INSIDE SNOW IS FALLING: Just in time for the week of the Subaru Victorian Interschools competitions, more than 30cm of fresh snow has fallen across Mt Buller and Mt Stirling resorts bringing the depth to man made areas of more than 80cm and natural snow to 57cm. Among those enjoying the fresh powder was Hugo Cole who was all smiles as he prepared to set off on his Alpine GS on Monday morning, competing in division five of the Boys events. Better communication By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY
Online technology the way of the future
BULLER Ski Lifts (BSL) was represented at a recent public inquiry into the opportunities for people to use telecommuting and E-Business to Work Remotely in Rural and Regional Victoria. BSL’s general manager, Laurie Blampied, and head of IT, Jonathon Cotterill, made a presentation to the parliamentary inquiry on the needs and accessibility of telecommunications on Mt Buller. Mr Blampied and Mr Cotterill were just two of eight local
company representatives from across the Mansfield Shire to make presentations to MPs Paul Weller, Damian Drum and Geoff Howard. Each company representative outlined how they used electronic communications within their business, the importance of ecommerce and what the future held for them. They also offered views on where the future lay and what they could do better if stronger and more efficient communi-

cations were available. “With more than 800 employees from across the world coming to work at BSL every winter it’s essential that we continue to embrace and improve the way we use e-communication and e-business. “There are challenges to overcome but with support, we can ensure that all businesses across Mt Buller and surrounding areas are able to operate competitively in the modern market.” Also outlined were the ben-

efits of working remotely, either from home or an office, with some saying they were ‘tree changers’ living remotely for a better life style. At present BSL uses e-commerce for online sales such as B-Tags, marketing, staff recruitment, video conferencing, including Skype interviews, training and inductions, and as a means of communicating to employees with their rostering and payment advice. Mr Blampied said the compa-
ny expected B-Tag sales online to rise to around 30 per cent within the next year or two. “The B-Tag is a good example of what we can do by embracing the benefits of technology,” he said. “It has revolutionised the entire way we transact with the guest and vastly improved the service we provide. “Skiers and boarders move faster through the lift gates; they can use it as a debit card around the mountain and simply reload it online whenever necessary.” Continued page 3

THERE’S nothing like a visit to Mt Buller - be it a good season or a fair season. Judging by the number of visitors to the mountain over the past few weeks many visitors still consider it the place to be for a day or two during snow season. In the week finishing August 11 some 27,912 visitors dropped in up the mountain, with some 46,443 staying for more than a day. Mt Buller is by far the most popular of the ski resorts across the state this season with a 28 per cent rise in visitors compared to all other resorts which have recorded minus percentages.

Mt Stirling recorded 566 visitors for the week, a drop of 30 per cent from the same time last year. The year to date figures
for Mt Buller have reached some 158,740, an overall drop from the previous 10 year average of only two per cent.

BY LIZ WEBB OVER summer bets were on as to whether the new YHA building (Buller Central) would be finished in time for winter 2013. I have to say the building exceeds my expectations and the two eating venues, Oli’s Kitchen and the Powder Bar are certainly worth visiting. New manager Stewart Hogg explained that this season, YHA is pacing itself. “We want to get it right, so our menus are limited but our food is really delicious and we have young, friendly funloving staff,” he said. The warm and inviting, ground level Powder Bar is open to the public and offers a small but very

tempting menu including pizza, focaccia, coffee and cakes. Upstairs, Oli’s stateof-the-art, commercial kitchen, serves YHA inhouse guests tasty, wholesome and authentic Italian home cooking. Visitors can book for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, but judging by comments about the great food, reservations may be difficult. Chef Mattia is an Italian from Canazei, a ski resort in the Dolomites. Last season he worked at Snow Pony and this year has moved to Oli’s Kitchen. His assistant Monica is from Abruzzo in central Italy and both love cooking Italian specialties for mountain visitors. This year the menu is
simple but appetising with Zuppa (soup) of the day, Antipasto selections and five pizza selections. The pasta selection emphasises wonderful fresh ingredients with the Genovese a real winner – basil, parsley, olive oil, nuts and pinenuts. M o n i c a ’s favo r i t e though, is pasta alla bolognese and Mattia just loves his spicy salami pizza with fresh tomato and cheese. Both Mattia and Monica love travelling in Australia. They explored Western Australia last summer and plan to visit central and eastern Australia this summer before returning to Mt Buller for the 2014 snow season. Oli’s Kitchen does open to the public on

