Speaking at Mt Buller last week, Grimus said he has been training hard and looking forward to representing his home mountain as he prepares for the Winter Olympics. “I’m super excited for the upcoming year and to be working with Mt Buller in preparation for my bid for Olympic

qualification,” he said. “I have been training hard at Buller and various locations this season before we head over to Europe in November for the competition season, and this preparation down in the southern winter is key in our preparation for the northern winter.” Grimus enjoyed a successful northern winter where he achieved a seventh place at the World Championships at Voss, Norway.

He also placed third at the World Cup in Nakiska, Canada, before heading back home and competing most recently at the FIS Australian New Zealand Continental Cup at Mt Hotham, where he placed fifth. Grimus juggles his time between competitive skiing and university studies, taking on an engineering course in Canberra. Earlier this year he said life
with skiing and studying was not so hard as when it is summer here, university is in recess so he can easily travel overseas to compete. “When it is winter here I can do my studies and compete and train on the snowfields in Australia - it also helps that we have a big break from uni in the middle of the year and at the height of our snow season,” he said. Grimus commutes back to Mt Buller whenever he can to be near his family and his beloved Mt Buller.

A wealth of winter food knowledge DAVID Bloodworth, head chef at Enzian Hotel on Chamois, is a new chum to the Mt Buller community, but not to ski fields. Although this is David’s first year on Mt Buller he has cheffed in ski resorts throughout Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA for more than 42 years. He prefers contemporary cuisine, but says he does not have any one favorite as there are so many great dishes he has created over the years.
“There does tend to be a Canadian flair to my cooking - I am half Canadian after all,” he says with a smile. David only spends his winters in Australia as during our summer he heads back to Canada for the northern winter. Although not his absolute favorite dish he offers one very tempting delight at Enzian. “You’ll have to come into Enzian to get the real deal with all my little tricks that make this dish a stand out,” he says.

Snow way known season is ending MT BULLER has said no to the onset of spring in 2013, with the resort celebrating the continuation of winter with a jam-packed event calendar, special offers and more, right throughout the month of September. Snow bunnies were spotted protesting against spring on Thursday in Federation Square (Melbourne) where six tonnes of snow from Mt Buller was dumped, much to the delight of lunchtime commuters and onlookers. Mt Buller was covered in more than a metre of snow last week, and looks set to enjoy a sensational final month of the 2013 snow season. September sees a range of events take place on Mt Buller, with the Australian Interschools Championships and Urban Pro ski events, the fun and fluoro fashions of 80s Day, the Peak Pics Photo Competition and Mt Buller Short Film Festival finales as well as a dedicated Kids’ Week all happening throughout the month. Hundreds of school students will converge on Mt Buller from September 4-8 for the 2013 Australian Interschool SnowSports Championships, which sees students compete in a range of disciplines for national titles. Ski lockers across the resort will be raided for relics from the days of fluoro one-pieces, headbands and sunglasses as staff and guests gear up a celebration of the decade that fashion forgot on 80s Day, this Saturday. Celebrations will be held across the mountain, with a DJ at Koflers spinning 80s tunes, a World Record attempt for the most amount of one-piece ski suits in one place, and the annual 80s Après Party where there’ll be a DJ, prizes for the best dressed and more. mountain on Saturday, September 14 – the Urban Pro and the finale of the Mt Buller Short Film Festival and Peak Pics Photo Competition. The annual Urban Pro junior slopestyle event sees the hottest junior skiers and snowboarders showing judges what tricks they have up their sleeves as they compete for great prizes under lights on a series of urban terrain park features. And in the evening the Mt Buller Short Film Festival and Peak Pics Photo Competition will take place, showing finalists of both competitions on the big screen at the Mt Buller Cinema. A selection of finalist films will be chosen by the expert judging panel and winners announced on the night. Cycling Australia announced the calendar for the Subaru Australian Mountain Bike Season for 2014, with Mt Buller hosting the second round of the XCE Invitational over the weekend of February 7 and 8 next year.

