Orchard robots take harvesting to the next level SHEPPARTON-based Ripe Robotics is well on its way to commercialisation, with founders Hunter Jay and Leopold Vickers confident that 2022 will see the start-up with at least one working robot out in the orchards, mechanically harvesting a competitive quantity of fruit. Hunter’s background is in software and artificial intelligence. Leopold’s background is business and operations, and together they set themselves the challenge of defining a problem in their fields of expertise and solving it. “Fruit picking didn’t have a lot of automation or even mechanisation happening with it,” Hunter said.

BY EMMA OLIVER eoliver@ nemedia.com.au

“And so we decided to tackle automating harvesting, with a machine that could perform other tasks in the orchard as well. “A commercially viable robot has to not only be as useful and efficient as a human picker, it has to be better. “So our robot had to pick faster, cause less damage and reduce wastage, and it had to work for extended hours of operation, while collecting data about the orchard as it went along. “Data like fruit location, ripeness, size and weight,

with the machine able to draw on the knowledge of past harvests to determine how it would undertake the current pick. “The ultimate goal is not just to pick fruit but to build a multi-purpose horticultural robot that also provides preharvest, post-harvest and detailed analysis services.” Hunter and Leopold having determined the need for automation - and set the benchmark high - then looked to what already existed in the industry, with crops like olives and pistachios already partly automated by machines that shook the tree and caught the fruit. ■ Continued page 12

Natural Sequence Farming in North East Victoria By EMMA OLIVER IN a first for North East Victoria and Southern New South Wales, Stuart Andrews of Tarwyn Park Training will be conducting a four day workshop on Natural Sequence Farming late in September, at beef cattle property Bibbaringa in Bowna. Stuart is the son of founder Peter Andrews, who developed the principles that guide Natural Sequence Farming, a technique of regenerative agriculture and land care that focuses on implementing natural landscape function back into degraded landscapes. “The workshop will focus around understanding our ancient Australian landscape and the patterns and processes that existed, which allowed it to withstand through major extremes - whether those were wet periods or prolonged dry periods and everything in between,” said Stuart. “Many of our land uses have reversed natural processes and increased salinity, depleting the ability of the Australian environment to conserve water and resist drought. Natural Sequence Farming concentrates on the restoration of flow paths in the landscape, promoting the traditional movement of water through the system and enabling increased wa-

As the land’s water storage capacity increases and water becomes more readily available, biodiversity also naturally increases and so does productivity.

And through promoting the growth of repair plants and increasing the production of organic matter, the fertility of the system improves, allowing for the growth of

higher chain plants. “Our mantra at Tarwyn Park Training is slow the flow and let all plants grow, be careful where the animals go and filtration is a must know,” said Stuart. WORK IN PROGRESS: Building contours to keep water out of eroded gullies, Peter Andrews helped design the land planning at Bibbaringa in Bowna.

Farmers demand climate action By CLEMENCE CARAYOL TWENTY members of Farmers For Climate Action have signed an open letter sent to federal member for Nicholls Damian Drum’s office, demanding action regarding climate change. The letter demanded Mr Drum to stand up for farmers in Nicholls by supporting strong action on climate in regional Australia. “Farmers and regional communities stand to benefit from the transition to a low carbon future, and Nicholls is no exception,” it read. The letter also states that over the next 30 years an estimated $1 trillion will be spent on electricity systems, which opens up massive economic opportunities for regional areas. With support, farmers and their communities could supposedly also benefit from biodiversity stewardship, sequestering carbon in trees and soil, hosting renewables, and more. “Right now the EU is drafting legislation that will penalise Australia’s farmers over climate inaction,” the letter read. This is why the 20 farmers signed it to call on Mr Drum showing his support for the phasing out of coal-fired power plants in Australia, as well as a strong net-zero target and support for farmers in reducing their on-farm emissions. Shortly after the letter was presented to Mr Drum’s office, a new report from Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARES) was released showing farmers are adapting to climate change, but without action to reduce emissions, adaptation will become increasingly dif-

ficult and farm profits will suffer. It found Australian farms have lost, on average, nearly $30,000 each year in profits over the past 20 years due to climate change. One of the farmers who signed the open letter is James Winter-Irving, a sheep farmer from Nagambie. He signed the letter as for him, the need for action needs to be acknowledged by politicians. “Farming is one of the businesses that can make a big change with climate,” Mr Winter-Irving said. “Farmers’ contribution and practices can really make a difference regarding carbon emissions. “We have been conscious for the last 10 years of the climate issue and we need renewable energy big time in order to focus on a sustainable future. “What I ask from Mr Drum is to start acknowledging that farmers are an important tool for fixing the climate, and that we will need assistance to get these processes happening, mainly with education.” Mr Winter-Irving is a regenerative farmer, which means he focuses on practices that tend to reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity, resulting in both carbon drawdown and improving the water cycle. “As regenerative farmers, we know the connection between agriculture and climate and we are working to get landscape functioning better, through regenerative processes,” Mr WinterIrving said. “We are trying to create a soil sponge, and to also have 100 per cent ground cover

100 per cent of the time; this comes down to biology in soils. “We are standing on the solution.” Mr Winter-Irving said he was optimistic to raise awareness with the open letter. “We feel we are heading in the right direction and we want politicians to acknowledge what we aim for,” he said. “We need their support, we need to get that conversation happening, we want to raise awareness.” Farmers For Climate Action chief executive officer Fiona Davis grew up on a dairy farm in northern Victoria. She said the new report from ABARES showed that even if emissions peak by 2040, farm profits are projected to fall by up to 32 per cent. “More severe impacts could be experienced in central Queensland and parts of western NSW, where producers are already grappling with challenging conditions,” Ms Davis said. “Australian farmers are incredible at adapting, as this report notes, but there are ultimately limits to what they can adapt to. “The longer we delay action to reduce emissions the worse the effects of climate change on farms will be. “There’s no time to waste. “The Federal Government must fully commit to a net zero emissions target and a plan to get us there as soon as possible, or risk the future of Australia’s food and fibre industries.” Ms Davis said politicians needed to stand up for Australian farmers and against climate change. “Farm profits are paying the price of carbon emissions,” Ms Davis said. “Farmers are adapting but

we need political leaders to commit to a net zero emission target, that’s why we sent the open letter to Mr Drum because he has been speaking positively about the issue. “It’s important to see conservative politicians like him taking a stance on it, it is important for them to stand up for Australian farmers and develop a plan to get us to a zero emission target. “We want political representatives from all sides to stand on this issue.” Mr Drum, following the reception of the letter, said he always welcomed commu-

nication and feedback from residents in his electorate. “The Federal Government is delivering a ‘technology not taxes’ approach, set out in our Technology Investment Roadmap, to pursue emissions reductions that are achievable, responsible, and balanced, without imposing new costs on households, farmers or regional communities,” Mr Drum said. “Of particular importance to agriculture, the roadmap’s inaugural low emissions technology statement identifies soil carbon measurement as a priority technology to lower emissions, and livestock

feeds and supplements as an emerging technology. “The Federal Government is also continuing to support the agriculture sector to adapt and build resilience to a changing climate while increasing productivity and profitability through programs such as the $5 billion future drought fund, the $66 million agriculture stewardship package, and the $214 million soil package, which will support the implementation of the national soil strategy outlining how Australia will value, manage and improve its soil for the next 20 years.”

