Cattleman’s Railjam returns BURTON Snowboards is pleased to announce the return of Australia’s premier rail event, the Burton Cattleman’s Railjam, happening in a brand new online format from Saturday, July 17 to Sunday August 1. After a hiatus in 2020, the country’s longest running snowboarding event will return as a web-based contest, with $16,000 worth of cash prizes up for grabs and for the first time since its inception, equal prize money for men and women. In its 15th instalment, this year’s contest will look a little different to years past, but with the same Cattleman’s spirit we’ve come to know and love. For a two-week period, riders will have the opportunity to ride a

Cattleman’s inspired feature in the Mt Buller Park and upload up to 10 tricks to the online Cattleman’s event hub. This year’s contest will take place on a brand-new Cattleman’s inspired park feature, specifically designed and built by the Mt Buller Parks team. The feature draws inspiration from the original stair set in the Mt Buller Village Square and includes multiple hit options including a down rail, down-flat-down and close out rail. The rail feature will be open daily from July 17 to July 31 in the Skyline Park, and the event is open to riders of all abilities and ages for the full twoweek period. “The idea with this new online format is that it offers the chance for snowboarders of all abilities to ride the

feature in their own time, at their own pace without the pressure of a crowd,” Burton Australia and New Zealand marketing and brand manager Paul Colby said. “Tricks will then be scored online by a panel of judges, with a rider’s top five tricks amounting to their overall score.” At the end of the two-week period, the top three men and top three women’s scores will make up the 2021 Cattleman’s Railjam podium and take home a share of $16,000 in prize money, with an additional cash prize for Best Trick (1st place $4000; 2nd place $2000; 3rd place $1000; Best Trick $1000). Burton is proud to partner with Clippero as the official event platform

for the Cattleman’s event. The Clippero hub offers the ability for users to easily upload and submit videos, watch other entries, read rules and view leaderboards - all from your smartphone or desktop. Entry terms and conditions apply. Full rules and details for the event are available at clippero.com/ burtonaustralianz. Burton is also proud to be continuing their partnership with Pirate Life Brewing who will be hosting the official Cattleman’s Après Drinks on August 1 at Smokehouse Mt Buller, where winners will be announced live online. Burton Cattleman’s Railjam partners include Burton Snowboards, Pirate Life, anon, and Mt Buller.

twice each day, five days a week. “We deliver Monday to Friday and then on Saturday to get anyone out of trouble,” Chris said. “We have partnered with Kenny of KG Logistics who has jumped on board and every morning picks up the orders and then returns for the second delivery around 1pm for door-to-door service, anything along the way as well,” Chris said. Popular among the orders are Alpine Butchery’s heat and serve

meals including pies, tarts, curries, parmas and stir fries - just heat and serve or quick to cook. Chris employs a qualified chef who produces all the ‘heat and serve’ dishes including winter warming curried sausages, crumbed sausages, and traditional ham and parsley terrine (Farce Charcuterie) just to name a few, along with pies and one particular favourite, salmon tarts. “It is all going pretty well and

the meat of course is also doing well,” Chris said. “The restaurants take a pile of meat, nearly every order going out there is meat deliveries to the restaurants. “It is all good, so anyone who wants a delivery must order before midday Mondays to Fridays to guarantee delivery the same day.” For orders call Chris or his staff members on 5775 1163 for Alpine Butchery deliveries.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Landslip prevention works on Unnamed Corner on the Mt Buller Road commenced over the summer break.

Safe road to the top of Mt Buller THE Victorian Government has invested $32.8 million state-wide to proactively reduce the risk of landslips on key tourist routes as part of the $124 million Building Works package. Works on Mount Buller and Mount Stirling roads commenced in March 2021 and will pause during winter to minimise impact to resort traffic and recommence at the end of winter 2021. “We’re undertaking important work to reduce the risk of landslips at key locations across our road network, particularly those at higher risk in our alpine regions,” regional director (Hume) Department of Transport Steve Bowmaker said. “Landslip prevention works are under way at several key

