Visitor numbers steady
VISITOR numbers to Mt Buller are holding steady according to the latest Victorian Alpine Resorts entry statistics released by the ARCCC. In the weekend ending Sunday, July 28, Mt Buller had 22,280 visitors in the one week - an increase of some eight per cent from the same week last year.
And it appears that many stayed longer than just one day as the figures for vistor days for the week also rose - this time by 12 per cent. However, year to date figures over the whole of the season are down by some five per cent, mainly attributed to poorer snow conditions.
Last year at this time in the season some 125,576 visitors had passed through the gates compared to 111,962 this season. Mt Stirling visitor numbers were down slightly with 544 recorded in the one week and a drop of 25 percent over the whole season compared to last year.
Across all resorts numbers are up by six per cent for the week, but the year to date figures show a decline of some 19 per cent. Overall Mt Buller is still faring the best of all the state’s snow resorts with figures almost doubling those of other resorts such as Mt Hotham and Falls Creek.

CARMEN Lo is enjoying her second winter on the mountain working at George’s Ski Hire and she has become an important part of the GSH team. She always meets and greets people coming into the shop with great enthusiasm. Carmen came to Mt Buller for the snow - especially the stunning sunset views from the Summit, and its geographic location nearest to Melbourne in comparison to other snow mountains in Australia. She enjoys snowboarding and meeting people, having a few ‘frothies’ in the pub after work and dancing with friends. Carmen’s favorite place on the mountain is her work place where every moment with workmates and customers gives her lots of happy memories, as well as the loved ones she has met on the mountain and will spend her life with. She takes pride in her work and is always presentable when greeting customers with a friendly smile. Carmen won two return bus tickets to Mansfield as her reward donated by MMBL.
MATILDA McConnell’s first season in the snow working at the popular Burger Haus. She was attracted to the mountain because of the friendly and laid back atmosphere of the resort. Matilda enjoys meeting new people every day and says her favorite place on the mountain is also her workplace where she sees new faces everyday. People on the mountain will remember Matilda for her friendly and outgoing attitude. Matilda won a dinner voucher at the Duck Inn for her reward of being a great employee - donated by Duck Inn.
Have your say on new DPI proposals PUBLIC comment is invited on new regulations governing the use of the state’s national parks. Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) executive director, Peter Beaumont, said the National Parks Regulations were primarily a tool for enabling people to access parks in accordance with the National Parks Act. “The current regulations cover appropriate behavior for the protection of flora and fauna, cultural heritage, park facilities, water supply and to ensure the safety and education of park visitors,” he said. These regulations are reviewed at least every decade to ensure they are contemporary and effective. The main changes
proposed include removing unnecessary provisions from the previous regulations, reducing overlap, improving consistency with other regulations and making the regulations easier to interpret. They also allow the declaration of days when wheel chains are not required to be carried in Mt Baw Baw and Mt Buffalo National Parks and incorporate provisions of the current National Parks Regulations 2006 into one set of regulations. Targeted consultation with key stakeholders was conducted earlier this year and a regulatory impact statement has been prepared and is now available for review.

The battle of Yukigassen
MT BULLER hosted the National Yukigassen Championships last week, with 10 teams competing to be Australia’s best. The mountain’s iconic Bourke Street run was transformed into a battle field for the event and the competition was intense. The winning team was granted an official invitation to the 26th ShowaShinzan International Yukigassen event in Japan next year. A host of celebrities joined forces with locals and other guests to take part in an intense two hours of Yukigassen. However, there can only be one champion and the Black Jacket Ninjas, made up of members of Mt Buller’s Mountain Operations team and 2011 Miss Universe Australia, Scherri-Lee Biggs, were simply unstoppable. The Black Jacket Ninjas used tactical nous and wave after wave of coordinated assaults to destroy the opposition and claim the coveted first place. Mt Buller would like to thank all involved in the event and looks forward to welcoming everyone back in 2014. What is Yukigassen? Yukigassen is Japanese for ‘snow battle’,
pronounced “Yook’-igass-on.’’ Think dodgeball meets capture the flag with teams of seven throwing snowballs for three minutes...the last team standing wins. Celebrities at this year’s event included Lee Chan (Coxy’s Big Break), Jarrod and Madi Coppock (The Block), Nadia Coppolino (model, fashion blogger), Bec and George Douros (The Block), Nic Henderson (Melbourne Rebels), Scherri–Lee Biggs (Miss Universe Australia 2011, Coxy’s Big Break), Nicole Livingstone (Australian Olympic Swimmer), Glen Moriarty (Postcards), and Will and Woody (The Project).

