SNOW AT LAST
MT BULLER’S iconic Bourke Street run opened for skiing on June 16 as predicted for the first time in 2013. Mt Buller was at the time the only Victorian resort open for skiing and snowboarding, after temperatures dropped to -3.3, allowing the snowmaking guns to fire up after a dusting of snow on Saturday. “After months of preparations by

ALPINE resort entry statistics for the first two weeks of the 2013 snow season show visitor numbers down from the same period last year, reflecting the lack of snow in the opening period.
In figures released by the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council, total numbers in week one were 10,925, down from 18,261 last year, and for week two 5,921 down from 9,998 in 2012. Mt Buller figures were down
in line with the overall trend, but the good news is that Mt Buller still received almost three times the number of visitors than any of the other Victorian resorts over those two weeks. Week one saw 4563 visitor
entries compared to 5422 in 2012, and for week two, 2765 compared to 3244 last year. With good snow falls last week, the numbers should soon start rising as the temperatures start falling.

VISITORS to Mt Buller village this winter will be in for a big surprise. The former YHA lodge is no more and in its place stands a magnificent four storey modern complex which incorporates a retail outlet, Apres Bar, accommodation and a restaurant. On ground level is SnowFox and The Powder Bar as well as hostel reception, administration and some accommodation suites. On the first floor up are the lounge areas, dining room and a full commercial kitchen, and again with some suites. Above these are two more floors for accommodation which can sleep families, groups and singles with its 18 guest suites all of which have en-suites. Buller Central, as it is now known, was offically opened on June 8 by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith. Mr Smith said prior to cutting the traditional ribbon that this complex blended in well with the environment, and will be a boost for accommodation and hospitality. He congratulated the developer Mark Elliott and all the trades people who had worked tirelessly over the summer to

IGLOO SHELTER: Although the sun was shining for opening day the wind was still chilly and many families took advantage of the activities inside Mt Buller’s Giant Igloo in village square for warmth.
NO SNOW?: Who said there was no snow for opening? Snow makers were very busy the night before opening covering the slopes of Bourke Street and the play area near the tennis courts just to give families a taste of what the season will bring.
Snow season officially opens
MT BULLER officially marked the beginning of the 2013 snow season with festivities across the mountain, and Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith and his family enjoyed the sun, snow and hospitality. Mr Smith welcomed all to the mountain for what is expected to be a great season. “You will have a magnificent season on Mt Buller
with a significant increase in snowmaking,” Mr Smith said. “I wish you all to have a great time and enjoy with family and friends as we all look forward to the next few months.” There was plenty of manmade snow made specially for the opening which meant visitors were able to have their first snowball fight and toboggan of the season. Bourke Street ski run and
Village Snow Play Park were covered in a blanket of snow, to the delight of young and old. General manager of Buller Ski Lifts, Laurie Blampied, said the transformation was a credit to Mt Buller’s Mountain Operations team. “They say a week is a long time in politics but I assure you 24 hours is an eternity in the world of snowmaking,” Mr Blampied said.
“We are thrilled to have snow on the ground for opening weekend and we cannot wait to welcome our guests on top of the world.” Guests were treated to fun and festivities all afternoon in the village square, with live music, kids’ entertainment, complimentary warm cider and hot chocolate, plus an incredible fireworks show that lit up the night sky and
marked the beginning of another huge snow season at Mt Buller. Smith officially opened the season, as well as Mt Buller’s newest hotel complex, Buller Central. Marketing and communications manager for Mt Buller Resort Management, Amber Gardner, said the weekend was a great celebration made even better with the first taste of snow.
“This is a great time to come together and celebrate the first official day of the season. “We’re now looking toward what is set to be another fun-filled season here on Mt Buller, with a great range of events, activities and fantastic deals ahead from now until spring. “We look forward to welcoming everyone here on top of the world.”

