How does your garden grow? WITH a passion for helping clients with their garden needs or tailoring advice to suit different soil types and situations, Glenn and Dina Bigger at Toil and Soil in Newman Street, are here to help you get the best out of your garden and yard. Glenn and Dina took over the business almost a year ago and have enjoyed getting to know new and existing clients of Toil and Soil, and having their children thrive at country sports and school opportunities. “We felt so privileged taking over such a well established business and while we have kept some of the same products, we have expanded and improved the product range,” Dina said. “We offer a bobcat and excavator service, mini mix concrete, sand, feature landscape rocks, bagged products, secondhand sleepers, boulders and we can carry out pothole repairs and small landscaping and driveway jobs. “We are also working with local suppliers and support local sports venues and businesses.” Autumn is an excellent time to prepare garden beds for winter vegetable plantings and

Glenn is particularly proud to offer his own special blend of 3-way and 5-way soils for customers who have challenging soil conditions. “The 3-way is great for most plants including natives, veggie gardens and hedges which might need a bit of extra help to grow effectively,” he explained. “The 5-way is a premium mix, full of nutrients and designed to maximise growth for vegetable gardens in particular. “It improves existing soils and is brilliant to use in raised garden beds where drainage can be problematic. “We also offer a native blend soil specifically.” “We have found the 5-way mix in particular to be very popular with our customers, so much so that we are mixing it every day to keep up with demand,” Dina added. To browse the extensive range of barks, rocks, plumbing fittings and pipe, weed mat, gloves, tools and more, drop in and see Glenn, Dina and the team at 2-14 Provis Street (Corner of Newman and Provis streets), phone 5722 2220 or find them online at www.toilandsoil.com.au or on Facebook.

Autumn in the garden AUTUMN is arguably the loveliest season in the garden. The heat of summer is over, we have had some rain to revive parched gardens and lawns, and the evenings and early mornings have a lovely coolness about them. It’s enough to make you feel inspired to get back out into the garden and enjoy the change in season. Jobs that are timely to do now are; hand weeding gardens and lawns - if hand weeding is too big a job, consider a chemical herbicide (be sure to follow safety recommendations), boiling water or household vinegar are also effective in some situations. Once weeds are removed, top up any mulch that is needed in garden beds and feed lawns - sow lawn seed or plant runners in any bare patches to prevent weeds establishing again. Pull out end of season vegies from vegetable gardens, and freshen up the soil with organic matter - compost or aged cow manure are ideal. Vegies to plant now are

MIX IT UP: Autumn provides wonderful opportunities to add colour to your garden.

Asian greens, broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, garlic, kale, leeks, salad greens and silverbeet. Then mulch with pea straw

to keep weeds at bay, and to add more organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. Autumn is also one of the most spectacular times of year for colour in the garden.

Between changing leaf colours and gorgeous flowering plants, there are so many options for the garden. Some of the best autumn

colouring trees are Japanese maples - check with your local nursery about whether there is one that will suit your garden, as they can be a bit finicky.

Let us help you create a beautiful garden this autumn 95 Park Lane, Wangaratta | (03) 5721 6955 OPEN Mon to Fri: 10.00am - 4.30pm Sat and Sun: 8.30am - 3.00pm

Canadian maples are just as spectacular and are hardier to grow. Ornamental pears really come into their own in autumn with some beautiful leaf colourings - and they are one of the easiest trees to grow in our region. Autumn flowering plants include some interesting natives such as banksias, correas, croweas, grevilleas and philothecas - or wax flowers. These autumn beauties are important for the birds and especially bees who have had a challenging time through the summer. Now is also a great time to plant some cool weather annuals such as dianthus, lobelia, pansies, primulas, poppies, snapdragons and stock - don’t forget to plant spring flowering bulbs now for displays of daffodil, hyacinth, iris and tulips from late August through to October. The most important job for autumn though, is to get outside and notice the small wonders in your garden - there are many to be found if we take the time to look.

Explore Tatanka Gardens for a unique experience TATANKA Gardens is more than just ‘that place that sells plants’; it’s an immersive experience for adults, children and dogs alike and you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even finished your first. When Tammy and Dave Van Loon moved to Eurobin from Geelong with their three young children and dog Mikey in 2018, they wanted to create a destination garden centre that was a fun experience for adults and children alike. Tatanka (pronounced tatun-ka) is Native American for buffalo and the symbol of wild gratitude and abundance, which perfectly fits the environment. “We wanted to create something special and were lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy the old rose farm, which was well known and had so much going for it,” Tammy said. December 2019 saw the official opening of Tatanka Gardens, but the 2019/2020 bushfires followed so closely

by COVID interrupted Dave and Tammy’s plans for the business. They didn’t let it stop them though, using the time to prepare and grow their ideas, ready to welcome visitors when they could. Set in the shadow of the imposing and beautiful Mount Buffalo, Tatanka Gardens is a plant lover’s delight built on a family legacy in horticulture. “It’s an ever-evolving work in progress,” Tammy said. “The outdoor nursery holds a selection of exotic, native, succulent and edible plants, as well as unique outdoor pots, water features and garden art,” Tammy explained. “We’ve turned the existing shed into a large indoor plant space where customers can browse an extensive range of pots, artwork and homewares. “We also have a coffee cart so you can order your favourite brew and a range of cold drinks, ice cream and locally made cakes to enjoy while taking in the gardens and the view.”

With qualified horticulturists on staff you’ll be assured of expert advice on selecting and caring for your plants. Located along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, Tatanka Gardens is bike friendly and visitors can enjoy the shaded outdoor seating area or wander along the banks of the waterway and through the acres of idyllic grounds. Bike racks, a bike pump and water bottle refill points are all available so make sure you have an empty basket to take home a range of goodies. Tatanka Gardens offer group bookings with their ‘talk, coffee and cake package’ as well as workshops and a pop-up exhibition space. For all the latest arrivals, follow Tatanka on Facebook and Instagram. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Tatanka Gardens this autumn and if you need a reminder about where it is, just think: Ta-tun-ka, near Porepunkah.