THE National Alpine Musuem on Mt Buller last week received an added bonus to its collection. As a follow on from the 100 year celebrations for VicRoads (and the Country Roads Board CRB) a large framed photograph of road works from Mt Buller was presented to museum curator Michelle Stevenson on Friday. The photograph depicts the works being undertaken in the snow. Newly appointed North East regional director for VicRoads Bryan Sherritt presented the photo - believed to be of a buslines employee - to Michelle and museum board member Ed Adamson at the Mansfield Historical Society rooms at The Station. The Historical Society also received a further three images for its display. “Since the original Country Roads Board was estab-

Cattleman’s serves up High Country favorites By LIZ WEBB LONG before Snowsports, the High Country was famous for Mountain Cattlemen and the prime beef they produced in this magnificent environment. James Kingsbury, new manager at Mt Buller Cattleman’s Restaurant is inspired by the unique high country culture and the tasty, superior quality local produce that is available. James, who admits his favorite food has always been a good steak, has teamed his entrepreneurial talent as a restaurateur with the culinary talents of head chef Andy Cosden to create a top quality Steak House that’s becoming the talk of Mt Buller. Steak lovers can enjoy the finest quality Black Angus steaks plain, or with a variety of rich tasty sauces – red wine jus, creamed green peppercorns or robust mustard to name a few. Personally, Andy’s favorite is
the medium marble score, aged Scotch fillet. If you prefer to try other locally produced hearty fare, there is succulent braised Corowa pork belly or the grand lamb shank as well as calamari and Caesar Salad. Cattleman’s introduced a Tuesday staff ‘Seafood special’ this year; it’s proving to be so popular that mountain guests have discovered it, so bookings are necessary. Wednesday is mixed grill night and Thursday the special deal is a sizzling steak selection platter for two which includes two complimentary glasses of wine. A new, carefully chosen wine list includes some big bodied reds to match the steaks and to cater for all tastes, boutique beers such as White Rabbit and James Squires are also featured. For a real taste of the High Country, a night out at Cattleman’s will appeal to all.

Australia’s first Winter Olympian showcased at Alpine Museum By MICHELLE STEVENSON Curator, National Alpine Museum of Australia WHO will be representing Australia at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi? So many young hopefuls are training hard and hoping fervently that out of many they will be the lucky few. In 1935, not many Australians even knew that the Winter Olympics existed. However, ‘Ken’ George Kennedy, a dedicated young Sydney resident realised his dream of ice skating for Australia as our first ever ‘Winter Olympian’. Kennedy was the son of a bootmaker who also made and sold ice skates from his small shop in Sydney. Ken started skating early and while a teenager represented New South Wales as both an ice hockey player and a speed skater. In the early 30s he won several speed skating championships and moved to England in 1934 for further training. In November 1935 the Australian Olympic Federation stated ‘for the first time in Olympic history Australia will be represented at the Winter section of the Olympic Games. The Executive Committee has carefully considered and endorsed the entry of Kenneth G Kennedy to represent in the Ice Speed Skating events’. Ken was entered into the 500, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 metres speed skating events. He placed 29th of 36 in the 500m and 33rd of 37 in the 1500m and 5000m not competing in the 10,000m. At the 1936 Olympics speed skating was contested outdoors on natural
ice and competitors raced against the clock rather than against each other. Kennedy was used to skating on smaller indoor rinks against other competitors in Britain and Australia. The techniques required for the two disciplines were quite different and for Ken, it took a lot of skill to acquire these techniques. The closing ceremony of the games concluded with president of the organising committee, Dr Ritter von Halt, and the secretary, Baron le Fort, attaching a memory ribbon of the 1936 Winter Olympics to each country’s flag. The memory ribbon presented to Australia was kept by Kennedy and passed down through his family who have kindly leant the NAMA Mt Buller some of this collection for display leading into the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. Significance of the Ken Kennedy Collection: The memory ribbon pinned to the Australian flag at the closing ceremony of the 1936 Winter Olympics at GarmischPartenkirchen and kept by Kennedy is one of the few pieces of material culture which directly relates to Australia’s entry into the Winter Olympics. It also represents Australia’s long involvement with ice sports at an international level and demonstrates the popularity of these sports in Australia at the time in which Ken was competing. The photographs which accompany the ribbon further illustrate these themes. They also demonstrate the long history of Australian Winter Olympic athletes preparing overseas for their events because of the lack of training facilities and competition in Australia. The 1936 Winter Olympics were held during the
Saturday For Kids
rise of the Nazi Government in Germany and the swastika and eagle on the memory ribbon are a stark reminder of the period. There were attempts to boycott the games, however, the Nazi Government managed to use them as a successful exercise in public relations and Ken’s comments about how magnificent they were highlight the overwhelming positive public perception of the games. These games also marked the start of an ongoing debate over where the line should be drawn between amateurs and professionals. A while ago the NAMA (Mt Buller) was offered some material relating to Ken Kennedy by his family. The museum has on loan for 18 months the memory ribbon pinned to the Australian flag during the closing ceremony at the games. This is a huge coup for NAMA as it is an extremely significant object. The material has a very strong provenance - it has been passed from Ken to his son who is still alive today.

