The scent of autumn is in the wind CRISP mornings followed by sunny days with a gentle breeze blowing announce the arrival of autumn. So do all those fallen leaves and the sniffle you feel coming on. As we move into another season, it’s time to check in with our health and do what we can now to ensure we stay as healthy as possible during winter. For many of us, 2020 meant spending lots of time at home, snuggled up in blankets with hot cups of tea or coffee, juggling working from home alongside home schooling or toddlers we could only take outside for a finite amount of time each day. The upside of seeing fewer people meant that cold and flu symptoms were not passed around in workplaces and by extension, to the home front. While we have returned to some semblance of normality and gone back to our offices and schools and daycare centres, it’s time to remember all those things we did two years ago before COVID and unprecedented were the catchphrases heard in every conversation. Local clinics have begun administering not only COVID vaccines to those in high risk tiers, but annual flu shots and it’s a good idea to organise yours now along with an annual check up if you’re overdue. In addition to visiting the doctor, don’t forget to keep up with any exercise program you’ve started and find ways to incorporate it into your day if you’re finding it hard to get out in those cold mornings or evenings. Healthy eating, meditation and mindfulness, specialist counselling and taking time to relax alone or with friends is also important so make sure you reach out and take time out when you need it.
HAPPY AND HEALTHY: A new season is another chance to check in with your health.
Spiritual counselling and healing QUALIFIED Homeopath, Lily Kennedy, offers her clients a natural and effective way of dealing with their health issues without the side effects created by pharmaceutical medicines. “Homeopathy is a 200 year old scientific system of natural medicine that is non-toxic, side effect free and stimulates the body to heal itself, which strengthens the immune system at the same time,” Lily explained. “This makes it particularly good for pregnant women and infants and children.” In addition to homeopathy, Lily also offers Hahnemann healing and spiritual counselling which compliments her homeopathic treatments. “Hahnemann healing is a form of specialised emotional healing developed by Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy,” Lily said. “The basis is that approximately 60 per cent of all physical illness is caused by unresolved emotional issues.” “Through the healing sessions, these emotional blockages are brought to the sur-
face and the client can then be assisted to work through these emotions using Spiritual counselling as well as homeopathic treatment.” Lily has always had an interest in natural healthcare and a fascination with the universe and energy and some sort of ‘bigger picture’ and from this she found her calling with homeopathy, healing and counselling. “My main focus is helping people to sort their emotional and physical health issues depending on what is needed for that client, and I work with them for as long or as short as necessary to get them to a place where they can positively move forward with their life and most importantly feel in control of themselves and their health. A culmination of events led Lily to start her business in Mansfield, however, she has now joined Allison and the team at AcuHerb in Wangaratta and is available on alternate Saturdays by appointment. To make a time to visit Lily or for more information, call 0409 381 128 or visit her website at www.resonatehomeopathy.com.au.

Uniting Wangaratta office to re-open
TWO of the best ways to stay mentally healthy is to be active and catch up with your mates. All too often retired sportsmen give up on both when they stop playing their preferred sport. Generally speaking we all find it more difficult as we get older to make strong new friendships like those you may have had back in your playing days. For retired footballers there is a real option right here in North East Victoria; the Samaria Suns over 35s football club based in Benalla. The Suns welcome players from across the North East region including Wangaratta and district and they are in need of some extra bodies for the current season. The club competes in the Vic Country AFL Masters against teams including Wodonga and Shepparton. The philosophy for masters football is it is not how many games you win, but how many games you play. For this reason, the rules have been modified in order to minimise the risk of injury and keep players enjoying our great game longer. Wes Stafford from Samaria Suns said the club was keen for men to try out and renew their passion for the game and enjoy the mateship of a team environment.
“The motto of the game is Football for Fun so teams don’t play for points, have a ladder or finals,” Wes said. “It’s more about reconnecting with others around your age with a love of footy. “It’s very family orientated, it’s not just the players involved, so are the wives and partners and kids. “Host clubs put on the afternoon tea or barbecue afterwards, it’s not to be taken too seriously.” The club trains Wednesday nights at 6pm at the Benalla showgrounds and alternate Fridays when there isn’t a match. “We normally fill 18 a side but sometimes you may cut that back depending on who turns up,” he said. If one team is short the opposition will usually help out with a few of their players. Quarters normally go for 20 minutes but can be shortened if need be. “I’d been around footy all my life so I wanted to stay involved,” Wes said. “This is a nice and easy way to do that; it’s just about being around blokes your age and having some fun.” The club needs an extra “six or seven blokes” for this season, anyone interested in learning more can contact Wes on 0400 844 646. The club’s next game is on May 1 at Wodonga.
HOME Care Packages case managers are excited that the Uniting Wangaratta office is re-opening to clients on Monday April 26. Over the past 12 months, Uniting has monitored the COVID situation and followed the government health advice. It has been a very challenging time for the teams at Uniting and for the people they support, needing to be more innovative in their approach with how they can support and interact with each other. “Case managers are enjoying seeing their clients again, feeling connected and having a greater understanding of their clients’ needs,” Jennie Holdom, manager Community Aged Care Goulburn Murray for Uniting said. “There is a real sense of appreciation and excitement about meeting up with their clients after so long.” Marie, a Uniting Home Care Package client, commented about the first visit from her case manager since COVID. “It was lovely to see Cindy again, it’s always a pleasure, and it is so good to have her back visiting as I cannot do without her.” Another client, Maria, told her case manager Sue that she was very happy to see her face to face after such a long time. “I can trust you for the support I need. “For a long time I didn’t see anyone and you were very kind, I thank you for what you are doing for me.” To coincide with the re-opening, Uniting

