Focusing on opportunities for businesses to prosper
T
LONGEVITY: Norm Thompson, seen here holding a picture taken in the early days of his career, has practised law for over 50 years.
HE Co-Store development is due to open in 2014. This is a major coup for Wangaratta, the store opening will bring with it full time employment opportunities and greater exposure to a regional retail catchment area. The presence of Target in a regional city not only acts as a magnet to shoppers in our retail catchment, but also effectively increases the geographical boundaries of the catchment area. This delivers more consumers to Wangaratta; for shopping, medical appointments, recreation and often stopping at a café to sample some of the fine refreshments available in our city. This year, through the Council Plan and the budget process, council has nominated a number of activities to support the retail and small business sector; ensure that existing businesses are supported; and appropriate businesses are attracted to Wangaratta. Firstly, the economic development and tourism unit are refreshing a component of the 2008 retail audit. So far, we have commenced a count of vacancies in the retail area. It is beneficial to have a clear understanding of our vacancy rates and to be able to compare these every six months, as a way of monitoring the health of the retail sector. We will integrate this to an attraction strategy – by categorising the types of existing businesses and actively targeting others which do not already have a presence here. Council have also requested that we take an active role in ensuring that businesses have access to the skills and development opportunities needed to ensure prosperity for the future. We are currently surveying local businesses to establish the type of workshops or seminars needed and will deliver against this. The economy is experiencing some difficult times. We know from discussions with small businesses that this is not an easy period, however, we feel confident that the delivery of these projects and activities can help businesses survive and prosper.

Norm recognised for half a century of law BY LEAH TINDILL
W
HEN Norm Thompson embarked on his career as a lawyer, he never imagined he’d still be practising over 50 years later. Starting out in Melbourne in 1962 after graduating Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Laws, Norm moved with his family to Wangaratta in 1968 with the offer of a partnership at Stewart and Constable which transpired in 1970. He continued to work for various forms of the firm as it transformed over the years until 2005 when he started his own firm in Murphy Street, offering more general law services. And Norm has seen many changes to Wangaratta and the business
world in his 50 year journey. “Just changes in the legislation… you probably wouldn’t have thought they would happen but you have to move with the times,” he said. “I remember when the business world became computerised they told us we’d have half the paper requirements and half the staff requirements – well, of course, that didn’t happen.” He said Wangaratta had changed significantly in size since his arrival in 1968. “The extension of the town in the sense that there are all these subdivisions going on from when we first came up here, that’s a change,” he said. “All around town there’s extensions going on and I wonder were all the people are coming from.
Nominations close tomorrow
for the 2013 Wangaratta Business Awards for Excellence.
“I live about six kilometres out of town and when we moved out there, there were two “properties”, if you like, and now there are probably 25 or more.” Outside of his profession and raising four children, Norm contributed to the wider Wangaratta community. “I was a Scout leader for about eight years with Third Wangaratta as they were called then (over 20 years ago),” he said. “The parents of Third Wangaratta; we built the new Scout hall at the back of the Barr Reserve.” In addition, Norm played cricket with the Magpies Cricket Club, served as president of the Rotary Club of Appin Park, president of the Hospital Committee and as secretary of the Wangaratta Golf Club

Waldara for eight years. “I felt like I should contribute a bit,” he said. And while Mr Thompson never set out to spend 50 years in the profession he still enjoys his work as much as ever. “It wasn’t the plan, it wasn’t a goal at that stage it just sort of rolled along,” he said. “I find it rewarding in that you do help people with their problems - I’m old fashioned and I still like helping people with their problems - you meet all sorts of people. His 50 years of service were recognised by the Law Institute of Victoria with a dinner in Melbourne last December. “Even though it’s been over 50 years, you still get surprises when something new crops up,” he said. Hey Joe, I just wanted to say how impressed I was with your team’s service at Landmark Harcourts. I recently purchased in Grossman Drive and dealt with Paul Reid who was first class from start to finish. Very professional service, well organised and executed and just wanted to pass on my thankyous to yourself and particularly Paul. Will definitely refer anyone in my position to your team. Cheers, Rob
