MT BULLER TOWING
MT Buller’s Alpine Chapel turned 20 years old recently and attendees might have thought they were in the European Alps rather than the Australian Alpine area. The anniversary celebrations began with a service conducted by the Papal Nuncio to Australia, his Excellency Archbishop Paul Gallagher. “It was a full Catholic mass sung in Italian,” parish priest of the Anglican parish of Mansfield, the Venerable Eden-Elizabeth Nicholls said. “Combined with a male choir from the Alpini Association, it was fabulous.” More than 200 people squeezed into the chapel, built to hold some 130 by the Melbourne Alpini Association.

At the end of the mass, Bishop John Parkes of Wangaratta spoke and then shared in the final blessing with the Papal Nuncio. The service was followed by lunch at the ABOM, hosted by Rino Grollo and his wife Diana, patrons and benefactors to the Alpine Chapel. “A beautiful lunch, plenty of singing and much grappa,” the Venerable Nicholls said. The Alpine Chapel is a multidenominational chapel that is used throughout the year. Each Saturday night during the snow season, both Anglican and Catholic services are held, though these services are ecumenical. There are also special services for opening of the snow season, Easter and of course plenty of high country weddings.

Cycle tourism stepping up a gear MT Buller’s EPIC Mountain Bike Trail Project will fast forward with the recent announcement of a $375,000 grant from the Victorian Government. Matching this grant will be contributions of $225,000 from the Mt Buller-Mt Stirling Management Board, $125,000 from the Federal Government and $25,000 from Mansfield Shire Council. This total of $750,000 will see construction of the 40 kilometre trail completed in 2014. At the first public consultancy meeting in April, John Hepper of Inspiring Place and designers of mountain biking trails, outlined the proposal, its course from Mt Buller to Mt Stirling and down through trails finishing at Mirimbah. The trail will utilise some existing ski and bike trails, disused logging tracks, main tracks and roads and about 9km of new trail to be established. Announcing the project during summer, resort management chief executive officer John Huber said this exciting new project has a three way partnership and construction of this new trail will benefit the region and provide a boost to tourism. “This iconic trail will showcase the stunning landscape of the High Country, embrace the local environment and provide a world-class backcountry ride experience that will be unlike

anything else in Australia,” Mr Huber said. The EPIC Mountain Bike Trail Project was identified as a priority project in the 2010 Australian Alps National Landscapes Tourism Strategy. Mt Buller Mt Stirling Management, Australian Alps National Landscape Committee and the Australian Government through the T-QUAL
Strategic Tourism Investment Grants program has funded the project. “This EPIC trail is a classic example of everyone working together to get going,” Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) said. “It will showcase the magnificence of Victoria’s alpine region and is expected to attract mountain biking enthusiasts from around the world.
“The project will not only provide the benefits of further jobs, first of all in construction, but will also decrease the dependence on winter based tourism for Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. “We are fortunate that bicycle based tourism is the next niche that Victoria is working hard to grab hold of. “Well done to all of you who have put this project to-
gether and got it this far - now the hard work begins - get out there and make it happen.” Mr Sykes pointed out that the 40km trail will provide challenging experiences for mountain bikers of all levels and is expected to be the first Australian mountain bike trail to be awarded EPIC accreditation by the International Mountain Bicycling Association.
“EPIC status is reserved for the best mountain bike trails in the world, with only 60 EPIC trails in existence worldwide, mainly in the USA and Europe,” Mr Sykes said. “It will make the area a year-round tourist destination for visitors, reducing local businesses’ reliance on the winter season economy.” Representing the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Mangement Board, vice president Dean Belle said over the past nine years he has had the opportunity to be involved in several committees looking at the future of tourism in the high country. “If you look around the whole area you will see how much has already been achieved,” Mr Belle said. “You only had to be here (Mirimbah) for the March long weekend for the food and wine picnic and watch some of the bike riders come through. “Among the dust and grit was a big smile on the faces of those riders and those smiles were a sign of the ambassadorial quality of what has been achieved so far. “Those 500 families will go away and speak highly of mountain biking - getting out in the great outdoors, coming to Buller-Stirling and through Mansfield.”

Minister to join mountain of ski opening celebrations
By LAURIE BLAMPIED Buller Ski Lifts general manager
By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY MT Buller village will come alive on Saturday, June 8 for the official opening of the 2013 winter snow season. Celebrities will be welcomed to the mountain for the events which will again highlight the importance of families. Officially opening the season this year will be Minister for the Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith. This year’s theme for the season is “My Buller” - it’s all about your experiences and my experiences on the mountain and what they mean to us. And that experience on opening weekend will have something for the whole family including kids activities in the giant igloo, clowns, Barry the Possum and Friends in concert, live music, free drinks, balloons and much more. And throughout the whole weekend there will be Apres music around the village entertaining visitors whereever they go. As part of the celebrations of families and experiences Mt Buller is in the throes of producing the ‘Buller Family Album’ started last year when the Bonza chairlift was opened and families with a long association with the

