A MOTORBIKE ride “up the guts” of Australia has helped a Beechworth man honor the memory of his father. Jason Dawson took part in the charity bike ride, from Albury to Adelaide, then on to Darwin and back, to raise money for cancer research. He and his fellow riders from the Border undertook what they called the “76ers Up The Guts Tour”. A fundraiser for the Cancer Council, the journey had a personal element for Mr Dawson, who lost his 52 year old father to cancer. “He was the driving force behind my venture,” Mr Dawson said. “My dad taught me to make the most out of life and take opportunities as they arise, you never know what’s around the corner.” He added that most members of the group had had some experience with friends or family affected by cancer. “It’s a disease that affects everyone, in some way, shape or form,” Mr Dawson said. And he said the trip opened up his eyes to the vastness and majesty of the Australian outback, as well as the generosity and kindness of others. He has many happy memories of the trip, from tiny towns where indigenous children were fascinated by the group’s motorcycles, to sleeping under the stars in the desert. continued page |

Grow your own tea garden
Pruning fruit trees
LAST spring I planted my own herbal tea garden. For a few months I enjoyed a homegrown herbal cuppa each morning – delicious. I don’t have a big backyard so I grew my tea garden in pots. I had all my favorites: peppermint, nettle, lemon balm, lemon verbena, chamomile and calendula, available at the back door. Simply pick and crush four leaves, pop them in to your cup and cover in hot water. The medicinal action is also much more obvious when you drink the fresh tea, compared to the teabag variety. If you have only sipped on a teabag of peppermint I encourage you to have a pot made from loose-leaf organic tea leaves – you won’t believe the difference. PRUNING deciduous fruit trees is an annual ritual gardeners practice every winter. Love it or hate it, pruning helps keep the trees healthy and at a manageable size, and increases the production of good sized quality fruit. In the North East, the best time to prune deciduous fruit trees is midJuly to mid-August when the sap flow is reduced and the leaves have fallen making it easier to see the skeleton of the tree. In the first four years formative pruning is done to shape the framework of the tree. This framework should be an open vase shape with five to seven strong branches. This opens up the centre allowing in air and light needed for optimum bud formation, pollination and fruit set. For most pruning jobs, a pair of secateurs, long-handled loppers and a pruning saw are all the tools you should need. Make sure they are clean and sharp. Use the secateurs to prune stems up to 1cm in diameter and either the loppers or pruning saw for thicker stems and branches. When pruning, look for an

outward facing bud and cut just above it on an angle so that the water runs off the bud. Start by removing any branches that are damaged or diseased, any that cross each other or rub against each other or any growing the wrong way. Prune out any branches growing in the centre, any suckers around the trunk and low branches under one metre. Upwards growing branches should be pruned to a manageable height, around 2-2.5metres, so that any work or fruit picking can be done without using a ladder. Peaches, nectarines and apricots need to be pruned hard every year to stimulate new growth which bears the fruit. Apples, pears and plums fruit on older wood which develops fruiting spurs. These look a bit like wooden claws and grow on the side of the lateral branches. Prune the main branches, known as terminals, back to about five buds but leave the laterals to develop fruiting spurs for the next year. Happy gardening.

Medical reasons to desex your dog
TAKING A BREATHER: The group take a break from riding.
“It’s an opportunity to cut yourself off from the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” Mr Dawson said. “It’s just you and your bike.” Mr Dawson said the group was humbled by the kindness and generosity of people they came across, whether they contributed to the fundraising or helped them out with mechanical problems. “The outback spirit just stepped up,” Mr Dawson said. “People in the outback tend to rely on each other, and people were helping out of the kindess of their hearts. “It was more than just making donations – people helped with free accommodation and free repairs, and more. “Generosity is just huge in the outback.” Mr Dawson said that it was not until the ride heading into remote country that he realised just how vast the country was, and
how big an undertaking the ride was. He said at one point in the outback, you can ride for 500 kilometres with no bends, and without running into another person. “You need to stay focused,” he said. He said the wildlife, while awe inspiring, was also something riders had to look out for, and recalls emus running alongside the ride, and huge eagles swooping above and around riders. At the time of going to press, Mr Dawson said the group had raised over $5000 for their cause, and donations are still being taken. Anyone wishing to make donations to the group’s fundraising, or find out more about the ride, can find the group’s Facebook page by searching “Up the guts for cancer research”.
It was more than just making donations – people helped with free accommodation and free repairs, and more. Generosity is just huge in the outback.
A wonderfully funny recollection of the songs, commercials, stories and radio serials of the 1940s and 50s

