ANITA

By KYLIE WILSON IT’S a long way from the hills of Porepunkah to the competitive comedy circuits of Edinburgh and London – but that is the path that comedian David Quirk has managed to forge over the past few years. The self described “dark and confronting” comedian said he has always loved making people laugh. “I noticed it at primary school,” Mr Quirk said. “My earliest memory was when we had to do some skit of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle for the Christmas concert at the Porepunkah hall, and I was Mulga Bill. “I had to ride around on a little trike bike and I just rode it like an idiot. “I don’t remember what I did exactly, something with my face. “But the teacher laughed a lot. “I knew I was doing something OK if I made the teacher laugh.” That early episode helped fuel his comedic ambitions. “I used to say I wanted to be a comedian, though I hardly knew what that meant,” Mr Quirk said. “I also wanted to be a fighter pilot back then, but that meant doing two things I’m against: killing people and hard work. “Comedy it was, then.” From tentative early gigs at venues as diverse as Victoria University and the Wandiligong Nut Festival to performing on the cutthroat stages of Edinburgh, and even making a cameo appearance in the recent continued page |

Waterlilies

Town:

Rebecca Donnellan Wangaratta

WATERLILIES are beautiful aquatic plants that thrive in garden ponds and containers. They are the feature plant with their rounded green leaves and star-shaped flowers that float delicately on the surface of the water. Waterlilies not only add beauty to a water feature, they provide shade and shelter for fish. The shade helps keep the water temperature cooler during the summer and also helps to reduce algae growth. There are about 70 species of Nymphaea, commonly known as waterlilies, which are native to Australia, South Africa and the Northern Hemisphere. They come in a wide variety of colors, from vivid reds through to shades of cyclamen and pink, lemon, yellow, apricot, white and blue. Water lilies are divided into two groups - hardy, which come from cooler climates and will survive even severe frosts, and tropical varieties which have blue blooms and are delicately fragranced. Flowering time depends on the warmth of the water but water lilies usually start flowering in October and finish flowering at the end of April. They are sold as dormant rhizomes, similar to a bulb, and are available now ready for planting.

The best way to plant them is to first plant them in a pot and then submerge the pot in the water. Prepare the pot by placing manure or fertiliser in the bottom of the pot, add garden soil, not potting mix as this is too light and will simply wash away. Place the rhizome in the centre of the pot, cover with more garden soil, then top with a 3cm layer of course sand and gravel to hold everything in place and stop the fish from pulling the plants out. Finally, submerge the pot slowly to allow the air to bubble out before positioning in the water. Water lilies require at least five hours of sunlight to flower, although apricot water lilies are more shade tolerant and will cope with just an hour or two of sunlight a day. Waterlilies add grace to any pond or container, so consider planting some in your water feature. Happy gardening.

VETS CORNER

ABC hit series It’s A Date, Mr Quirk has seen his profile rise ever higher over the years. But he does not see himself as a run of the mill comedian. “The comedy I do is not really focused on punchlines, or even jokes,” he said. “It’s often true and strange, and sometimes dark and confronting. “I make material from the things that interest me the most, and I find that tends to be a bit weird most of the time. “I make an effort for it to be something unique.” Currently performing in England, one of his most recent rounds of performances was at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, his third visit there. This trip was one with a difference, as he used the crowdfunding website Pozible in order to fund it, an experience Mr Quirk describes as “brilliant”. “It was very humbling to see people actually give to me, or to my idea. “I think, in a way, it might be the future for creative ideas or artists needing funding in Australia. “I recommend it completely now that I’ve experienced such great help and selflessness from friends and strangers.” But while he has embraced crowdfunding, unlike many comedians, he steers clear of Twitter. “People shouldn’t just write what’s on their mind all the time, I don’t think.” While he enjoyed heading to Edinburgh for his third visit, David said that he was embraced more by audiences during his recent London performances. “Performing at the Soho theatre was one of the best experiences I’ve had doing comedy. “The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is great, but it’s also like a trade show in many ways. “It’s about the industry and reviews and how many stars you have on a poster.