Police cracking down on highway speeding
MEMBERS of the MansďŹ eld Highway Patrol Group are ensuring the safety of local drivers by continuing speed detection around local roads and highways. And it is this enforcement that has seen the number of collisions down so far this year. OfďŹ cer in charge, Sergeant Marty McLachlan, said over a one week period seven motorists had been picked up driving at excessive speeds ranging from 125km/h to 162km/h. And in another week a driver was caught speeding at 140km/h. “We are out there to catch these speeding motorists, to keep the local drivers safe on our roads as much as keeping everyone else safe. “The reason we are out there is because locals share the roads with other motorists and we want to enforce safety,â€? McLachlan said. “Because we are out there every day the number of collisions are down - and our enforcement is the reason they are down. “We know that locals get annoyed being pulled over for PBTs but we have to check everybody - we are there to keep everyone safe. Sgt McLachlan said over a one week period recently 1638 PBTs were carried out and he was happy to report that zero
offences were detected. “Not one drink driver was picked up, this is a very good result as far as we’re concerned,â€? he said. Sgt McLachlan said at least one morning each week ofďŹ cers start very early in the day and it is usually the motorists heading for the mountain that are picked up doing excessive speeds. “We will keep on doing the early patrols to keep our roads safe,â€? he said.

What tourists do with their trash RESEARCH to determine what attitudes tourists have towards littering and recycling when they are away from home has just been completed. Run by the North East Victorian Regional Management Waste Group (NevRwaste) in partnership with recycling consultants Mike Ritchie and Associates (MRA), face to face interviews were held from July 15 to July 26 in various North East locations including Mt Buller.
Information from the surveys will now be used to create a long term behavior change campaign to preserve resources and keep the scenic and important North East tourist destinations litter free. The focus is to look at behavior change and identify any barriers that prevent visitors from doing the right thing as far as litter and recycling is concerned, and how to overcome those barriers.

Encouraging internationals help Mount Buller racers By LIZ WEBB SKI racing is a ďŹ ckle sport; no two days are the same. Snow conditions vary from run to run and a racer’s mindset is usually what produces the winning margin. Persistent, unrelenting training is the key to success and the world’s best coaches are always devising different ways to inspire their racers. Mt Buller Race Club program director “Stofâ€? (as he’s known to everyone) has been introducing a new element to training at Mt Buller – international racers. With the 2014 Winter Olympics taking place next February, serious year round training is on the agenda for many racers. This year, Mt Buller Race Club is hosting Austrians, an American and a French Timorese racer. Stof loves having international racers at Mt Buller; he believes that their attitude to training encourages our Aussies to really examine their racing aims and goals. “I ďŹ nd that international kids who have grown up where skiing and snowsports are part of everyday life treat racing differently,â€? he said. “When they commit to racing as

a career, they are totally focused on their goals and their work ethic is inspiring. “It doesn’t matter what the snow conditions or weather are like, they’re out there training.â€? Stof and Mt Buller Race Club realised that a number of international racers were keen to continue ‘on snow’ training during the northern summer, so they set up a program to support young racers to train in Australian conditions and live with Aussie families. Stof added that for overseas racers,