leave your male dog entire, think again. Just as the female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone can influence the development of pathology in the sex organs of females, so too testosterone can affect the development of pathology in male dogs. It is very unusual to see prostate enlargement (hyperplasia), prostate tumors or perianal tumours in desexed male dogs. If an old entire male dog with prostate hyperplasia is desexed his prostate will usually regress in size substantially (often assisted by “anti-male” hormones). If this doesn’t make you throw the dog in the car and rush to the vets, please note that July is national desexing month and many veterinary clinics are offering incentives to pet owners to desex their pets this month. IN their natural environment female dogs (bitches) have evolved to conceive and have a litter of puppies every oestrus cycle, or about every six months and unlike humans, bitches usually cycle for life. Non desexed (entire) female dogs in a domestic environment that intermittently or never conceive will experience pathological changes to their uterus linings (endometrium) over their lives. Typically this will present clinically as a uterus infection (pyometra) about 6-8 weeks after an oestrus cycle later in life. This is life threatening to the bitch. She will usually require an emergency ovariohysterectomy (removal of the uterus and ovaries) in an unstable and compromised condition which is not conducive to smooth anaesthesia. Desexing bitches as an elective procedure at a young age (~6months) will alleviate the above condition and there is one more fascinating statistic that may prompt you to desex your bitch early. If a bitch is desexed prior to her first oestrus cycle the probability of her developing mammary cancer is reduced by at least 50 per cent. Just before you blokes think it’s okay to

Rest and recover – As well as having a good level of general fitness, you should rest regularly and get adequate sleep each day to start fresh as possible the next day. Check your equipment –Make sure it’s the right type and size for you, and in good condition. Changes in snow conditions may require different equipment setups from one day to another, so check with a ski mechanic if you are unsure. Concentrate on nutrition / hydration – inadequate food and hydration can also increase injury risk. Watch for hypothermia – a fall in body core temperature can impair decision making and coordination so clothing that will keep you warm and dry
reduces the risk of injury as well as keeping you comfortable. Use skin and eye protection – Even though the temperature may be low in alpine environments UV is often high so use a suitable sunscreen and sunglasses or tinted goggles to prevent skin injuries such as sun and wind burn and eye irritation. Be aware of altitude sickness – not usually a problem in Australia, but high altitudes can cause shortness of breath and increased fatigue in some people. To keep up to date with the latest snow reports, events and lift statuses, search the web for your favorite mountain or visit your nearest tourist information centre.

WITH more snowfalls experienced recently across the region, and more runs opening in many resorts, the 2013 ski season is starting to hit its stride. This weekend at Mt Buller will see the Backcountry Film Festival, which promotes the work of grassroots filmmakers who tell compelling stories of backcountry, non-motorised recreation and environmental preservation. The festival will take place on Saturday, July 20 and more information is available at www. backcountryfilmfestival.com. At Falls Creek, this week’s events include the Mim Sodergrens Women’s Program (July 22-26). The program is especially designed for women, by women, with experienced female instructors, for skiers to improve their skills in a supportive environment. Mt Hotham, meanwhile, will host their Victorian Biathlon Championships at the Whiskey Flat Biathlon Range (July 20-21), with competitors ranging in age from 12 to over 60. Sports Medicine Australia has offered the following tips to ski safely and avoid injury this snow season: Work on your fitness Regardless of your age and level of fitness, a suitable exercise program can help prepare you for the slopes. Strengthening of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups of the thigh are especially important.

THE KITCHEN PHILOSOPHER MOVIE
Ping Pong (PG) EIGHT players with 703 years’ experience between them compete in the World Over 80s Table Tennis Championships in Inner Mongolia. This film is as much about the tenacity of the human spirit as it is a meditation on mortality.
Showground shenanigans LIVING near the local showgrounds means we get to see a diverse range of things on our daily walks. From agricultural shows, to sheepdog trials, to football, cricket, netball, show jumping, ram sales, expos, tractor pulls and circuses – we get the lot at various times of the year. You may remember an article from some time back where I spoke about two elephants who were camped at the ‘showies’ for a couple of weeks and how my then puppy, Scruff, was completely taken aback when he saw them (and the magnificent - from the canine perspective anyway - size of their poos!) Well, I guess Scruff and Moses must have become somewhat immune to the sights and smells of the local showgrounds, if this morning’s response is anything to go by. We left the house as usual, the dogs scampering through the fallen leaves and having a merry old time. As we turned the corner towards the showgrounds, however, they spotted a man walking a dog towards us. I noted (and I assume the dogs also noted) that this was not a ‘regular’ walker in our patch. Thus they duly started pulling on their leads and barking furiously at the poor little dog who seemed very anxious to be elsewhere and attempted to pull his master in the opposite direction. As we passed one another, we (the humans at least) managed to exchange some morning pleasantries – well as much as you can when you have the ferocious Hounds of Baskerville baying for Border Collie blood and attempting to rip your arms from their sockets. We both gave a quick smile, a roll of our eyes and dragged our reluctant companions in the opposite directions.