Family fun: mountain spans the generations
IT’S families and their long connection with Mt Buller that make this mountain special. The story of the Gillies family connection with Mt Buller is like that of many Mt Buller families. Chris Gillies, now a company director, business coach and IT mentor, and Robyn, an anesthetist along with Tess a year 10 student who is aiming to study medicine, have been part of Mt Buller for the last 50 years when Chris ďŹ rst discovered the magic of Mt Buller. Chris came to skiing relatively late. She was 20 when with friends made her first day trip to Mt Buller. In those days lodge accommodation was very basic; lift facilities were limited and according to Chris, “it took many trips to learn to snowplow on very long, heavy skisâ€?. One weekend they stayed at the Whitt which offered an accommodation/lesson package special and she had her first lesson with ski school director Walter. Chris loved it so much that in 1971, she, her husband and a group of friends bought into the old Downhill Lodge, made it their winter retreat and renamed the Lodge OMSKI. With two small daughters,

Sue and Robyn, they spent most weekends at OMSKI where all the members were ordinary young families with little money, but a love of snowsports. Chris reminisced, “There were no shuttle buses, everyone would walk with skis and young children to the Whitt Poma, then traverse across to the Shaky Knees T-Bar to reach the Summit, in those days it was all pomas and T-Bars on Buller.
“The pomas used to pull you up into the air, so we used to put the kids on our shoulders, it was the only way they were able to ride the poma.â€? Robyn Gillies learned to ski when she was just two and a half. One of her ďŹ rst memories was the old BB1 chair and how fast it was (they didn’t slow lifts down in those days). Robyn admits she ‘had no style’, just pointed her skis down
the hill and went fast. One of her strongest memories was when mum, Chris, was skiing Shaky Knees, broke her ankle and was taken to hospital. Teenagers Robyn and sister Sue were left at OMSKI for the school holidays, watched over by other lodge members, and the staff at the pub where they went for many meals. It certainly wouldn’t happen like that these days. The third generation Tess was put on skis as an 18 months old, and today, though much to her mum and grandma’s disdain, Tess has now “gone to the dark side – snowboardingâ€?. Tess recently competed in the Interschools for St Catherine’s - cross country and snowboard, “anything except mogulsâ€?, though she actually has her name on a cup for a moguls championship. Snowsports is a common bond that keeps this family together with Chris, Robyn and Tess skiing in Japan last year and every so often, they visit Sue Gillies who now lives in Denver and has a small place in Vail. Mt Buller is truly a mountain for families. Chris’s ďŹ nal words were that she’s waiting for the day when she can take the fourth generation out for their ďŹ rst ski.

The scholarship pays the costs of sending the athlete overseas and history has proven that the winning athlete can excel in their chosen ski competition. The 2013 winner Angus Cronin (pictured with Mark Adams) was presented with this award last week. Angus will be travelling overseas during January. One such previous winner of this award was Brodie Summers who last week won the ABOM Moguls and is a hopeful for the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

In safe hands
MT BULLER CFA brigade held an assimilation exercise last week with great results and leaving the mountain community confident it is in safe hands. The emergency scenario was a fire in the new Buller Central (YHA) building off the village square with four people missing and the top floor filled with smoke. Firefighters got the call just on 6pm to attend with two units answering the alarm. Region 23 operations manager, Paul Horton, was ‘controller and Vicfire’ for the exercise and oversaw the whole operation. The aim of the exercise was to assess the level of response, accuracy of equipment handling and general overall actions of the members of the brigade. Mr Horton, as controller, then judged at what stage police and ambulance services were called, as well as back up from the Mansfield CFA brigade. Although there was no actual fire or smoke, ‘victims’ were found in the building and were treated and assessed by medical and ambulance staff and were handled as if they were actual patients. Police were called in to help with traffic control and assistance. Overall the exercise went off very well and was followed up by a debrief of all members at the fire station. Mr Horton said, following the exercise that there had been terrific support from management of Buller Central (Stuart Hogg). “Without Stuart’s participation the exercise would not have had the same
effect,” Mr Horton said. Supporting the exercise were crews from the Mansfield and Merrijig CFA brigades and the Booroolite brigade which stepped up within ESTA to support the Merrijig brigade and the broader community had there been a second call when they were up the mountain. “The participation and contribution of Ambulance Victoria who ‘showed off’ their new Community Ambulance officers for the first time was wonderful as well,” Mr Horton said. RMB manager resort operation’s Andrew Markwick not only contributed to the exercise but has also commenced planning to support agencies into the future. Mr Horton also thanked Victoria Police and the CFA health assessment team who conducted research into the physiological effects of heat stress on firefighters. “This leading edge research in conjunction with Deakin University will help CFA better serve and support firefighters into the future,” Mr Horton said. “And of course the volunteers of the Mt Buller brigade for their ongoing commitment to CFA and the resort must also be recognised. “This group of people have continually stepped up seeking opportunities for development and skill acquisition and should be congratulated for their efforts. “All these groups’ involvement and participation during the snow season allowed the exercise to be the success it was.” Mr Horton said plans and considerations were being fielded for 2014.