mountain were invited to attend. The album was mooted for release this year, however, due to the massive input Buller resort management has had to this project the release of the Buller Album will now take place in 2014. At the official opening it is expected that new Alpine Resort Management Board members will be announced and new
faces will be introduced. The Black Tie dinner fundraising for the OWIS will again take place at The Mecure Chalet Hotel on Sunday night and the many lodges and venues around the village will have live music and parties to celebrate this season. The Russian inspired night will focus on Mt Buller athletes who are likely to contend for
selection to the 2014 Australian Olympic Team, including Alex Chumpy Pullin, Katya Crema, Anton Grimus, Belle Brockhoff, Cam Bolton, Brodie Summers, Daniel Morrissy and Mike Rishworth. 2014 Australian Olympic Winter Team Chef de Mission, Ian Chesterman, will be the special guest speaker.
WE cannot wait to welcome all of our guests for another wonderful season on top of the world at Mt Buller in 2013. There has been a great deal of excitement and anticipation building ahead of this season, and we are thrilled that opening weekend has finally arrived. In 2013 we are once again proud to host the Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships (August 18 – 25). This is the largest snowsports event in the southern hemisphere, attracting more than 5000 entries and continues a long standing Buller tradition of hosting the event since 1957. Mt Buller will also be the home of the Subaru National Interschools Championships in 2013 (September 4 – 8). Buller Ski Lifts is continually striving to provide our guests with the highest quality snow experience at the most affordable price, and I believe improvements in our B-TAG system and First Tracks program will help us achieve this goal. In 2013 we have improved our First Tracks program by extending the benefits for all members. After registering your B-TAG on the e-Store you automatically become a First Tracks member and this gives you access to exclusive discounts, the ability to re-load your pass online, plus it gives our guests the added security of being able to replace the B-TAG if it’s lost. Remember your B-TAG is now your lift access for 2013 and beyond, allowing you to continue taking advantage of the financial benefits, added security and convenience of your very own B-TAG for many seasons to come. This year we also gave our guests the chance to purchase their Season Pass ahead of the season, at a significantly reduced price for our guests. We have also invested a further $400,000 into our world class snowmaking fleet, meaning we can offer more snow, more often for our guests. So welcome to Mt Buller, we hope you enjoy your stay with us at Australia’s premier alpine resort and I look forward to seeing you out on the slopes.

Works have Mt Stirling ready for a big season MT Stirling has been given a fresh new look and a brand that better reflects the authentic alpine adventure that can be found at Mt Buller’s natural alpine partner, and better connect with the resort’s target market. ARMB chief executive officer John Huber said that back in 2009 Mt Buller enjoyed its own brand revitalisation, and management felt it was time Mt Stirling received the same attention. “Resort management engaged the same agency that reinvigorated the Mt Buller brand, who has generated a logo that not only reflects the natural environment that Mt Stirling is renowned for, but also sits alongside the Mt Buller brand in a complementary manner and in line with the resort’s competitors,” Mr Huber said. “The new logo represents the nature-based pursuits at Mt Stirling in both summer and winter, represented by the leaf and the green and blue colors,” he said. An upgrade and re-surfacing of the Circuit Road from Telephone Box Junction to King Saddle was completed over this past summer in order to improve snow holding and access to
News in brief More land for resort LEGISLATION earlier this year enacted in the Victorian Parliament is good news for the alpine resorts according to Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla). Mr Sykes said amendments to the Traditional Owner Settlement Act will cut red tape and facilitate responsible development while still protecting cultural heritage sites. The National Parks Acts Amendment Bill 2013 will add nine hectares currently in the National Park into the Alpine Resort. At the same time, approximately 11ha from the slopes of Mount McKay will be excised from the Alpine Resort and added to the National Park.

snow in low snow conditions. Significant drainage works and maintenance works were also undertaken, to repair and improve Howqua Gap Trail for use as both a 4WD track during the summer months and a ski trail in winter. The Stirling Ski Patrol team this year includes Anthony Bock, Vinnie Antony, Mick Stapleton, with new member Dave ‘Danger’ Mc-
Coombe, formerly of Buller . The team has been busy with lots of training leading into the season and is looking forward to another great season. The resort has some new operational equipment to advance and improve ski patrol response and operations including snowmobiles and tracked quad bike. The ski patrol team has un-
dertaken an innovative project in-house to improve the grooming of trails – unique snowmobile grooming bars have been designed and manufactured to lay perfect corduroy on groomed trails, improving the skier experience. Extensive trail rehabilitation works have also been undertaken at Wombats Drop, Bluff Spur and Stirling trails.
MT Buller’s world class snowmaking fleet sprung into action on June 2 and began making snow throughout the resort. The mountain operations team had been on standby for the past two weeks in anticipation of favorable weather conditions which arrived last weekend. Mountain manager Matt Janney said he was thrilled to fire the guns up after temperatures dropped sufficiently on Sunday evening. “We started up the guns on Baldy, Bourke St and Little Buller Spur at around 8pm and pumped four megalitres of water into snow for our first night of snowmaking,” he said. “That is enough snow to fill more than three Olympic size swimming pools.” Snowmaking supports over 25 per cent of skiable terrain on the mountain, ensuring Mt Buller has more snow, more often. Mt Buller has been making snow at the resort since 1994 and continues to invest in the latest technology to deliver the best possible coverage across the resort.
Fun run aids hospital MT Buller enjoyed its busiest Easter in recent years, with several thousand visitors enjoying family fun and entertainment over the four days. On Saturday, the Mountain High Fun Run attracted 330 entrants (the most ever for the event) and raised more than $2000 for the Mansfield District Hospital. In the 9km Buller Breaker to the Summit, Joel Fitzgerald and Alexandra Bull took out men’s and women’s events.
WHILE THE SKIERS ARE AWAY: Gnomes have become synonymous with Mt Buller over the past 10 years especially Mr Gnome who greets travellers a short way up the mountain. Usually on his own at his Gnome home doorway, this year his friends from the top of the mountain came down to hold a pre-season party and were snapped waiting to meet and greet everyone before the snow sets in. But once the snow arrives many of Mr Gnome’s friends started making their way back up the mountain and into their usual hiding places for the children to find while venturing out on the Gnombe Roam - a favorite pastime for visitors to the village. At last count Mr Gnome had only three relatives at his door keeping him company.