Savage Tide by Greg Barron INTELLIGENCE officer Marika Hartmann captures an extremist foot-soldier guilty of a massacre of school children and aid workers in Southern Somalia. Renditioned to a CIA ‘black site’, the prisoner hints at a terror plot in the making, and when Marika and ex-Special Forces colleague PJ Johnson team up to investigate, they uncover a cold-blooded conspiracy that will decimate the cities of the West. Published by HarperCollins
NB: You may have noted my dogs are not the most well behaved or responsive; a fact further borne out when we got home from our walk. Scruff went directly to the shed to inspect his empty food bowl (in the hope, no doubt, that some kibbles had miraculously appeared in his absence). I called several times to him and could clearly see his rear end from the kitchen door, however he did not move even a millimetre in response, so I guess that kind of highlights my lack of influence. Well, anyway, back to the walk. After dragging the dogs away from their new mortal enemy, we headed towards the showgrounds. I could see the circus caravans had arrived and some makeshift animal enclosures had been erected. From the distance I could make a couple of small donkeys, some miniature ponies, two goats and a pair of shaggy Highland cows. As we came closer I also spotted some ducks and geese and a few other animals. Now, given that my dogs had just ‘cracked it’ over a small animal of their own species, one might expect they would be slightly perturbed (or even just slightly interested) in the sudden and unexpected appearance of a whole menagerie of animals in ‘their’ showgrounds. But no. As we walked by the enclosures, they both gave a casual sniff, remarked to one another “circus is back”, peed on the nearest grass tussock and trotted on with an air of bored disinterest. In fact, it was me craning my neck around to get a better look at the visitors, while the dogs ploughed resolutely on with their walk. Go figure.

Christmas pudding, filled with booze-soaked raisins, citrus peel, golden syrup and blackberry nip. This luscious, russet liquid is hypnotically delicious, all warm and rich with ripe, berry fruity goodness, and coming to a reluctant end with a lip gloss sweet finish. Bring it out to end a meal with friends if you want to spread some Christmas cheer, but be warned they’ll polish it off before you can say jingle bells. Or be a scrooge and leave them with that crusty topped old bottle of Irish cream you’ve probably got on the top shelf, and keep the Muscat to enjoy under the mistletoe with the one you love. Find our more at www. baileysofglenrowan.com.au.
WE make these at the café because we make our own buttermilk ricotta. It is always very fresh and creamy, and I find we can’t make enough to keep up the demand. These parcels are lovely with a salad for lunch, or you could make small ones for a cocktail party. Silverbeet is easy to grow, so you can make them quite cheaply if you grow it yourself, or you can substitute it with spinach. Method Fry your onions in butter until translucent and soft. While your onions are cooking, wash the silverbeet well and shake dry. Slice the white stalks very finely, and add to onions. When the stalks are soft, start to add

Roll over to completely enclose the mixture, with the join finishing underneath, cut into two or three logs, or smaller if making for a party. Continue until all the mixture is used. Place your logs on a greased baking tray not touching, brush with egg wash and bake at 180 degrees Celsius until browned and heated through.

IT’S time to celebrate Christmas in July, and nothing warms the cockles of your heart on an icy winter’s day like a fine, fortified wine. Thankfully our region has some of the best in the world, and a trip to Glenrowan wouldn’t be complete without stocking up on some stickies. I had to giggle when a virtually teetotal colleague admitted he was disappointed to find out Baileys didn’t sell any Irish cream, but a woodfired pizza and a glass of red apparently softened the blow. The historic cellar door and its museum to winemaking are a treat visit, and the perfect venue to sample some heartwarming reds. One of my favorites is the Classic Muscat made by winemaker Paul Dahlenburg, and it is as ultimately rewarding as its silky good looks promise. Pour a glass, breathe deeply and soak up some amazing aromas, like you’ve stepped into nanna’s kitchen while she’s making

SHARING: Australian businesses are being invited to share their experience in promoting mental wellbeing.
M
ental ill health is one of the major obstacles to a productive and rewarding working life, which has driven Australian government agency Comcare to become a founding member of a landmark alliance to help create mentally healthy Australian workplaces. The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance is a collaborative partnership between business, the mental health sector and government, and was officially launched by the National Mental Health Commission at the beginning of July. The alliance is providing the business sector with practical guidance about
mental health designed to drive sustainable changes in business culture and practice, and is developing an evidencebased business case for promoting mentally healthy workplaces. Comcare chief executive officer Paul O’Connor said too many workers are not working because of a mental illness. He said they are missing out on the identity, social connections, sense of community and financial security that comes from having a job. “We must all do our bit towards assisting people with a mental illness to enter the workforce or provide better rehabilitation for
those with a mental illness returning to employment, Mr O’Connor said. “Better still, we need to get better at preventing harm from happening in the first place, through the way work is designed and managed. As part of the project the Alliance is inviting all Australian business to share their experiences in promoting mental wellbeing. The Call for Good Practice is open to all business until July 28 at the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance website and will help inform the development of practical resources for businesses to be released later in the year.

WITH interest rates at their lowest, is this the time when you should be building some certainty into your investments and purchasing some government bonds. Not sure how they work. When you invest in bonds with the government, you are effectively lending money at an agreed interest rate for a certain period of time at the rate applicable at the time of purchase. In return, the government promises to pay you interest at regular intervals and repay your loan at the end of the term. So what’s different you may ask, but investments in a government bond will be very safe and the interest rate to be paid on the face value of the bond when issued, as well as the principal is guaranteed. So what happens, if when I purchase the bond interest rates fall a couple of months later from the 5 per cent that was payable at purchase to 2.5 per cent then the income from your bond would be twice as valuable. In effect this would increase the price of the bond, but if interest rates doubled, the income from the bond would be only half as valuable. This would decrease the price of the bond.
