Do you speak the language of your ‘tradies’ Written by | realestateview.com.au in buying COMMUNICATING with tradies can sometimes feel like you’ve landed in a foreign-speaking country, where you know just enough to make a greeting or to apologise for your lack of lingo. ÁȸƏƳǣƺɀ ɀȵƺƏǸ Ə ˢɖƺȇɎ ɎƺƬǝȇǣƬƏǼ ǼƏȇguage of the trades and some of them assume we totally understand, when we often have no idea what they’re talking about. After all, how often have you needed to know what a joist hanger is, or what ɎȒ ƳȒ ɯǣɎǝ Ə ȵɖƳƳǼƺ ˢƏȇǕƺِ For any renovation it’s important to have a joint understanding of the job and the plan. Confusion and lack of unƳƺȸɀɎƏȇƳǣȇǕ ȒǔɎƺȇ ǼƺƏƳɀ ɎȒ ƬȒȇˢǣƬɎِ Given generally you will both speak English as a common language, you’re in a good position to begin breaking down any “tradie-speak” barriers to gain an understanding of your project. What often stops us is a fear of seeming silly, or getting “ripped off” because of our lack of knowledge. But we’ve found the vast majority of tradies are amazing and want to help you. It’s daunting knowing where to start on a big renovation or maintenance related issue, and when there’s a whole host of various trades required, we need to get it right. Our advice is to ask lots and lots of questions to fully understand what is going to happen, after all you’re the one about to spend your hard-earned cash. One thing we keep in mind - if it’s
ƳǣǔˡƬɖǼɎ ɎȒ ƬȒȅȅɖȇǣƬƏɎƺ ɯǣɎǝ ɎȸƏƳƺɀ at the beginning, it’s probably not going to get better as the job goes on. ɖȸ ˡȸɀɎ ƬȒȇɎƏƬɎɀ ɯǣɎǝ ɎȸƏƳƺɀ Əȸƺ ǣȇ essence an interview process to join our “team”. We do a few key things to achieve this: Start with the end in mind; describe to them what the end-goal is, no matter how big your vision. Are you looking to do maintenance, or is this about your dream bathroom renovation? Be clear yourself about the outcome you want. Remember that once you
tell them about the “vision” you can always scale it back. Then listen to how they describe the job back to you to see if they’ve listened and understood. Then ask: What are all the different trades they might need and how will they ensure everyone is onsite when they’re needed? How long should you expect the job to take? What materials are needed, and the availability of goods?
What are the contingencies to think about - what could go wrong and how would they manage that? If things do go wrong (which is not unusual as renovations often uncover other issues) who will be the key person to keep you informed and get your approval for any variations needed. Will they provide a quote along with a “scope of works” and a schedule so you know their plan. And lastly, use that wonderful word “why” - keep asking it until the answer makes sense or seems logical.

Ŷ GROUND BREAKER: Sleek lines of the new Mazda MX-30 EV are more coupe than SUV.
MX-30 EV is the first ever pure electric vehicle from Mazda. Launched here in April 2021 it’s a compact SUV, and joins the MX-30 MHEV mild-hybrid petrol/electric MHEV variant. The name is a bit confusing given that previous cars with the MX prefix have been sporty coupes or convertibles, most notably the iconic MX-5 but when you look at the MX-30’s sleek profile it does start to make sense. While the MX-30 MHEV comes in three variants, Evolve, Touring and Astina priced from $33,990 to $40,990, the EV is only available in the top-spec
By ALISTAIR KENNEDY Astina at $65,490. On-road costs need to be added. STYLING MX-30 is built on the same platform as the CX-30 and shares many features. It’s slightly taller to cater for the batteries and, in line with its claim to an MX heritage, it does have a more fastback rear profile towards the rear. POWERTRAIN The MX-30 EV is powered by a 35.5 kWh lithiumion battery. It’s a comparatively small battery when compared to its main rivals which equates to a lower drive range but, because it is lighter, it does make for
sportier performance. While others locate the charging points at the front of the vehicle those in the Mazda are at the more traditional location at the rear side where most fuel tank fillers are found. Mazda Australia quotes a time of three hours to charge from 20 to 80 per cent with AC and 36 minutes with DC. DRIVING The MX-30 EV is sharp enough at take-off but without the torque steer that can affect some of its more powerful rivals. Out on the open road the MX-30 EV comes alive with its light weight and low centre of gravity - courtesy of
the size and location of the battery - providing driving dynamics that none of the EVs that we’ve driven previously can match. Handling is accurate and smooth with the steering wheel providing the right amount of feedback. Cornering is accurate enough, but this is not a sports sedan, and is certainly not planned to be one. Like many electric vehicles Mazda MX-30 EV uses an artificial engine sound that’s piped into the cabin through the audio system. Opinion is divided between those who like the sporty sound it produces and others who love the quieter running which electric cars
provide. For those in the latter category, it can be turned off but only through a complex combination of the brake pedal and multiple clicks of the left and right paddle shifters. A Mazda dealer should be able to provide the details, otherwise go into Google. SUMMING UP The crucial issues with electric vehicles are price and range. For volume sales to occur, the first needs to come down and the second to go up. At $65,490 the MX-30 EV Astina is around the same price as two of its similarly-equipped competitors, the Hyundai Kona Highlander Extended Range ($64,000) and Kia Niro Sport
($65,990). However, it lags well behind their 450-plus kilometre range and that effectively limits potential sales to city dwellers which is a great pity because the Mazda’s driving dynamics are so well-suited to rural conditions. Having said that, Mazda has been sitting in second place behind Toyota in overall sales for a number of years. With the popularity of electric vehicles sure to rise in future, brand loyalty will no doubt attract many of those looking to make an environmental statement both through the car’s zero emissions but also its use of recycled components.

