Kia’s first pure electric vehicle is under test downunder KIA’S first dedicated BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) has been subjected to Kia Australia’s rigorous Ride and Handling Program. The company’s Australia’s Ride and Handling Engineer, Graeme Gambold, who has localised the ride of over 50 Kia models during the last 10 years, came away astonished by the performance of the EV6. “I just love driving the Kia EV6, it’s a car that just wants corners,” he said. “It is so engaging and so rewarding to drive. “Personally, as a chassis dynamist, I think the biggest part of that enjoyment is the width of the battery in the
By EWAN KENNEDY car. “A typical ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle has an engine and a drivetrain that has a high centre of gravity but it’s all in the centre of the vehicle therefore it works like a moment in roll. “But with a dedicated BEV, it has a big flat battery in it, so it has to lift the energy on the inside to actually upset the car, creating a very flat roll dynamic. “This makes the EV6 feel very light, nimble and responsive. “One of the things we are always tuning for in Australia is large body movements on
country roads at 100 km/h and that is always manifested with a high centre of gravity roll dynamic in conventional cars. “Electric cars don’t have as much of that, they have a lot of vertical movement, because of the weight but they don’t have the lateral roll, so we can use that as a bit of a tuning tool.” General manager of product at Kia Australia, Roland Rivero, is very proud of Kia Australia’s commitment to its local ride and handling program. “Our local tuning program is part of our DNA and a key component to Kia’s success in Australia,” he said.
“We’ve aimed to inject a fun-to-drive character in our products, but most importantly give drivers the feeling of control and confidence when driving a Kia in a variety of conditions.” Kia EV6 is the first dedicated Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) produced by Kia using the all-new ElectricGlobal Modular Platform (E-GMP) and forms the first part of Kia’s transition to the new era of electrification under the new brand slogan, ‘Movement that inspires’. EV6 is the first of 11 new BEV models due from Kia arriving by 2026 with seven built on E-GMP architecture and four derivative EVs
based on existing models. Along with the EV6, the Concept EV9 represents the brand’s recent leadership in designing and developing desirable, high-tech, zero-emissions vehicles and recently set out its vision to become a truly sustainable, responsible, and innovative mobility solutions leader, announcing a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. Around 500 units of the EV6 have been earmarked for Australia during 2022 and the allocation will be staggered throughout the year. Kia Australia says it’s in continuous dialogue with head office about this number with
hopes of increasing it. The EV6 will be sold through the Kia dealer network and over 90 per cent of the Kia dealer network is currently set up to sell and service EV6. Kia EV6 will initially be introduced in Australia with the long-range (77.4 kWh) highvoltage battery pack only and offered in two grades; base in rear-wheel drive only and GT-Line with RWD or allwheel drive AWD options, the latter offering enhanced dynamic capability in even the most challenging conditions. The performance ‘GT’ version of the EV6 with follow in late 2022 or early 2023.

GENESIS GV80 3.0D AWD LAUNCHED late in 2020, the Genesis GV80 is the luxury Korean car maker’s first SUV. Since then, the smaller GV70 and GV60 have been added in rapid succession, as the brand continues to evolve. As the most expensive model in a range that now comprises two sedans and three SUVs, GV80 assumes the mantle of flagship of the range. It’s designed to go head-tohead with the likes of Lexus and Volvo as well as lower echelon offerings from the Germans. Although it carries a threefigure price, it’s targeted at buyers from the big end of town, many of whom will recognise the name -- but know little or nothing about the brand. The important thing, however, is that Genesis is at least on their radar. STYLING GV80 is a big, impressivelooking machine, at just under five metres in length with a kerb weight of about 2300kg. Inside the cabin is an exercise in understatement. It’s all there, but presented in a way that is not overwhelming like some German cars. There’s a wide sweeping dash that provides the platform for the large, low-profile touchscreen. The 12-way power-adjust-

The second row offers oodles of room for adults, while the third-row seats are average in size and earmarked only for occasional use. GV80 is offered in four variants, with three powertrains, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, five or seven seats, with an optional $10,000 Luxury Package that offers a smorgasbord of features. Our test vehicle was the seven-seater 3.0D AWD, priced from $103,476, or $113,000 driveaway (prices vary depending on where you are located). Standard luxury appointments include a mood-lit cabin with leather and real wood trim, a huge 14.5-inch HD touchscreen, 12.0-inch Head Up Display (HUD), panoramic, dual-pane sunroof and a power-operated tailgate -- not forgetting 21-speaker Lexicon audio. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS Entry five-seat GV80 2.5T RWD is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 224kW of power and 422Nm of torque, with drive to the rear wheels. GV80 2.5T AWD adds allwheel drive and a third-row
of seats. GV80 3.0D AWD introduces a refined, all-new, 3.0-litre straight-six turbo diesel with 204kW of power and hefty 588Nm of torque. The flagship GV80 3.5T AWD is headlined by the allnew, powerhouse 3.5-litre turbo petrol V6 that produces an impressive 279kW and 530Nm. An eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddles is standard across the range. DRIVING In the absence of a hybrid or some other wallet-friendly option, the diesel is our preferred option. It provides an impressive 588Nm of heavy hitting torque but uses just 8.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. Torque is the low-end grunt that big V8s are so good at producing. Diesel achieves the same result, it just does it in a more leisurely fashion and uses less fuel in the process. There are two petrol options -- a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo at $95,476 ($8000 less), or 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 at $108,476 ($5000 more) -but why bother? The eight-speed traditional style auto is smooth and refined, with only the occasional hiccup. Punch the accelerator and
the GV80 gets moving, more quickly than it actually feels, with effortless roll-on acceleration. Genesis quotes 6.8 seconds for the dash from 0 to 100km/h, with an overtakingfriendly 80-120km/h taking 5.3 seconds. Widely spaced wheels and big meaty tyres, reduce body roll and provide plenty of grip in corners. While it’s perhaps not quite as sharp or agile as a BMW X5 or Audi Q7 when driven enthusiastically, it’s in no way disappointing. While the interior lacks the
ambience of a Lexus, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Rated at 8.8 litres per 100km, we were getting 9.1L with a long-term average of 9.8L/100km. Instead of a spare tyre of any description, a tyre repair kit is supplied with a pressurised cylinder of goo to get you going again. The diesel is rated to tow a 2722kg brake load, with a maximum towball weight of 182kg. SUMMING UP You could pay more for a Benz, BMW or Audi, but seriously - why bother?
