A PIVOTAL document outlining a strategic vision for the Falls Creek resort has been crafted on the back of a mountain of public consultation. ‘Pathway to the Future’ has been finalised and released to the public this month after a lengthy and extensive process, which Falls Creek Resort Management Board (RMB) chief executive officer (CEO) David Herman has hailed as being a resounding success to this point. He is confident the strategic vision will be the most inclusive document RMB has produced and will be a guide for the resort for the next five to 10 years.
“Falls Creek RMB was really committed to giving it a significant level of community consultation,” he said. In mid-May, RMB contacted about 250 stakeholders taking in Falls Creek and neighboring areas to garner thoughts, suggestions and ideas to make the ‘Pathway to the Future’ as comprehensive as possible. Mr Herman said the decision was taken to extend the consultation process over the opening weekend (June 8-10) because there were a lot of people coming to the resort with a strong connection to the place and it was important as many people could have a say if they desired to have input. At Falls Creek, the unique points of

difference provided a foundation for the strategic direction, including the village being the only ski-in-ski-out village, the country’s largest cross-country ski trail network and Rocky Valley Lake. When completed, the consultation phase attracted 35 formal submissions to be worked into the draft ‘Pathway to the Future’ plan and the feedback and comments were very encouraging. “We feel that’s a pretty good number and are pleased with receiving the feedback with a commitment to taking it on board,” Mr Herman said. He said the RMB, stakeholders and Falls Creek had made “huge strides in the last 12 months” and come together knowing the key to success in the fu-

ture was a collaborative approach. “It was essential for us everyone was on the same page and heading in the one direction,” Mr Herman said. ‘Pathway to the Future’ comes at a time when resorts need to ensure their planning can maximise the potential and the resorts can meet greater State Government scrutiny and the key parameters imposed to engender efficiencies within the industry. With Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, announcing the need for each resort to create a masterplan, Mr Herman said the ‘Pathway to the Future’ would complement the yet-to-be devised Falls Creek masterplan due in the next 12 to 18 months.

FALLS Creek opened its first lift of the 2013 season for skiing and snowboarding on June 16. Falls Creek Ski Lift general manager Francis Jackson said the snowfalls across the weekend along with the industrious snowmaking efforts by the team made the run opening possible and it was wonderful seeing guests enjoy some snowsports fun. The Mouse Trap Magic Carpet opened from 10am – 2pm on Sunday for beginner skiing and snowboarding and guests were provided with free transport by the Falls Creek Resort Management Board to the top of the hill at Cloud 9. From there they enjoyed first turns, group or private ski lessons, plus coffee or lunch at Cloud 9 restaurant. Kids took part in a heap of fun activities at the Renault Kids Club with a jumping castle, face painting and games, indoor and out on the snow, as well as three-legged races, Snocce (snow bocce) and garbage bag races planned. Following their exciting day in the snow, kids watched a movie down at QT Hotel in the heart of the village.

YOU don’t get much more extreme than this. Flown in by helicopter to the peak of a remote mountain, with kilometres of vertical, untracked descent, competing against some of the world’s best. It’s the kind of challenge Falls Creek skier Tom Costa has dreamed of, and will make a reality at the end of this month. The former World Cup mogulist will carry the hopes of his nation, again, in the World Heli Challenge in New Zealand.
Some 60 of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world will battle it out - all trying to pick the best line amid unforgiving back country terrain deep in the South Island’s wilderness. “I have wanted to give this type of event a crack for years and this year with the help of my sponsors, Central Snowsports and Deep Powder Tours, I am making it happen, Costa said. Born and raised at the base of Falls Creek, in Mt Beauty, Costa and his three brothers learnt to ski young - and fast. Adrian and Paul Costa represented Australia at the Winter Olympic Games
and Tom also competed for his country in freestyle on the World Cup circuit, and at two world championships. “I guess this freeskiing is just a natural progression, the 32 year old said. “I’ve had the opportunity to ski around the world and be exposed to some pretty extreme terrain..and I just love the challenge. But this is his first event. “It’s hard to say how I will fare, but I am definitely very excited about representing my home resort of Falls Creek, and you can bet I will be giving it my very best shot, he said.
“Obviously this sort of event is not easy to train for, especially in Australia, but the plan is to do as much backcountry skiing as possible and try to get comfortable in the big mountain arena. “Weather permitting, I hope to spend some time on Mt McKay with local skiing legend Steve Lee on his new backcountry tours. Peaks with 50 degree pitches, 80 to 100 foot drops, open bowls, deep snow and rocky chutes will test every ounce of Costa’s skill and endurance. Crashes and injuries are inherent risk. CONTINUED PAGE 12

