Stay fit and healthy while enjoying all the summertime activities SUMMERTIME means longer days, sunshine, picnics and barbecues. Here’s how to make the most of your summer and stay healthy, too. Be active, cool and safe in the sun Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle in every season. The warm summer weather can make it easy to exercise outdoors and get the whole family involved. Just be sure to take some precautions so you don’t get overheated. Exercise in the morning or evening, when it’s likely to be cooler outdoors. If possible, exercise in shady areas. If it’s too hot to go outside, work out at the gym, walk laps or climb stairs inside an air-conditioned building. Drink plenty of water. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Help your body sweat and cool down by drinking water frequently. Take children and older folk to the park, turn on some music and dance, or
get pedometers for everyone in the family and have a friendly competition to see who can log the most steps each day. Plan an active vacation. Camping, hiking, canoeing and kayaking are great ways to spend time in nature and get a lot of exercise. If you’re visiting a city, consider renting bicycles or taking a walking tour. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. When you are out in the sun, wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99 per cent of UV light. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Put more on at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm, when UV rays are strongest.
FRESH FOOD: Summer is a great time for picnics and barbecues out in the open air.
Eat right. Refreshing salads, melons, and berries add čŧřŧƅŜ͂Ä?ŠĹ͂ǹ͂Ä?Ć™Ĺ§Ć…ĹśÍ‚Ć Ĺ§Í‚ĹłĹ‰ÄŤĹ Ĺ‰ÄŤĹşÍ‚ and outdoor meals. But because warmer temperatures can easily spoil food, you’ll
need to be extra careful. Wash hands, utensils, containers and work surfaces before handling food to prevent harmful bacteria from spreading.
Cook food the same day as the picnic, not in advance. Wash fruit and vegetables before cutting. Keep mayonnaise-based foods and other cold foods

Good communication at Christmas CHRISTMAS is a great time for family and friends to gather together, as it is a time we get to catch up with people we have not seen recently. It is important that everyone be included in these activities, even if they have a hearing loss. Diana Bienvenu, from Wangaratta Audiology provides some tips for what we can do to improve communication with our loved ones who have a hearing loss. “Firstly, ensure they are ready to get the message and watching the speaker. All of us get absorbed in our own thoughts from time to time. If we are not listening, we will not get the message,” Diana said. “Speak clearly and at a comfortable listening level. Hearing aids which are correctly set will amplify voices to the right level for that person and your face will look more natural than if you are shouting. Also, please keep in mind it is helpful to speak a normal pace, not too fast or slow. “It can be much harder to have a meaningful conversation during a noisy time when everyone is together. Reducing the level of back-
ground noise will assist anyone with a hearing loss to hear better. Also, it may be helpful to plan ahead to arrange some one-on-one time to catch up with someone you see infrequently. ̢Hǥ͂ĵŶ͂ ĝźźʼnźƁĝŠīĵ͂ Ɓŧ͂ ųĵŧ̘ ple who wear hearing aids, if they need it, to plan ahead for the holidays. This includes ensuring hearing aids are working well and having an adequate supply of batteries. Weight-loss surgery a practical option THERE is a solution locally for people struggling with obesity according to Dr Adam Cichowitz from North Eastern Surgery in Wangaratta. “Bariatric (weight loss) surgery is the only treatment ųŶŧƙĵŠ͂ Ɓŧ͂ ŶĵźƅřƁ͂ ʼnŠ͂ źʼnŁŠʼnǰcant and sustained weight loss in people with obesity,” Dr Cichowitz said. “The most common procedure is a sleeve gastrectomy which is a keyhole operation to reduce the size of the stomach. “This leads to a reduced appetite and smaller meal sizes. It is now one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in Australia.” Obese people have a reduced life expectancy due to diseases that are caused or worsened by obesity. Most people do not realise that morbid obesity is associated with the same reduction in life expectancy as that seen in lifelong heavy smokers or about 13 years. Obesity is also strongly associated with certain types of cancer such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and oesophageal cancer. “Surgery for obesity leads

to dramatic improvements in health and longevity,” Dr Cichowitz said. “Bariatric surgery improves, or even cures, obesityrelated medical conditions in the majority of patients.” Obesity related medical conditions include high blood pressure, obstructive
sleep apnoea, asthma and other obesity-related breathing disorders, arthritis, chronic back pain, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, venous stasis and urinary stress incontinence. “Most people with obstructive sleep apnoea are able to stop using a CPAP
machine at night following surgery,” he said. “Surgery also leads to improvement and remission of Type II diabetes mellitus, and reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. “Obesity also impairs fertility and bariatric surgery
improves fertility. “Surgical weight-loss has also been shown to improve overall quality of life in physical functions such as mobility, self-esteem, work, social interactions, and sexual function. “Singlehood and loneliŠĵźź͂ ĝŶĵ͂ źʼnŁŠʼnǰīĝŠƁřƠ͂ Ŷĵ-