sites in the Alpine region. “These works include constructing retaining walls, rebuilding roadside embankments, road reconstruction, drainage improvements and rockfall netting to reduce the risk of landslips and roadside hazards proactively. “Landslips can cause hugely disruptive road closures, severely impacting locals, visitors and industry and these works will go a long way to keeping these critical roads open and safe.” So far, work in the Mount Buller and Mount Stirling area has included more than 30 drainage culvert replacement and repairs, improvements to roadside drains, a minor road realignment and full reconstruction of a road embankment to greatly im-

prove drainage along these roads and to proactively reduce the risk of landslips; one of the main sites was at Unnamed Corner. Landslip prevention works funded under this package will also be undertaken on key roads in North East Victoria, including Mount Buller Road, Mount Stirling Road, Bogong-High Plains Road, Bright-Tawonga Road, and the Great Alpine Road. This project will help ensure vital North East Victorian roads remain safe and reliable for the thousands of people who travel them every year. More information can be found on the Regional Roads Victoria website and interactive map at regionalroads.vic. gov.au or by calling the RRV hotline on 133 778.

All new - all bright - but same perfect service THE all new Altitude Kooroora in the Village Square is the go-to place for all things rental and retail this year at Mt Buller. Buller Ski Lifts manager of retail and rental Wolfgang Platzer said “this stylish store is packed to the brim with brand new skis, boots and boards to rent”. “This season we have moved from the old village complex under Cattleman’s to the new Kooroora building. “It is four times bigger than it was before. “The reason why it is so much bigger is that we expanded the offer what’s on as well. “Before it was only a relatively small retail offer but now we are offering retail, rental and lockers for people who want to leave their equipment overnight.” The benefits of being at Kooroora include being a brand new venue - more exposure - it is right next door to the bus stop where all the people get off - it is exposure and new venue. “These are the main benefits,” Wolfgang said. “People from lodges can leave their equipment here overnight - they don’t have to carry it back to their lodge.

GETTING IT DONE: Clinton Scott and another happy customer.

ALL READY: (From left) Wolfgang with Clinton Scott and Mitch Grimes at the all new Altitude.

“And we also offer a specialised boot fitting service that is run by licensed podiatrists - Orthoski, located within the new Altitude store. “They are specialists, not just boot fitters, and they operate a boot fitting service in

store - it is like a shop-to-shop service.” And the great news is that it costs you no more to rent there than anywhere else. Altitude can provide you with top quality gear from the best brands, to help you make

Staffing has been different this year with some familiar employees still there along with some new staff. “Of course the number of international staff is down due to travel restrictions,” Wolfgang said.

“There is a mix of locals and people from around Australia - but we are lower on internationals than we used to be. “We have a good following of people from Europe and North America, especially coming from ski resorts - we always bring specialised people over but this year it has been more difficult.” People can identify Altitude as the branding has remained the same. Hours of opening are from 8.30am to 6pm each day of the winter season. Find Altitude in the Kooroora development in the Village Square, and in the Mt Buller Chalet Hotel.

PART OF THE BIG TEAM: Eric (top right) as part of the 2016 Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce trip to Japan and China.

INTO THE POWDER: Eric in action on the mountain.

IN 2000 Eric Siewert and his wife Liz decided to do a Victorian holiday road trip. They lived in the far north of Western Australia, based in the Kimberley, and Eric managed the El Questro Wilderness Park, working for the Accor Hotels group. It’s a huge property that back then took in a cattle station and three resorts. Being ‘horsey’ folk, they quickly took a liking to the Mansfield region and decided to purchase some 25 acres in the Merrijig region. Fast forward almost a decade and the El Questro

The SCV is now entering a new development phase. Eric has worked with a vast range of SCV board and committee members over the years, including SCV life member Peter McIntyre. This development phase will see 17 new apartments built, plus 52 undercover car spaces and 32 new self contained hotel rooms. Alpine specialist Peter McIntyre has been the architect, not bad at 93 years young. It’s an exciting time for the club. Local identity Mark

Eric Siewert - Mr Hospitality for our winter wonderland resort was sold. As a result, Eric was offered a transfer within Accor. He had a choice, it was either Paris or Mt Buller. Here on Mt Buller Accor managed the Grand Mercure Hotel (now known as Mt Buller Chalet Hotel and Suites). Within two years Eric had converted the Grand Mercure from a management company into a franchise, under the guidance of Nick Whitby. Soon after Eric left Accor and commenced employment for Buller Ski Lifts as Buller hospitality manager.