Next Tuesday, September 10, he will be promoting the event “Do It In A Dress� (DIIAD), for One Girl Mission. The charity’s mission is to give girls in Africa access to education. One of the ways they do this is by providing scholarships to ensure the girls have school books, pens, uniforms and school fees. Special day at Mt Buller for students STUDENTS from grade 6 at Mansfield Primary School (MPS) enjoyed a special day out at Mt Buller on Monday, courtesy of funds from the Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day. Organised by teacher Cathy Johnstone, all students enjoyed a ski/ snowboarding day, complete with lessons and ski hire for free, with the only cost being $20 for the bus. This provided a wonderful opportunity for all students to enjoy a day together out of the classroom, especially so for those who otherwise don’t have the opportunity to regularly participate in the yearly ski program at MPS. Ms Johnstone, who came up with the idea, said it was an opportunity for the grade
6 group to enjoy a special day together as they near the end of their primary school journey. “The day matches in with our School to Summit program, and for some students who are unable to join in the regular ski program, it is wonderful to give them the opportunity to have a day at the snow,” said Ms Johnstone. By LIZ WEBB FIVE local women, two men from Mt Baw Baw and a Level 1 Mt Buller Snowboard instructor challenged themselves to a gruelling three day training course at Mt Buller recently. Their aim (which they achieved) was to gain their Level 1 Alpine Ski Instructors certificate.
SEASON 2014 MEMBERSHIP
All participants have been skiing for years, and the women are ‘mountain mums’ generally living on Mt Buller for the season with children in various training programs, so they had a pretty good idea of what was in store for them. “Still, it was a very intense three days and it’s amazing how much you really do know, but also the number of tips and techniques you pick up,”
said participant Emma DeanGraham. “We certainly all appreciate a lot more just what instructors have to go through to teach, and also the patience that is required to conduct successful lessons.” All passed the examination held on the fourth day and examiner Scott Birrell was pleased to advise them that they would be welcome to
come back next season to take part in the Level 2 Training Course. The new Level 1 Instructors can teach Discovery to Level 3 at Ski School. Both Mark Dixon, head of the program and Ant Hill, APSI examiner, advised that they were delighted with this pilot course and that more courses will be offered in 2014.

Plenty to see at Buller’s annual short film festival THE Mt Buller Short Film Festival hits the screens of the Mt Buller Cinema on September 14. This year will see the introduction of a perpetual trophy for the overall winner. The trophy is an old film camera atop a snowgum ‘tripod’. Local builder Peter Bowker has crafted the tripod piece from alpine wood, which has three branches as support, imitating a tripod, and film festival co-
ordintor Steve Thompson of Appaloosa Films has donated one of his old film cameras to sit atop this beautiful stand. Annual winners’ names will be added each year to the trophy which will be on permanent display in the foyer of Buller Central. Closing dates for entries is September 9 - so be quick to get those last minute short films in and then come along next week for a great viewing of all entries.

SEASON 2013 marks 20 years of service to the Mt Buller Ski Patrol by Caitlin Steiner. This season, Caitlin is managing the Mt Buller Medical Centre, so her days with ski patrol are fewer.
Long time ski patrol colleague, Ossi Ramp, was on hand at the recent presentation of her 20 years certificate at the Medical Centre. Caitlin grew up with her family in Mansfield, and
when not working at Buller, is currently living at Tatong. She has also worked as a midwife at the Mansfield District Hospital, and remains involved in remote area midwifery training throughout Australia.