Silvan’s new Economax Linkage Sprayer offers boom and spot spraying versatility SILVAN Australia has launched a new addition to its extensive range of linkage sprayers with the release of the Economax - an affordable 800 or 1000 litre sprayer complete with a twelve metre boom and hose reel. The Economax unit includes a side mounted Eco hose reel fitted with a 20 metre length of 10 millimetre diameter hose and JetPro spray gun with an adjustable spray pattern. The Economax is therefore ideal for broad area boom spraying plus spot spraying requirements and has been especially designed to suit medium acreage farms, councils and land management agencies. The Polytuff impact resistant polyethylene tank has

moulded litre calibrations to show the tank level and is fitted with a non-spill screw down lid. It is carried in a fully galvanised steel frame with Category II linkage attachment points. The twelve metre manual fold galvanised steel boom has stainless steel spray lines, non-drip nozzle holders and has a spring loaded break back and forward design in case of obstructions. Low drift nozzles in bayonet fit non-drip nozzle bodies are set at 50 centimetre spacings. The boom also comes complete with a parallelogram suspension for a smooth ride and longer working life. The Silvan self-priming oil-backed diaphragm type

pump has nitrile diaphragms, a corrosion resistant cast aluminium body and a capacity of 121 litres a minute at 20 Bar pressure. The chemical is agitated through bypass action and the Economax unit also has a lid strainer, suction line strainer and nozzle strainers. The sprayer is controlled by a four outlet manual control valve with pressure regulator that is placed in a forward mounted position for easy access. Silvan spokesman Gavin Wheatcroft said that customer feedback indicated that there was a need for an economical linkage sprayer for covering larger areas and a range of features in one package. “When compared to other options on the market, the

Silvan Economax Linkage Sprayer is an exceptionally competitive package with a boom and hose reel combination offered as standard,” Mr Wheatcroft said. “The Economax linkage sprayer has four, rather than three, outlet controls providing for three section boom control plus the hose reel. “The Economax also has a galvanised frame and boom to prolong the working life of the sprayer, which is a feature of all Silvan linkage sprayers.” The Economax package is available at a starting price of $9350 for the 800 litre model. More information on the new Silvan Economax Linkage sprayer is available by calling 1300 SILVAN (1300 745 826) or by emailing info@silvan.com.au.

AgDay 2021 challenges Australians to choose an #AgVenture ON this year’s AgDay, Friday, November 19, the National Farmers’ Federation is challenging Australians to consider the career opportunities in agriculture and to embark on an #AgVenture. “There is a job for everyone in agriculture - whether it’s riding the boundary fences of a Top End cattle station

or breeding the next breakthrough wheat variety in an inner-city laboratory, Australians really can choose their own #AgVenture,” NFF chief executive officer Tony Mahar said. “The quintessential farm jobs that have in many ways defined agriculture are still there and new entrants are

desperately needed - jobs like shearers, roustabouts, station hands, header operators and stock truck drivers. “And, there are many other jobs, lots of which can be city- or country-based, that aren’t on-farm but which are vital in the farm supply chain. “Careers in fields as diverse

as finance, digital technology, science, marketing, trade and policy development. “No matter what your interest, where you live (or want to live) there are rewarding, fulfilling, and diverse jobs waiting for you in agriculture.” Now in its fourth year, this year’s AgDay will be different to previous years, with the

COVID-19 pandemic ongoing. However, many of the same features remain. “Australians planning to host an AgDay event can, as of today, register their event, big or small, at www.agday. org.au, and receive a special AgDay celebration pack,” Mr Mahar said. “This year, the NFF is par-

ticularly looking forward to working with schools, universities, vocational educators and large employers to help highlight the career opportunities on offer. “And, we’re calling on people already loving a career in agriculture, to share their story using the hashtags #AgVenture and #AgDayAU.”

No regrets when it comes to Limousins By EMMA OLIVER DENIS O’Connor of Mistletoe Limousins in Greta South has been championing the breed for close to 30 years now, after a fellow farmer spiked his interest in Limousins. “There was this gentleman raising calves and he had some limo cross calves that he was particularly taken with,” said Denis. “These are the best calves and the smartest ones I’ve got, he told me. “He said that he had fed them on the first day and showed them where to get out of the yard, and he just left them to it. “They came in, they fed and they went out again. “The other calves were a different story. “It took him two weeks of chasing them through the gate before they finally worked out what to do. “And I looked at those Limo cross calves and

“I really enjoy the breed, and it has so much to offer with the superior yield and quality of meat, the growth and exceptional muscle with some fat cover, along with the breed’s fertility and ease of calving, and then docility that is second to none.” Denis has always worked extensively on temperament, and as a result sub-

cow family, because unless you do this the bulls won’t improve. “So whenever I exhibit I always have dams, sisters and grand dams for viewing.” And such is the quality of the Mistletoe females, that Mistletoe Ro’s Secret recently took out first in her class at the Limousin National

Show and Sale, with Mistletoe Rosie taking out third in the same class for the stud. It means that Denis is excited about the upcoming Victorian Limousin Society On-Farm Challenge, after recent awards and the stud’s success at the previous challenge which was held in 2018. ■ Continued page 7

September 2021 From page 6 “We received quite a few commendations in 2018, and were awarded second in a class of 25, with the heifer that beat us taking out Supreme Exhibit, so I was happy with where we placed,” Denis said. Going into the current challenge which is scheduled for early October, Denis is quietly confident about some progeny from bull Jensuis that he will be exhibiting. “I’ve used French polled sires and carefully selected American and Australian sires to embed the polled gene in the herd, and using homozygous polled Jensuis has been beneficial on so

many levels,” he said. “He has really put some muscle back into the herd, and the overall conformation of his progeny is incredibly pleasing - quite broad and wide. “I’m looking forward to the challenge and having an outside expert cast a critical eye over the cattle, and assess the animals in the paddock on their structural soundness, conformation and their overall softness. “I do Beef Week every year, and would display bulls at the Elmore Field Days, and I really relish the feedback I get on the cattle and Mistletoe breeding principles. “We always got a really

good reception, and I would always sell a bull. “I was contacted by a gentleman who had purchased a Mistletoe bull, and he told me it was an absolute pleasure to have the bull on his property. “It gives you a good feeling when you hear things like that. “And when Angus breeders who’ve used a Limousin bull over their herd, come back and tell you that it’s the first time they’ve had all their calves over 400 kilograms at ten months that’s all the validation you need. “Once people start using Limos, they very rarely stop, “I believe it really is the breed that delivers.”