Ferret friends FERRETS have long been used to hunt rabbits, however, they can also make great pets. They have an inquisitive nature, are very interactive and enjoy human companionship. Ferrets come in a range of colors, including sable, albino and cinnamon, and have a life expectancy of 5-9 years. Ferrets can often nip and bite, however training them from a young age that this is not acceptable behavior will reduce this tendency. As they like to explore their environment, it is best to keep ferrets in an enclosure when they are not under direct supervision. A ferret enclosure should include things like boxes and tunnels for the ferrets to play in and explore. It also needs to have somewhere small and cosy to sleep, food, water and a litter box. Ferrets can easily be taught to use a litter tray, to avoid any accidents around the house. Ferrets are carnivores and are best fed either a commercial ferret or dry kitten food as these contain the necessary high levels of protein. They also enjoy raw, meaty bones which can help to keep their teeth clean. Soft fruits such as pear and melon can

DARK HUMOR: David performing. PHOTO: Stano Murin

“When I got to London I performed with one of my favorite comedians, Stewart Lee, and that was a pleasure and a highlight for me.” And through his career, support from family and friends has always encouraged him. “My mum was always the best to me, she encouraged me as a performer the most. “My dad has been great and supported me a lot. “I would like to thank a man named Jim French too, my old English teacher from Marian College in Myrtleford in the 1990s.” And Mr Quirk said he finds inspiration anywhere, no matter how absurd or dark. “Anything could inspire my material, but it’s usually something unusual. “The lady from the Scotsman newspaper wrote that a piece of material was ‘radical, dark and hilariously appalling’. “I still use that quote on my posters and flyers.”

also be fed as an occasional treat. Desexing is highly recommended for pet ferrets, in males it helps to improve behavior and reduce the musky smell. In females, desexing prevents serious health problems that can develop if they are not mated when they come on heat. All pet ferrets are susceptible to, and should be vaccinated against, canine distemper. This requires two vaccinations initially followed by an annual booster. So next time you are considering a new pet, consider getting a friendly, furry ferret. Amanda Walker, Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital

WRONG ANIMAL: A Rose River black snake. The snake to trout ratio of 1:1 was not ideal when Brett Corker and I fished the Rose River on Sunday. We saw two of each, two snakes and two trout. The trout fishing has been incredibly tough right across the region this season.

More snakes than fish THE recent bout of warm weather we are experiencing has flicked the yellowbelly switch in a big way right across Victoria in the last couple of weeks. Just about any waterway that has yellowbelly in it has been starting to fire. Lakes Hume and Eildon have both picked up a few notches with quite a few yellowbelly being caught in both, including one report of a very large yellowbelly of around 15lb being caught in Lake Hume on a black and purple Jackall near Kookaburra Point during the week. Lake Nillahcootie has also seen a few yellowbelly being caught on bait, with small yabbies producing the best results. The yellowbelly in Lake Nillahcootie are generally not as big as those in the other mentioned lakes. The entire Broken River has been

N/A

producing yellowbelly, while I have also heard yellowbelly reports from further afield in the Loddon and Campaspe rivers. Locally I have heard of people catching no shortage of carp in the Ovens River right here in Wangaratta as the river continues to drop and clear up. The trout fishing continues to be tough. Brett Corker and I fished the Rose River on Sunday, and let me tell you, you know you’ve had a bad day’s fishing when you see more snakes than you do fish. I hooked two small trout, both of which got off and that was it. All indicators are pointing towards a very tough summer for trout fishing in this area. I am yet to hear reports of redfin from Lake WIlliam Hovell or Lake Buffalo, but if this warm weather continues it will not be long until redfin start getting caught at both lakes.

