‘Shred for Chumpy’ at your local mountain SNOWFIELDS, and in particular snowboarders across Victoria, including Mt Buller, will remember the snowboarding legend Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin on July 8 with a special event “Shred for Chumpy”. Snowboarders from Falls Creek, Hotham, Mt Stirling and of course Chumpy’s favourite mountain Buller, will celebrate the man he was and what he loved most - shredding the fresh snow. Friend and business partner, Ryan Tiene said: “I was a pro snowboarder too, I filmed video parts and being the
same age as Chumpy we connected throughout our careers. “But we didn’t come close till afterwards when Chumpy became my business partner at Turn & Burn. “We ran snowboard camps and mental strength camps. “Those who remember the skills and thrills of even watching Chumpy in action are invited to take part in this anniversary event - 12 months on from the day he died in a snorkelling accident on the Gold Coast.” Chumpy Pullin was a world champion and was brought up on Mt Buller
learning to ski and snowboard; taking on snowboarding as a profession, competing in world competitions and bringing home championship cups. Ryan said there has been a great response to the proposed “Shred for Chumpy” day since it went viral on Facebook, especially from a lot of people who were not able to attend Chumpy’s funeral or paddle outs at the beach where he died last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, or were not close enough to Chumpy and maybe felt a bit uncomfortable going. “A year on I think the wider com-
munity that looked up to Chumpy can really get a chance to say goodbye doing something he loved and was so great at,” Ryan said. “Everyone is welcome on all mountains to join in on the event - the day so far is very loose.” Ryan has invited those who want to remember Chumpy to meet in the morning (place to be decided) where he will have someone say a few words and then it’s just ‘get out there and go shred, have a good time and enjoy the mountains’.

Remembrance and snow blessing service postponed Police presence on the mountain MANSFIELD police will again be manning Mt Buller during the winter season with at least two officers on the mountain each day. At peak times a third officer will be in attendance. Officers are accommodated on the mountain so they can be on call at all times.

Delivering to Mt Buller
THE annual remembrance service at the Alpine Chapel on Mt Buller had to be postponed this year due to COVID restrictions. Fr Tony Kerin said he decided to postpone the service because he and Fr Ken Bolden were both ‘stuck in Melbourne’ due to COVID lockdowns and travel restrictions. And the traditional Blessing of the Snow was also postponed until clergy can come out of Melbourne. Fr Kerin was planning to hold the Blessing of the Snow on June 19 or even later, but has had to wait until restrictions were lifted and he could travel again. This year two mountain identities will be remembered at the annual memorial service, when it can be held. The first person is Roger Groombridge, well known for working with the lift companies and for his amazing stone work around the village. Roger passed away about three months ago. Good friend Rudi Renz said Roger started working for Hans Grimus many years ago as a lift operator and then supervisor, a position he held for many years. A permanent resident on the mountain for many years, in the summer Roger did a lot of construction work and was renowned for his retaining walls and stone work. He later worked as a security office for the
Arlberg and Kooroora hotels until about 20 years ago when he moved off the mountain and into Mansfield where again he made many good friends. “He was very popular both on Mt Buller and in Mansfield and had many, many friends,” Rudi said. The second person to be remembered will be Brian (Boots) Harris, an original member of the ABV Lodge and keen skier since the late 1950s. Brian’s son Danny Harris is still working on Buller in snowboard and ski hire through Alpine Retreat and Brian’s granddaughter Lily is also an accomplished Buller snowboarder. Traditionally the first Saturday following the long weekend at Mt Buller is when the community gathers in the Alpine Chapel overlooking the village to remember friends and loved ones who have passed. Watch for news when this service will be held and Fr Kerin will lead the community in prayer, share stories and celebrate those who have been part of the fabric of Buller’s close alpine community. Mt Buller is a small community made up of many big and bold personalities. This annual service is an opportunity to remember so many special people that will be in our thoughts as we ride the mountain this season, even if they are not sharing the chairlift ride in person.

Keeping the homeless warm this winter McGRATH Real Estate agency in Mansfield has got behind the ‘Heat the Homeless’ campaign this year, helping those in need to keep warm. In conjunction with XTM Performance, the McGrath team is asking for donations of preloved ski jackets with donations being collected at their office in Highett Street. XTM’s call out is “We stand by our mission to do good with HEAT THE HOMELESS 2021. Donate today.” Winters are bitterly cold and there are an estimated 116,000+ people of Melbourne and other Victorian centres on the streets sleeping rough. Heat the Homeless appeal urges donations of clean, pre-loved, preferably waterproof, jackets. One rule, if you wouldn’t wear it, please don’t give it. How do I donate? Find a donation point - in this case McGrath’s Mansfield office and look out for the Heat the Homeless signature boxes.
PASS IT ON: Donations of pre-loved warm snow jackets are being sought for the Heat the Homeless appeal this winter.