there is an extra beneďŹ t of the conditions. “In Europe and America where perhaps 160 competitors take part in a race, in Australia you have much smaller ďŹ elds, so competition is easier and if you’re trying to qualify for Olympic selection then you need under 140 FIS points as a starting point, so you need to do really well and less competitors is a real advantage when it comes to racing points.â€? The Parker family is hosting four international racers – Clemens and Manuela from Austria, Tucker from Colorado, USA and Johan who is skiing for East Timor. Katie Parker, who is the current
Australian Alpine Children’s Champion, loves the beneďŹ ts of living in a mini united nations this season. “It’s great having other racers around to talk to about the day’s training and in the mornings, when the weather is sometimes awful it really helps that we all just have to get up and go out,â€? Katie said. “Also I really like how competitive we all are, we’re constantly trying to beat each other, but we’re also really working together to help Johan achieve his goal of racing for East Timor at Sochi in 2014.â€? It seems like Stof and Mt Buller Race Club have worked out an inspirational system.

A cracking celebration MT BULLER’S Nutcracker Ski Club has already started celebrations for its 50 years status and in 2014 and 2015 will celebrate being on the mountain for its half century. Formed in 1963 Nutcracker Ski Club commenced building at Mt Buller in the summer of 1964 and by the winter had the frame erected. Work recommenced later that year enabling occupation for the 1965 season during which a very successful opening party was held resulting in the tows being opened somewhat late on the Sunday morning as the operators struggled with their hangovers. Over the club’s 50 years on Mt Buller club members have seen a lot of changes on the mountain and the existing lodge has been upgraded substantially primarily through member working party weekends. A building surveyor’s report obtained for the club’s current lease renewal application stated that the building was good for another 40 years if properly maintained; not bad for a group of amateurs. Nutcracker Ski Club members have significantly contributed to Mt Buller and the sport of skiing over the years through: z involvement as office bearers
in the Victorian Ski Association, as treasurer (now the Victorian Snow Sports Association); z the Mt Buller Ratepayers’ Association, as inaugural secretary and a current committee member; z participation in the planning process for Mt Buller; z as members of the ski patrol, a ski instructor; z as secretary of the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV); z through involvement with the Mt Buller Race Club (SRC); and z involvement with the Mt Buller branch of the Country Fire Authority. Non-members are always welcomed at Nutcracker and one of the hallmarks of its success is that these visitors feel part of the club. The club is looking to extend and add more beds. Currently memberships are available for people who are prepared to contribute to its ongoing success and to see it continue as a great place to relax, socialise and enjoy while bonding with the other members. Membership enquiries can be directed to the secretary: Lee Chapman by email at leechap9@tpg. com.au.

Fresh snow fall a winner for event MT BULLER welcomed more than 35cms of fresh snow over the weekend boosting the average natural snow depth to 40cms. Temperatures dropped to -2.4 degrees overnight on Saturday and the mountain expected a chilly top of -1 degrees on Sunday. Snow continued to fall on Sunday and Monday and was expected
to fall through the week. Cooler temperatures also allowed snowguns to fire up helping build machine made snow depth to more than 50cms. On Sunday Mt Buller also played host to the 2013 Subaru Victorian Interschools Cross Country Championships with 775 of Victoria’s best Cross Country Skiers tackling
the Bourke Street course. This event will be followed by the 2013 Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships running from August 19-25 at Mt Buller. First staged at Mt Buller in 1958, the 2013 event marks the 56th time the championships have been staged at Australia’s premier alpine resort.

