Holden Colorado gets worthwhile upgrade H olden Colorado 7 has been upgraded by the fitment of an improved version of its turbodiesel engine, now tagged the Duramax 2, mated to a new six-speed manual gearbox. There’s also an all-new app-enabled infotainment system and several added safety features. The 2.8-litre diesel generates 147 kW of power and an impressive maximum of 500 Nm of torque. The engineers tell us that torque has

been increased across the rev range. Automatic transmission calibration has been improved and now includes shift stabilisation in uphill and downhill modes. Grade braking control preventing unnecessary shifting between gears when travelling uphill, and suitable shifting when travelling downhill to minimise the need for braking by the driver. When teamed with the new six-speed
manual transmission, the Duramax 2 engine still produces 147 kW of power, but torque has been derated to 440Nm. A seven-inch color touchscreen is now standard on all models in the Colorado 7 range. Holden’s MyLink allows drivers to connect by Bluetooth and access apps for music, news, entertainment and navigation. Embedded apps include Pandora, Stitcher and TuneInTM. Bluetooth can be used to wirelessly
stream audio files for playback from a paired smartphone, as well as giving access to 1000 contacts and missed or recent call history. Holden Colorado 7 owners can also access BringGo, a navigation app with 3D maps, turn-by-turn directions, points of interest, and emergency contacts. BringGo does not require a 3G connection unless it’s performing a Google places search.

Holden Colorado gets worthwhile upgrade „ From page 1 Apple iPhone users can use Siri to select and play music, hear and compose text messages, read notifications and add reminders. Holden’s new chassis control systems see Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist and Descent Control System fitted across the complete Colorado 7 range. Trailer Sway control detects any towing instability and activates the brakes and reduces engine torque to try and pull the rig back under control again. Holden Colorado 7 has a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Crash prevention and mitigation items are Electronic Stability Control, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Hydraulic Brake Assist. The 2014 Colorado 7 now has front side airbags as standard in all LX, LT and LTZ models. There’s Rear Park Assist and a rear camera. It contains a fair bit of Australian input on the engineering side, particularly in chassis dynamics, on-road and offroad, so is good to drive. We haven’t yet had the chance to review this upgraded model, but will do so and bring the results to you as soon as possible. Despite the improvements the prices of the 2014 Holden Colorado remain the same as on the outgoing model, $46,990 for the LT and $50,490 for the LTZ, both with automatic transmission. Corolla remains country’s best-selling car T
oyota sold 72 per cent more vehicles than any other carmaker in Australia last month as Corolla strengthened its lead as the country's best-selling car. Dealers representing the market-leading Toyota brand delivered in excess of 18,100 vehicles to customers in October compared with just over 10,500 for its nearest rival.
Toyota's result was led by the evergreen Corolla, which has topped the national sales chart since May. Corolla has exceeded 3000 sales for each of the past nine months, stretching its lead as Australia's best-selling car this year to more than 1500 registrations. Toyota had three of the top six best-selling vehicles in October with strong performances from
HiLux (3172 sales) and the locally built Camry (2251). Other Toyota vehicles to lead their segments for the month were the 86 sports car, LandCruiser 200 series SUV, HiAce van and HiAce bus. RAV4 had its best October on record. Last month's results lifted Toyota's overall tally so far this year beyond 176,900 deliveries. No other company has reached 100,000 sales in 2013.
Toyota also widened the gap over the second-placed brand to a remarkable 84,500 deliveries compared with a margin of 82,111 at the same stage last year. The company's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said Toyota was set to record its 11th consecutive year of market leadership - a winning streak that has not been achieved by any carmaker in more than 30 years.

centre armrest with dual drink holders and good leg room as long as the front seat passengers aren’t overly tall. The cargo area is usable for the weekly shopping or a couple of medium-size suitcases and the Trax has a 60/40 split rear seat that gives good versatility. The 1.8-litre engine was first used by Holden in the model year 2014 Cruze – Holden’s small four door sedan entry-level car. The engine develops 103 kW at 6300 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm. Combined fuel consumption is officially 7.6 litres/100 km from the engine with auto combination, which is exactly what we managed during our week-long test. Holden is now including IsoFix child seat restraint anchors across all new models and the Trax gets these. Trax comes with an Australasian NCAP five-star safety rating. Safety features include six airbags, rear view camera, rear parking sensors, stability control, ABS brakes, EBD, BA and ESP traction control. Holden is always good at tuning its cars for Australian conditions. Some of our roads are more third-world than developed world and suspension and damping settings can make a huge difference to ride and comfort levels for passengers. So the Trax underwent extensive testing and development for Australian roads and this shows in the ride and comfort levels, particularly over corrugated and pot-holed roads. It sits well on the roads and the suspension soaks up the hits, unlike, for example, the new Nissan Juke which has suspension that is simply harsh on our worst roads. Trax is not the quickest car in the segment. The 1.8-litre four cylinder petrol is adequate in that it had no trouble matching the traffic around it, but it will not break any speed records. The six-speed auto is a bit pedestrian between shifts and when pushed the engine noise infiltrates the cabin. When cruising the system is quiet enough.

satellite navigation, music libraries, radio stations – a raft of mobile telephone apps that run through the car’s screen. Some Gen-Ys may even buy the car because of the embedded technology rather than focusing on performance or styling. That’s the changing face of buyer needs and wants. Though it does minimise driver inattention to some extent, the dangers still exist of drivers not concentrating on what they should be doing when behind the wheel - driving. The compact SUV segment has a range of designs from boring to brilliant with Trax sitting to the right of centre as a well-styled SUV that exudes some style. While somewhat understated compared to out-there Nissan Juke, but artistic alongside the likes of Nissan’s other small SUV, Dualis and many others in the class. The GM Trax has styling cues that break up the boxy design with muscular treatments where they make a difference to eye appeal, namely the mudguards, bonnet and rear quarter panels. Trax has the Holden `family’ grille, which is prominent and has a shape that lends itself to an SUV. A feature of the Trax profile is the swept roofline – a design that nears perfection on Range Rover’s Evoque SUV. The other factor that young families like are highseating position, not just for driving, but for ease of placing priceless cargo into capsules and baby seats. The interior of Holden Trax is basic although the layout is fine and some of the design makes it interesting – like the prominent air conditioning vents on either side of the dash that protrude like Porsche 911 headlamps. The dash centre is dominated by the 7-inch screen that supports the MyLink system. But, the overall feel is of cheap grey plastics, even though the design and layout is functional. The driving position delivers good viewing and no one could complain about seat comfort. The rear pew is not bad either although better suited to two adults than three. There’s a fold down
