A BUMPER crowd of more than 500 people packed into the Mt Buller Village Square on Saturday night to see Jye Kearney win his second Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam title.

Buller Ski Lifts general manager, Laurie Blampied said Mt Buller was proud to host the annual Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam, the premier event on the Australian snowboarding calendar.

“We were thrilled to see such a big crowd turn out and we look forward to welcoming the countries best snowboarders back to Mt Buller in 2014.”

Kearney pocketed a $4000 cheque, sealing victory ahead of second placed Cohen Davies and Mt Buller local Cameron Staveley in third place.

Kearney’s experience in the event certainly showed as he worked methodically to impress the judges with

his famously casual style, consistent makes, and solid creative use of the entire staircase.

“It’s so nice to be back on the podium after my summer off with injury,” Kearney said as he clutched his prize winning cheque.

“Cattleman’s continues to be my favorite event of the year.”

With one of the most recognisable styles in Australian snowboarding, Cohen Davies worked through the night with consistent spins in and out of all three down rails, as well as nailing a showstopping 50-50 gap to backside lipslide from the top close-out rail.

Mt Buller local Cameron Staveley was also impressive, taking out third spot with a awless display of classic tricks.

Staveley was also the only competitor to 50-50 through the kink, a super technical manoeuver only a few each year accomplish.

Staveley comes from a

family of talented snowboarders and after competing at the Cattleman’s ew to Whistler (Canada) on Sunday morning with older sister Lauren for a 2014 Winter Olympics training camp.

At just 13 years of age younger brother Luke also competed in Saturday night’s event and can look forward to a very bright future in professional snowboarding.

Policy, strategy high on agenda

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY A NEW industry advisory group, the Alpine Resorts Industry Advisory Group (ARIAG), to work with the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council, Government and agencies has been established.

The AIRG will provide valuable input into policy, strategic planning, management, development, use and promotion at the alpine resorts, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith said. “The group includes representation by lift companies, chambers of commerce, local councils, regional tourism boards and key user groups,� Mr Smith said.

Members of the ARIAG include Nick Whitby, CEO of Buller Ski Lifts, Helen Moran, Midway Division Merling Entertainments Group, Graham Park, Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, David Risby, Alpine Resorts Working Group, Ian

Nicholls, Alpine Shire Cuncil, Helen Antsis, Baw Baw Shire Council, Paul Carrick, Tourism North East Board, Eric Bickerton, Disabled WinterSport Australia and Adam Joyce, Snorsports Industries of Australia.

Mr Smith also said good progress was being made to deliver on the actions set out in the Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan 2012.

Mr Smith said the new alpine resort master plans, released recently, would be developed by each resort over the coming 12 to 18 months.

These will include precinct development plans, infrastructure plans, ďŹ re and emergency management plans and native vegetation provisions.

The plan is the result of an extensive consultation process run by the ARCC. A total of 250 people attended workshops in Melbourne and at each alpine resort, and 66 submission were received.

The plan outlines six strategic objectives:

Mr Smith said figures released on the 2012 winter season were the highest since 2004 and up over 20 per cent compared to the 2011 winter season and 14 per cent compared to the 10 year average.

A total of 771,000 visitors and 1,502,000 visitor

days were recorded.

The latest data shows that more than one million people visit Victoria’s alpine resorts annually.

Last winter alone the resorts generated $647 million in gross state product and created around 6000 jobs.

The number of skier days remained relatively constant at approximately 70 per cent of visitor days since 2000.

‘SASKI’ - the name conjures up visions of snowy Scandinavian scenes, but in reality it is hundreds of South Australians who just love coming to Mt Buller for snow sports.

Pembroke School is one of the most dedicated supporters of the SASKI program and this year celebrated its 10th Snowsports trip to Mt Buller.

Trip coordinator Mike Howard said they

have tried school trips at Hotham, but ďŹ nd that Mt Buller is better. “We ski out from the Whitt each morning and everything we need is located close to us, and most importantly, mountain wise, it’s harder for the kids to get lost,â€? he said.

Mr Howard has been organising the snow trip since 2002 and commented that this year is their biggest contingent ever - some 57 students and 11 staff.

Adventurous chef cooks outside box

By LIZ WEBB SUCCESSFUL restaurants need to create a niche for themselves, providing great quality food that differentiates them from their competitors.