The couple honeymooned in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA.
News in brief
Faces promoting Buller BULLER Ski Lifts has a mix of new and old faces in its team this season - particularly in the media sector. Among those bringing you all the gossip around the mountain and what’s happening in the world of skiing and boarding will be (from left) David McNamara (communications manager), Georgina Hood (digital marketing executive), Chris Morecroft (communications co-ordinator), Sally Brook (marketing manager) and David Clark (sponsorship, loyalty and events).
Further upgrades for largest lift network OVER the past five years Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) has invested nearly $15 million into improving infrastructure on Mt Buller. And BSL is committed to ongoing investment to keep its comprehensive network of 22 lifts running all season long. Mt Buller is the only ski resort in Australia to invest in new chairlifts in the past eight years, building three new lifts in this time, including the Bonza Chairlift in 2012. This investment provides continued improvement to a system that can move up to 40,000 skiers and snowboarders every hour. Mt Buller’s much loved Wombat Chairlift also received an upgrade this season, with $500,000 invested in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) access control gates. As well there is a new drive that will see lifting capacity increased by a further 30 per cent on this popular lift that services the intermediate runs of Little Buller Spur and Wombat.
World class snowmaking AN additional $400,000 has been invested in Mt Buller’s world class snowmaking fleet this winter. With the completion of automated snowmaking on Little Buller Spur and Chamois this has now increased to 11 brand new SMI Puma snow guns. As well as extended snowmaking on the Skyline and Baldy areas with eight Polecats permanently relocated to this area. Automated snowmaking improves the quality and efficiency of the resort’s snowmaking facilities, meaning more snow, more often for our guests.

SCHOOL’S IN: Once again the Mt Buller annexe will operate in term three of the school year with many of last year’s students returning to take part in the 10 week ski and learn programs. Pictured are the students from 2012 annexe on top of Mt Buller. PHOTO: Fun Photos
School in the snow ready to open again By PETER HUNT THE Mansfield Secondary College Mt Buller Annexe will operate again in term three. Last year some 17 self funded MSC students from years seven to 10 spent 10 weeks of term three undertaking their schooling on the mountain. “This year we will have 24 students involved in the program,” acting principal Tim Hall said. The annexe allows students to have specialised ski or snowboard training as well as undertaking their school studies on Mt Buller. “We want to support their education and allow them to achieve special ski program outcomes as well,” Mr Hall added. “I suppose we want to de-
velop the next Chumpy Pullin. “Students learn a whole range of skills such as time management, as the schooling is much more self directed.” In morning sessions, students improve their skiing and snowboarding skills under arguably some of Australia’s leading snow sports program providers and coaches. Individual training schedules are devised to meet the students’ goals, with structured training for three hours a day plus the opportunity for preparation in a range of competitions according to their discipline focus. Emphasis is on developing their individual athlete pathway to achieve measurable and real success. In the afternoons, from 1pm to 5pm Monday to Friday, class-
room facilities within the Mt Buller ARMB building are utilised, plus modern communications technology and specialist teacher mentors, students will be able to continue their schooling with curriculum supplied by their base schools. “The students will concentrate on the core subjects maths, science, English and humanities,” Mr Hall said “It is a big day, especially for those who travel up and down the mountain. “They get the 7am bus up, work all day then get the 5pm bus down.” One parent of a student who will be going up and down is Cathy Henry. “My daughter Mary is in year seven and is a good skier,” she said.
“It will be a good experience for her, being more independent. “She will also get to mix with like minded children of a variety of ages.” Ms Henry acknowledged that the students know they cannot get behind in their work or the skiing will not be happening. “The cost to have Mary going up and down has been reduced thanks to special rate tickets from Mansfield Mt Buller Bus Lines,” she added. The annexe is a timely and logical extension of the primary school annexe and serves not only permanent Mansfield and Mt Buller local students and their families, but will also be open for other students to attend.