PROPOGATION for the Ovens Valley’s first native food forest is complete with the team ready to plant out their new site, but they cannot proceed without deer fencing. Chris Starchic, spokesperson for the recently formed Alpine Permaculture group, said member are eager to get the project in the ground, with hundreds of plants ready to plant. “We have been working on this for months, the site is ready and the plants are thriving but we can’t take the risk of them being decimated by feral deer,” he said. “Many of these plants, being Indigenous, have unusual growing habits and are impossible to propagate from cuttings. “They can be very difficult to acquire and grow successfully.

“You can’t just go into the bush and take a sample to start a new plant.” Mr Starchic met the two co-founding members of the group working on a farm at Ovens where they discovered their mutual desire to create a native food forest. Eventually working with the team at DUMU café in Bright, the group’s dream was realised with the owners offered the group land to build the forest on. “The owners of DUMU café have been incredible,” Mr Starchic said. “They have given us this land in Harrietville to build the food forest which will ultimately supply the café with locally grown Indigenous produce. “We intend for it to be a garden that the entire community can be involved in and enjoy.”

Mr Starchic’s background as the manager of the famous Lentil as Anything community garden in Melbourne provided the perfect foundation for this latest project which, he explains, will have many different systems of permaculture being implemented whilst maintaining an aesthetically pleasing park environment for the benefit of all once it is established. “The volunteers who have been working on this project would be heartbroken to see their efforts eaten by deer,” he said. The group is currently seeking funding to assist with the construction of deer fencing and encourages anybody interested in being involved in learning and sharing knowledge and skills to contact Mr Starchic through the Alpine Permaculture Facebook page.

“After ten years usage we thought our septic trench had failed… the system appeared totally blocked and overflowed at the inspection pit. We assumed the only solution was to dig a new trench. While contemplating the pros and cons of such a huge job we decided to try EcoCare Activator. Within three months our problems were completely solved. The trench is now draining freely and no more smells,” said Conrad from Queensland.

EcoCare Activator works by tackling the underlying problems that cause odours and blockages. Most wastewater supplements add bacteria and enzymes which provide a short-term fix; EcoCare Activator restores

GEORGIA SIEBEN from Torrumbarry would have been representing Victoria in the finals of dairy cattle parading at the 2021 Royal Queensland Show, if worsening COVID outbreaks and lockdowns hadn’t forced the cancellation of competition and the Ekka overall for the second year in a row. “I was pretty excited about the opportunity to go to Brisbane and compete,” Georgia said. “And this is the first year I’ve made it to the finals, though I’ve been competing for as long as I can remember. “I started at the local shows when I was really young - like six or seven and then at eight years old I competed at International Dairy Week. “You have to be eight to start parading, so as soon as I was old enough I was there and I’ve been a regular on the circuit ever since.” And Georgia has had some pretty proud moments over that time. Being named the supreme champion parader in the 2017 Royal Melbourne Show Dairy Youth Handlers Classic was one of those moments. And taking out junior

champion, senior champion and grand champion of the whole All Breeds National Youth Show at the International Dairy Week in 2020 was another. Georgia’s family have a 600 acre dairy farm just west of Echuca, where they milk a herd of 200 Holsteins and Jerseys, as well as breeding Holsteins under Brindabella Holsteins. It was the Siebens’ Holstein heifer, Brindabella Solomon R Midge, that took out senior champion in milk heifer class before going on to win grand champion outclassing a field of 200 entrants at the 2020 International Dairy Week, with Georgia in the lead. And under Georgia’s careful eye and experienced direction, Holstein heifer Brindabella Meridian Connie was named junior champion heifer. It was probably no surprise after such an impressive showing, that Georgia would then go on to personally take out the parading finals with a Jersey heifer, the cow chosen for its good tem-

perament in the ring. “I love leading my Holstein girls but they are so very strong, whereas Jerseys are a lot easier to handle,” Georgia said. Competitors have one hour to prepare their cattle, washing, clipping and grooming the animal for presentation at judging, with the competition designed to determine who most effectively presents and parades their animal. Keeping a level head and handling her heifers to show off their best features, Georgia also emphasises that remaining calm and relaxed is integral to the process. It is something that she is particularly competent at. And though Georgia does enjoy judging and always gives it a go, parading is her passion. That and animal nutrition, as Georgia is currently studying veterinary science at Latrobe in Bundoora, and she’s really enjoying it. “I’ve always wanted to go into agriculture, and for me herd health is where my interest lies,” Georgia said. “It’s about preventing problems with good nutrition, and providing the right nutrition to allow cows to go through their cycles.

“Every farmer has their problems, and getting a nutritionist in can avoid a negative situation. “Many years ago, we had a problem transitioning the cattle to milking after calving, resulting in some cows

succumbing to milk fever. “Caused by a temporary blood calcium deficiency it is one of the most common metabolic disorders in dairy cattle, but the experience really left its impact on me. “The nutritionist just

came in and fixed the problem, and it completely inspired me. “To be able to fix major problems in a herd by influencing diet or introducing dietary supplements is what I want to do.”

Industry ripe for robotics ■

EVE IN ACTION: The machine can determine how ripe the fruit is before it picks it, which is essential when harvesting apples. Eve can be programmed not to pick under ripe nor over-ripe fruit.

QUALITY CONTROL: With the system remote controlled, Eve can be programmed within specific parameters to do sweeps of the orchard picking only fruit of a particular quality. This will allow for different tiers of fruit to be picked separately reducing grading time before the fruit goes into storage.

From front page “There are some machines that are being designed to harvest strawberries, however, this is in its infancy and I’m not sure how successful or close to commercialisation this project is,” said Hunter. “We then looked to tree crops like apples and pears and assorted stonefruit, and realised there wasn’t anything there that was automated. “It was still people climbing up ladders, and it was hard work. “So far, our efforts to automate the industry have been most successful with apples, oranges and plums, and though we hope to expand in the future, at the moment we are concentrating on these crops.” Tests have been conducted around Shepparton, Griffith and Hawkesbury, with the team looking to the fruit growing district around Cobram as well as to Mildura. The second week of September will see the team start picking oranges, with future plans to deploy robots across key growing districts dependent on demand. “If there are a number of growers in one area who are keen to use the robots, we will set up a base there, assembling the robots at one place and transporting them out to the farms,” said Hunter. Eve is the team’s third prototype, after two years of research