VISITOR entry statistics for week ending August 25 showed a healthy increase for both Mt Buller and Mt Stirling over the same week last year. Around 1900 more people visited Buller, representing an eight per cent increase, while Stirling more than doubled to 1213 for the week, a massive 12 percent rise. Once again this compares favorably with all Victorian resorts where the figure was just three per cent for the week. In year to date figures, both local resorts have almost drawn level with last year’s numbers, with Buller at 213,306 compared to 216,109 for 2012, while Stirling sits at 4220 against 4250. In terms of visitor days spent at the resorts, Buller leads the way, with a total of 386,353 days spent on the mountain, compared to 377,956 for last year, a two per cent increase, again bucking the overall trend of all resorts, which showed a 16 per cent decline. Resort operators are hoping the very good recent falls will hold into spring and the school holidays which start on September 21, although a sudden warm burst of weather this week, while making for clear sunny skiing days, hasn’t helped in maintaining the snow depth, or allowing for snow making. By Liz Webb LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR SEASON 2013: I made the switch from Alpine to Ski Cross two years ago and haven’t looked back since - I love the excitement, fast paced nature and unpredictable outcome of ski cross. Currently, I’ve travelled to all the well known skiing countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Austria but also to less known countries in Eastern Europe and Scandanavia. The Australian team base is in Leogang, Austria and it feels like a home away from home having been there for a number of months for the last three years. WHEN NOT ON THE SLOPES YOU ARE DOING: I’m juggling university studies in between my intense training on and off snow - I attend Deakin Uni and am doing a double degree of commerce and exercise and sports science. FUTURE AIMS: Snow is in my blood and I hope to follow in Dad’s footsteps and eventually become an Olympian for ski cross.
S ELLE HATHERLEY: Elle Hatherley is back for her third Mt Buller season with the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV), having come for a change of scene from the Marriott Hotel in Melbourne, and she loves it so much, she keeps coming back. As well as working in reception at The Whitt, last year Elle also took on a day volunteering with Guest Services. Passionate about her work, she is aiming for a hospitality management position, and her knowledge of the mountain, her sense of humor and friendly personality has won her many friends on Mt Buller. Away from the Whitt, she loves being down in the Village Centre meeting and greeting people for guest services, relaxing at ‘HooHah’, and getting the odd day out on the slopes to improve her snowboarding. Elle thinks most Mt Buller residents will remember her as the “door bitch” on Paddy’s night, while
those who work and stay at the SCV remember and appreciate her helpfulness and cheery personality. Her prize is a dinner voucher donated by the Arlberg Hotel.
S RAVI BHATTARI: Snow and food is what brought Ravi Bhattari to Buller last year, and he is back again to enjoy more of the same as he works at Pat’s Italian Restaurant and Bar. Nominated for always providing service with integrity, commitment, and a smile, Ravi just enjoys being around so many nice people. He obviously enjoys his work, nominating Pat’s as his favorite place on the mountain to hang out. His fantastic and beautiful smile is what Mt Buller will remember Ravi for. S TAMMY WALL: “Where else can I ski in the morning and do my job in the afternoon?” says Foodworks Mt Buller employee Tammy Wall, who is another employee of the week. Working off mountain during the rest of the year, Tammy leapt at the opportunity to mix lifestyle and work by taking up a position on the mountain, which she has done for three years now. Described as always hap p y and moti v ati ng others, Tammy says the supermarket is a great place to work where you can see and catch up with everyone, and be part of a team. S AUSTIN ROCKEMAN: Austin Rockeman, a chef at the Duck Inn, is in his first season on Buller, having decided to take up the opportunity to cook overseas, snowboard, and experience something new.
The mix of international staff, the friendly people, and the opportunity to board in Australia are what he loves about working on Buller, and on a day off, loves nothing more than hitting the slopes. “All your cares are gone when you are outside enjoying nature,” says Austin. He is described as a proactive member and chef at the Duck Inn, with a consistently high standard of food, extending his teamwork to all work areas and interacting with guests. Austin wins a pair of goggles donated by Georges Ski Hire.
S ABI TREADWELL: Following her friend of nine years, Craig Chandler, to Buller last season was a decision Abi Treadwell is very glad she made, and has embraced the Buller life like it’s her family. A b i i s a t Pa n c a k e s Plus, and is noted for her exceptional work, is extremely bright and cheery to all the customers and staff, and is super efficient. Out of work hours she enjoys the great atmosphere of Enzian and Pension Grimus for an afternoon work debrief session over a quiet drink. S KENDALL WRIGHT: An opportunity to learn snowboarding first brought Kendall Wright to Mt Buller and Kofflers four years ago. Her happy nature and ability to motivate others to be positive are what makes her a valuable member of the Kofflers team, and she loves catching up with the regular customers for a chat and a drink. Big upsets at James Boag’s ABOM Mogul Challenge
MT BULLER hosted the 25th annual James Boag’s ABOM Mogul Challenge on Saturday, August 31 with beautiful sunshine blanketing the Chamois course for the iconic event. Some of Australia’s best mogul skiers were joined by an international field of competitors, making up a record number of 123 entries for this year’s competition. Teenage star Matt Graham was the front runner going into the event, having taken out the past four ABOM Open Men’s Titles. Graham was also chasing his own piece of history, with a win in the 2013 competition equalling two-time Australian Olympian Nick Cleaver’s record of five straight ABOM titles (achieved between 1991 and 1995). However, the competition was always going to be strong and Graham was upstaged by Mt Buller’s own Brodie Summers, who put on an incredible display to edge out Graham in the final. The win caps off a successful period for Brodie Summers, who made his first podium at the recent National Mogul