Interschools to remain on Buller
GREAT OPPORTUNITY: Minister for Education, Martin Dixon, with some of the first winners at the 2012 Subaru Victorian Interschools SnowsSports Championships.
BULLER Ski Lifts (BSL) has announced it will run the Victorian Interschools event itself, in conjunction with the national body Ski & Snowboard Australia Ltd (SSA). The announcement followed an attempt by Schools Snowsports Development Foundation (SSDF) to move the event to Falls Creek. Earlier SSA had disputed SSDF’s claimed ownership of the Victorian Interschools Championships which were originally coordinated by the Victorian Ski Association, now the Victorian Snowsports Association (VSA). The SSDF committee conceded that for the beneďŹ t of all schools, two interschools events this year would be counter productive. SSDF chair Leigh Crang said his committee had agreed to cancel the SSDF event and support the event held at Mt Buller for 2013. Mr Crang also confirmed
SSDF had been forced to make its two employees redundant. “They have given loyal service to the SSDF, and the School Snowsports community, for more than 13 years,â€? he said. And SSDF sponsorship agreements with a number of companies have been terminated, in particular Subaru Australia, which is also a major sponsor to other states’ interschools committees. Mr Crang said the SSDF ďŹ rmly believes that state-based schools events should be run by not-forproďŹ t state-based organisations. He said SSDF remains committed to contributing to the development of opportunities for schools in snowsports and the maintenance of efďŹ cient and affordable events. “SSDF will be releasing its plans for 2014 events at the end of this ski season,â€? he added. Mt Buller set the date for the Victorian Interschools for August
4 (cross country) and August 19 to 25 for alpine, freestyle and snowboard events. Entries close for the cross country championships on Thursday, July 18, for all other events on Thursday, August 1 and the event information website can be found at: www.vicinterschools.com.au. In addition, Buller Ski Lifts has announced the appointment of David Speirs to the role of event manager of the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships. Mr Speirs has worked in the Australian Ski Industry for more than 25 years. His broad experience includes being an Olympic mogul ski coach at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, a fully certiďŹ ed French ski coach and national pacesetter in giant slalom and slalom and a level 4 Australian Professional Ski Instructors trainer and examiner.
SSDF committee clarifies position on Vic Interschools Our vision is to provide a broader range of cost effective locally based training and events and to increase participation from schools across all sectors. hosting agreement with Buller Ski Lifts (BSL), however, BSL did not submit an offer by the due date. Falls Creek, however, submitted a very attractive offer. Soon after announcing the new venue, BSL and Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) made a joint public announcement that they would also conduct an Interschools event at the same time at Mt Buller. This unprecedented move naturally caused huge concern for the SSDF and the school snowsports community. Further, SSA announced that they believed they owned the Interschools events and outlined plans to take over
the management of the Victorian Interschools. A number of meetings between parties were held. However, SSA was resolute in usurping the independent role that SSDF has held over many years. The SSDF committee offered to assist SSA and BSL by allowing use of intellectual property, trophies, the entry system, the website and experienced people to join their committee. These offers too were rejected. In its state the SSDF in conjunction with the VSA said it was working to maintain their rightful place in delivering quality events to Victorian students. “The SSDF remains committed to contributing to the development of our sport and the maintenance of appropriate, efďŹ cient and affordable events,â€? the statement said. “Our vision is to provide a broader range of cost effective locally based training and events and to increase participation from schools across all sectors. “We will soon be amending the SSDF constitution to be even more democratic and representative and to include stronger school representation,â€? the SSDF statement read.

THE SSDF committee of management has outlined its position with regard to the huge concern over the Victorian Interschool Snowsport Championships. Since 1957 the Interschool Snowsport Championship events have been developed and organised by knowledgeable volunteers including school principals, teachers and parents. The governance group was originally formed as a committee of the Victorian Ski Association (VSA) and since 1999 the Snowsports Development Foundation (SSDF), an independent, incorporated, not-for-proďŹ t organisation has run the events. In the 1990s the Skiing Victoria division of Skiing Australia (now SSA) ran the event during a short period where the VSA amalgamated with that body. Mt Buller has always hosted the Victorian event, with the national event alternating between various NSW and Victorian resorts. Following a very tumultuous period the SSDF informed school coordinators of the current situation and the events, which led to this year’s decision. After the Interschools last year the SSDF wished to negotiate a further

reforms to Alpine resorts MINISTER for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, announced plans for a stronger industry-wide approach to the management of Victoria’s six alpine resorts at Mt Buller in May. Addressing alpine industry leaders at the Australian Alpine Resorts forum held at Mount Buller, Mr Smith said the plan was focused on ensuring the long-term viability of the state’s alpine resorts and would see an even greater emphasis on accountability, transparency and engagement. Some 140 people attended the forum representing resort staff and board members, government agencies, retail industry and other stakeholders. “Victoria’s alpine resorts are

