Ŷ INNOVATIVE: BMW M235i has a lovely streamlined look that tapers beautifully to the tail. A COUPLE of weeks back I concluded my road test of the BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe by writing that I had fallen in love with it. But, costing close to $300,000 on the road, it was way out of my reach. Now I’ve tested its little brother, the BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe. Did I fall in love with it and its price tag that starts at just $72,990 plus on-roads and decide to buy one? Wait till the end of this review to find out. STYLING Designing a sports coupe with the convenience of four doors isn’t easy and the small-
By EWAN KENNEDY er the car, the harder it is. So the M235i doesn’t have the lovely long sleek shape of the M850i. But it has a lovely streamlined look that tapers nicely to a relatively short tail. It’s taller at the rear than purists would like, but if you’re going to have back seats that’s hard to avoid. The BMW twin radiator grills are lower than usual, but that’s balanced out nicely by the large sub grilles. INTERIOR The front seats are sports items and provide good side
support. They aren’t as low as you might expect and I found getting my ageing body in and out less of a problem than in a pure two-door sport Space is somewhat cramped in the back and tall folks may come closer to the ceiling than they like. They might also have to come to an agreement with the people in front on legroom and knee space. That’s more than balanced out by the fact that those in the rear don’t have to contort their way through the front doors. Genuine leather trim is to a high standard and really does
give the feeling you’re riding in a significantly more expensive car. The M235i xDrive has, of course, M Sport seats including electric adjustment on the fronts. INFOTAINMENT We loved the sound quality of the Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound in our test car. Designers of cars and sound systems are working closely with one another to produce pretty good musical output. You’re not going to mistake it for your upmarket sound system at home, though. The twin 10.25-inch dash-
board and infotainment screens look great. BMW’s Connected Package Professional has the 7.0-version operating and the new version is lightning fast and generally intuitive. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Power for the M235i xDrive comes from a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder unit that produces up to 225kW. Torque is 450Nm over a great spread from 1750 to 4500 revs. The torque convertor automatic transmission has eight forward ratios and can be con-
trolled by paddle shifters. The xDrive in the Gran Coupe’s title signifies it has all-wheel-drive, which is virtually vital, given the big torque outputs and the fact that keen drivers love to take their Bimmer to the max when the mood takes them. SAFETY Features to help avoiding a crash include Driving Assistance with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Approach Control Warning with city-braking intervention, Rear Cross Traffic Warning, and Rear Collision Prevention.

By DEREK OGDEN SUBARU has taken the ďŹ rst steps - albeit small ones - to an all-electric automobile future with the XV and Forester models in petrol / electric hybrid form on sale in Australia. It has chosen its best-selling sports utility vehicles to introduce its plans for at least 40 per cent of all sales be made up of electric vehicles and hybrids by 2030. In a tie-up with Toyota, with whom it shared development of the BRZ / Toyota 86 sports cars, Subaru says it plans to reduce its ‘well to wheel’ emissions (from sourcing raw materials to manufacturing a complete car) before the year 2050 by 90 per cent compared with 2010 levels. The Subaru SUVs feature identical petrol / electric en-
gines, with the XV Hybrid, Subaru, claiming a 14 per cent improvement in fuel efďŹ ciency over equivalent petrol variants in the urban cycle and more than 7 per cent in the combined cycle, while Forester offers improvement of more than 19 per cent in the urban cycle and over 9 per cent in the combined cycle, compared to 2.5-litre petrol variants. Subaru is the ďŹ rst to admit it comes to the electric vehicle segment from a low level, with Subaru Australia managing director, Colin Christie saying: “With the launch into showrooms across Australia, we can see small but important opportunities to enter a growing space in which Subaru will have an increasing presence in the not too distant future, with a variety of increasingly sophisticated
and efficient hybrid - and later electric - vehicles.â€? The single-model XV Hybrid AWD, the test vehicle, sells for $35,580, plus onroad costs. This compares with $29,240 for the entrylevel petrol-only XV and $36,530 for the range-topping petrol 2.0i-S model. It comes under Subaru’s ďŹ ve-year unlimited kilometre warranty. The lithium-ion battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 kilometres. A 12-month / 12,500 km capped price service plan also applies. STYLING Nothing (almost) to see here. Based on the Subaru Global Platform, there’s little exterior difference with the petrol-only XV. It shares all outside dimensions but height, which is 20 mm less due to skinnier roof rails. Like the entry-level XV petrol, the Hybrid has halogen headlamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. It doesn’t have a spare wheel to make way for the under-oor battery. Instead there’s a repair kit.
