Another big success ALTHOUGH the golf course portion of the day got a little wet, the annual Adams Ski and Golf Day got off to a cracker start last Friday up at Mt Buller. The fundraising event first commenced in 1999 to raise money towards Mansfield schools’ Snowsports programs and has now raised upwards of $300,000. This year there was 64 competitors and 16 teams in the event and the final amount raised for the day was $30,500. The $30k+ is for local school Snowsports programs that will enable many children to participate in snow sports for the very first time.

It all kicked off with a competitors’ dinner at the ABOM Moosehead with 50 attendees, and the always enjoyable RT Edgar Calcutta fundraiser. The winning team was Team Rossignol, consisting of Rob Fuleky, Campbell Sallabank, Dave Speirs and Andrew Charlton, with Sultans of Swing coming in second and Buller Central third. Bluebird Days came last on the golf course. Other winners included Guy Thompson as the fastest individual and Matt Daly hit the longest drive. “Adams Estate Agents wish to thank Buller Ski Lifts and

especially general manager Laurie Blampied’s tireless support for the last 20 years to successfully organise this great and somewhat unique event where all proceeds go to the local Mansfield schools to support their skiing programs back at Mt Buller,” said Mark Adams, managing director of Adams Estate Agents. “It was a great day, everybody loved it, and there’s a lot of newcomers who are keen to return next year. “Adams Estate Agents have plans to continue to be the naming and major sponsor for many years to come.”

THE CHAMPS: It was all smiles for this year’s Adams Ski and Golf Day winners Team Rossignol, consisting of Rob Fuleky, Campbell Sallabank, Dave Speirs and Andrew Charlton.

Improvements are safety first for pedestrians PEDESTRIAN safety in and around the Mt Buller carparks has been a focus for the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management Board in recent years. Stairs have been installed between the Chalet and Walkers on Buller carparks so that people don’t have to walk around a blind corner on the side of the Mt Buller Road. Stairs near the entrance to Walkers carpark also provide direct access to the Northside Express lift, while concrete bollards along that section of the Mt Buller Road create a safe pedestrian area for anyone who is unable to use the stairs. And yet another set of stairs has been installed so that people parking in the CSIR carparks can access the Celia’s snowplay park and carpark shuttle stop without having to walk along the roadside.

RMB chief executive officer Mark Bennetts explained that several changes have also been trialled in the Celia’s area over the last two seasons, aimed at improving pedestrian safety in this complex zone. “This is a really tricky area which involves coaches parking and unloading/loading, carpark shuttles heading to and from Horse Hill, cars heading down the Horse Hill ramp on their way home, cars driving to and from Corn Hill Road and the Mt Buller village, pedestrians coming from Corn Hill or CSIR carpark, and people using the snowplay park and Celia’s café,” he said. “And we think we’ve finally got it right.” Concrete bollards have been carefully positioned to create pedestrian only zones including seating, a queuing area for people catching

the free carpark shuttle, and an area for people alighting from the shuttle when they’ve come down from the village. There’s also a defined pedestrian crossing to the bus parking area, lanes allowing the passage of carpark shuttles, and areas for cars parking overnight to pause until they can be led together to the overnight carpark by a member of the RMB parking team. Mr Bennetts said the RMB is looking forward to seeing these improvements at work when the snow and coaches finally start arriving. “We expect this will provide pedestrians and drivers with much safer passage through the area, and a more enjoyable visit to Celia’s and the snowplay park - as long as we all do the right thing by staying within the speed limit and sticking to the defined pedestrian zones,” he said.

A wish come true for Reagan Ross VISITING Mt Buller and skiing for the first time last week as a Starlight Wish for Reagan was the The Ross family, who made the trip down from Queensland. In just two lessons with Roland Kautsky they mastered skiing on Bourke Street. Starlight Wishes help sick kids and their families dream big and leave the pain of treatment behind and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a seriously ill child and their family. From the moment a child is told their Starlight Wish has been granted the excitement begins. Dreaming, planning and talking about the wish is a great distraction from treatment and surgery. It’s the light at the end of the tunnel that lifts spirits and brings families together.