That was in 2005. Eric did the role for seven years before cancer took hold. He had a liver transplant and took two years off. At the end of 2015 he successfully overcame the disease and was ready to resume work. There was an opening to join the Ski Club of Victoria as general manager. Andrew Dwyer had just stepped out of the role to join Tourism Victoria. For Eric, it was easy to see the appeal of the Ski Club of Victoria. The club drips in history, tradition and passion.

It is now 97 years old and captures much of the determination and exuberance of the earliest skiers on Mt Buller. Its membership base is engaged and extremely active. It has a wonderful racing program, fantastic food offerings and dynamic bar environment. It is truly a cornerstone of the Mt Buller community. The year 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of this skiing institution and Eric hopes to guide the ‘not-forprofit’ through this milestone, ensuring it is around for another 100 years.

Woodsford, RT Edgar Mt Buller, is managing sales. Eric has been a skier for more than 55 years, having fallen in love with the sport as a kid zipping around Perisher and Thredbo. He was part of the 2016 Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce trip to Japan and China during which time the contingent visited Mt Buller sister resorts of Secret Garden (2022 Winter Olympic venue), Niseko and Madarao. His many years of service to Mt Buller and the surrounding district is warmly appreciated, thanks Eric.

Remember to ‘Shred for Chumpy’ COME July 8 there is the promise of fantastic snow coverage across Mt Buller just in time for the “Shred for Chumpy” event. Mt Buller will remember the snowboarding legend Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin on July 8 with a special event “Shred for Chumpy”. “I was a pro snowboarder too, I filmed video parts and being the same age as Chumpy we connected throughout our careers,”

Chumpy’s friend and business partner Ryan Tiene said. “But we didn’t come close till afterwards when Chumpy became my business partner at Turn & Burn. “Those who remember the skills and thrills of even watching Chumpy in action are invited to take part in this anniversary event - 12 months on from the day he died in a snorkelling accident on the Gold Coast.” Ryan said recently there

Equipment for all levels everything you need! Huge range of 2021 demo skis & boards Ski in, ski out! Mt Buller Village Centre T. 0357 776088 ‘On the mountain since 1962'

had been a great response to the proposed “Shred for Chumpy” day since it went viral on Facebook. “A year on I think the wider community that looked up to Chumpy can really get a chance to say goodbye doing something he loved and was so great at,” Ryan said. “Everyone is welcome on all mountains to join in on the event - the day so far is very loose.” Ryan has invited those who

want to remember Chumpy to meet in the morning where he will have someone say a few words and then it’s just “get out there and go shred, have a good time and enjoy the mountains”. There is no cost for the day other than a snowboarder’s usual expenses for getting on the mountain and lift passes. Further details on a meeting place and how the course will run are to be announced closer to the date - keep watching.

REMEMBERING THE CHAMP: World Champoion Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin will be remembered in a special event 12 months on from his passing.

Multiclass event at Interschools Community at the heart of Mt Buller AFTER a very challenging 2020 snow season, it is with deep enthusiasm that the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships are returning to Mt Buller this year. For the eighth year of these championships a dedicated and inclusive multiclass race will be held on Wednesday, August 25 at Burnt Hut Spur. This race will provide the support necessary for people with a disability, who participate in and love snowsports, to take part with extra assistance. Through generous sponsorship, the multiclass event also provides the athletes with a two-day Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) participation camp, gear hire from Black Mountain Equipment, a multiclass polar fleece vest and a celebratory team dinner function held at the Ski Club of Victoria. This year also marks the third year where Victorian Interschools Multiclass participants will qualify to attend the National Interschools at Mount Buller on Friday, September 10.

FIRED UP: Multiclass participants with Amy Frost at the recent Law Enforcement Torch Run.