THE future of Interschool snow sports has been secured for Mt Buller. Mt Buller Interschools Association directors Joel Dixon, Laurie Blampied, Buller Ski Lifts general manager, John Huber, ARMB chief executive officer and inaugural chairperson of the Interschools Association, John Perks, signed an
agreement on Monday to continue the annual championships on the mountain, keeping the sport in Victoria. The Buller Interschools Association is a not-for-proďŹ t organisation that was formed by the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board, Buller Ski Lifts, Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce and
the Mt Buller Ratepayers Association to act as custodian of the current Victorian Interschools Hosting Agreement. With signiďŹ cant contributions from all stakeholders the association aims to make the event an affordable and accessible opportunity for all Victorian students to create lifelong snow sports enthusiasts.

By LIZ WEBB SNOW sports (like beach cricket) is one of the few sporting areas where no matter what your age, gender or capabilities, anyone can participate. To encourage school students to participate in snow sports, the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships were started at Mt Buller in 1958. The ‘Interschools’ continues to evolve and grow, with organisers working to keep it relevant to all. ‘Nationals’ were introduced and new categories for cross country skiers and snowboarders together with new competitive activities such as skiercross, snowboardcross and freestyle moguls provide something for everyone. In 2013 the inaugural Victorian Interschools Multiclass Event will provide an opportunity for school aged students with special needs to compete at the Victorian Interschools in their own event. Supported by Disability Wintersports Australia (DWA) and Special
Olympics Victoria (SOV), entrants will also be able to participate in a three day development camp at Mt Buller including race day. Race coaches include Eric Bickerton, CEO DWA; Sven Erikson, national program manager DWA; Tom Liolios, technical director DWA and Hannah Kennedy, coordinator SOV. The race divisions will replicate existing mainstream events with both individual and team races across all divisions. Around 20 students are expected to compete in the event. Following this the Special Olympics State Championships will be held on the same course. Long time Mt Buller skier Liz Gosper, who teaches at Ashwood Special School, is passionate about the positive community beneďŹ ts that this event will provide. She, and a small group of dedicated teachers and parents who share a common love of snow sports, believe that sport provides common challenges to all and is a wonderful way to promote acceptance and foster understanding and respect. “Including a Multiclass Snow-
sports event for all primary and secondary aged students with special needs as part of the mainstream Interschools event gives our students the opportunity to demonstrate courage and compete safely and conďŹ dently against their peers in a race environment,â€? Liz said. She added that due to encouragement and assistance from all the organising bodies, initial interest in the Multiclass Event has been very positive. “Participating schools include metropolitan Ashwood, Rossbourne, Berendale and from country Victoria, Belvoir School Wodonga,â€? she said. “We also have Jono Walsh, who is a vision impaired skier on a pathway to ski in the Sochi 2014 Paralympics, coming along to give a motivational talk to the students.â€? Liz was keen to add that QANTAS pilot Richard de Crespigny who was recently announced as the new patron of Disabled Wintersport Australia, and his wife Coral, were expected to attend the Multiclass Snowports Awards Dinner at Mt Buller on Tuesday.
In brief No polling station here
MT BULLER is not expected to have a polling station for the federal election on September 7. Those on-mountain, who wish to vote in person on the day, will need to travel to Merrijig. If you wish to vote early though, go to www.aec. gov.au to see about postal and absentee votes.