of enormous importance to our state, generating income for local economies and jobs for Victorians,” Mr Smith said. “The latest data shows that more than one million people visit our alpine resorts annually, and last winter alone our resorts generated $647 million in Gross State Product and around 6000 jobs. Mr Smith said new alpine resort master plans would be developed by each resort over the coming 12 to 18 months, and will include precinct development plans, infrastructure plans, fire and emergency management plans and native vegetation provisions. “These plans will set the vision for the future of each of our alpine resorts,” said Mr Smith.
The establishment of a new industry advisory group, the Alpine Resorts Industry Advisory Group (ARIAG), to work with the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council, government and portfolio agencies was also announced. Members of the Alpine Resorts Industry Advisory Group include Nick Whitby - chief executive officer for Buller Ski Lifts Pty Ltd. As part of the package of reforms, Mr Smith also announced: z new uniform reporting requirements for all resorts to ensure increased accountability; z changes to the alpine industry’s marketing model to ensure a more integrated, state-wide approach to better share resources;
z the development of a new five-year strategic marketing plan by Tourism Victoria and the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council, in consultation with Alpine Resort Management Boards, the ARIAG, and relevant regional tourism boards. “The new marketing plan will focus on domestic and international target markets and will work to support domestic activities under the Snow Australia brand.” In closing, Mr Smith said these important reforms are part of the Coalition Government’s aim to ensure Victorians get maximum benefit from the state’s world class natural assets, including alpine resorts, national parks and other public land.

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY KEEPING pace with modern trends, Uncle Pat’s on Mt Buller has had a name change and has gone up-market and on-line with its service delivery. Changing the branding to Pat’s Italian this season the popular pizza and pasta bar restaurant has had a facelift, name change and has gone to on-line ordering. The name change also comes with a new logo which was specially designed by Benalla artist Louise Carlisle. “The artist typifies what we feel we represent in the Italian food industry,” owner Catherine McNish said. Catherine, and husband Darren, said going to on-line

ing for pizzas and pasta Pat’s has also applied for a liquor licence to enable customers to also order alcohol when placing their dinner orders. “On top of all this we have introduced hand made pasta this year – in keeping with authentic Italian cuisine,” Catherine said. Last week it was all go, go, go, at Pat’s as the last minute details were being put in place including new lighting, signage and staff orientation.
This season chef Chris Leitch returns for his fourth year and supervisor Emily Konicek returns for her third. Two other staff members, one chef and one customer service officer, also return for their second season on the mountain. However, joining the team will be head chef Pedro Gearin who hails from Queensland (see chef profile). So at Pat’s Italian it is now ‘Open for Business’.

Buller fire management plans in place for season By DAVID MIMS COUNTRY Fire Authority (CFA) Region 23 operations officer Paul Horton will again be taking up residency at Mt Buller fire station for the 2013 ski season. From June 3 to October 4, Mr Horton will oversee the CFA’s responsibility for Fire Management and Emergency Response at Mt Buller, making this the fourth year of this support. As a benchmark of this work,
CFA responsibilities include all facets of Fire and Emergency Management that the public are able to access at their home away from the resort. A major part of the role, apart from the operational response to incidents, is to plan with, educate, and improve safety for all organisations, operators, and the public in relation to fire readiness and safety on the mountain. Commenting on their role, Mr Horton said: “Given the isolation of the winter and the
increased risk to the public and mountain staff alike, CFA has worked hard with the resort board, resort businesses and Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) to improve and educate all key organisations about fire safety. In recent times the resort has completed planning for integrated fire management and those programs will commence in due course to enhance fire safety during the non snow months.
“CFA is very appreciative of the efforts of Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Board, BSL and other agencies in engaging CFA to assist in reducing the risk of Fire and its consequences in and around Mt Buller,” said Mr Horton. Some of the specific projects to be undertaken through winter include: z further development of partnerships to deliver the overall fire management strategy on the mountain;
z continued inspection programs with lodges and business to increase fire resilience; z day to day assistance and advice to lodge managers and owners; z inspections of lodges by brigade members for operational planning and improved understanding; and z ongoing support of all brigades in the Mansfield group as normal. Mt Buller CFA Brigade has been under the captaincy of
Stuart Wadsworth who will be handing the reins over to Ewen Macaskill who was previously first lieutenant, so there is plenty of experience at hand in the leadership team. Together with the specialist equipment and appliances at the station, a dedicated team of volunteers, and on call backup from off mountain CFA resources, once again Mt Buller is in good hands with fire management and emergency response this winter.
RISING STAR: Mollie Fernandez competing at Breckenridge USA during December and January.
Rising boarder succeeds in USA YOUNG Mt Buller rider Mollie Fernandez had a ripper of an Australian season at Mt Buller in 2012, training with Transition Snowboard Camp (TSC) and then went on to even more success in the USA over our summer. At Buller last year she gained a first in the two Mt Buller Mini Grand Prix’ – GS; first in the Mt Buller Cup – GS; first in the Victorian Junior Championship at Mt Buller – GS; first in the Victorian Junior Championship at Mt Hotham – Slope Style; and King of the Mountain Overall – 1st in GS, PGS & BX – for the 2nd year running. In the Victorian Interschools she gained a first in BX and a second in GS and at the Australian Interschools a first
in GS and 11th in BX. On top of this she also took out two first and two second podiums at the New Zealand Nationals in September to win the Overall NZ National Champion. Mollie also gained podium finishes in the Thredbo Freeride Series BX and the Australian Junior Series Slope Style at Perisher. In December Mollie trained and competed in Breckenridge (USA) with TSC for eight weeks. In the USASA Rocky Mountain Series, she was on the podium six times in various events, qualifying herself to compete at the USASA Snowboard Nationals in April just gone, in all five snowboard events.