WHEN the kids have had enough of skiing or toboganning then try something different - go searching for gnomes. Gnomes are the little folk that live around the mountain and love to play hide and seek with the children. The Mt Buller Gnome Roam takes visitors (kids and adults alike) on a self-guided tour of the mystical gnome world of the mountain village where they will catch a glimpse of resident Mt Buller gnomes, learn about their favorite places to play as well as some interesting facts about the gnome way of life. Collect a Mt Buller Gnome Roam booklet from the Mt Buller Post Office or Clock Tower and roam the village. The booklet, which makes a perfect keepsake, contains an intricately designed map and beautiful photos of Mt Buller Gnome folk. A further bonus is the gnome stickers available at the Post Office as a reward for completing the roam. On your way up the mountain, you can also stop in at the Gnome Home for a visit. Located about 3km up the Mt Buller Tourist Road, keep an eye out for the Gnome Crossing sign and just past that you will find the Gnome Home, in a majestic Mountain Ash tree.
WELCOME GNOME: The Gnome Home, just 3km from the Mt Buller gates, is a welcome stop for families who are greeted by Mr Gnome who sometimes has friends with him but more often than not the friends are hiding in the snow at the Village just waiting to be found.
Often Mr Gnome, and sometimes friends, are standing outside waiting to greet you. And once in the village come and check out our Gnome-Friendly Venues. The Mt Buller Gnomes have long resided outdoors in the Mt Buller Village, and recently we’ve found new clans that have moved indoors. Some very special people have welcomed gnomes into their venues, so now your little folk can
come indoors and catch up with our little folk. Enzian Hotel on Chamois Stirling Road (Bus Stop 3) offers a reward for the kids with a special gnome hot chocolate and biscuit daily, 4pm - 7pm. The newly re-built Duck Inn Restaurant on Goal Post Road (Bus Stop 6) caters specially for the little folk with the Duck Inn’s Gnometti Bolognese - nightly, 5pm - 7pm. Skates Bistro in the ABOM on New Summit Road,(Bus Stop 13) offers the fun loving ABOM gnomes and friends a treat - the gnome-alicious cookies and gnome nuggets - daily, 8am - late. And at The Whitt - Ski Club of Victoria New Summit Road (Bus Stop 13) they have treats for the kids with gnome hot chocolates and specially created gnome meals in their kid friendly venue. This is offered on weekends and school holidays, 12 noon - 7pm. On top of the New Summit Road at The Arlberg (Bus Stop 15) there’s no place like it for gnome (and kid) friendly offers - just ask for Gnome specials - daily, 4pm - 10pm. Take a little piece of gnome home with you; when you purchase a Gnome Hot Chocolate from our Gnome Friendly venues a gorgeous mug is yours to keep.

genetic motivation to succeed after some more race and training seasons in their MBRC and TBR programs, plus internationally in Europe and America. “We at MBRC are structuring the next wave of athletes to follow and Ysabel sits in the Skier Cross development team; Angus is working through his journey out of children’s level competitions onto the international big league events. “Watch this space in two to three years.” He said while he encourages his children to achieve their passion comes from within.
“I strongly believe the athlete must internally self-motivate, yes my passion has infused Ysabel and Angus, and their self-start desire is created within their own goals. “They have motivation to do better than I ever did.” Although Alistair has no formal coaching qualifications, he does have an eye that occasionally suggests to an athlete an aspect to consider, but strongly believes you must put trust in the inherent coaching staff within a program. “My family has skiing in their DNA, they ‘get-it’ what alpine environment is all about,
from putting in on the slopes for their athletic outcomes, to the fun social life-long experiences,” he said. “Ysabel and Angus learnt their craft in life with Jules and I, but will take from such and enhance to a single-minded result they choose.” At present Mum, Jules, lives at Mt Buller winter-long, with Ysabel and Angus, so they can gain their valuable on-snow training daily, plus combine schooling in the afternoons. He recently turned 15 and is currently at Scotch College. “I compete in the Interschools every year for my school and I’ve won division 3 national moguls and division 4-5 as well,” he said. “I train in TBR with Hamish Cox as my coach and he travels with us to such places as Steamboat Colorado where I competed at Christmas time. “Steamboat would have to be my favorite overseas mountain after that camp. “When I was there I got invited to an elite camp during May for three weeks to train

IT can be said that a family that play together stay together. Well the same could be said for a skiing family that is well known and entrenched on Mt Buller for skiing, competing and promoting snowsports. The Guss family have long connections with the mountain and Alistair (dad) is currently president of the Mt Buller Race Club (MBRC). A former Winter Olympic competitor, Alistair modestly said he gained no victory at 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, Yugoslavia. “However, during my second World Cup season on the downhill circuit and only as an 18 year old, I had two top 30 World Cup results the two weeks leading into the Olympics which performances qualified me late,” he said. “I finished 31st in the downhill, behind gold medallist, American Billy Johnston.” Alistair said Mt Buller Race Club is looking to boast seven to eight athletes at Sochi 2014 Olympics. “No other race club worldwide will boast the same achievement,” he said. “My own children, Angus and Ysabel, will gain their own self-driven