Staying COVID Safe at resorts THE Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board (RMB) has carefully prepared a COVID Safe plan to minimise the risk of coronavirus transmission. This plan has been based on the Victorian Government Advice for COVIDSafe Management of 2021 Alpine Activities in Victoria. Everyone involved with Mt Buller and Mt Stirling has a role to play in keeping the resorts free of, or limiting the spread of, coronavirus (COVID-19). The RMB is responsible for developing and implementing this overarching COVIDSafe plan and for the RMB’s associated internal COVIDSafe Plan for staff. It is also responsible for monitoring the latest Victorian restriction levels, Restricted Activity Directions, Stay Safe Directions and Workplace Directions issued by the chief health officer (CHO), to remain aware of all current obligations. All Mt Buller and Mt Stirling stakeholders are responsible for developing and implementing their own COVIDSafe plans and monitoring the latest restrictions. Victoria Police is the resort based authority responsible for enforcing compliance with COVID-19 restrictions.
It is essential that government officials can use the resorts’ contact tracing data to identify anyone who has come into contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case. At present there are no overarching capacity restrictions on the number of people who can come to either Mt Buller or Mt Stirling resorts. Resort entry staff must comply with safety screens at the point of service and capture the name and phone number of the driver of any vehicles purchasing their permit at resort entry; record the registration number, date and time of vehicles entering and exiting through resort entry. All mountain visitor transport provided by the RMB is considered to be public transport, which means it is subject to the same requirements that apply to public transport and shuttle services on the mountain and must remind people waiting in queues to maintain physical distancing and permit passengers to use standing room. There are many more aspects to the RMB COVID Safe plan which are available on request. But the message from RMB is - stay safe, play safe and come back for more snow fun.

CFA’s Garry Cook awarded top honours
CHIEF CFA MAN: Garry Cook, well known on Mt Buller and in the CFA District 23 region, has been awarded the Australian Fire Services Medal (AFSM) for services to the emergency services and in particular fire services.
GARRY Cook, who was appointed operations anager of District 23 in mid-1995, helped establish the Mt Buller CFA Brigade and has been awarded the Queen’s Honours’ top service medal. Garry’s 35-year career and dedication to CFA and the broader emergency services and his exceptional strategic leadership has seen him recognised with an Australian Fire Services Medal (AFSM) in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours list on June 14. During Garry’s time in the District 23 role he helped establish the Mount Buller Fire Brigade and led some of the largest multi-agency exercises in the district. He was also heavily involved in the response to the devastating 2002/03 Alpine fires. In 2005 he was appointed to lead the Integrated Fire Management Planning
Project, established to act on recommendations from a report into the Alpine Fires. Garry joined Edi Fire Brigade in North East Victoria in 1981 at the age of 16. He joined CFA’s permanent ranks in 1986 as an assistant regional officer based at headquarters, before moving to the training college as a guest instructor in early 1987. In 1994 he returned to headquarters as a district officer and was part of CFA’s Strategic Planning Group, a new and dynamic team whose role was to shape the future of the organisation. The foundations set by Garry through this project influenced change for the betterment of the community and led to the development of programs such as Safer Together where agencies and the community work closely together to manage fire
risk and community safety. In September 2014 he was appointed as assistant chief officer for the North East region. Garry’s exceptional strategic leadership skills, operational knowledge and commitment to CFA has seen him entrusted with the role of acting chief officer on several occasions, including in 2020 at the beginning of Fire Services Reform - a critical time for CFA and its people. He is currently deputy chief officer specialist services responsible for areas including operational communications, specialist response, structural fire planning, fire investigation, and marine and technical rescue. He also remains active in both state agency commander and state response controller roles.