Luckily, for the small

number of boutique restaurants on Mt Buller, the menu choice is varied and exciting.

Breathtaker All Suite Hotel’s ‘Signature’ restaurant is creating a sought after niche menu for food lovers and its all due to

head chef Darryl Zeitzen who has returned for his second year.

The emphasis this year at the Signature Restaurant is modern Australian with a European, more specifically, regional Italian influence (think Tuscany).

Darryl is an adventurous chef who loves having fun with ‘specials’, cooking winter game – venison, slow cooked wild boar leg, hare, guinea fowl and soon he will be introducing crocodile.

For the less daring, The Signature Restaurant and the team are well-known for mouthwatering simple pork and chicken dishes as well as the finest cuts of Tasmanian scotch eye fillet and ‘9score’ wagyu steak.

by the abundance of premium quality fresh food that Tasmania produces.

He loves Mt Buller in winter and spends his summers travelling and working around the world.

He was most recently at

Hamilton Island, and has worked at a number of golf resorts in Scotland, Jersey and France.

Personally, his favorite menu item is the crispy skin baked salmon served with a vegetable caponata,

home made basil pesto and crispy olive flat bread – fresh and light.

It seems a couple of visits will be required this season to really experience the delights of the the Signature Restaurant.

MANSFIELD Mt Buller Regional Tourism Association (MMBRTA) has partnered with Tourism North East and neighboring destinations to launch 18 new, integrated websites as part of the North East Regional Digital Platform (RDP).

The upgraded site will provide an inspirational online experience for visitors, plus greater functionality and marketing reach for business operators.

“With the launch of the RDP, we’ve restructured how business operators can partner with us,” said MMBRTA manager Julie Kukainis.

A wonderful break for cancer patients A GROUP of 55 young people received a much needed break from the daily stresses and strains of living with cancer at Mt Buller recently as part of the annual ďŹ ve day CanTeen Winter Program.

CanTeen’s free programs are made possible by donations as well as the support of companies like Buller Ski Lifts. “Every year another 23,000 young people have to face the challenge of dealing with cancer

– whether they’ve been diagnosed themselves or whether it’s their parent, brother or sister,� Victorian division manager at CanTeen Deborah Anderson said. “A cancer diagnosis threatens the security of a young person’s world, leaving them feeling vulnerable, frightened and confused. “Attending a CanTeen program gives our members the chance to meet other young people who truly understand what they’re going

through while also having some fun. “That’s why we’re so grateful for every generous donation we receive from Victorians and our corporate supporters - it wouldn’t be possible without them.�

New regulations for controlling deer an Authority to Control Wildlife (ATCW), or if they engaged licensed deer hunters,� Mr Walsh said. “This administrative burden often delayed control and the new order removes that burden.�

The new Order also allows landowners to use a spotlight at night to destroy problem deer, which is proven to be a very effective means of control.

Sambar Deer, Fallow Deer, Red Deer (including Wapiti), Sika Deer - Red

Deer hybrids, Rusa Deer and Chital Deer are covered under the order.

Hog Deer are not included due to their limited range and susceptibility to hunting, so an ATCW will still be required to control them on private property.

Mr Walsh said deer can only be destroyed using specified firearm calibres and minimum bullet weights with an appropriate licence. “Only landowners on their own properties, their managers, permanent em-

ployees or agents are able to destroy problem deer under this Order. “Anyone other than the landowner destroying deer on a property must carry written permission signed and dated by the landowner of that property.�

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh said a new order introduced under the Victorian Wildlife Act 1975 clears the way for removing problem deer on private properties. “Previously, deer causing damage on private property could only be destroyed if landowners applied for and received

SNOW from Mt Buller will fall in Melbourne next month.

The Mt Buller Snow Festival will be in Ashburton on Saturday, August 3 from 10am to 2pm.

Now in it’s sixth year, the festival sees snow trucked down to the Melbourne to create a small toboggan run which is then supervised by the Buller crew.

The Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) marketing team shovel the snow into place, before answering all the usual questions that first time snow visitors ask.

The Ashburton Traders Association president, Bob Stensholt said the event gave people a new perspective of winter.

“Generally winter is unpredictable and people don’t venture out much due to the cold weather, but the Mt Buller Snow Festival day has become a real favorite in Ashburton and if it rains, it just adds to the wintery atmosphere,” he said.