WRAPPED IN HISTORY: Bobby Richardson sports a 50 year old jumper knitted for Mt Buller by Stella Webster.
A close-knit story of warmth IT’S always nice to give a compliment about someone’s appearance. H o w e v e r, r e c e n t l y, when enjoying afternoon tea at Bindaree Retirement Centre in Mansfield, you can imagine what a surprise it was when Bobby Richardson received a remark about what a fabulous jumper he had on. Bobby was then to tell the story of how Stella Webster, who was sitting next to him at the time, had knitted the jumper more than 50 years ago. It seems Stella was quite a knitter around town (Mansfield) in those early days, and Bobby’s wife Carmel had approached Stella to knit her husband Bobby a jumper for him to go skiing on Mt Buller in. “It’s as good as the day I got it, Bobby said. Bobby said that when
he wore the jumper skiing, he often never needed to wear a jacket as it was fairly waterproof being greaseproof wool. Bobby has fond memories of skiing on Mt Buller in the early days. He first started skiing in 1956 and remembers driving up and parking around the White Bridge area and either Billy Heathcote, Roy Friday or Johnny Coombs would pick them up in the LandRover and take the boys up. With lunch stuck firmly in the pocket, the fellas had a great day. A day on the tow was one pound and Bobby recalls that they spent more money at the Merrijig Pub on the way home. Still to this day the jumper keeps Bobby warm and Stella enjoys admiring her work many years after while sharing an afternoon tea of snowballs at the retirement centre.

THIS Saturday is the running of the annual Angliss Team Challenge (formerly Interclub Racing) on Mt Buller, and all you need are a couple of skiing or boarding friends and the need for a little bit of speed. The event allows teams of three or more skiers and/or snowboarders representing their company, club or team to compete in a competitive, but friendly and fun setting. Racing will involve a morning start on Little Buller Spur, starting at 9am, featuring a top to bottom Giant Slalom race (pending conditions). Each team member will be given two runs and the combined score for the three highest finishing competitors for each team will be used to determine team placing. Teams will be allocated points based on their lowest three individual aggregate times in six team categories, being: Under 16, Open, Masters (30-39), Advanced Masters (40-49), Veterans (50-64), and Super Veterans (65+). With a warm up Apres Ski Party on the Friday night, and Presentation Party on Saturday night, it is a fun weekend for all involved. For more information, go to: www.snowexpo.com.au.

Booth a no go for Buller By DAVID MIMS THE Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has published its expected list of polling stations for the upcoming federal election on September 7 with again no booth for Mt Buller. The website does note, however, that some addresses may be subject to update before ďŹ nalising the details. Drive to the conditions: TAC By DAVID MIMS
THE Traffic Aciident Commission (TAC) has issued a warning to motorists to drive safely in winter conditions. Winter is a time when weather conditions have a big impact on road conditions and driver safety, particularly when travelling to and from snow resorts such as Mt Buller. Factors such as visibility, water, ice and snow on the roads, driver experience, and knowledge of the area you are driving in all influence safety and increase the chances of a bad accident. The TAC website lists a number of safety tips to deal with the variable weather conditions you will experience around
Mansfield and the alpine region. The key tips are: s 2EDUCE SPEED n 2Educe speed in bad weather as your recovery time is better if something goes wrong. s &OG )F YOU SEE FOG and mist ahead reduce speed before you enter it. )N VERY THICK FOG MAKE SURE you always know where you are on the road and never drive at a speed that forces you to guess what is ahead. Avoid overtaking. s 2AIN (EAVY RAIN CAN have the same effect as fog with less visibility making it harder to judge where you are on the road in relation to other vehicles. s )CE $RIVE SLOWLY on ice and snow to retain traction. Braking should be gentle and not left to
EXTREME CONDITIONS: Conditions such as this make driving in the snow very dangerous, so correctly fitted chains are a must. PHOTO: Andrew Railton
the last second, and use an even pressure on the accelerator to lessen the chances of wheel spin and loss of control. s 3UN GLARE "EWARE OF blinding glare from sunlight either directly from
the sun or reflected from other cars and objects, particularly snow. You may need to reduce speed as well as use aids such as the sun visor and sunglasses. s (AZARD LIGHTS 4URN THESE ON IN HAZARDOUS
weather conditions where visibility is reduced. When travelling to the snow, drivers are responsible for checking ahead for the current conditions, and confirming if snow chains are required, regardless of
the type of vehicle they have. )F SNOW IS FORECAST THEN snow chains are required by all vehicles - particularly if staying overnight at the resorts. 2ETAIL BUSINESSES ACcommodation providers, local authorities, and the Mt Buller website all can provide this information, or you can call the resort on 57776077 for current requirements. )N ALMOST ALL CASES snow chains must be carried by two-wheel drive vehicles at all times when going to Mt Buller and Mt 3TIRLING BUT MAY VARY FOR all-wheel and four-wheel drives. #HAIN SIZE REQUIREMENTS will vary according to the MAKE MODEL AND TYRE SIZE on your vehicle.