This annual event has been possible due to the efforts of a small team of parents and educators, in conjunction with Snow Australia, DWA and Special Olympics Victoria. This sporting activity provides the opportunity for people with an intellectual or physical impairment to demonstrate courage, while competing safety and confidently against their peers in a race environment. Through this event the Multiclass Sports Association (MSA) endeavours to pro-

mote acceptance for all and foster understanding, respect and recognition throughout the wider alpine community. Entries are now open. The MSA is always looking for more participants to join their program and become part of the multiclass event. Do you want to learn more or are you interested in participating? Multiclass Sports Association online, or if you will be up on the mountain on August 25, all are invited to join in cheering on these inspirational competitors as they race.

SINCE 2019, the Mt Buller Village Square has been significantly expanded to become the vibrant heart for the village and provide opportunities for the Mt Buller community to come together and embrace its spirit, character and strength. The importance of a safe, public space for a community devastated by the 2020 bushfires and coronavirus (COVID-19) was recognised in late 2020, when the Mt Buller Ratepayers Association, together with the Mt Buller/Mt Stirling Resort Management Board, secured a Bushfire Recovery

Victoria grant to fund the construction of a permanent shelter in the Village Square. The shelter has been designed to blend seamlessly with its surrounds and provide a functional, robust and complimentary meeting place for the whole community. Construction is complete and the final addition of the stone posts will be installed in the summer. The shelter is a place where the community can gather for events and social events. Day visitors will be sheltered from the elements as they queue for the car

park shuttles during winter, and in summer the shelter doubles as a shaded seating option adjacent to the mountain bike pump track. As people linger for longer, local businesses will also benefit from the increased trade. As a central meeting place, the Mt Buller Village shelter brings people together, helps form friendships as people shelter from the elements, and strengthens the bonds between a diverse mix of people. A community needs a strong heart, and the shelter provides just that.

BRING IT ON: Entertainers on the podium for the opening night of the Moosehead Whisky and Blues Bar entertained to a full house.

APPRECIATIVE: An appreciative large audience packed the new Moosehead Whisky and Blues Bar for opening night.

LAUNCHING the Moosehead Whisky and Blues Bar on June 26, the revamp of the ABOM Moosehead Bar has been in the control of experienced chef and hospitality manager Glen Tobias. The Moosehead re-opened to a new blues theme to a packed house. Glenn is passionate about blues and has done an amazing job on revamping the old Moosehead Bar, the décor is outstanding - giving people the true speakeasy atmosphere and offering an impressive beverage list, featuring ABOM’s favourite: the Mountain Magic Cocktail; whisky from all over the world; and excellent wine from near and far. Before taking on his role at Mt Buller, Glenn was the general manager for the Atlantic group, based in the Docklands, Melbourne. Executive chef, celebrity chef and gourmet farmer, Ross O’Meara, joined Glenn at Buller Hospitality in 2019 and is plating up some outstanding dishes sourcing mainly local produce. Ross had cooked for the likes of Rick Stein, penned books and made many television food shows.

Moosehead Whisky and Blues Bar re-launched the right blues atmosphere which the audience loved. Entertainers for opening night were Ben Wicks and Johnny Tesoriero from Blues Roulette joined by Jimi Hocking of The Screaming Jets fame and Sammy Owens of the Sammy Owens Blues Band. The Moosehead Whisky and Blues Bar will offer an old-world speakeasy-meetsblues and fine booze, featuring whisky from all over the world, cocktails, cheese, charcuterie, and who can (or will) forget, world-class blues tunes; and bar food served to your table, all to the soundtrack of great blues music. school children to the sport of Cross Country Skiing. Over many years Mt Buller has provided a wonderful venue for this competition, and many of the sport’s elite

athletes have risen through the various Interschools Age Divisions and gone on to represent Australia at World Cups, World Championships, and also the Olympics.