Getting ready for Sochi TO mark the countdown to Sochi 2014, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) recently launched the official Sochi 2014 Team website, and with it, named the 120 Australian athletes in contention to compete at the next Olympic Winter Games in Russia. On that list are Mt Buller hopefuls Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin and Anton Grimus. Approximately 50 athletes will get to Sochi, meaning the coundown represents a crucial dash for Olympic qualification and training - all of which will be covered on the new Sochi 2014 Australian Olympic Team website. Australia’s Winter Olympic medal-winning streak dates back to Lillehammer in 1994. With Sochi in sight, the AOC is determined to give what is set to be the biggest and most competitive Australian Olympic Winter Team the exposure it deserves. “There is no doubt that this is the best qualified group of athletes ever vying for selection in an Australian Olympic Winter Team,” said Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman, who will lead his fifth team in Sochi. “It represents an exciting mix of really experienced athletes from some of our traditional sports, some elite athletes in the new sports being added to the Olympic program for the first

time in Sochi, and some strong emerging talent.” Currently there are 120 athletes across 11 disciplines who have been nominated by their respective national federations as being ‘Sochi hopefuls’. They include all the medallists from Vancouver 2010, multiple World Champions, World Cup and World Championship medallists, Olympians on the comeback, a summer Olympian chasing a new winter challenge, Winter Youth Olympic representatives and siblings all doing everything possible to earn selection. With the domestic season set to begin, the AOC has launched this innovative responsive design
website earlier than usual to promote these fantastic young Australians and to showcase Australia’s rich Olympic history. There is a dedicated page for every athlete and detailed guides to every Winter Olympic sport and venue. In addition to news, videos and galleries, there are more than 40 blog entries from Australia’s Olympic hopefuls - getting to know an Australian Olympic team has never been easier. There are new exciting events for Sochi and the sports pages are the place to learn about these and the format of each event. The selection process is explained and a list of some of the key events where athletes
will fight for qualifying performances. The social media hub will continue to grow, as the games get closer so the Australian public can support and connect with the team. Detailed schedules will evolve as athletes are selected, and during the Games there will be results and medal tallies direct from the Russian organisers. Comprehensive multimedia and social media coverage from AOC media staff in the snow and behind the scenes in Sochi will continue over the next 200 days before peaking for the 16 days of competition. AUSTRALIANS love to compete. We love to turn anything into a competition, and from an early age we are involved in many types of sporting events. Mt Buller is host to a lot of races each season. We are also home to the massive Victorian and Australian Interschools championships that attract thousands of racers. Taking part in racing and competition is awesome for all ages. It helps push your comfort level on a board and is fun to do. Taking part in training, or getting lessons, is a great idea; it will help develop valuable snowboarding skills and an understanding of racing. A tiny soft jibber board is not ideal for racing, a stiffer longer board will hold a better edge and be more stable at higher speeds. Race boards are aggressive and really fast for those serious competitors. Many Mt Buller racers have gone on to successfully compete and build careers overseas. Boardercross, Banked Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom are all types of racing that we take part in here in Australia. In 1982 the first National Snowboard race was held in Suicide Six, outside Woodstock, Vermont. The goal of the race appeared mostly to be “survival”, because the race consists of a steep
icy kamikaze downhill run, called ‘The Face’. Luckily racing isn’t quite so extreme now. In 1985 snowboarding became recognised as an official sport with the first World Cup being held in Zürs, Austria. The International Snowboard Federation (ISF) was founded in 1990 to provide universal contest regulations. The first ever Boardercross event was held in the spring of 1991 at Blackcomb Mount in the Whistler - Blackcomb resort of British Columbia. One of the more unique and legendary contests is the Mt Baker Legendary Banked Slalom. Since 1985, it has been won by some of the biggest names in the history of the sport. Every year there is an open lottery to hopefully win a spot to enter the race. I was lucky enough to race there a few years ago, and it was an experience I will never forget. I got to race against some of my idols, and watch the legends of the sport show me how it’s done. Competition and racing is a great thing to be involved in at any age. I think it’s great to do your best and give it your all. Always be a good sport, it’s supposed to be fun.

A NEW medical App has been developed, with the ability to transform mobile phones into potentially life saving devices by showing the user’s critical medical details on the locked screen. Developed by Emergency ID Australia, a provider of medical jewellery, the App can display urgent medical information, such as allergies and reactions, medications and emergency contact details, and is available from the Apple App store and Android shop. This information appears on the locked screen, so paramedics and emergency services personnel can immediately access information that might otherwise not be available due to an inability to access phones
that are locked. Designed by Emergency ID director Nicole Graham, the idea came from her experience as a police officer. “When I was working in the emergency services, we looked at people’s phones to try to find their details but they were often locked or password protected so any potentially useful information was inaccessible,” said Ms Graham. The App is ideally suited to those with severe allergies, existing medical conditions such as epilepsy or heart disease, and for those with dementia. Users can input various information on medical conditions, procedures, and basic details such as contact numbers and their doctor’s details.

