It’s aimed at those who want the practicality of having good access to the back seats, but at the same time want to enjoy flair in their driving. It’s low and wide and with a swooping roofline and all our neighbours and friends who saw it loved the shape. Compared to the A7 the Audi S7 has a blacked-out grille, a body kit and rides on 21-inch alloy wheels.

Our test car for the week was in a metallic white that certainly mates beautifully with the blacked-out areas. INTERIOR The cabin is elegant in its style, with Valcona covered leather seats. There are Nappa trimmings on the centre console, armrests and dashboard. The front seats are well shaped and comfortable. The driver’s one has many adjustments to let you quickly tailor it to your exact

needs. We experimented with different settings to suit city and open road driving and soon learned to get the best for the condition and desires. While there are seats for three in the rear, the Audi S7 really is better suited to two back there. There’s good legroom in the back but there are times when the person sitting behind a tall driver will have to do a deal on which person gets the most comfort. The extra-large boot

opening gives access to a spacious 525-litre cargo area. It’s comparatively shallow, understandably so due to the sleek styling. INFOTAINMENT The premium Bang & Olufsen sound system is excellent. It has 3D satellite navigation and a DAB+ radio. As we live in an area with tall apartment buildings the DAB+ struggled to get a signal too often. Which can be irritating. tegration is automatic and worked seamlessly. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. There’s 331kW at 6700rpm and 600Nm over a huge spread from 1900 to 5000rpm. In other words, you have a torque plateau rather than peak so you have maximum grunt virtually all the time.

Toyota Yaris crosses into new territory By DEREK OGDEN WITH the launch of the Prius almost a quarter century ago, Toyota confidently threw its hat in the ring of the petrol / electric powertrain. So, it’s no surprise the Japanese auto giant, with a similar flourish, is the first to offer a hybrid in the small sports utility vehicle market. At the same time in 1994, the company’s small-car expertise and rich SUV heritage was setting the standard with the RAV4, which was to become Australia’s and the world’s best-selling SUV. Now these have come together with the Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid, based on the latest compact Yaris hatchback, while the RAV4 has gone up in size to the medium SUV segment. The Yaris Cross hybrid system is available in both twowheel drive and electric allwheel drive variants in three grades: GX, GXL and Urban, to deliver a city-friendly runabout, or out-of-town soft-road trekker. On test was a Yaris GXL allwheel drive hybrid, which at $34,990, plus on-road costs, falls mid-range between the entry-level GX 2WD petrol ($26,990) and Urban AWD hybrid ($37,990).

Yaris Cross is covered by a five-year warranty, seven years for engine and driveline, and up to 10-year warranty on the hybrid battery, with a capped price for the first five services at $205 each. STYLING While sharing distinctive styling with the recently launched Yaris hatch, Toyota’s first entry into the light SUV market carries a sense of robustness and high-riding demeanour favoured by buyers of bigger genuine off-roaders. A bold face features a split grille with a lower diffuser, flanked by deep-set LED daytime running lights and slimline headlight clusters, while at the rear a squared-off rear hatch suggests a practical purpose. The GXL rides on 16-inch alloys. Likewise, at the rear, the broad horizontal lines connecting the integrated taillights and squared-off rear hatch suggest a robust and practical attitude. The test vehicle had a milky light brown exterior finish with the suitably modern moniker Latte. However, to those in the know, this shade does hark back to the ubiquitous workhorse Land Cruiser overcoat of old. Toyota’s little joke, perhaps?