Ann Jaggard - Mt Buller hotelier ANN Jaggard’s family owned and operated 10 shoe retail outlets in the Northern Territory, spread across Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin. Their family accountant was John McDonald and one day he explained that his group had built a new accommodation and restaurant business on Mt Buller. It was called Breathtaker, the year was 1982, and he was seeking a manager to run the business. Ann had visited the Mt Buller resort in 1981 as a guest and stayed in the partially constructed building. She understood the project

By ROB AIVATOGLOU

and decided to take up the challenge. But when Ann arrived in 1982, the building construction had only just been completed. As opening weekend arrived, beds were still being moved into rooms, 120 guests were booked for the opening and 200 people were attending the official launch lunch in the Breathtaker restaurant. The chef was the amazing

Andrew Fielke from Adelaide. It was organised kaos but all came together with lots of hard work by all the staff. In her first Breathtaker life, Ann completed five seasons, before the family shoe business was sold and she moved back to Adelaide in order to allow her kids to complete their schooling in a stable academic environment. In those early days families would return year after year, and many lifelong friendships evolved. In 1993 Ann returned to Mt Buller and ran Breathtaker until 2000. Colin Nash had been running the business in the interim, and

the business had continued to grow. Everything had become computerised and mid-week visitation had grown incrementally. In 2000 Ann accepted a role with the Latrobe University Mt Buller Campus. She headed up student welfare and accommodation and stayed in the role until the university closed the campus in 2006. During this period, Ann also managed Ski Lib Alpine Club and Patscherkofel Lodge. She had met Laurie Harcus. They purchased Pancakes Plus in 2005 and also set up Wok Works circa 2006.

They were both great little businesses that they loved. Opportunity presented in 2013 when the operator of Enzian Hotel went broke. Existing shareholders of the building were given the first option to buy the on-going hotel business. A group headed by Ann and Laurie decided to purchase the business. They took over in April, around the same time Laurie’s health deteriorated and saw him hospitalised for numerous operations. It was an extremely difficult time. Over the last eight years En-

zian has returned to its glory days and thanks to much hard work enjoys excellent occupancy, an amazing restaurant and vibrant bar. Four decades after first arriving at Mt Buller as a guest, Ann is still a passionate skier. Lifelong friendships have been forged through the industry. She credits local identity Mark ‘Woody’ Woodsford with helping her become the skier she is. North America is a favourite snow destination and many fun times have been enjoyed in Whistler Blackcomb with business partners and friends Wendy McGee and Paul Shipley.

Aiming for Olympics SIXTEEN-year-old Boris Stanish already has his sights set on a professional career in cross country skiing, shooting and way into the future coaching in ski related sports. But, for now he is concentrating on refining his skills and being selected to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Boris is currently excelling in his chosen sport field of biathlons which compiles competition in cross country skiing and shooting. The biathlons comprise of up to four components per competition skiing, shooting, skiing again and then shooting to finish. A modest Boris explained the shooting component is a 50 metre target shoot and you have to get five out of five shots or lose penalty points. “You have to practice a lot to be good and get all five targets,” he said. Boris is already competing at world championship level having not long returned from Europe after competing in the World Youth Championships in Austria. “It was super nice, a super good day for my races and I came 44th overall, which was pretty good,” Boris said. “I am getting to where I want to be. “I want to be competing at the World Cup, the Olympics in 2026 - I will have the qualifications.” While travelling the world to compete at the biathlon events, Boris is still finishing his schooling, this year being taught in a home school program while on Mt Buller during winter, but normally would

be attending Albert Park College, Melbourne. While overseas he still has to do his studies which makes for a heavy workload when combined with training and competing. For three months over our summer (2020/21), Boris was in Italy training hard but continued studying all the while. “The camps in Italy are super cool, we stay together a lot and go day in day out; train in the morning, train in the afternoon,” he said. “This year we had only five in the training camp; me, one from New Zealand, one from Bolivia and two from Austria. “We have the most elite coaches who train us and see us as future world champions.” At present (the time of Buller News going to press) Boris will be attending a training camp at Mt Hotham but also trains and competes at Falls Creek and at times Perisher. Boris sets his own training program when home during the off season and ‘for fun’ he runs - the likes of uphill to the top of Buller, Corn Hill Trail (19km) and around the mountains -’just venture out for a bit of fun’. “I usually do these runs on my own but others come with me from time to time,” he said. “I do running for training mostly but I do compete in cross country races where I do a running race because it is fun. “I am very fit as I put in the work. “I like to run uphill for fun and training fitness, even when snow is light I will ski uphill.”

THREE DISCIPLINES: 16-year-old Boris Stanish loves to compete and does so around the world in biathlons (xcountry skiing and shooting) and sometimes in running events - just for the fun of it.