ALPINE SPORTS MEDICINE WORKSHOP
SNOW safety has always been important at Mt Buller. The mountain was one of the first to set up a Ski Rescue Service with trained first aiders to assist those who met with accidents. In 1965 the first Mount Buller Medical Centre (next to the Ski Patrol building) was built with renovations taking place in 1995. Each year this busy little centre treats hundreds of visitors. Staff work on a rotation system of a Mansfield based medical team – from one to three doctors, up to two nurses, a receptionist and sometimes medical students live on the mountain and perform many miracles. According to Dr Andrew Wettenhall, the centre staff are very versatile, treating anything from minor ailments to on-slope accidents. “Broken bones and dislocations are the most common accidents,
DOCTORS Graham Slaney and Andrew Wettenhall from Mansfield Medical Clinic and Mt Buller Medical Centre recently spent a weekend at Mt Hotham as instructors for an alpine sports medicine workshop. The workshop was specifically designed for GPs and GP registrars looking to build confidence and skills needed to handle emergency
but we also see some pretty major head and neck traumas,” Dr Wettenhall said. He added that during peak season, the medical centre often treats up to 65 people per day. “Our medical team takes care of most cases, but we also end up calling in ambulances to transfer patients to Mansfield, Wangaratta and Melbourne, with really bad accident victims being helicoptered from Bourke Street.” The medical centre staff, when

Prevention is better than cure, but it’s reassuring to know that Mt Buller’s well equipped medical centre with medical staff specifically trained in ‘Ski Resort Medicine’ are close at hand if needed.

Snow traffic in police sights By DAVID MIMS WITH the onset of the snow season, Mansfield police, and in particular the Highway Patrol Group (HWP), will be out and about to monitor and enforce road safety this winter season. Sergeant Marty McLachlan from Mansfield HWP said that in addition to statewide operations, there will be a number of specific areas of focus locally, particularly in relation to ski traffic. Overall, Sgt McLachlan said: “Our local motorists are generally very well behaved, but they need to be vigilant and aware of the incoming traffic, and the sometimes inappropriate behavior of tourist traffic.” He said there was often a mistaken perception from city drivers heading to the snow that there were less police in the country and therefore more liable to ignore the rules or indulge in risky behavior. “Last year, we immediately impounded, on average, one vehicle per week for doing 145km or more on Mt Buller Road, so there will be speed detection cameras and aerial detection along that stretch of road,” said Sgt McLachlan. Another specific focal point will be the Merrijig Primary School and a zero tolerance of any drivers ex-

leading drivers to overtake on double lines and trying to bypass the queue of stationary drivers, would not be tolerated. And it’s not just cars that will be looked at, with police planning to check coach and bus drivers to ensure they have the appropriate hazardous area authority permits that allow them to drive in the snow, plus the usual licence and chain requirements. So the message is clear for all motorists heading to the Buller and Stirling ski fields this winter. Police will not be tolerating unsafe and unlawful road behavior that endangers all road users, and the chances of detection will be greater than ever.