A friendly place to call home
Kooroora’s history rich with life, memories and mateship after 60 years of operation
IN THE HOOHAH: Susan Raidel and Rudi Renz have operated the Hoohah Kitchen at Kooroora Hotel for the past four years enjoying more than 40 years’ friendship on the mountain.
AN iconic Mt Buller business celebrated 60 years of operation this year. A place of happy gatherings, Kooroora on Mt Buller has lived up to its name for the past 60 years. But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the establishment. Officially opening in 1953, the Kooroora Hotel opened its doors with 35 commercial and nine staff beds and replaced the first ‘eating house’ on the mountain, the Bull Run Canteen, established by the Forras brothers Ernest and Aurel. The Forras brothers became known as the ‘hospitality pioneers’ of the mountain. However, in 1961 the original Kooroora Hotel burnt down. Rebuilt the following year, Kooroora remains the same building today with the main part of it largely unchanged. After changing hands from one Forras brother to the other, alternating over some years, Ernest sold the hotel to Arthur Tan who in turn sold it to the Arlberg’s then owner, Adam Adams. A consortium led by John Perks purchased it from Adams, and Richard Paine bought it in 1994.
In 1996 Paine dramatically changed the internal layout of the hotel, removing the ageing carpets, polishing the floorboards and putting in a functional bar. It was about this same time that Richard Paine and Anton Vanhoff (joint owners) reintroduced live music to the venue and regained its reputation for being a social focal point. Paine and Vanhoff sold the building to the Grollo Group in 2001 but leased back the hotel operations side. The Kooroora (incorporating the Hoohah Kitchen) is renowned for its hospitality. The after dark bar is the favorite gathering place for many of the younger generation members on the mountain. It is also the place to go for those looking for an early breakfast or a hot and cosy lunch. Live music, cold beers and hot foods are all the go at Kooroora. Today the Hoohah Kitchen is operated by business partners, Susan Raidel and Rudi Renz, both long time and well known identities on the mountain. This is Susan and Rudi’s
fourth year at the Hoohah, however, Susan first came to Buller to work in 1974 and Rudi in 1976 - making them friends for more than 40 years. The Hoohah serves an eclectic menu with pasta, hot winter soups, braised beef cheeks, chicken souvlakis just to name a few. “A bit of everything, but we have incorporated a steak night for Thursdays, and we have also moved into Thai foods with delicious salads,” Susan said. Susan and Rudi - working in partnership over winter for the past four snow seasons, also have a history in catering around the district for many more years. Rudi has at times leased such venues as the Hunt Club, Jamieson Pub and now owns and operates (through summer) the Old Fire Station Restaurant in Mansfield. Susan in the past has operated the Produce Store (for five years), was the original owner of Tarts Cafe in Mansfield and last summer worked at Cafe 41. The Hoohah Kitchen opens at 8am and closes at 9.30pm with the hotel and bars continuing on until the traditional ‘That’s Amore’ is played around 3am.

Lack of snow no barrier for young competitors Entrants make do with substitute cross country course THE Subaru Victorian Interschool XC Championships held on Mt Buller drew competitors from across the state, but due to the lack of snow the heats were held on Bourke Street. The Cross Country Classical and Cross Country Relay (a skate event) are very popular. They have also served as a very important means of introducing many Vic-
torian school children to the sport of cross country skiing. Over many years Mt Buller has provided a wonderful venue for this competition, and many of the sport’s elite athletes have risen through the various Interschools Age Divisions and gone on to represent Australia at World Cups, World Championships, and also the Olympics.
STAYING AHEAD: Melbourne Grammar’s Steve De Camp (83C) concentrates on his cross country run as a competitor comes up behind him.
OFF I GO: Catherine Lobbe (259) competing in the Subaru cross country heats for Ivanhoe Girls Grammar sets off down Bourke Street.
ZIG ZAG: Mt Buller’s Bourke Street became a makeshift cross country ski course for the heats of the Subaru competition recently - luckily by the time the finals arrived more snow had also rained down on the resort.
ON YOUR MARK: Melbourne Ladies College competitor Sarah Crosby (253) was set to race in the cross country heats during the Subaru heats.