IT takes a long time and a lot of love to produce Sassy Sister Liqueur. But the effort and tender care in making this remarkable product is a labour of love and passion for makers Amanda Furlong and Rob Mitchell of Merton. “We create Sassy Sister at Bilyara Springs, our sustainable farm and craft distillery, nestled in the foothills of Victoria’s pristine Strathbogie Ranges,” said Amanda. “Made using our organically grown berries, and locally sourced spirits, Sassy Sister is distilled and bottled on site at Bilyara Springs. “With Sassy Sister we celebrate and honour generations of strong and independent women.” Directly from the fields, Sassy Sister steeps the

delicious berries in spirit aged for more than 16 years within French and American oak casks. As Sassy Sister’s essence blooms into a rich, warm and mellow spirit, a portion of the alcohol naturally evaporates into the aromatic oak barrels ‘the angels’ share’. To perfectly balance the fruit flavours, Amanda and Rob carefully and meticulously blend in a younger, vibrant spirit, aged in the same way, evolving a smooth, complex palate. The liqueur is then bedded down for up to a further five years, allowing the spirits and fresh fruits to harmonise into Sassy Sister’s signature deep tones and exquisite taste. And this liqueur’s signature exquisite taste can be used to create the most delicious and decadent cocktails: here are a couple of tantalising teasers:

Black Forest Sassy: z 40 mls Sassy Sister Liqueur z 30 mls cherry liqueur z 10 mls creme de cacao z 10 mls Licor 43 Chocolate cream topping: z 25 mls chocolate creme liqueur z 100 mls thickened pouring cream Shake over ice and strain into a port glass. Top with a few spoonfuls of chocolate cream topping and garnish with chocolate shavings and a fresh cherry.

Sassy Down Under: z 45 mls Sassy Sister Liqueur z 10 mls Monin blueberry syrup z 15 mls freshly squeezed lemon juice z 60 mls fresh pineapple juice z half a teaspoon of Vegemite Combine liqueur, syrup and juice in a mixing glass, stir through the Vegemite until diluted then add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a twist of lemon.

Duck Inn for dining delicacies DRAKE’S Restaurant at the Duck Inn has an updated menu of main meals this season, again drawing inspiration from a range of different chefs who’ve brought their own style to the restaurant over the past few years. “Of course we have to have duck on the menu,” said owner Aleks Stanish, “and the duck Maryland remains ever-popular. “We’ve kept some popular dishes and introduced some new, one of the most requested being the 12hour slow cooked lamb. “It’s juicy, pulls apart, and just falls off the bone.” Head chef Nick Stewart returns to Drake’s Restaurant this season, complementing the modern accommodation of the Duck Inn, which Aleks and his wife Karen rebuilt in 2013. A meal in the intimate restaurant wouldn’t be complete without a taste of this season’s new

standout dessert. “The tiramisu has been a big winner. Tiramisu is normally a cake, but these are made individually in a cocktail glass, in a unique Italianinspired style,” said Aleks. The desert came about from a chance meeting Aleks’ son, Boris, had with a two-hat Michelin Chef while completing biathlon training in Livigno, a town in the province of Sondrio, northern Italy. “It has the same flavours people know and love, but is more rich and creamy,” Aleks said. The Duck Inn is open for dinner every evening except Tuesday night and offers a range of matching wines to suit the main courses and desserts on this eclectic menu. Bookings for the restaurant can be made by emailing bookings@ duckinnmtbuller.com or by phone on 5777 6326.

Book launch success at the Delatite Hotel GABRIEL Bergmoser held a home-town launch of his latest book ‘The True Colour of a Little White Lie’ at the Delatite Hotel, on Thursday evening. There was a strong turnout of over 45 people, keen to listen to the author and secure an autographed copy of the novel. “After having to postpone the event due to restrictions, it was great to actually be able to put on the event,” said Gabriel. The story is ostensibly set in Mansfield and on Mt Buller, however, under a fictional guise, and is aimed at the young adult market. “Of all my books, True Colour is the most Mansfield book I’ve ever written, and it’s great to share the book with the local community,” said Gabriel. “It’s about a kid who grows up in a small town and his parents take over a ski lodge at a nearby mountain resort and he gets to re-invent himself.

“I really lifted a lot from my own experience of growing up in Mansfield and going up the mountain regularly during winter to ski, and I’ve taken quite a few of my own embarrassing personal anecdotes and filtered them into the story in a somewhat fictional way.” Gabriel spent the season living on the mountain in 2005, when his parents Kim and Christian took over managing the restaurant and bar at The Whitt. At the time Kim and Christian were also operating the dining room at the Delatite Hotel and their restaurant at The Magnolia (which were both off-mountain) adding to what would become somewhat of a crazy winter. “The season was cut short that year as we had a massive snow storm around the end of August, and some of the roof collapsed at The Whitt - into the restaurant - along with other damage, forcing us to close

early,” said Kim Bergmoser. Gabriel has a wealth of similar experiences and anecdotes to draw upon in his writing, with the most recent novel told through the eyes of a teenage male protagonist. The resulting book due to the personal nature of the tale, came together incredibly smoothly for Gabriel. “It had a charmed life this book from inception to publication which is so incredibly rare, with agents and the production team alike, seeing and loving the book for what it was,” he said. “However, my hope is that local kids will relate quite strongly to the story, and see parallels with their own experiences of town and the mountain.” IN-STORE: With the weather a little on the bleak side, indoor activities are on the cards, with Gabriel’s novels available at Ink Bookshop.