Championships at Perisher. In the Open Women’s event Britt Cox was looking to continue her own winning streak, chasing her fourth James Boag’s ABOM Mogul Challenge title. However, there was no room

Ski Lifts, Laurie Blampied, said that the James Boag’s ABOM Mogul Challenge continued to go from strength to strength. “This event continues to grow and the 25th annual James Boag’s ABOM Moguls Chal-
lenge was by far the biggest and best yet,” Mr Blampied said. “With the competition for places at the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics still up for grabs, it was terrific to attract such a strong field. “Both Brodie and Nicole were worthy winners and we look forward to welcoming them back to defend their titles in 2014. “It really is an amazing spectacle and Mt Buller is proud to continue to host this iconic event,” Mr Blampied said. Interschools bigger and better THE 2013 Subaru Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships held at Mt Buller recently, saw thousands of participants and parents flocking to the largest snowsports event in the Southern Hemisphere. Mt Buller welcomed more than 5800 registered entries for this year’s event, which is a significant increase on previous years’ participation numbers and a positive trend for snowsports in Australia. Snow conditions were also ideal for this year’s competition, thanks to significant falls over the past fortnight blanketing the resort in fresh snow. Event manager David Spiers said the Victorian Interschools was all about getting young skiers and snowboarders involved in competitive snowsports. “We are ecstatic to have a five per cent increase in event

The Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships, were first staged in 1958 at Mt Buller and this year’s event is the 56th time the championships have been held at Mt Buller. The seven Interschools SnowSports disciplines available in 2013 were Alpine Giant Slalom, Skiercross, Moguls, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboardcross, Classical Cross Country and Cross Country Relay.

AUSTRALIA’S Winter Olympic Games aspirants Callum Watson and Esther Bottomley both delivered hard-charging finishes to cross the line in fifth place in the Kanagaroo Hoppett on August 24. In a high-calibre international field of 1000-plus cross country skiers from 23 countries competing in the Kangaroo Hoppet, the event is part of the Suzuki National Snowsport Championships, held at Victoria’s Falls Creek. In what is the largest snowsport competition in the Southern Hemisphere, Watson, chasing his first Olympic appearance in Sochi, Russia, was unable to match the relentless pace of the current world number one distance skier Alexander Legkov of Russia, over the gruelling 42-kilometre course around Falls Creek and out