Teen dies after fall from roof at resort A TEENAGE male died on Sunday, June 9, after sustaining fatal injuries in a fall from an apartment block roof at Hotham earlier that day. The news rocked those staying on mountain for opening weekend. Sergeant Martin Torpey, based at Hotham police station, said the 19-year-old, from Mangalore near Seymour, was staying in a room at Arlberg accommodation at the resort with up to a dozen mates for the weekend. Police believe he left the room via a window about 5.30am, slipped on the pitched Colorbond roof adjoining the room and fell 25 metres. He suffered severe head and internal injuries as a result. People staying at the apartment block heard a thud outside their room and eventually went to investigate. Police estimate the man was lying there for about 20 minutes before being discovered. An ambulance took the man to Mt Hotham Medical Centre, where staff worked on him for a number of hours in an attempt to stabilise his condition. At 10.30am he was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital, but he passed away at 6.50pm Sunday at the Alfred. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Some good advice from police ALTHOUGH visitors are in a relaxed mood on mountain, they need to take a number of precautions to ensure their trip is an enjoyable and safe one, according to local police. Bright police’s Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll said motorists need to keep cars locked and ensure no valuables are visible to passers-by, as opportunistic theft does happen at resorts. Sgt Incoll suggested splitting skis with friends as a way of deterring would-be thieves who might have their eye on gear, as well making sure everything is labelled and named. With winter well and truly here, it is imperative that drivers obey the speed limits, drive

Hotham Resort Management Board has instituted new regulations surrounding chains and only the diamond patterned variety can now be used legally. “These have been identified as being safer and more effective; this season is being seen
as an introductory period and learning opportunity for drivers but from next year, people will be penalised,” Sgt Incoll said. Police are also encouraging people not to indulge too heavily and take partying to a level where it could compromise your health. “Drugs, alcohol and snow don’t mix because of a number of reasons,” Sgt Incoll said. “You have to have your wits about you and you need to have the ability to remain calm

MAKING a phone call while you’re enjoying life on the Alpine peaks this winter won’t be anywhere near a hassle, as Telstra has raised the bar (s) thanks to stronger service. Telstra customers headed to the snowfields in Victoria for the opening of the 2013 ski season with 4G coverage, after Telstra switched on its super fast network in Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. Telstra Country Wide Area general manager for Northern Victoria and Sunraysia, Steve Tinker, said many Telstra customers have
if a whiteout sets in and these can happen out of the blue. “If you are intoxicated and get caught in the snow, hypothermia can set in quicker.” If trail walking is your thing, be sure to prepare a trip intention plan and give it to police or the accommodation venue owner of where you’re staying. An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a very wise investment and critical if you do get off course at any stage
and require assistance. “EPIRBs can be the difference between life and death and also make any search and rescue a lot easier,” he said. “Always let people know where you’re going and in a group situation, this could mean making a pre-determined time to meet at a certain place.” Skiers and boarders also need to be mindful of zipping up pockets when using ski lifts, as a surprising number of people lose wallets and mobile phones in the snow below. “They’re generally not found until the snow melts in spring or summer and by then they’re not in a good state,” he said.

Your LOCAL FREIGHT Common sense can prevent fires COMPANY for over 30 years PEOPLE heading to Victoria’s Alpine region for the ski season are encouraged to learn some fire safety tips and stay safe this winter. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said many people think CFA brigades wind down over the winter months, but Alpine brigades were gearing up for the annual tourism boom that comes with the ski season. “Most winter fires are preventable and are caused by dangerous mistakes such as overloading a power board or drying clothes too close to heaters,” Mr Wells said. “We want everyone to have a good time this winter. “No one wants their lodge or holiday accommodation to suffer fire. “The CFA has a couple of very simple precautions people need to take to ensure, what should be, a happy holiday does not turn into tragedy.” CFA officers were stationed at Hotham

