IT’S SNOWING: At last reasonable snow fall at Mt Buller over the past week has rescued what could have been classed as a bad winter. But as Lucy and Christian Nation of Lilydale discovered last Saturday when it snows - it’s fun. Some 29cm of snow fell across the resort giving skiers and snowboarders their first real taste of winter this season and school holiday makers the chance to really play. PHOTO: Andrew Railton.

Yellow helpers on the slopes THE famous ‘Yellow Coats’ at Mt Buller, worn by Guest Services personnel, represent help, information and troubleshooting. Guest Services comprises people who have generally worked on Mt Buller and who act as the frontline workforce, meeting, greeting and problem solving for guests who visit the resort. This year Guest Services has added two mountain ‘icons’ to the team - Chris Redmond and Terry (Speaky) Lyons. Their combined knowledge of the mountain is legendary. Chris Redmond (Mr Hospitality as he has been known for many years) has been part of the Australian Ski Industry for more than 30 years. What Chris doesn’t know about the hospitality industry is not worth knowing. Chris worked at Thredbo and in Switzerland and came back to Australia to manage ABOM then Spurs and was put in

charge of the ‘new’ chalet in 1995. Chris’s love of Mt Buller makes him an ideal leader in the field of guest services and he is always amazed at the quality of product and service that the mountain provides to visitors. One of the original ‘boys from Torquay’, Mt Buller has always been

Speaky’s (Lyons) mountain. In those early days he would sleep in his Volkswagen and take on any jobs that were offered, including working for Aural Forras, helping rebuild the Ski Club of Victoria in 1968 and then joining Ski Patrol in 1979. Speaky and partner Pam, also owned the Off

Piste shop for 15 years. After 33 years as one of Mt Buller’s best known patrollers, Speaky retired last year, returning this year to pass on his mountain knowledge to locals and visitors. If you see Chris and Speaky around the village, stop for a chat, you’ll be amazed at the stories you’ll hear.

MT Buller is continuing with its waste reduction and recycling program with the latest installation being OSCA (on site composting aparatus). OSCA is Mt Buller’s brand new on-site largescale composting system, which is the latest addition to the award-winning Living Bin Program. Mount Buller Mount Stirling Resort Management, working with 4Site Australia and North East Regional Waste Management Group (NevRWaste), are trialling OSCA this year to determine the viability of processing

organic waste on-site. Not only is this great for the environment, but it is also great because it adds to Mount Buller’s remarkably sustainable reputation. Erin Duddy is Mt Buller’s Living Bin Champion for 2013. It is Erin’s job to work with lodges, restaurants and food outlets to make it easy and viable for all to contribute to the sustainability of the Mt Buller community. It is also Erin’s job to make sure OSCA is put to good use. In 2010 a trial was conducted with willing participants across the Mt

Buller Village to separate organic waste from general waste and recyclable material. More than 30,000kg of organic waste was diverted from landfill in the first winter season. This project (OSCA) aims to reduce costs of waste disposal, reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, and is a process that will significantly contribute to the sustainability of the resort. Anyone on the mountain can sign up to grab a 20L or 7.2L bin and bags to separate their organic waste within their accommodation or workplace.

Celebrating victory for Buller’s own MT Buller ambassador for cycling, Simon Gerrans, was on the lips of all on Mt Buller last week when he wore the Tour de France yellow jersey. Gerrans is only the sixth Australian to wear the coveted yellow jersey and became a home town hero overnight. Although Gerrans has taken out other titles in his professional

cycling career such as winning the Tour of Denmark and winning stages in all three major tours, this latest win is the highlight of his career. Gerrans is a regular visitor to Mt Buller specially during summer months when he is home from Europe competitions - using the climb to the top as part of his training.

Ready for learning

By PETER HUNT WHEN term three begins next week, the Mansfield Secondary College (MSC) Annexe on Mt Buller will again be in operation. The college is extremely pleased with the response for enrolments to the annexe, with 34 students, 27 being from MSC and the remaining from Melbourne and regional Victoria plus one student from Brisbane, ready for a term on the mountain. The annexe is an accredited campus of MSC, which was successful in obtaining a ‘seed’ grant from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) in 2012. Earlier this year the Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) granted registration of the annexe as an ofďŹ cial campus of MSC. “Fundamentally the MSC Mt Buller annexe was established to give local secondary students an opportunity to continue their education in an alternate setting, while developing skills in their chosen on-snow disciplines,â€? snow

SNOW STUDIES: Students from Mansfield Secondary College ready for a term at the Mt Buller Annexe included (from left, back) Patrick Cahill, Flynn Bowker, Jack Christopher and Nick Howland; (middle) Victoria Wallace, Remy Potter, Eve Lawson, Xavier Fox and Charlie Comben; (front) Talae Rodden, Mary Henry, Kaitlyn Whyte, Daniel Walker and Ned Angliss. sports coordinator Geoff Walker said. “In addition it also provides Mt Buller residents and seasonal worker’s children a secondary facility during the snow season. “The annexe is especially exciting for emerging athletes wishing to pursue their progression within the athlete pathway.