Bourke Street snow a hit for season opening MT BULLER welcomed skiers and boarders back to Bourke Street ski run on Saturday, June 14 as the 2021 snow season held a ‘soft’ opening. The resort celebrated the opening of the season, although with lower visitor numbers than usual due to the prevailing COVID restrictions. The first lessons for beginners got under way and local businesses were relieved to get their doors open and customers enjoying the alpine hospitality. “It certainly felt a lot like winter up on Mt Buller and Mt Stirling for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend,” said resort spokesperson Rhylla Morgan. “There was relief around the resort for operators feeling thankful to get open and have guests rolling through the gate, although in much lower numbers than usual due to the restriction on Melbourne visitors.”
Skiers and boarders took their first turns of the season on Bourke Street thanks to a 49cm deep section of snowmaking cover down the middle of the run. Visitors from around the region made the most of the extra availability of accommodation and lift passes, while Melburnians await the green light to come back to the mountain. “It was wonderful to see happy faces back on Bourke Street run this weekend and families enjoying walks and long lunches in the village,” Ms Morgan said. “We would like to thank everyone who came and visited to be part of the Queen’s Birthday weekend, for following the guidelines, scanning in at venues and supporting alpine tourism.”
HAPPY TO BE BACK ON SKIS: Visitors to Mt Buller, Gina, Chris and June from Geelong and Rachel and Kathryn from Torquay welcomed the opening of the 2021 winter snow season with skiing and snowboarding down Bourke Street.
AND AGAIN: Trying out a second run down Bourke Street, Gina, Chris and June had a wow of a time getting back on their skis for another go.
PHOTOS: Jordan Mountain/Mt Buller
IN ACTION: Mt Buller resident Sam Vince was happy to be back on the slopes and tried out Bourke Street’s snow delight on opening day.
THIS IS GOOD: Getting off the Bourke Street chair lift on opening day were Marshall Laney and Tim Gale.
HERE WE GO: Young Jamie (7-years-old) and dad, Sam Downing from Barwon Heads, were delighted to try out the snow on Bourke Street and gave it a thumbs up.
IT WAS GREAT: And Sam Vince was all smiles once he had tried out Bourke Street’s smooth run. Living on the mountain he will no doubt be out every day he can.

Managing director David Ritchie, whose parents Robert and Vivienne planted the grapes that are now used for Delatite wines over 50 years ago, said the new building reflects their business ethos and the way people visit wineries today. “The customer experience is at the forefront of everything we do and offer,” David said. “We aim to foster a relationship with customers so they have a sense of loyalty and connection with the brand and our overarching commitment to sustainability, and our new cellar door does just that.” The new Delatite cellar door has a large tasting area for guests to work their way through the entire Delatite collection in comfort, with a cosy wood fire for the winter months. To the north of the tasting room is the open-plan restaurant with modern finishes, plenty of natural lighting and seating for up to 60 guests. The outdoor deck and courtyard have further seating for guests to enjoy the country ambience and fresh air.
WITH VIEWS: Delatite cellar door’s new venue has spectacular views over the High Country while giving visitors a warm welcome.
NOW OPEN: With the vineyards and Mt Buller as a backdrop Delatite Winery principals were thrilled to announce the opening of the new cellar door. Pictured are (from left) Vivienne Ritchie, Polly Ritchie, Dave Ritchie and designer Lucy Clemenger of Lucy Clemenger Architects, Melbourne.
Fittingly, the designer was Melbourne based practice, Lucy Clemenger Architects, where the senior partner also happens to be Vivienne Ritchie’s niece. “I contacted Lucy to ask if she had any ideas who might design it and she said, ‘would you mind if I throw my hat in the mix?’,” David said. Although Clemenger’s work of late has been predominately residential, she cut her teeth as a young graduate with the Dutch firm Mecanoo and worked as part of the de-
sign team on Federation Square and was keen to get back to commercial work. Clemenger’s life-long knowledge of the family, their site and the business proved to be invaluable advantages to fulfilling the Ritchie family’s vision for the new space. “Our approach was to create a new building that provided a unique wine tasting and dining experience that reflects Delatite’s values and focuses on environmentally sustainable design principles,” Clemenger said.
“Each space has been dedicated to a member of the Ritchie family and their contribution to the business over many years. “It has been a brilliant project to be involved in and we feel that we’ve achieved what we set out to do; over and above.” The design highlights Delatite’s commitment to sustainability, which is a key focus of the business and has been throughout the entire design and building process. “Sustainability is and always has
been important to us,” David said. “We’ve been using biodynamic practices for 15 years now, and whenever the opportunity arises we look for better and more environmentally conscious ways to do things.” The new cellar door and restaurant is located at 390 Pollards Rd, Mansfield and will be open from 11am 5pm daily. PLAYING IT SAFE: Hazardous snow conditions can occur at the drop of a hat - Parks Victoria advise to be prepared if visiting any of the High Country parks during winter. PHOTO: Andrew Railton/Mt Buller
Staying safe in the snow PARKS Victoria are encouraging visitors to the alpine areas to be prepared and stay safe during this winter season, saying that whether snow playing, camping, hiking, driving or backcountry skiing, it is important to understand the risks associated with the alpine environment in winter. Dramatic weather changes are common and should not be underestimated when planning a winter trip. Visitors must be well prepared for sudden changes in conditions and remain alert to hazards including unstable snow, steep icy slopes, avalanches and extreme weather. Parks Victoria will be enforcing visitor
capacity limits in national park areas to prevent overcrowding and ensure visitor safety. Visitors need to be prepared and experienced to manage these hazards. Parks Victoria recommends these basic preparations to stay safe this winter: s #HECK PARK CONDITIONS ONLINE OR CALL s 0REPARE FOR THE WEATHER s /BEY SIGNAGE Whether on the roads or in the parks, signs are there to keep you safe. s #ARRY SNOW CHAINS AND CHECK ROAD CONDITIONS AHEAD s 3TAY IN TOUCH Let friends or family know your plans. s .OTE SEASONAL ROAD CLOSURES Most have taken effect already. Before you visit any of Victoria’s parks, make sure you know the latest information and follow the current public health measures. “Victoria’s stunning alpine regions are a great place to visit over winter, offering fun activities for everyone to enjoy,” said Julien Atherstone, area chief ranger, Parks Victoria. “But everyone has a role to play in ensuring visitor safety. “Please prepare for your visit by checking the weather forecast, bringing the right gear and letting someone know your plans.”