and Falls Creek last month to help local brigades with emergency management and community liaison throughout the ski season. “These brigades are an integral part of the Alpine communities and our firefighters do an excellent job giving fire and emergency safety advice to residents and visitors in our alpine areas,” Mr Wells said. “Tens of thousands of people will be visiting our mountain resorts this winter, so I want to encourage holidaymakers, lodge owners and accommodation managers to chat to the brigade members about fire and emergency safety. Mr Wells said if you’re visiting the region and staying in a chalet or holiday accommodation, know the exit routes and escape plan. “If you’re returning from the slopes with wet clothes, don’t leave them drying on a heater because there could be disastrous consequences,” he said.
FIRE SAFETY TIPS:
z never leave cooking, heaters, open fires or candles unattended; z don’t overload power boards; z keep electrical appliances in good working order z Dry clothing at least one; metre away from heaters; z clean lint filters on clothes dryers after every use and always let dryers complete the cool-down cycle; z store all matches and lighters out of reach of children; z clean and test your smoke alarms regularly and make sure they are working; z iInstall a fire extinguisher and fire blanket and know how to use them; z have a fire escape plan and practice it regularly.

State support for major ski events at Falls Creek in August ski and ski board hub and a mustsee tourist destination,” Mr Smith said. “As well as showcasing some of Australia’s up and coming ski talent, these events are a boon for the local regional economies, attracting large crowds.” Mr Delahunty said the Coalition Government was committed to maintaining, developing and attracting top sporting events and athletes to the state. “With the next Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia less than a year away these elite ski events provide the perfect platform for aspiring world champions to impress for national team selection and follow in the footsteps
of Victorian ski legends such as 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics champion Lydia Lassila,” Mr Delahunty said. Mr Delahunty said the funding package would also assist event organisers Ski and Snowboard Australia to develop a 3-5 year event plan and marketing strategy to secure even more major international and national events for Victoria’s ski fields. Ski & Snowboard Australia chief executive officer, Michael Kennedy, said Victoria had a proud tradition of hosting worldclass events, none more so than the World Cup Aerial events which ran at Mt Buller for a decade from 1997.
“Ski & Snowboard Australia is delighted that the Victorian Coalition Government has recognised the potential of our current winter event series and we look forward to working with them to develop a long-term strategy for world-class winter events into the future,” Mr Kennedy said. “The new Olympic disciplines in particular offer excellent opportunities for our resorts, as the infrastructure required is within the scope of our resorts’ current capacities. “There is no reason why Victorian resorts including Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham can’t be World Cup venues in the years to come.”

TOURISM North East will introduce a marketing campaign to promote the new region-wide digital platform, which encompasses a series of destination websites, courtesy of State Government funding. Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) made the $50,000 funding announcement last month. As well as the marketing campaign, a media and marketing kit will be developed for the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing walk in the hope of attracting greater visitation from interstate and intrastate markets to the region. “Victoria’s High Country is famous for its rich culinary experiences, such as cooking schools and ‘meet the winemaker’ programs, as well as for winter skiing, summer walking and cycling trails and of course, spectacular scenery,” Mr Sykes said. “The region is also renowned for its national parks and pristine rivers and lakes. Mr Sykes said the websites would allow visitors to interact online via social media channels while holidaying in the region. “Consumer behavior in accessing tourism information and promotion has changed dramatically and the increased use of digital media has meant there is a need to incorporate this activity into marketing campaigns,” he said. Tourism North East will work with Tourism Victoria to develop and implement these projects. Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said the funding is part of the Coalition Government’s $350,000 Regional Cooperative Marketing Innovation Fund to generate more opportunities for regional tourism.

Bill Sykes (MLA,Benalla) visited with the DP Bike Club, the community and retailers and then officially opened the 2013 snow season to a good crowd. There was also a Kids Zone area, where the smaller members of the family could have fun on the jumping castle or have their face painted. The clear Sunday night sky was lit up with an amazing fireworks display which finished off Dinner Plain’s gourmet
celebration of winter. Although there was no snow, business operators have reported the weekend was a huge success and accommodation providers have indicated bookings are a little up on last year’s.