Morning training is provided through Buller Ski & Snowboard School (all-mountain technical and cross-training), Team Buller Riders (moguls and freeride), Transition Snowboarding and Mt Buller Race Club. Classrooms are within the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resort Management

Board (ARMB) ‘Alpine Central’ building and MSC credit the ARMB with their generous support for classroom space and many logistical elements in establishing the annexe. Students will concentrate on the core subject areas of science, english, maths and humanities supplied from MSC and

their home schools. Specialist staff will support their studies in four-hour sessions every afternoon from Monday to Friday. “The MSC School Council acknowledges the support in 2012 from the ‘Mark Adams Ski & Golf Challenge’, BSRA, Buller Ski Lifts, MBRC and ARMB who collectively contributed $9000 to the establishment of the annexe,â€? Mr Walker added. “The set up costs in 2012 were in the order of $60,000, offset largely from the $50,000 ‘seed grant’ and student contributions. “This year, using the balance of the ‘seed’ grant, MSC is able to ďŹ nancially operate the campus fully independently of external subsidy and will actively seek avenues through the DEECD and ARMB for long-term sustainability.â€? The students are certainly looking forward to this unique experience with much enthusiasm, which will not only build their on-snow skills, but also equip them with many opportunities and life skills not necessarily gained in a traditional classroom setting.

Chef prepares a taste sensation for Buller guests CAMERON Aitken has worked at Mt Buller Chalet for a little over a year now and has just been promoted to head chef. He started at the chalet as a junior sous chef. “My philosophy about food is to keep it simple and allow the flavors of what your cooking to do the hard work, Cameron said. “I believe that this approach helps achieve the dish and the flavors you want. A speciality of the Black Cockatoo is suckling pig - sourced locally from High Country Free Range Pork of Tolmie. Cameron buys the suckling pigs slaughtered and hung but still whole and cuts them up to suit the dishes required. “The whole pig is used in a dish that we are currently offering at the Black Cockatoo, Cameron said. “The roasted free range Suckling Pig, with Cotechino sausage, herb dumplings in a parsley pork broth is by far one of my favorite dishes

Young snow stars are impressing the older shredders

AMAZING: The film crew of Channel 9’s Postcards program were amazed at the array of items on display and described by museum curator Michelle Stevenson at the National Alping Museum on Mt Buller.

TOM & ME: Ratty had the chance to ride with her nephew Thomas this winter in Jackson Hole. Getting kids amped on snowboarding is a lot of fun.

for easy use, perfect for the tiniest of mini shredders. Burton has a great kids boot. It features good insulation, large easy to use velcro straps and a good sole for traction on snow. It also has a room to grow foot bed, which has the option to gain one full size. Kids are now getting on boards as early as three, some even earlier thanks to the new Riglet design. The Riglet accessory attaches to the nose of the smaller Burton boards to tow the peewee ones around until they are ready to use bindings. There are Riglet parks

that are specifically designed for kids aged 3-6 years to get a taste of snowboarding in an easy, fun and safe environment. There have been some demo Riglet parks in Melbourne and Sydney and hopefully we will see many more happening soon. Kids Burton LTR boards are available for hire at Mt Buller sports central. Mt Buller Snowboard School offers group lessons for ages 7-14. Children from as young as three and up to any age can take a private lesson. High five a mini shredder today.

Postcards television appearance something to write home about CHANNEL 9’s popular, long running travel show Postcards was amazed to discover Mt Buller’s National Alpine Museum (NAMA) down at Level 1, Alpine Central. The crew were also amazed at the extent of the NAMA collection and had a hard time choosing which of the many interesting items they should film. NAMA curator Michelle Stevenson talked about the large

assortment of historic wooden skis, Olympic memorabilia, retro posters and postcards (also on sale at the museum). However, it was the original snow fashion items which proved to be the highlight for the film team. TV presenter Brodie Harper fell in love with one of NAMA’s prize exhibits, an exquisite, floral appliquéd ski jacket from the 40’s hand made by Rosalie Kiessling

THE number of mini shredders out on the slopes is growing every year, thanks to the great new snowboard setups available for hire and to buy. There have been leaps and bounds in developing kids specific equipment, enabling children to have a go at snowboarding much younger than before. Many brands now have a kid’s board and bindings in their range, but the brand that I have used in teaching and recommend is Burton. Using children’s specific snowboarding equipment is key to enjoyment and success in learning. The Burton LTR (learn to ride) boards feature a soft flex, radical sidecut, and forgiving edge bevel, all of which are designed to reduce the likelihood of catching an edge and to maximise progression and fun. The combo of a catchfree convex base and the softest flex possible makes it fun for even the lightest weight riders to master turning and stopping. The flat profile between the feet adds stability for better balance and board control. The Grom binding is a lightweight soft binding. It has an oversized buckle and single strap

Lodges toast 50 years of success By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY AT the opening of the ski season each year milestones are recorded and recognised. This year was no different with certificates of recognition being awarded to three of the mountain’s lodges that celebrate 50 years this season. Representatives from each lodge accepted their certificates. In announcing the lodges Mt Buller-Mt Stirling Alpine Resorts Management Board chairman, Jennifer Hutchison said without the lodges

Mt Buller would not have developed and progressed as it has. “It is the formation and membership of these lodges in the early days in particular that helped to set the atmopshere of this mountain resort. “Without them Mt Buller would not be what it is today,” Ms Hutchison said. Three three lodges this year to receive awards were SkiLib Alpine Club, Coonamar Ski Club and Firmow Ski Club. BOARDING ABILITY (AND BE HONEST!): Awesome advanced expert.