Network takes aim at deer issue CONSERVATIVELY estimated at ‘more than a million’, feral deer populations have become one of the most serious environmental and agricultural threats in Victoria - arguably greater than feral pigs or brumbies, the other major invasive species now rampant in the state’s Alpine regions, according to Eurobin’s Peter Jacobs. Mr Jacobs is the man charged with bringing together community groups, organisations and individuals already combating the deer menace under the newly-formed Victorian Deer Control Community Network. Based in the Alpine Shire, the network has been established to provide a platform for its members to collaborate with government departments and agencies in tackling the growing problem. A 300kg deer can crash down fences and demolish gardens, pastures, crops, vines and orchards, as well as being a danger to motorists when they sprint across rural roads at night. “From a biodiversity perspective one of the biggest concerns is that deer are increasingly getting up into the high country,” Mr Jacobs said. “They used to be confined to the foothills, but are now trampling Alpine peatlands and wallowing in bogs which are very important for the water quality of streams and rivers.” On the fringes of villages like Bright and Harrietville, which border national parks, some residents

BY LAURIE SULLIVAN lsullivan@ nemedia.com.au

have erected large deer-proof fences or are resorting to electric barriers to try to deter the hungry deer roaming the streets at night, while others have given up the fight - and their gardens. Baiting deer is not allowed in Victoria and aerial shooting has only been effective in burnt out areas, where they can be seen, while shooting from ground level is largely ineffective. “Deer are so entrenched in the forest country around here it’s really about protecting assets and trying to push their numbers down,” Mr Jacobs admits. “Eradication is a long way off but there needs to be a concerted effort to help property owners to deal with the impact of deer. “It will need a long-term investment and there are limited options, but something has to be done.” The Victorian Government has allocated $18 million for feral deer control over the next four years, and to develop control plans. President of the Upper Ovens Valley Landcare Group, Mr Jacobs says the group has had to resort to 1.2m high tree guards to protect plantings because the deer decimate them. “We’re now having to put ex-

tension on those guards because the deer are still chewing the tops off them at 1.2m high,” he said. “It adds a lot more cost to the guards but it also means we are going to have to resort to more expensive fencing. “Whatever way you look at it, deer are a big problem and it will take big money to respond to it.” Mr Jacobs recently engaged Charles Sturt University academic Dr Allan Curtis to conduct a survey on the economic impact of deer on properties in the Ovens Valley. “There hasn’t been a decent study into the cost of deer to a local economy let alone the environment,” Mr Jacobs said. “The survey will examine the costs of deer on property owners, whether it’s what they are spending on fencing, crop losses, car damage from collisions - whatever it is.” Along with government departments, disparate groups and individuals have been grappling with the feral deer problem. However, until the advent of the network there has been little opportunity for collaboration and co-ordination of ideas and initiatives, or opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences. “The vision is that a healthy and respectful collaboration of community, interest groups, institutions and government will bring about a substantial reduction in the impact of feral deer on the community, environment and the economy,” Mr Jacobs said.

MT BULLER PROPERTY

Bringing new life to property management on Buller WITH years of experience in real estate and business management, three local Mansfield people have come together to form a new company North East Property Services - corporate body managing. John Neely along with Steve and Tamara Rabie have formed the company believing they can improve management services for corporate body apartment and home owners who need good man-

agement of their homes and apartments - particularly on Mt Buller and in the holiday let area. “After owning an apartment on Buller and then going through the process of selling it again, having to deal with corporate body issues, I saw the need for a more refined and definitive management service,” Steve said. “But we also saw the lack of good communication be-

tween management services and their clients. “In the past I have been let down through lack of communication, so I feel this is a big issue which we will address. “There was an opportunity there in the market, especially on Mt Buller, and we are grabbing it. “We are confident we can give more value to our services - ‘Better Bargaining for your Bucks’, he said.

“John Neely has had many years of experience in Melbourne in management of strata titles, corporate management and real estate but has now moved back ‘home’ for good. “Tamara has also had many years of experience in real estate sales and management and believes she can also contribute a wealth of knowledge to the new company.” John Neely will be the prin-

cipal manager of NE Property Services taking charge of the financial side, while Tamara will take the reins on owner meetings and in particular the AGM with the support of John of course. She will also hold a major role in liaison (communication) with clients - John of course will share this role. Issues to be managed and improved for clients will include insurances (sourcing the

best coverage at best price) and building security (both financially and structurally). “Hopefully we can become a new price setter - and not just a price taker,” Steve said. Steve’s role will be taking charge of maintenance of buildings as he has had experience in large projects having set up, owned and operated a marine services business prior to becoming a full time farmer.