Road patrols will be out and about with identified peak times of Tuesday morning, Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon receiving particular attention from the highway patrol. Monitoring and enforcement of requirements to carry wheel chains will be another area of interest to police and any driver found not carrying the appropriate chains on a day where chains are designated will be fined and turned around. Buller champions off to Russia By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY AT least seven Mt Buller athletes are expected to make it to the 2014 Sochi, Russian, Winter Olympic Games in 2014. Among the team will be Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin and Anton Grimus. I got to catch up with both of these young men at the Olympic Winter Institute fundraising dinner at The Chalet on opening weekend. With two World Cup Crystal Balls in his possession now and the Ski and Snow Association’s Athlete of the Year Award, Chumpy is assured of a place on the team. Although athletes going to Russia will consider themselves as all part of the ‘team’ Chumpy described the sport as individual and not team sports. “It’s every man for himself when you get out there to compete,” Chumpy said. “Me and Anton had a couple of heats together (on the world cup circuit over summer) but it is still a very individual effort - and although not a team sport we do work as a team, especially in training. “As a team going into the Olympics, it is great,” Chumpy said Sochi will be wild, fun and fantastic.
FAMILY BACKING: The Grimus family at the recent OWI dinner at The Chalet (from left) Hans, Lotte, Anton, Rebecca Hooper and Gitti Grimus are behind Anton in his quest to reach the Winter Olympics in Russia next year.
“We saw some tough conditions for the world cup competitions and we think the Olympics will be similar. “Australia has a presence on the international stage now, not only with competitors in the field, but a real threat and very promising,” Chumpy said. Chumpy will always call Mansfield and Mt Buller home
despite the fact that his family have now broken the ties having sold their Pullin’s Ski Hire and moved to the central coast of NSW. Chumpy said he is far from giving up snowboard cross as a career with many years ahead of him still. “There is one competitor who is around the 36 years
mark, so I’m guessing if I can still compete at that age I will. “After that I would love to go into coaching,” Chumpy said. “I already have a great deal to do with the young snowboarders coming up through the ranks and encourage and guide them as much as I can.” However, Chumpy does have other options up his sleeve
as during summer he often rides the waves in surfing and is an accomplished musician. Anton Grimus is currently juggling his skiing competitions with university studies. Taking on an engineering course and moving to a Canberra campus so he can be closer to AIS training faciltiies, he finds juggling the two
courses of his life not too bad. “When it is summer here, university is in recess so I can easily travel overseas to compete in winter events in the northern hemisphere. “When it is winter here I can do my studies and compete and train on the snowfields in Australia - it also helps that we have a big break from uni in the middle of the year and at the height of our snow season,” Anton said. Anton commutes back to Mt Buller whenever he can to be near his family and his beloved Mt Buller. He was schooled for seven of his junior years at Merrijig Primary School and was a member of the school’s ski program and then went on to Mansfield Secondary College. Anton said the season ahead looked like being a big one especially in the lead up to the Sochi Olympics. “But I will be back at Mt Buller as much as I can, but I have to train with the AIS and that includes time in New Zealand in September,” he said. Mt Buller is hoping conditions will be right in August for the Olympic team to spend at least one week on Mt Buller as part of their training for the Olympics. “We are all looking forward to January,” Anton said.

New boards for alpine resorts MINISTER for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith announced new appointments to Victoria’s Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council and the five Alpine Resorts Management Boards at the opening weekend celebrations. Mr Smith, who officially opened the 2013 ski season at Mt Buller on June 8, said there were seven new appointments, four new chairs, and 14 members that had been reappointed to the state’s alpine boards. For Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Dean Belle (deputy chair) was re-elected along with Bryce Moore. New appointments to the board are Andrew Evans and John Lithgow. The chairperson position, currently held by Jennifer Hutchison, was not up for reappointment this year. At the Mt Buller Mt Stirling ARMB winter welcome cocktail party, Ms Hutchison introduced the board to guests but at the same time said this particular board would be renewed in full in 18 months time. She welcomed the two new members and said she was looking forward to working with them.

Appointments to the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council (ARCC) are Michael Marasco (chair - new), Ian Swan (new) and Leigh Phillips. “The calibre of applicants was very high and I am looking forward to working with a group of people who have the passion and the expertise
to drive the management of Victoria’s alpine resorts,” Mr Smith said. “I welcome Michael Marasco as the new chair of the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council who will be responsible for driving the implementation of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan 2012.
“Mr Marasco has a career history in local government, most recently as chief executive officer at the City of Maroondah. “He was also the independent chair of the Peninsula Link Community Advisory Group. “Our Alpine resorts are special and unique places
that are an important part of Victoria’s economy and tourism industry,” Mr Smith said. “They are good examples of how people can enjoy the natural environment in an appropriate and sustainable way.” Mr Smith said the new appointments would bring fresh
ideas and innovation while building on the good work of the current members. The appointments were chosen after an expression of interest and interview process earlier this year. There were 119 applicants in total. The appointments will run until September 2015.

MT BULLER’S world class snowmaking fleet sprung into action and b eg a n m a k i n g s n ow throughout the resort as soon as the right conditions prevailed. The Mountain Operations team had been on standby for several weeks in anticipation of favourable weather conditions which arrived just before the opening and then again on June 15. Mountain manager Matt Janney said he was thrilled to fire the guns up after temperatures dropped sufficiently. “At first we started up the guns on Baldy, Bourke St and Little Buller Spur and pumped four megalitres of water into snow for our first night of snowmaking,” Mr Janney said. “That was enough snow to fill more than three Olympic size
swimming pools. “It is just like Christmas in the snowmaking department at Mt Buller and we will stay on 24 hour call in preparation for additional snowmaking opportunities whenever we can,” Janney said. A further $400,000 was invested into Mt Buller’s world class snowmaking fleet this winter, leading to the completion of automated snowmaking on some of Mt Buller’s most popular terrain. Snowmaking supports more than 25 per cent of skiable terrain on the mountain, ensuring Mt Buller has more snow, more often. Mt Buller has been making snow at the resort since 1994 and continues to invest in the latest technology to deliver the best possible coverage across the resort.