Big Wheel and Others by Cass McCombs BIG WHEEL and Others is further proof of McCombs’ status as one of his generation’s most visionary songwriters – as uncompromising, radical and counter-cultural as any other artist working today. McCombs’ most ambitious and stylistically diverse release to date, the twenty-two song long Big Wheel and Others is a marvel of great beauty, insight, humor and mystery that sees McCombs at the peak of his mercurial powers – his restless muse making stops at all the strangest roadsides of rock and roll, blues, jazz, country and more on its quest for understanding. BOOK

All the Truth That’s In Me by Julie Berry FOUR years ago, Judith and her best friend disappeared from their small town, but only Judith returned, permanently mutilated, reviled and ignored by her friends and family. But when her town is attacked, long-buried secrets come to light, and Judith is forced to choose – to continue living in silence, or recover her voice, even if it means changing her world, and the lives around her, forever. Published by HarperCollins

Grumpy old women A FEW years ago, as a relative of mine approached her 50th birthday, she confessed that she was becoming quite intolerant in her ‘old age’. She explained that her intolerance was (somewhat inexplicably) mainly focused on women of ‘a certain age’. That age being anywhere from about 55 upwards. At the time, she was working in a veterinary surgery and the women she took exception to were mainly well-coiffed ladies with designer dogs called “Schnookums” and “Prudence” who invariably whinged about some aspect of their pampered poochs’ care. My relative admitted rather embarrassedly that, on more than one occasion, she had actually felt the urge to punch these women and was quite shocked at her sudden distaste for them. It all seemed quite out of character for this lady who is not only an incredibly loving person but had also been a wonderfully caring nurse. This was the same woman who had many times come home from work in tears at the passing of one of her beloved patients and who welled up at the sight of babies and toilet tissue ads. I wondered if perhaps this sudden fury with older women came from a deep seated aversion to getting older herself. After all, who among us relishes the idea of growing old? Maybe her subconscious was wrangling with this disconcerting thought and the grumbling old chicks at the surgery just served to bring it all to the surface? Fortunately, her abhorrence of older women eventually passed but now it’s my turn to acknowledge that I’m turning into a bit of a grumpy old lady myself. Not normally one to embrace confrontation, I have lately found myself doing the cranky thing. I first noticed it when I was on the phone to a solicitor’s office trying to sort out a confusing request. After receiving very little assistance (in fact, being told to “speak to your own solicitor about

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK it”) I heard myself retorting very crisply; “No. I want you to explain it. After all, you are the ones requesting it.” I eventually got off the phone and looked at the rather bemused faces of my son and his partner who had clearly overheard my uncharacteristically abrupt remarks. “You right there, Mum?” said Number Two, cocking his eyebrow. “Anyone else you’d like to shout at while we’re here?” A picture of my cranky relative shot into my mind and I wondered if I was on the slippery slope into grumpy old womanhood. That thought was confirmed a few weeks later when I attempted to contact Telstra regarding my internet connection (or lack thereof). It took me six phone calls to get it sorted, but that was only after I’d been hung up on, transferred to the wrong department and had spoken at length to someone who was about as clued up on internet connections as I am on brain surgery. At one stage I stopped a woman who was about to put me on hold (again) and asked her if I was paying for the call. She said yes, so I (yes, cranky me) asked her to call me back as it wasn’t fair I should be paying to rectify a problem I had not caused. I was then put through to someone with a very thick accent I couldn’t decipher (whom I eventually hung up on in frustration) before finally speaking to someone who concluded that the fault was not Telstra’s but that my ‘internet filter’ must be faulty and I needed to go and buy another one. I was not a happy camper. And thus, when I received the email asking about my experience with Telstra, I let them have it. I’m not proud of cranky me but I must admit, it did feel good at the time and I’m actually wondering if it’s all in the genes anyway? Which would be quite convenient, really. For if I suddenly get an urge to wallop some innocent, well-coiffed lady walking her poodle in my direction, at least I’ll have some kind of (albeit lame) explanation.