True colour of a shire like Mansfield
By EMMA OLIVER
LOCALLY-grown novelist, playwright and scriptwriter Gabriel Bergmoser is looking forward to the day - hopefully in the not too distant future when he’ll be back in Mansfield, launching his most recent book ‘The True Colour of a Little White Lie’ to a hometown audience. “I did spend a fair bit of time in the region when I was writing the book, as the story is ostensibly set in Mansfield and on Mt Buller, under a fictional guise,” said Gabriel. “I really lifted a lot from my own experience of growing up in Mansfield and going up the mountain (Buller) regularly during winter to ski, and I’ve taken quite a few of my own embarrassing personal anecdotes and filtered them into the story in a somewhat fictional way. “Of all my books, True Colour is the most Mansfield book I’ve ever written, and it will be great to share the book with the local community, especially as
I plan to do a school talk. “My hope is that local kids will relate quite strongly to the story, and see parallels with their own experiences of town.” On bookshop shelves since early April, this work of young adult fiction is a sensitive, introspective and quirky novel addressing feelings of isolation and alienation in the teenage male protagonist. “It’s about a kid who grows up in a small town and his parents take over a ski lodge at a nearby mountain resort and he gets to re-invent himself,” Gabriel said. “But the white lies he tells spiral out of control, leading to this veritable avalanche of chaotic circumstances. “It’s a book for all the weird kids of the world, because I was that kid. “I really struggled to find my place growing up and was a bit of a misfit at school. “I’m very much aware that this can be a bit of a stereotype, but just because it is a cliché, it doesn’t make it any less real.”
The resulting book, due to the personal nature of the tale, came together incredibly smoothly for Gabriel. “It had a charmed life this book from inception to publication - which is so incredibly rare, with agents and the production team alike, seeing and loving the book for what it was,” he said. The universal appeal of the story has seen Gabriel sign a two book deal with Harper Collins for the novel, with a planned follow-up, along with feature film rights picked up by Pirate Size Productions, with funding from the Australian Children Television Network to assist with development. “True Colour was initially conceived as a novel, but now we have both a film version and a play version in development,” Gabriel said. “It’s been an interesting process, developing the story now in three mediums. “My first love was writing novels, however, my Masters was in screenwriting, and the
bulk of my actual output in my early twenties was in theatre. “Theatre teaches you how to write dialogue, film teaches you that strong visual element, and prose teaches you how to go that bit deeper in character and theme. “They all help each other, and in retrospect, it has put me in a very fortunate position with my career in what can be a tricky industry to negotiate.” It has also put Gabriel in the unique position, that he is the obvious choice to write the screenplay for The True Colour of a Little White Lie. “I’d love it if it was filmed in Mansfield,” Gabriel said. “Although the fundamentals of the story are universal, I do believe it should be an Australian story. “And when have the Australian ski slopes ever been depicted in an international film? “The story wouldn’t exist without Mansfield or Buller. “And though compromises need to be made in this industry, I feel like the film belongs here.”
TRUE LIES: Mansfield’s Gabriel Bergmoser releases his latest novel based on his experiences of growing up visiting Mt Buller and living in the local shire.

