IN the 1980s, a clinical psychologist was treating a patient ƚʼnƁņ͂ĝ͂ųņŧĪʼnĝ͂ŧŀ͂ƚĝƁĵŶ͂ŀŧŶ͂ŧƙĵŶ͂ǰ͂ƙĵ͂ months, without making progress. Having studied kinesiology, the psychologist decided to experiment and asked the patient to tap on acupressure points on her face ƚʼnƁņ͂ ņĵŶ͂ ǰ͂ŠŁĵŶź͂ ƚņʼnřĵ͂ źņĵ͂ Ɓĝřŗĵı͂ about her fear of water. Amazingly, the patient’s fear of water completely disappeared by the end of the session. Over the years, this technique ņĝź͂ ĪĵĵŠ͂ Ŷĵǰ͂Šĵı͂ ʼnŠƁŧ͂ Ɓņĵ͂ ųŶĝī̘ tice known as Emotional Freedom Technique (‘EFT’ or ‘tapping’). EFT combines elements of Western ‘talk’ therapy with the
physical act of tapping on acupressure points derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. EFT Practitioner, Sarah Noble, ņĝź͂ ĵƟųĵŶʼnĵŠīĵı͂ ǰ͂ŶźƁ̘ņĝŠı͂ Ɓņĵ͂ emotional relief that EFT can bring. ̢bĝųųʼnŠŁ͂ ʼnź͂ ĝ͂ źʼnşųřĵ͂ ƠĵƁ͂ ĵǥ͂ĵī̘ tive technique to provide emotional and physical relief to the mind and body,” Sarah explained. “It involves a person identifying a negative emotional experience (such as a memory, thought or belief) and ‘tuning in’ to the physical feelings that the issue brings up in their body.” During a tapping round, the person talks about the negative emotional experience while tap-
ping on a sequence of acupressure points on the hands, face, upper torso and head. The act of tapping on the acupressure points sends calming signals to the brain. This typically results in the intensity of the emotional and physical feelings reducing and sometimes disappearing completely. bņĵ͂ ĵǥ͂ĵīƁź͂ ŧŀ͂ Ɓņʼnź͂ īņĝŠŁĵ͂ īĝŠ͂ be permanent, allowing people to completely process the negative emotional experience so they are no longer triggered by it. “What also excites me is that in addition to helping people process negative emotional experiences, tapping can also be used to create
and reinforce positive thoughts, ĪĵņĝƙʼnŧƅŶź͂ ĝŠı͂ ņĝĪʼnƁź͂ ʼnŠ͂ ǰ͂ĵřıź͂ such as weight loss and cravings,” Sarah stated. An example of this is a clinical trial that leading Australian EFT researcher Peta Stapleton conıƅīƁĵı͂ ʼnŠƁŧ͂ Ɓņĵ͂ ĵǥ͂ĵīƁ͂ ŧŀ͂ ƁĝųųʼnŠŁ͂ on food cravings. Participants in the trial had brain scans taken before and after a four week (two hours per week) tapping course. The ‘before’ scans showed parts of their brain being activated when looking at photos of food, triggering their cravings. In the scans taken of participants after the tapping course, the

same parts of the brain were no longer activated by the photos of the food, leading scientists to conclude that the tapping had caused neural pathways in the brain to ‘re-wire’. The trial participants reported ƁņĝƁ͂Ɓņĵźĵ͂ŶĵźƅřƁź͂ƚĵŶĵ͂źƁʼnřř͂ĵǥ͂ĵī̘ tive during a 12 month follow up, illustrating that tapping can produce lasting results. Self-care for busy mums LIFE can seem like it is always busy, especially if you have little ones at home. Add to the mix COVID lockdowns, home schooling and closure of activity zones and it is not only busy, but it can be very stressful as a parent. Many parents have experienced being a secondary school geography teacher, primary school English teacher, dance instructor, football coach and early childhood educator all in one day. How can one person do it all? The answer is, sometimes they can’t without damaging their own health and wellbeing. With such a busy environment, it can also be overwhelming when trying to think of the best ways to replicate preschool or childcare settings. While there are countless resources available for parents, they’re often time consuming, messy, and need a lot of ‘things’. These activities are great for children but there is also learning potential in daily activities, such as: Matching coloured pegs while you hang out the washing;