New boards to oversee alpine resorts
A NUMBER of new appointments to key positions in the alpine resort industry were made public prior to the 2013 opening weekend. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith announced new appointments to Victoria’s Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council and the five Alpine Resorts Management Boards.
There were seven new appointments, four new chairs, and 14 members that had been reappointed to the state’s alpine boards. The appointments were chosen after an expression of interest and interview process earlier this year and will run until September 2015. Mr Smith described the calibre of applicants as “very high” and noted
their passion and expertise to oversee management of the resorts. He said the new appointments would bring fresh ideas and innovation while building on the good work of the current members. “I welcome Michael Marasco as the new chair of the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council who will be responsible for driving the implementa-

Mr Smith said the alpine resorts were “special and unique places” and important to the state’s economy and tourism industry. Swan (new), Leigh Phillips Falls Creek Resort Management Board – chair Mark Anderson, Roger Kilby, Stacey Daniel Mt Hotham Resort Management Board - chair Deborah Spring (new appointment), deputy chair Ronald Mason (new appointment), Timothy Piper, Nicole Feeney, Peter Hagenauer (new).
HELPING HAND: THE skies were clear at the Alpine resorts, but at ground level snowmaking was on in earnest at Falls Creek and Hotham across the long weekend. At Falls Creek, the snowmaking guns were firing on Wombats Ramble, Drovers Dream, Panorama, Mouse Trap, Boardwalk, Main Street, the Nastar course, Highway 83, Scottys, Ruined Castle, Father Fosters, the Ruined Castle Terrain Parks, Panorama Progression Park, the Pete Train, and in the Junior Workshop area.
FALLS Creek Medical Centre is raring to go, the staff just have to wait for the snow. The centre has a new intern at their practice. First year intern, Sean Warfe, has joined the team for the season and will be spending his time between Mt Beauty and Falls Creek. The Falls Creek Medical Centre have five doctors on rotation throughout the season. Doctors Jeff Robinson, Angela Stratton, Dominic Blanks, Mark Zagorski and Laura Zagorski are on hand to help with all your medical needs. The centre is open daily from 10am-12.30pm and 2pm – 5pm, and for after hours care call (03) 5758 3238 or email @ enquiries@ mbmc.com.au.
Dr Zagorski graces the white pages available to this region are second-to-none and we are all working hard to ensure they keep improving,” he said. An avid skier, one of his most innovative medical achievements occurred in 2008 when, concerned by the number of back injuries sustained by ski patrol staff, he developed an electric hoist to move patients from ski patrol sleds to hospital beds with the touch of a button. The device has proven effective locally and has sparked interest from interstate and international ski resorts.

DR Mark Zagorski, a Mount Beauty resident who has devoted 30 years to improving medical care and first aid in the Alpine region, has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Wangaratta White Pages® and Yellow Pages® book. Since moving to the region in 1981, Dr Zagorski has played a major role in developing state-of-the-art medical facilities at the local hospital and medical centres, ensuring they’re more responsive to typical Alpine injuries while also meeting the needs of locals. He has also voluntarily trained local ski patrols, teaching them how to best treat common alpine injuries such as fractures, dislocations and serious trauma. “The medical services

Interest in Dinner Plain, Mt Hotham THE real estate market at Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham has been quite resilient, however, the bushfires that effectively closed the Great Alpine Road for approximately four months to the general public has created a reduction in the number of sales. For example, in the 12 month period that ended June 2011 a total of 30 sales were transacted at Dinner Plain. In the 12 month period ending June 2012 there were 35 sales, however, for the current period ending June this year, there have only been 15 sales and this is a direct result of the road being closed
in our strong selling period. The sales at Mt Hotham have very closely followed the total number of sales that have occurred at Dinner Plain and therefore it can be seen that under normal circumstances there are about 50-60 sales per year between both resorts. The strongest part of the market have been properties in the bracket of $200,000 - $500,000 and these generally include well presented apartments and freestanding cabins. The median sale price of smaller freestanding cabins and apartments is approximately $280,000, with three and four bedroom properties’ median sales of approximately $500,000. Vacant allotments at Dinner Plain now sell in the order of $65,000 - $120,000 depending
upon size and orientation. Land prices have lifted themselves from the doldrums of 18 months ago where land was selling from $35,000 - $45,000 but there has now been almost a 100 per cent increase in the sale price of land. Significant transactions that have occurred in the Dinner Plain/Mt Hotham area include High Plains Lodge which was sold last year and is now tenanted by the lift company for key personnel during the winter months and this constitutes some 18 rooms with the guys from the General Store taking over the food and beverage areas of the lodge. There is little doubt this is a new and significant tourism feature to Dinner Plain and has been very well received.