At the nationals, in a field of 25 riders, Mollie took out the gold in the Giant Slalom, fifth in Slalom, seventh in Slope Style, 10th in Half Pipe, and 17th in Boarder Cross (qualified 4th). These results placed her second in the Overall National Champion in the Youth Women’s division (14-15years), being bottom age. This winter Mollie, who still rides for Rip Curl, will train once again with TSC and MBRC and compete in many local events, including the Victorian and Australian Interschool Championships both being held at Mt Buller. Here’s hoping for heaps and PODIUM FINISHES: Mollie Fernandez had six podium finishes during her time in the USA. heaps of snow this year.

People’s Choice award winner announced
MOST POPULAR: “Irene” by Christabel Wigley received 20 per cent of all people’s choice votes, making it the winner of this category in the inaugural Mt Buller Sculpture award.
A NEW ANGLE ON THINGS: Louis Pratt stands beside his award winning sculpture “Voyeur” which has been acquired by Mt Buller as the first piece of scultpure for its proposed alpine sculpture park.
MT Buller Arts Association was delighted to announce artist Christabel Wigley’s stunning sculpture ‘Irene’ as the winner of the People’s Choice award in the inaugural acquisitive Mt Buller Sculpture Award. The exhibition of the 22 shortlisted works concluded at the end of April, with Wigley’s creation attracting 20 per cent of the people’s choice votes, and winning her a cash prize of $10,000, courtesy of Foodworks Supermarket. Irene is constructed from charred Cyprus and steel. Artist Christabel Wigley said: “Ever since I was a child the Japanese painting ‘Great Wave of Kanagawa’ by artist Katsushika Hokusai has caused me great fascina-

tion, when I look at it the intense emotion wells up inside of me. “The awesome scale of Mount Buller and sur-
rounding landscape ignite the same intense emotion in me. “I was interested in producing work in re-
sponse to the landscape that responds seasonally within the landscape.” Louis Pratt’s Voyeur was announced as the
winner of the inaugural acquisitive $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Award, in February. Voyeur was selected by award judge Doug Hall AM and is now permanently sited in Buller Village Square, being the first piece in the Mt Buller Sculpture Park. The newly established biennial $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Award is one of Australia’s top two most valuable art prizes. The award is open to both Australian and international artists and over the next decade and beyond, will create Australia’s first mountain-top Sculpture Park, with the award-winning sculptures exhibited in perpetuity in the spectacular surrounds of the Mt Buller alpine village.
Buller sculpture discovery ‘Voyeur’ the first piece for new Mt Buller Sculpture Park in village TOURISTS over summer were encouraged to visit the High Country through to the end of April to explore the region and view 20 works of contemporary sculpture displayed around the Mt Buller village and surrounding bush. Winner of the inaugural acquisitive Mt Buller Sculpture Award was Louis Pratt from Summer Hill in Sydney. Mr Pratt’s sculpture “Voyeur” was chosen ahead of 21 other shortlisted entries by award judge Doug Hall AM, a distinguished art critic and curator. His entry, along with the 21 others made up the display with a People’s Choice awarded on April 24. Mr Pratt’s piece was made using new technologies as applied to art, and involved laser scan data, software, and three dimensional (3D) printing to finally mould and construct in steel and fibreglass the final result. “It took 1000 hours of 3D printing alone to produce a whole series of 25 cubic metre sections of thermal plastic to then assemble into 29 pieces then hand finish. eye level for viewers, and uses optic distortion to provide the visual 3D effects that become apparent when seen on location. As for the $100,000 prize, Mr Pratt said he will look to purchase more technology, including a 3D scanning system, and perhaps a robotic arm to help with carving and milling of future sculptures. The $100,000 Mt Buller Biennial Sculpture Award is just the beginning of a long term goal by the Mt Buller Arts Association to develop the world’s first Alpine Sculpture Park. Arts Association director, Michael David, acknowledged the government’s support of an $18,500 grant for this creative undertaking. He said the inaugural exhibition of 20 sculpture works would provide a preview of how the only above snowline Sculpture Park would evolve as a permanent exhibition in the future. Funding towards the $63,500 inaugural Alpine Summer Sculpture Discovery event was provided through the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund’s Putting Locals First Program.