“When I first came here to Mt Buller to learn a bit about the mountain, I found that the story of Mt Buller and Hans were intertwined - this is part of Hans, Lotte and the family’s life - but it is also something special as an Austrian, Helmut said. “When you come here as an Austrian you feel there is something of a recreation of a corner of Austria. “It is not something kitsche - it is something that is just not seen, but you can feel it - you feel it in the atmosphere, in the hospitality, in the charm and the humor that is inherent here. “The Declaration of Gold is a clear sign and token and gratitude of Austria to you Hans, Helmut said. “What you have done here is more than what you have been building up, not only a beautiful lodge and reminder of Austria - you present a picture and piece of Austria to Australians. “But you have also been building bridges in tourism, skiing - and the notion of skiing in Australia - and what we all share in this room - we like skiing and this is where Hans has been building bridges - and in hospitality. Helmut also pointed out that Hans had been instrumental in gaining contracts for the best chairlifts through Austria boosting the economic trade ties between the two countries. Hans had the honor of hosting his guests around the mountain on a short tour which included the Australian Alpine National Museum, which for the event had a special display of skiing history. It was then on to the Kaptan’s Restaurant for a celebratory dinner where family and friends gathered to congratulate Hans on his award. Lotte Grimus said the award is the Austrian equivalent of an Order of Australia Medal. Also visiting Mt Buller for the special occasion was fellow Austrian and friend of Hans, Wolf Blass - yes of the famous wines from South Australia.

CFA celebrates another year
MT BULLER CFA Brigade held its annual dinner and awards night during the first week of the ski season with two life memberships being awarded. Representing the CFA were District 23 operations manager Stewart Kreltszheim and his wife Cheryl, and operations manager Paul Horton and Victoria Police representative Sergeant Mark Ross. Organised by CFA member Ben Annear, the evening was held at The Cattleman’s with chefs producing a 10 course extravaganza dinner. Awards presented during the evening included: Life memberships to Mt Buller Fire Brigade: Andrew ‘Spook’ Kelly and Stephen ‘Dutchy’ Holland; Firefighter of the Year: Frank David; Most Improved: Nicki Donaldson; 10 Year certificate: Mark Woodsford. Mr Kreltszheim acknowledged the work of outgoing brigade captain Stuart Wadsworth and welcomed Ewan McCaskell into the role. He said during the formalities that Mt Buller brigade was looking very strong for another snow season. He explained that Mt Buller CFA brigade operates under ‘urban’ rules and therefore the night took on a little more formal agenda than other brigades might have done. The awards were presented after the formalities of several toasts and responses.

The Whitt rocked to kick off the season THE Whitt rocked loudly on opening night with its annual party to celebrate the beginning of the 2013 season. More than 300 members and guests aged from eight to 80 dined in the beautifully refurbished Whitt bar and dining room, listening to the acoustic tunes of Paddy Campbell. They then rocked the night away in the Dump Inn to hot DJ Georgia Sinclair and the very talented and funky Urban Playboys. General manager Charles Warren and his staff worked hard all night ensuring guests enjoyed delicious food from a new dining menu and an expanded range of beverages. SCV director and sponsorship coordinator John Dryden gave away thousands of dollars worth of prizes on the night. Michael J Ballingall, senior vice president of Big White Ski Resort, attended from Canada to present the major prize, a seven day ski package at Big White. Other prizes included numerous items of ski luggage from Auski, a car for the weekend from Patterson Cheney Mercedes Benz, Bumps grind tune and wax
vouchers, clothing and goggles, and Peninsula Hot Springs day spa vouchers. Members recovered the next morning at a barbecue on the Whitt sundeck serving kranskys with sauerkraut and minute steak with coleslaw. SCV president Suzie Batten said it was great to see the board’s plans to bring the club back to life starting to take shape. “The Whitt was absolutely rocking all night,” she said. “The feedback from party guests was very positive, with many saying they hadn’t seen the Whitt so full in a long time. “We had all ages on the dance floor and some of the club’s oldest members stayed until stumps, saying it was the best night they’d had in years.” The club wishes to acknowledge the support of its sponsors for this season, including Big White Ski Resort, Patterson Cheney Group, Silver Star Ski Resort, IBG Insurance Brokers, Lavazza, GANT, Auski, Mogul Ski World, Scotchman’s Hill, Bumps, Teska Carson, Reusch, Head, Peninsula Hot Springs and Ski City.