HIGH IDEALS: (left to right) Hunter Jay and Leopold Vickers are co-founders of Ripe Robotics with a long term goal to automate the fruit picking industry to combat labour shortages. and development, and it is this robot that will become commercially available to farmers after extensive trial and error “Our first prototype didn’t work, the second was a significant improvement, and the third machine is almost there,” said Hunter. “We’ve had it out picking fruit, and now we just need to leave it out in the field for a whole season and scale up the amount of fruit the robot can pick, so that the process is worthwhile. “The goal is several bins of fruit every day, and we’re just a few upgrades away from this point.” When designing the machines, Hunter and Jay looked to what technology was available that could be adapted to the purpose. “We looked at automated welding arms initially, but these are a specialised, highly accurate piece of technology and this is not necessary for fruit. “We are using suction to re-

move the fruit from the tree, and so if the arm is off by a few millimetres it does not make a difference, and by giving up this precision we have reduced the cost of the machines quite significantly - which is important.” With a goal to automate the fruit picking industry and combat labour shortages, Ripe Robotics knew autonomy had to be more economically viable than paying wages, while also offering the incentive of requiring less direction and management than human pickers. “The working robots will earn a piece rate wage so that producers see the direct benefit in harvested fruit, and there will be a technician on hand to trouble shoot any issues that might arise,” said Hunter. “It’s really that simple. “And with robotic picking, we will end that uncertainty for producers as to whether they will get their crop harvested.” That confidence every season will be invaluable.

Lambs killed by local K9s Farmer believes domestic dogs attacked his livestock FACING south from the main ridgeline on Pinaroo Pastoral, Mountain Bay and Goughs Bay are visible to the right, and the state forest abutting Macs Cove is to the left. In the past, owner/ operator Paul Diamond has encountered wild dogs from the Macs Cove direction, but he’s never been attacked from the Goughs Bay side, until a couple of weeks ago, when he arrived to a paddock spattered with blood and

dappled with dead and injured lambs. After the shock wore off, Paul’ eyebrows raised. In Paul’s experience, wild dogs hadn’t ventured far from cover into open plains without the security of bushland nearby to retreat if necessary. But dealing with wild dogs is part of the

40 ATTACKED: Paul Diamond now patrols his paddocks throughout the night to protect his stock. farming game, which Paul acknowledges. “As farmers we have to adapt and deal with the repercussions of being in an area where there are wild dogs and alpine dingoes,” said Paul. But Paul suspects this attack, in which 20 lambs were killed and another 20 seriously injured, wasn’t by wild, but domestic dogs. “There were no tracks along Mountain Bay drive, so we’re thinking they’ve come across the paddocks

at Mountain Bay pastoral,” he said. “That direction is Mountain Bay and Goughs Bay, so a wild dog would have to be very keen to come into open plain country and not utilise the bush as protection. “I had 40 lambs attacked over that weekend, 12 were killed and then over the next three days another eight succumbed to their injuries. “But the other 20 who were attacked are still alive.

“Because of the bacteria in a wild dog’s saliva, if a lamb had a chunk taken out of it but survived, it’d die within 72 hours once the infection spread throughout its body. “No matter the penicillin and pain relief I gave - which I did every time they died. “These lambs (from the recent attack) had pierce marks through their skin, so you would’ve thought those 20 would be dead to infection by now if it’d been

a wild dog, as domestic dogs generally have a cleaner diet.” Additionally, Paul said the modus operandi of wild dogs is to return and pick off more stock, until they’re either deterred or eradicated, but there have been no subsequent attacks. David Klippel, wild dog expert from DELWP, told the Courier when discussing the Less Predators More Lambs project, that all dogs have a pattern.

September 2021 “Domestic canines demonstrate a few noticeable differences to their wild cousins,” said David. “Domestic dogs usually return home after a kill, as wild dogs shun built up areas.” Paul added that the owners would have surely known if their dogs had been the ones who attacked, as they would’ve been covered in blood. “You can’t blame the dog,” said Paul. “They’re just going out and having fun, they don’t know what they’re doing. “For all a domestic dog knows, they’re in a park playing but these other ‘dogs’ aren’t playing back. “So they grab it and play with it, and suddenly it tastes nice.” Pinaroo is a family property. Paul moved up to the area eight years ago and took over the operation in partnership with his uncle Phil and grandfather Gordon. He took over operational management a couple of years ago and diversified their livestock to include sheep, which has been enjoyable aside from uncontrollable management issues. But the bottom line isn’t Paul’s main concern. “As a farmer, obviously we rely on livestock for an income,” he said. “Like anyone, we’ve got families, bills, mortgages,

As farmers we have to adapt and deal with the repercussions of being in an area where there are wild dogs and alpine dingoes. - PAUL DIAMOND so we rely on performing. “But at the end of the day I did not think for one second that I’ve lost money. “I thought those sheep have gone through a traumatic event, and that is what’s upset me the most. “Twenty lambs - call it $5000 - some were killed that were potential breeders that would’ve given me 10 lambs, so you can’t really put a value on the loss. “I don’t breed animals to harm them. “Yes they end up as a product that some people don’t agree with, and that’s fine, but I’m an animal lover. “I studied a Bachelor Degree of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences and I wanted to be a vet or go into conservation and protect animals. “I fell into farming because I wanted to work outside and have every day be a little bit different,

and luckily my family has a property that I have the opportunity to run. “But I’ve brought that mentality of animal ethics being number one, because if I look after them, they look after me.” Paul said he would like to think that the everyday locals who live in Goughs Bay and Mountain Bay townships understand, but those who mightn’t be in the area all the time need to understand that it’s not fair and frustrating to think of the high probability this incident was domestic dogs. “Come up to Mansfield; we want you up here, because it’s great for our local economy,” Paul said. “But you’ve got to understand your dogs have come from a backyard in Melbourne, and when you let them out here, they have the potential to impact a farmer’s livelihood and his mental health.” Compounding his problems since the attacks, Paul’s now had to patrol his property throughout the night. Whatever the truth of the recent attack, when it comes to domestic dogs, Paul’s message is simple. “Just lock them up,” he said. “I’ll be happy, you’ll be happy. “I’d rather try the avenues of education and awareness. “Because I don’t want to shoot someone’s dog, but I will if I have to.”

Long term belief in Limousins

Other sizes available

Wangaratta (03) 5721 4138

OVER 38 years ago John and Beverley McIntyre made the decision to breed Limousin cattle making Wangaratta’s Chateau Limousins one of the oldest Limousin studs in the country. John and Beverley - now with their son Andrew and his wife Jenna McIntyre have seen some pretty exciting times in the beef industry. Having worked with other breeds on their introduction to Australia, John and Bev settled on Limousins as they felt they suited the market place best. “We chose Limousins as we felt that they had a lot to offer the cattle industry with calving case, early maturity and high yielding carcasses,” said Beverley. “Another feature we have found is the longevity of Limousin cattle. “For the small farmer purchasing a bull is a costly decision and knowing that you can get between six to eight years’ service from a bull makes a Limousin bull an economical buy.” The McIntyres traditionally bred the French Pure type being apricot in colour and horned, but with changes to husbandry practices and market acceptance have

PREMIUM GENETICS: A double polled French Pure sire Limousin, Chateau Queenscliff JWMFQ22, weighing in at 958 kilograms, brought in a top price of $14,000 at the on-farm sale for Chateau Limousins in March. moved towards polled genetics as well as breeding a select number of black bulls each year. “We are breeding polled and black Limousins together along with our traditional French Pures,” said Beverley. “Throughout the year we have had some great results from not only our own cattle, but from our clients who have excelled in the saleyards with traditional vealers. “We’ve also received some excellent feedback on the MSA grids - both as heavy domestic and export bodies - showing how truly versatile the progeny from our bulls can be.