The Arlburg has undergone some major changes CONTINUING on from its rebuild early last year, The Arlburg Hotel has swung into action again and is now refurbishing its entrance and reception area. Gone will be the old wooden lined foyer which once housed a bank and ski hire. The ski hire has moved to a downstairs area and the entrance now hosts a new sports bar and lounge, including a kids corner. Opening its doors again last year, almost half the hotel was bulldozed and rebuilt over one summer, affording a modern restaurant complete with an open sun deck overlooking Bourke Street. This sundeck is now in full operation and will give skiers and spectators magnificent views right down Bourke Street and across the village. The restaurant has also welcomed several new chefs to the restaurant this season. New executive chef will be Peter Waters (PJ) who was previously exec chef at Aggie Grays in Samoa
and has come to Buller with loads more experience. All up there are some 10 chefs servicing the restaurants and bar. The new sports bar will see the return of the popular pool tables with pool competitions planned for the season and reintroducing the ‘pot ‘n shot’ during the afternoons. Taking on management roles this season will be husband and wife team Jeanette and Jeff Whyte, formerly of Jamieson Brewery. Jeanette said the hotel was continuously working on renovations and improving this popular family venue and was just getting ‘bigger and better’. The guest area is still improving and visitors to the mountain are invited to drop in and view the memorabilia that now lines the walls near the restaurant and along the entrance to the sun deck. “You don’t have to be a guest to call in to the Arlburg,” Jeanette said.

Buller Central YHA part of mountain of development MT Buller has been a hive of tradies over this past summer with various building projects in full swing. The most noticable is that of the rebuilding of Buller Central YHA on the skirts of the village square. From an early style old lodge building a new and tremendous four storey high building has emerged. The complex will host ‘The Powder Bar’, an apres bar on the ground floor, plus an Italian style restaurant for guests on level two named ‘Ollies’ as well as retail outlets on the ground floor, while the storeys above will accommodate more guests than in the past, and the basement will allow for lots of parking. The 18 guest suites and shared rooms all have en-suites giving more privacy with the family suites allowing for families of four to share. Package deals include breakfast and fine dining at Ollies. Buller Central YHA is located next to the main access lift Blue Bullet and is a stone’s throw from resort cafes, restaurants, ski hire outlets, supermarket, cinema and much more.
ON THE RISE: Towering over the Buller Village Square is the new Buller Central YHA expected to be completed during this winter season.
It will be officially opened by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, on June 8 and is expected to be fully operational from June 28. The Duck Inn has also been rebuilt from the ground up and
has taken on a modern and welcoming appearance. Enzian on Chamois although not rebuilt has had much renovations and is under new management. And the Arlburg at the top of the hill has also undergone
more renovations since last season with a new and welcoming reception area and sportsmans bar. Other lodges have been spruced up and the whole mountain is looking a picture and ready to welcome visitors.

ESTABLISHED 28 YEARS!
HOTEL Enzian on Chamois has new owners and managers this season. Recently being sold under the guidance of receivership, the hotel has been purchased by a consortium, and long time mountain identities Ann Jaggard and Laurie Harcus have taken on the role of managers and revivalists for the hotel. Ann has lived on Mt Buller for the past 26 years and Laurie for 18, both having gained extensive experience in the alpine area and also know the mountain back to front. Laurie is known for his ownership firstly of Duck Inn, then Wok Works and also the Pancake Parlour, both of the latter he still owns. Ann said they wanted to give the hotel a lift, a new vibe and get people back over ‘that side of the mountain’.
“We have refurbished all the ensuite bathrooms, with fresh new towels and linen for each of the motel style rooms and have in some areas given the place a lot of TLC and a coat of paint.” The former sports bar will become a part of the new dining-restaurant-bar area and the restaurant will cater for guests and mountain visitors alike. The restaurant will now seat some 85 guests for dinner and will be open ‘til late. “We have employed two fabulous chefs this season and with a larger dining area hope to see more visitors come for dinner,” Ann said. “David Ludworth, who has done lots of work at Falls Creek, Perisher and in Canada, and Craig O’Halloran will both join us this season. “We would like to think that people can just come in and spend a cosy afternoon by the bar and in a good environment.”

July 5 BUILDING BRIDGES: Mansfield Primary School preps and their grade four buddies get to know each other and the environment at Mirimbah Park recently.
School to Summit program linking students with Buller THIS year sees the start of an ambitious new program at Mansfield Primary School (MPS), encompassing all grade levels, called School to Summit (S2S), the brain child of principal Paul Volkering and physical education teacher Tom MacMunn. The program’s aims are to build community by connecting students across the school, build resilience by providing a supportive environment in which to take risks and challenges, and to provide students with an opportunity to explore, enjoy, and build respect for the local environment.
The program culminates in grade six, when all students from that year embark on a four day cycling and walking journey from the school to the Mt Buller summit, hence the S2S name. Program co-ordinator MacMunn described the grade six event as a “rite of passage” from primary to secondary school. Integral to S2S, stretching from prep to grade 6 is the “Better Buddies” initiative, where each child from prep to grade two are paired up with a “buddy” from a higher grade, a link that will ultimately pair buddies together for three years. Grade 4 students, with help from grade three, are paired up
with prep, grade fives will buddy grade ones, and grade six will buddy grade two. From grade two onwards, there will be specific S2S activities including a campout in second term for grade twos, an outdoor arts day in term one, and arts camp and trail ride in term four for grade three, and for grade four a Stirling summer and Stirling winter experience and a rail trail ride. Commenting on the Stirling activity, Mr Volkering said one of the key considerations in the program is to have equity and fairness to allow all kids to access all S2S programs. “Hence the Stirling winter