Local Mt Buller talent on the world stage By DYLAN CAMPBELL LAUREN and Cam Staveley and Declan Vogel-Paul are three teenagers with lives very different to the average school leaver. While most teens are studying for exams and planning their gap years, these three are competing in World Cup events while keeping their academic ambitions on track. The overriding thing that these three all have in common – they all call Mt Buller home when the snow is falling. Over the past 12 months,
Lauren, Cam and Declan have all proved their ambitions of making the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia aren’t just a pipe dream. All three placed in the top 20 on the World Cup circuit multiple times in the most recent Northern Hemisphere season, travelling and competing as part of the Transition Snowboarding team. They all joined local snowboarding program ‘Transition Snowboarding Camp’ in their early teens and have developed their snowboarding abilities into genuine Olympic
talent, travelling and training with TSC in Australia, New Zealand and the USA. They have continued to take on the best in the world, defeating snowboarding royalty in the process. Australian Slopestyle and TSC head coach Jarrod Wouters says “we’re really happy with the way Declan, Cam and Lauren have progressed in the past 12 months as part of the National Slopestyle team”. “The work ethic they possess, matched with their drive and ambition means they are on track for Olympic selection, something
the Mt Buller community can be extremely proud of.” Training in Breckenridge, Colorado with TSC over the Australian summer in between World Cup events has been an integral part of the Olympic selection process, training on snow six days a week to develop their winning runs. The competitive snowboard scene can be tough with every competitor pushing the boundaries and injuries become a regular occurrence, as Cam Staveley found out at the Junior World Titles in Turkey, when his knee had an uncomfortable
meeting with his face. He pushed through the injury, placing fourth and following up with a sixth at the World Cup event among the world’s best snowboarders in the Czech Republic less than seven days later. They now have several competitions and training camps in Australia and New Zealand ahead of them as part of their Olympic preparation. While they can’t always count on the snow gods in Australia, one thing they can count on is the support of the Mt Buller and Mansfield community.
FLYING HIGH: Lauren Staveley at home in the air during training at Breckenridge, Colorado over summer.
Resident police station keeping law and order at resort By LIZ WEBB VISITORS to the snow are often surprised to learn that Mt Buller has a fully operational police station, staffed each week by rotating crews from Mansfield and Benalla. Mt Buller police, like any small town law enforcers, are
involved in the usual general policing duties, however, the often harsh environment produces interesting challenges such as snow, extreme cold and lost people. Working closely with the Alpine Resort Management Board, Buller Ski Lifts, Ski Patrol, the Mansfield-Mt Buller Bus Lines
and the numerous venue operators, the mountain police officers’ working day varies from finding lost skiers, boarders and hikers, dealing with accidents on icy roads to over exuberant party goers. To be part of the ‘Snow Patrol’ Mt Buller police undergo special training in Map Reading
and Navigation, Snow Survival and 4Wheel and Snow Mobile driving. You’ll notice too, that Mt Buller police are a friendly and approachable group, always happy to talk to holiday makers, cheery when they visit venues and patient with some of their more tricky customers.