Karbon jacket recycle program JACKET sustainability was a major part of the Mount Buller Race Club’s (MBRC) current uniform sponsorship program which has now been locked in for the next four years. MBRC have teamed up with Worn Up and Karbon to offer a sustainable way to dispose of used jackets. Sporting textiles are one of the least items to be resold as they are specific due to the use of sponsorship logos and Worn Up’s Textile Reuse Program captures textile waste before it gets to landfill. On Sunday, July 18 between 2pm and 4pm, all Mt Buller families will be able to drop in old Karbon jackets that have the MBRC, TBR or Squad logos on them to the Mt Buller clubhouse and they will then be shipped to Sydney to start their new cycle. Worn Up then de-trim, clean and dismantle the jackets. The textile material is

shredded and starts to process to become new products. Ed Fortey, Karbon, has generously offered to support this program which will cover some of the costs of freight and processing, all they ask from you is a gold coin donation. The benefits for contributing to this program are: z prevents jackets from going to landfill and repurposes them into new products; z work with Worn Up to provide an educational experience for our athletes and build awareness of circular textile solutions; z become the role model for Circularity on the Mountain and potentially roll out the program to other mountains and sporting clubs; and z Worn Up can divert the recovered raw material into a ‘reformed’ product for Mt Buller Race Club to demonstrate circularity.

Dedication of ‘Chumpy’s Lodge’ at Mt Buller AUSTRALIA’S winter sport community has come together to honour the legend of three-time Winter Olympian Alex “Chumpy” Pullin with the athlete accommodation at the Olympic Training Centre at Mt Buller named “Chumpy’s Lodge”. Chumpy’s parents Sally and Chris Pullin together with partner Ellidy Vlug were present at Mt Buller for the dedication in honour of the snowboard pioneer, Olympic team flagbearer and two-time world champion. Chief executive officer of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) Geoff Lipshut says it’s important that athletes know Chumpy’s story and the contribution he made to snowsport in Australia. “As we approach the first anniversary of Chumpy’s tragic passing, this is fitting recognition,” he said. “All athletes now staying at athlete accommodation at Mt Buller will learn of his story via the memorabilia here and preserve his memory through the reference to Chumpy’s Lodge as a part of each training camp. “Chumpy genuinely believed that anything was possible, which is why he was so important to the athletes of his generation, and through Chumpy’s Lodge, generations to come.”

Chumpy Pullin was born in the Mt Buller area, his parents owned a ski and snowboard shop in the subalpine town of Mansfield. Chumpy learnt to snowboard at Mt Buller at eight years of age and went on to be the first Australian winter sports man or woman to win two World Championships in 2011 and 2013, and a triple Olympian 2010, 2014 and 2018. At the Games in 2014 and 2018 he placed sixth in the Olympic final. Chumpy is the most successful skier or snowboarder to grow up in the Mt Buller area. Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) vice president and past chef de mission of the winter team at Vancouver (2010), Sochi (2014) and PyeongChang (2018) Ian Chesterman said Chumpy Pullin’s passion left an indelible mark on winter sport in Australia. “Chumpy was a natural leader, which is why he carried the flag for Australia at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi 2014,” Mr Chesterman said. “He was passionate about building winter sport in this country, which is why this OWIA initiative is so important. “We were desperately sad to lose him but his legacy will live on. “Everyone who passes through the doors of Chumpy’s Lodge will understand that history.”

ALEX “Chumpy” Pullin will be remembered for generations through his child which is due to be born in October to girlfriend Ellidy Vlug. Ellidy is pregnant with Chumpy’s baby, thanks to IVF. In the months leading up to his death, Alex and Ellidy, had been trying for a baby. (The 32-year-old died in a freak diving accident in July last year.) Following Chumpy’s sudden death on July 8, a quickthinking medical team retrieved his sperm and this year they helped Ellidy successfully conceive through IVF. “In the weeks after (his death) I had hoped to God that I was pregnant,” Ellidy explained in her Darling Shine podcast which aired on Monday, June 28. “I just prayed for this little miracle. “Everyone knew we were trying so hard for a baby and had been trying for ages and were starting to talk about IVF.” In the podcast, Ellidy revealed that unfortunately she was not pregnant, but thankfully she was still able to make their dream a reality via the process of sperm retrieval and the IVF program. “The legislation is in Queensland, you can actually retrieve sperm from a deceased person’s body,” she said. Ellidy first announced the happy pregnancy news on her Instagram to her 54,000 followers. “Bubba Chump coming this October💫Your Dad and I have been dreaming of you for years little one,” she wrote. “I am honoured to finally welcome a piece of the phenomenon that is Chumpy back into this world.” Chumpy was Australia’s first snowboard world champion and a three-time Olympian.