experience will involve all grade four students and include cross country skiing (snow permitting), but won’t be part of the grade three program. Mr Volkering, together with school council will be seeking ways to attract external sponsorship to assist with funding of some of the larger activities such as Stirling, to again help ease the burden on families and make it more accessible for all. He added that welfare programs at the school will also now come under the S2S programs, with the Better Buddies a key platform in achieving the aim of building those connections across students at all levels.

Duck Inn rebuilt from the ground up
MANSFIELD
SKIER PROFILE
YOUNG GUNS: Tom, Henry and Alex Eisner are three young guns in the snow scene on Mt Buller having started skiing from three years of age.
Brothers part of Team Buller Riders
RISING FROM RUBBLE: The new look Duck Inn has risen from rubble since the end of October 2012 and is nearing completion - just in time for the opening of this season.
NAME:
TOM, HENRY AND ALEX EISNER THE Eisner boys, Tom, Henry and Alex, are three young MansďŹ eld skiers who took to the slopes of Mt Buller from a very early age. Each started skiing from the age of three and being encouraged by their parents John and Jenny, have progressed to a level where they are now putting in as instructors themselves. All three boys attend Geelong Grammar School but for their junior years they started cross country skiing with the MansďŹ eld Steiner School and MansďŹ eld Primary School and the Secondary College as well as making the most of the team Xtreme program at Buller. All three are now enjoying the jumps and park with the
Team Buller Riders. Along with a great bunch of their local mates they have competed and won divisions in the State Interschools, have won a few Victorian Moguls titles and have taken out gold in the national moguls and also competed well in the annual Abom Mogul Challenge. The twins, Henry and Alex have gone on to share their experiences with other up and coming juniors taking on the role of instructors for the past two years - encouraging other juniors to aspire in snow related competitions. And the future? Well all three will continue to compete in Interschools, representing their current school and who knows what comes after that?

A new executive and committee were elected at the April meeting to continue the excellent work of the council. In a change of positions, Lee

Liz Bannister retained the vice president’s position. Four new committee members were elected, with Kym Stubbs, Margaret Purcell, Poppe Davis and Sarah McCleery joining the already busy arts council line up. Outgoing president Melinda
Grant’s report focused attention on the supporters and sponsors of Arts Council events throughout the year, and especially highlighted the ongoing relationship with the MansďŹ eld and District Community Bank, which has increased its sponsorship to more than $6000. The report also focused on the significance of a wide ranging portfolio of events to highlight the arts in the MansďŹ eld district.

The lodge will still host a ski hire, reception area, bar and restaurant as well as new and stylish ensuite rooms. Each room has windows looking out either over the village or out to Mt Stirling giving spectacular views over the mountains beyond. Modernising this lodge was foremost in Mr Stanish’s mind and all windows are double glazed and the outside meets with Alpine Resort standards with stone facings. The three storey lodge building is expected to be completed by the start of this snow season and will be ‘open for business’. Marketing for the new Duck Inn has also been updated and now features a single duck in its stylish new logo.

MT Buller’s renowned Duck Inn lodge and restaurant has undergone a complete rebuild over this past summer. Aleks Stanish ďŹ rst purchased a half share in the lodge some 11 years ago running it in conjunction with Rozanne Lawton. Three years ago Mr Stanish purchased the remaining share of the lodge and announced plans to ‘refurbish’ the popular winter venue. However, once starting on the refurbishment it was decided to start again and the foundations, set ďŹ rmly in rock was all that remained. The Duck Inn has now risen from the ground again with a complete new style and the restaurant moving from the ďŹ rst oor to ground level.

ACCORDING to Mark Adams Real Estate, whose company has sold more than 15 properties in recent months on Mt Buller, transactions are happening where parties are prepared to be flexible on price to meet the current market. Some purchasers currently own a property and are upgrading while others are legend skiers as well as first time Buller property buyers who recognise that this is now the time to purchase in the cycle. More than 15 sales vindicate that sellers who are prepared to meet the market and have a property to suit the current demand can sell. Mark has recently had some terrific ‘Base of Buller’ sales too. Getting the right advice is important in terms of a specialist solicitor especially with sales related to Alpine leasehold and direction towards a proven bank lender is often sought to finalise a transaction. Just as choosing a professional real estate agent to sell or buy from and following the agent’s advice where flexibility and experience can greatly assist. Mark Adams Real Estate offers both sellers and buyers up to date sound advice in all property fields in the Mt Buller and Base of Buller market. Currently there are new listings and existing properties at great prices to suit every budget and all can be viewed on Mark Adams’ website. Follow the leaders and capitalise on the opportunities as this is the time in the cycle to purchase.