Buller’s muddy waters are okay By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY BELOW average rainfall and extensive snow making on Mt Buller has depleted water supplies in the mountain’s reservoir - Sun Valley dam. Many skiers and mountain workers recently were alarmed at the level of the dam which appeared to be ‘muddy waters’. However, Resort Management Board (RMB) has defended this state and explained the reasons why the low water appearance. “Despite below average natural snow falls and an unseasonal start
to winter, Mt Buller has been open for more than 45 days and has offered skiers and snowboarders more than 30 days top to bottom on Little Buller Spur,” an RMB spokesperson said. “This has only been possible due to the extensive and stateof-the-art Mt Buller snowmaking system. “The development of the Mt Buller snowmaking system is the product of a highly successful partnership between Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) and the RMB that has delivered great outcomes for skiers, snowboarders and
all Mt Buller stakeholders,” the spokesperson said. Snowmaking production this season has been similar to last year and as always there is a noticeable reduction in the water level in the Sun Valley dam, however, snowmaking production is ongoing. “The dam is constantly being recharged with a combination of water from the Boggy Creek catchment and our world class recycled water treatment plant,” the spokesperson said. “RMB and BSL both recognise that snowmaking is vital to the
continued prosperity of the resort and the RMB is committed to continuing to maximise the daily inflows into the Sun Valley dam at all times and to increasing storage capacity.” The spokseperson denied there were problems with the dam’s pumping system saying that all was in good working order. “The recent cold outbreak that brought 40cm of snow to the resort in 72 hours and the encouraging forecasts for more heavy snowfalls will hopefully make 2013 a late, but very good snow season,” the spokesperson said.

Cancelled event, but weekend full of fun THE mid July Perisher Slopestyle competition was cancelled but Team Buller Riders (TBR) still had an amazing experience. The TBR team comprising 10 kids and two coaches joined up with 20 kids and three coaches from NSW. They all managed to take part in a Futures Clinic run by Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) coach Ramon Cooper and this was a bonus for the NSW coaches Jordan Houghton, Boen Ferguson and Charlie Timmins who are also in training for the 2014 Olympics. Due to the bad weather, TBR coach Watkin McLennan said the team was able to make use of the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre (the National Mogul Team train there), Australia’s only world class trampoline centre. Saturday and Sunday provided kinder weather, so the team discovered a hidden patch of snow to practise on with some spectacular jumps off cliffs into half a metre of powder. TBR sponsor Simon Blundel, owner of Le Bent socks, skied with the team and mini competitions were held, with prizes of K2 and Line Skis, clothing,

goggles and other cool gear. The weekend may not have been quite what they were expecting, but there were definitely no complaints from TBR. One young participant, Mani Swift, said “it was so much fun and skiing on another mountain other than Buller was a great experience”.
Yoga growing beyond all expectations By LIZ WEBB MENTION yoga and generally it conjures up images of Indian yogi’s sitting cross legged in caves or more recently, trendy young females on beaches. Yoga at Mt Buller? The size of the Yoga and Pilates classes at Mt Buller has exploded. Quite a dedicated little community has developed as the classes offer great camaraderie, yet a very personal workout. Skiers and snowboarders, males and females, are discovering the amazing benefits of Yoga and Pilates – stronger core muscles, gentle stretching and the ability to focus completely on
their body in the present moment. So many now turn up that due to space restrictions, class numbers have been limited to a maximum of 16 with many more being turned away. Gym manager Anthony Comben (Combo) commented that he is delighted. “When we started offering yoga around six years ago, only women turned up, and some nights we had no one,” Combo said. “Now a real sense of community has developed, with yoga, and more recently Pilates bringing together all ages and gender, mountain staff and guests, and young and old. “Many participants comment that it’s so good to have something
else to do that doesn’t involve just drinking, after skiing or boarding.” Combo added that the Mt Buller resort management (RMB) has been very helpful in finding extra spaces for these larger classes and other community group activities that are increasing at Mt Buller. “We are all looking at what further options we have for a ‘designate’ Community Room,” said Combo. Anyone interested in participating in Yoga or Pilates can visit the Mt Buller Gym on Level 1 and sign up for an intense, yet calming session in a wonderful community atmosphere.
STRETCH AND RELAX: Participants in the weekly yoga classes at Mt Buller go through their yoga exercises in stretching and relaxing.