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN SKIING AT MT BULLER:

The world’s largest ski region!

I started nine years ago when I came up to Uni at Mt Buller to study for the Outdoor Ed diploma. Someone suggested I’d make a great instructor, so I keep coming back.

450 lifts, 45 ski resorts, 12 huge valleys… all on one, inexpensive Superski Pass! Stunning alpine scenery

FAVE RUNS/AREAS: Definitely Wombat and Standard and when the snow is good, the Summit Schutes. Love the Terrain Park as well but big jumps rather than rails.

The Dolomites Mountains of northern Italy are a revelation to Australians. Here, it is truly possible to ski as far as the eye can see! You and your friends or family can ski together, over long distances, and through many different ski resorts. It's the ski holiday of a lifetime. The variety of runs and challenges is almost daunting, with seemingly countless runs for every type of skier or boarder. You can ski

EVER SKIED OVERSEAS: I’ve done two seasons at Snowbird, Utah. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT MT BULLER: It’s got to be the people, especially return staff. It’s like a big happy family at Buller. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR SEASON 2013: Working, riding, socialising. WHEN NOT NOT OUT ON THE SLOPES YOU ARE DOING: ‘Hanging out’ with

friends and the odd bit of Stand Up Comedy - keep watching for (Tom is a very funny guy and has been MC at previous Mt Buller Comedy nights). THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE BOARDING AT MT BULLER: Fun, Freedom on Snow, Love.

45–75km in a day without having to catch the same lift twice! And our guides always know the best places to ski, eat and see on any given day. The Dolomites offer a superb blend of skiing, food, culture and unspoiled alpine beauty. Best of all, it’s still undiscovered by Australians, and it’s all here in the unforgettable Dolomites.

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY ESTONIA is a long way from Mt Stirling but for the next three months the high country ski resort will be home for four young European travellers. Siim Eilo, Inna Kairite, Karl Laasik and Piibe Tammemae have taken on the challenge of instructing young Australians and visitors in the ďŹ ner points of cross country skiing and snow boarding. Arrivng in Australia just over a week ago the young foursome are excited about spending time here and learning more about Australia, its curious animals and our culture. A chef by profession, Siim hopes to be able to stay on after and once his stint at Mt Stirling to gain more experience for his culinary skills. Inna and Piibe are

both students of sports science and for Inna she has only been at university for one year, while Piibe is a teacher in sports already, having qualiďŹ ed. Karl has taken on a different tack and has just completed his first year university studies in mechanical engineering. When asked what they most expected to gain from their time in Australia they all agreed they wanted to improve their language skills, culture knowledge,

to get a good expereince of the Australian way of life, see kangaroos and koalas and to make some good friends. The Estonia four will soon have another international ski instructor with Marty Henzi arriving from Canada. “In Estonia we don’t have mountains, just hills, said Siim. “The highest hills we have only reach about 350 metres so it is all cross country skiing for us there.

Each of the instructors also agreed cross country skiing is a good sport and it ďŹ ts very well with their working holiday here. Inna also has experience in orienteering so will use those skills when working with school groups. Although the students will be staying with Craig and Barb Jones during their three months here they also plan to ‘camp out’ at the Cricket Pitch camp site when school groups are in. Mt Stirling has been home to other young students from Estonia, this being the third year that Craig and Barb have hosted the international guests. Visitors to Mt Stirling can chose from 1.5 hour classes available at 10am, noon and 2pm daily. Children’s learn to ski lessons and games are available for youngsters aged between six and 14.

Comedy takes a serious approach to office issues BULLER visitors looking for a cultural touch to their ski holiday may wish to come to Mansfield to see Brilliant Lies for one of it’s six performances from July 19 to 27. Directed by Ian Mallyon, produced by Michele Padbury, and featuring some new and old faces on stage, the serious comedy, addresses the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace, as it delves into the truths, half truths, and lies when accusations arise in the workplace. Conflict between the

sexes has always intrigued Williamson and it is at the heart of this play which was written in the early nineties. The play is set in the offices of LifeChoice Options, an office gym, and in the homes of two of the seven characters. With a quality cast, director, and production team, this MMuDS show will entertain and challenge you about issues of sexual harassment and anti-discrimination in a world of changing social values. Opening night is Friday, July 19, then Saturday 20th, both at 8pm, Sunday 21st matinee at 2pm, Thursday