New Wangaratta receptionist Natasha is keen to learn about the services and the community Uniting supports and will be the friendly face to greet clients when they arrive. A guide to management of tinnitus TINNITUS refers to any sound you hear in your head or ears with no external source. While tinnitus is often described as ‘ringing’, it can also sound like buzzing, cicadas or static. It can come and go and vary in loudness. Tinnitus is very common, with some studies suggesting that approximately 80 per cent of adults may experience tinnitus at some stage in their lifetime. It’s important to know that tinnitus is not a disease and not doing damage to your ears. While the origin of tinnitus is not always clear, there are several biological and lifestyle factors which may contribute to tinnitus such as: hearing, mental wellbeing, physical health, medications and other medical conditions. There is no instant cure for tinnitus, however management strategies such as sound therapy, mindfulness and activity and muscle relaxation have been proven to be very helpful. Sound therapy is one of the simplest ways to distract your brain from focusing on your tinnitus. For some people, their tinnitus is loudest when everything is quiet, like when you’re trying to go to sleep at night. Playing soft sounds in the background such as a fan, radio or nature sounds can have therapeutic effects. Mindfulness and meditation can also improve your emotional wellbeing and can reduce the effects of tinnitus on your daily life. You may notice it more on days when you feel very anxious, stressed or depressed so keeping yourself busy or active can be helpful and will also help to improve your

Dental monitoring has arrived here THE year 2020 changed the way Evolve Orthodontics looked at providing the best treatment and experience for their clients. During the course of last year they introduced a number of new systems to overcome the difficulties that arose due to the restrictions in place. They found that these new ways to provide expert treatment have enhanced their patient experience and their clinic has leapt into the new age of orthodontics with the introduction of dental monitoring. The world’s first dynamic Orthodontic Treatment Tracking System not only helped the orthodontists and patients communicate during the restrictions and lockdowns, but also enabled the specialists to remotely monitor patients’ orthodontic treatment. Dental monitoring is a cloud-based program that allows specialists to monitor and structure their patients’ treatment progress using a free, downloadable app on their smart phone. With dental monitoring, patients take and upload a set of basic images using the self-explanatory app. This incredible tracking system means that treatment is shaped by personal biology and compliance rather than a standard timeframe. The process, which only takes a few minutes each week, yields high quality videos or photographs that the doctors at Evolve can view and use to assess treatment progress remotely. These visual images further allow specialists to determine whether patients are being compliant, if their oral hygiene needs improvement, or if something happens to be broken and needs replacing. This exciting new technology allows close

monitoring of treatment progress and as a result, patients need to be seen less often, while being monitored more often. The team at Evolve now includes a dedi-
cated Dental Monitoring Concierge who can provide assistance with setting up the app and as a direct contact to communicate and address any concerns in between visits.
Along with Dr John Brabant and the Oral Health Therapists, the dental monitoring team ensure their patients’ treatment stays on track more accurately than ever before.

SUPER POWERS: Immune boosting foods will help your body fight infection and illness.
BUILDING a strong immune system, weight loss and general health and wellbeing starts with the type of food we put in our mouths. Whether you suffer from headaches, gut problems, skin problems or stress, these ailments can be impacted by food. sure your body will burn fat. The program is supported by four sachet supplements (these are not meal replacements), combining vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. Available in seven different flavours, these can be taken in between meals as a snack and will assist in stabilising blood sugar levels, reducing those nasty cravings. Scientifically proven as a weight loss program, Ultra-Lite works on the principle of ketosis - shifting the body’s metabolism away
from ‘fat storage’ towards ‘fat burning’ by restricting dietary carbohydrates. When fat is utilised for energy production, ketosis is mildly induced which is usually reflected in increased energy, better appetite control and efficient fat loss. If you suffer with allergies, such as hay fever and asthma or skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis, North East Naturopathic Group also has a variety of non-invasive and chemical-free solutions so call today to make an appointment.