bĝřŗʼnŠŁ͂ƁņŶŧƅŁņ͂źĝşĵ͂ĝŠı͂ıʼnǥ͂ĵŶ̘ ent when sorting this washing - eg; is this sock the same as this; Counting the cutlery while unpacking the dishwasher or setting the table; Discussing big and little when choosing potatoes for cooking; ņŧŧźʼnŠŁ͂ ĝ͂ īŧřŧƅŶ͂ ĝŠı͂ ǰ͂ŠıʼnŠŁ͂ three things that match that colour; TŧʼnŠƁʼnŠŁ͂ ŧƅƁ͂ źųĵīʼnǰ͂ī͂ řĵƁƁĵŶź͂ ʼnŠ͂ printed junk mail. If your child needs a little extra help, there’s support for you both. You can ask your kindergarten if they are a part of Merri Health’s School Readiness Program. Merri Health also supports children who have a development delay or disability. We connect your child with therapy and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to help achieve their potential. Are you missing out? OVER the past 18 months, we have not needed to be “out and about” so often and we may find it difficult to get the message in our gradually noisier settings as we begin to venture out. Over the past several months, it has been especially important to be able to hear well around home. We have needed to hear a conversation with just a few people at a time, hearing the radio and television well has played an important role in helping keep us informed and the phone has been particularly important to keep in touch with those we cannot see face-to-face. Of course, these situations are generally less challenging as communication usually happens in quieter locations and perhaps we have adapted to getting the message reasonably in quiet locations. For people with some hearing loss, don’t be surprised to find it challenging to hold a conversation in noisier places.
It can be helpful to think of a few strategies to assist. For example, suggest quieter locations to catchup with friends, so noise does not stop you having a great time. It may be easier to have those get-togethers outdoors rather than inside. Perhaps a quieter time of day would be easier. Hearing aid wearers have frequently been delaying appointments for review (is it urgent?), but we should be making those appointments again. If you are experiencing difficulties getting the message, especially in quieter situations, then it is definitely time to get your next appointment booked. If you are having some difficulties hearing and would like to book an appointment with the audiologists at Wangaratta Audiology, call the clinic today on (03) 5722 4433. SAY WHAT?: As we gather in larger groups and outside the home, hearing problems may become more obvious.

What exactly is Functional Medicine? AS conventional or mainstream GPs, the team at Kintsugi are trained to make sense of the constellation of symptoms a patient may present with, and to come up with a diagnosis that explains the symptoms. Dental monitoring has arrived THE year 2020 changed the way Evolve Orthodontics looked at providing the best treatment and experience for their clients. During the course of last year they introduced a number of new systems to overcome Ɓņĵ͂ ıʼnǦ ͂͂īƅřƁʼnĵź͂ ƁņĝƁ͂ ĝŶŧźĵ͂ ıƅĵ͂ to the restrictions in place. They found that these new ways to provide expert treatment have enhanced their patient experience and their clinic has leapt into the new age of orthodontics with the introduction of dental monitoring. bņĵ͂ ƚŧŶřı̥ź͂ ǰ͂ŶźƁ͂ ıƠŠĝşʼnī͂ Orthodontic Treatment Tracking System not only helped the orthodontists and patients communicate during the restrictions and lockdowns, but also enabled the specialists to remotely monitor patients’ orthodontic treatment. Dental Monitoring is a cloud-based program that allows specialists to monitor and structure their patients’ treatment progress using a free, downloadable app on their smart phone. With dental monitoring, patients take and upload a set of basic images using the selfexplanatory app. This incredible tracking
system means that treatment is shaped by personal biology and compliance rather than a standard timeframe. The process, which only takes a few minutes each week, yields high quality videos or photographs that the doctors at Evolve can view and use to assess treatment progress remotely. These visual images further allow specialists to determine whether patients are being compliant, if their oral hygiene needs improvement, or if something happens to be broken and needs replacing. This exciting new technology allows close monitoring of treatment progress and as a result, patients need to be seen less often, while being monitored more often. The team at Evolve now includes a dedicated Dental Monitoring Concierge who can provide assistance with setting up the app and as a direct contact to communicate and address any concerns in between visits. Along with Dr John Brabant and the oral health therapists, the dental monitoring team ensure their patients’ treatment stay on track more accurately than ever before.