Local skiers put up hard fight against world class entrants into the Bogong High Plains. Legkov recorded an emphatic win in 1.27.32, almost three minutes ahead of compatriot Ilya Chernousov, with another Russian, Alexey Chernousov, the brother of the second place getter, in third. Bottomley was equally impressive and courageous but had to succumb to Russia’s race winner, Marina Chernousova, the wife of Alexey Chernousov. Marina Chernousova underlined Russia’s dominance in the event with a time of 1.46.03, a little more than three minutes in front of American Lauren Fritz. Japan’s Chisa Obayashi was just
0.29 of a second behind in third place. Three other Australian women delivered stirring results for the host nation by finishing in the top 10 – Lucy Glanville, seventh, Aimee Watson, eighth, and Irene Dunn, 10th. The Aussie men were not to be outdone, with Alex Almloukov, sixth, Phillip Bellingham, eighth, and Ben Derrick, 10th. But clearly the day belonged to the powerful Russian squad, who had been training at Falls Creek for three weeks as part of their preparation for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games in February. Meanwhile, in the women’s event, Obayashi and Chernousova estab-
lished a break over their competitors in the early stages and at about the 21 kilometre mark the Japanese held a small lead. At this mark Bottomley was in sixth place. As Obayashi and Chernousova exchanged places, Bottomley hit the accelerator, grabbing fifth place, passing Czech Kamila Borutova, who won last year’s Canadian Worldloppet race. In the 21-kilometre event Australia’s Damon Morton won while fellow Aussie Anna Trnka won the women’s event. The seven-kilometre Joey Hoppet winners were Australians Liam Burton and Sabrina Howell. The Kangaroo Hoppet is part of the annual Worldloppet series, consisting of 16 races in 16 countries, attracting 135,000 skiers.
Back country adventure THERE is snow on the ground. Yay, what an awesome save to the season. Time has flown, and I can’t believe we are now in September. This is the time of year we start to chat about what we are doing after the season. For a lot of people, a snowboarding or ski trip may be planned to the northern hemisphere. As riders get more confident, they travel and become more interested in finding fresh tracks. I get so worried when I hear people talk about being overseas and travelling in the backcountry with no equipment and no avalanche safety knowledge. A backcountry adventure is an amazing experience, but needs to be respected with every bone in your body.
There is no excuse to travel into the backcountry where there is no guarantee of safety without the proper equipment and at least a basic understanding of avalanche safety. Always know and be confident of your travel buddies and their backcountry abilities. Always have the whole party equipped with transceivers, shovels, probes and know how to use them. Read the avalanche forecast, many accidents have happened after people ignore, don’t read or listen to the avalanche forecast. Always have a plan with your group, understand safe
backcountry travel and don’t just follow, ask questions, and understand what situation you may be getting into. Avalanche courses are valuable and awesome to take part in. Whatever country you go to there are avalanche awareness courses, whether it be an introduction to backcountry, a level 1,2, or 3 certification, some countries even offer online courses. Every resort that has backcountry popularity will usually have guide services available; take advantage of that. The mountains give us so much, but unfortunately they can also take it away. Please be smart on your overseas adventures, and may the pow be with you.

THE Fair Work Ombudsman targeted the Victorian snowfields last week as part of a new campaign to ensure employees are receiving their correct wages. Fair Work inspectors conducted face-to-face audits of 80 businesses, including about 50 at Mt Buller and other Victorian resorts and about 30 in NSW. The snowfields will face further checks over the next two years when inspectors visit in 2014 and 2015 as part of a concerted three-year campaign to ensure businesses are complying with workplace laws. Fair Work inspectors will check that employers are paying staff correctly, maintaining appropriate records and providing employees with pay slips. Visits will not only focus on businesses associated with ski resorts. Any business operating in the snowfields regions could be part of the campaign. Fair Work Ombudsman, Natalie James, said the education and compliance campaign aimed to ensure the many transient snowfields workers are receiving their full entitlements.
THE First MansďŹ eld Scout group hosted the Wallan Scout group on the weekend of August 17 for a joint ski camp with 15 Scouts and ďŹ ve leaders. On the Friday night the group enjoyed a stay over in the MansďŹ eld Scout Hall at the showgrounds preparing for a busy weekend. Saturday was spent visiting Mt
Stirling, with the group hosted by Craig and Barb Jones and their team for a spectacular day of cross country skiing and tobogganing. Many of the Wallan Scouts had never seen snow and the day went down as one of their best ever. Mansfield Scout leader Rachel Jackson lead the group, together with Damion Toes from Wallan. Once cars have finished racing, they will be on show in the Village so that you will be able to get up close and personal with Lamborghinis, Porsches, muscle cars and more Then for more relaxing times Buller has the picnic in the park weekend in March and Easter in April celebrations with both events targeted for children. One thing to remember for bush walkers and hiking is that during those hot summer days of 40 degrees+ Buller offers cooler climate conditions as the mountain is normally approximately 10 degrees cooler in summer making it easy to beat the heat of the city.