“And with six months to our annual bull sale we are now evaluating the bulls we will take onto our sale, offering our usual mix of apricot, black and polled bulls. “We are particularly excited about the on-farm challenge being held in October by the Victorian Limousin Breeders’ Society, which will allow our animals to be judged in their natural environment. “And we will also be participating in Beef Week in January for all those considering adding some Chateau Limousin genetics to their herd.”

Resilience during disaster Farmer to speak at Cancer Council Men’s Breakfast on September 3 BY STEVE KELLY skelly@ nemedia.com.au

friends just asking how they’re doing, and strangers like BlazeAid volunteers who did a lot of the work to get the farm functional again. “I have always been conscious of resilience and it was interesting that prior to the fire on the farm they talked about sustainability with farming but we used the term resilience,” he said. “When the fire happened I remember saying to the family that we’ll see how good this resilience goes with the farm and hopefully we’re as good at bouncing back as what I think the farm will be.” Doug is full of praise for BlazeAid, a bunch of grey nomads who travel around Australia helping those most in need in times of tragedy. “It was worth going through it to meet these amazing people who were with BlazeAid - the people we met were on a mission and they gave us our life back,” Doug reflected. “I said back then that anyone who offers help, we’ll take it because the only way we’ll get out of this is to get help

from whoever and however.” At the time and after a hard week of work the James family used to go to the local hall and have a meal with the BlazeAid crew and Doug said the camaraderie and shenanigans that used to go on were worth their weight in gold, for personal health reasons alone. “It was the first time in my life that anyone asked me how I’m feeling and it was a pleasant surprise really,” Doug said with a chuckle. Rain the following year at the right time allowed the James’ farm to recover and they bought in some more ewes to re-establish the flock, and the rest is history. “I’d like to think my message is that nobody has to do it on their own, regardless of what it is, there will always be people who are willing to help you.” The Men’s Breakfast will be held at Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway on Friday, September 3 from 7.30am to 9.30am. Tickets cost $30 and are available from Flynn’s of Wangaratta at 63 Murphy Street RSVP by August 27. You can also purchase tickets electronically with payment to EFT: BSB:013-870 A/C 3474-34959. DOUG James, a Bungeet sheep farmer whose family survived the 2014 grass and bushfire that ripped through his property, will be a guest speaker at an upcoming Cancer Council Victoria Men’s Breakfast in Wangaratta. It was a warm and windy day just before Christmas that year when the James’ got the shock of their lives after hearing about a grass fire at Thoona. Wind gusts up to 60kph fanned the fire towards their home and within the hour it was upon them. Doug and his family fought through the night alone to protect property assets and they survived, however, the impact was devastating. “The shock and trauma was there, one minute you’re sitting there thinking it’s just another day and two hours later your whole farm is burnt out,” Doug said. “You see what you’ve devoted your whole life to actually go up in smoke.” The following day sheep had to be euthanised and the job of rebuilding farm infrastructure such as fencing on their own was an insurmountable thought. Doug’s message at the breakfast will be “resilience” and how he and his family made it back from the disaster with the help of others such as

Funding for water security in North East Victoria TWO local projects in the electorate of Indi are among 40 water infrastructure projects nationwide which will share in $108 million in federal funding under the National Water Grid Connections funding pathway. Nationals Senate leader and Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said the federal government was pleased to support the Sunday Creek Irrigation and Reconfiguration Project and critical headworks infrastructure for the Modernised Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District. Both projects will improve the resilience and reliability of North East Victoria’s water infrastructure, ensuring a stronger future for water security across the region. “As part of the Sunday Creek Irrigation and Reconfiguration Project, the Sunday Creek Irrigation Scheme will be reconfigured by constructing a new pipeline to directly supply water from the Murray River through Sunday Creek,” Senator McKenzie said. “This will address 1407 megalitres of water losses per annum. “Critical components of headworks infrastructure will also be upgraded to support improvements to the delivery of high reliability water to irrigators in northern Victoria. “These two local projects are among nine in Victoria. “They will collectively deliver water savings and help support

WATER SECURITY: Water infrastructure projects nationwide are expected to support over 7000 hectares of irrigable land, with the electorate of Indi set to benefit. the agricultural industry during drought conditions. “These benefits will contribute to delivering secure, affordable and reliable water for rural and regional Victoria. “The projects in Victoria are also expected to deliver up to 100 jobs during construction and more than 125 ongoing jobs, which is great news for the local economy.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said through this funding pathway, the Federal Government is investing in packages of water infrastructure projects

brought forward by states and territories right across the country to improve water reliability and efficiency. “The National Water Grid Connections is all about driving the construction of smaller-scale projects over the next two years to provide short term economic stimulus,” Mr Joyce said. “The cumulative impact for the National Water Grid will be significant. “Collectively, these projects are expected to support over 7000 hectares of irrigable land and connect 400 new customers. “An additional 13,000 customers

are expected to benefit from improved water access or reliability. “Up to 1175 jobs will be supported during construction, with over 2550 ongoing and up to 500 more seasonal jobs set to be created nationally. “The $3.5 billion National Water Grid Fund is paving the way to national water security, while promoting local economic activity and job creation along the way.” Up to $20 million was made available for each state and territory to deliver projects over the next two years, with a federal government contribution of up to $5 million per project.

Farmer banned 10 years from owning livestock and fined $60,000 AFTER lodging an appeal in the Melbourne County Court against his 2020 sentence for animal cruelty, Cooma dairy farmer, John Hall, was recently re-sentenced and fined $60,000. Mr Hall’s original 10-year disqualification order from being the owner or person in charge of any farm animal was also reinstated. Mr Hall pleaded guilty to charges of failing to provide proper and sufficient feed to his herd of 155 cattle, failing to comply with a notice issued by an authorised officer and five separate charges of aggravated cruelty to eight cows. Agriculture Victoria animal health and welfare compliance manager Daniel Bode said the dairy farmer was previously convicted for similar offending in 2017. “In this case Mr Hall had again failed to comply with a notice under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 and failed to provide adequate care to his stock,” Mr Bode said. He said apart from the obvious pain and suffering of the animals, animal welfare breaches may affect all producers by jeopardising Victorian farmers’ reputations as responsible food producers who work to ensure their animals are well cared-for and treated humanely. “This is a reminder to all livestock producers that animal cruelty will not be tolerated by the Victorian Government or the community,” Mr Bode said.