“Hundreds of families visit the street so that their kids can have a toboggan ride, build a snowman, throw the odd snowball and generally enjoy the touch and feel of real snow.”

Ashburton traders get into the spirit of the day putting up Mt Buller posters, decorating windows with snowflakes and displaying kids coloring competition entries, all helping to create the feeling of life in the snow.

Mt Buller’s Blake the Flake and the Medibank Icehouse Skater Dude and Frosty the Snowman entertain the crowds and there are plenty of giveaways – stickers, lollies, Buller information and much more this year including a street full of snowflakes.

Visitors to the Ashburton snow field can win a two day mid-week holiday at Mt Buller with lift tickets, lessons and equipment hire provided by Mt Buller and accommodation for two adults and two children provided by the Ski Club of Victoria Mt Buller, the winner is drawn on the day.

GET your cameras ready, Mt Buller’s annual Peak Pics photography competition will continue through until Setpember 14.

Each year an amazing range of talented photographers submit their incredible shots.

Run in conjunction with the Mt Buller Film Festival, Peak Pics celebrates mountain enthusiasts engaged in awe inspiring activities.

Special treat for the kids MT Buller will celebrate a white Christmas again this year as the popular Christmas Week celebrations return to the mountain on August 3-9.

There will be plenty of Christmas cheer and special events all week – plus special appearances from Santa.

All week the Mt Buller Village will be alive with festive spirit, and a range of special events and activities giving visitors the chance to experience something different for Australia – a white Christmas.

Kids will love the appearances by Santa, Christmas present lucky dips and snowman building competition, while everyone can indulge in Christmas dinners with all

the trimmings, caroling, a lantern ski run down Bourke Street and more.

MANY of Australia’s best snowboarders have launched their careers at at the Cattleman’s Rail Jam and this year was no exception as some of Australia’s best battled it out for the eighth year in a row - among them 17 year old local Harry Green.

Growing up in Mansfield, Harry has trained with the weekend and holiday program Transition Snowboarding.

Harry acquired skills from some of the best snowboard coaches in Australia along with opportunities to travel with the team to such places as New Zealand and Breckenrige Colorado to train.

He has become one of Australia’s best up and

coming stars, recently securing sponsorship with major brands such as Anon Analog and K2.

This was going to be Harry’s first pro open event as a fully sponsored rider if he could make finals.

Missing the cut last year Harry was eager to make it through the qualifying rounds.

He made it through the qualifying into semis and was listed in the 14 man open men’s final.

On the night Harry rode superbly and put down nearly every trick he tried and was able to hold his own against the nation’s best, finishing in the top five.

Look out for Harry at Mt Buller as he trains and juggles his snowboarding with year 11 studies as well as completing an industry based apprenticeship with the Transition Snowboarding Program.

What started as a quiet dinner for a group of six ladies some five years ago has turned into a party for 70 with The Whitt’s mountain talent “Paddy” getting them all up and dancing the night away.

Suzanne Rumble, Sandra Maier and Sonia Clark who organised the evening were thrilled with the night and have had lots of positive feedback.

“We would like to acknowledge Altitude and Buller Ski Lifts for their generous donations of wonderful door prizes, Cheryl from Paint Me! Paint Me! for her balloon creations and glitter tattoos also Andrea Ritchie for all the wonderful photos,” Ms Rumble said.

“We see this night in the July school holidays as a great way to get all the girls on the hill out.”

The organisers are also looking to make this a charitable event in the future.

Celebrating 25 years MT Buller Race Club with its 180 young athletes, 30 masters, 30 coaches and administration program staff, recently celebrated 25 years on the mountain.

As well as celebrating this milestone the fundraiser party was also specifically geared to funding race training equipment that

coaches need for use on the hill; tools of the trade - a never ending upgrade, replacement and new training equipment requirement.

At interschool level MBRC represents 49 per cent of top 10 results across all disciplines and age categories.

At state and national

championships MBRC continually sees athletes owning the podium.

At International level MBRC stands to have seven athletes from Mt Buller at Sochi 2014 Olympics; all are currently on the shadow Olympic team and are in the running for formal qualification.

In the 1970s, the first snurfing competitions were organised.

The Flying Yellow Banana was developed in 1977.