Tempting ‘Whitt’ menu offers something for everyone By LIZ WEBB
TEMPTING YOU: The Whitt Chefs (from left) Jacob Tuckett, Ben Brodie and Peter Grayson invite you to be tempted at The Whitt.
TANTALISING, creative and exciting, is how this winter’s Restaurant and Bar Menu at the Ski Club of Victoria is being described by happy diners. Created to complement the Whitt’s recently renovated, cozy and inviting atmosphere, the menu appeals to both intimate dining and large family groups. The Whitt Restaurant is creating fresh modern Australian style cooking with a European flair, with the kitchen sourcing as much fresh local produce as possible. Head chef Ben Brodie is back for a fourth season. Ben, a lover of the French way of life (he has lived and worked in French resorts and speaks fluent French), has run restaurants in London, Aix en Provence and the Caribbean. He trained at award winning Brisbane restaurants, Echo Bistro and Pier 9. He has most recently
concentrated on ‘high end’ event catering at venues such as the MCG and ‘Bird Cage’ at the Melbourne Cup. Ben is currently studying wine making and viticulture and has specifically developed some courses to complement the Whitt’s wine list. His focus is to use where possible, locally sourced fresh produce, creating mouth watering bistro food and classic desserts. Completing the team are chefs Peter Grayson, Jacob Tuckett and apprentice/kitchen hand Dean Savvas and Adam Wright. Peter, who’s been working in Brisbane’s ‘ happening’ café scene Continental Café, Cross Town Eating House and Cosi, loved Mt Buller so much last year that he’s back for season two. He spent the summer in Lismore, northern New South Wales working at the historic Eltham Hotel, where menus specialise in using locally farmed organic produce. Jacob Tuckett, another Queenslander, has worked mainly
on the Sunshine Coast, namely Conrad Jupiter’s Casino, the upmarket, Liquid Amber Restaurant/ micro brewery, 4th Floor Restaurant, Mooloolaba, as well as working as Tepanyaki chef at Murasaki, Gold Coast. Jacob has travelled and worked extensively in Europe and Thailand, loves surfing and has just tried snowboarding this opening weekend, and he’s hooked. Dean Savvas hails from Byron Bay where he started work at the Figtree, then more recently in Lismore under the head chef from Bill Granger’s Restaurant. Dean aspires to be a Patisserie Chef and Chocolatier and is also studying cheese making. Completing the team is kitchen hand Adam Wright who has also been employed up north and is keen to learn the workings of a busy kitchen. Chef Ben Brodie and his talented team have put together a menu that is already the ‘talk’ of the mountain, come and taste for yourself.

Aiming for Olympics
By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY TO Russia with Love was the message sent out loud and clear at the Olympic Winter Institute of Australian dinner held on Mt Buller on June 9 with up to 55 Australian athletes hoping to compete at the Russian Winter Olympic games. Two local athletes almost certain to get to those games are Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin and Anton Grimus. Pullin took out his second World Title in snow boarder cross earlier this year while Grimus placed third on the podium in his competition strengths. Both top athletes were among special guests at the fundraising dinner and to a packed audience outlined their aims for the Olympic challenges. 2014 Australian Olympic Winter Team Chef de Mission, Ian Chesterman, also made it clear that Australia was intending to make its presence known at Sochi (Russia) with an expected team of up to 55 athletes competing.