Mt Buller Property...
Stamp duty savings - a great incentive to purchase at Mt Buller FOLLOWING the devastating impact of the February 2020 bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Victorian Government has announced a reduction of stamp duty for purchases of property in Mt Buller Alpine Resort and the Mansfield Shire. The stamp duty payable is reduced by 50 per cent for properties where the contract of sale was entered into from January 1, 2021. For example, a property purchased for $1 million will see the amount of stamp duty payable reduced from $55,000 to $27,500. Now is the best time to purchase before the reductions come to an end. To be eligible for these savings, the property must be a qualifying use under codes 210-299 and 310-499 of the Australian Valuation Property Classification Code (AVPCC). This includes commercial properties, carparks and residential properties that are

available for holiday rentals. In addition, there are currently concessions available for purchases of residential properties in all of regional Victoria. Alpine properties will often have compul-
sory management and letting agreements, some are for your own personal use, and some will provide for a combination of both. The stamp duty reduction will only apply to residential properties that accommodate
for holiday rentals. Purchasing property at Mt Buller has many rewarding benefits. Not only is an alpine apartment a wonderful lifestyle choice, investments of alpine apartments can also provide great rental returns during and outside of the snow season. It is most important to note the location of the property in terms of proximity to lifts, conveniences, car parking and accessibility to the property when under snow, etc. Onsite parking will increase the value of a property. Check whether ownership and use of a car space is linked to the property and relevant resort vehicle entry permit requirements. If purchasing a property in Mt Buller or Mansfield Shire is something you are interested in, our team is your first choice for assistance.
Hit the slopes for ski and golfing charity day THE annual Adams Ski and Golf Day will be held on the first Friday in July at Mt Buller and the Mansfield Golf Course. This fun event allows teams of four to enjoy the sporting attributes of skiing at Buller and playing golf in Mansfield while raising money for a worthy cause. The fundraising event first commenced in 1999 to raise money towards Mansfield schools’ Snowsports programs and has now raised upwards of $300,000, an outstanding achievement by all involved. Skiers and golfers, no matter how good or bad you are, are invited to take part in this year’s event to be held on Friday, July 2. So Mansfield and regional (and hopefully Melbourne folk by that day) sporties get some friends together to build your team of four and have a fantastic day on the snow, and the fairways, while raising money for the 2021 Mansfield schools’ skiing and snowboarding programs. Money raised will be distributed between Mansfield Primary, Mansfield Secondary, St Mary’s Primary, Merrijig Primary, Jamieson Primary, Steiner School and Mt Buller Sports and Recreation Association to support local

Racing starts at 8.30am. Teams are rewarded for having the smallest time differential between each rider’s two runs. The ski racing will wrap up around 10am and everyone heads down the mountain to the beautiful
The RT Edgar Calcutta will be held the night before (Thursday, July 1) at ABOM Moosehead Bar. Drinks start at 7pm with dinner at 7.30pm - two course set menu for $65 per person (with $10 going directly to the local schools) and drinks at bar prices. Get your team together the night before to wax your skis, polish your clubs, help raise more money and get into the spirit of the event. Teams gather at the clubhouse from 11am with an 18-hole midday tee-off.
Mansfield Golf Club. Following the ski and snowboard leg, the teams make their way to the Mansfield Golf Course for a barbecue lunch followed by an Ambrose competition. After the round finishes, presentations occur at the golf club and a vast array of fantastic prizes are given out to the eight different category winners. These prizes have been generously donated by the 38 secondary sponsors who also make this great event possible.
The golf format will be 4-person Ambrose. Again, it is a team effort with the best ball on each stroke counting. The day will conclude with presentations at the golf club. It does not get much better than this - a ski in the morning and a hit of golf with friends in the afternoon and all for a great local cause. Your entry fee includes: transport to and from Mt Buller, resort gate entry, race entry fee, lift pass, ski hire if needed, barbecue lunch and green fees.