Urgent action required to safeguard Victorian horticulture industry AUSVEG VIC, Victoria’s peak industry body for vegetable and potato growers, is calling for the urgent extension of the quarantining arrangement between Victoria and Tasmania to allow workers from the Pacific Islands to perform essential work on Victorian farms. The quarantining pathway arrangement, which was announced in January 2021 and capped at 1500 workers, has been filled and growers now require an extension of these arrangements to bring in workers for the upcoming harvest period.

According to AUSVEG VIC president and Victorian vegetable grower Paul Gazzola, the Seasonal Worker Program and the Pacific Labour Scheme have proven vital for Victorian producers to fill the growing void in the state’s workforce and extending the quarantine pathway arrangement is a high priority for industry. “Victoria’s vegetable growers have planned ahead and lodged their workforce needs early to ensure they have a workforce for their harvest period, but that process has now

been delayed as we await sign off from the Victorian Government,” said Mr Gazzola. “The delay of quarantine arrangements is now creating a backlog of flights, which will continue to put more pressure on the system the longer it drags on. “This is deeply concerning for AUSVEG VIC and its members as we get closer to our peak demand, which really starts to ramp up in October. “Industry needs this quarantine program to be approved immediately.”

Tillage radish provides solution to tough soil TILLAGE radish has given farmer James Bufton a low-impact solution to what looked like an impenetrable soil problem. James, from Staughton Vale at Balliang centrally located between Geelong, Ballarat and Melbourne, has to deal with a sodic barrier under some of his land. In a wet year, the sodicity leaches out and the roots are able to push through, but when it’s drier the sodic barrier creates a saline layer of soil that’s virtually impenetrable. “It more-or-less turns into a layer of concrete,” James said. “The barley or canola we’re trying to grow is unable to penetrate through for both moisture and nutrient.” Staughton Vale is primarily a malt barley growing operation, but also grows canola, linseed, peas, oaten hay for dairy operators and ryegrass and lucerne hay for horse owners. It also has its own first-cross ewe and prime lamb operation. This season James used tillage radish for the first time as a low-impact way of dealing with the sodic barrier and he and his sheep couldn’t be happier.

“There are various ways that people try to attack it,” he said. “Some use fairly big hammers in terms of deep ripping or injection of manure, which work but use a lot of horsepower and diesel and product. “We’re trying to use a smaller hammer and let a plant and nature help us.” Staughton Vale has a high production system but is mindful of looking after the soils and using sustainable farming practices. The use of tillage radish followed consultation with AGF Seeds who suggested it as a solution to the hard soil problem. James said he was aware that tillage radish could work but he didn’t previously have the conditions or the equipment to use it. “We bought a Seahawk air seeder and because it was a cool summer we thought if it was going to work any year, this would be it,” he said. A trial 100 hectares was planted and James was “surprised and delighted” with the results. ■ Continued page 21

North East and Goulburn Murray Farmer - Page 21 IMPROVING THE SOIL: Tillage radish is a brassica bred specifically for its large tuber taproot, which is used to reduce soil issues such as compaction. An additional benefit is that the raddish is a drought hardy, lower risk option due to the energy reserves available in the tuber, and its ability to access subsoil moisture and nutrients. had been there for 23 years. He said the advice and information from AGF Seeds was always helpful. “I’ll ring and say I want to try this or that and they tell me if it’s a good idea or not and they recommend things, like the tillage radish,” he said. On advice from AGF Seeds, the tillage radish paddock has now been planted with long-term ryegrass, rape and a chicory mix. “That will probably give us three years’ worth of feed,” James said.

DUAL PURPOSE: James Bufton has also used tillage radish as a short term fodder option, as the plant is a very palatable feed, appropriate for sheep as well as cattle.

From page 20 A total of 90Ha was used as a green manure crop which will hopefully reap benefits from the roots in the soil. The other 10Ha was intensively grazed after being saved for finishing off trade lambs. The mob was made up of Staughton Vale’s tail-end lambs from the 2020 season and some trade lambs purchased from Tasmania. The crop ended up being barley that came up post-harvest and tillage radish and the mob was also fed hay and straw. There were 627 in the mob and they hooked out at 30.6 kilograms average, well above expectations. “The trade lambs were a Southdown-Merino cross and I was concerned they weren’t going to yield but the tillage radish and barley really put the yield into them,” James said. It was a 10-hectare paddock, fenced into about 2.5 hectares at a time. “The 627 happily chewed two and a half hectares down over a week; the 10 hectares

lasted us a month and we were very happy with that,” James said. “They were heavier than we expected and the yield conversion was very good. “The tillage radish had a fair bit to do with that end result and we will definitely use it again. “The sheep took the radish right down to ground level, leaf, stalk and bulb. “It’s like a billiard table now - they loved every bit of it.” While the weight gain and conversion bring immediate benefits, James also has his eye on long-term benefits. “We’ve seen it converted into kilograms of lamb already, but the thing we haven’t seen as yet is the soil conditioning which we expect to be part two of the success,” he said. “It’s opening the soil up and depositing humus when it breaks itself down, and it opens tunnels for moisture to flow into and worms to get busy in.” James is a fifth-generation farmer. He has been on his current farm for six years after buying it from his parents who

In memory of Jane Boadle By KRISTEN DAVEY and RICHARD BOADLE BALMATTUM Australian White Sheep Stud is a family business, owned by Grant and Kristen Davey and managed by Kristen’s father Richard Boadle. In July of this year, the family lost their beautiful Jane - the loving daughter of Richard and Lish Boadle, adored sister and sister-in-law to Kristen and Grant and much loved and adored aunty to William and Sissy. Jane was killed tragically in a single car accident on the Mornington Peninsula where she lived. Jane was 42 years old. Jane was a shining light, driven and determined. Jane had many interests and pas-

sions and a deep love for people and animals. Jane was an osteopath and ran a very busy and successful practice from her home in Rosebud. Jane was the osteopath for Equine Pathways Australia - a para-equestrian participation and competition pathway for riders of all abilities. The centre was founded by Julia Battams, who saw a need for a structured program for people with a disability or recovering from illness or injury to engage with or return to involvement in equine sport. Equine Pathways Australia Ltd is an accredited Paralympics Australian Centre for Paralympic Preparation. Another love of Jane’s was her beauti-

ful Kelpie dog, Gracie (her yellow dog). Jane quickly recognised Gracie’s intelligence and her instinct to work with sheep. Together they spent many weekends at Beloka Kelpies in Welshpool, Victoria training and educating Gracie to work with sheep. Gracie now has a new home at Balmattum Australian White Sheep Stud, where she is working the sheep with great exuberance and skill. CLOSE COMPANION: Jane Boadle trained her kelpie Gracie to work sheep, with Gracie finding her new home at Balmattum Australian White Sheep Stud after the tragic passing of Jane.