MT BULLER NEWS — June 28, 2013 — PAGE 15
News in brief ‘World Heli Challenge’ movie premiere
Boarding on Buller HI! Thanks to the Mt Buller News for having me back again this year. I hope everyone had a great summer or even better a northern winter. It was hit and miss this year depending on where you chose to go, so hopefully if you did head over you got in some great riding. By the sounds of it, if you were in Japan or Europe you had a cracker, Canada also had a good one. The US was hit and miss depending where and definitely when you went, but there was some great snow to be found. If you had a summer I hope you had a great one, and are amped to get back on the snow. Opening weekend from what I hear was festive as always, and the super keen enjoyed a patch of man-made snow on the ground. Early season it’s a great idea to keep fit down at the gym, and wax your
board frequently, manmade snow can be quite abrasive to your base. If you need a tune go see the crew at Grimus, Freeride or the man I trust with my board - Beezy at Black Mountain. While you are there why don’t you demo some new boards. Black Mountain has a good range of K2 and Ride boards to try, and is now stocking COAL headwear too if your head needs some good-looking warmth. Freeride also has lots of great boards to demo, and a great selection to buy. While you are splashing the cash at Freeride check out Buller’s own, Yuki Threads new range, you’ll definitely want one hoodie, maybe two. Have a great start to the season.
IN MEMORY: Officially renaming the bar at The Whitt to Ike’s Bar are (from left) Nigel Tait, club manager Charles Warren and club president, Suzie Batten.
‘Ike’s Bar’ to honor Maj Ivor Whittaker
THE Ski Club of Victoria announced on opening weekend the main bar at the Whitt would henceforth be known as “Ike’s Bar”, in memory of Major Ivor K Whittaker. Longstanding club member Nigel Tait unveiled a plaque to officially launch the new bar. Known as ‘Ike’, Ivor Whittaker was a keen Buller skier and SCV member who lost his life on active service in the Middle East. He requested in his will that provision be made for the SCV to build a lodge at Buller for the benefit of Victorian skiing. Ivor’s parents and trustees of his estate, Mr and Mrs Robert C Whittaker, agreed that their son’s wishes be honored and in May 1944 they granted the SCV £500 to erect a skiers’ retreat at Buller to be known as the Ivor Whittaker Memorial Lodge.
NAMESAKE: Ivor K Whittaker after whom the Ski Club Victoria’s refurbished bar has been named - Ike’s Bar.
The Whitt as it has been known since then is a popular venue on the mountain for both members and non-members and has grown since its inception.
Insurance can give you peace of mind on slopes
THE Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) is urging all skiers and snow boarders to consider taking out insurance before heading for the slopes. ICA chief executive officer Rob Whelan said insurance can provide you with the peace of mind you need to get the most out of your holiday. He said the right insurance can cover you if your equipment is damaged or stolen, or if you need to cut your holiday short due to unforeseen circumstances. People thinking about taking out insurance should speak to their insurer about what activities they are planning, where they are going, and understand what exclusions may apply. For those planning an overseas ski vacation, the ICA recommends you check you have enough travel insurance to cover lost items and baggage, flight delays and cancellations, and medical cover as costs can mount quickly. The ICA also recommends two useful websites to assist with a holiday checklist for policy holders and searching for the right insurance. Those sites are: www.insurancecouncil.com. au/for-consumers/consumer tips and www. findaninsurer.com.auww.

BULLER FUN: Rachel (Ratty) Sheidow returned home from New Zealand and loved the fresh snow awaiting her on Mt Buller’s higher slopes.
MT BULLER is to host the world premiere of the ‘World Heli Challenge - the Movie’ on July 1 at Pat's Italian Restaurant, Cow Camp, Mt Buller Village on July 1 at 8.30pm. Renowned snow cinematopgrapher, photographer, founder and director of the World Heli Challenge - and former Mt Buller resident - Tony 'Harro' Harrington returns to his beloved mountain this week for the premiere screening. “Young local skier, Mitch Reeves is one of our Junior Woold Heli Challenge Ambassadors, and long time snowboard instructor Rachel ‘Ratty’ Sheidow has competed in every event since 2009,” Harro said. Merrijig's Petri Miniotas is the film's editor and will be part of the official filming team at the 2013 World Heli Challenge in Wanaka later this year. Admission to the World Heli Challenge movie is free and an additional screening will be held at the Mt Buller cinema on Tuesday, July 2 at 7pm.

LOVE the heights of the mountains and views that seem to go forever in both winter and summer? Then this chalet ‘on top of the world’ at Mt Buller may be just what you are looking for. Canyon Chalet 7 overlooks Chamois run and Canyon Trail. This is one of a select group of chalets, and the only one with its own private garage. Situated at 69 Chamois Road, it is the largest of a small cluster of chalets and offers a large expanse of glass on four sides with views and privacy. IT’S on again. July 5 will see the popular Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day hit the slopes of Mt Buller and the greens of Mansfield Golf Course for its lucky 13th year. The day is always a fun gathering on the snow and the greens. The competition starts the night before the big event with a Calcutta at the ABOM on Mt Buller when teams will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. Mark Adams, organiser of the day, said the dinner is lots of fun with loads of bantering and some feisty bidding - all in all a good night. The competition in earnest then kicks off the next morning with a ski and snowboard race down Bourke Street (Mt Buller that is - not Melbourne) before teams head down the hill to Mansfield for lunch and the second stage - on the greens at Mansfield Golf Club. This event is a fantastic fundraiser for the local community generating well over $100,000 for local student ski programs in recent years. All money raised supports snow sports program for local kids.