SELF-MONITORING: Dental monitoring through a new app means less in person visits but more monitoring.

Ten steps to mindful eating 1. ALWAYS sit down at the table to eat your meals and snacks. Studies have shown that standing while eating can cause you to eat faster than you would if you were to sit down at a table to enjoy your meal. Slowing down the speed in which we eat helps us to feel fuller on smaller amounts of food. 2. Eat in a distraction-free environment. This means no TV and no phones - research shows that this leads to overeating. When you pay attention to what you are eating, you are less likely to eat more later on. 3. Chew your food slowly and thorough(5ŀ !*&+5 0$! Ɲ 2+1./ŀ /!*/ 0%+*/ * 0!4ő tures. 4. Take note of hunger as it appears and respond appropriately. If you feel hungry soon after a meal, ask yourself if it’s appropriate - did you eat enough? Are you hydrated? It is also important to respond to true hunger when you become aware of it - skipping meals or going hours without eating in an attempt to eat less can often have the ŧųųŧźʼnƁĵ͂ĝǥ͂ĵīƁ˳ 5. Take note of cravings as they appear; what are you thinking and feeling? Cravings can be either physiological or psychological. Physiological cravings can occur from a drop in blood sugar levels and fatigue causing you to crave sugar or carbs - by choosing Keto meals and snacks with more healthy fats and proteins, you can avoid this drop.
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT DENIAL: A few simple changes to the way you think can ensure you eat healthily more often.
Psychological cravings occur when we are feeling stressed, anxious, sad or overwhelmed, and can lead to us believing that certain foods (like chocolate, cookies or chips) help us to ‘feel better.’ 6. Swap “I can’t have that” to “I don’t want that.”
As soon as someone tells us we can’t have something or we tell ourselves that certain ŀŧŧıź͂ĝŶĵ͂ŧǥ͂͂řʼnşʼnƁźˮ͂ƚĵ͂ƚĝŠƁ͂ʼnƁ͂ĵƙĵŠ͂şŧŶĵ˳͂ Change your mentality and notice how much easier it becomes to remain in control. 7. Keep a food journal to bring more awareness to your eating habits.
It is very easy to forget how often throughout the day we quickly grab something and eat it. Studies show that people naturally eat less (without trying) when keeping a food journal. 8. Honour your cravings - sometimes we just want what we want. Denying our cravings and being too harsh or rigid in an attempt to reach our goal marginally faster is not always worth the torment. If you are craving something special then enjoy it then get on with it like nothing happened. Allowing yourself to feel like you have “ruined it” or “failed” will lead to destructive behaviours and self-sabotage. 9. Learn to let it go - guilt, shame, frustration and failure are not emotions we should feel after eating. Diet culture has taught us to feel guilt or shame for enjoying the things that we do. We’ve been taught that we must feel hungry to lose weight and must deny ourselves of everything that we love. The truth is we can learn to enjoy them mindfully. 10. Eat from a smaller plate. The average sized dinner plate has increased by three centimetres since the 1950’s and as a result, our portion sizes have increased and we’re now consuming more calories than ever. A simple solution is to simply eat from a smaller plate. For information on the Ultra Lite Weight loss program call the Wangaratta Wellness Centre on (03) 5798 3344.
