Watch out for sunburn this summer AS we head into the summer season, it‘s a timely reminder to protect our skin as we get out and enjoy the sunshine and freedom of being reunited with friends and family. Sunburn is a radiation burn to the skin caused by exposure to UV radiation. Each time you expose your skin to UV radiation, you increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Symptoms of sunburn include: Changes in skin colour, ranging from pink to red and even purple; Skin that feels hot to the touch; Pain and/or itching; Swelling; #řƅʼnı̗ǰ͂řřĵı͂ ĪřʼnźƁĵŶź͂ ƁņĝƁ͂ şĝƠ͂ ʼnƁīņ͂ and eventually pop or break; and Broken blisters that peel to reveal even more tender skin beneath. The signs of sunburn can start to appear in as little as 11 minutes and skin can turn red within two to six hours of being burnt, and continue to develop for the next 24 to 72 hours. Depending on the severity, sunburn can take days or weeks to heal. There is no cure for sunburn except time and patience but treatment can help manage the symptoms while the body heals. Drink plenty of water, because spending time in the sun can lead to dehydration as well as sunburn; Gently apply cool or cold compresses, or bathe the area in cool water; Avoid using soap as this may irritate your skin; Choose spray–on solutions to help
soothe sunburn rather than creams which require rubbing in by hand; Don‘t pop blisters – consider covering itchy blisters with a wound dressing to reduce the risk of infection; If your skin is not too painful, apply moisturiser to help boost the moisture content of the skin beneath. Do not apply butter to sunburnt skin; Keep out of the sun until your skin has completely healed. See a doctor or seek treatment from the nearest hospital emergency department if you experience severe sunburn with extensive blistering and pain, sunburn over a large area of skin, headache, nausea and vomiting, fever, dizziness or an altered state of consciousness. To prevent the risk of sunburn and skin damage, use a combination of ǰ͂ƙĵ͂ źƅŠ͂ ųŶŧƁĵīƁʼnŧŠ͂ şĵĝźƅŶĵź͂ ĵĝīņ͂ day when the UV levels are forecast to reach 3 or higher. Here are a few tips to protect your skin this summer and beyond: Slip on sun–protective clothing (make sure it covers as much skin as possible); Slop on SPF (sun protection factor) 30 or higher broad–spectrum, water– resistant sunscreen. Apply 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours; Slap on a broad–brimmed hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears; Seek shade; and Slide on wrap–around sunglasses (make sure they meet Australian PROTECT YOURSELF: To prevent the risk of sunburn and skin damage, use a combination of sun protection measures. Standard AS/NZS 1067).

Orthodontist vs Dentist: what’s the difference?
HAVE you decided now’s the time you’d like to straighten your teeth and achieve the beautiful smile you’ve always dreamed of? Then you’ve come to the right place because at Evolve Orthodontics, their specialist team do exactly that. The expertly trained team guided by their specialist orthodontist are committed to providing the best orthodontic treatment experience in the region. After all, you want to be in the best hands. This explains why it’s important you see both an orthodontist and your dentist if you want beautiful, healthy straight teeth. What is orthodontics? Firstly, it’s important to understand what orthodontics is. Orthodontics is a specialised area of dentistry that involves the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment in the alignment of teeth,
jaws, and facial structure. Orthodontists look at more than just the health of your teeth; they řŧŧŗ͂ ĝƁ͂ ƠŧƅŶ͂ ŧƙĵŶĝřř͂ ŀĝīʼnĝř͂ ųŶŧǰ͂řĵ͂ and try to achieve that alignment of your teeth and jaws for optimal oral health. What is an orthodontist? An orthodontist clearly works in Ɓņĵ͂ǰ͂ĵřı͂ŧŀ͂ŧŶƁņŧıŧŠƁʼnīźˮ͂ĪƅƁ͂ƚņĝƁ͂ exactly do they do? Well, they set out to correct any problems you have with your teeth, whether it be crooked teeth, large spaces or gaps between your teeth, canine teeth protruding through your gums or missing teeth. bņĵƠ͂ ĝŶĵ͂ ĝřźŧ͂ ŵƅĝřʼnǰ͂ĵı͂ Ɓŧ͂ īŧŶ̘ rect any problems associated with your bite, known as a malocclusion. An orthodontist has a good understanding of the makeup of your teeth and will be able to assess what condition your teeth are in because they have started out their career in dentistry. However, as an orthodontist, they go beyond checking teeth

Music with a healthy mission
THE Project 365 initiative has pulled together 15 locals with varying degrees of musical performance and administration experience to create the band ‘U Can Cry’ to raise awareness of mental health issues in the community, and spread the message that ‘it’s okay to not be okay’. The group is working towards a stage production scheduled for the weekend of May 7 next year (a year źʼnŠīĵ͂Ɓņĵ͂ǰ͂ŶźƁ͂şĵĵƁʼnŠŁ̘͂͂ņĵŠīĵ͂Ɓņĵ͂ name Project 365) at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre. Proceeds from ticket sales and fundraising around the event will be donated to the Into Our Hands Community Foundation, which invests in projects and initiatives aimed at building North East communities. Project 365 is aiming to raise $20,000 for the foundation. Initially the idea was to hold one performance, however the band is now looking to present two shows to raise even more funds. Local OAK FM radio identity and psychologist Neil Barassi has agreed to be the MC for the show/s and Project 365 hope the performance/s will be a huge community gathering over the weekend to highlight the illness and start important conversations in the community about mental health and wellbeing. Though he’s reluctant to take the spotlight from his bandmates, Wangaratta resident and music lover Peter Rourke was the instigator of the project, which emerged from his own battle with depression. Struggling through a particularly low day last year, Pete was visited by good mates including Rob Humphreys, who suggested he take a break from work to focus on his mental health. ƅŶʼnŠŁ͂ƁņĝƁ͂Ɓʼnşĵ͂ŧǥ͂ˮ͂ƚņʼnřĵ͂řƠʼnŠŁ͂ awake one night, Pete felt he needed to do something to help himself and others battling the ‘black dog’. “I love music, and this idea start-
