Following their sell-out collaboration last year, each piece of this collection reflects the mother and daughter’s Indigenous heritage and personal stories, with distinctive new patterns weaving together traditional and contemporary colours and textures. Their detailed artworks have been carefully translated onto beautiful organic cotton bedlinen, tassel cushions, home décor, kids’ bedlinen and nursery items. To mark their renewed partnership, Miimi and Jiinda have crafted pieces that tell visual stories about country and kin f rom the oldest surviving culture in the world. In every piece the pair express deep love and appreciation for their culture and identity as First Nations women. Each of the designs in the collection are inspired by the Gumbaynggirr land where Miimi and Jiinda live, considered to be some of the most picturesque areas in Australia. One of the new bedlinen designs, “Jagun” (which means land and is pictured above right), features symbols of birthing caves, representing the Gumbaynggirr birth-
ing caves on Country in New South Wales, where their female ancestors delivered their babies. Miimi and Jiinda took time to share their thoughts about collaborating again with a major retailer and their personal favourites f rom this collection. Did you have complete control over the design process? When creating this range we worked with the amazing Adairs design team to create products we felt best expressed the essence and story of Miimi and Jiinda. For this second collaboration it was exciting to work off customer feedback we received f rom the f irst one, as we decided on which original artworks to base the new collection. From there it enabled us to share our stories behind the artworks and the designs. What do you have to consider when designing something so personal? When creating the products for a mass market, we had to ensure the designs ran true to who we are and what we create, which was considered in every piece created. Ŷ FUTURE PROOF: Neat shape of the Kia Niro leans in the direction of SUV rather than wagon. KIA is getting very serious about the future of electrical power in all of its vehicles. It offers its small-medium Niro SUV in full electric, plug-in hybrid and basic hybrid format. Prices range from $65,990 for the full electric Sport all the way down to $39,990 for the basic Hybrid S. We have tested all three in recent weeks, unfortunately COVID-19 severely restricted our movements so we will concentrate on the hybrid in this review as it’s likely to be the biggest seller. When things settle down, we may be able to test the

There is, of course, the Tiger Nose grille, which in EV format isn’t really a grille, but rather a series of dimples. We aren’t sure we like it, but we’ll leave you to come up with your own thoughts. The Hybrid and PHEV do have a large grille that melds nicely with the headlights and the openings in the lower bumper.
The sides have full length indentations on the doors, the rear is squared off nicely to maximise load carrying rather than to give a sleek tail. The slim D-pillars make for good sighting when reversing into a parking spot. INTERIOR Fit and finish is to a high quality and the materials look to be from a car in the next price range up. There’s good space in the cabin thanks to the squared off shape and good leg and knee room in the front seats. The rear is setup for three but, as is usually the case, the cen-
tre seat is best left to a slim person. Three children works fine. The widescreen digital instrument cluster sits inside a tall binnacle which is very much in the traditional manner - we like that. POWERTRAIN Kia Niro Hybrid has a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 64kWh electric motor. It drives the front wheels through a sixspeed dual-clutch automatic. DRIVING Niro’s suspension is set up for Europe, where it has been on sale for several years. Australian drivers tend to lean in
the direction of Europeans rather than Koreans or Americans so it’s likely to suit most drivers here. Tell your car salesman that you want to take it for a decent test drive to see if it fills your needs. The steering was rather lighter than we like but feedback is good. It turns in well and follows the direction of the bends without any real need for correction. Braking to charge the battery can be adjusted via the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. We like to put as much energy back into the battery as possible so we let the car
do most of the braking. It can’t quite be driven as a one pedal car, but comes close to it. Ride comfort is good and the car is generally very quiet. Some rough roads (sealed, not dirt) bounce it more than we like, but that’s all part of the endless comfort/handling compromise. SUMMING UP Kia Niro Hybrid is an impressive car at a realistic price. It does its bit to save the planet and we like that. Frankly we would rather buy the Hybrid than the Niro full electric as it costs far less - sorry about that planet.

The Great Wall Motors dual cab 4x4 ute initially made a name for itself with a sub-30 grand drive-away price. The later model, named the Steed, continued the trend, just, at $29,990. Traffic sign recognition and over-speed alert keep the driver honest and hill-start assist and hill-descent control take over on inclines and offroad adventures. DRIVING A trap for the unwary. On many vehicles there is a grab handle on the driver and passenger door pillars to help climbing into the cabin or to steady occupants in rough going.
While engine performance has been boosted, far from firing off the mark, the CannonL huffs and puffs away from rest, which I suppose is only natural with such a small engine trying to shift close to five tonnes when there’s a load on board. The eight-speed auto transmission does its best. It’s more comfortable at cruising speeds. Steering raises some questions: stiff and resistant at slow speeds, shifting to fast and loose with little driver feedback as the vehicle hits its straps. With a turning circle of more than 13 metres, the truck throws up some parking problems. Fortunately, functionality is

to the fore when it comes to the rear of the Cannon-L. The tub has a protective sprayedon lining and loading from the back is made easier by a retractable step allowing access to the front of the tray. On the downside, the distance between the wheel arches is not enough to take a standard-size Aussie pallet. Towing is rated at 3000 kg braked, but read the small print. SUMMARY With price tag alone ($37,990 driveaway) the only consideration, the GWM Cannon-L could be an attractive proposition. However, questions remain over build quality, reliability and resale value of the would-be premium pickup.
