Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce: a joy to behold, a joy to drive
Ŷ CHE BELLA: This Italian machine is simply gorgeous from any angle, inside and out. MID-SIZED sedans are a bit out of favour at the moment as many people are switching to SUVs. But if you want some pizzazz in your life, love driving and don’t need to carry lots of stuff in the back then the Alfa Romeo Veloce is well worth considering. STYLING Gorgeous from every angle - just as you would expect from Italian stylists - the Giulia Veloce somehow doesn’t look like a practical sedan, but rather like an extended coupe. However, before rushing out and buying a Giulia Veloce see my comments on the

Indeed, it’s almost the type of car you would go out to your garage simply to enjoy it even if you’re not planning to drive it. The leather seats feature embossed headrests. They’re nicely bolstered and upholstered. The driver’s seat has preset memories and we were able to quickly set it up to our tastes.
It’s a medium-large family sedan, but has rather limited legroom in the back seats. Check for yourself before you buy if you’re planning to carry adults in the rear. DRIVING It’s Italian, it’s sporty and it loves life - what more can you ask to take for a nice drive in an Alfa on your favourite hilly roads? Preferably when its very early on a Sunday morning there’s no one else on the road. So, you jump into the Alfa, hit the Start button on the steering wheel and off you go. Thanks to a well-tuned
turbocharger peak torque is available nice and low in the rev range. There’s more hesitation when you floor it off the line than I like, though. Or that’s possibly because I’ve just stepped out of several electric cars which have their torque peak from just one rpm. Once it’s up and running throttle from the Veloce’s response is very good and if you do anticipate the response, it’s great to drive. The brake pedal is offset to the right which takes away the added safety and car control offered by left-foot braking.
The optional dual-pane sunroof fitted to our test car pinched a couple of inches from headroom. Which meant I couldn’t set the seat to the height I wanted. Okay so it’s fashionable to sit very low and look cool in a car like this, but if you’re much above average height make sure to check this on your pre-purchase test drive. Rear-wheel drive with a limited-slip diff means the Giulia Veloce is sprightly and always happy to have a go at any corner you throw it at. It’s balanced and gives you feedback though the wheel and your body to let you know
what it’s doing. SUMMING UP Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce lives up to its name - Veloce stands for speed in English and this machine is certainly that. Rapid not only in speed, but also in the way it grabs your attention and calls out to be driven with plenty of velocity. We’ve driven Alfas in Italy at velocities that would have us sent to jail in Australia. Hmm... I feel the need for speed and might call the Alfa Romeo PR folks in Australia to see if they can put one aside for me next time I’m over there.

Go off-road with the rugged Nissan Navara PRO-4X By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE Nissan Navara PRO4X utility was launched in December 2020 to replace the previous N-Trek Warrior as the brand’s top-end serious off-road vehicle. Like most of its competitors Navara is sold in a variety of bodies, everything from a bare bones cab-chassis, through single cab and extended cab to a four-door double cab, all with automatic transmission as standard but many with the option of a manual gearbox. STYLING The most noticeable external differences between the PRO-4X and the rest of the Navara range are the black features that replace the chrome. These include the grille with its dark grey surrounds, side window surrounds, privacy glass, stainless steel sports bar, door hands and mirrors, roof rails,
and fender flares. A full-size steel spare wheel is bolted beneath the tray. DRIVING The seats are large, supportive and comfortable although the lack of reach adjustment on the steering wheel did restrict our choice of driving position. Large windscreen, side windows and mirrors provide excellent visibility to the front and side although the three-panel rear window and large side headrests do restrict the rear view somewhat. On 4WD high with the OffRoad drive mode selected and the around-view camera helping to guide us we covered some moderately rutted and slippery terrain without any issues. SUMMING UP Realistically the PRO-4X is more about looking more rugged than the other mod-
els in the Navara range and the change from chrome to black, at least to our eyes, certainly succeed. While it is a capable enough off-roader if you’re looking to get stuck into some serious off-road adventures, we’d suggest doing a comparison test between the PRO-4X and the new Warrior to decide whether the latter can justify the extra $9000-odd outlay.