Finer points all round for Compass By DEREK OGDEN THE new Compass is out to point the way for Jeep to gain ground in the small sports utility vehicle segment, one of the most competitive markets in the automotive world. The legendary US fourwheel drive maker, famous for its Rubicon test regimen on the infamous eponymous trail, a 22-mile route, part road and part hellish 4x4 track, in the Sierra Nevada of the western United States, which all genuine off-road Jeeps have to endure during development, has imbued the MY22 Compass with the finer things in SUV life. As Tom Noble, marketing and communications manager, Jeep Australia puts it, since its launch in 2017, the Compass has been renowned for its off-road capability, now we’re pairing that with advanced technology and premium interior styling. The updated range kicks off with the Compass Launch Edition 2.4-litre petrol, sixspeed automatic, front-wheel drive, with a focus on technology, safety and convenience in an affordable package - $37,950, plus on-road costs. The Compass Limited ups the ante with ninespeed auto and four-wheel
drive, for $43,950, followed by the 80th Anniversary ($47,941), Compass S-Limited ($46,950) and the Trailhawk 2.0-litre turbodiesel ($51,250). On test was the Compass S-Limited. STYLING Although classified in the lightweight (compact) division, on first glance the Compass could well tip the scales into the middleweight class, such is the muscled body. The wagon maintains the traditional Jeep upright stance, restyled with sculpted surfaces and 3-D effect added to the sevenslot grille. The once separate foglamp housing is now integrated into a single opening in the front bumper. The black-based S-Limited test car was accented with metallic grey finishes on roof, exterior badging and new Granite Crystal multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. Termed Neutral Grey by the maker, blink and you’ll miss them. Neutral, indeed. INTERIOR Jeep’s genuine go-anywhere mid-range off-roaders, not generally known for their stylish, premium craftsmanlike cabin interiors, have taken a turn for the better with the new Compass S-Limited. Many elements of the cabin have been updated with special attention being
given to the dashboard, centre console and door panels, all featuring quality materials. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The new Compass S-Limited relies on Jeep’s tried and tested 2.4-litre Tigershark petrol engine, mated with a new nine-speed automatic transmission and Jeep Active Drive 4x4 and Selec-Terrain off-road systems. DRIVING The Compass S-Limited 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine went about a not-toodemanding workload with up to five occupants, plus their gear without much fuss. Given a bit of a push off the mark, however, the odd gearshift was jerky but once up to cruising speed, the vehicle handled the bitumen and sections of gravel road with alacrity through efficient power delivery. Steering was on the stiff side, even on smooth bitumen. As for fuel consumption, Jeep claims a combined urban / highway consumption of 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The test S-Limited recorded 10 litres per 100 kilometres across a range of driving conditions. At night the front lighting shone in more ways than one, the LED lamps twice as bright as the previous Xenons, with greater depth of

field and wider beam. The seats were a trifle unwelcoming, being flat, firm and lacking lateral support, which could be a problem in rough going off road. Head and shoulder space were more-than ample for average-size occupants. SUMMARY Jeep has realised it cannot rely on the company’s raw off-road credentials to match the sophistication of the modern compact SUV. The Compass is heading in the right direction to take up the battle against some of the most competitive rivals on the planet. Good luck.