Bumping the night away THE Bumps ‘Ol Skool Party’ held at the Dump Inn at the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) on Saturday, August 17, was a wild night. Dressed in school uniforms, 80s ski gear and other assorted fancy dress, more than 250 partied hard to the tunes of the Urban Playboys to raise funds for the Ski Club of Victoria Snowsports Development Foundation and Mt Buller Volunteer Ski Patrol. Almost $6000 was raised with Ski Patrol selling T-shirts and badges plus auctioning off a ‘Ski Around with a Patroller’ and a Skidoo ride. Peter Haley from Bumps Snow, Surf & Skate in Elsternwick provided plenty of great raffle prizes including skis, goggles and $2000 worth of KJUS fashion wear which was won by head of Ski Patrol Sam McDougall. Ski Patrol and SCV agreed the event was one of the mountain’s most successful collaborations.

Learning a mountain of fun Mansfield Primary School Mt Buller annexe continues to go from strength to strength
By LIZ WEBB SCHOOL on Mt Buller is a fun place to be. The secret is out, and the Mansfield Primary School at Mt Buller just keeps on expanding. This year there are 70 prep to grade six students and three full time teachers – Lesley Dunlop, now chief administrator, Sue Steele who has returned for her sixth year and Melanie Karlson. The school operates daily on Monday to Thursday from 9am to 3pm with two 30 minute breaks and on Friday students participate in snowsports. Students come from all over Victoria, South Australia and Mansfield and the atmosphere is vibrant,
warm and very inviting. However, lots of serious work also takes place. For example, interstate students are taught the Victorian school curriculum but must also keep up with their own state’s requirements. Though relatively isolated, some interesting school projects take place. A couple of year five and six students were excited about their cooking project which involved many and varied skills including group discussion and designing of a menu, decision making and reporting on the process and creating the actual menu, negotiating with parents for ingredients, cooking space and time; and finally class evaluation of each group’s actual cooked outcomes.
General consensus was that the four-tiered multicolored cake produced by four different groups of students was the highlight of the exercise. Other unique events also occur at the school. Recently students were visited by Greg Snell, Canadian winner of the ‘Greatest Job in the World’ competition run by Tourism Australia. Greg, who is a passionate skier, was interviewed by students who discovered that following your passion in life can lead to great career opportunities. In years to come, as the product of the Mansfield Primary School, Mt Buller annexe students will be leaders in their chosen professions.

There’s more to it than sponsorship
ONE thing that goes along with snowboarding and a lot of sports is the desire to be good and get recognised for doing well. Snowboarders love free stuff, who doesn’t? Getting hooked up means someone is supporting you in someway to represent their products. Sponsorship is not as generous as it used to be years ago, but companies are always looking to get their gear promoted. Brands are always looking for new people to represent their companies whether it be a t-shirt, new boots or whatever, but it is getting tougher. Be honest and realistic with who you approach. If you would love just a couple of t-shirts, some stickers or a hoodie tell them that. Introduce yourself, start small and get your foot in the door. Here are a couple of ideas of how to go about it: ride, ride and ride some more. The more you are on the hill ripping around, the more people will notice and see not only that you’re ripping but
you genuinely love snowboarding. Don’t come across arrogant and too cool for school, brands want friendly professional ambassadors for their products. Compete as much as you can, or get out there and get coverage - whether it be a blog, shots in mags, or edits. The more coverage you have out there the better, everyone has a camera these days so drag your friend out and take shots of each other. One thing to note here is only put your best out there - quality over quantity - there are millions of “sponsor me” videos on You Tube. Go one step further and build a professional resume and send it to the company who you would love to represent. Sponsorship should be the icing on the cake to an already great lifestyle, and not why you are snowboarding. Always remember why you started snowboarding: “because it’s fun”.