WINE TALK

IN MY KITCHEN

Chambers Rosewood Vineyards

Apple and rhubarb pie

Muscadelle

POTTERING around my garden lately, planting lettuce, basil and tomatoes, I noticed the rhubarb was starting to flourish and grow quite large. I picked quite a few stalks and poached some in orange juice and sugar for breakfast. With the small amount I had left, I decided to make my favorite apple pie. This recipe has always been a big hit with the family at The Consulate, and I love the combination of the apple and rhubarb together.

Around $17.00

WITH ANITA McPHERSON Muscadelle from Rutherglen. This amazing amber colored wine is a divine way to end an evening, with a deep and exotic floral rose bouquet, lush and earthy honeyed sultana flavor, and lingering length. Imagine a rich sultana cake smothered in golden syrup with a hint of musk spice and you get the drift, and serving it with vanilla ice cream is a great idea. Maybe I’m no longer treating our pewter with the reverence it deserves, but when it’s a goblet of Chambers Muscadelle, there’s definitely something both regal and decadent about it. Don’t miss it when you visit the tasting bar at Chambers Rosewood Vineyards in Rutherglen, and remember it’s also available by the flagon.

Method (Apple & Rhubarb Pie)

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

A stern sentence, 1878 ELLEN Kelly was sentenced to three years’ gaol for her part in the attempted murder of Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick at the Kelly homestead at Greta. Fitzpatrick, who had gone to the Kelly house to arrest Dan Kelly on a charge of horse stealing, said he had been set upon

by Ellen Kelly, William Skillion and William Williamson, and that Ned Kelly had fired at him, wounding him in the wrist. Bill Skillion and William “Brickie” Williamson each received six years for aiding and abetting the attempted murder of Fitzpatick.

Toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice to stop them browning. Melt the butter in a large frying pan, add apples and cook for five minutes or until slightly softened. Add the rhubarb and the sugar, cook for one minute further. Add the flour and the cinnamon, stir gently to combine. Allow to cool. After 30 minutes, place two thirds of the pastry between plastic wrap dusted with flour and roll out to about 4mm thick. Lightly press into a 23cm pie tin and refrigerate while you roll out remaining pastry. When the filling is cool, spread the apple and the rhubarb mix evenly into the pie shell. Cover with the remaining rolled out pastry. Trim, press edges of the pie firmly together and crimp the outer rim with your fingertips. Cut a couple of holes in the centre of the pie top. Sprinkle with castor sugar. Bake in a 180 degrees Celsius preheated oven for one hour, or until the crust is golden brown (watch closely, and turn down the oven if it starts to burn on the edges, as it browns quickly).

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON Method (Shortcrust Pastry) Place flour, icing sugar, salt and butter in a food processor, and process until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add just enough buttermilk for the mixture to form a ball. Divide the dough into balls, wrap each in plastic wrap and flatten to a round shape the size of your dish (this makes it easier to roll out when ready). Refrigerate for about 30 minutes before using.

THERE was once a time when pewter was the luxury gift of choice for birthdays and weddings, and every man who turned 21 received a pewter mug and a big wooden key. I even remember pewter goblets given away to contestants on shows like Sale of the Century, packed in a silk lined box from Royal Selangor, and probably inscribed with the show’s logo. But like fussy crystal glasses, pewter seemed to disappear from our lives, and it’s a shame because while they’ll set your teeth on edge if you’re not careful, they are a top choice for the outdoors. Just throw them in the boot if you’re heading out because they’re virtually indestructible, and they keep your beverage icy cold in even the hottest weather. Sipping Tokay from a pewter goblet by the fire used to be a real treat, and just for fun I did it the other day with a Chambers

Acne can hit at any stage of life

Do I downsize or not?