AGRICULTURAL Shows Australia has confirmed that the 2021 National Championships for Young Judges and Rural Ambassadors will be hosted at the 2022 Sydney Royal Easter Show. The competitions, which see 70 people under the age of 25 selected to represent their state and compete in one of ten competitions from poultry judging to dairy cattle parading, were scheduled to be held at this year’s Royal Queensland Show, The Ekka, which was cancelled days prior to the opening due to COVID-19 restrictions in South East Queensland. Agricultural Shows Australia executive officer Katie Stanley said that several options were considered prior to the decision to postpone the national finals. “Our priority is our duty of care to competitors, sponsors and volunteers and with the support of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS of NSW), Queensland National Competitions Organising Committee and the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW; the decision was unanimous that Sydney Royal should host the national finals next year,” Ms Stanley said. This decision now means that both the 2021 and 2022 national championships will be held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show from April 8-19, 2022. “Agricultural Shows Australia, RAS of NSW, ASC of NSW and Queensland Ag Shows will endeavour to make sure all competitors gain the most out of the experience of competing in a national championship,” Ms Stanley said. More details on this will be circulated as the event approaches. “Rescheduling the event will allow recognition of the skills and expertise that these young judges and rural ambassadors possess along with countless opportunities in terms of development and networking,” Ms Stanley said. “The decision to reschedule reflects the commitment of Agricultural Shows Australia to ensuring the longevity of agricultural shows, education and involving the next generation of enthusiasts.” The ten competitions are: z National Rural Ambassador finals; z Beef Cattle Judging; z Dairy Cattle Judging; z Merino Sheep Judging | Sponsored by Australian Wool Innovation; z Meat Sheep Breeds Judging; z Merino Fleece Judging | Sponsored by Australian Wool Innovation; z Beef Cattle Parading; z Dairy Cattle Parading; z Poultry Judging | Sponsored by Australian Eggs; z Alpaca (Animal and Fleece).

CLICK GO THE SHEARS: Going into spring shearing, WoolProducers Australia is working with the National Farmers’ Federation and the Shearing Contractors’ Association of Australia to protect Australia’s shearing workforce.

It’s all about the shape THE Kismet spring ram sale will be held on property at Kismet, Howlong at 1pm on Wednesday, October 6. It will again be interfaced with Auctions Plus. The offering will include 100 White Suffolk rams, 70 Southdown White Suffolk cross and 30 Poll Dorsets. The rams are scanned with Stockscan with the figures available on their website www.kismetstud.com.au. All rams are Gudair and Glanvac vaccinated, backlined with Avenge and Brucellosis accredited. At Kismet great emphasis is placed on the shape of the sheep which means everything at lambing time. Because if the sire has smooth shoulders with a reasonable neck extension and

0+% 7BDDJ OBUF #36$&--0 E 4*4 "$$3&%*5 &%

a reasonably small head, the ewe can lamb easily therefore more likely to have a live lamb which doesn’t necessarily have to be a low birth weight. At Kismet they rarely ever have to assist with a lambing ewe. They find the sheep are very fertile with lots of multiples and there is generally around 160-170 per cent live lambs with no artificial interference. In recent years Kismet has introduced the Southdown White Suffolk cross rams which are proving very popular particularly over maiden ewes. They find the rams maintain the Southdown qualities of very good muscling and short dense wool. They lamb well and the progeny are well sought after at the market.

The White Suffolk infusion tends to clean up the head and legs and add a little height and length. The progeny have that short dense wool which means the lambs don’t go to wool which can be a great plus in the market. The White Suffolk are still their most popular breed selling good numbers throughout the year, and they also keep the best rams for the spring ram sale each year. Kismet will have individual videos of all their sale rams on Auctions Plus around the third week of September. Bid online at Auctions Plus or come to the on property sale with inspections starting at 11am, and the sale kicks off at 1pm depending on COVID restrictions.

PEAK woolgrower representative body, WoolProducers Australia, is working with the National Farmers’ Federation and the Shearing Contractors’ Association of Australia to protect Australia’s shearing workforce. “In this unprecedented environment, growers and the shearing workforce are committed to doing what’s necessary to keep our workplaces safe and to ensure wool harvesting can continue,” WoolProducers chief executive officer Jo Hall said. Ms Hall said all members of the shearing team including growers, shearers, shed hands and visitors to sheds, had a role to play to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “While there have been no major incidents to date, there is no such thing as zero risk. “But we know that if everybody does their bit, follows the now well-established COVID-19 safe guidelines, and encourages vaccinations, then we are giving the industry the best chance at remaining COVID-19 free.” WoolProducers’ Shearing Operations: Protocols in response to COVID-19 guide for growers and contractors on best practice COVID-19 measures for shearing sheds advises adhering to1.5 metre spacing inside the shearing shed; getting a COVID test and isolating when experiencing symptoms; getting vaccinated; and implementing QR codes or written records, ensuring staff check in. “It is in everyone’s best interests to continue to play their part,” SCAA secretary Jason Letchford said.

Confidence strong as Balmattum rams set to go under Auctions Plus hammer WITH New South Wales in lockdown for major Australian White Sheep sales it has been necessary for farmers to purchase on-line, through Auctions Plus. The experience of on-line sales can never be the same as a close-up inspection when you’re wanting to buy a top ram - but for now there is no choice. CERTIFIED GENETICS: With records being broken by Australian White Sheep across the country, the Balmattum Australian White Sheep Stud sale is an eagerly anticipated event with rams like these six month old ones pictured going under the hammer. And with an Australian White Ram, what should you look for? It is a personal choice for what trait you give preference to and the price is determined by how deep your pockets are. The heritability (ability to pass on the genetics to the next generation) of each

trait is important. It can be a bit like snakes and ladders - make the right choice you go up, make a bad one and you go down. Most sheep farmers will hold a ram for around four years, joining with approximately 200 ewes over that time. With a lambing percent-

age of 125 per cent this equates to 250 lambs. With the cost of a good quality Australian White Ram at around $5000, the cost per lamb works out to be $20 per head over the lifetime of that ram. Quite an insignificant cost, but with so many benefits.

Top of the drop Southdown rams at Fincham’s FINCHAM’S Burando Southdowns’ breeding program is very commercially orientated. They focus on balanced, strong constitution, unassisted, live easy-born lambs on the ground, with a high percentage of twinning. They produce fast growing, heavy carcasses and solid hindquarters, using balanced figures as a guide. Fincham’s invite all interested parties to their second annual sale of ‘top of the drop’ Southdown rams. The ram sale will be held on Monday, November 8 from 1pm at the Yea showgrounds. This year’s sale rams are an outstanding group; with sons of Southdown breed trait leaders in the top five per cent for growth, eye muscle area, fat and also top 5 per cent for marbling - essential for eating quality. “We want our Southdowns when crossed with any type of maternal ewe to grow quickly, finishing at four to five months with tight Down type skins,” Tim said. “This will enable our clients to reap the rewards of trade lambs between 22-26 kilogram carcass weights or have the ability to go out to export lambs at the 27-30 kilogram carcass weight. “The modern Southdown has the ability to do this and more, as so many ram breed-

SOUTHDOWNS: Fincham’s Burando Southdowns breed the best possible Southdown rams for their prime lamb clients. ers are selling half bred Southdown rams to put the real meat sheep back into their programs. “The Southdown has the unique factor of tender juicy meat with a naturally finer intramuscular fat (marbling) required for the best eating lamb. “We have a core ewe flock of 300 mature Southdown ewes. “Again this year we have lambed down, tagged and marked 178 per cent of live lambs.” During the 1970s, we selected and imported ewes from the Punchbowl Dispersal (New Zealand). “These sheep had very high lambing percentages, which most of our flock go back to now.