This was just a plastic shell covered with a surface similar to a skateboard, but at the time it was a major step in snowboarding.

Then thanks to snowboard design pioneers such as Dimitrijie Milovich (Winterstick), Jake Burton (Burton Snowboards), and Tom Sims (Sims Snowboards) we get to ride the awesome equipment that we do today.

In 2000, snowboarding was the fastest-growing sport in the US, with riders and enthusiasts numbering to a total of just over 7.2 million.

It’s funny to think that snowboarders were once the grungy unappreciated members of the snow society.

We are now a huge presence that brought life and interest back into the snow industry, and helped spark a revolution in skiing.

Memorial ski event for Tom FIS accredited ski racers will line up to compete from august 6 to 8 in the annual Tom Mathias Memorial Races.

The races are the first on the 2012 International circuit to take place in the southern hemisphere and have been named in memory of Tom Mathias who tragically died from melanoma at 23 years of age in 2009.

His friends and supporters honor his memory and passion for snowsports this year in the Tom Mathias races and the foundation created in his name - i ski for tommy or “isft.�

The isft program is endorsed by the Alfed Hospital and aims to educate the snow community about the dangers of melanoma and raise funds for the Victorian Melanoma Service [VMS].

AS I write this, it has been a week of challenging weather conditions.

We are expecting this to turn to snow on Saturday before this goes to print, so fingers crossed.

Although it’s depressing to see it rain, good things are worth waiting for.

Snowboarding is fun, and a great way of life.

Let’s appreciate snowboarding with a little history on the sport that has drawn most of us here to Mt Buller.

Snowboarding goes back to the 1920s.

This is older than many of us would have thought.

In 1929, a Utah man M.J. Burchett created what many believe to be one of the first snowboards.

Burchett cut a plywood plank into a rideable board and used both horse reins and clotheslines to secure his feet.

Burchett recieved a lot of respect for his efforts to pioneer snowboarding.

In the 60’s Sherman Poppen was an engineer looking for a new toy to give to his daughter when he invented what would become known as the “snurfer.�

Poppen’s original snurfer was made by fastening two skis together and attaching a

A stirling experience camping in the snow

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY CAMPING out in the open is an adventure and holiday fun that many thoroughly enjoy during the warm summer months.

But for the hardy adventurers the experience of camping in the snow is also very special.

Throughout the snow season Mt Stirling offers visitors the chance to do just that - camp in the snow up at the spot they call “the cricket pitch”.

The camp can accommodate up to 28 people at a time and is popular with school groups.

A teepee is the central focal point of the camp which hosts a pot belly stove for heating, cooking and even hot water.

This snow camping is so popular that Stirling Experience operator Craig Jones said the camp site is booked out from now until the end of August.

“Mid-week we have school groups coming up and even if there is no snow then we take them out bushwalking, mountain biking and can even organise horse rides for them,” Craig said.

“Last week we even took a group of school kids across to Mt Buller as Bourke Street was the only place which had any decent snow for them to try skiing on.”

Craig said families love coming to the snow for the camping experience over weekends.

“We had a family that came up recently with a 10 month old baby and the mother asked to be instructed on skiing first and then put the baby in a backpack arrangement and skied with the baby - a first for me to see,” he said.

The camp site is comfortable, has toilet facilities and is basically self catered - however Stirling Experience can arrange catering as well.

By LIZ WEBB THE ďŹ rst Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) race for 2013, on July 13 on skyline, attracted a record crowd of 74 racers.

From eight years to nearly 80, racers of all ages hit the slopes recording personal bests and breaking club records.

This week Anja Bjarnason, who races in the Race Club category, was awarded a special prize of a full ski tune from Bumps for her fantastic effort – second fastest time off scratch for the day.

A very festive looking and lively race presentation took place in the Dump Inn. Prizes included two sets of skis – Auski Head Skis for the fastest male off Handicap, Matt Fitton and Bumps Skis for the fastest boy or girl off scratch in the under 13 category, winner Tori Hill was pleasantly surprised.

All young racers were delighted with their encouragement awards of special Ty Beanie Balls from Tony Oates at Big Balloon.

A pair of skis (And many more great prizes) will be awarded each week during the season.

Racing is one of the main reasons that the SCV was established in 1924 and the tradition is growing stronger. Many of our 2014 Olympic hopefuls started their racing careers in the SCV races.
