven piece RnB monster to chuck a big Rhythm and Blues party at the Moosehead. “Amazing artists such as Anthony Biancofiore - Fandango; James Cisco - Cisco Caesar; Paul Slattery - the Moreland City Soul Revue; and of course Ben Wicks Melbourne’s Blues Roulette plus
more. “It doesn’t happen again - never the same. Lightning doesn’t strike twice.” And if you thought it couldn’t get any better, there’s the hospitality of the Moosehead crew, rolling out a generous food and beverage package. Think canapés, snacks and substantial dishes prepared by executive chef Ross O’Meara and a three hour beer and wine beverage offering - all included in your ticket price of just $130. Ride the GRVT and mountain trails for health and fun this summer
ON YA BIKES: Mt Buller and Mt Stirling offer excellent downhill trails for keen mountain bike riders - including the now very popular 40km Epic Trail. PHOTO: Mt Buller Gallery
THE Great Victorian Rail Trail (GRVT) is the ideal track to bike ride during the summer months. And not forgetting the fantastic mountain biking trails of Mt Buller and Mt Stirling for the more adventurous bike riders. Breaking the GVRT into sections gives bike riders the advantage of choosing how far or which section to ride on any one day, or over several days. Along the way there are stopovers, some with camping facilities, toilet stops and even barbecue areas. Cyclists can choose to
about by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns, bike-riding is on the rise. RACV general manager of Arevo Mobility, Elizabeth Kim said the “perfect storm” of events had inspired a surging interest in one of society’s oldest forms of transport. “The pandemic, in addition to some work that has gone into bicycle infrastructure, has created an ideal atmosphere for people to either get on a bike for the first time, or dust off the one in the garage,” Ms Kim said. A 2021 study from We Ride Australia showed that 1.7 million bikes were purchased
start at Tallarook and ride towards Mansfield or vice versa - each section about 20 - 40km long. On Mt Buller-Mt Stirling trails there are various lengths and grading of difficulty to choose from, short lengths to the full 40km Epic trail. And recently the RACV called for Victorians to maintain the trend that has seen a boom in bike riding over the past two years, citing benefits for health, daily commuting and the economy. On the back of significant infrastructure spending and lifestyle changes brought
across the nation in 2020, with a further 4.1 million Australian adults spending money on cycling-related goods and services. We Ride Australia found that cycling’s direct industry output as part of the Australian economy was $6.3 billion in 2020, supporting 34,295 full-time jobs. “RACV is here to foster that enthusiasm and lend our voice and services to ensure that those who jumped on a bike for the first time during the pandemic make bike riding a part of their weekly routine long after COVID-19 restrictions are over,” Ms Kim said.
Buller set for sizzling summer MT Buller blazed into summer recently with a bumper weekend and is looking forward to a stunning summer season of events. Mt Buller’s vast trail network is squarely on the radar for riders this summer thanks to $1+ million in improvements to the XC and gravity network, including iconic trails such as Delatite River Trail and the Australian Alpine Epic which saw solid rider traffic eager to sample the updates. The improvements by Contour Works and Trailscapes will continue
over summer, and from the grins in the village, the buzz at the Village Bike Café and the looping bike shuttles this weekend it’s safe to say word is out - Buller is back as a riding destination. During the launch weekend for summer on Buller the timeless tradition of taking in the sunset at Mt Buller’s summit stepped up a level with DJs Zane Velu and Phil Napoli and Melbourne duo MAMI providing a cool groove to the picnic zone as the afternoon eased into twilight. Mt Buller is hosting a series of summer Sunset Sessions,

The Astronomical Society of Victoria will share their expertise with sessions set to continue regularly over the summer - watch Mt Buller’s website for full details. “There are so many great new reasons to plan a stay up here,” said resort spokesperson Rhylla Morgan. “Whether it’s an indulgent long lunch, Christmas snowplay, exploring the night sky or the trail network, or escaping the summer heat you can choose your speed
and find something for everyone. “We are pleased how many people are choosing to give experiences this festive season with gifts they feel good about, don’t have to wrap and that support regional tourism businesses at the same time.” Mt Buller is offering twilight snowplay on real snow in the village daily during the Christmas-New Year week with peak holiday period accommodation still available in the village. Legacy lives on at Snowy Mountain New owners same service at outdoor centre FOR 21 years Helena and Steve Simpkin have successfully ran the Snowy Mountain Outdoor Centre on Mount Buller Road. The local camping, fishing and recreational store is iconic in Mansfield, particularly well known for its exceptional Australian made canvas products which range from horse rugs to some of the best swags money can buy. Locals Rob and Lisa Deeble are taking over the business and are currently working through a festive season handover with Helena and Steve. The history of the store is important to the pair and they’re looking to continue the quality service and manufacturing it’s known for while organically introducing their own vision over time. “The whole history of the business, the heritage of it all, means a lot of to us,” said Rob. “Four-wheel driving, fishing,
and camping are things we’ve always done and loved. “I bought my swag from Snowy Mountain 18 years ago and I’m still using it to this day. “Our son loves his fishing, so over time we’ll look to expand that offering, along with the canvas products, marketing that more and enhancing the online presence. “But ultimately it’ll be about getting a feeling for what the customers want.” The couple brings a diverse range of transferable skills, with experience running accommodation, farming cattle, personal training, hot air balloon piloting (Rob) and even a stint at The Mansfield Courier (Lisa). Buying this business was natural for them, and with the High Country opened back up, Lisa is keen to see locals and tourists alike stop by and see what they have in store. “Come down and have a chat, we want to service the lo-
cals and visitors and make sure they’re happy,” said Lisa. “We’ve got everything, where people might miss out on something somewhere else, we tend to get told we’ve got everything, “With things like our gas refilling - there’s nowhere else in town that does that - and our range. “We’ve got lots of stock here, that’s what Helena and Steve set up, and that’s the legacy we’ll continue.” As for Helena, the hard work has led her to deservedly open plans in the new year. “I’m going to relax for a while, take some time for myself,” she laughed. So while it’s business as usual and adventurers will get the same service and quality gear they’re used to, they’ll also see a couple of smiling new owners and some gradual fresh ideas at the Snowy Mountain Outdoor Centre.