“Over the years we have bought the best rams from leading Australian and New Zealand studs and have spared no expense to get the right rams for our breeding program. “Our aim is to breed the best possible Southdown rams for our Prime Lamb clients. “We are a closed flock; Ovine Brucellosis Accredited free and have been continuously accredited free of Brucellosis since 1975. “We are an OJD third generation approved, fully (V) vaccinated flock since 2004. “All of our flock are footrot and lice free.” For any upcoming ram sale enquiries phone Tim on 0427 871 294 or find them on Facebook at Fincham’s Burando Southdowns.

Record-breaking bull arrives at new home AUSTRALIA’S recordbreaking Angus bull, Texas Iceman, has arrived at his new home in Camperdown, Victoria as he starts producing semen for national and world markets. Texas Iceman R725(AI)(ET) sold to Macka’s Australian Black Angus on July 29 for a record-breaking $225,000 at the Texas Angus bull sale near Warialda in northern New South Wales, easily eclipsing the previous top of $160,000 paid for an Angus bull. Macka’s Angus is working with Genetics Australia (GA) to market Texas Iceman who has been relocated to GA’s TLG collection centre at Camperdown. GA beef manager Nigel Semmens predicts huge demand for product from the bull, with semen expected to

Mr Mackenzie said he would have bid even more than $225,000. “We would have gone well and truly above that price because he was a bull that fitted our operation and our future,” he said. “For us, he was a cheap investment into our operation and a great investment for all of Australia to be able to share the genetics.” “With anticipated high demand, customers are encouraged to contact GA to register their interest in his semen for the spring breeding season,” Mr Semmens added. Moving into 2022, Iceman will have a heavy workload to meet domestic demand and to produce export semen and he will be a sire that will have male and female sexed semen available.

be available in late September. “There’s already high demand for his semen and that will only increase after the sale,” Nigel said. “We will start collecting semen straight away for Genetics Australia to sell and for the large-scale AI programs in Macka’s Angus beef program.” Macka’s Angus managing director Robert Mackenzie expects strong demand for Iceman’s semen. “We’re proud we’ve been able to secure such a unique bull for our operation and to be widely used here in Australia and around the world. “We’re all about strengthening the genetics of Angus cattle around Australia and it’s great that we can help people get some great genetics.”

MONEY MAN: Texas Iceman was sold for a record-breaking $225,000, demonstrating that national and international demand for quality Angus genetics shows no sign of abating.

The crucial role of cattle in the carbon cycle THE first of a series of themed animations being produced to debunk myths about the environmental impact of red meat production in Australia has been launched by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). The animation explains how methane from cattle is part of the natural carbon cycle, demonstrating how the environmental impacts of emissions of methane from cows and carbon dioxide from

fossil fuels, are fundamentally different. The two-minute video is the first in a series of five animations being launched by MLA this year, addressing important topics such as nutrition, sustainability and traceability in order to address a growing thirst for knowledge from the community about food provenance. “Comparing different greenhouse gasses is a very complex topic, but it’s vitally

important for people to understand the systems that we live within, the impacts, and most importantly, what we’re doing about it,” MLA managing director Jason Strong said. “We’ve created these animations to reduce some of the confusion through content that is easy to understand, which we hope will enable people to make informed decisions about what they eat and why. “The red meat industry

must continue to be on the front foot in sharing the good story about our farming systems, the nutritional benefits of red meat, our animal wellbeing and environmental stewardship credentials, and our drive for intergenerational sustainability and productivity improvement in a competitive global marketplace. “While the community want something done on climate change, they also want to

continue to enjoy red meat as part of a healthy diet and it’s our job to provide the evidence that says it’s absolutely ok to keep doing that.” Mr Strong said the red meat industry was doing more than most to be part of the climate solution. “In 2017, the red meat and livestock industry set the ambitious target to be Carbon Neutral by 2030 (CN30) which provides a framework to guide investment in technologies

and research that will foster productivity and grow profitability throughout the red meat supply chain,” Mr Strong said. “Agriculture has already done much of the heavy lifting on limiting carbon pollution with net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from red meat production less than half what they were in 2005, representing by far the greatest reduction by any sector of Australia’s economy.”

CARE OF THE MARE DURING LATE PREGNANCY TUESDAY "KING VALLEY RUN"

32 WARBY STREET, WANGARATTA

Foaling season has started! Here are a few tips for care of mares during late pregnancy. It is imperative that the pregnant mare is well fed. The nutritional requirements of the mare will increase by 20-30% during the last three months of pregnancy. As the mare approaches the end of her pregnancy she should be in good body condition, but not too fat - the overweight mare may have trouble foaling and may lose condition after foaling, which may delay her coming into season after foaling. Abortion in late pregnancy is also a concern. There are a wide range of causes of abortion in the mare, but in general, older mares tend to have a higher incidence of abortion. Various bacteria can cause an endometritis leading to abortion. Apart from bacterial endometritis, other causes of abortion

include viral or fungal infection, and twins. The most common viral agent causing abortion in mares is equine herpes virus I, which generally causes abortion in the last trimester of pregnancy. Some mares will show signs of abortion before it occurs, such as dripping milk prematurely or having a vulval discharge. Other mares may abort without any warning. If your mare does show any abnormal signs during her pregnancy, you should consult your veterinarian. As the foaling date approaches, it is important to check if a Caslick’s operation has been performed on your mare. The Caslick’s operation involves suturing the top of the mare’s vulval lips together to minimise the risk of uterine infection. If the operation has been performed, the vulva will need to be

cut open prior to foaling. Another consideration is the mare’s vaccination history. It is advisable to have the mare vaccinated for tetanus and strangles about a month prior to foaling. If you intend to send your mare to stud this is particularly important. Most studs insist on prevaccination with tetanus & strangles; others will also insist on equine herpes virus 1 and 4 vaccination. It is also recommended to worm the mare with an allwormer four weeks before and four weeks after foaling. If all this is followed the pregnancy should proceed without complication. If in doubt, at any stage during the mare’s pregnancy it is advisable to contact your veterinarian. - Andrew Bett BVSc