ACNE is a skin condition that can affect anyone in any stage of life. Acne is commonly found in teenagers but can also affect adults. Self esteem, self-confidence, and your general outlook on life can be affected when you have acne. Presenting in many forms, from oily skin to dry flaky skin, acne can mostly affect the face, but can also occur on the chest and upper back. Acne develops as a result of blockages in skin follicles, followed by the formation of a sebum (oil) and keratin plug. This plug enlarges as the sebum production increases with hormonal fluctuations resulting in acne. Treatment can vary according to individual needs, however, a few simple guidelines can help alleviate acne symptoms. 1. Hydration: drinking water to aid in removal of excessive oil, waste and toxins. Adequate hydration also helps moisten your skin which reduces the likelihood of your pores clogging. Add lemon juice to water for added flavor. 2. Diet: Limit stimulants such as coffee, tea, cigarettes, and excessive sugar from sweets and soda. Not only do these stimulants affect your entire body they also increase

the secretion of sebum. Increasing fruits and vegetables in the diet will increase your antioxidant status and alkalise your body which will help your body heal. 3. Cleanse: use a gentle cleansing product, preferably with as little additives and preservatives as possible, and follow with a toner and moisturiser. Ensuring that the products don’t contain astringents or oils. Moisturising hydrates the skin from the outside and helps protect the skin from environmental damage. 4. Exercise: helps increase lymphatic flow and circulation to the affected area, bringing

immune products to help fight possible infection and aid in healing. Foods can also aid in healing and reduces the formation of acne. Try including as much of the following in your diet. * Oysters * Lean red meat * Eggs, * Vegetables, try as many different colors as you can * Fruits, variety is the key * Whole grains, buckwheat, amaranth, brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats * Seeds, pumpkin etc * Legumes, chickpeas, black eyed peas, lentils etc * Spinach and salad greens.

SOME startling figures have surfaced about older Australians still living in their own homes well into their 70s and 80s and yours truly is one of those statistics. An analysis of the 2011 census data reveals that of homeowners aged 70 and over who live alone, 62 per cent have a house with three or more bedrooms. That adds up to a staggering 238,078 houses with at least three bedrooms occupied by just one person. Among houses owned by older couples where at least one partner is aged 70 or over, 82 per cent – or 332,752 houses – have at least three bedrooms. Treasury has projected that the share of the population aged over 65 will rise from 13 per cent to 23 per cent by the year 2050 (an increase from 3 million to more than 7 million) and they predict the number of “very old people” – people aged 85 or more – is expected to quadruple to 1.8 million. Since about 80 per cent of Australians aged 65 or over own their own homes, it means a great number are potentially “rattling around” in large houses. The government has just passed the final legislative elements of the Living Better, Living Longer package, which will see aged – care policy and funding focus even more on providing support to people in their homes, rather than in residential facilities. But this could have a downside, should it encourage older people to stay in houses that are much too big for them and that they can no longer keep in good condition. This will also slow down the development of the middle rings of

kclarke@alphalink.com.au Australian cities, where there is the ability to increase affordability by replacing ageing homes on large blocks with more diverse, medium density dwellings. But we should not insist that someone downsize just because there are more rooms in the house than occupants. Keep the spare bedrooms for guests, set up your home office or studio and have the bed there for when your partner’s snoring makes sleep impossible. And of course we need our big backyard for the pets, having a family barbecue in a covered entertaining area and for the children to play where we can keep our eye on them. It may be inappropriate for older people to continue living in large houses that are too expensive to heat and cool, keep clean and maintain, but we need to take into account how older people might use and enjoy their extra rooms for professional activities, studying, entertaining guests or hosting family gatherings, all of which make a major contribution to their wellbeing. This argument also has a moralistic undertone, a suggestion that older people are denying others, especially young families the chance to live in an ideal home. I have really only touched the surface of this topic, so will have a part two next week. Any questions or comments would be appreciated as this is a real area of concern for many older Australians.