WITH record numbers of Australians flying drones, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) tested the knowledge of recreational drone operators and is urging everyone to “Know your Drone” before taking to the skies during the Christmas break. In recognition of Australia’s burgeoning love of drones, CASA is reinforcing the need for owners - and those seeking to purchase for Christmas - to get familiar with drone safety rules in place to protect people, property and other aircraft. CASA spokesperson Sharon Marshall-Keeffe says testing the knowledge of recreational drone operators revealed 78 per cent of recreational drone owners could correctly identify the rules and almost 30 per cent (29 per cent) believed that breaking the rules was unlikely to endanger others. “It’s incredibly important that recreational drone operators understand the safety risks and fly their

thing, we want to ensure that newcomers to the market understand the safety rules and the requirements for becoming a responsible drone flyer.” With new laws on the way requiring all recreational drone users to be accredited and their drones registered from mid2022, CASA is urging current and future drone operators to be prepared by understanding the safety risks. Home and business lending is going through the roof - but what’s next? DESPITE doom and gloom in the media around the economy, home and business lending is going through the roof. According to research by Savvy pulled from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there’s been a 95 per cent increase in household lending from May 2020 to 2021, dipping only slightly in June 2021. All lending over the same period more than doubled $32.57 billion of loans were approved in May 2021, while in May 2020 it stood at $16.66 billion. Investor mortgages followed similar trends: a significant increase of 13.3 per cent year on year. This all points to a surge in lending - but where is it all happening, and what’s next? The far and away leader in the lending surge is New South Wales, peaking at $7.72 billion in May with Victoria $7.11 billion - the two most populated states in Australia. According to the ABS, all eight capital cities’ property prices rose 5.4 per cent in the May quarter, a 7.5 per cent increase year on year. Most states saw a slight dip in June, except for Queensland and the ACT.
REAL ESTATE NEWS: Home and business lending is going through the roof. According to the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia, WA had the lowest median house value in any capital city in Australia. As a result, more people have bought rather than rented. The REIWA estimates a rise of 6-10 per cent in house prices during 2021.
When it comes to investing, New South Wales and Victoria accounted for 70.2 per cent of all investor lending in Australia. Queensland was a distant third, at about half the total of Victoria - and a third of NSW. Why the property lending surge?

The current economic conditions of government stimulus, low interest rates, and a narrowing gap between owner-occupier and investment home loans have spurred on buyers to make the most of what’s available in the lending market. Savvy managing director
Bill Tsouvalas says the signals in the market show that interest rates are as “low as they’re going to get” and that home buyers and investors want to lock in these historically low rates while getting on board with HomeBuilder and the First Home Buyer Scheme.

“These rates and stimulus packages will not last forever, so saving money on interest or having loans guaranteed by the government may be more worthwhile than waiting for prices to fall - which may not happen for a long time looking at these trends,” he said. “So, people are getting in while the going is good.” What happens next? If home buying for occupying slows due to lockdowns affecting wages and employment, the Australian dream of owning that investment property will still prove lucrative. “Vacancy rates are hovering under 3 per cent, and in some places under 1 per cent, like Tasmania,” Tsouvalas said. “Rental yields are going up and that’s better than holding cash in the bank at this point. Unless rates rise in the near term, which seems unlikely, investing in property will continue unabated.” Tsouvalas said that the already narrowing gap between variable and fixed mortgages will squeeze even tighter. “People want to lock in, at least partially, these historically low rates. “It’s really a no brainer.”
Interest rates could be set to rise in 2022 THE Reserve Bank of Australia has opted to keep the official cash rate at its current record-low following its latest board meeting, but a number of economists say that growing inflation means rates will rise earlier than predicted. One third of economists surveyed by comparison website Finder predicted an increase in the official cash rate before the end of 2022, with mortgage rates likely to rise in lockstep. Variable mortgage rates typically follow movements of the official cash rate - it sets the rate at which banks can borrow money from institutional lenders and acts as a benchmark for interest rates on mortgages and term deposits. “The official cash rate is basically the rate at which the bank borrows the money,” explained Finder’s senior home loan editor Sarah Megginson. “If the cash rate goes up it’s likely that banks will increase their variable interest rate to maintain their profit. “That’s why consumers need to keep an eye on rate rises.” Of the economists Finder interviewed for the survey, many indicated that a rise in inflation rates would be pivotal to whether the central bank opted to increase the cash rate. While cash rate predictions mean a rise in variable mortgage rates could be just around the corner, banks have already been raising their fixed-rate products.
